The Pilgrims Receive the Heart Sutra and Face the Yellow Wind Demon

020Chapter 20

》,This gatha is the one by which Master Xuanzang came to thorough enlightenment through the Heart Sutra, and threw open its gate; that elder ever recited it, ever held it in mind, and its point of spiritual light shone through of itself.

Now to tell of the three of them on the road, dining on wind and lodging by water, wearing the moon and cloaked in stars — before long they came again to the blazing days of summer.Behold:

That day, as they were traveling, heaven suddenly darkened, and they saw beside the mountain road a village dwelling.:「西Sanzang said, "Wukong, look — the setting sun hides its fire-mirror behind the western hills, and the rising moon shows its ice-wheel over the eastern sea. :「。」:「。」:「Fortunately there is a household by the road; let us borrow lodging there for the night and go on again tomorrow." Bajie said, "Well said. This old hog is a bit hungry too — let's go to that house and beg some food, so we'll have strength to carry the luggage." Xingzhe said, "You homesick devil — you've been away from home only a few days and already you're complaining." Bajie said, "Brother, you can't be compared to one who feeds on wind and mist.?」:「。」:「Ever since I followed the master these past days, I've had to endure a half-empty belly most of the time — did you know that?" Sanzang, hearing this, said, "Wuneng, if your heart is so set on home, you are no monk at all — you might as well go back." The fool was so alarmed he fell to his knees, saying, "Master, don't listen to my elder brother's words — he likes to slander people.I never complained of anything; he just says I did.I'm a simple, straightforward fellow — I said my belly was hungry and it would be good to find a household to beg a meal from, and he scolds me for being a homesick devil.西退Master, I received the Bodhisattva's precepts, and moreover have received the master's compassion; I am willing to serve the master all the way to the Western Heaven, and I swear never to retreat or regret it.』。This is called 'enduring hardship in cultivation.'?」:「。」How can you say I'm no monk?" Sanzang said, "Since that is so, you may rise."

The fool sprang up, muttering and grumbling under his breath, shouldered the carrying-pole, and, resigned to it, followed along.Soon they reached the gate of the household beside the road.Sanzang dismounted, Xingzhe took the reins, and Bajie set down the luggage; all three stood waiting beneath the green shade.Sanzang, leaning on his nine-ringed monk's staff, straightened his rattan-and-bamboo-woven cloak-hat and went first toward the gate. There he saw an old man reclining sideways on a bamboo couch, his mouth murmuring the name of Buddha.:「。」:「Sanzang, not daring to speak loudly, called out slowly, "Benefactor, I greet you." The old man leapt up with a start, hastily straightened his robe, and came out to return the greeting, saying, "Elder, forgive my failure to welcome you properly. From what place have you come??」:「Why have you come to my humble gate?" Sanzang said, "This poor monk is a monk of Tang in the Land of the East, and by imperial decree am going to Thunderclap Monastery to worship the Buddha and seek the scriptures. :「西Having just reached this honored place as evening fell, I intend to trouble your worthy household for a night's lodging — I earnestly beg you to grant this favor." The old man waved his hand and shook his head, saying, "You cannot go — it is hard to fetch scriptures from the Western Heaven.。」:「西If you want scriptures, go east instead." Sanzang said nothing aloud, but pondered inwardly: "The Bodhisattva pointed the way west — why does this old man tell me to go east??」How could there be scriptures in the east?" Too abashed to speak, he was silent for a long while and gave no answer.

