The Vihara-Guardian Bodhisattva Helps Defeat the Yellow Wind Demon

021Chapter 21

:「。」Now it is told that the fifty defeated little demons, carrying their broken flags and broken drums, rushed into the cave and reported: "Great King, Vanguard Tiger could not defeat that hairy-faced monk, and was chased down the eastern mountain slope by him." When the old demon heard this, he was greatly troubled.:「。」:「He was just bowing his head in silence, pondering a strategy, when another little demon guarding the front gate said: "Great King, Vanguard Tiger was beaten to death by that hairy-faced monk, who is dragging him at the gate and cursing us to battle." When the old demon heard this, he grew even more troubled and said: "This fellow is indeed ignorant.I have not even eaten his master yet, and he goes and kills my vanguard commander — how hateful!!」:「How hateful!" He called out: "Bring my armor.。」I have only heard talk of some Sun Xingzhe — let me go out and see just what kind of nine-headed, eight-tailed monk he is, seize him and bring him in to pay with his life for my Vanguard Tiger." The little demons hurriedly brought out the armor. The old demon dressed himself neatly, grasped a three-pronged steel fork, and led his troop of demons leaping out of the cave.

The Great Sage stood waiting outside the gate, and when he saw the demon come striding out, he saw indeed that he was fierce and valiant.Look at how he was dressed — behold:

:「?」:「When the old demon came out the gate, he cried out sharply: "Which one is Sun Xingzhe?" Xingzhe, treading in the tiger demon's hide, gripping his compliant iron rod, replied: "Your grandfather Sun is right here.。」滿Send my master out." The demon looked closely and saw that Xingzhe's body was scrawny and mean, his face lean and haggard, not even four feet tall.:「He laughed: "Pitiful, pitiful.。」:「I thought you'd be some unbeatable hero, impossible to knock down — but you turn out to be nothing but a sickly skeleton of a ghost." Xingzhe laughed: "You young whelp, you've got no eye for quality at all.。」:「。」Though your grandfather is small, if you'll strike me square on the head with your fork handle, I'll grow three feet taller." The demon said: "Steel your head then, and take a blow from me." The Great Sage stood there utterly unafraid. The demon did indeed strike a blow.Xingzhe bent at the waist just a little, and grew three feet taller, coming to about a full zhang in length.:「使The startled demon held back his steel fork and shouted: "Sun Xingzhe, how dare you use that body-guarding transformation trick of yours here at my gate?。」:「:『。』。」Stop playing tricks and come up here — let me see your real skill." Xingzhe laughed: "My boy, as the saying goes: 'Show mercy and withhold your hand; once you raise your hand, show no mercy.' Your grandfather's hand is a heavy one — I fear you won't be able to bear this blow." The demon, giving him no chance to finish, twisted his steel fork and thrust straight at Xingzhe's chest;使」,便but this Great Sage was one who, being skilled, was never flustered, and being flustered, was never truly skilled; he swept his iron rod around in a stance called "Black Dragon Sweeps the Ground," knocked the steel fork aside, and again struck straight at the head. The two of them fought a fine battle there at the mouth of Yellow Wind Cave:

The old demon and the Great Sage fought thirty rounds without either winning or losing.使:「!」Xingzhe, wanting to show real results, used his "body outside the body" technique: he plucked out a handful of his hairs, chewed them to bits in his mouth, spat them upward, and shouted "Change!" They changed into a hundred or so Xingzhes, all dressed alike, each gripping an iron rod, surrounding the demon in midair.使The demon grew afraid and used a trick of his own: he quickly turned his head toward the southeast, opened his mouth three times, and blew out a breath with a great "hu" — and suddenly a gust of yellow wind rose up from the empty air. What a wind — truly fearsome:

The demon let loose this gale of wild wind, and it blew the little Xingzhes transformed from the Great Sage's hairs whirling about in midair like spinning wheels, so that they could not wield their rods, much less get near his body.In alarm, Xingzhe shook his hairs and drew them back onto his body.Alone now, he raised his iron rod and pressed forward to strike. But again the demon blew a mouthful of yellow wind straight into his face, and it blew his two fiery golden eyes tight shut, so that he could not open them at all.使Because of this he could no longer wield his iron rod, and so he was beaten and fled the field. The demon called back his wind and returned to the cave — no more of that for now.

