卻說那怪的火光前走，這大聖的彩霞隨後。Now, the demon's ball of fire sped on ahead, with the Great Sage's rainbow clouds close behind.正行處，忽見一座高山，那怪把紅光結聚，現了本相，撞入洞內，取出一柄九齒釘鈀來戰。Just as they were traveling, a high mountain suddenly appeared; the demon gathered in its red light, resumed its true form, rushed into a cave, and brought out a nine-toothed rake to do battle.行者喝一聲道：「潑怪！Wukong shouted, 'Vile demon!你是那裡來的邪魔？Where do you come from, you evil spirit?怎麼知道我老孫的名號？How do you know old Sun's name?你有甚麼本事，實實供來，饒你性命。」那怪道：「是你也不知我的手段，上前來站穩著，我說與你聽。What powers do you have? Confess them truthfully, and I'll spare your life.' The demon said, 'So you don't know my skill either. Come closer and stand firm, and I'll tell you.'我：I:

却说那怪的火光前走，这大圣的彩霞随后。正行处，忽见一座高山，那怪把红光结聚，现了本相，撞入洞内，取出一柄九齿钉钯来战。行者喝一声道：「泼怪！你是那里来的邪魔？怎么知道我老孙的名号？你有甚么本事，实实供来，饶你性命。」那怪道：「是你也不知我的手段，上前来站稳著，我说与你听。我：

行者聞言道：「你這廝原來是天蓬水神下界，怪道知我老孫名號。」那怪道聲：「哏！Hearing this, Wukong said, 'So you're Tianpeng, the Water God, descended to earth — no wonder you know old Sun's name.' The demon snorted, 'Hmph!你這誑上的弼馬溫，當年撞那禍時，不知帶累我等多少，今日又來此欺人。You lying, upstart Protector of the Horses — back when you caused that disaster, who knows how many of us you dragged down with you, and now you come here again to bully people.不要無禮，吃我一鈀。」行者怎肯容情，舉起棒，當頭就打。Don't be so insolent — take this rake of mine!' Wukong was in no mood to show mercy; he raised his staff and struck straight at the demon's head.他兩個在那半山之中，黑夜裡賭鬥。The two of them fought there on the mountainside, battling through the black night.好殺：What a fight:

行者闻言道：「你这厮原来是天蓬水神下界，怪道知我老孙名号。」那怪道声：「哏！你这诳上的弼马温，当年撞那祸时，不知带累我等多少，今日又来此欺人。不要无礼，吃我一钯。」行者怎肯容情，举起棒，当头就打。他两个在那半山之中，黑夜里赌斗。好杀：

他兩個自二更時分，直戰到東方發白。The two fought from the second watch of the night clear until the sky grew light in the east.那怪不能迎敵，敗陣而逃，依然又化狂風，徑回洞裡，把門緊閉，再不出頭。Unable to hold his ground, the demon lost the fight and fled, turning once more into a wild wind and heading straight back to his cave, where he shut the door tight and would not show his face again.行者在這洞門外看有一座石碣，上書雲棧洞三字。Outside the cave's gate Wukong saw a stone tablet inscribed with the three characters 'Yunzhan Cave.'見那怪不出，天又大明，心卻思量：「恐師父等候，且回去見他一見，再來捉此怪不遲。」隨踏雲點一點，早到高老莊。Seeing that the demon would not come out, and that day had fully broken, he thought to himself, 'My master must be waiting for me — let me go back and see him first; there'll be time enough to catch this demon later.' With that he stepped onto a cloud, and in an instant he was at Gao Laozhuang.

他两个自二更时分，直战到东方发白。那怪不能迎敌，败阵而逃，依然又化狂风，径回洞里，把门紧闭，再不出头。行者在这洞门外看有一座石碣，上书云栈洞三字。见那怪不出，天又大明，心却思量：「恐师父等候，且回去见他一见，再来捉此怪不迟。」随踏云点一点，早到高老庄。

卻說三藏與那諸老談今論古，一夜無眠。Meanwhile, Sanzang had spent the whole night talking with the old men of the household about times past and present, never sleeping.正想行者不來，只見天井裡忽然站下行者。Just as he was wondering why Wukong had not returned, he suddenly saw Wukong standing there in the courtyard.行者收藏鐵棒，整衣上廳。Wukong put away his iron staff, straightened his clothes, and went up into the hall.叫道：「師父，我來了。」慌得那諸老一齊下拜，謝道：「多勞，多勞。」三藏問道：「悟空，你去這一夜，拿得妖精在那裡？」行者道：「師父，那妖不是凡間的邪祟，也不是山間的怪獸。He called out, 'Master, I'm back!' The old men, startled, all bowed at once, saying, 'Our thanks, our thanks for the trouble.' Sanzang asked, 'Wukong, you were gone all night — where did you catch the monster?' Wukong said, 'Master, this monster is no ordinary earthly demon, nor a wild beast of the mountains.'他本是天蓬元帥臨凡，只因錯投了胎，嘴臉像一個野豬模樣，其實性靈尚存。He is originally Marshal Tianpeng, who descended into the mortal world; only because he was mistakenly reborn into the wrong womb, his face and snout look like a wild boar's, though in truth his spiritual nature remains.他說以相為姓，喚名豬剛鬣。He said he took his appearance as his surname, and is called Zhu Ganglie.是老孫從後宅裡掣棒就打，他化一陣狂風走了。I drew my staff and struck at him from the back chambers, and he turned into a gust of wild wind and fled.被老孫著風一棒，他就化道火光，徑轉他那本山洞裡，取出一柄九齒釘鈀，與老孫戰了一夜。When I struck at the wind with a blow of my staff, he turned into a streak of fire and went straight back to his own mountain cave, where he brought out a nine-toothed rake and fought with me all through the night.適才天色將明，他怯戰而走，把洞門緊閉不出。Just now, as day was about to break, he lost his nerve and fled, shutting the cave door tight and refusing to come out.老孫還要打開那門，與他見個好歹，恐師父在此疑慮盼望，故先來回個信息。」I meant to break open that door and settle things with him once and for all, but I feared you, Master, would be worried and waiting here, so I came first to bring you word.'

