The Four Pilgrims' Resolve Is Tested by Transformed Bodhisattvas

023Chapter 23

This chapter tells how the Way of fetching the scriptures never departs from the single person's Way of tending to one's own root.西Now it tells how the master and his three disciples, having comprehended True Suchness, suddenly broke free of the locks of dust, leapt of themselves out of the sea of nature and the River of Flowing Sands, utterly without hindrance, and headed straight down the highway toward the west. They passed through green hills and blue waters beyond counting, and gazed upon wild grasses and idle flowers without end.Truly time flies swiftly — once again it was the ninth month of autumn, and here is what they saw:

As they were walking along, before they knew it the sky grew dark.:「?」:「Sanzang said, "Disciple, the sky is growing dark again — where shall we find lodging tonight?" Wukong said, "Master, that's not the right way to talk.宿Those who have left the household life dine on wind and lodge by water, sleep beneath the moon and rest in frost — anywhere at all is home.?」:「Why ask where we'll spend the night?" Zhu Bajie said, "Brother, don't you know that walking is easy for you — what do you care about the burden weighing others down?Ever since we crossed the River of Flowing Sands, I've been climbing mountains and crossing ridges all this while, carrying a heavy load on my back — it's been terribly hard to bear.。」:「We really ought to find some household — first to beg a bit of tea and rice, and second to rest and restore our spirits. That would be the sensible thing." Wukong said, "Idiot, talk like that sounds like you harbor complaints. If you're still hoping for the same lazy ease you had at Gao Village, leaning on indolence and asking nothing of fortune, I'm afraid that won't do.。」:「?」:「?」:「Once you've taken up the righteous gate of Buddhism, you must eat bitterness and endure hardship — only then can you be a proper disciple." Bajie said, "Brother, look at how heavy this load of luggage is!" Wukong said, "Brother, ever since you and Sha Monk joined us, I've never once carried it — how would I know how heavy it is?" Bajie said, "Brother, just look at the count of it:

。」:「?」:「。」:「With so much luggage as this, it's hard on old Pig, having to carry it day after day all by myself, while you get to be the master's disciple and turn me into a hired hand." Wukong laughed and said, "Idiot, who are you talking to?" Bajie said, "Brother, I'm talking to you." Wukong said, "You're talking to the wrong one.Old Monkey is only responsible for the master's welfare; you and Sha Monk are in sole charge of the luggage and the horse.。」:「If you're the least bit careless about it, your ankle bones will get a good thrashing with a coarse club first." Bajie said, "Brother, don't talk about beating — beating is just bullying by brute strength.I know your lordly nature is proud, and you'll certainly refuse to carry it.。」But the horse the master rides is so tall and sturdy, and it carries nothing but the old monk alone — if we had it carry a few extra pieces, that would only be brotherly feeling."

Wukong said, "You call him a horse, but he's no ordinary horse. He was originally the son of Ao Run, the Dragon King of the Western Sea, called the Third Prince, Dragon-Horse.殿It was only because he set fire to and burned the bright pearl above the palace hall that his father reported him for filial disobedience, and his crime violated the laws of Heaven; it was thanks to Bodhisattva Guanyin that his life was spared.退西He waited long for the master at Eagle's Grief Gorge, and fortunately the Bodhisattva came in person, stripped away his scales and horns, removed the pearl beneath his neck, and only then did he transform into this horse, willing to carry the master to worship Buddha in the Western Heaven.。」:「?」:「。」:「This is all a matter of each person's own merit — don't try to draw comparisons with him." Sha Monk, hearing this, said, "Brother, is he truly a dragon?" Wukong said, "He's a dragon." Bajie said, "Brother, I've heard the ancients say: a dragon can spew clouds and breathe mist, scatter earth and raise sand;it has the skill to grip mountains and span ridges, and the divine power to overturn rivers and churn seas.?」:「。」Why then does he walk so slowly today?" Wukong said, "If you want him to go fast, I'll make him go fast for you to see."