Now it is told that Zhu Bajie, seeing the great yellow wind rise up so that heaven and earth lost their light, led the horse and guarded the load, crouching in a mountain hollow, not daring even to open his eyes or raise his head, his mouth ceaselessly chanting the Buddha's name and making vows;and he had no idea whether Xingzhe had won or lost, or whether his master was alive or dead.Just as he was caught in this anxious doubt, the wind suddenly died down and the sky cleared. He suddenly raised his head to look toward the cave gate, but saw no sign of weapons or troops, and heard no gongs or drums.退The idiot dared not approach the demon's gate, yet there was no one to watch the horse and the baggage either — truly caught between advancing and retreating, he was thrown into utter distress.西:「While he was worrying, he suddenly heard the Great Sage come shouting from the west, and he hurried forward to greet him, saying: "Elder Brother, what a mighty wind that was!?」:「Where have you come from?" Xingzhe waved his hand and said: "Fierce, fierce indeed! In all my life as a person, I have never seen such a wind.使That old demon wielded a three-pronged steel fork and came to fight old Sun.使We fought over thirty rounds, and then old Sun used his 'body outside the body' technique.I surrounded him and beat at him, and he grew so anxious that he conjured up this gust of wind.。──It truly was vicious — it blew me right off my feet, so I withdrew my technique and fled before the wind. — Hmph, what a wind!Hmph, what a wind!。」:「?」:「Old Sun himself can summon wind and call rain, but I've never seen a wind as wicked as this demon's." Bajie said: "Elder Brother, how is that demon's martial skill?" Xingzhe said: "Passable enough — his fork technique is quite disciplined, and he fought old Sun to a draw.。」:「?」:「It's only that his wind is so vicious, it's hard to beat him." Bajie said: "If that's how it is, how can we ever save our master?" Xingzhe said: "Saving our master can wait a little longer.。」:「?」:「。」 :「。」I wonder if there's an eye doctor around here — have him treat my eyes a bit." Bajie said: "What happened to your eyes?" Xingzhe said: "That demon blew a mouthful of wind straight at me, and it made my eyeballs ache and sting — even now cold tears keep streaming out." Bajie said: "Ah, brother, we're halfway up a mountain and it's already getting dark — forget about finding an eye doctor, we don't even have a place to spend the night." Xingzhe said: "Finding a place to stay won't be hard. I reckon that demon still won't dare harm our master — let's find the main road, look for some household to put us up, pass this one night there, and tomorrow at daybreak we'll come back to subdue the demon." Bajie said: "Right, right."

So he led the horse and carried the load, went out of the mountain hollow, and made his way up to the road.By now dusk was gradually falling, and they heard the sound of dogs barking from a mountain slope south of the road. The two of them stopped to look, and saw it was a farmstead, with lamplight glimmering faintly. The two of them, whether there was a path or not, pushed through the grass straight to the gate of that house.Behold:

:「!」:「The two of them did not dare enter without leave, and could only call out: "Open up, open up!" There was an old man there, who, with several young farmhands bearing forks and brooms, all came out together and asked: "Who is it??」:「Who is it?" Xingzhe bowed and said: "We are disciples of the sage monk of Tang from the Land of the East.西On our way west to worship the Buddha and seek the scriptures, we passed by this mountain, and the Great King of Yellow Wind seized my master — we have not yet managed to save him. :「The sky has grown dark, so we have come especially to beg lodging at your estate for one night — we beg you to grant us this convenience." The old man returned the bow, saying: "Forgive my poor welcome, forgive my poor welcome. This is a place of many clouds and few people, and just now, hearing someone calling at the gate, I feared it might be some demon fox, old tiger, or mountain bandit of that sort — hence my foolish household acted rashly and gave offense. I did not know it was you two elder monks.。」Please come in, please come in."

