At Wuzhuang Temple the Pilgrims Steal the Manfruit

024Chapter 24

穿The story goes that the three of them pushed through the woods and in they went, and there was the idiot, trussed up on a tree, crying out again and again, unable to bear the pain.:「婿Pilgrim stepped up and said with a laugh, "Fine son-in-law you are — at this hour still not up to thank your in-laws, nor gone to report the happy news to Master, but still here putting on a show for our amusement.Bah!Where's your mother-in-law?Where's your wife? What a fine trussed-up-and-strung-up son-in-law you make." The idiot, seeing him come to mock him so, was ashamed, gritted his teeth, bore the pain, and dared not cry out. When Sha Monk saw this he could not bear it any longer, set down the luggage, stepped forward, undid the ropes, and got him down. The idiot did nothing but kowtow and bow to them, in truth so mortified he could not endure it.西There is a poem to the tune of Xijiang Yue as proof:

That Bajie scooped up a pinch of earth to burn as incense, and bowed in worship toward the sky.:「?」:「?」Pilgrim said, "Do you even recognize which Bodhisattvas those were?" Bajie said, "I had already fainted dead away, my eyes swimming and dazzled — how could I tell who was who?" Pilgrim handed the note over to Bajie. When Bajie saw it was a verse of praise, he grew all the more ashamed.:「。」:「Sha Monk laughed and said, "So Second Brother has such fine qualities that he moved four Bodhisattvas to come and arrange a marriage for you." Bajie said, "Brother, don't ever bring this up again, it's beneath a decent person. From now on I shall never again act rashly.西。」:「。」Even if it breaks my bones, I will only bear the pole on my shoulder and follow Master to the Western Regions." Tripitaka said, "Only if you speak thus is it right."

Pilgrim then led his master onto the main road.:「。」:「?」After traveling a good while, suddenly a high mountain appeared blocking the way. Tripitaka reined in his horse and stayed his whip, saying, "Disciple, there is a mountain ahead — we must be careful, I fear there may be demons and monsters at work there, to do harm to our company." Pilgrim said, "So long as the three of us are before your horse, what monster is there to fear?" And so the elder set his mind at ease and pressed onward.Behold that mountain — truly a fine mountain:

Tripitaka, on his horse, said joyfully, "Disciple, ever since I set out westward I have passed through many mountains and rivers, and all were places of jagged, perilous heights — none were as fine a scene as this mountain. Truly its secluded charm is quite extraordinary.。」:「。」:「?」:「。」 If we were drawing near to the Thunderclap Sound and the road were not far, we ought to compose ourselves in solemn dignity to meet the World-Honored One." Pilgrim laughed and said, "Too soon, too soon — we're nowhere near arriving yet." Sha Monk said, "Elder Brother, how much further is it to Thunderclap?" Pilgrim said, "A hundred and eight thousand li, and of ten parts of the journey we have not yet traveled even one part." Bajie said, "Brother, how many years must we walk before we get there?" Pilgrim said, "As for this road, speaking of you two worthy brothers, even ten-odd days would get you there;as for my own walking, in a single day I could easily make fifty round trips and still see daylight;。」:「?」:「but as for Master's walking, don't even think of it, don't even think of it." Tang Seng said, "Wukong, by your reckoning, when might we arrive?" Pilgrim said, "Though you walk from childhood to old age, and grow old and then become a child again, and do this a thousand times over, it would still be hard;。」:「。」:「only if you see your true nature with utter sincerity, and in every thought turn back to the source — that very place is Vulture Peak." Sha Monk said, "Elder Brother, though this place is not Thunderclap, looking at this scenery there must surely be some good person dwelling here." Pilgrim said, "Well said.。」There is certainly no evil influence here — this must be the dwelling of some sage monk or immortal folk. Let us stroll along at ease." No more of that for now.

