At Gao Village the Pilgrims Meet Zhu Bajie

018Chapter 18

Xingzhe took his leave of the Bodhisattva, brought his cloud down, hung the cassock on the sandalwood tree, drew out his cudgel, and struck his way into the Black Wind Cave — but there was not a single little demon left inside. It turned out that when they had seen the Bodhisattva appear and the old monster rolled about on the ground overcome, they had all scattered and fled in haste.Xingzhe grew all the more violent: he piled dry firewood at every one of the gates, layer upon layer, and set it ablaze from front to back all at once, turning the Black Wind Cave into a Red Wind Cave. Then he took up the cassock, rode his auspicious light, and turned straight back north.

Now, Sanzang, watching for Xingzhe who had not returned though the time was long past, grew quite suspicious in his heart: he did not know whether the request to the Bodhisattva had failed, or whether Xingzhe had made some excuse and run off.:「。」Just as he was lost in wild guesses and random thoughts, he suddenly saw brilliant colored mists in the middle of the sky, and Xingzhe dropped down before the steps and knelt, saying, "Master, the cassock has come back." Sanzang was overjoyed.:「。」:「西?」The monks too were all delighted, saying, "Good, good! Our lives are whole again from this day on." Sanzang took the cassock and said, "Wukong, when you left this morning, you agreed you would be back by the time the noon meal was done — how is it you return only now, with the sun in the west?" Xingzhe related in full the whole affair of inviting the Bodhisattva, working transformations, and subduing the demon.:「。」:「When Sanzang heard this, he set up an incense table, bowed in worship toward the south, and then said, "Disciple, now that we have the Buddha's robe back, let us pack our bundles quickly and be off." Xingzhe said, "No hurry, no hurry.。」:「It is nearly evening today, not a time for travel — let us wait until tomorrow morning to set out." The monks all knelt down together and said, "Elder Sun speaks well.西。」:「。」First, it is late in the day; second, we have some vows we made, and now that all is safely settled and the treasure recovered, let us fulfill our vows, invite you gentlemen to share in the blessing feast, and see you off west again early tomorrow." Xingzhe said, "Just so, just so." And you should have seen those monks empty out their purses to the very bottom, each contributing what remained of the goods snatched from the fire, preparing a vegetarian feast, burning paper offerings for peace and safety, and chanting several scrolls of scripture to dispel calamity and undo misfortune. That evening's affairs were thus concluded.

The next morning, once the horse had been groomed and saddled and the bundles packed, they went out the gate, and the monks saw them far off before turning back.Xingzhe led the way as they went, and it was just that season of spring's warmth — behold:

Master and disciples traveled some five or seven days over desolate roads, and one day, as the sky was turning to dusk, they saw in the distance a village of houses.:「宿?」:「。」Sanzang said, "Wukong, look — there seems to be a manor near that wall over there. Let us go and ask to lodge there for the night, and set out again tomorrow — what do you say?" Xingzhe said, "Wait while I go and see whether it bodes good or ill, and then decide." The master reined in the silk bridle, and Xingzhe fixed his eyes to look — and indeed it was:

When Xingzhe had finished looking, he said, "Master, please go on. It is surely a village of good people, and just the place to lodge for the night." The elder urged the white horse on, and soon they reached the mouth of the village street. There he also saw a young man, his head wrapped in cotton cloth, wearing a blue jacket, carrying an umbrella and a pack on his back, his trousers tucked up and bound, his feet in a pair of three-eared straw sandals, striding out of the street in great haste, full of vigor.:「Xingzhe reached out and caught hold of him, saying, "Where are you going??」:「?」:「。 Let me ask you something: what place is this?" The man, straining hard to break free, shouted, "There's no one at home on my manor — am I the only one fit to be asked for directions?" Xingzhe said with a smile, "Don't be angry, benefactor. 'Give others convenience, and you give yourself convenience.' What harm is there in telling me the name of this place?。」:「I might even be able to relieve your troubles." The man, unable to break free, jumped about in fury and said, "What rotten luck, what rotten luck.。」 I can't even bear the wrongful anger from my own household, and now I run into this bald-headed fellow, who makes me suffer his ill temper besides." Xingzhe said, "If you have the skill, pry my hand open, and then you may go." The man twisted this way and that, but however he twisted he could not break free — it was as though an iron clamp held him fast.Furious, he dropped his bundle and threw down his umbrella, and both hands came at Xingzhe like a shower of rain, trying to claw him.Xingzhe held the luggage steady with one hand and fended the man off with the other, and however the man struggled, he simply could not lay a hand on him.Xingzhe held on all the tighter, until the man was so exasperated he crackled and roared like thunder.:「Sanzang said, "Wukong, is there not someone else coming over there?Ask him instead — why must you keep holding on to this one?。」:「。」:「Let him go." Xingzhe laughed and said, "Master, you don't understand. If we ask someone else it's no fun — it's only by asking this fellow that there's any business to be had." The man, held fast by Xingzhe and unable to break free, had no choice but to speak, saying, "This place lies within the borders of the kingdom of Wusizang, and is called Gao Old Manor.More than half the households in this village bear the surname Gao, and that is why it is called Gao Old Manor.。」:「Now let me go." Xingzhe said further, "Dressed as you are, you're not one out for a short errand nearby.。」Tell me truly where you're headed and just what business you're on, and then I'll let you go."