The two brothers led the horse and carried the load inside, went straight to the inner rooms, tied up the horse and set down the load, and exchanged bows and sat down with the old master of the house.A servant then brought out tea. When the tea was finished, several bowls of sesame rice were brought out. After the meal, he ordered bedding set out for them to sleep.:「?」:「?」:「。」:「?」:「。」:「Xingzhe said: "Sleep can wait — may I ask, good sir, is there anyone hereabouts who sells eye medicine?" The old man said: "Which of you elder masters is suffering from eye trouble?" Xingzhe said: "I won't hide it from you, old sir — we monks who have left the household never fall ill, and have never known what it is to suffer eye trouble." The old man said: "If you don't have eye trouble, why ask for medicine?" Xingzhe said: "Today at the mouth of Yellow Wind Cave, we were trying to save my master, and unexpectedly that demon blew a mouthful of wind at me, and it made my eyeballs ache and sting, and now they are full of welling tears — that's why I want to find some eye medicine." The old man said: "Merciful heavens, merciful heavens! You, an elder monk still young in years — how can you tell such a lie? That Great King of Yellow Wind has the most vicious wind there is.西。……」:「?」:「His wind cannot be compared to any spring wind or autumn wind, pine wind or bamboo wind, or wind from any of the four directions. ..." Bajie said: "It must be a sinus wind, then, or an ear-wind, leprosy wind, or a facial-paralysis wind?" The elder said: "No, no.。」:「?」:「It is called the Wind of Samadhi." Xingzhe said: "How so?" The old man said: "That wind can blow heaven and earth dark, can make ghosts and spirits grieve with its fierceness, can split stone and crack cliffs with its violence, and can blow out a person's life in an instant. If you had been caught in that wind of his, do you think you would still be alive to think about it?。」:「Only an immortal could escape unharmed." Xingzhe said: "Indeed, indeed.Though we are not immortals ourselves, immortals are but our juniors.。」:「This life of mine is not so easily ended — it's only that it blew my eyeballs sore and aching." The old man said: "If that's so, then you must indeed be someone of considerable background. In this poor place of ours, though, there is no one who sells eye medicine.。」:「。」This old man himself suffers a bit from cold tears when facing the wind, and I once met an extraordinary person who passed on to me a formula called Three-Flower Nine-Seed Paste, which can cure any kind of wind-caused eye ailment." When Xingzhe heard this, he bowed his head and said with a respectful greeting: "I beg you for a little, to try applying it." The old man agreed, and went inside at once, brought out a small agate jar, pulled out the stopper, dipped out a little with a jade hairpin, and applied it to Xingzhe's eyes, telling him not to open them, but to rest his mind and sleep, and by morning he would be well.退When the application was done, he put away the stone jar, and led the young servants back inside.

Bajie undid the bundle, spread out the bedding, and asked Xingzhe to settle down.Xingzhe, his eyes shut tight, groped about blindly.:「?」:「。」Bajie laughed and said: "Master, where's your walking cane?" Xingzhe said: "You gluttonous fool, you're treating me like a blind man." The idiot chuckled silently to himself and went to sleep.Xingzhe sat on the bedding, circulating his inner powers, and did not lie down to sleep until after the third watch.

