Monkey Wrecks the Manfruit Tree and Angers the Immortal Zhenyuan
第025回Chapter 25
Now it is told that the three brother-disciples came up to the hall and said to their master, "The rice is nearly done — why did you call us?" Sanzang said, "Disciples, it's not about the rice. This temple has some kind of ginseng fruit, a thing shaped like a child — which of you stole and ate it?" Bajie said, "I'm honest, I don't know, I never saw it." Qingfeng said, "The one who's laughing is the one who did it, the one who's laughing is the one who did it." Xingzhe shouted, "Old Sun was born with this laughing face — just because you've lost some fruit, does that mean I'm not allowed to laugh?" Sanzang said, "Disciple, calm your anger. We are men who have left the household life; we must not tell lies, nor eat food against our conscience. If you really did eat his fruit, apologize to him — why go to such lengths to deny it?" Xingzhe, seeing that his master's words made sense, told the truth: "Master, it's not my doing. It was Bajie, who overheard next door that the two Daoist boys were eating some kind of ginseng fruit; he wanted to try one for the novelty, so he had old Sun go knock down three of them, and each of us brothers ate one. Now that they're eaten, what more do you want?" Mingyue said, "You stole four of mine, and this monk still says he isn't a thief!" Bajie said, "Amitabha! If four were stolen, how is it only three were brought out to share — did someone help himself to an extra one on the sly first?" The idiot instead turned around and made a fuss about it.
The two immortal boys, seeing that they had gotten at the truth, cursed and reviled them all the more. This made the Great Sage so angry that his steel teeth clenched and clicked, his fiery eyes opened wide round, and he gripped and re-gripped his gold-banded staff, restraining himself again and again, thinking: "If these boys were only cursing me to my face, that would be one thing — I could bear a bit of their anger. I'll give them a scheme to end their line, so that no one at all can eat those fruits again." Splendid Xingzhe — he plucked a hair from the back of his head, blew a breath of magic upon it, and cried, "Change!" It changed into a fake Xingzhe, who stayed close by Tang Seng, accompanying Wuneng and Wujing, and bore the boys' cursing and scolding. His true self sent forth a spirit, mounted the clouds, and leapt up, going straight to the ginseng-fruit garden. He drew out his gold-banded staff and struck the tree with a resounding blow, then, calling upon the divine strength that could push over mountains and shift ridges, gave the tree a shove and toppled it. Alas — the leaves fell, the branches split, the roots were torn from the earth; the Daoists' herb of return-to-life was cut off forever. The Great Sage, having toppled the tree, searched among the branches for fruit, but there was not even half of one to be found. It turned out that this treasure fell only when it met with gold, and since both ends of his staff were wrapped in gold — and iron besides belongs to the class of the Five Metals — a single strike was enough to shake them down;既下來,又遇土而入。and once they had fallen, they sank into the earth the moment they touched soil. That was why not a single fruit remained on the tree.他道:「好,好,好!He said, "Good, good, good! Now everyone's out of luck together." He put away his iron staff, went straight back, gave the hair a shake, and drew it back into his body. Those mortal, fleshly-eyed people could not see clearly what had happened.