:「Now Xingzhe, being by nature fierce and unruly, could not restrain himself, and stepped forward crying loudly, "Old man, you're of such great age and yet you understand nothing at all.宿We monks have come from afar to borrow lodging, and you frighten us with such tiresome, dull talk.。」:「?」:「If your house is truly too cramped and there's no place for us to sleep, we'll just sit under the trees for the night — we won't trouble you." The old man grabbed hold of Sanzang and said, "Master, you yourself say nothing, yet that disciple of yours, with that twisted, jutting jaw and cheekbones, that thunder-god mouth, those red eyes — a consumptive devil if ever there was one — how dare he affront an old man like me?" Xingzhe laughed and said, "Old man, you really have no eye for people. Those who look handsome and refined are what's called 'pleasing to look at but no good to eat.'。」:「。」:「。」:「Consider old Sun here — though small, I'm quite solid, all muscle wrapped in skin." The old man said, "You must have some skill then." Xingzhe said, "I dare not boast, but I can just about hold my own." The old man said, "Where is your home??」:「And for what reason did you shave your head to become a monk?" Xingzhe said, "Old Sun's ancestral home is at the Water Curtain Cave on the Mountain of Flowers and Fruit, in the country of Aolai, east of the sea, in the Continent of Yunge that Excels All the East. From childhood I studied to become a demon, and took the name Wukong.Through my own abilities I became the Great Sage Equal to Heaven. But because I would not accept a post in Heaven's registry, I greatly rebelled against the Heavenly Palace, and brought a great calamity upon myself. Now, having escaped that hardship and dissolved that calamity, I have turned to the gate of Buddhism, seeking the true fruit ahead.西I am escorting my master here, under the court of the Tang dynasty, on his journey to the Western Heaven to worship the Buddha — what do I care for high mountains and perilous roads, for broad waters and raging waves?Old Sun here can also catch demons and subdue fiends, tame tigers and capture dragons, kick over Heaven and stir up wells — I know a fair bit of all that.便。」So if your household has anything like bricks flying, tiles falling, pots crying out, or doors bursting open on their own, old Sun can settle it and set it right."

:「。」:「便Hearing this speech, the old man laughed heartily and said, "So you're just a glib-tongued monk who goes about begging for alms door to door." Xingzhe said, "It's your son who's glib-tongued.。」:「These past days, simply because I've been tired from traveling with my master, I've been too lazy even to talk much." The old man said, "If this is you when you're not tired and too lazy to talk, you'd surely talk me to death if you weren't.西Since you have such abilities, then indeed one can still make it to the Western Regions — indeed one can.How many are in your party? :「Please come into my thatched cottage and rest for the night." Sanzang said, "I am deeply grateful for the old benefactor's kindness in not scolding us.。」:「?」:「?」:「!」:「。」:「。」:「There are three of us in all." The old man said, "Where is the other one?" Xingzhe pointed and said, "This old man's eyes are dim — isn't that one standing under the green shade?" The old man's eyes were indeed dim; he suddenly raised his head to look closely, and at the sight of Bajie's face and features, he was so startled he stumbled with every step, running wildly back into the house, shouting only, "Shut the gate! Shut the gate! A monster has come!" Xingzhe caught up and grabbed hold of him, saying, "Old man, don't be afraid — he isn't a monster, he's my fellow disciple." The old man, trembling, said, "Good, good, good — one monk uglier than the last." Bajie stepped forward and said, "Old sir, if you judge people by their looks, you're quite mistaken.。」We may be ugly, but we're both useful."

Just as the old man stood at the gate talking with the three monks, from the south side of the village came two young men, leading an old woman and three or four small children, their clothes tucked up and their feet bare, returning from transplanting rice seedlings.:「?」調西They saw a white horse and a load of luggage making a commotion at their gate, and not knowing what this was about, all crowded forward and asked, "What's going on here?" Bajie turned his head toward them, flapped his ears a few times, and stretched out his long snout, frightening the people so badly that they staggered east and west and stumbled all over each other.滿:「Sanzang, alarmed, called out with all his might, "Don't be afraid, don't be afraid.。」:「We are not evil men — we are monks going to fetch scriptures." Only then did the old man come out of the house, and supporting the old woman, said, "Get up, old woman, there's no need for such fright. This master has come from the Tang court; it's just that his disciple's face is somewhat ugly, though his heart is kind despite his fierce looks.。」Take the children home." Only then did the old woman, holding onto the old man, and the two young men, leading the children, go inside.