却说三藏与那诸老谈今论古，一夜无眠。正想行者不来，只见天井里忽然站下行者。行者收藏铁棒，整衣上厅。叫道：「师父，我来了。」慌得那诸老一齐下拜，谢道：「多劳，多劳。」三藏问道：「悟空，你去这一夜，拿得妖精在那里？」行者道：「师父，那妖不是凡间的邪祟，也不是山间的怪兽。他本是天蓬元帅临凡，只因错投了胎，嘴脸像一个野猪模样，其实性灵尚存。他说以相为姓，唤名猪刚鬣。是老孙从后宅里掣棒就打，他化一阵狂风走了。被老孙著风一棒，他就化道火光，径转他那本山洞里，取出一柄九齿钉钯，与老孙战了一夜。适才天色将明，他怯战而走，把洞门紧闭不出。老孙还要打开那门，与他见个好歹，恐师父在此疑虑盼望，故先来回个信息。」

說罷，那老高上前跪下道：「長老，沒及奈何，你雖趕得去了，他等你去後復來，卻怎區處？When he finished speaking, old Gao came forward, knelt down, and said, 'Elder, there's nothing to be done about it — even though you drove him off, once you leave he'll come back again. What are we to do then?索性累你與我拿住，除了根，才無後患。You might as well trouble yourself to capture him for me outright and pull up the root, so there will be no future trouble.我老夫不敢怠慢，自有重謝：將這家財田地，憑眾親友寫立文書，與長老平分。I would not dare to be remiss — I will surely reward you well: I'll have our relatives and friends draw up a deed for my family's property and land, and share it equally with you, Elder.只是要剪草除根，莫教壞了我高門清德。」行者笑道：「你這老兒不知分限。Only I ask that you cut the grass and dig out the root, so that my Gao family's good name is not ruined.' Wukong laughed and said, 'Old man, you don't know when to stop.'那怪也曾對我說，他雖是食腸大，吃了你家些茶飯，也與你幹了許多好事，這幾年掙了許多家貲，皆是他之力量。That demon told me himself that although he has a big appetite and has eaten a good deal of your family's food and drink, he has also done a great many good turns for you — these past years the wealth your family has amassed is all thanks to his labor.他不曾白吃了你東西，問你祛他怎的？He hasn't eaten your food for nothing — why do you want to drive him away?據他說，他是一個天神下界，替你巴家做活，又未曾害了你家女兒。By his own account, he is a heavenly spirit come down to earth, working to build up your household, and he has never done any harm to your daughter.想這等一個女婿，也門當戶對，不怎麼壞了家聲，辱了行止，當真的留他也罷。」老高道：「長老，雖是不傷風化，但名聲不甚好聽，動不動著人就說：『高家招了一個妖怪女婿。』這句話兒教人怎當？」三藏道：「悟空，你既是與他做了一場，一發與他做個結局，才見始終。」行者道：「我才試他一試耍子。Considering it, such a son-in-law is not so ill-matched after all, and does no real harm to your family's reputation or conduct — perhaps you really might as well keep him.' Old Gao said, 'Elder, even if it doesn't offend public morals, the reputation isn't a pleasant one — people are forever saying, "The Gao family has taken in a demon son-in-law." How can anyone bear to hear such talk?' Sanzang said, 'Wukong, since you've already had a bout with him, you might as well see the matter through to its conclusion.' Wukong said, 'I was only having a bit of sport testing him.'此去一定拿來與你們看，且莫憂愁。」叫：「老高，你還好生管待我師父，我去也。」'This time I'll be sure to bring him back for you to see — don't worry.' Then he called out, 'Old Gao, take good care of my master. I'm off.'

说罢，那老高上前跪下道：「长老，没及奈何，你虽赶得去了，他等你去后复来，却怎区处？索性累你与我拿住，除了根，才无后患。我老夫不敢怠慢，自有重谢：将这家财田地，凭众亲友写立文书，与长老平分。只是要剪草除根，莫教坏了我高门清德。」行者笑道：「你这老儿不知分限。那怪也曾对我说，他虽是食肠大，吃了你家些茶饭，也与你干了许多好事，这几年挣了许多家赀，皆是他之力量。他不曾白吃了你东西，问你祛他怎的？据他说，他是一个天神下界，替你巴家做活，又未曾害了你家女儿。想这等一个女婿，也门当户对，不怎么坏了家声，辱了行止，当真的留他也罢。」老高道：「长老，虽是不伤风化，但名声不甚好听，动不动著人就说：『高家招了一个妖怪女婿。』这句话儿教人怎当？」三藏道：「悟空，你既是与他做了一场，一发与他做个结局，才见始终。」行者道：「我才试他一试耍子。此去一定拿来与你们看，且莫忧愁。」叫：「老高，你还好生管待我师父，我去也。」

說聲去，就無形無影的，跳到他那山上，來到洞口，一頓鐵棍，把兩扇門打得粉碎。No sooner said than done — vanishing without a trace, he leapt to that mountain, came to the cave entrance, and with a few blows of his iron staff smashed both doors to pieces.口裡罵道：「那饢糠的夯貨，快出來與老孫打麼。」那怪正喘噓噓的睡在洞內，聽見打得門響，又聽見罵饢糠的夯貨，他卻惱怒難禁，只得拖著鈀，抖擻精神，跑將出來，厲聲罵道：「你這個弼馬溫，著實憊懶。He cursed as he did so, 'You husk-guzzling lump, come out and fight old Sun!' The demon was inside, sleeping and snoring away; hearing the door smashed and hearing himself cursed as a husk-guzzling lump, he could not contain his fury, and had no choice but to drag out his rake, rouse his spirits, and rush out, cursing loudly, 'You Protector of the Horses, you're truly shameless.'與你有甚相干，你把我大門打破？What business is it of yours, that you smash down my front gate?你且去看看律條，打進大門而入，該個雜犯死罪哩。」行者笑道：「這個獃子！Go and check the statutes — breaking into someone's gate is a capital offense.' Wukong laughed, 'This fool!我就打了大門，還有個辨處。Even if I did break your gate, there's an explanation for it.像你強占人家女子，又沒個三媒六證，又無些茶紅酒禮，該問個真犯斬罪哩。」那怪道：「且休閑講，看老豬這鈀。」行者使棒支住道：「你這鈀可是與高老家做長工築地種菜的？But you, forcibly taking another man's daughter, without a single proper matchmaker or witness, without a shred of betrothal gifts or wedding wine — that's a crime deserving outright beheading!' The demon said, 'Enough idle talk — taste old Pig's rake!' Wukong held it off with his staff and said, 'Is this the rake you used as a hired hand at the Gao house, tilling the fields and planting vegetables?有何好處怕你？」那怪道：「你錯認了，這鈀豈是凡間之物？What's so impressive about it that I should fear you?' The demon said, 'You're mistaken — how could this rake be some ordinary earthly thing?你且聽我道來：Just listen as I tell you:

说声去，就无形无影的，跳到他那山上，来到洞口，一顿铁棍，把两扇门打得粉碎。口里骂道：「那馕糠的夯货，快出来与老孙打么。」那怪正喘嘘嘘的睡在洞内，听见打得门响，又听见骂馕糠的夯货，他却恼怒难禁，只得拖著钯，抖擞精神，跑将出来，厉声骂道：「你这个弼马温，著实惫懒。与你有甚相干，你把我大门打破？你且去看看律条，打进大门而入，该个杂犯死罪哩。」行者笑道：「这个呆子！我就打了大门，还有个辨处。像你强占人家女子，又没个三媒六证，又无些茶红酒礼，该问个真犯斩罪哩。」那怪道：「且休闲讲，看老猪这钯。」行者使棒支住道：「你这钯可是与高老家做长工筑地种菜的？有何好处怕你？」那怪道：「你错认了，这钯岂是凡间之物？你且听我道来：

行者聞言，收了鐵棒道：「獃子不要說嘴，老孫把這頭伸在那裡，你且築一下兒，看可能魂消氣泄？」那怪真個舉起鈀，著氣力築將來，撲的一下，鑽起鈀的火光焰焰，更不曾築動一些兒頭皮。Hearing this, Wukong lowered his iron staff and said, 'Don't boast, fool. Old Sun will stick his head out right here — go on and strike it once, and see whether my soul scatters and my breath fails.' The demon truly raised his rake and struck down with all his strength; with a thud, sparks of fire flew up from the rake, but it did not so much as budge a bit of skin on Wukong's head.諕得他手麻腳軟，道聲：「好頭！This gave the demon such a fright that his hands went numb and his legs turned to jelly, and he exclaimed, 'What a head!好頭！」行者道：「你是也不知。What a head!' Wukong said, 'You just don't know.'老孫因為鬧天宮，偷了仙丹，盜了蟠桃，竊了御酒，被小聖二郎擒住，押在斗牛宮前，眾天神把老孫斧剁鎚敲，刀砍劍刺，火燒雷打，也不曾損動分毫。Because I raised havoc in Heaven, stole the immortal elixir, pilfered the peaches of immortality, and made off with the imperial wine, I was captured by the Small Sage Erlang and taken before the Doniu Palace, where all the heavenly spirits hacked at me with axes, pounded me with hammers, hewed me with swords, stabbed me with blades, burned me with fire, and struck me with thunder — yet not so much as a hair of mine was harmed.又被那太上老君拿了我去，放在八卦爐中，將神火鍛煉，煉做個火眼金睛，銅頭鐵臂。Then Lord Laozi took me away and put me in his Eight Trigrams Furnace, refining me with divine fire, until I was forged with fiery eyes and golden pupils, a head of bronze and arms of iron.不信，你再築幾下，看看疼與不疼？」那怪道：「你這猴子，我記得你鬧天宮時，家住在東勝神洲傲來國花果山水簾洞裡，到如今久不聞名，你怎麼來到這裡，上門子欺我？If you don't believe me, strike a few more times and see whether it hurts or not.' The demon said, 'You monkey — I remember that when you raised havoc in Heaven, your home was the Water Curtain Cave on Flower-Fruit Mountain, in the Aolai Kingdom of the Eastern Continent of Superior Body. I haven't heard your name in a long while now — how do you come to be here, showing up at my door to bully me?莫敢是我丈人去那裡請你來的？」行者道：「你丈人不曾去請我。Could it be that my father-in-law went and asked you to come?' Wukong said, 'Your father-in-law did not go asking for me.'因是老孫改邪歸正，棄道從僧，保護一個東土大唐駕下御弟，叫做三藏法師，往西天拜佛求經，路過高莊借宿，那高老兒因話說起，就請我救他女兒，拿你這饢糠的夯貨。」It is because I have turned from evil to good, given up Daoism to follow Buddhism, and am now escorting an imperial younger brother of the Great Tang court of the Eastern Land, called the Tripitaka Master Sanzang, on his journey west to worship the Buddha and seek the scriptures. We passed through Gao Village to seek lodging, and old man Gao, when the matter came up in conversation, asked me to save his daughter and capture you, you husk-guzzling lump.'

行者闻言，收了铁棒道：「呆子不要说嘴，老孙把这头伸在那里，你且筑一下儿，看可能魂消气泄？」那怪真个举起钯，著气力筑将来，扑的一下，钻起钯的火光焰焰，更不曾筑动一些儿头皮。諕得他手麻脚软，道声：「好头！好头！」行者道：「你是也不知。老孙因为闹天宫，偷了仙丹，盗了蟠桃，窃了御酒，被小圣二郎擒住，押在斗牛宫前，众天神把老孙斧剁锤敲，刀砍剑刺，火烧雷打，也不曾损动分毫。又被那太上老君拿了我去，放在八卦炉中，将神火锻炼，炼做个火眼金睛，铜头铁臂。不信，你再筑几下，看看疼与不疼？」那怪道：「你这猴子，我记得你闹天宫时，家住在东胜神洲傲来国花果山水帘洞里，到如今久不闻名，你怎么来到这里，上门子欺我？莫敢是我丈人去那里请你来的？」行者道：「你丈人不曾去请我。因是老孙改邪归正，弃道从僧，保护一个东土大唐驾下御弟，叫做三藏法师，往西天拜佛求经，路过高庄借宿，那高老儿因话说起，就请我救他女儿，拿你这馕糠的夯货。」