The splendid Great Sage gave his gold-banded staff a shake, and ten thousand strands of colored cloud sprang up.When the horse saw the staff raised, fearing a blow was coming, it panicked, and its four hooves flew as swift as lightning, dashing off with a whoosh.辿The master's hands were too weak to rein him in, and letting the horse's wild nature run its course, it bolted up onto a mountain cliff before finally slowing to a great, lumbering walk.Only when the master's breath had steadied did he raise his head and see in the distance a cluster of pine shade, within which stood a few houses, truly imposing in appearance. Behold:

Just as the master was reining in the horse and slowly taking in the view, he saw Wukong and the others arriving.:「?」:「。」:「。」:「Wujing said, "Master, weren't you thrown from the horse?" The elder scolded, "That reckless ape Wukong startled the horse — it's a good thing I could still stay in the saddle." Wukong said with a placating smile, "Master, don't scold me, it was all Zhu Bajie saying the horse walked too slowly, so I made it go faster." The idiot, from running after the horse, had walked himself out of breath, panting and gasping, and grumbled under his breath, "That's enough, that's enough — my belly's showing, and my belt's come loose.。」 The load is heavy, I can't even hoist it up, and now you've made me run myself ragged chasing the horse." The elder said, "Disciples, look — over there is a manor house; we can go and ask to lodge there." When Wukong heard this, he hastily raised his head and looked, and indeed saw auspicious clouds enveloping the place in midair, propitious mists filling the sky; he knew at once this must be some Buddha or immortal working a transformation, but he dared not leak the secret of Heaven, and only said, "Good, good, good — let's go and ask for lodging."

The elder hastily dismounted. They saw a gate tower with hanging lotus carvings and elephant-trunk brackets, painted rafters and carved beams.:「。」:「Sha Monk set down the load, and Bajie led the horse, saying, "This household is an exceptionally wealthy and prosperous family." Wukong was about to go straight in, but Sanzang said, "No, you mustn't. You and I are men who have left the household life; we must each avoid suspicion, and by no means enter uninvited. Let us wait until someone comes out, and only then, with proper courtesy, ask to lodge — that would be right." Bajie tethered the horse and leaned aslant against the base of the wall;Sanzang sat down on a stone drum;Wukong and Sha Monk sat by the edge of the terrace foundation. For a long while no one came out, and Wukong, being impatient by nature, sprang up and went in through the gate to look; there he found three large south-facing halls, their curtained lattice windows raised high.On the screen door hung a horizontal scroll painting of Longevity Mountain and the Sea of Blessings;:「on the two gilded pillars on either side was pasted a spring couplet on bright red paper, which read: "Silken threads flutter from tender willows at the level bridge in the evening;。」退Snow dots the fragrant plum blossoms in the small courtyard's spring." Right in the center stood a small table of dull black lacquer, upon which sat an antique bronze incense burner shaped like a beast.Above were six folding chairs, and on the walls at either end hung hanging screens depicting the four seasons.

Just as Wukong was peeking about, he suddenly heard the sound of footsteps from within the back door, and out came a woman neither old nor young, who asked in a delicate voice, "Who is this, daring to enter a widow's gate uninvited?" Flustered, the Great Sage bowed repeatedly, saying, "This humble monk comes from the Great Tang of the Eastern Land, and travels by imperial decree to worship Buddha and seek scriptures in the West.。」:「Our party of four is passing through your precious region, and since the day has grown late, we have come specially to your honored estate, venerable Bodhisattva, to beg lodging for one night." The woman greeted him with a smiling word, saying, "Reverend, where are those other three?。」:「。」Please invite them in." Wukong called out loudly, "Master, please come in!" Only then did Sanzang, together with Bajie and Sha Monk, lead the horse and carry the load inside, and they saw the woman come out of the hall to receive them.Bajie stole a look with half-lidded, lustful eyes — and you may ask, how was she dressed:

When the woman saw the other three, she grew even more delighted, and with proper courtesy invited them into the hall. After they had all exchanged greetings, she invited each of them to be seated and to take tea. From behind the screen there suddenly appeared a young maidservant with her hair done up in twin tufts trailing silk threads, carrying a golden tray and white jade cups; the fragrant tea steamed with warm vapor, and rare fruits gave off a subtle fragrance. The girl's colorful sleeves swayed, her fingers slender as spring bamboo shoots;she raised the jade cups and passed the tea round in offering. She bowed to each of them in turn. When the tea was finished, the woman also gave orders to prepare a vegetarian meal.:「Sanzang raised his hands in greeting and said, "Venerable Bodhisattva, may I ask your honored surname??」:「西And what is the name of this honored place?" The woman said, "This is the land of Aparagodaniya, the Western Continent. My maiden family's surname is Jia, and my husband's family's surname is Mo.As a young woman I suffered misfortune, my parents-in-law died early, and my husband and I kept and carried on the ancestral estate together. We had household wealth of tens of thousands in cash, and a thousand acres of fine farmland. As husband and wife, fate gave us no son; we bore only three daughters. Two years ago, great misfortune struck again, and I lost my husband as well.滿I have lived as a widow ever since, and this year my period of mourning has come to an end.All that is left behind is the land and the family estate, with no other kin or relatives at all — only my daughters and I remain to carry it on.I have thought of marrying elsewhere, but find it hard to part with the family property. Now that you reverend elders have happened to descend upon us — a master and three disciples, four in all — and since my daughters and I are also four women, I have been thinking of settling here and taking husbands into the family; the four of you would match perfectly.。」I do not know whether your honored intentions would consent to this or not." Hearing this, Sanzang feigned deafness and pretended to be mute, closed his eyes to settle his mind, and remained silent, giving no answer.

:「The woman said, "My humble household owns over three hundred acres of paddy land, over three hundred acres of dry farmland, and over three hundred acres of mountain orchards and fruit groves;we have more than a thousand head of yellow water buffalo, mules and horses in herds, and countless pigs and sheep;西to the east, south, west, and north there are sixty or seventy manors, strongholds, and pasturelands in all;穿使in our stores are grain and rice enough that we need not touch for eight or nine years, silks and damasks enough that we need not wear for ten years and more, and gold and silver enough that we could never spend it in a lifetime — far better than any embroidered curtain hiding a springtime romance, to say nothing of a mere two rows of golden hairpins.西?」If you, master and disciples, are willing to change your minds and become married-in sons-in-law of this humble family, you may live at ease and enjoy glory and splendor — would that not be far better than toiling on toward the West?" But Sanzang remained as if dazed and dull-witted, silent and saying nothing at all.

:「The woman said, "I was born in the hour of You, on the third day of the third month, in the year Dinghai; my late husband was three years older than I, and I am forty-five years old this year.My eldest daughter is named Zhenzhen, twenty years old this year;my second daughter is named Ai'ai, eighteen years old this year;my third and youngest daughter is named Lianlian, sixteen years old this year — none of them has yet been promised in marriage to any family.Though I myself am plain and unlovely, fortunately my daughters all have a good measure of beauty, and there is nothing in women's needlework and embroidery they cannot do.Because my late husband had no son, he raised them as though they were sons; when they were small he also had them study some of the Confucian classics, so they all know something of composing poems and matching couplets.Though we dwell in a mountain manor, we are by no means of a coarse and vulgar sort, and I dare say we are fit to be matched with you reverend elders. 便If you would only open your hearts, let your hair grow long again, and become the head of this household, wearing silk damask and fine brocade — would that not be far better than a clay begging bowl and black monk's robe, straw sandals and a bamboo rain hat?" Sanzang sat there just like a child startled by thunder, or a toad drenched by rain: he only sat stiff and dazed, rolling his eyes back and tipping over.