Now to tell of this mountain — it was called Wanshou Shan, the Mountain of Ten Thousand Longevities. On the mountain there stood a Daoist temple, called Wuzhuang Guan, the Five Villages Temple. In the temple dwelt an immortal, whose Daoist title was Zhenyuanzi, nicknamed "Equal to the World."That temple produced a rare treasure unlike any other — a thing formed at the very moment chaos first divided, when the primal mists first parted and Heaven and Earth had not yet opened, this magic root had come into being.西Of all the four great continents under Heaven, only Wuzhuang Guan on Aparagodaniya, the Western Continent, produced this — called "grass that restores the elixir," also named the ginseng fruit. It blossoms once every three thousand years, sets fruit once every three thousand years, and takes another three thousand years to ripen — in all, very nearly ten thousand years must pass before it can be eaten.Even across ten thousand years, it bears only thirty fruits.滿In shape the fruit resembles a newborn child not yet three days old, complete with all four limbs and all five sense-organs.If a person has the good fortune merely to smell one of these fruits, he will live three hundred and sixty years;and if he eats one whole, he will live forty-seven thousand years.

」。That very day, the Great Immortal Zhenyuan had received a written invitation from the Primal Celestial Venerable, inviting him up to the Miluo Palace in the Upper Clear Heaven to hear a lecture on "the Fruits of the Way of Chaos-Unity."Among the Great Immortal's disciples who had gone on to become wandering immortals there was a number beyond counting; and at that time he still had forty-eight disciples remaining, all Complete Realization Daoists who had attained the Way.That day he took forty-six of them up to Heaven to hear the lecture, leaving behind two of the very youngest to mind the house: one called Qingfeng, Clear Breeze, and the other called Mingyue, Bright Moon.Qingfeng was but one thousand three hundred and twenty years old, and Mingyue had only just turned one thousand two hundred.:「Zhenyuanzi instructed the two lads, saying, "I dare not disobey the Great Celestial Venerable's written summons, and must go to the Miluo Palace to hear the lecture — you two mind the house carefully while I am gone.Within the next few days an old friend of mine will be passing through here — do not be remiss in receiving him.。」:「You may take two of my ginseng fruits and give them to him to eat, as a small token of our old friendship." The two lads said, "Master, who is this old friend of yours?。」 :「:『。』?」:「Please tell your disciples, so that we may receive him properly." The Great Immortal said, "He is a sage monk under the banner of the Great Tang of the Eastern Land, whose Daoist title is Sanzang — a monk now journeying to the Western Heaven to worship the Buddha and seek the scriptures." The two lads laughed and said, "Confucius said, 'Those whose ways differ cannot make plans together.' We belong to the Taiyi mystic gate of Daoism — how could we have any acquaintance with such a monk?" The Great Immortal said, "How would you two know of this?西That monk is none other than the reincarnation of Golden Cicada, the second disciple of the Western Sage Elder, the Tathagata Buddha.Five hundred years ago, I met him at the Ullambana Assembly.。」He once personally poured tea and offered it to me with his own hands — a disciple of the Buddha showing me such respect — and that is why he is an old friend of mine."

When the two immortal lads heard this, they respectfully obeyed their master's command.:「。」:「。」:「。」As the Great Immortal was about to leave, he once more admonished and instructed them, saying, "My fruits are limited in number — you are permitted to give him only two, and must not squander any more." Qingfeng said, "When the garden was last opened, all the assembled disciples together ate two of them, and there are still twenty-eight left on the tree — we dare not squander any more." The Great Immortal said, "Though Tang Sanzang is an old friend, you must guard against his followers making trouble — do not let them find out or be alarmed." The two lads received these instructions, and the Great Immortal, borne up by his assembled disciples, rose flying into the air and went straight to the Heavenly realm.