Now it is told that after the immortal boys had cursed for quite a long while, Qingfeng said, "Mingyue, these monks certainly can take an earful — we've been scolding them like scolding chickens for half this while, and not a single one has answered back. Perhaps they really didn't steal and eat any. What if the tree is tall and the leaves thick, and we simply miscounted — we mustn't scold them wrongly. Let's you and I go check again." Mingyue said, "That's reasonable too." The two of them did indeed go back to the garden, and there they saw the tree lying toppled, its branches split apart, its fruit gone and its leaves fallen. This so terrified Qingfeng that his legs went weak and he stumbled to the ground, and it so unnerved Mingyue that his back went limp and he collapsed in a heap; the two of them were scared out of their wits. There is a poem to prove it. The poem says:
The two of them lay collapsed in the dust, their words all in confusion, crying out only, "What shall we do? What shall we do? They've destroyed the elixir-root of our Wuzhuang Guan, cut off the seedlings of our immortal line — when Master comes home, how are the two of us to answer him?" Mingyue said, "Elder brother, don't cry out so — let's first straighten our robes and caps, and not alarm these monks. This can be no one else's doing — it must certainly be that fellow with the hairy face and thunder-god beak; he must have sent out his spirit and worked some trick to ruin our treasure. If we try to reason it out with him, that fellow will surely deny it in the end, and we'll be bound to quarrel with him;爭起來,就要交手相打,你想我們兩個怎麼敵得過他四個?and once we quarrel, it will come to blows — just think, how could the two of us match their four? Better instead to go and trick them a little — just tell them the fruit isn't missing at all, that we miscounted, and even apologize to them for our mistake. Their rice is already cooked; when it's time for them to eat, we'll add a bit of side dishes for them besides. Once each of them has a bowl in hand, you stand to the left of the door and I'll stand to the right, and with a bang we'll shut the door and lock it fast — lock every one of these gates — and not let them out, and wait until Master comes home to deal with them however he sees fit. Besides, he is an old acquaintance of Master's — if Master forgives him, that will be Master's own kindness to show;不饒他,我們也拿住個賊在,庶幾可以免我等之罪。」 and if Master doesn't forgive him, at least we will have caught the thief ourselves, and that may spare us our share of the blame." When Qingfeng heard this he said, "That's reasonable, that's reasonable."
The two of them forced up their spirits and put on a show of good cheer, and went straight from the back garden to the hall, and bowing low before Tang Seng with bent backs, said, "Master, our words just now were coarse and we gave much offense — please don't hold it against us, please don't." Sanzang asked, "What do you mean?" Qingfeng said, "The fruit isn't missing at all — it's only that the tree is tall and the leaves thick, so we couldn't see clearly before. We just went to check again, and it's still the original number." Bajie, seizing the opportunity, said, "You young boy, too young to understand things, coming here to curse us wildly, mouthing empty curses and falsely accusing us — that's not decent behavior!" Xingzhe understood in his heart, though he said nothing aloud, thinking to himself: "A lie, a lie. The fruit is already a settled matter — why would he say such a thing? There must be some way of bringing the dead back to life." Sanzang said, "Since that's so, bring the rice — let's eat and be on our way."
Bajie then went to serve the rice, while Sha Seng set out the table and chairs. The two boys hurried to fetch side dishes — pickled melon, pickled eggplant, wine-lees turnip, vinegared string beans, salted lotus root, and blanched mustard greens — laying out seven or eight small plates in all for the master and disciples to eat with their rice;又提一壺好茶,兩個茶鍾,伺候左右。and they also brought a pot of good tea and two teacups, standing ready to attend on either side. Just as the four masters and disciples had picked up their bowls, the two boys, one on each side, gave the door a bang shut and bolted it with a two-tongued copper lock. Bajie laughed and said, "You boys are mistaken — what a poor custom you have here, shutting the door to eat!" Mingyue said, "Just so, just so — we'll open it once you've finished your meal, one way or another." Qingfeng cursed, "You gluttonous, sneak-eating bald thief, you! You stole and ate our immortal fruit — that alone is already the crime of helping yourself without leave to the melons and fruit of another's garden;卻又把我的仙樹推倒,壞了我五莊觀裡仙根,你還要說嘴哩。and then on top of that you toppled our immortal tree, destroying the immortal root of our Wuzhuang Guan, and still you dare to talk back. If you manage to reach the West and pay homage to the Buddha's face, it will only be after you've turned your back on this life, rocked in the cradle again, and been reborn." When Sanzang heard this, he set down his rice bowl, and a stone seemed to settle upon his heart. The boys then locked the front mountain gate and the second mountain gate as well, every one of them. Then they came back to the front of the main hall and, with vile words, calling them thieves this way and that, cursed on until the sky was nearly dark before at last going off to eat. After their meal, they returned to their room.