:「The man, having no other choice, told him the truth: "I am a servant of Squire Gao, and my name is Gao Cai.My master has a youngest daughter, just twenty years of age, who has never yet been given in marriage.婿Three years ago she was taken by a monster, and that monster has served as son-in-law in our house for these three years now.:『。』退My master is displeased about it, saying, 'Having a monster as a son-in-law is no proper arrangement: first, it ruins the family's good name; second, there's no in-law family to exchange visits with.' He has long wanted to send the monster packing.退But the monster will not be sent away — instead he has shut the daughter up in the rear apartments, and for nearly half a year now has not let her out to see anyone in the household. My master gave me a few taels of silver and told me to seek out a master of the Law to catch the monster.I have not rested these past days — one after another, I have engaged some three or four men, but they were all useless monks and incompetent Daoists, none able to subdue that monster.Just now my master scolded me soundly, saying I could not manage the task.He gave me another five mace of silver for travel expenses and told me to go again and find a good master of the Law to subdue him.I never expected to run into you, you plague of a star, holding me up and making me late on my errand — that's why I'm suffering aggravation both inside and out, and had no choice but to shout at you.I didn't expect you'd have some skill besides — I couldn't get free of you, and so I've told you the plain truth.。」:「Now let me go on my way." Xingzhe said, "This is your good fortune — I happen to be in this very trade, and this is just the sort of match made in heaven. You need not travel any farther, nor spend any more silver. We are none of your useless monks or incompetent Daoists — in truth we have some real skill, and are well practiced at catching monsters.:『。』西。」:「This is exactly the case of 'first, it does the physician a favor, and second, it cures the eyes as well.' Trouble yourself to go back and report to your master that we are the imperial brother-monks sent by decree from the Land of the East, bound for the Western Heaven to worship the Buddha and seek the scriptures, and that we are well able to subdue demons and bind monsters." Gao Cai said, "Don't you go and mislead me.?」:「。」:「。」I am already a man full of anger, and if you deceive me falsely, and have no real skill and cannot catch that monster, will it not bring more trouble down on me besides?" Xingzhe said, "I guarantee it will not delay you — just lead me to your master's gate." The man, having no other way out, truly picked up his bundle and umbrella again, turned about, and led master and disciples to the gate, saying, "You two elders, please sit a moment on the mounting-block, while I go in and report to my master." Only then did Xingzhe release his hand, set down the load, and hold the horse, while master and disciples stood and waited by the gate.

Gao Cai went in through the main gate and made straight for the central hall, where he happened to run right into Squire Gao.:「The squire scolded him, saying, "You uncouth brute of a creature!?」:「Why haven't you gone to find someone, and instead come back again — for what?" Gao Cai set down the bundle and umbrella and said, "Let me report to my master: your servant had only just gone out to the street corner when suddenly I ran into two monks, one riding a horse and one carrying a shoulder-pole.He caught hold of me and would not let go, asking me where I was going.I refused again and again to tell him, but he pestered me so that I could not get free, and in the end I told him all about my master's affair, from start to finish.。」 :「He was overjoyed at this, and wants to catch that monster for us." Old Gao said, "Where does he come from?" Gao Cai said, "He says he is the imperial brother-monk sent by decree from the Land of the East, on his way to the Western Heaven to worship the Buddha and seek the scriptures." The squire said, "If he is a monk come from so far away, he surely has some real skill. ?」:「。」Where is he now?" Gao Cai said, "He is waiting outside the gate."