Now to tell of Tang Seng and his three followers, roaming about on the mountain — suddenly they raised their heads and saw a cluster of pines and bamboo, and several stories of pavilions and towers.:「?」:「Tang Seng said, "Wukong, look there — what sort of place is that?" Pilgrim looked and said, "That place, if it isn't a Daoist temple, must surely be a Buddhist monastery.。」Let us walk on a bit, and once we reach that place we shall know for certain." Before long, they arrived before the gate and looked, and saw:

」。Tripitaka got down from the saddle off his horse, and further noticed, to the left of the mountain gate, a stone tablet, on which were ten large characters: "Blessed Land of Wanshou Mountain; Grotto-Heaven of Wuzhuang Guan.":「。」:「The elder said, "Disciples, this truly is a Daoist temple." Sha Monk said, "Master, seeing how fine and bright this scenery is, there must surely be good people dwelling within this temple. :「。」:「Let us go in and have a look — if, on our return journey east after our mission is fulfilled, we recall it, this too will be one fine sight to remember." Pilgrim said, "Well spoken." So all together they went in, and further saw, on the inner gate, a pair of spring couplets: "An immortal's mansion of eternal youth never growing old;。」:「a Daoist household whose lifespan equals Heaven's." Pilgrim laughed and said, "This Daoist is talking big to frighten people.。」:「。」When old Monkey raised great havoc in Heaven five hundred years ago, even at the gate of Lord Lao Zi himself, I never saw such words spoken." Bajie said, "Never mind him for now — let's go in, let's go in. Perhaps this Daoist priest has some real virtue and accomplishment — who's to say?"

By the time they reached the second gate, they saw within it, in great haste, two young lads come hurrying out.See how they were dressed:

:「。」殿The lads bent their backs and bowed low, coming out to greet them, saying, "Reverend Master, forgive us for failing to welcome you sooner — please, be seated." The elder was delighted, and so went with the two lads up to view the main hall.殿It turned out to be a great hall of five bays facing south, all fitted with carved lattice windows, bright above and dark below.殿便The immortal lads pushed open the lattice doors and invited Tang Seng into the hall, where they saw, hung in the middle of the wall, the two great characters "Heaven and Earth" done up in five-colored decoration, and below them a vermilion-lacquered, carved incense table, on which stood a set of gold incense burner and vase, and beside the burner some ready-made prepared incense.

Tang Seng stepped forward, and with his left hand took a pinch of incense and set it in the burner, then bowed in worship three full circuits.:「西When the bowing was done, he turned his head and said, "Immortal lads, your Wuzhuang Guan is truly a realm of Western immortals.?」:「Why do you not enshrine and make offerings to the Three Pure Ones, the Four Emperors, and all the celestial lords of the Encompassing Heaven, but instead serve incense only to these two characters 'Heaven and Earth'?" The lad laughed and said, "I won't hide it from you, Reverend — of these two characters, the upper one, Heaven, it is indeed only proper that we do it reverence;。」:「?」:「but the lower one, Earth, does not deserve to receive our incense either — it was our master's own flattering contrivance." Tripitaka said, "What do you mean by 'flattering contrivance'?" The lad said, "The Three Pure Ones are our master's friends, the Four Emperors are our master's old acquaintances;。」the Nine Luminaries are our master's juniors, and the Star Lords of the Original Destiny are our master's lesser guests." When Pilgrim heard this, he burst out laughing so hard he nearly fell over.:「?」:「。」:「?」:「。」:「Bajie said, "Brother, what are you laughing at?" Pilgrim said, "I always said old Monkey was good at pulling tricks, but it turns out this Daoist lad is good at spinning empty air into rope!" Tripitaka said, "Where is your master now?" The lad said, "My master received a written summons from the Primal Celestial Venerable, inviting him to the Miluo Palace in the Upper Clear Heaven to hear a lecture on 'the Fruits of the Way of Chaos-Unity' — he is not at home." When Pilgrim heard this, he could not help but let out a shout, saying, "You stinking little Daoist brat, you don't even know who you're talking to, and yet you dare play your tricks in front of him, putting on such an empty show of pretension?Who at that Miluo Palace is even a Grand Monad Celestial Immortal??」What business would a wretched ox-hoof like you have going there to lecture on anything?"