那怪一聞此言，丟了釘鈀，唱個大喏道：「那取經人在那裡？On hearing this, the demon threw down his rake, made a deep bow, and said, 'Where is this scripture-seeker?累煩你引見引見。」行者道：「你要見他怎的？」那怪道：「我本是觀世音菩薩勸善，受了他的戒行，這裡持齋把素，教我跟隨那取經人往西天拜佛求經，將功折罪，還得正果。I beg you to trouble yourself and introduce me to him.' Wukong said, 'What do you want to see him for?' The demon said, 'I was originally persuaded to virtue by the Bodhisattva Guanyin, and received the commandments from her. Here I have kept a vegetarian fast, and she told me to follow this scripture-seeker to the Western Heaven to worship the Buddha and seek the scriptures, to atone for my sins through merit and attain the true fruit.教我等他這幾年，不聞消息。She told me to wait for him, and these several years I have heard no news.今日既是你與他做了徒弟，何不早說取經之事，只倚兇強，上門打我？」行者道：「你莫詭詐欺心軟我，欲為脫身之計。Since today you have already become his disciple, why didn't you say so about the scripture-seeking earlier, instead of relying on brute force and coming to my door to attack me?' Wukong said, 'Don't try to trick and soften me with lies as a way to save your own skin.'果然是要保護唐僧，略無虛假，你可朝天發誓，我才帶你去見我師父。」那怪撲的跪下，望空似搗碓的一般，只管磕頭道：「阿彌陀佛，南無佛，我若不是真心實意，還教我犯了天條，劈屍萬段。」行者見他賭咒發願，道：「既然如此，你點把火來燒了你這住處，我方帶你去。」那怪真個搬些蘆葦荊棘，點著一把火，將那雲棧洞燒得像個破瓦窰。If you truly mean to protect Tang Sanzang, without the slightest falsehood, then swear an oath to Heaven, and only then will I take you to see my master.' The demon flopped down on his knees and, facing the sky, kept knocking his head to the ground like a pestle pounding a mortar, saying, 'Amitabha Buddha, Namo Buddha — if I am not sincere and true of heart, may I be made to violate the laws of Heaven and have my corpse hacked into ten thousand pieces.' Seeing him swear such an oath, Wukong said, 'Since that is so, set fire to this dwelling of yours and burn it down, and then I will take you.' The demon truly gathered up some reeds and thorn bushes, lit a fire, and burned Yunzhan Cave until it looked like a ruined kiln.對行者道：「我今已無罣礙了，你卻引我去罷。」行者道：「你把釘鈀與我拿著。」那怪就把鈀遞與行者。He said to Wukong, 'Now I have nothing left to hold me back — please lead me there.' Wukong said, 'Hand your rake over to me to carry.' The demon then handed the rake to Wukong.行者又拔了一根毫毛，吹口仙氣，叫：「變！」即變做一條三股麻繩，走過來，把手背綁剪了。Wukong then plucked out a hair, blew a breath of immortal breath onto it, and cried, 'Change!' It at once turned into a three-strand hemp rope; he went over and bound the demon's hands tightly behind his back.那怪真個倒背著手，憑他怎麼綁縛。The demon truly put his hands behind his back and let himself be bound however Wukong pleased.卻又揪著耳朵，拉著他，叫：「快走，快走。」那怪道：「輕著些兒，你的手重，揪得我耳根子疼。」行者道：「輕不成，顧你不得。Then Wukong seized him by the ear and dragged him along, shouting, 'Hurry, hurry!' The demon said, 'Go easy — your hand is heavy, and pulling my ear like that hurts.' Wukong said, 'Easy won't do — I can't be bothered about you.'常言道：『善豬惡拿。』只等見了我師父，果有真心，方才放你。」他兩個半雲半霧的，徑轉高家莊來。As the saying goes, 'A good pig must be caught roughly.' Only once you've seen my master, and it's proven you're truly sincere, will I let you go.' The two of them, half on cloud and half on mist, headed straight back to Gao Village.有詩為證：There is a poem to prove it:

那怪一闻此言，丢了钉钯，唱个大喏道：「那取经人在那里？累烦你引见引见。」行者道：「你要见他怎的？」那怪道：「我本是观世音菩萨劝善，受了他的戒行，这里持斋把素，教我跟随那取经人往西天拜佛求经，将功折罪，还得正果。教我等他这几年，不闻消息。今日既是你与他做了徒弟，何不早说取经之事，只倚凶强，上门打我？」行者道：「你莫诡诈欺心软我，欲为脱身之计。果然是要保护唐僧，略无虚假，你可朝天发誓，我才带你去见我师父。」那怪扑的跪下，望空似捣碓的一般，只管磕头道：「阿弥陀佛，南无佛，我若不是真心实意，还教我犯了天条，劈尸万段。」行者见他赌咒发愿，道：「既然如此，你点把火来烧了你这住处，我方带你去。」那怪真个搬些芦苇荆棘，点著一把火，将那云栈洞烧得像个破瓦窰。对行者道：「我今已无罣碍了，你却引我去罢。」行者道：「你把钉钯与我拿著。」那怪就把钯递与行者。行者又拔了一根毫毛，吹口仙气，叫：「变！」即变做一条三股麻绳，走过来，把手背绑剪了。那怪真个倒背著手，凭他怎么绑缚。却又揪著耳朵，拉著他，叫：「快走，快走。」那怪道：「轻著些儿，你的手重，揪得我耳根子疼。」行者道：「轻不成，顾你不得。常言道：『善猪恶拿。』只等见了我师父，果有真心，方才放你。」他两个半云半雾的，径转高家庄来。有诗为证：

頃刻間到了莊前。In an instant they arrived in front of the village.行者拑著他的鈀，揪著他的耳道：「你看那廳堂上端坐的是誰？Wukong, gripping the rake and pulling him by the ear, said, 'Look — who is that sitting upright there in the hall?乃吾師也。」那高氏諸親友與老高，忽見行者把那怪背綁揪耳而來，一個個忻然迎到天井中，道聲：「長老，長老，他正是我家的女婿。」那怪走上前，雙膝跪下，背著手，對三藏叩頭，高叫道：「師父，弟子失迎。That is my master.' When old Gao and his assembled relatives and friends suddenly saw Wukong dragging the demon along by the ear with his hands bound behind him, they all came out joyfully to greet him in the courtyard, saying, 'Elder, elder — this is indeed our family's son-in-law.' The demon stepped forward, knelt down on both knees, and with his hands still bound behind his back, kowtowed to Sanzang, crying loudly, 'Master, your disciple has failed to welcome you properly.早知是師父住在我丈人家，我就來拜接，怎麼又受到許多周折？」三藏道：「悟空，你怎麼降得他來拜我？」行者才放了手，拿釘鈀柄兒打著，喝道：「獃子，你說麼。」那怪把菩薩勸善事情，細陳了一遍。Had I known earlier that you, Master, were staying at my father-in-law's house, I would have come to bow and receive you at once — why should I have had to go through so much trouble instead?' Sanzang said, 'Wukong, how did you manage to subdue him and bring him here to bow to me?' Only then did Wukong release his hold; tapping him with the handle of the rake, he shouted, 'Fool, tell him yourself.' The demon then recounted in detail how the Bodhisattva had persuaded him to virtue.