Tang Seng reproached Xingzhe, saying, "You monkey-head, time and again you bring disaster upon us. You stole and ate his fruit — bearing a bit of his anger and letting him scold you a few times would have been enough — why did you have to go and topple his tree as well? Judging by such circumstances, if this were brought to court, even if your own father were the presiding official, there'd be no talking your way out of it." Xingzhe said, "Master, don't fuss — those boys have both gone to sleep; just wait till they're fast asleep and we'll set off this very night." Sha Seng said, "Brother, every one of the gates has been locked, shut tight — how are we to get away?" Xingzhe laughed and said, "Never mind, never mind, old Sun has a way." Bajie said, "I'm not worried you'll lack a way — you'll just turn yourself into some kind of little bug and slip out through the lattice window and fly off. It's only we who can't transform who'll suffer here, left to take the blame in your place." Tang Seng said, "If he tries a trick like that, running off without taking you and me along, I'll recite the old-words sutra, and let's see how he can stand that." When Bajie heard this, half worried and half laughing, he said, "Master, what are you talking about? I've only ever heard that in Buddhism there are scrolls like the Śūraṅgama Sutra, the Lotus Sutra, the Peacock Sutra, the Guanyin Sutra, and the Diamond Sutra — I've never heard of any 'old-words sutra'!" Xingzhe said, "Brother, you don't know about it. This band I wear on my head was given by the Bodhisattva Guanyin to my master; my master tricked me into putting it on, and now it's as if it had taken root — there's no hope of ever getting it off. It's called the Tight-Fillet Spell, and also called the Tight-Fillet Sutra. His 'old-words sutra' is precisely this. Whenever he recites it, my head aches terribly — that's the trick he has to torment me with. Master, don't recite it — I will certainly not fail you; rest assured, we'll all get out together."
By the time they had finished talking, the sky had already grown dark, and before they knew it the moon had risen in the east. Xingzhe said, "Now that all sound has died away and the icy wheel of the moon shines bright, this is just the time to make our escape." Bajie said, "Brother, don't play tricks — every door is locked shut, how are we to get out?" Xingzhe said, "Watch my skill." He took his gold-banded staff in hand, worked a "lock-releasing spell," and pointed it at the door; there came a sudden clanging sound, and at every gate the double bolts dropped away, and with a rattling crash the door panels swung open. Bajie laughed and said, "What skill! Even if you called in a little locksmith with his picks, he couldn't do it half so neatly." Xingzhe said, "What's so rare about a door like this — even Nantian Men would open at a single point of my finger." Then he invited his master out through the gate and onto his horse; Bajie shouldered the carrying-pole, Sha Seng led the horse by its rein, and they set off straight down the western road. Xingzhe said, "You all go on slowly — let old Sun go take care that those two boys sleep for a whole month." Sanzang said, "Disciple, you must not harm their lives;不然,又一個得財傷人的罪了。」 otherwise it would be one more crime of gaining advantage by hurting others." Xingzhe said, "I understand." He went back in again and came to the door of the room where the boys were sleeping. At his waist he carried some sleep-inducing bugs, which he had originally won at a guessing-game with Zengzhang Tianwang at Dongtian Men. He fished out two of them, flicked them in past the lattice of the window, and they went straight for the boys' faces, so that they fell into a deep, snoring sleep, with no hope at all of waking. Only then did he stride out on the clouds, catch up with Tang Seng, and hurry straight west along the highway.
That night the horse never once paused its hooves, and they traveled until daybreak. Sanzang said, "This monkey-head is the death of me — because of your appetite you've robbed me of a whole night's sleep." Xingzhe said, "Don't keep on complaining. Now that it's light, why don't you rest a while in this grove by the roadside, to restore your strength before going on." The elder had no choice but to dismount, and leaning against a pine root to serve as a meditation seat, he sat himself down;沙僧歇了擔子打盹;Sha Seng set down the load and dozed off;八戒枕著石睡覺。Bajie pillowed his head on a stone and fell asleep. Only the Great Sage Sun had a mind for other things — see how he leapt among the trees and swung from branch to branch, amusing himself. Of the four resting there, we will speak no further for now.