便:「Seeing him grow angry, Tripitaka feared the lad might answer back and stir up trouble, so he said, "Wukong, don't quarrel with him — since we have already come in, if we simply left again, it would seem we lacked all courtesy.:『。』As the saying goes: 'An egret does not eat egret flesh.' Since his master is not at home, why stir up trouble with him for nothing?便You go tend the horse before the mountain gate, let Sha Monk watch over the luggage, and have Bajie untie the bundles and take out some rice, borrow their stove and pots, and cook us a meal — and when we are about to leave, we shall leave them a few coins for firewood, and that will settle it.。」Each of you attend to your own task, and let me rest here a while — once the meal is done, we shall be on our way." The three of them accordingly each went off to their own tasks.

Meanwhile Mingyue and Qingfeng could not stop praising him privately, saying, "What a fine monk — truly a Western sage come down among mortals, his true nature undimmed.Master ordered us to receive Tang Seng and give him the ginseng fruits to eat, to show our regard for our old friendship;and also told us to guard against his followers making trouble. And sure enough those three have fierce, unruly faces, and coarse, rough dispositions.調Fortunately we managed to send them off elsewhere;?」:「had they stayed right there beside him, would they not have seen the ginseng fruits too?" Qingfeng said, "Brother, we still do not know for certain whether this monk truly is Master's old friend.。」:「西?」:「Let's ask him and see, so that we make no mistake." The two lads again stepped forward and said, "May we ask, Reverend Master, are you Tang Sanzang of the Great Tang, journeying to the Western Heaven to fetch the scriptures?" The elder returned the greeting and said, "This poor monk is indeed he.?」:「How is it that you immortal lads know my humble name?" The lad said, "Before our master left, he instructed his disciples to go far to receive you.We did not expect your carriage to arrive so promptly, and so we failed to welcome you properly.。」:「。」Reverend, please be seated, while your disciple prepares tea to offer you." Tripitaka said, "I dare not trouble you." Mingyue hurried back to his own chamber, fetched a cup of fragrant tea, and presented it to the elder.:「。」When the tea was finished, Qingfeng said, "Brother, we must not disobey our master's command — let us go together and fetch the fruits."

The two lads took leave of Sanzang, went together to their chamber, one taking up a golden striking-rod, the other a cinnabar tray, further laying a green kerchief over the bottom of the tray, and went straight to the ginseng garden.使Qingfeng climbed up into the tree and used the golden striking-rod to knock down the fruit.Mingyue stood below the tree with the cinnabar tray to catch it. :「In a moment, he had knocked down two fruits, caught them in the tray, and went straight to the front hall to present them, saying, "Reverend Tang, our Wuzhuang Guan is a remote and rustic place in the mountain wilds, with nothing fit to offer you — here are two plain local fruits, a small token, to quench your thirst." When the elder saw them, he trembled with fright and drew back three feet, saying, "Merciful Buddha!Merciful Buddha! This year the harvest has been abundant and the times bountiful — how is it that in this temple things have come to such famine that people are eaten? :「。」:「This is a child not yet three days old — how could you offer it to me to quench my thirst?" Qingfeng said to himself privately, "This monk, having lived amid all that wrangling of tongues and that sea of right and wrong, has grown so worldly and mortal in his eyes that he does not recognize this rare treasure of our immortal家." Mingyue stepped forward and said, "Reverend, this thing is called the ginseng fruit — there is no harm in eating one." Tripitaka said, "Nonsense, nonsense. That child's parents, carrying it in the womb, suffered who knows how much hardship before it was ever born.?」:「。」:「It is not yet three days old — how could you bring it here to serve as a fruit?" Qingfeng said, "It truly grew on the tree." The elder said, "Absurd talk, absurd talk. Can a tree really bear a human being as its fruit?。」Take it away — this is not fit for decent people."

Seeing that he refused it no matter how they urged and pressed, the two lads had no choice but to take up the tray and return to their own chamber. Now that fruit was a strange thing indeed — it could not be kept for long;if left too long, it would stiffen and become unfit to eat.The two of them went to their chamber, and each took one, sitting on the edge of the bed, and simply set to eating it right there.