Before he knew it, the fifth watch was approaching dawn.:「。」Xingzhe wiped his face, opened his eyes, and said: "What excellent medicine indeed — a hundred times brighter than usual." Then he turned to look behind him, and — ah!There was no house, no windows or doors to be seen at all — only old locust trees and tall willows, and the two brothers were lying there on a patch of green grass.:「?」:「。」:「?」:「?」「?」:「?」:「Bajie woke up and said: "Elder Brother, what are you shouting about?" Xingzhe said: "Open your eyes and take a look." The idiot suddenly raised his head, and seeing no house at all, scrambled up in a fright, saying: "Where's my horse?" Xingzhe said: "Isn't that it tied to the tree?" "And the baggage?" Xingzhe said: "Isn't that it lying by your head?" Bajie said: "That family was quite inconsiderate too — if they were moving house, why didn't they even tell us?If they'd let old Zhu know, I could at least have seen them off with some tea and fruit.。──I suppose they were hiding from some official business, afraid the village headman would find out, and so moved away in the middle of the night. — Hmph!?」:「We must have slept awfully soundly, that we didn't hear a sound while they were tearing down the house." Xingzhe chuckled and said: "Idiot, don't carry on so.?」Look — what's that paper notice up on that tree?" Bajie stepped forward, reached up and tore it down — and there, written on it, were four lines of verse, saying:

:「。」:「?」:「Xingzhe said: "These bunch of guardian spirits — ever since we exchanged the dragon horse, I haven't once called on them for duty, and now they've come to play this trick on us instead." Bajie said: "Elder Brother, don't put on airs — why would they submit to your commands?" Xingzhe said: "Brother, you still don't know. These Guardians of the Faith, the Six Dings and Six Jias, the Five Direction Sentinels, and the Four Duty Officers, all act on the Bodhisattva's decree, secretly protecting our master.。」:「Ever since the day they reported for duty, it's only because you've been with us all along that I've never had need to call on them, and so I never gave them any assignment." Bajie said: "Elder Brother, since they're under the Bodhisattva's decree to secretly protect our master, they cannot show themselves openly, and that's why they conjured up this immortal manor for us.Don't blame them — after all, yesterday it was thanks to them that your eyes were treated, and thanks to them, too, that we got a full vegetarian meal — you could say they've done their utmost.。」:「Don't blame them — let's go and save our master instead." Xingzhe said: "Brother, well said. This place is not far from the mouth of Yellow Wind Cave. You stay put for now — just wait in the woods watching the horse and the load.。」:「Let old Sun go into the cave to find out how things stand, see what has become of our master, and then fight the demon again." Bajie said: "That's right — get a clear answer on whether he's alive or dead.If our master is already dead, then each of us can go our own way and make other plans;。」:「。」but if he's still alive, then we'll do our utmost to save him." Xingzhe said: "Don't talk such nonsense — I'm off."

He gave his body a leap and went straight to the demon's gate, which was still shut, everyone inside asleep.Xingzhe did not call at the gate, not wanting to alarm the demon just yet; instead he formed a hand-sign, recited a spell, gave his body a shake, and transformed into a spotted-legged mosquito — small and dainty indeed. There is a poem to prove it.The poem says:

:「He saw the little demon guarding the gate fast asleep and snoring; Xingzhe flew up and bit him once on the face. The little demon rolled over, woke up, and said: "Oh my!。」:「。」What a huge mosquito — one bite and it's raised a great welt." Then he suddenly opened his eyes and said: "It's dawn." And just then he heard a creak, and the inner gate opened.:「。」Xingzhe buzzed his way inside, and saw the old demon giving orders that every gate be carefully guarded, while on one side he had his troops preparing weapons: "I'm afraid yesterday's wind didn't manage to blow Sun Xingzhe to death — he's bound to come again today, and when he does, we'll make certain his life ends here."

Hearing this, Xingzhe flew on past the main hall and went straight to the rear, where he found an inner gate shut very tight.Xingzhe squeezed in through a crack in the door, and found it was a large, empty garden, where, against the far wall, at a wind-anchoring post, Tang Seng was bound tight with ropes. The master's tears were falling one after another, his heart thinking only of Wukong and Wuneng, not knowing where either of them was.:「。」:「Xingzhe alighted, resting on the master's bald head, and called out: "Master." The elder recognized his voice and said: "Wukong, this has nearly worried me to death.?」:「Where are you, calling to me?" Xingzhe said: "Master, I'm right here on your head.Don't let your heart burn with worry — don't trouble yourself so.。」:「?」:「We must be sure to capture the demon before we can save your life." Tang Seng said: "Disciple, when will you ever manage to catch the demon?" Xingzhe said: "That tiger demon of yours has already been beaten to death by Bajie. It's only the old demon's wind that is so fierce — but I reckon it will be settled this very day, and we'll be sure to catch him.。」Set your heart at ease and stop weeping — I'm off now."