Now it is told that the Great Immortal, once the gathering at Yuanshi Gong had broken up, led his band of lesser immortals out from Doushuai, went straight down from Yaotian, descended on auspicious clouds, and soon arrived at the gate of Wuzhuang Guan on Wanshou Shan. Looking about, he saw that the temple gate stood wide open and the ground was swept clean. The Great Immortal said, "Qingfeng and Mingyue really have turned out useful after all. Ordinarily, even when the sun is three fathoms high, they won't so much as straighten their backs;今日我們不在,他倒肯起早,開門掃地。」 yet today, with us away, they've actually been willing to rise early, open the gate, and sweep the ground." All the lesser immortals were pleased. When they came up to the hall, there was no incense burning at all, and not a sign of anyone about — where were Mingyue and Qingfeng? The assembled immortals said, "Those two must have taken advantage of our absence to make off with something and run away." The Great Immortal said, "How could that be! Would people who cultivate immortality dare to do such a wicked thing? More likely they simply forgot to shut the gate last night and went off to sleep, and this morning they still haven't woken." When the assembled immortals went to look at the door of their room, sure enough it was shut, and inside the two lay deep in snoring sleep;任外邊打門亂叫,那裡叫得醒來。no matter how they pounded on the door and shouted from outside, there was no waking them at all. The assembled immortals pried the door boards open and, laying hands on them, hauled them down off the bed, but still they would not wake. The Great Immortal laughed and said, "Fine immortal boys these are! People who have achieved immortality, with their spirit fully complete, no longer feel the need for sleep — how then can they be so drowsy? Could it be that someone has played a trick on them? Quickly, fetch some water." One of the boys hastily fetched half a cup of water and handed it to the Great Immortal. The Great Immortal recited a spell, took a mouthful of the water, and sprayed it onto their faces, and at once the demon of sleep was dispelled.
Only then did the two of them wake; suddenly opening their eyes, they wiped their faces, raised their heads to look, and recognized their immortal Master along with Shitong Jun and their fellow immortal elders. In their alarm, Qingfeng bowed his head to the ground and Mingyue kowtowed, saying, "Master! That old acquaintance of yours turned out to be a band of monks from the East — a gang of bandits, utterly vicious and fierce." The Great Immortal laughed and said, "Don't be frightened — tell it slowly." Qingfeng said, "Master, not long after you left that day, sure enough a certain Tang Seng from the Land of the East arrived, a party of four monks, five counting the horse. Your disciples dared not disobey your instructions, and having asked after the reasons for his coming, took two ginseng fruits and offered them up to him. That elder, with his worldly eyes and foolish heart, did not recognize the treasure of us immortals. He said it was an unborn infant not yet three days old, and again and again refused to eat it. So your disciples ate one each ourselves. Unexpectedly, among his three disciples there was one surnamed Sun, called Wukong Xingzhe, who stole and ate four of the fruits first. Your disciples went and reasoned with him about it, speaking a few honest words. But he would not tolerate it, and secretly worked some trick of sending forth his spirit. Oh, the suffering!..." When the two boys had spoken this far, they could not hold back the tears streaming down their cheeks. The assembled immortals said, "Did that monk strike you?" Mingyue said, "He didn't strike us — he only knocked down our ginseng-fruit tree." When the Great Immortal heard this, he showed no anger at all, and said, "Don't cry, don't cry. You don't know it, but that fellow surnamed Sun is himself a Grand Monad Wandering Immortal, who once wrought great havoc in Heaven — his magic powers are vast indeed. Since he has toppled our treasured tree, can you at least recognize those monks?" Qingfeng said, "We know all of them." The Great Immortal said, "Since you know them, come with me, all of you. — The rest of you disciples, get the instruments of punishment ready, and wait for me to come back and deal with him." The assembled immortals received his order.
The Great Immortal, together with Mingyue and Qingfeng, rose up on auspicious light and set off after Sanzang, and in an instant had covered a thousand li. The Great Immortal looked west from among the clouds but saw no sign of Tang Seng. When he turned his head to look east instead, he found he had overshot by more than nine hundred li. It turned out that the elder, though the horse had not paused its hooves all night, had only traveled a hundred and twenty li;大仙的雲頭,一縱趕過了九百餘里。while the Great Immortal's cloud, in a single leap, had overshot by more than nine hundred li. The immortal boys said, "Master, the one sitting under the tree by the road there is Tang Seng." The Great Immortal said, "I have already seen him. You two go back and prepare ropes; let me capture him myself." Qingfeng and Mingyue went back ahead, and of that we will say no more.
The Great Immortal brought his cloud down, gave himself a shake, and transformed into a wandering Daoist priest. Do you ask how he was dressed?