Ah!So it turned out there was such a matter as this.便That Daoist chamber shared a wall right next to the kitchen, and whatever was whispered quietly on one side could at once be heard on the other.Bajie was in the kitchen just then cooking the meal, and having earlier heard them speak of fetching the golden striking-rod and taking the cinnabar tray, he had already taken note of it in his heart;and now hearing them say that Tang Seng had failed to recognize the ginseng fruit, and so they had taken it into their room to eat it themselves,:「?」he could not help but let saliva run at the mouth, saying, "How might I get one to taste, just for the novelty?" But his own body being so clumsy and unwieldy, he could not manage to slip away, and so he waited only for Pilgrim to come, to discuss it with him. There before the stove mouth he had no heart left for tending the fire, and kept craning his neck and poking his head out now and then to look. Before long, he saw Pilgrim leading the horse over, tying it to a locust tree, and heading straight toward the back.:「。」:「The idiot waved his hand wildly, saying, "Over here, over here." Pilgrim turned and came to the kitchen doorway, saying, "Idiot, what are you hollering about?。」:「I suppose the rice isn't enough to eat — well, let the old monk eat his fill first, and further along we'll beg for food again at some great household." Bajie said, "Come in here, it's not that there's too little rice.?」:「?」:「There is a treasure in this temple — do you know of it?" Pilgrim said, "What treasure?" Bajie laughed and said, "If I tell you, you've never seen it;。」:「and if I showed it to you, you wouldn't even recognize it." Pilgrim said, "This idiot is making fun of old Monkey.?」:「?」:「Five hundred years ago, when old Monkey went about seeking the immortal Way, I roamed as far as the corners of the sea and the edges of the sky — what kind of thing have I never seen?" Bajie said, "Brother, have you ever seen a ginseng fruit?" Pilgrim said, startled, "That, truly, I have never seen. But I have often heard people say that the ginseng fruit is the grass that restores the elixir, and that a person who eats it can prolong his life to an extraordinary degree.?」:「Where might one be had now?" Bajie said, "They have some here.滿The lad brought two for Master to eat, but the old monk didn't recognize them, and said they were children not yet three days old, and dared not eat them.便That lad was thoroughly shameless — since Master wasn't going to eat them, they ought to have been given to us, but instead he hid it from us, and just now in the room next door, one apiece, they gobbled them down, slurping and smacking, and went back out. It's made me so anxious my mouth is fairly watering. How might I get one to taste, just for the novelty??」:「。」:「I think you're rather slippery and quick — go into their garden and steal a few to taste, what do you say?" Pilgrim said, "That's easy enough — old Monkey will go, and it'll be in hand the moment I reach for it." He quickly turned to leave, but Bajie grabbed hold of him, saying, "Brother, I heard him say in that room that they meant to take some sort of golden striking-rod to knock the fruit down.。」:「。」This must be done properly — we mustn't let word of it leak out." Pilgrim said, "I understand, I understand."

The Great Sage used a spell of invisibility and slipped into the Daoist boys' room to look around; it turned out that the two Daoist boys, having eaten the fruit, had gone up to the hall to talk with Tang Seng, and were not in the room.Sun Wukong looked all around to see what this "golden striker" might be, and saw only, hanging on the window lattice, a length of red gold about two feet long and as thick as a finger;at the bottom was a knob shaped like a garlic bulb, and at the top was an eye, through which a green silk cord was strung.:「。」He said, "This must be the thing called the golden striker." So he took it down, went out of the room, and headed straight to the back, where he pushed open a pair of doors, raised his head to look, and — ah!It was a flower garden!Behold:

Sun Wukong could not take in all he saw, when he noticed another gate; he pushed it open and looked, and it turned out to be a vegetable garden:

:「。」Xingzhe laughed and said, "So he's a Daoist who grows his own food and eats it too."

