Sha Wujing Is Subdued at the Flowing Sands River

022Chapter 22

西The story goes that Tang Seng and his two disciples, having escaped their ordeal, continued on their way; before long they had passed over Yellow Wind Ridge, and going west they came upon a stretch of level, open country.西Time flew swiftly by; summer passed into autumn, and they saw cold cicadas crying among withered willows, while the Great Fire star moved westward.Just as they were traveling along, they suddenly saw a great body of water with wild, raging waves, its turbid currents surging and swelling.:「?」:「。」:「Sanzang, still on his horse, called out urgently: 'Disciples, look how broad and vast the water is ahead — why do I see no boats moving upon it? How are we to cross over there?' Bajie, seeing it, said: 'Indeed it is a wild torrent, with no boat to ferry us across.' Xingzhe leapt up into the air, shaded his eyes with his hand to look, and he too was startled at heart, saying: 'Master, ah, this is truly hard, truly hard.''As for this river — if it were old Sun going across, I'd only need to give my waist a twist and I'd be over;'。」:「?」:「。」:「?」:「'but for the master, it is truly a thousand parts impossible to cross, ten thousand ages impossible to travel.' Sanzang said: 'Looking out from here, it stretches endlessly — just how wide is it really?' Xingzhe said: 'It runs some eight hundred li across.' Bajie said: 'Brother, how can you fix such a distance so exactly?' Xingzhe said: 'I won't hide it from you, worthy brother — these two eyes of old Sun's can, in broad daylight, make out good and ill fortune a thousand li away.'。」'Just now, up in the air, I could tell that although I don't know how far this river stretches up and down, I could see that it runs a full eight hundred li across.' The elder, worried and troubled, sighing, turned his horse back, when suddenly he saw a stone tablet standing on the bank.」;When the three of them came together to look, they saw three seal-script characters upon it, reading 'Flowing Sand River';and below, in small regular script, four lines of characters read:

Just as master and disciples were reading the inscription on the tablet, they suddenly heard the waves surge up like mountains and billow like ridges, and with a swishing sound a demon shot up out of the middle of the river, utterly fierce and hideous:

The monster, like a whirlwind, rushed up onto the bank, making straight for Tang Seng to seize him.In alarm, Xingzhe seized hold of his master, hurried up onto the high bank, and turned to make his escape.Bajie set down the carrying-pole and drew out his rake;便and swung it at the monster to strike.使The monster used his precious staff to block it.The two of them, on the bank of the Flowing Sand River, each displayed their prowess. What a fine fight this was:

Back and forth the two of them fought, through twenty bouts, without either gaining victory.

The Great Sage, guarding Tang Seng, held the horse's reins and kept watch over the luggage.:「Seeing Bajie locked in battle with the monster, he grew so vexed that he gnashed his teeth, rubbed his palms and clenched his fists, unable to bear not joining in the fight; he drew out his cudgel and said: 'Master, sit here and don't be afraid.'。」'Let old Sun go and have a bit of fun with him.' The master tried hard to hold him back but could not.He gave a whistle and leapt on ahead. It happened that the monster and Bajie were right in the thick of their fight, evenly matched and unable to disengage.Xingzhe swung up his iron cudgel and aimed a blow at the monster's head; the monster hastily spun around, dodged it in a fluster, and dove straight down into the Flowing Sand River.:「This made Bajie so angry he jumped about wildly, saying: 'Brother, who asked you to come?''The monster was gradually slowing down and finding it hard to block my rake — in no more than three to five more bouts I'd have caught him.'?」:「'He saw how fierce you looked and fled the field in defeat — what good does that do?' Xingzhe laughed and said: 'Brother, to tell you the truth, ever since I subdued the Yellow Wind Monster and came down the mountain, I haven't swung my cudgel for over a month; seeing you fighting him so delightfully, I couldn't resist the itch in my feet, and so I jumped in to have some fun.'。」'Who would have known the monster didn't understand it was just play, and ran off.'