He went straight up to the tree and called out loudly to Tang Seng, "Elder, this poor priest greets you." The elder hastily returned the greeting, saying, "Forgive me for not noticing you, forgive me." The Great Immortal asked, "Elder, from what region do you come? And why are you sitting in meditation here on the road?" Sanzang said, "This poor monk has been sent by the Great Tang of the Land of the East to fetch scriptures from the Western Heaven; passing through this place, I am resting here a while." The Great Immortal feigned surprise and said, "Elder, coming from the east as you did, did you happen to pass by my humble mountain?" The elder said, "I do not know, immortal officer, which precious mountain is yours?" The Great Immortal said, "Wuzhuang Guan on Wanshou Shan — that is this poor priest's dwelling place."
When Xingzhe heard this — being a man with something on his conscience — he hastily answered, "No, no, we came by the main road." The Great Immortal pointed straight at him and laughed, saying, "You wretched ape! Who do you think you're fooling? You went right into my temple and knocked down my ginseng-fruit tree, and traveled all night to get this far, and still you won't confess — what are you trying to cover up? Don't try to run — hurry up and give me back my tree." When Xingzhe heard this, he grew furious at heart, drew out his iron staff, and without waiting for further words, struck straight at the Great Immortal's head. The Great Immortal turned aside and dodged the blow, then stepped onto auspicious light and rose straight into the air. Xingzhe likewise mounted the clouds and hurried after him in pursuit. The Great Immortal revealed his true form in midair — see how he was arrayed:
That Xingzhe, with no regard for high or low, laid about wildly with his cudgel. The Great Immortal warded it off left and right with his jade whisk, holding him off for two or three bouts. Then he used the technique of "the universe in one's sleeve": up in the clouds he gave his robe sleeve a light shake against the wind, and with a swish it swept forward, gathering all four monks and the horse together inside one sleeve. Bajie said, "This is bad, we're all packed into a net!" Xingzhe said, "Fool, it's not a net, we've been gathered into his sleeve." Bajie said, "That's nothing to worry about — let me give it one whack with my rake, punch a hole through it, and slip out, and just say he wasn't careful and didn't hold us tight, and let it go at that." The idiot swung his rake wildly, but there was no way to break through it: though it felt soft to the touch, once struck it was harder than iron.
The Great Immortal turned his auspicious cloud and descended straight to Five Villages Abbey, taking his seat and calling for his disciples to bring rope. The lesser immortals attended one by one. Watch as, just like plucking out puppets, he drew Tang Seng out from his sleeve and bound him to a pillar under the eaves of the main hall. Then he took out the other three, and bound one to each pillar. He also took out the horse and tethered it in the courtyard, giving it some fodder. The luggage was tossed down under the corridor. He also said, "Disciples, this monk is a man who has left the household — we must not use knife or spear on him, nor apply the axe or halberd. Just fetch the leather whip for me, and give him a beating, to vent my anger over the ginseng fruit." The immortals at once fetched a whip — not made of ox hide, sheep hide, deer hide, or calf hide, but rather a seven-star whip made of dragon hide, which had been soaking in water there. He ordered a sturdy young immortal to take hold of the whip, saying, "Master, whom shall I strike first?" The Great Immortal said, "Tang Sanzang set himself up as the leader without proper respect — strike him first."
Hearing this, Xingzhe thought secretly to himself, "That old monk of mine can't withstand a beating; if a whipping should injure him, wouldn't that be a sin of my own making?" He could not bear it, and spoke up: "Sir, you are mistaken. It was I who stole the fruit, I who ate the fruit, and I who knocked down the tree — why not beat me first? What's the use of beating him?" The Great Immortal laughed, "This wretched monkey speaks with quite some spirit and force. In that case, beat him first." The young immortal asked, "How many strokes?" The Great Immortal said, "In accordance with the number of fruits, give him thirty strokes." The young immortal swung the whip and began. Fearing the power of the immortals' magic, Xingzhe opened his eyes wide and fixed his gaze, watching where the blows would land. It turned out they struck at the legs. Xingzhe gave his waist a twist and cried, "Change!" — turning his legs into two legs of wrought iron, and watched to see how they would strike now. The young immortal struck thirty blows one after another, and by then the sun had nearly reached noon. The Great Immortal further instructed, "He should also be beaten for having failed to instruct Sanzang strictly, and for indulging his unruly disciples in running wild." So the immortal swung the whip to strike again. Xingzhe said, "Sir, you are mistaken again. When the fruit was stolen, my master knew nothing of it — he was in the hall talking with your two boy attendants. It was a deed done by us brothers. Even if there is some blame for lax instruction, it is I, his disciple, who ought to take the beating in his place — beat me again instead." The Great Immortal said, "This wretched monkey, sly and cunning though he is, does show something of filial devotion after all. Since that's so, beat him instead." The young immortal gave him another thirty strokes. Xingzhe lowered his head and looked at his two legs — they had been struck bright and shiny as mirrors, and he felt not the slightest pain or itch. By this time the sky was growing dark, and the Great Immortal said, "For now soak the whip in water, and tomorrow morning we shall flog him again." The young immortal put the whip away to soak, and everyone retired to their rooms. Evening vegetarian fare having been finished, all settled down to sleep for the night — no more of that for now.