Passing through the vegetable garden, he saw yet another gate.He pushed it open and looked, and — ah!Right in the middle stood a great tree, its green branches truly fragrant and its emerald leaves densely shading, the leaves themselves shaped much like banana leaves; it rose more than a thousand feet high, and its base measured seven or eight spans around.Xingzhe leaned against the tree and looked up, and on a branch facing south he spied a ginseng fruit that truly looked just like an infant. As it happened, at its rear end was a stem by which it hung, and watching it perched there at the branch tip, its hands and feet moving about, nodding and shaking its head, it seemed to make a sound whenever the wind passed.:「西Xingzhe was overjoyed beyond measure, and secretly praised it, saying, "What a fine thing!!」Truly rare, truly rare!" He leaned against the tree, and with a whoosh, sprang up into it.Now this monkey had always been champion at climbing trees to steal fruit. He struck the golden striker once, and the fruit came tumbling down with a thud.He too leapt down after it to search, but it had vanished without a trace;he searched all through the grass roundabout, but there was no sign of it whatsoever.

:「Xingzhe said, "Strange, strange. It must be that it has legs and can walk off, though even walking it couldn't jump over the wall.。」:「?」:「I understand now — it must be that the local earth god of this garden won't allow old Sun to steal his fruit, and has taken it away." So he formed a mudra with his fingers and recited the incantation "Om," summoning the garden's local earth god, who came before Xingzhe, bowed, and said, "The Great Sage has summoned this lowly deity — what are your orders?" Xingzhe said, "You don't know that old Sun is the most famous thief under Heaven — in years past I stole the peaches of immortality, filched the imperial wine, and pilfered the elixir of the gods, and no one ever dared claim a share against me.How is it that today, when I steal just one fruit of his, you snatch my share away from me?This fruit grew on the tree, and even a bird flying overhead ought to have a share of it — old Sun eating just one of them, what great harm is there in that??」:「How is it that the instant it was knocked down, you scooped it away?" The local deity said, "The Great Sage wrongs this lowly deity. This treasure belongs to an earthly immortal; this lowly deity is but a ghost-immortal — how would I dare take it?。」Even to smell it I have no such fortune, let alone smell it."

:「?」:「。」:「?」:「Xingzhe said, "If you truly never took it, then how did it disappear the moment it was knocked down?" The local deity said, "The Great Sage knows only that this treasure prolongs life, but knows nothing of where it comes from." Xingzhe said, "What is its origin then?" The local deity said, "This treasure blossoms once every three thousand years, bears fruit once every three thousand years, and takes another three thousand years to ripen fully.Counting the shortest span, that's ten thousand years, and in that time it bears only thirty fruits. For those with the fortune to smell one, it grants three hundred sixty years of life;to eat one grants forty-seven thousand years of life.。」:「?」:「But it is feared by, and fears, the Five Elements." Xingzhe said, "How does it fear the Five Elements?" The local deity said, "This fruit falls when it meets metal, withers when it meets wood, dissolves when it meets water, scorches when it meets fire, and sinks into the ground when it meets earth. To strike it down, one must use a metal implement, only then will it come down.Once knocked down, it must be caught in a tray lined and cushioned with a silk cloth. If it touches any wooden implement, it will wither at once, and even eating it then would grant no long life.To eat it, one must use porcelain vessels, and dissolve it in clear water before consuming it.If it meets fire, it scorches and becomes useless. As for meeting earth and sinking in — just now, Great Sage, the moment you knocked it to the ground, it burrowed down into the earth. This soil here is forty-seven thousand years old; even a steel drill could not bore into it in the slightest, being three or four parts harder than raw iron, and if a person eats it, that is why it grants longevity.。」If the Great Sage does not believe this, you may try striking this ground and see." Xingzhe at once drew out his gold-banded staff and pounded the ground once; there was a resounding crack, the staff bounced back up, and yet the ground bore not the slightest mark.:「Xingzhe said, "Indeed, indeed. This staff of mine shatters stone to powder when it strikes it, and even leaves a dent when it strikes raw iron — how is it that this one blow left not the least mark?。」In that case, I have wrongly blamed you — you may go back now." The local deity thereupon returned to his own shrine.