The two of them, hand in hand, talking and laughing, turned back to see Tang Seng.:「?」:「。」:「Tang Seng said: 'Did you manage to catch the monster?' Xingzhe said: 'The monster couldn't hold out in the fight, and fled back down into the water.' Sanzang said: 'Disciples, this monster has lived here a long time, and knows the depths and shallows of the water.'。」:「'With water as boundless as this, and no boat or oar to be had, we really need someone who knows the ways of the water to guide us across.' Xingzhe said: 'That is exactly so.':『。』'As the saying goes: "Near vermilion, one turns red; near ink, one turns black." That monster, living here, must certainly know the nature of the water.'。」:「。」:「'Now if we catch him, let us not kill him outright, but simply make him ferry the master across the river, and settle matters after that.' Bajie said: 'Brother, there's no need to hesitate — let you go first and catch him, while old Zhu keeps watch over the master.' Xingzhe laughed and said: 'Worthy brother, on this one matter I dare not boast — underwater business is not something old Sun is all that familiar with.''If I go down empty-handed, I still have to form a spell-sign with my fingers and recite the water-avoiding spell over and over before I can even move about;''otherwise, I'd have to transform into some kind of fish, shrimp, crab, or turtle before I could go down at all.''As for pitting skills, whatever strange and unusual feats you care to name up in the high mountains or clouds, old Sun can handle them all;'。」:「'it's only underwater dealings that leave me a bit clumsy.' Bajie said: 'In my day, old Zhu was Grand Marshal of the Heavenly River, commanding a host of eighty thousand naval troops, so I did learn something of the ways of the water.'?」:「。」:「。」使'Only I fear that if he has some clan of kin, old and young, seven nests and eight generations of them, all coming at once, I might not be able to handle them — what if I'm suddenly dragged down by them?' Xingzhe said: 'If you go into the water to fight him, don't get drawn into a prolonged battle — you're allowed to lose but not to win; lure him out, and let old Sun step in to help you.' Bajie said: 'Well said, I'll go now.' So saying, he stripped off his blue brocade robe, took off his shoes, and wielding the rake with both hands, parted the watery path; using the old skills of his former days, he leapt through the billows and rolling waves, plunged straight in, went right down to the riverbed, and headed straight forward.

Now to tell of the monster: having retreated in defeat, he had only just caught his breath when he heard someone stirring the water again with a splashing sound. He rose up at once to look, and found it was Bajie, rake in hand, pushing through the water.:「The monster raised his staff and shouted straight at him: 'Monk, where do you think you're going?'。」使:「?」:「'Look out for my blow!' Bajie raised his rake to block it, saying: 'What kind of monster are you, to dare block the way here?' The monster said: 'You truly don't recognize me.'。」:「'I am no demon or fiend, nor am I some nameless nobody of no family.' Bajie said: 'If you're neither demon nor fiend, then why do you take life here?'。」:「'What is your true name — tell me honestly, and I will spare your life.' The monster said: 'I—'

:「Hearing this, Bajie flew into a rage and cursed: 'You wretched creature!''You haven't the least bit of good sense.''Old Zhu here could still squeeze foam out of water — how dare you call me crude and say you'll chop me into fish-paste?''It seems you've mistaken me for some old saltpeter-peddler.'。」使'Don't be so insolent — take this blow from your ancestor's rake!' Seeing the rake come at him, the monster dodged with a move called 'Phoenix Nodding Its Head.'The two of them fought their way up out of the water to the surface, each treading upon the waves and riding the billows. This bout of combat was different from before — behold:

The two of them fought a full two hours without either gaining victory. This was truly a bronze basin meeting an iron broom, a jade chime matched against a golden bell.

Now, the Great Sage, guarding Tang Seng, stood close by, watching eagerly as the two of them contended upon the water, but he could not very well join in.Then he saw Bajie feint a blow with his rake, pretend defeat, and turn to head back toward the eastern bank. The monster came chasing after him, and was nearly at the bank's edge.Xingzhe, unable to restrain himself any longer, left his master, drew his iron cudgel, leapt to the riverside, and struck straight at the monster's head. The monster dared not meet the blow, and with a whoosh dove back into the river.:「Bajie shouted: 'You Protector of the Horses, you truly are an impatient monkey!''If you'd only waited a bit longer, letting me coax him up onto higher ground, while you blocked the riverside so he couldn't turn back — wouldn't we have caught him then?'?」:「'Now that he's gone back in, when will he ever be willing to come out again?' Xingzhe laughed and said: 'Idiot, don't shout, don't shout.'。」'Let's go back and see the master for now.'