When Bajie heard of such riches and such beauty, his heart itched so that he could hardly bear it;sitting there in his chair, he was like a man with a needle pricking his backside, twisting left and right, unable to hold himself still.:「He walked up and gave the master a tug, saying, "Master, this good lady has spoken to you at such length — why do you pretend not to hear and pay her no heed?。」退:「You really ought to give her some sort of answer." The master suddenly raised his head and, with a shout, drove Bajie back, scolding, "You wretched beast!。」We are men who have left the household life — how could we let riches move our hearts or beauty catch our attention? What manner of principle would that make?"

:「The woman laughed and said, "How pitiable, how pitiable.?」:「?」:「What good is there in leaving the household life?" Sanzang said, "Bodhisattva, and what good is there in remaining a layperson in the household?" The woman said, "Reverend, please sit, and let me tell you the good points of a layperson's life. How can this be shown? There is a poem to prove it.The poem says:

Sanzang said, "Bodhisattva, you as a layperson enjoy glory and splendor, receive riches and rank, have clothes to wear and food to eat, and your children are gathered around you in reunion — it is indeed good. But you may not know that we who have left the household life also have our own share of good points. How can this be shown? There is a poem to prove it.The poem says:

:「When the woman heard this, she grew greatly angry and said, "This insolent monk is so rude!If I did not consider that you have come all this way from the Eastern Land, I would have you driven out at once. Here I am, sincere and true of heart, wishing to bring you all into my family as married-in sons-in-law, and instead you turn your words to wound me.?」:「。」:「。」:「。」 :「Even if you have taken the precepts and made a vow never to return to secular life, surely your followers under you — my family could still take in one of them as a husband. Why must you be so rigidly bound by the rule?" Seeing her grow angry, Sanzang could only humble himself again and again, and called out, "Wukong, you stay here then." Wukong said, "I've never known how to do that sort of thing since I was small — let Bajie stay here instead." Bajie said, "Brother, don't go pinning it on me — let's all think this over carefully." Sanzang said, "If the two of you won't consent, then let Wujing stay here." Sha Monk said, "Just listen to what the master says. This disciple, favored by the Bodhisattva's guidance and conversion, received the precepts and conduct, and waited for the master.Ever since the master took me in and further granted me his teaching, I have followed the master not even two months yet, and have not made the slightest bit of merit — how would I dare to covet such riches?西。」I would rather die than fail to go to the Western Heaven — I will absolutely never do such a thing that betrays my own conscience."

Seeing that they all refused and declined, the woman hastily turned and withdrew behind the screen, and shut the inner door with a bang. The master and his disciples were left standing outside, with neither tea nor food, and no one came out again.:「Bajie grew anxious and irritated at heart, and complained to Tang Sanzang, saying, "Master, you're simply no good at handling things — you talked until you shut every door completely. You really ought to have left yourself some room to maneuver, given a vague sort of answer, and coaxed some vegetarian food out of her to eat — tonight we'd have had a night of ease and pleasure.Whether we agree or not tomorrow would then be up to you and me.?」As it is, with the door shut and no one coming out, how are we to get through the night with cold ashes and a bare stove?"