:「。」The squire at once changed his clothes and went out with Gao Cai to greet them, calling out, "Elders!" When Sanzang heard this, he turned quickly, and already the man stood before him. The old man wore a black damask kerchief, a scallion-white Sichuan brocade robe, a pair of calfskin boots the color of unhulled rice, and a black-green sash at his waist. He came out smiling and greeting them warmly, saying, "Greetings, you two elders." Sanzang returned the courtesy, but Xingzhe stood there without moving.便Seeing how fierce and ugly Xingzhe's face was, the old man did not dare exchange bows with him.:「?」:「Xingzhe said, "Why don't you bow to old Monkey?" The old man was rather frightened, and called out to Gao Cai, "Isn't this little fellow of yours going to be the death of me?婿?」:「At home I already have an ugly-faced, monstrous-headed son-in-law I can't get rid of — why have you brought this Thunder God here to torment me as well?" Xingzhe said, "Old Gao, you've lived to such a great age for nothing, and still you don't understand things. If you judge people purely by their looks, you're making a clean mistake of it.I, old Monkey, may be ugly, but I have some real ability. If I catch the monster for your household, seize the demon, capture your son-in-law, and restore your daughter to you, that would be a fine thing indeed — why must you go on and on about looks?" Hearing this, the squire, trembling, could only force himself to summon some spirit and say, "Please, come in." Seeing the invitation, Xingzhe then led the white horse, had Gao Cai carry the luggage, and went in with Sanzang.退Paying no mind to propriety, he tied the horse to a pillar of the open hall, dragged over a lacquered armchair with the shine worn off, and asked the master to sit down. Then he dragged over another chair and sat down beside him.:「。」:「。」Old Gao said, "This little elder is quite at home here, isn't he." Xingzhe said, "If you'll let me stay half a year, I'll be even more at home."

Once seated, Old Gao asked, "Just now my young servant said you two elders are from the Land of the East?" Sanzang said, "That is so. This poor monk, by imperial command, is bound for the Western Heaven to worship the Buddha and seek the scriptures. Passing by your esteemed manor, I have made bold to ask lodging for the night, and will set out again early tomorrow." Old Gao said, "If you two only wished to borrow lodging, how is it you speak of catching monsters?" Xingzhe said, "Since we're only lodging here, we might as well catch a monster or two for sport while we're at it.?」:「May I ask how many monsters your esteemed household has?" Old Gao said, "Heaven help me! :「。」:「As if there weren't plenty already — this one monster of a son-in-law alone has worn me to exhaustion." Xingzhe said, "Tell me the whole story of this monster from beginning to end, how great his powers are, so that I may catch him for you." Old Gao said, "On this manor of ours, from ancient times to now, we never knew what it was to have ghosts or goblins or evil spirits working mischief. It is only that I, unlucky old fool, never had a son, and bore only three daughters: the eldest named Xianglan, the second named Yulan, and the third named Cuilan. The first two were married off since childhood to families in this very village. Only the youngest I meant to keep, wanting to take in a son-in-law to live with us and carry on the household, to be a son-in-law who would support us in old age, hold up the gate and prop the door, and work and take his turn at duties. Then unexpectedly, three years ago, there came a fellow whose looks were actually rather fine and refined.婿He said he was from a family on Fuling Mountain, surnamed Zhu, with no parents above him and no brothers below, and that he wished to become someone's son-in-law.Seeing that he was a man with no roots and no ties, I, old fool, took him in as son-in-law.Once he entered our gate, he was actually quite diligent and careful: he plowed and harrowed the fields without needing any ox or tool;he reaped the harvest without needing knife or flail;morning and evening he came and went, and truly he was quite good.。」:「?」:「Only there is this one thing — he has some ability to change his face and form." Xingzhe said, "Changes how?" Old Gao said, "When he first came he was a swarthy, stout fellow, but afterward he turned into a fool with a long snout and big ears, with a streak of bristly mane at the back of his head, his body coarse and frightful to look at, his head and face just like a pig's.And his appetite is enormous besides: at one sitting he needs three or five pecks of rice, and even for his morning snack he needs a hundred or so griddle cakes to be satisfied. It's a mercy that he still eats only vegetarian food;便。」:「。」:「if he were also to eat meat and drink wine, then all this property and estate of mine, old fool that I am, would be eaten clean away within half a year." Sanzang said, "It is only because he can work that he can eat so much." Old Gao said, "The eating is a small matter. Now he has also learned to summon the wind, riding clouds and mist, moving stones and flying sand, so that he has frightened my whole household and the neighbors on both sides, and none of us can live in peace. And he has shut my little daughter Cuilan up in the rear apartments, and for a good half year now we have not even seen her face, and do not know whether she is alive or dead. Because of this we know he is a monster, and wish to engage a master of the Law to drive him out."