:「。」:「Sanzang, meanwhile, sat on the bamboo couch in the old man's gate-tower, complaining, "Disciples, both of you are ugly in appearance and coarse in speech, and you've frightened this whole family half to death — you're piling up sin on my behalf." Bajie said, "I won't hide it from you, Master — since I've followed you, this old hog has actually gotten a good deal more refined.。」:「。」:「?」:「If it were like the old days at Gao Village, where I'd just thrust my snout forward and flap my two ears, I'd often frighten twenty or thirty people half to death." Xingzhe laughed and said, "Fool, don't talk nonsense — just tone down that ugliness of yours a bit." Sanzang said, "Listen to what Wukong says — his looks are what he was born with, how do you expect him to 'tone them down'?" Xingzhe said, "Tuck that rake-mouth of his into his robe and don't let it show;。」pin those palm-leaf-fan ears of his flat behind him and don't let them flap — that will be 'toning down.'" Bajie did indeed tuck in his mouth and lay back his ears, and stood bowing his head to one side.Xingzhe carried the luggage in through the gate and tied the white horse to a stake.

Then they saw the old man come in, leading a young man carrying a wooden tray, bringing three cups of clear tea to offer them. After the tea, he further gave orders to prepare a vegetarian meal.窿The young man then brought out an old table full of holes and bare of lacquer, and set down two stools with broken tops and cracked legs, placing them in the courtyard, and invited the three to sit in the cool.:「?」:「。」「?」:「。」:「。」:「?」:「。」:「。」:「西?」:「Sanzang then asked, "May I ask the old benefactor's honorable surname?" The old man said, "This humble one's surname is Wang." "How many sons do you have?" He said, "I have two sons and three grandsons." Sanzang said, "Congratulations, congratulations." He asked further, "And your venerable age?" The old man said, "I have foolishly lived sixty-one years." Xingzhe said, "Good, good, good — you've come round again to the cycle of sixty." Sanzang asked again, "Old benefactor, why did you say at first that the scriptures of the Western Heaven are hard to obtain?" The old man said, "It is not the scriptures that are hard to obtain — it is the road there that is hard and dangerous to travel.西Going west from here, some thirty li away, there is a mountain called the Eight-Hundred-Li Yellow Wind Ridge, and on that mountain there are many demons and monsters. That is why I said it is hard to obtain.。」:「But judging from this little master's talk of his many abilities, it does seem he could indeed get through." Xingzhe said, "No trouble, no trouble.。」With old Sun and this fellow disciple of mine along, whatever manner of demon it may be, it wouldn't dare provoke us."

:「。」Just as they were speaking, the son came bringing the meal and set it on the table, saying, "Please eat." Sanzang put his palms together and began reciting the grace before meals.Bajie had already gulped down a whole bowl. The elder had not yet finished his few lines of the sutra when the fool had already eaten a full three more bowls.:「。」:「。」Xingzhe said, "This chaff-swallower — he must have run into a hungry ghost." Old Wang, being rather tactful, seeing him eat so fast, said, "This master must truly be starving — quick, bring more rice." The fool truly had a huge appetite; without once raising his head, he ate a good ten-odd bowls in a row.Sanzang and Xingzhe together had not managed two bowls between them.便The fool showed no sign of stopping, and kept right on eating.:「。」:「。」:「Old Wang said, "We had no time to prepare proper dishes, and dare not press you too hard, but please do have another helping." Sanzang and Xingzhe both said, "We've had enough." Bajie said, "Old man, what are you muttering about? Who's doing divination with you, talking about the fifth line and sixth line?。」Just keep bringing the rice as long as there is any." The fool, in one sitting, ate up every last bit of rice in the whole household, and still said he was only half full.Only then were the dishes cleared away, and beneath the gate-tower a bamboo couch and board bed were set up for them to sleep on.

The next day at dawn, Xingzhe went to saddle the horse, and Bajie went to pack the load.Old Wang also had the old woman prepare some pastries and hot water for them, and only after the three had eaten did they give their thanks and set off.:「。」:「The old man said, "If on this journey something untoward should happen on the road, you must be sure to come back to this thatched cottage." Xingzhe said, "Old man, don't talk such foolish talk.。」西We monks who have left the household never take the road back the way we came." With that, they whipped the horse on and shouldered the load, heading west.