顷刻间到了庄前。行者拑著他的钯，揪著他的耳道：「你看那厅堂上端坐的是谁？乃吾师也。」那高氏诸亲友与老高，忽见行者把那怪背绑揪耳而来，一个个忻然迎到天井中，道声：「长老，长老，他正是我家的女婿。」那怪走上前，双膝跪下，背著手，对三藏叩头，高叫道：「师父，弟子失迎。早知是师父住在我丈人家，我就来拜接，怎么又受到许多周折？」三藏道：「悟空，你怎么降得他来拜我？」行者才放了手，拿钉钯柄儿打著，喝道：「呆子，你说么。」那怪把菩萨劝善事情，细陈了一遍。

三藏大喜，便叫：「高太公，取個香案用用。」老高即忙擡出香案。Sanzang was greatly pleased and called out, 'Squire Gao, please bring out an incense table for use.' Old Gao at once hurried to carry out an incense table.三藏淨了手焚香，望南禮拜道：「多蒙菩薩聖恩。」那幾個老兒也一齊添香禮拜。Sanzang washed his hands, lit incense, and bowed toward the south, saying, 'Deeply grateful for the Bodhisattva's sacred grace.' The old men there likewise all added incense and bowed together.拜罷，三藏上廳高坐，教悟空放了他繩。After the bowing was done, Sanzang went up and sat high in the hall, and told Wukong to untie the rope.行者才把身抖了一抖，收上身來，其縛自解。Only then did Wukong give his body a shake, drawing the hair back into himself, and the bonds loosened of themselves.那怪從新禮拜三藏，願隨西去。The demon then bowed once more to Sanzang, expressing his wish to accompany him to the West.又與行者拜了，以先進者為兄，遂稱行者為師兄。He also bowed to Wukong, and since Wukong had entered the faith first, he addressed him as elder brother, calling him Senior Disciple-Brother.三藏道：「既從吾善果，要做徒弟，我與你起個法名，早晚好呼喚。」他道：「師父，我是菩薩已與我摩頂受戒，起了法名，叫做豬悟能也。」三藏笑道：「好，好。Sanzang said, 'Since you are following me toward good karma and wish to become my disciple, I will give you a Dharma name, so that I may call you by it morning and night.' He said, 'Master, the Bodhisattva already laid her hand upon my crown, administered the precepts to me, and gave me the Dharma name Zhu Wuneng.' Sanzang laughed and said, 'Good, good.'你師兄叫做悟空，你叫做悟能，其實是我法門中的宗派。」悟能道：「師父，我受了菩薩戒行，斷了五葷三厭，在我丈人家持齋把素，更不曾動葷。'Your elder brother is called Wukong, and you are called Wuneng — indeed these names belong to the lineage of my own school.' Wuneng said, 'Master, having received the Bodhisattva's precepts, I gave up the five pungent herbs and the three forbidden meats, and at my father-in-law's house I kept strictly to a vegetarian diet, never once touching meat.今日見了師父，我開了齋罷。」三藏道：「不可，不可。But now that I have met you, Master, let me break my fast today.' Sanzang said, 'No, no, that will not do.你既是不吃五葷三厭，我再與你起個別名，喚為八戒。」那獃子歡歡喜喜道：「謹遵師命。」因此又叫做豬八戒。Since you do not eat the five pungent herbs or the three forbidden meats, I will give you another name as well, and call you Eight Prohibitions.' The fool said joyfully, 'I respectfully obey my master's command.' And from then on he was also called Zhu Bajie.

三藏大喜，便叫：「高太公，取个香案用用。」老高即忙抬出香案。三藏净了手焚香，望南礼拜道：「多蒙菩萨圣恩。」那几个老儿也一齐添香礼拜。拜罢，三藏上厅高坐，教悟空放了他绳。行者才把身抖了一抖，收上身来，其缚自解。那怪从新礼拜三藏，愿随西去。又与行者拜了，以先进者为兄，遂称行者为师兄。三藏道：「既从吾善果，要做徒弟，我与你起个法名，早晚好呼唤。」他道：「师父，我是菩萨已与我摩顶受戒，起了法名，叫做猪悟能也。」三藏笑道：「好，好。你师兄叫做悟空，你叫做悟能，其实是我法门中的宗派。」悟能道：「师父，我受了菩萨戒行，断了五荤三厌，在我丈人家持斋把素，更不曾动荤。今日见了师父，我开了斋罢。」三藏道：「不可，不可。你既是不吃五荤三厌，我再与你起个别名，唤为八戒。」那呆子欢欢喜喜道：「谨遵师命。」因此又叫做猪八戒。