:「。」:「Wujing said, "Second Brother, why don't you just become a son-in-law in this household." Bajie said, "Brother, don't go pinning it on me — let's think this over carefully." Wukong said, "What is there to think over?便婿If you're willing, we'll simply have the master become in-laws with the woman, and you can be the son-in-law who moves into her household.?」:「便。」:「?」:「With a family as wealthy as this, they're sure to provide a dowry and lay out a feast to unite the families, and we'd get to enjoy some of it too — you'd return to lay life right here — wouldn't that be the best of both worlds?" Bajie said, "It sounds fine to put it that way, but the trouble is I already left secular life once and would be returning to it again, and I already have a wife, and would be taking another wife on top of her." Sha Monk said, "So Second Brother already has a wife?" Wukong said, "You don't know about him yet.婿He was originally the son-in-law of old Squire Gao of Gao Village in Wusizang, but was subdued by old Monkey.西He too had once received the Bodhisattva's precepts and conduct, and having no other choice, I caught him and made him a monk, so he abandoned his former wife and came to join the master in going west to worship Buddha.I suppose it's been so long since he parted from her that he's started thinking of that old business again, and now, having just heard of this matter, he's certainly got that same idea in mind once more. :「Idiot, why don't you just become this family's son-in-law — only you'll have to kowtow to old Monkey a good many extra times, and I won't expose you, that's all." The idiot said, "Nonsense, nonsense.Everyone here has the same idea in their hearts, and yet you single out old Pig to make a fool of.:『。』As the saying goes, 'Monks are hungry ghosts for lust.' Who among us wouldn't want this?Everyone puts on such coy, mincing airs, and between you all a perfectly good thing has been ruined completely, so that now we can't even get so much as tea or water, and no one tends the lamps either.Even if we endure through tonight, that horse must carry the master and walk on again tomorrow — if he goes hungry through this whole night too, we might as well just skin him.。」You all sit here, and let old Pig go take the horse out to graze."

The idiot hastily and eagerly untied the reins and led the horse out.:「。」 :「。」Wukong said, "Sha Monk, you stay and keep the master company here for now, while old Monkey follows him to see just where he takes the horse to graze." Sanzang said, "Wukong, if you go watch him, go ahead, but you mustn't keep teasing him without end." Wukong said, "I understand." With that, the Great Sage walked out of the hall, shook himself, and transformed into a little red dragonfly, flew out through the front gate, and caught up with Bajie.

The fool led the horse along, and even where there was grass he did not let it graze, but went clip-clop, clip-clop, driving the horse around toward the back gate. There he saw the woman, with her three daughters, standing idly outside the back gate, amusing themselves looking at the chrysanthemums. When the mother and daughters saw Bajie coming, the three girls slipped back inside.:「?」。」:「The woman stood still at the gate and said, "Young master, where are you off to?" The fool dropped the reins, stepped forward, made a bow, and said, "Mother, I've come to graze the horse." The woman said, "Your master is altogether too fussy and particular.婿西?」:「If he had taken a son-in-law's place in my household, wouldn't that beat being a wandering monk trudging the road west?" Bajie laughed and said, "They are carrying out the Tang Emperor's decree, and dare not disobey the ruler's command, so they will not agree to this thing.。」:「。」:「Just now, in the front hall, they were all putting me down, and I too feel rather torn this way and that, only I fear, Mother, that you dislike my long snout and big ears." The woman said, "I do not dislike them either; it's only that there is no man of the house here, so taking one in as a husband would do well enough — I only fear my young daughter might find you somewhat ugly." Bajie said, "Mother, do tell your daughter not to be so choosy about a husband.Consider that Tang monk of mine — handsome as he is in looks, he is in truth of no real use.。」:「?」:「Ugly as I am, ugly though I be, I have a few lines to say for myself, a sort of chant." The woman said, "How do you mean, what do you say?" Bajie said, "I:

:「。」:「。」The woman said, "Since you are capable of managing household affairs, go back and talk it over carefully with your master once more — if there's no awkwardness in it, then I shall take you in as son-in-law." Bajie said, "No need to talk it over — he is not my own father who bore me, whether I do this or not is entirely up to me." The woman said, "Very well, very well, let me go speak with my young daughter." Watch as she slips back inside, and with a snap shuts the back gate behind her.

Bajie did not even bother grazing the horse, but pulled it forward and led it away.:「。」:「。」Little did they know that the Great Sage Sun already knew everything down to the last detail; he had turned his wings and flown back, resumed his true form, and gone first to see Tang Priest, saying, "Master, Wuneng has brought the horse back." The elder said, "If the horse were not led back, I feared it might have run off happily on its own." Xingzhe burst out laughing, and told the whole affair of what the woman and Bajie had said to each other from beginning to end, while Sanzang seemed half inclined to believe it and half not.