The Great Sage now had a plan: he climbed up the tree, using the striker in one hand, while with the other he pulled up the front flap of his brocade robe to make a sling to catch the fruit in; he then moved among the branches and leaves, struck down three fruits, and gathered them into the fold of his robe.He jumped down from the tree and went straight ahead, heading directly to the kitchen.:「?」:「Bajie laughed and said, "Brother, did you get any?" Xingzhe said, "Isn't this it?Whatever old Sun sets his hand to, he brings home.。」:「。」 :「As for this fruit, let's not leave Sha Seng out of it either — go ahead and call him." Bajie at once waved his hand and called out, "Wujing, come here." Sha Seng, having set down the luggage, ran into the kitchen and said, "Brother, what are you calling me for?" Xingzhe opened up the fold of his robe and said, "Brother, look — what is this thing?" Sha Seng saw it and said, "It's a ginseng fruit." Xingzhe said, "Well now!?」:「輿You actually recognize it — have you eaten one somewhere before?" Sha Seng said, "Little brother has never eaten one, but in former times, when I served as the Curtain-Raising General and attended the imperial carriage to the Peach Banquet, I once saw the immortals from beyond the seas present this fruit to the Queen Mother as a birthday offering.便Seeing it, yes, I have seen it before, but I have never eaten it.?」:「。」Brother, would you let me have a taste of it?" Xingzhe said, "No need to say more — among brothers, one each."

The three of them each took one of the three fruits and enjoyed it.便Now Bajie had a huge appetite and a huge mouth besides; partly because, hearing the boys eating earlier, he had already felt his hunger stirred, and now that he actually saw the fruit, he snatched it up, opened his mouth wide, and gulped it down whole in one go.:「?」:「。」:「?」:「。──?」:「Then, with wide innocent eyes, he pestered the other two, saying to Xingzhe and Sha Seng, "What was it you two just ate?" Sha Seng said, "A ginseng fruit." Bajie said, "What did it taste like?" Xingzhe said, "Wujing, pay him no mind — you already gobbled yours down first, so who else is there to ask?" Bajie said, "Brother, I ate it in too much of a hurry, not like you two chewing slowly and savoring it to taste the flavor.I don't even know whether it had a pit or not — I just swallowed it whole.Brother, ah, if you're going to help a man, help him all the way.調。」:「You've already stirred up this hunger of mine — go get another one, and let old Zhu eat it properly this time, bit by bit." Xingzhe said, "Brother, you really don't know when to stop.西This is not like rice or noodles, which you can eat your fill of.Given that in ten thousand years it only bears thirty fruits, our eating even this one apiece is already a matter of very great fortune, not something ordinary.。」Enough, enough, enough. That's plenty." He then rose up, and taking the golden striker, tossed it in through the window of the Daoist boys' room without their noticing, and paid him no more attention.

That fool just went on muttering and grumbling endlessly.。」:「:『。』?」:「As luck would have it, the two Daoist boys had come back into the room to fetch tea to serve, and just then they heard Bajie still ranting about something like, "Eating that ginseng fruit wasn't satisfying at all — it'd be good to get another one to eat properly." Qingfeng heard this and grew suspicious in his heart, saying, "Mingyue, listen to what that long-mouthed monk is saying: 'Still want another ginseng fruit to eat.' Our master warned us before he left to guard against his followers making trouble — could it be that he's stolen our treasure?" Mingyue turned his head and said, "Brother, this is bad, this is bad — how did the golden striker end up fallen on the ground?。」Let's go to the garden and take a look."