With that he buzzed his way back to the front. There he saw the old demon sitting up above, in the midst of assigning duties to his various commanders.:「Then he saw a little demon from before the cave, rubbing at a command-flag, come rushing into the hall to report: "Great King, while I was out patrolling the mountain, I saw a monk with a long snout and big ears sitting in the woods — if I hadn't run fast, I'd nearly have been caught by him.。」:「But I didn't see that hairy-faced monk from yesterday." The old demon said: "If Sun Xingzhe is not there, he must have been blown to death by the wind;便。」:「otherwise he wouldn't have gone off to beg for reinforcements." The demons said: "Great King, if he really was blown to death, that's our good fortune;?」:「but if we only fear he wasn't killed, and he's gone to fetch some divine soldiers, what shall we do then?" The old demon said: "What divine soldiers are there to fear??」The only one who could ever settle this wind of mine is the Bodhisattva Lingji — anyone else, why should I fear them?"

Xingzhe, up on the roof beam, hearing just this one remark, was overjoyed beyond measure.:「。」:「He at once slipped away, flew outside, resumed his true form, and came to the woods, calling out: "Brother." Bajie said: "Brother, where have you been?。」:「Just now a demon carrying a command-flag came by, and I chased him off." Xingzhe laughed: "Well done, well done.Old Sun turned himself into a tiny mosquito and slipped into the demon's cave to look in on Master — it turned out Master was bound to the wind-stilling stake, weeping. It was I who told him not to weep. Then I flew up onto the roof beam and listened for a while, and saw the one carrying the command flag come hurrying in, panting, to report: 'He was only driving you off — he never even saw me.'The old demon guessed wildly and talked all sorts of nonsense, saying at one moment that Old Sun had been blown to death by the wind, and at another that he had gone off to fetch heavenly troops.。」:「?」:「。──?」"But he let slip a name of his own accord — excellent, excellent!" Bajie said, "Whom did he name?" Wukong said, "He said, why fear any heavenly troops — the only one who could still his wind would be Bodhisattva Lingji, if he came. Only I don't know where Lingji lives."

Just as they were discussing this, an old man came walking out from beside the main road.Just look at what manner of man he was:

:「:『。』?」:「。」:「Seeing him, Bajie was overjoyed and said, "Elder brother, as the saying goes: 'To know the road at the foot of the mountain, you must ask someone who has traveled it.' Why not step up and ask him?" Sure enough, the Great Sage tucked away his iron rod, smoothed down the front of his robe, stepped forward, and called out, "Old sir, greetings." The old man returned the courtesy half-heartedly and said, "What monk are you, and from where??」:「What business have you out here in this wilderness?" Wukong said, "We are holy monks on our way to fetch the scriptures.?」:「Yesterday we lost our master near here, and I've come specially to ask you, sir: where does Bodhisattva Lingji live?" The old man said, "Lingji lives due south of here; it is still three thousand li to get there. There is a mountain called Little Sumeru, and on it stands a place of practice, the lecture hall and meditation cloister of the Bodhisattva.?」:「。」:「。」Are you two going there to fetch his scriptures?" Wukong said, "Not to fetch his scriptures — I have a matter that requires his help, but I don't know which road leads there." The old man pointed south with his hand and said, "This sheep-gut path is the one." This tricked the Great Sage Sun into turning his head to look at the road, and the old man turned into a clear breeze and vanished without a trace.Only a slip of paper was left behind by the road, on which was written a verse of four lines, saying:

Wukong took up the note, turned around, and set off down the road.:「Bajie said, "Brother, our luck has been running low these past few days — these two days we've been seeing ghosts in broad daylight.?」:「?」:「西。」:「。」:「Who was that old fellow who turned into wind and vanished?" Wukong handed the note to Bajie, who read it through once and said, "Who is this 'Li Changgeng'?" Wukong said, "That is the title of the Great White Planet Venus of the West." Startled, Bajie bowed toward the sky and said, "Benefactor, benefactor! If old Zhu had not had Lord Venus memorialize the Jade Emperor on my behalf, who knows what would have become of my life." Wukong said, "Brother, so you do know how to be grateful. But don't show yourself — just hide deep in this stretch of forest, and watch carefully over the luggage and the horse.。」:「Wait while old Sun goes to find Mount Sumeru and invite the Bodhisattva." Bajie said, "Understood, understood. Just you hurry on ahead.。」Old Zhu has learned the turtle's trick — when it's time to pull your head in, pull your head in."

The Great Sage Sun leapt into the air, mounted his cloud somersault, and went straight due south. Truly swift he was — with a nod of his head he covered three thousand li, and with a twist of his waist, more than eight hundred li further. In a moment, he saw a tall mountain, and halfway up it auspicious clouds appeared, with lucky mists swirling thick. In a hollow of the mountain there indeed stood a meditation cloister; he could hear bells and chimes ringing out melodiously, and saw incense smoke drifting faintly. The Great Sage went straight to the gate, where he saw a Taoist attendant with a string of prayer beads around his neck, chanting the Buddha's name.:「。」:「?」:「?」:「?」:「。」:「。」:「。」Wukong said, "Greetings, attendant." The attendant bowed in return and said, "Where does the honored guest come from?" Wukong said, "Is this the place where Bodhisattva Lingji lectures on the sutras?" The attendant said, "This is indeed the place. What did you wish to say?" Wukong said, "May I trouble you, sir, to pass on a message for me: I am Sun Wukong the Pilgrim, the Great Sage Equal to Heaven, disciple of Tripitaka, the imperial brother-monk under the Tang court of the Land of the East. I have a matter now and wish to see the Bodhisattva." The attendant laughed and said, "Sir, that's a great many words and titles — I can't remember it all." Wukong said, "Just say that Tang Priest's disciple Sun Wukong has come."

The attendant did as told and went up to the lecture hall to report.穿The Bodhisattva at once put on his cassock, lit fresh incense, and came out to receive him.Only then did the Great Sage step through the gate; looking inside, he saw:

The Bodhisattva straightened his robes and came out to welcome him; Wukong entered the hall and took the guest's seat, whereupon tea was ordered brought.:「。」:「Wukong said, "Please don't trouble to serve tea — my master is in danger on Yellow Wind Mountain, and I have come specially to ask the Bodhisattva to exert his great magic power to subdue the demon and save my master." The Bodhisattva said, "I received the Tathagata's decree to remain here and keep the Yellow Wind Demon suppressed. The Tathagata bestowed on me a Wind-Stilling Elixir and a Flying Dragon Precious Staff. At that time I caught him, but spared his life and let him go back into hiding on the mountain, forbidding him to take life or commit further sins.。」I did not know that he would try to harm your master today, defying my command — that is my fault." The Bodhisattva wished to keep Wukong there and prepare a vegetarian meal so they could talk further, but Wukong earnestly declined; he then took up the Flying Dragon Staff, and together with the Great Sage mounted the clouds.