After a short while, they saw the fool pulling the horse along to tie it up.:「?」:「。」:「?」The elder said, "Did you let the horse graze?" Bajie said, "There was no good grass, nowhere to graze it." Xingzhe said, "If there was nowhere to graze the horse, was there perhaps somewhere to lead it, though?" When the fool heard these words, he knew at once that the news had leaked out, and so he hung his head and twisted his neck, pouted his lips and knitted his brows, and for a good while said nothing. Then they heard a creaking sound as the side gate opened, and there appeared two pairs of red lanterns and a hand-carried censer, with fragrant incense-clouds drifting and girdle-jades tinkling, as the woman, bringing her three daughters, came walking out, calling them Zhenzhen, Ai'ai, and Lianlian, to pay their respects to these persons journeying for the scriptures. The girls lined up in the hall and bowed toward the elders. They were indeed lovely and comely to look at — behold them thus:

Sanzang pressed his palms together and lowered his head, the Great Sage Sun pretended not to notice at all, and Sha Monk turned his back and faced away.:「Just look at that Zhu Bajie — his eyes fixed unblinking, his lustful heart in turmoil, his lecherous boldness running wild, he twisted and squirmed and murmured soft words, saying in a low voice, "I am much obliged that the immortal maidens have descended.。」Mother, please ask the young ladies to withdraw now." The three girls turned and went back behind the screen, leaving a pair of gauze lanterns behind.:「?」:「。」:「。」:「The woman said, "Would the four elders be so kind as to consider which of you should be matched to my young daughter?" Wujing said, "We have already discussed it — the one surnamed Zhu shall be taken in as son-in-law here." Bajie said, "Brother, don't put this on me, let's still decide it by general agreement." Xingzhe said, "What more is there to decide? You yourself already settled it all so neatly at the back gate just now, and Mother has already called for you — what more is there to weigh?Master shall stand as the groom's-side kin, this old lady shall stand as the bride's-side kin, and old Sun here shall act as guarantor of the match, while Sha Monk shall act as go-between. :「?」:「There's no need even to consult the almanac — today happens to be a day of Heaven's Grace and great auspiciousness; you shall come pay respects to your master, then go inside and become the son-in-law." Bajie said, "This won't do, this won't do, how could this business possibly be carried out properly?" Xingzhe said, "Fool, don't play coy — how many times has that mouth of yours already called her 'Mother,' and now you say it won't do?。」 Quick, agree to it, and let us come along to drink some wedding wine — that would do us all some good." With one hand he seized hold of Bajie, and with the other he grabbed the woman, saying, "Mother-in-law, take your son-in-law inside." The fool went along with stumbling, reluctant steps, as if wanting to go elsewhere.:「The woman at once called for the serving boys: "Wipe down the tables and chairs, lay out the evening vegetarian meal, and attend to our three honored in-laws.。」I shall take my son-in-law off to his room now." At the same time she gave orders to the cooks to prepare a banquet feast, so that the families might meet formally the next morning. The several serving boys received these orders and went off to carry them out.The three of them ate their meal, and in a bustle everything was hastily arranged, and they all settled down to rest in the guest quarters — no need to speak further of that.