Alas!西On this journey, indeed there was no good road leading to the Western Regions — surely some evil demon would bring down a great calamity. The three had gone on for less than half a day when indeed they came upon a high mountain, and it is said to have been exceedingly steep and perilous. When Sanzang's horse reached the edge of the cliff, he tilted his sedge hat aslant and looked out — and indeed:

The master gently reined in his silver-white steed, the Great Sage Sun slowed his cloud-treading pace, and Zhu Wuneng shifted his carrying-pole and walked on slowly.Just as they were gazing at the mountain, suddenly they heard a whirlwind rise up fiercely.:「。」:「Sanzang, on horseback, was struck with fear and said, "Wukong, a wind has risen." Xingzhe said, "What is there to fear from wind??」:「。」:「?」:「This is merely the natural breath of the four seasons in Heaven's realm — what is there to fear?" Sanzang said, "This wind is most fierce, quite unlike the winds of Heaven." Xingzhe said, "How can you tell it's not like the winds of Heaven?" Sanzang said, "Look at this wind:

:「。」:「Bajie stepped forward and grabbed hold of Xingzhe, saying, "Elder brother, the wind is very strong — let's find shelter somewhere, to be safe." Xingzhe laughed and said, "Brother, that won't do.?」:「If we hide every time the wind is strong, and by chance we come face to face with a demon, what then?" Bajie said, "Brother, haven't you heard the saying, 'Avoid lust as you would an enemy, avoid wind as you would an arrow'?。」:「。」:「There's no harm to anyone in our taking shelter for a bit." Xingzhe said, "Say nothing for now — let me grab a handful of this wind and have a sniff at it." Bajie laughed and said, "Elder brother is spinning tall tales again — how can wind be grabbed and sniffed?便。」:「。」And even if you could grab it, it would just slip away through your fingers." Xingzhe said, "Brother, you don't know that old Sun has a technique called 'grasping the wind.'" Watch the Great Sage: he let the head of the wind pass, then grasped its tail and sniffed it, and found it had a faint fishy smell.:「。」He said, "This is indeed no good wind. This wind's odor is not that of a tiger's wind — it must surely be a demon's wind. There is certainly something suspicious about it."

Before he had finished speaking, down at the mountain slope, tail whipping and paws pounding, out sprang a striped, fierce tiger.Sanzang was so alarmed he could not keep his seat in the carved saddle, and tumbled head over heels off the white horse, sprawling sideways by the road — truly his soul had scattered and his spirit fled.:「!」Bajie flung down the luggage and drew his rake, and without letting Xingzhe get ahead of him, gave a great shout, "Cursed beast, where do you think you're going!" and rushed forward, striking straight at its head. The tiger reared straight up on its hind legs, raised its left forepaw, hooked it into its own chest, and with a downward tear and a ripping, slippery sound, stripped its own hide clean off and stood there by the roadside.See what a fearsome sight it made!Ah!Its appearance was thus:

:「It shouted, "Slow down, slow down.I am none other than the vanguard scout under the command of the Great King of the Yellow Wind. Now, under the Great King's strict orders, I am patrolling this mountain to catch a few mortal men to serve as relish for his wine.?」:「What monk are you, coming from wherever, that you dare recklessly raise your weapon and harm me?" Bajie cursed, "You cursed beast! You just don't recognize who I am.西We are no mere mortal travelers passing by — we are disciples of Sanzang, the imperial brother of the Great Tang of the Land of the East, journeying west by imperial decree to worship the Buddha and seek the scriptures. You had best flee far away at once and clear the road, so as not to frighten our master, and I'll spare your life;。」but if you act so wildly as before, once this rake comes down, I'll show no mercy." The demon, giving him no chance to finish, rushed swiftly forward, feinted a stance, and clawed straight at Bajie's face;Bajie quickly dodged aside and swung his rake to strike. The demon, having no weapon in hand, turned and fled;Bajie chased after him;the demon reached a jumble of rocks at the foot of the slope, drew out two red copper broadswords, swiftly raised them, and turned to meet him.The two of them fought back and forth, clashing and colliding, before that slope.