So Bajie went together with Xingzhe up onto the high bank, and they saw Sanzang.:「。」:「。」:「?」:「Sanzang rose slightly and said: 'Disciples, you have worked hard.' Bajie said: 'Never mind the hard work — only subduing the monster and getting you across the river would be the fully sound plan.' Sanzang said: 'How did the fight with the monster just now go?' Bajie said: 'That monster's skill is a match for old Zhu.'使'Right in the midst of the fight, I feigned defeat, and only then did he chase up to the bank.'。」:「?」:「'Seeing elder brother raise his cudgel, he ran off.' Sanzang said: 'In that case, what is to be done?' Xingzhe said: 'Master, set your mind at ease, and don't fret.'。」:「。」'Now the sky is growing dark again; let us sit here on this cliff bank for a while, and let old Sun go beg some vegetarian food — you can eat and go to sleep, and we'll deal with matters again tomorrow.' Bajie said: 'Well said — go quickly and come back quickly.'

Xingzhe at once sprang up on a cloud, leapt into the air, and went straight to a household due north, where he begged a bowl of vegetarian food, then returned to offer it to his master.便:「?」:「Seeing him return so quickly, the master said: 'Wukong, should we not go to the household where you begged food, and ask them for some plan to cross the river — wouldn't that be better than contending with this monster?' Xingzhe laughed and said: 'That household is terribly far away, some five to seven thousand li distant — how would they know anything about the ways of this water?'?」:「?」:「'What good would it do to ask them?' Bajie said: 'Brother, now you're spinning tales again — five to seven thousand li, and yet you went and came back so quickly?' Xingzhe said: 'How would you know — old Sun's somersault cloud covers a hundred and eight thousand li in a single leap.'?」:「?」:「'For a distance like five to seven thousand li, I need only nod my head twice and bow my waist once, and there's the round trip — what difficulty is there in that?' Bajie said: 'Brother, if it's really that easy, why not carry the master on your back, just nod your head and bow your waist, and leap across — why bother struggling so hard fighting this monster?' Xingzhe said: 'Can't you ride the clouds yourself?'?」:「'Why not carry the master across yourself?' Bajie said: 'The master's mortal flesh and bones are heavier than Mount Tai — how could my cloud-riding possibly bear the weight?'。」:「'Only your somersault could manage it.' Xingzhe said: 'My somersault is likewise just a form of cloud-riding — it only differs in how far it goes.''If you can't bear him, how could I bear him either?':『。』使'As the ancient saying goes: "One may send Mount Tai flying light as a mustard seed, but to bring a mortal man along, it is hard to escape the red dust of the world." Creatures like these vicious demons and evil monsters, when they use the arts of seizing and conjure up whirlwinds, only drag and pull their victims, moving them along the ground — they cannot carry them off through the air.'使'Old Sun too knows how to perform and work tricks of that kind.''And there's also the art of invisibility, and the art of contracting the earth — old Sun knows every one of them.''But the thing is, the master must pass in person through every strange land, and cannot be spared from the sea of suffering — that is why he cannot advance even a single step by such means.''You and I can only serve as his protectors, keeping his body and life safe — we cannot take his hardships upon ourselves in his place, nor can we fetch the scriptures for him;''even if we had the ability to go ahead and see the Buddha first, the Buddha would not be willing to hand the scriptures over to you or me.' This is exactly what is meant by: "What is gotten too easily is regarded too lightly."' Hearing this, the idiot murmured his assent and took it to heart. Then they ate some plain vegetarian food without any dishes, and master and disciples rested for the night beneath the eastern cliff of the Flowing Sand River.

:「?」:「。」:「。」 The next morning, Sanzang said: 'Wukong, how shall we manage things today?' Xingzhe said: 'There's no other way to manage it — Bajie must go down into the water again.' Bajie said: 'Brother, you just want to keep your own hands clean, and always arrange for me to go into the water.' Xingzhe said: 'Worthy brother, this time I won't be impatient again — just lure him up, and I'll block the riverbank so he can't go back; we must be sure to catch him.'

Splendid Bajie — he wiped his face, roused his spirits, and with the rake in both hands went to the water's edge, parted the watery path, and once again went down to the monster's lair. The monster had just woken from sleep when he suddenly heard the splashing of stirred water; he hastily turned his head and opened his eyes to look, and saw Bajie coming at him, rake in hand.:「。」:「?」:「He leapt out, blocked his path head-on, and shouted: 'Not so fast, not so fast — look out for my staff!' Bajie raised his rake to block it, saying: 'What kind of mourner's staff is that, that you dare tell your ancestor to look out for it?' The monster said: 'You wretch, you understand nothing at all.''This staff of mine—'