Now to tell of Bajie, following his mother-in-law, walking inward — through how many layers of rooms and buildings he could not say, stumbling and bumping along, for everywhere there were thresholds to trip his feet.:「。」:「。」:「。」The fool said, "Mother, walk a bit slower — I don't know my way around here, please guide me along." The woman said, "These are all just the granary, the storehouse, the mill-room and other such rooms, we still haven't even reached the kitchen area." Bajie said, "What a grand household this is." Stumbling and bumping, turning this corner and that, they walked on for another good while before at last reaching the inner hall chambers.:「婿The woman said, "Son-in-law, your elder martial brother said today is a day of Heaven's Grace and great auspiciousness, so he had you taken in as son-in-law at once. But it was all so sudden and hurried that there was no time to invite a geomancer to arrange a proper wedding ceremony with bowing at the hall and the scattering of the curtain.。」:「You may simply bow eight times facing upward, and that will do." Bajie said, "Mother speaks rightly.?」:「Please take the seat of honor, and let me bow a few times as well — that shall serve at once as the hall ceremony and as thanks to the in-laws, two matters in one — isn't that a saving of trouble?" His mother-in-law laughed and said, "Very well, very well.婿Truly this is a son-in-law who knows how to save trouble and manage a household.。」I shall sit here, and you shall bow."

Ah!滿The whole hall was ablaze with silver candles, as the fool bowed facing upward in homage.:「?」:「When the bowing was done, he said, "Mother, which of the young ladies will you match to me?" His mother-in-law said, "That is exactly the difficulty: if I match my eldest daughter to you, I fear the second will resent it;if I match the second daughter to you, I fear the third will resent it;。」:「。」:「if I intend the third daughter for you, then I fear the eldest will resent it — and so in the end I have not been able to decide." Bajie said, "Mother, since you fear they will quarrel over it, just give me all three, and spare us the noise and squabbling that would upset the household order." His mother-in-law said, "What kind of talk is that!!」:「Would you alone take all three of my daughters for yourself!" Bajie said, "Listen to what you're saying, Mother — who doesn't have three wives and four concubines these days?婿Even if there were a few more besides, your son-in-law would gladly accept them with thanks.。」:「In my young days, I also once studied methods of fierce combat, and I can assure you I would serve each and every one of them to her full satisfaction." The woman said, "No, that won't do, that won't do.。」I have here a kerchief — put it over your head to cover your face, and try your luck at a Heaven-sent match: I shall have my daughters walk past you one by one, and whichever one you catch hold of with your outstretched hands, that one shall be matched to you." The fool did as told, took the kerchief, and put it over his head. There is a poem as proof. The poem says:

When the fool had the covering properly wrapped, he said, "Mother, please have the young ladies come out now." His mother-in-law called out: "Zhenzhen, Ai'ai, Lianlian, all of you come try the Heaven-sent match, to be wedded to your son-in-law." All that could be heard was the tinkling clatter of girdle-jades and the fragrant scent of musk and orchid, as though immortal maidens were passing to and fro.The fool truly did stretch out his hands to grope for someone, flailing wildly on both sides, but grasped nothing to the left, and caught nothing to the right.Back and forth, to and fro, who knows how many girls seemed to be moving about, yet never could he manage to catch hold of a single one.西Lunging east he embraced a pillar, groping west he touched a wooden partition wall.Running dizzily from one end to the other, he could not keep his footing, and kept tumbling and falling.Coming forward he stumbled against the door panel, going back he knocked into the brick wall, bumping and bashing about, until he fell battered, his mouth swollen and his forehead bruised, and sat down flat on the ground.:「?」Panting and gasping for breath, he said, "Oh Mother, your daughters are far too slippery and nimble — I can't catch a single one, whatever shall I do, whatever shall I do?"

:「。」 The woman then lifted the covering from his head and said, "Son-in-law, it is not that my daughters are so slippery — it is that they are all being modest and yielding to one another, none willing to take you." Bajie said, "Oh Mother, since none of them is willing to take me, then why don't you take me yourself." The woman said, "What a fine son-in-law indeed! So lacking in any sense of proper order, that you'd even want to take your own mother-in-law?These three daughters of mine each have the cleverest of hands and hearts, and each of them has stitched, with her own hands, a pearl-studded, brocade-trimmed undershirt. Whichever one's shirt you manage to put on, that one I shall have marry you." Bajie said, "Good, good, good — bring all three garments here for me to try on, and if I can wear all of them, then just let all three marry me." The woman turned and went back into the room, but brought out only a single one, and handed it to Bajie.穿The fool took off his blue brocade robe, took the shirt, and put it on his body at once. But before he had even fastened the sash, there came a sudden snap, and he tumbled and fell flat to the ground. It turned out to be several ropes binding him tightly. The fool, unable to bear the pain, found that all these people had already vanished without a trace.