:「Sun Xingzhe helped Tang Seng up, saying, "Master, don't be afraid.。」Just sit here for now while old Sun goes to help Bajie, to beat down that demon so we can be on our way." Only then did Sanzang manage to sit up, and trembling all over, he recited the Heart Sutra under his breath — but no more of that for now.

:「!」Xingzhe drew out his iron rod and gave a shout, "Seize him!" At this moment Bajie's spirits rallied anew, and the demon began to lose ground and retreat.:「。」Xingzhe said, "Don't let him off — we must catch up to him." The two of them, wielding rake and raising iron rod, chased him down the mountain.使The demon, flustered and at a loss, used the trick of 'the golden cicada sheds its shell' — with a roll on the ground, he revealed his true form, once again a fierce tiger.Xingzhe and Bajie were in no mood to let him go, and chased after the tiger, determined to root him out entirely.Seeing them closing in, the demon once more hooked his chest and stripped off his hide, laying it over the crouching-tiger-shaped rock, then, slipping free in his true form, transformed into a wild whirlwind and headed straight back to the crossroads.》,There he suddenly saw the master still reciting the Heart Sutra, seized him with one grasp, and, riding the long wind, carried him off.Alas for Sanzang! Truly it was fated that the River-Float should suffer many tribulations — within the gate of stillness and extinction, the path of true attainment is hard to complete.

:「。」The demon carried Tang Seng to the mouth of his cave, brought the wild wind to a stop, and said to the gate-keeper, "Go and report to the Great King that Tiger Vanguard of the front road has captured a monk, and awaits orders outside the gate." The cave master then gave the order to bring him in.:「西。」Tiger Vanguard, with the two red copper broadswords thrust in his belt, carried Tang Seng forward in both hands, knelt down, and said, "Great King, this lowly officer, unworthy though he is, was sent under your honored command to patrol the mountain, when I suddenly encountered a monk. He is Sanzang, the imperial brother and Dharma Master under the court of the great Tang, going west to worship the Buddha and seek the scriptures. I have captured him and now offer him up, a small dish for your table."

:「Hearing this, the cave master was startled and said, "I have heard it said before that this Sanzang Dharma Master is a divine monk sent by imperial decree of the great Tang to fetch scriptures; He has a disciple under him, named Sun Wukong, whose magic powers are vast and whose wit and strength are of the highest order.?」:「使"How could you manage to capture him?" The vanguard said, "He has two disciples: the first one wields a nine-toothed rake, and he has a long snout and big ears;使the other one wields an iron rod with gold hoops, and he has fiery eyes with golden pupils.使。」:「。」:「?」:「Just as they were locked in battle with your humble general, I used the trick of the golden cicada shedding its shell, slipped free, and seized this monk, presenting him to Your Greatness as a small offering for a meal." The cave master said, "Let's not eat him yet." The vanguard said, "Great King, to see food and not eat it — isn't that called being obstinate?" The cave master said, "You don't understand.便Eating him is no small matter in itself, but I fear those two disciples of his may come to the door making trouble, which would not be prudent.Let's tie him to the Wind-Fixing Stake in the back garden, and wait three or five days; if those two don't come to make a disturbance, then — first, his body will be nice and clean, and second, we won't have wagged tongues over it — won't that suit us just as we please?。」:「。」:「。」Whether boiled or steamed, fried or sautéed, there'll be no harm in taking our leisurely time enjoying him." The vanguard was overjoyed and said, "Great King's plans run deep and far — what you say is reasonable." He ordered, "You underlings, take him away."

From the side crowded seven or eight binders, who seized Tang Seng and led him off, just like a hawk seizing a swallow or sparrow, binding him tight with ropes and cords. This was truly: the ill-fated Jiangliu thinking of Xingzhe, the divine monk in distress longing for Wuneng.:「He said, "Oh, my disciples!I don't know on which mountain you are catching monsters, or in what place subduing demons, while I have been seized by a fiend and made to suffer this cruel harm — when shall we meet again? How bitter this is!If you come a little sooner, you may yet save my life;。」but if you are too late, there will certainly be no preserving it." So lamenting, he wept tears like pouring rain.