:「Bajie laughed and said: 'You wretch who hasn't been beaten enough — never mind about "chopping vegetables," I'm only afraid that one swipe will leave you with nowhere to stick a plaster, and all nine holes bleeding at once.'。」'Even if it doesn't kill you, you'll carry lockjaw to your old age.' The monster abandoned his blocking stance, and down there at the bottom of the water, once again fought his way up to the surface with Bajie. This bout of fighting was indeed even more different from before — behold:

Back and forth in this bout they fought through thirty rounds, with neither showing the stronger.使Bajie again used the trick of feigning defeat, dragging his rake as he fled. The monster came chasing after him again, riding the surge and catching the waves, chasing him right up to the cliffside.:「。」:「Bajie cursed: 'You wretched monster, come on up — here on high ground, with solid footing, we can fight properly.' The monster cursed back: 'You wretch, you're tricking me into coming up so you can call your helper again.'。」沿'You come down, and let's fight in the water instead.' It turned out the monster had grown wary, and would no longer go up onto the bank, only wrangling with Bajie at the water's edge.

Now, seeing that the monster would not come up onto the bank, Xingzhe grew so anxious that his heart burned and his temper flared, and he wished he could seize him with a single grab.:「』。」Xingzhe said: 'Master, sit down by yourself for a moment — let me give him a taste of "the hungry hawk snatching its prey."' With that he sprang up in a somersault, leapt into midair, and swooped down with a whoosh to grab the monster. The monster, right in the midst of his row with Bajie, suddenly heard the wind whistle, hastily turned his head, and saw it was Xingzhe dropping down out of the clouds; at once he drew back his staff, plunged headfirst down into the water, hid every trace of himself, and vanished without a sign.:「?」:「Xingzhe stood still upon the bank and said to Bajie: 'Brother, this monster has grown slippery indeed — he'll never again be willing to come up onto the bank. What's to be done?' Bajie said: 'Hard, hard, hard — I cannot win against him.'使。」:「。」'I even used up every ounce of strength I had since suckling at my mother's breast, and could only manage a draw.' Xingzhe said: 'Let's go see the master for now.'

The two of them again went up to the high bank, saw Tang Seng, and told him in full how hard the monster was to catch.滿:「?」:「The elder, his eyes brimming with tears, said: 'With such difficulty as this, how are we ever to cross?' Xingzhe said: 'Master, do not fret.'。──。」:「?」:「'This monster hides deep at the bottom of the water, and it truly is hard to proceed against him. Bajie, you just stay here and guard the master, and fight him no more; let old Sun go take a trip to the South Sea.' Bajie said: 'Brother, what business have you at the South Sea?' Xingzhe said: 'This whole business of fetching the scriptures was originally arranged by the Bodhisattva Guanyin;''and it was likewise the Bodhisattva Guanyin who freed and delivered each of us.''Today our way is blocked by the Flowing Sand River and we cannot advance — without her, how could this be resolved?'。」:「'Let me go and invite her — that will be far better than fighting this monster.' Bajie said: 'True, true.'。」:「。」'Elder brother, when you go, be sure to convey my greetings for me: I am much obliged for her guidance in days past.' Sanzang said: 'Wukong, if you are going to invite the Bodhisattva, then don't delay — go quickly and return quickly.'

Xingzhe at once sprang onto his somersault cloud and headed straight for the South Sea.Ah!In less than half an hour, he could already see the realm of Mount Putuo in the distance.:「?」:「。」:「。」:「。」In a moment he dropped down from his somersault, and outside the Purple Bamboo Grove he saw the Twenty-Four Devas of the Heavens come forward to greet him, saying: 'Great Sage, whence do you come?' Xingzhe said: 'My master is in difficulty, and I have come especially to seek audience with the Bodhisattva.' The devas said: 'Please be seated, and allow us to announce you.' The deva on duty that day went straight to the mouth of Tidal Sound Cave and announced: 'Sun Wukong has business and seeks audience.' The Bodhisattva was just then at the balustrade by the Jeweled Lotus Pool with the Pearl-Bearing Dragon Girl, admiring the flowers; on hearing the announcement, she at once turned back to her cloud grotto, opened the door, and called him in.The Great Sage, solemn and reverent, paid homage and made his obeisance.