The two of them hurried off in a rush, and saw that the flower garden gate was open.:「?」Qingfeng said, "I was the one who closed this gate — how did it come to be open?" He hurried on further past the flower garden, and saw that the vegetable garden gate was open too. They rushed into the ginseng garden, leaned against the tree, and looked up counting; going back and forth over the count, they found only twenty-two.:「?」:「。」:「Mingyue said, "Can you reckon accounts?" Qingfeng said, "I can — you tell me as we go." Mingyue said, "Originally there were thirty fruits; when our master opened the garden he shared out and ate two, leaving twenty-eight;just now two were knocked down and given to Tang Seng to eat, leaving twenty-six;now there are only twenty-two left — isn't that four short?。」No need to say more, no need to say more — it must surely be that gang of wicked men who stole them; let's go and give Tang Seng a scolding."

The two of them went out through the garden gate and headed straight for the hall, and pointing at Tang Seng, cursed him up and down as bald this and bald that, filthy words and foul language pouring endlessly from their mouths;"thieving, rat-brained" and other stinking abuse both short and long, they railed on in a fit of temper.:「Tang Seng, unable to bear it any longer, said, "Immortal boys, what is all this fuss about?。」:「Calm down a little — if you have something to say, say it slowly, there's no need for wild, scattered talk." Qingfeng said, "Are your ears deaf?I'm speaking plain words — don't you understand??」:「?」:「?」:「You stole and ate the ginseng fruit — how can you not let me speak of it?" Tang Seng said, "What does a ginseng fruit even look like?" Mingyue said, "The one just brought to you to eat — didn't you say it looked like an infant?" Tang Seng said, "Amitabha!西The moment I laid eyes on that thing, my heart trembled and my gall quaked with fear — would I dare steal it to eat?Even if I were afflicted with the worst gluttony, I would not dare commit such a thievish act.。」:「。」:「Do not wrongly accuse an innocent person." Qingfeng said, "Even if you yourself never ate it, you still have followers under you who wanted to steal and eat it." Sanzang said, "That much may well be true — you needn't shout just yet; let me question them and see.。」:「If it turns out they truly stole it, I will have them make it up to you." Mingyue said, "Make it up, indeed!?」:「:『。』便Even with money, where would one go to buy such a thing?" Sanzang said, "Even if there's money but nowhere to buy it, as the saying goes, 'Benevolence and righteousness are worth a thousand pieces of gold.' Let them offer you an apology in recompense, and that will settle it.。」:「Besides, it isn't even certain yet whether it was him or not." Mingyue said, "How could it not be him?。」:「。」:「There they are, quarreling over an uneven split, still bickering over there." Sanzang called out, "Disciples, all of you come here." Sha Seng, hearing this, said, "This is bad, it's given away.?」:「The old master is calling us, and the little Daoist boys are cursing wildly at each other — if this isn't the old story leaking out, then what is it?" Xingzhe said, "You'd embarrass a person to death.。」:「。」殿This is nothing more than a matter of food and drink; if it comes out, it will simply mean we stole a snack — just don't admit to it." Bajie said, "Right, right, let's just play dumb about it." The three of them had no choice but to leave the kitchen and go up to the hall.

In the end, we do not know how they managed to deny it to him; listen to the explanation in the next chapter.

What it’s about

At the Temple of Five Villages on Longevity Mountain lives the Earth-Immortal Zhenyuan, away at a lecture, who leaves two boy attendants to offer Tripitaka two ginseng fruits from a tree that flowers and fruits only once in millennia. The fruit looks exactly like a newborn child, and the horrified monk refuses to eat it, so the boys consume the pair themselves before his eyes.

Bajie, overhearing, badgers Wukong into stealing some. Wukong takes a golden rod to knock the fruit down, but the first one vanishes into the earth on falling, and he learns the tree recoils from metal, wood, water, fire and soil alike. He fetches three fruits by other means and the disciples eat them, only for the returning boys to count the tree and raise a furious outcry over the theft.

When it was written 背景

This 回 opens the longest self-contained episode of the early journey, and its tone is domestic mischief rather than mortal peril. The ginseng-fruit tree, its five-element sensitivities and the child-shaped fruit are the images to hold onto. Learners should notice that the trouble here is caused by the pilgrims themselves, greed and theft, not by any demon, which sets up a rare arc in which Wukong is plainly in the wrong and will have to make amends.