Now to tell of Xingzhe and Bajie, who chased that tiger down the mountain slope, when they saw the tiger stumble and fall, collapsing before the cliff.Xingzhe raised his rod and struck with all his might, but instead it jarred his own hand until it ached.Bajie then struck again with his rake, and its prongs too sprang back.It turned out to be only a tiger skin, draped over a rock shaped like a crouching tiger.:「!」:「?」:「Xingzhe was greatly alarmed and said, "This is bad, this is bad — we've fallen for his trick!" Bajie said, "What trick did we fall for?" Xingzhe said, "This is called the trick of the golden cicada shedding its shell: he laid the tiger skin here while he himself got away.。」Let us hurry back and see about our master, lest he suffer harm at cruel hands." The two of them turned back in haste, but Sanzang was already nowhere to be seen.:「Xingzhe cried out like thunder, "What shall we do?。」便:「Master has already been carried off by him!" Bajie at once led the horse by its reins, tears dripping from his eyes, saying, "Heaven! Heaven!?」:「Wherever shall we search for him?" Xingzhe raised his head and said, "Don't cry, don't cry — crying only blunts our fighting spirit.。」In any case, he must still be somewhere on this mountain — let's go and search for him."

The two of them indeed dashed into the mountains, crossing ridges and passing over slopes, and after traveling quite some time, they saw a cave-dwelling rising up beneath a stone cliff. The two of them halted their steps to look it over, and indeed it looked fierce and forbidding.Behold:

:「Xingzhe said, "Worthy brother, you should rest our luggage in the wind-sheltered hollow of the mountain, turn the horse loose to graze, and not show yourself.。」:「。」Let old Monkey go to his gate and do battle with him — I must capture the demon before Master can be saved." Bajie said, "No need to tell me twice — please, go quickly."

」。Xingzhe straightened his robe, tightened his tiger-skin kilt, drew out his rod, and rushed up to that gate, where he saw six large characters: "Huangfeng Ridge, Huangfeng Cave." :「。」:「?」:「。」 He then planted his feet in a T-stance, gripped his rod, and shouted loudly, "Demon! Send my master out at once, and spare yourself the trouble of having your den overturned and your dwelling trampled flat!" When the little demons heard this, every one of them grew afraid, and trembling, they ran inside to report, "Great King, disaster has struck!" The Yellow Wind Demon, who was just then sitting within, asked, "What's the matter?" The little demon said, "Outside the cave gate has come a monk with a thunder-god's mouth and a hairy face, holding an iron rod of enormous thickness, demanding his master." The cave master was startled and alarmed, and at once summoned Tiger Vanguard, saying, "I sent you to patrol the mountain only to catch some mountain oxen, wild boars, fat deer, or wild sheep — why did you have to seize that Tang monk, provoking his disciple to come here and make this uproar? What are we to do about it?" The vanguard said, "Great King, set your mind at ease and rest easy without worry.。」:「Your humble general, though unworthy, is willing to lead fifty junior soldiers out to capture that so-called Sun Wukong to add to the meal." The cave master said, "Here I have, apart from the chiefs great and small, another five or seven hundred junior soldiers — choose as you please, and take as many as you like.Only if you capture that Xingzhe can we then eat that monk's flesh at our ease and leisure — and I am willing to bow to you as sworn brothers;。」:「but I fear that if you cannot catch him, and instead he harms you, then you must not blame me for it." The tiger demon said, "Rest easy, rest easy.。」Just wait while I go."