高老見這等去邪歸正，更十分喜悅，遂命家僮安排筵宴，酬謝唐僧。Seeing him thus turn from evil to righteousness, old Gao was all the more delighted, and at once ordered the household servants to prepare a banquet to thank Tang Sanzang.八戒上前扯住老高道：「爺，請我拙荊出來拜見公公、伯伯，如何？」行者笑道：「賢弟，你既入了沙門，做了和尚，從今後，再莫題起那『拙荊』的話說。Bajie came forward, pulled at old Gao's sleeve and said, 'Father-in-law, why not have my humble wife come out to pay her respects to my father-in-law and uncles?' Wukong laughed and said, 'Worthy brother, now that you have entered the Buddhist order and become a monk, from this day on you must never again bring up talk of your "humble wife."'世間只有個火居道士，那裡有個火居的和尚？In this world there are only married Daoist priests who keep house — where is there ever a married monk who keeps house?我們且來敘了坐次，吃頓齋飯，趕早兒往西天走路。」高老兒擺了桌席，請三藏上坐；Let's take our seats in order, eat a vegetarian meal, and set off early on the road to the Western Heaven.' Old Gao arranged the table and seats, inviting Sanzang to sit in the place of honor;行者與八戒坐於左右兩傍；Wukong and Bajie sat to the left and right;諸親下坐。the assembled relatives took the lower seats.高老把素酒開樽，滿斟一杯，奠了天地，然後奉與三藏。Old Gao opened a jar of vegetarian wine, filled a cup to the brim, poured a libation to Heaven and Earth, and then offered it to Sanzang.三藏道：「不瞞太公說，貧僧是胎裡素，自幼兒不吃葷。」老高道：「因知老師清素，不曾敢動葷。Sanzang said, 'I won't hide it from you, Squire — this poor monk was born a vegetarian in the womb, and has never eaten meat since childhood.' Old Gao said, 'Knowing that you, venerable teacher, keep a pure vegetarian diet, we would not have dared serve meat.此酒也是素的，請一杯不妨。」三藏道：「也不敢用酒，酒是我僧家第一戒者。」悟能慌了道：「師父，我自持齋，卻不曾斷酒。」悟空道：「老孫雖量窄，吃不上罈把，卻也不曾斷酒。」三藏道：「既如此，你兄弟們吃些素酒也罷，只是不許醉飲誤事。」遂而他兩個接了頭鍾。This wine too is a vegetarian wine — a cup should be no trouble to take.' Sanzang said, 'I dare not drink wine either — wine is the very first commandment forbidden to us monks.' Wuneng said in alarm, 'Master, I have kept the fast myself, but I have never given up wine.' Wukong said, 'Old Sun's capacity is narrow — I can't drink even a jugful — but I too have never sworn off wine.' Sanzang said, 'Since that is so, you two brothers may drink a little vegetarian wine, only you must not let drunkenness make you neglect your duties.' Thereupon the two of them took the first cups.各人俱照舊坐下，擺下素齋。Everyone then sat back down as before, and the vegetarian feast was laid out.說不盡那杯盤之盛，品物之豐。Words cannot tell of the splendor of the cups and dishes, or the abundance of the fare.

高老见这等去邪归正，更十分喜悦，遂命家僮安排筵宴，酬谢唐僧。八戒上前扯住老高道：「爷，请我拙荆出来拜见公公、伯伯，如何？」行者笑道：「贤弟，你既入了沙门，做了和尚，从今后，再莫题起那『拙荆』的话说。世间只有个火居道士，那里有个火居的和尚？我们且来叙了坐次，吃顿斋饭，赶早儿往西天走路。」高老儿摆了桌席，请三藏上坐；行者与八戒坐于左右两傍；诸亲下坐。高老把素酒开樽，满斟一杯，奠了天地，然后奉与三藏。三藏道：「不瞒太公说，贫僧是胎里素，自幼儿不吃荤。」老高道：「因知老师清素，不曾敢动荤。此酒也是素的，请一杯不妨。」三藏道：「也不敢用酒，酒是我僧家第一戒者。」悟能慌了道：「师父，我自持斋，却不曾断酒。」悟空道：「老孙虽量窄，吃不上坛把，却也不曾断酒。」三藏道：「既如此，你兄弟们吃些素酒也罢，只是不许醉饮误事。」遂而他两个接了头钟。各人俱照旧坐下，摆下素斋。说不尽那杯盘之盛，品物之丰。

師徒們宴罷，老高將一紅漆丹盤，拿出二百兩散碎金銀，奉三位長老為途中之費；When the master and his disciples had finished the feast, old Gao brought out a red-lacquered tray holding two hundred taels of loose gold and silver, and presented it to the three elders as travel expenses;又將三領綿布褊衫為上蓋之衣。and also three cotton robes as outer garments.三藏道：「我們是行腳僧，遇莊化飯，逢處求齋，怎敢受金銀財帛？」行者近前，掄開手抓了一把，叫：「高才，昨日累你引我師父，今日招了一個徒弟，無物謝你，把這些碎金碎銀，權作帶領錢，拿了去買草鞋穿。Sanzang said, 'We are wandering monks who beg for food from village to village and seek alms wherever we go — how could we dare accept gold, silver, or riches?' Wukong stepped forward, swept out his hand, and grabbed a handful, calling out, 'Gao Cai, yesterday you took the trouble to lead my master here, and today I've gained a fellow disciple — I have nothing to thank you with, so take this loose gold and silver as a guide's fee, and go buy yourself some straw sandals to wear.以後但有妖精，多作成我幾個，還有謝你處哩。」高才接了，叩頭謝賞。From now on, whenever there are demons about, send a few more my way — I'll have more occasion to thank you yet.' Gao Cai accepted it and kowtowed his thanks for the reward.老高又道：「師父們既不受金銀，望將這粗衣笑納，聊表寸心。」三藏又道：「我出家人，若受了一絲之賄，千劫難修。Old Gao said again, 'Since you masters will not accept gold or silver, I hope you will graciously accept these coarse garments, as a small token of my regard.' Sanzang said again, 'As a monk who has left the household life, if I accept even a thread's worth of bribe, it would be difficult to cultivate the Way through a thousand kalpas.只是把席上吃不了的餅果，帶些去做乾糧足矣。」It will suffice simply to take along some of the cakes and fruit left over from the table, to serve as dry provisions.'

师徒们宴罢，老高将一红漆丹盘，拿出二百两散碎金银，奉三位长老为途中之费；又将三领绵布褊衫为上盖之衣。三藏道：「我们是行脚僧，遇庄化饭，逢处求斋，怎敢受金银财帛？」行者近前，抡开手抓了一把，叫：「高才，昨日累你引我师父，今日招了一个徒弟，无物谢你，把这些碎金碎银，权作带领钱，拿了去买草鞋穿。以后但有妖精，多作成我几个，还有谢你处哩。」高才接了，叩头谢赏。老高又道：「师父们既不受金银，望将这粗衣笑纳，聊表寸心。」三藏又道：「我出家人，若受了一丝之贿，千劫难修。只是把席上吃不了的饼果，带些去做干粮足矣。」