:「?」:「The Bodhisattva asked: 'Why are you not guarding Tang Seng — what matter brings you to see me again?' Xingzhe reported: 'Bodhisattva, earlier at Gao Old Village my master took on another disciple, named Zhu Bajie, upon whom the Bodhisattva was kind enough to also bestow the religious name Wuneng.''We had only just passed over Yellow Wind Ridge, and now have come to the eight-hundred-li Flowing Sand River, which is three thousand li of weak water — already the master finds it hard to cross;''and in the river there is moreover a monster of high and mighty martial skill; thanks greatly to Wuneng, who fought him three great battles upon the water's surface, yet still could not gain the victory, and we remain blocked by him, unable to cross the river.'。」:「滿?」:「'For this reason, I have come especially to report to the Bodhisattva, hoping you will show mercy and help ferry him across.' The Bodhisattva said: 'You monkey, are you again being so full of yourself that you won't speak the words about guarding Tang Seng?' Xingzhe said: 'We only meant to catch him, and make him ferry my master across the river.''Matters underwater, I cannot manage with any finesse.'。」:「'It's only that Wuneng found his lair and exchanged words with him — I suppose he never mentioned the business of fetching the scriptures.' The Bodhisattva said: 'That monster of the Flowing Sand River is none other than the Curtain-Raising General come down to earth, and he too is a faithful believer I converted, whom I bid to protect those fetching the scriptures.'。」:「'If you had only been willing to say you were the ones from the Land of the East fetching scriptures, he certainly would not have contended with you, and would surely have submitted.' Xingzhe said: 'That monster, now afraid to fight, refuses to come up onto the bank, and only lurks hidden in the water — how then can he be made to submit?'?」:「』,"How is my master to cross the Ruoshui?" The Bodhisattva at once summoned Hui'an, drew a red gourd from her sleeve, and instructed him, "Take this gourd, and together with Sun Wukong go to the surface of the Flowing Sand River. Simply call out 'Wujing,' and he will come out."First you must lead him to take refuge with Tang Seng. Then string those nine skulls of his together, arrange them according to the Nine Palaces, and set this gourd in the very center — that will make a Dharma boat able to ferry Tang Seng across the Flowing Sand River."

Having heard this, Hui'an respectfully obeyed his master's command, and together with the Great Sage he carried the gourd out of Chaoyin Cave, and bowing to the Dharma decree took leave of the Purple Bamboo Grove. There is a poem to bear witness.

Before long the two of them lowered their cloud-heads and soon arrived at the bank of the Flowing Sand River.Zhu Bajie recognized this as Muzha the pilgrim, and led his master forward to greet him.Muzha exchanged greetings with Sanzang, and then met with Bajie as well.:「Bajie said, "Earlier, thanks to your guidance, Honored One, I was able to see the Bodhisattva, and I, old Zhu, have indeed obeyed her Dharma teaching — I am glad to say I have now taken Buddhism as my refuge.。」:「。」:「?」:「This while I have been rushing about on the road and have not had time to offer my thanks — forgive me, forgive me." Pilgrim said, "Let's not dwell on old times — let's go call out that fellow." Sanzang said, "Call whom?" Pilgrim said, "Old Sun saw the Bodhisattva and laid out the whole matter before her.The Bodhisattva said that the monster of this Flowing Sand River is the Curtain-Raising General come down from Heaven, who, having committed a crime in Heaven, fell into this river and, losing his true form, turned to making mischief.西He was once persuaded and converted by the Bodhisattva, and is willing to submit to Master and go to the Western Heaven. But we never told him about the matter of fetching the scriptures, and so we have been fighting bitterly.。」:「。」:「?」The Bodhisattva has now sent Muzha with this gourd, to join with this fellow in making a Dharma boat to ferry you across." When Sanzang heard this, he bowed in gratitude without end, and turning to Muzha made a bow, saying, "I earnestly beg the Honored One to set out at once." Muzha, holding the gourd firmly, half in cloud and half in mist, went straight to the surface of the Flowing Sand River and called out in a stern, loud voice, "Wujing, Wujing! The scripture-seeker has been here a long while — why have you still not submitted?"