Now to tell of Sanzang, Xingzhe, and Sha Monk — they woke from a sound sleep to find, before they knew it, the east already turning pale with dawn.Startled, they opened their eyes and lifted their heads to look about, and lo, there was no grand mansion or lofty hall to be seen anywhere, nor any carved beams and painted rafters — instead, each of them was lying asleep in a grove of pines and cypresses. In alarm the elder hastily called out to Xingzhe.:「。」:「?」:「?」:「Sha Monk said, "Brother, it's over, it's over, we've run into ghosts." The Great Sage Sun understood full well in his heart, and said with a faint smile, "What do you mean by that?" The elder said, "Look where we have been sleeping!" Xingzhe said, "Sleeping here beneath these pines has been comfortable enough and no trouble at all.。」:「?」:「。」But I do wonder where that fool is now, suffering his punishment." The elder said, "Who is suffering punishment?" Xingzhe said with a laugh, "Yesterday that household of mother and daughters — I do not know which Bodhisattva it was — appeared here to test and enlighten us; it seems they departed in the middle of the night, and only poor Zhu Bajie is left to suffer for it." When Sanzang heard this, he pressed his palms together and bowed in reverence. Then they saw, on an old cypress tree behind them, a note fluttering and dangling, hung up for them to see.Sha Monk hurried over to fetch it and bring it to show his master, and it turned out to be a verse of eight lines, which read:

:「。」:「?」:「。」:「。」:「Just as the elder, Xingzhe, and Sha Monk were reciting this verse aloud, they heard, from deep within the grove, a loud voice crying out: "Master, ah, I'm bound so tight it's killing me, save me, oh save me, I'll never do it again!" Sanzang said, "Wukong, is that cry perhaps Wuneng's voice?" Sha Monk said, "It is indeed." Xingzhe said, "Brother, pay him no mind, let us be on our way." Sanzang said, "Though that fool is foolish and stubborn by nature, he is at least single-mindedly simple and honest, and besides he has some real strength in him, for carrying the luggage.。」Still bearing in mind that Bodhisattva's compassionate intent of that day, let us save him and take him along with us — I daresay he will never dare do such a thing again." So Sha Monk rolled up the bedding and packed up the carrying-pole;the Great Sage Sun untied the reins and led the horse, guiding Tang Priest into the grove to search and look.Ah!This is precisely the case:

In the end, we do not know whether fortune or misfortune awaits that fool — listen to the next chapter for the explanation.

What it’s about

A wealthy widow and her three beautiful daughters offer their whole household in marriage to the travellers, promising land, wealth and ease if only they abandon the journey west. Tripitaka sits stony and silent, Wukong and Sha decline, but Bajie's appetite gets the better of him and he sneaks back to volunteer as a son-in-law.

The women set him to catch a bride blindfolded among them, and every gown he grabs slips away until he is exhausted and roped fast in a magic sash. Dawn reveals no mansion at all, only bare woods and a note pinned in a tree: the widow and her daughters were Guanyin, Manjusri, Samantabhadra and the Bodhisattva of Mount Li, come to test whether the pilgrims' hearts were fixed.

When it was written 背景

This 回 is a staged temptation rather than a monster fight, and its lesson is aimed squarely at desire and half-heartedness. The four saints in disguise let the novel grade each pilgrim's resolve, and Bajie's public humiliation is the running comic-moral engine of the whole book. Learners can follow the marriage offer, the blindfold game and the morning note as three clean stages, and should watch for the recurring claim that the pilgrim's own wanting is the greatest danger on the road.