八戒在傍邊道：「師父、師兄，你們不要便罷，我與他家做了這幾年女婿，就是掛腳糧也該三石哩。──丈人啊，我的直裰，昨晚被師兄扯破了，與我一件青錦袈裟；Bajie, standing to the side, said, 'Master, elder brother, if you don't want anything, that's up to you — but I've been this family's son-in-law for several years now, and even just my board and lodging should amount to three piculs of grain. Father-in-law, my robe was torn last night by my elder brother — give me a blue brocade cassock instead;鞋子綻了，與我一雙好新鞋子。」高老聞言，不敢不與，隨買一雙新鞋，將一領褊衫，換下舊時衣物。my shoes are worn out, so give me a good new pair.' Hearing this, old Gao did not dare refuse, and at once bought a new pair of shoes, and gave him a robe, exchanging them for his old, worn clothes.那八戒搖搖擺擺，對高老唱個喏道：「上覆丈母、大姨、二姨並姨夫、姑舅諸親：我今日去做和尚了，不及面辭，休怪。Bajie, swaggering about, made a bow to old Gao and said, 'Please convey my regards to my mother-in-law, my elder and younger sisters-in-law, my brothers-in-law, and all my aunts, uncles, and cousins — today I am off to become a monk, and cannot take leave of them in person, so please don't blame me.丈人啊，你還好生看待我渾家，只怕我們取不成經時，好來還俗，照舊與你做女婿過活。」行者喝道：「夯貨，卻莫胡說。」八戒道：「不是胡說，只恐一時間有些兒差池，卻不是和尚誤了做，老婆誤了娶，兩下裡都耽擱了？」Father-in-law, please look after my wife well — in case we fail to obtain the scriptures, I can return to lay life and go on being your son-in-law as before.' Wukong shouted, 'You lump, don't talk such nonsense!' Bajie said, 'It's not nonsense — I'm only afraid that if something should go wrong somewhere along the way, wouldn't it be a case of failing both to be a proper monk and to properly marry a wife, and losing out on both sides?'

八戒在傍边道：「师父、师兄，你们不要便罢，我与他家做了这几年女婿，就是挂脚粮也该三石哩。──丈人啊，我的直裰，昨晚被师兄扯破了，与我一件青锦袈裟；鞋子绽了，与我一双好新鞋子。」高老闻言，不敢不与，随买一双新鞋，将一领褊衫，换下旧时衣物。那八戒摇摇摆摆，对高老唱个喏道：「上覆丈母、大姨、二姨并姨夫、姑舅诸亲：我今日去做和尚了，不及面辞，休怪。丈人啊，你还好生看待我浑家，只怕我们取不成经时，好来还俗，照旧与你做女婿过活。」行者喝道：「夯货，却莫胡说。」八戒道：「不是胡说，只恐一时间有些儿差池，却不是和尚误了做，老婆误了娶，两下里都耽搁了？」

三藏道：「少題閑話，我們趕早兒去來。」遂此收拾了一擔行李，八戒擔著；Sanzang said, 'Enough of this idle talk — let us set off early.' So they packed up a load of baggage, which Bajie carried on a shoulder pole;背了白馬，三藏騎著；the white horse was saddled, and Sanzang rode it;行者肩擔鐵棒，前面引路。Wukong shouldered his iron staff and led the way in front.一行三眾，辭別高老及眾親友，投西而去。The three of them together took leave of old Gao and all the relatives and friends, and set off toward the west.有詩為證。There is a poem to prove it.詩曰：The poem reads:

三藏道：「少题闲话，我们赶早儿去来。」遂此收拾了一担行李，八戒担著；背了白马，三藏骑著；行者肩担铁棒，前面引路。一行三众，辞别高老及众亲友，投西而去。有诗为证。诗曰：

三眾進西路途，有個月平穩。The three travelers journeyed westward, and for about a month the road was smooth and uneventful.行過了烏斯藏界，猛擡頭見一座高山。Having passed through the borders of Wusizang, they suddenly looked up and saw a high mountain.三藏停鞭勒馬道：「悟空、悟能，前面山高，須索仔細仔細。」八戒道：「沒事。Sanzang reined in his horse and said, 'Wukong, Wuneng, the mountain ahead is high — we must be very careful.' Bajie said, 'It's nothing.'這山喚做浮屠山，山中有一個烏巢禪師，在此修行，老豬也曾會他。」三藏道：「他有些甚麼勾當？」八戒道：「他倒也有些道行。This mountain is called Futu Mountain. In it lives a Chan Master named Wuchao, who cultivates himself here — old Pig has met him before.' Sanzang said, 'What sort of business does he engage in?' Bajie said, 'He does have a fair amount of spiritual attainment.'他曾勸我跟他修行，我不曾去罷了。」師徒們說著話，不多時，到了山上。He once urged me to stay and cultivate with him, but I never went — that's all there was to it.' As master and disciples talked, before long they reached the mountain.好山！What a fine mountain!但見那：Behold:

三众进西路途，有个月平稳。行过了乌斯藏界，猛抬头见一座高山。三藏停鞭勒马道：「悟空、悟能，前面山高，须索仔细仔细。」八戒道：「没事。这山唤做浮屠山，山中有一个乌巢禅师，在此修行，老猪也曾会他。」三藏道：「他有些甚么勾当？」八戒道：「他倒也有些道行。他曾劝我跟他修行，我不曾去罢了。」师徒们说著话，不多时，到了山上。好山！但见那：

那師父在馬上遙觀，見香檜樹前有一柴草窩，左邊有麋鹿啣花，右邊有山猴獻果，樹梢頭有青鸞、彩鳳齊鳴，玄鶴、錦雞咸集。The master, gazing from atop his horse, saw before a fragrant cypress tree a nest of brushwood and straw; on the left a musk deer held flowers in its mouth, on the right a mountain monkey offered up fruit, and at the treetop blue simurghs and colorful phoenixes sang together, while black cranes and brocade pheasants had all gathered.八戒指道：「那不是烏巢禪師？」三藏縱馬加鞭，直至樹下。Bajie pointed and said, 'Isn't that Chan Master Wuchao?' Sanzang urged his horse forward with a flick of the whip, straight up to beneath the tree.