Now it must be told that the monster, fearing the Monkey King, had returned to the river bottom and was resting in his lair, when he suddenly heard someone call his Dharma name.He knew at once it was Guanyin the Bodhisattva;」:and hearing further that "the scripture-seeker is here," he no longer feared the axe and halberd, but hastily parted the waves and stretched out his head — and then recognized Muzha the pilgrim as well.:「Just watch him — beaming with smiles, he came forward and made a bow, saying, "Honored One, forgive me for failing to welcome you properly.?」:「Where is the Bodhisattva now?" Muzha said, "My master has not come herself; she sent me ahead first to instruct you to quickly follow Tang Seng and become his disciple.。」:「?」:「?」:「?」:「。」:「You are to take the skulls hanging at your neck, together with this gourd, and arrange them according to the Nine Palaces to form a Dharma boat, to ferry him across this Ruoshui." Wujing said, "But where is the scripture-seeker?" Muzha pointed with his hand, saying, "Is that not him sitting on the eastern bank?" Wujing looked and saw Bajie, and said, "I didn't know where that reckless creature came from — he's fought me a full two days straight, and never once mentioned a word about fetching scriptures!" Then he saw Pilgrim too, and said, "And that fellow is his helper — fierce as anything. I'm not going." Muzha said, "That is Zhu Bajie, and this is Sun Pilgrim — both are Tang Seng's disciples, both converted and persuaded by the Bodhisattva. Why be afraid of them?。」Let me go with you now to see Tang Seng."

:「。」:「Only then did Wujing put away his treasured staff, straighten out his yellow brocade robe, and leap up onto the bank, where he knelt on both knees before Tang Seng, saying, "Master, your disciple had eyes but no pupils, and failed to recognize your honored countenance, giving much offense — I beg you earnestly to forgive my crime." Bajie said, "You pus-bag, why didn't you submit earlier instead of insisting on fighting me??」:「。」:「?」:「?」:「,」:「。」What kind of talk is that?" Pilgrim said with a laugh, "Brother, don't blame him — it's only that we never told him about the matter of fetching scriptures, nor our names." The elder said, "Are you truly willing to sincerely take refuge in my faith?" Wujing said, "Your disciple was earlier converted and taught by the Bodhisattva, who took Sand as my surname and gave me a Dharma name, calling me Sha Wujing — how could I fail to follow my master?" Sanzang said, "Since that is so," and called out, "Wukong, fetch the razor and shave his head for him." The Great Sage did as told, and at once took the razor and shaved his head.He then came forward again and bowed to Sanzang, and bowed to Pilgrim and Bajie, taking his place according to seniority.Seeing that his manner of bowing truly resembled that of a monk's household, Sanzang therefore also called him Sha Monk.:「。」Muzha said, "Since you have now taken up the discipline, there is no need for further talk — let us hurry and make the Dharma boat."

Wujing dared not delay, and at once took down the skulls hanging from his neck, bound them with cord into the Nine Palaces formation, set the Bodhisattva's gourd in the very center, and invited his master down to the shore. The elder then boarded the Dharma boat and sat upon it, and indeed it was as steady as a light skiff. On the left Bajie supported him, on the right Wujing held it up;Sun Pilgrim followed behind leading the dragon horse, half in cloud and half in mist;and directly overhead Muzha gave his protective escort. The master thus floated smoothly and steadily across the border of the Flowing Sand River, the waves calm and the wind still as he crossed the Ruoshui.Truly it was as if flying, as swift as an arrow — before long he had set foot on the far shore, delivered from the vast waves;and without so much as trailing mud or water, happily his feet and hands remained dry, pure and free of striving, as master and disciples set their feet on solid ground.Muzha then lowered the auspicious clouds and took back the gourd. And then they saw the skulls at once dissolve into nine wisps of dark wind, and vanish silently from sight.Sanzang bowed his thanks to Muzha, and made reverent obeisance to the Bodhisattva. It is just as the verse says:

In the end, it is not yet known when they will attain the true fruit and succeed in fetching the scriptures — listen to the next chapter for the explanation.

What it’s about

At the Flowing-Sands River, eight hundred li of water too weak to float a feather, a fierce cannibal monster rises to fight Bajie among the waves. Neither can win in the other's element, and Wukong cannot swim well enough to help, so the pilgrims are stranded on the near bank with no way across the deadly current.

Wukong flies to Guanyin, who sends her disciple Moksha down to call the monster by name. He is Sha Wujing, a disgraced marshal of Heaven doing penance here, and the string of skulls at his throat is all that is left of earlier pilgrims. He becomes the third disciple, and the skulls and a gourd form the boat that at last carries the party over the water.

When it was written 背景

This 回 completes the band of pilgrims, the last of the three disciples to join, and repeats the pattern set at the Eagle-Grief Stream and Gao Village: a monster is really a fallen immortal whom Guanyin has been holding in reserve for exactly this errand. Learners should note that the combat here is a stalemate by design and that the answer is recruitment rather than victory; the skull-boat is a vivid, memorable image of penance turned to use.