The elderly monk, tears streaming from both eyes, reproached his three disciples: "You brought this disaster upon us, and now you've implicated me in suffering here — how did this ever come about?" Xingzhe said, "Don't complain for now — if there's beating to be done, it's I who am beaten first; you haven't been beaten at all, so why are you sighing and moaning like this?" Tang Seng said, "Though I haven't been beaten, being bound like this still hurts." Sha Seng said, "Master, there's someone else here bound alongside you too." Xingzhe said, "None of you make a fuss — in a little while we'll be on our way." Bajie said, "Brother, you're putting on airs again. These hempen ropes here have been soaked in water and bound tight — it's quite different from being locked in the hall, where you used your lock-releasing trick to force the door and walk out." Xingzhe said, "I'm not boasting, but even if this three-strand hemp rope were soaked in water, or even a mooring cable as thick as a bowl, it would still be no more to me than an autumn breeze."
Just as they were talking, all sounds had already fallen silent, for it was truly the hour when the heavenly streets grow still and people are at rest. Fine Xingzhe — he shrank his body a little and slipped free of the ropes, saying, "Master, quiet now." Sha Seng panicked and said, "Brother, save us too." Xingzhe said, "Quiet, quiet." He then untied Sanzang, freed Bajie and Sha Seng, straightened his robe, saddled and loaded the horse, fetched the luggage from under the corridor, and together they went out through the abbey gate. He also told Bajie, "Go and cut down four willow trees from the cliffside." Bajie said, "What do you want them for?" Xingzhe said, "There's a use for them — go fetch them quickly." The idiot, being rather strong, went off, and butting each one with his snout, uprooted all four and came back carrying them in his arms. Xingzhe broke off the branches and twigs, then had the two brothers go back inside and tie the trees with the original ropes to the pillars just as before. The Great Sage recited a spell, bit the tip of his tongue, and sprayed blood onto the trees, crying, "Change!" — one turned into the elderly monk, one turned into himself, and the other two turned into Sha Seng and Bajie;都變得容貌一般,相貌皆同,問他也就說話,叫名也就答應。all transformed with identical faces and appearances, and when spoken to they would answer, and when called by name they would respond. The two of them then quickened their pace and caught up with their master. That night they rode on without stopping the horse's hooves, putting distance between themselves and Five Villages Abbey.
Only, by dawn, the elderly monk was nodding and dozing atop the horse, swaying like a stake in the wind. Seeing this, Xingzhe called out, "Master, you're not holding up well — how can one who has left the household be so worn out by hardship? Old Sun here could go a thousand nights without sleep and never feel the least bit weary. Come, get down from the horse for now — don't let travelers passing by see you and laugh. Let's rest a while at some spot on the hillside where the wind and air gather, and then go on."
Let us leave master and disciples resting on the road for the moment. Instead let us tell how the Great Immortal rose at dawn, ate his morning vegetarian meal, came out to the hall, and ordered, "Bring the whip — today it's Tang Sanzang's turn to be beaten." The young immortal swung the whip and, facing Tang Seng, said, "Now you get it." The willow tree answered back, "Beat away." With a crack, thirty strokes were given. Swinging the whip over, he said to Bajie, "Now you get it." The willow tree likewise answered, "Beat away." And when it came to beating Sha Seng, it likewise answered, telling him to beat on. And when it came to beating Xingzhe, that Xingzhe, out on the road, happened to give a sudden shiver and said, "This is bad!" Sanzang asked, "What do you mean?" Xingzhe said, "I turned four willow trees into the likenesses of the four of us, master and disciples. I thought that since they beat me twice yesterday, they surely wouldn't beat me again today, but they're beating my transformed body after all, and that's why my true body just shivered. Let me undo the spell." Xingzhe hastily recited the spell to dispel the transformation.