:「?」:「Sure enough, he mustered fifty strong and sturdy little demons, beat drums and waved banners, girded on two red-copper swords, and bounded out through the gate, calling out sternly, "Where do you come from, you monkey-monk, that you dare shout and bawl so loudly here?" Xingzhe cursed, "You skin-flaying beast! What kind of shedding-the-shell trick did you play, to snatch my master away, and now you turn around and ask me what I'm doing here?。」:「Send my master out properly and at once, and I'll still spare your life." The tiger demon said, "Your master was indeed caught by me, to serve my Great King as a meal.If you know what's good for you, turn around and go back;?」:「otherwise, once we've caught you too, you'll be added to the meal together with him — isn't that like buying one and getting one free?" When Xingzhe heard this, his heart filled with fury; he ground his steel teeth with a grinding sound, his fiery eyes opened wide and glaring, and he drew out his iron rod and roared, "How great is your skill, that you dare speak such big words?。」Don't run — take my rod!" The vanguard hastily raised his blade to meet it.This battle was truly fierce; the two of them each displayed their mighty prowess — what a fight!

The tiger demon could not withstand him, and turned to flee.Since he had boasted so before the cave master, he dared not return to the cave, and fled straight up the mountain slope for his life.Xingzhe would by no means let him go, and gripping his rod, chased after him with all his might, roaring and bellowing without pause, until he chased him right into the wind-sheltered hollow of the mountain.Just then he raised his head and saw Bajie there, grazing the horse.Bajie suddenly heard the roaring shouts, and turning to look, saw it was the tiger demon being chased and beaten by Xingzhe; he at once let go of the horse, raised his rake, and struck a slanting blow at its head.窿Pity that vanguard — trying to escape, he sought to leap free of the yellow-silk net, little knowing he would meet the fisherman with his covering net instead; struck by one blow of Bajie's rake, he was left with nine gaping holes gushing fresh blood, and all the marrow drained clean out of his head. There is a poem to prove it, which says:

That idiot planted one foot on the creature's spine, and with both hands swung his rake to strike again.:「When Xingzhe saw this, he was overjoyed and said, "Brother, that's exactly right. He led several dozen little demons and dared to do battle with old Monkey; once I defeated him, instead of running back to the cave, he ran here to seek his death.。」:「?」:「。」:「?」:「Thanks to you catching him, otherwise he'd have gotten away again." Bajie said, "Was it he who raised the wind and snatched Master away?" Xingzhe said, "Just so, just so." Bajie said, "Did you ever ask him what became of Master?" Xingzhe said, "This demon has Master held in the cave, to serve as a meal for whatever damned Great King he has there.Old Monkey grew furious, and fought him all the way here, where you finished him off.Brother, this merit shall be counted as yours. You should keep watching over the horse and the luggage, while I drag this dead demon away and go back to the cave gate to challenge them to battle again.。」:「Only by capturing that old demon can Master be saved." Bajie said, "Elder brother speaks with reason. You go, you go.。」If you defeat that old demon and he flees this way again, let old Hog cut him off and kill him."

Splendid Xingzhe — with one hand gripping his iron rod and the other dragging the dead tiger, he went straight to the mouth of the cave.Truly:

In the end, we do not know whether this venture will succeed in subduing the demon and saving Tang Seng; listen to the explanation given in the next chapter.

What it’s about

On Yellow Wind Ridge a tiger demon uses a skin-shedding trick to seize Tripitaka while Wukong and Bajie are distracted. Bajie fights and kills the tiger vanguard, but the Yellow Wind King keeps the monk for a later meal and prepares his cave. Wukong challenges the king, whose supernatural gale darkens the world and defeats direct attack.

The wind injures Wukong's fiery eyes and scatters the rescuers, leaving Tripitaka captive at the chapter's end. Bajie has his first serious chance to prove useful, while Wukong discovers that even his enormous repertoire has local limits. The ordeal will require investigation and specialized help rather than another display of raw power.

When it was written 背景

This 回 begins a recurring pilgrimage structure: abduction, failed combat, discovery of a monster's origin and intervention by the authority equipped for that particular magic. Extravagant wind verse conveys force more than realistic weather. Learners should anchor on the tiger's trick, Bajie's pursuit and Wukong's eye injury; resolution belongs deliberately to the next chapter.