Before long, they reached Yellow Wind Mountain.:「。」The Bodhisattva said, "Great Sage, this demon is somewhat afraid of me. I will stay fixed here up among the clouds; you go down and challenge him to battle, and lure him out, so that I may use my power." Wukong did as he said, brought his cloud down, and without waiting to explain, drew his iron rod and smashed open the demon's cave gate.:「!」He shouted, "Monster, give me back my master!" In alarm, the little demon guarding the gate hurried in to report.:「The demon said, "This wretched ape is truly insolent — still won't take the hint, and has gone and smashed my gate.使。」This time when I go out, I'll raise a divine wind and be sure to blow him dead." As before he donned his armor, snatched up his steel trident, and strode out of the gate once more.Seeing Wukong, without a word he twirled his trident and thrust straight for his chest;the Great Sage turned his body aside and dodged it.He raised his rod and fought back, and they had traded no more than a few bouts when the demon spun his head around toward the southeast, and was just about to open his mouth to summon the wind, when suddenly, up in midair, Bodhisattva Lingji flung down the Flying Dragon Precious Staff. No one knew what spell he recited, but it turned into an eight-clawed golden dragon, which with a swoosh spread its two claws, seized the demon in one grip, lifted him by the head, and dashed him two or three times against the rocky cliffside — whereupon he reverted to his true form: a yellow-furred marten.

:「。」:「Wukong rushed up and raised his rod to strike, but the Bodhisattva stopped him, saying, "Great Sage, do not take his life — I still need to bring him before the Tathagata." He then said to Wukong, "He was originally a rat who had attained the Way at the foot of Spirit Mountain. Because he stole the clear oil from the glazed lamp, dimming its flame, and feared the Vajra guardians would seize him, he fled and came to this place, where he turned into a spirit and worked evil. The Tathagata, seeing him with his all-perceiving eye, judged that his offense did not merit death, and so had me keep him under guard here; but now that he has taken life and committed sins, he must be brought up to Spirit Mountain.。」Now he has once again offended the Great Sage and brought harm to Tang Priest — I will take him to see the Tathagata and have his crime clearly judged; only then will this affair truly count as accomplished." Hearing this, Wukong thanked the Bodhisattva.西The Bodhisattva returned west; no more of that for now.

Now to tell of Zhu Bajie: he was in the forest, anxiously thinking of Wukong, when he suddenly heard a shout from the foot of the slope: "Brother Wuneng, bring the horse and shoulder the load, come out!" The fool recognized it as Wukong's voice, hastily gathered his things, and ran out of the forest. Seeing Wukong, he said, "Brother, how did things go?" Wukong said, "I invited Bodhisattva Lingji, who used a Flying Dragon Staff to seize the demon — it turned out to be a yellow-furred marten spirit, and he has taken it off to Spirit Mountain to see the Tathagata.。」Now let's you and I go into the cave and rescue our master." Only then did the fool turn joyful.

The two of them charged inside, and with rake and iron rod made a clean sweep, killing off the whole den of cunning hares, demon foxes, musk deer, and antlered deer, then went to the back garden to bow before Master and free him.:「Master came out through the doorway and asked, "How did the two of you manage to catch the demon??」How did you finally manage to save me?" Wukong recounted the whole affair of inviting Lingji to subdue the demon.Master thanked them over and over without end.西The brothers took some of the vegetarian stores from the cave, prepared themselves a meal and ate, and only then set out through the gate, found the main road, and headed west.

What happened after this is not yet known; listen to the explanation given in the next chapter.

What it’s about

The Protectors of the Faith conjure a farmstead so the exhausted pilgrims can rest, and Wukong resumes the siege of the Yellow Wind cave. The monster's blinding gale has injured his eyes, so he retreats to be healed by an old man and learns that the wind can only be stilled by Lingji Bodhisattva, who dwells on Sumeru Mountain to the south.

Wukong flies to fetch Lingji, whose Wind-Stilling Pearl and flying-dragon staff pin the demon where the iron cudgel could not. The Yellow Wind King is exposed as a marten that had stolen oil from a lamp at the Buddha's own Vulture Peak and fled to earth to play at being a king. Tripitaka is freed, the cave's captives are released, and the westward road opens again.

When it was written 背景

This 回 closes the abduction begun in the previous chapter and teaches the novel's standard rescue formula: a monster with one unbeatable trick is beaten not by force but by fetching the single celestial official who governs it. Learners should track Wukong's eye injury, the healing interlude and Lingji's two named treasures; the marten's back-story quietly ties an earthly menace to a lapse inside the Buddha's own household.