Just watch — the young Daoist boys took fright, threw down the whip, and reported, "Master, the one we beat first was the Tang monk himself, but this last while we've been beating nothing but willow-tree roots." Hearing this, the Great Immortal gave a cold laugh, praising him without end: "Sun Xingzhe truly is a fine Monkey King. ──你走了便也罷,卻怎麼綁些柳樹在此冒名頂替?I have heard that he once wrought great havoc in Heaven, and that nets and snares spread over the earth and sky could not catch him — it seems that's really so. If you had simply run off, that would have been that — but why leave willow trees bound here in your place, impersonating you under a false name? By no means shall he be forgiven — go after them."
So the Great Immortal, giving the order to pursue, rose up on his cloud, and gazing westward, saw the monks, carrying their pack and driving the horse, still making their way along the road. The Great Immortal brought his cloud down low and called out, "Sun Xingzhe, where do you think you're going? Give me back my ginseng tree." Hearing this, Bajie said, "That's it, our nemesis has come again." Xingzhe said, "Master, for now set aside the word 'kindness,' and let us show a bit of fierceness, finish him off outright, and free ourselves once and for all." Hearing this, Tang Seng trembled with fear and did not answer. Sha Seng drew his treasure staff, Bajie raised his rake, and the Great Sage wielded his iron cudgel; together they rushed forward, surrounded the Great Immortal in midair, and struck and jabbed at him wildly. Of this fierce battle there is a poem as proof. The poem reads:
The three brother-disciples each wielded their divine weapons, attacking together as one;那大仙只把蠅帚兒演架。but the Great Immortal merely parried with his fly whisk. Before even half an hour had passed, he spread his robe sleeve wide and, just as before, swept all four monks, the horse, and the luggage into his sleeve. He turned his cloud back and returned once more to the abbey, where the assembled immortals received him. The immortal master took his seat in the hall, and once again drew them out one by one from his sleeve: he bound Tang Seng to a low scholar-tree at the foot of the steps;八戒、沙僧各綁在兩邊樹上;Bajie and Sha Seng were each bound to trees on either side;將行者捆倒。and Xingzhe he had trussed up and thrown down. Xingzhe said, "I suppose this means an interrogation." In no time they were bound fast, and he ordered ten bolts of long cloth to be brought. Xingzhe said with a laugh, "Bajie, how thoughtful of this gentleman, bringing out cloth to make us inner robes. Or better yet, save some material and just make us each a single shroud." The young immortals then brought out homespun cloth. The Great Immortal said, "Wrap Tang Sanzang, Zhu Bajie, and Sha Heshang all up in cloth." The immortals all stepped forward together and wrapped them. Xingzhe said with a laugh, "Good, good, good — encoffining us alive, are we!" In a moment the wrapping was finished. Then he ordered lacquer to be brought out as well. The immortals at once fetched some raw and refined lacquer they had gathered and sun-dried themselves, and lacquered the three of them all over where the cloth wrapped their bodies, coating them entirely, leaving only their heads and faces exposed. Bajie said, "Sir, the top part doesn't matter much, but do leave an opening down below, so we can relieve ourselves." The Great Immortal then had a great cauldron brought out. Xingzhe said with a laugh, "Bajie, what luck — they're bringing out a cauldron, I suppose to cook us some rice to eat." Bajie said, "Well, that's fine too — let us eat a good meal, so we can at least look like well-fed ghosts when we die." The immortals duly carried out a great cauldron and set it up beneath the steps. The Great Immortal had dry firewood stacked up and a fierce fire lit, and ordered, "Pour a cauldron full of clear oil, and once it's boiling, plunge Sun Xingzhe into the oil cauldron and fry him thoroughly, to avenge my ginseng tree."