那师父在马上遥观，见香桧树前有一柴草窝，左边有麋鹿啣花，右边有山猴献果，树梢头有青鸾、彩凤齐鸣，玄鹤、锦鸡咸集。八戒指道：「那不是乌巢禅师？」三藏纵马加鞭，直至树下。

卻說那禪師見他三眾前來，即便離了巢穴，跳下樹來。The Chan Master, seeing the three of them approach, at once left his nest and leapt down from the tree.三藏下馬奉拜，那禪師用手攙道：「聖僧請起。Sanzang dismounted and bowed reverently; the Chan Master reached out a hand to help him up, saying, 'Holy monk, please rise.失迎，失迎。」八戒道：「老禪師，作揖了。」禪師驚問道：「你是福陵山豬剛鬣，怎麼有此大緣，得與聖僧同行？」八戒道：「前年蒙觀音菩薩勸善，願隨他做個徒弟。」禪師大喜道：「好，好，好！」又指定行者，問道：「此位是誰？」行者笑道：「這老禪怎麼認得他，倒不認得我？」禪師道：「因少識耳。」三藏道：「他是我的大徒弟孫悟空。」禪師陪笑道：「欠禮，欠禮。」Forgive me for failing to welcome you properly.' Bajie said, 'Old Chan Master, greetings.' The Chan Master asked in surprise, 'You are Zhu Ganglie of Fuling Mountain — how have you come to have such great fortune as to travel together with a holy monk?' Bajie said, 'The year before last I was persuaded to virtue by the Bodhisattva Guanyin, and vowed to become his disciple.' The Chan Master, greatly pleased, said, 'Good, good, good!' Then, pointing at Wukong, he asked, 'Who is this one?' Wukong laughed and said, 'How is it this old Chan Master recognizes him, but doesn't recognize me?' The Chan Master said, 'It is only that I have less acquaintance with you.' Sanzang said, 'He is my eldest disciple, Sun Wukong.' The Chan Master said with an apologetic smile, 'I have failed to show proper courtesy, I have failed to show proper courtesy.'

却说那禅师见他三众前来，即便离了巢穴，跳下树来。三藏下马奉拜，那禅师用手搀道：「圣僧请起。失迎，失迎。」八戒道：「老禅师，作揖了。」禅师惊问道：「你是福陵山猪刚鬣，怎么有此大缘，得与圣僧同行？」八戒道：「前年蒙观音菩萨劝善，愿随他做个徒弟。」禅师大喜道：「好，好，好！」又指定行者，问道：「此位是谁？」行者笑道：「这老禅怎么认得他，倒不认得我？」禅师道：「因少识耳。」三藏道：「他是我的大徒弟孙悟空。」禅师陪笑道：「欠礼，欠礼。」

三藏再拜：「請問西天大雷音寺還在那裡？」禪師道：「遠哩，遠哩。Sanzang bowed again and said, 'May I ask, how much further is the Great Thunderclap Monastery in the Western Heaven?' The Chan Master said, 'Far, very far.只是路多虎豹，難行。」三藏慇懃致意，再問：「路途果有多遠？」禪師道：「路途雖遠，終須有到之日，卻只是魔瘴難消。Only the road is full of tigers and leopards, and hard to travel.' Sanzang earnestly pressed his regards and asked again, 'Just how far is the road, in fact?' The Chan Master said, 'Though the road is far, there will surely come a day when you arrive; it is only that the demonic miasmas along the way are hard to dispel.我有《多心經》一卷，凡五十四句，共計二百七十字。I have a scroll of the Heart Sutra, in fifty-four lines, two hundred and seventy characters in all.若遇魔瘴之處，但念此經，自無傷害。」三藏拜伏於地懇求，那禪師遂口誦傳之。Whenever you encounter a place of demonic miasma, simply recite this sutra, and you will naturally come to no harm.' Sanzang prostrated himself on the ground and earnestly entreated him, and the Chan Master then recited it aloud and transmitted it to him.經云：The sutra says:

三藏再拜：「请问西天大雷音寺还在那里？」禅师道：「远哩，远哩。只是路多虎豹，难行。」三藏慇懃致意，再问：「路途果有多远？」禅师道：「路途虽远，终须有到之日，却只是魔瘴难消。我有《多心经》一卷，凡五十四句，共计二百七十字。若遇魔瘴之处，但念此经，自无伤害。」三藏拜伏于地恳求，那禅师遂口诵传之。经云：

此時唐朝法師本有根源，耳聞一遍《多心經》，即能記憶，至今傳世。At that time the Tang monk already possessed the root of wisdom, so that hearing the Duoxin Jing (Heart Sutra) recited but once, he could remember it entirely, and it has been handed down to this very day.此乃修真之總經，作佛之會門也。This is the master scripture of cultivating truth, the very gateway to becoming a Buddha.

此时唐朝法师本有根源，耳闻一遍《多心经》，即能记忆，至今传世。此乃修真之总经，作佛之会门也。

那禪師傳了經文，踏雲光，要上烏巢而去。Having transmitted the scripture text, the Chan Master trod on a beam of cloud-light, meaning to return up to Wuchao.被三藏又扯住奉告，定要問個西去的路程端的。But Sanzang caught hold of him again and begged him most respectfully, determined to ask him the exact particulars of the road going west.那禪師笑云：The Chan Master said with a laugh:

那禅师传了经文，踏云光，要上乌巢而去。被三藏又扯住奉告，定要问个西去的路程端的。那禅师笑云：

行者聞言，冷笑道：「我們去，不必問他，問我便了。」三藏還不解其意。Hearing this, Xingzhe gave a cold laugh and said, "When we go, there's no need to ask him — just ask me." Sanzang still did not grasp his meaning.那禪師化作金光，徑上烏巢而去。The Chan Master turned into a beam of golden light and went straight up to Wuchao.長老往上拜謝，行者心中大怒，舉鐵棒望上亂搗，只見蓮花生萬朵，祥霧護千層。The elder bowed upward in gratitude, but Xingzhe was seized with fury and raised his iron rod to jab wildly upward; yet all that appeared were ten thousand lotus blossoms blooming and a thousand layers of auspicious mist sheltering the place.行者縱有攪海翻江力，莫想挽著烏巢一縷籐。Even though Xingzhe had the strength to churn the seas and overturn rivers, he could not hope to catch hold of so much as a single strand of vine of Wuchao's nest.三藏見了，扯住行者道：「悟空，這樣一個菩薩，你搗他窩巢怎的？」行者道：「他罵了我兄弟兩個一場去了。」三藏道：「他講的西天路徑，何嘗罵你？」行者道：「你那裡曉得？Seeing this, Sanzang caught hold of Xingzhe and said, "Wukong, he is such a bodhisattva — why would you go smashing his nest?"