Hearing this, Xingzhe thought gleefully to himself, "This suits old Sun's own wishes exactly — I haven't had a bath in quite a while and my skin's been rather dry and itchy; a good scalding, one way or another, would be much appreciated." In no time, the oil in the cauldron was nearly boiling. Yet the Great Sage remained wary, fearing the immortal's magic might be hard to fathom and that it would be difficult to work any trick once in the oil cauldron. He quickly turned and looked all around, and saw that below the platform, to the east, stood a sundial pedestal, and to the west, a stone lion. Xingzhe gave a leap of his body, rolled over to the west, bit the tip of his tongue, sprayed a mouthful of blood onto the stone lion, and cried, "Change!" — it turned into his own likeness, trussed up in a bundle just the same. He then let his true spirit slip out, rose up into the clouds, and looked down, watching the Daoists.
Just then the young immortal reported, "Master, the oil in the cauldron is at a full boil." The Great Immortal ordered, "Carry Sun Xingzhe over." Four immortal boys could not lift him; eight more came and still could not lift him; another four were added and still they could not lift him. The immortals said, "This monkey clings to the earth and is hard to move — small as he is, he's certainly solid." So they had twenty young immortals hoist him up together and hurl him straight into the cauldron. There came a sizzling crack, and splattering droplets of boiling oil shot up, scalding several of the young Daoists' faces into great blistering welts. Just then the boy tending the fire was heard shouting, "The cauldron's leaking, the cauldron's leaking!" Before he had even finished speaking, the oil had drained completely away and the bottom of the cauldron lay broken — and there inside was nothing but a stone lion.
The Great Immortal, enraged, said, "This wretched monkey is truly insolent, to work his trickery right under our noses. If you had simply run off, that would have been that — but why must you also wreck my stove? This wretched monkey — it's useless trying to catch him;就拿住他,也似摶砂弄汞,捉影捕風。even if he were caught, it would be like kneading sand or handling mercury, like grasping at shadows or catching the wind. Enough, enough, enough — let him go. Just untie Tang Sanzang instead, set up a new cauldron, and give him a good scalding, to avenge the ginseng tree." The young immortals set right to work, stripping off the cloth and lacquer.
Xingzhe, listening clearly from midair, thought to himself, "My master can't endure this — if he goes into the oil cauldron, one boil will kill him, a second will scorch him, and by the third or fourth boil he'll be reduced to a mess of mush. 那大仙驚罵道:「我把你這猢猴!I had better go rescue him after all." Fine Great Sage — he brought his cloud down, stepped forward, clasped his hands, and said, "Don't tear off the cloth and lacquer to scald my master — wait, let me go into the oil cauldron instead." The Great Immortal, startled, cursed him: "You wretched macaque! How dare you work your tricks and wreck my stove?" Xingzhe said with a laugh, "If your stove got wrecked just from meeting me, what's that got to do with me? I was fully willing to enjoy a bit of that oily broth and oily water just now, but the trouble is my bowels were pressing urgently, and if I'd let wind loose in the cauldron, I feared it might foul your fine cooked oil and spoil it for seasoning your dishes. Now that I've thoroughly relieved myself, I'm quite fit to go into the pot. Don't scald my master — come scald me instead." Hearing this, the Great Immortal gave a cold laugh, walked out of the hall, and seized hold of him with one hand.
What was said after this, and just how he managed to free himself in the end, is not yet known — listen to the next chapter for the explanation.

What it’s about
Stung by the boys' scolding, Wukong loses his temper and uses his cudgel to uproot the ginseng tree entirely, spilling its fruit and killing it. When Zhenyuan returns to find his treasure destroyed, he pursues the fleeing pilgrims on the wind and scoops all four of them up in his wide sleeve as easily as netting fish from a stream.
Back at the temple the immortal has them bound and whipped, and Wukong takes the beating in the others' place by conjuring iron doubles of his own skin. He tries to break out by night, but Zhenyuan simply nets them a second time and threatens to fry them in oil. Wukong bargains for time, promising to travel the seas and find a way to bring the dead tree back to life.
When it was written 背景
This 回 turns the ginseng theft into a genuine crisis and gives the novel a rare antagonist who is not a demon but a peer immortal older than Wukong himself, one the Monkey King simply cannot beat. The sleeve-capture and the substitute-skin trick are memorable stage effects worth pausing over. Learners should read this as the middle of a three-chapter unit: the wrong is done, the punishment lands, and the search for a remedy is what carries the story into the next 回.