:「Xingzhe said, "What difficulty is there in this?退?」:「Old man, set your mind at ease — this very night I guarantee to catch him for you, and make him write out a divorce paper and give your daughter back to you. How would that be?" Old Gao was overjoyed and said, "It is not that taking him in as son-in-law was so serious a matter in itself, but think how much good reputation it has cost me, how many kinsmen it has estranged. If only you can catch him, what need is there of any paper?。」:「I only beg you to root him out for me entirely." Xingzhe said, "Easy, easy.。」By nightfall you shall see the outcome, good or ill."

The old man was overjoyed, and had the tables and chairs wiped down and a vegetarian feast set out.:「After the meal, as evening drew on, the old man asked, "What weapons will you need? How many men should attend you?。」:「。」:「?」:「Best to prepare them early." Xingzhe said, "I have my own weapon." The old man said, "You two have only that monk's staff of yours — how could that staff strike down the monster?" Xingzhe then drew out from his ear something like an embroidery needle, held it twirling in his hand, and with a shake against the wind it became an iron rod as thick as a rice bowl, banded with gold. Holding it up before Old Gao, he said, "Look at this rod — how does it compare with the weapons of your household??」:「?」:「Could this strike down the monster?" Old Gao then said, "Since you have the weapon, do you need men to go with you?" Xingzhe said, "I need no men — I only need a few elders of high age and virtue to sit and keep my master pleasant company while I slip away from him.。」When I've caught the monster and brought him back for everyone to see, I'll root him out for you completely." The old man then called his house servants and invited several relatives and friends.:「。」In a short while they had all arrived, and once the greetings were done, Xingzhe said, "Master, set your mind at ease and sit tight — old Monkey is off now."

:「。」You should have seen him — gripping his iron rod, he pulled Old Gao along and said, "Take me to see the place in the rear apartments where the monster lives." Old Gao then led him to the door of the rear quarters.:「。」:「。」:「Xingzhe said, "Go and fetch the key." Old Gao said, "Just look and see — if a key were of any use, would I have needed to ask you?" Xingzhe laughed and said, "Old man, for all your years, you don't know a joke when you hear one.。」I was only teasing you with that, and you took it seriously." He stepped forward, felt about, and found it was in fact a lock cast in bronze. In his fury he gave the golden-hooped rod one thrust, and smashed the door panels open, and inside it was pitch black.:「?」:「!」:「。」Xingzhe said, "Old Gao, call out to your daughter and see if she's in there." The old man, steeling his courage, called out, "Third Daughter!" The daughter, recognizing her father's voice, answered in a faint and feeble tone, "Father, I'm here." Xingzhe opened his golden eyes and looked carefully into the darkness — and what do you suppose she looked like?Behold:

She came forward, and seeing Old Gao, caught hold of him and threw her arms about him, weeping aloud.:「Xingzhe said, "Don't cry yet, don't cry yet.?」:「Let me ask you — where has the monster gone?" The girl said, "I don't know where he goes. These days, he leaves at dawn and does not return until night.Off in clouds and mist, coming and going, I never know where.退。」:「Because he knows Father wants to drive him away, he is always on his guard, and that's why he leaves in darkness and returns at dawn." Xingzhe said, "Say no more.Old man, take your dear daughter to the front apartments and talk over old times together at leisure — let old Monkey wait here for him.If he does not come, do not blame me;。」if he does come, I will surely root out the evil for you, cutting the weeds down to the roots." Old Gao, full of joy, led his daughter away toward the front.

Xingzhe then worked his magic powers, shook himself, and changed into the very likeness of the girl, sitting alone in the room to wait for the monster. Before long, a gust of wind arose, truly moving stones and flying sand.A fine wind indeed:

When that gust of wild wind had passed, there in the midst of the sky came a monster, and indeed he was born ugly: a black face with short bristles, a long snout and big ears;穿he wore a robe of shuttle-woven cloth that was neither quite black nor quite blue, and bound at the waist with a flowered kerchief.:「。」Xingzhe laughed inwardly, saying, "So this is the sort of business it is." Being the fine fellow he was, he did not go to meet him nor question him, but lay on the bed pretending to be ill, moaning and groaning without pause. The monster, unable to tell true from false, walked into the room, threw his arms about her at once, and tried to kiss her.:「。」使Xingzhe laughed inwardly, saying, "So he really means to trifle with old Monkey." He at once used a grappling hold, took hold of the monster's long snout, and gave him what is called a little trip. With one twist of the head he flung him down, and the monster tumbled with a thud off the bed.:「The monster scrambled up, and holding onto the edge of the bed, said, 'Sister, why are you cross with me today??」:「。」:「?」:「I suppose I came too late?' Xingzhe said, 'Not cross, not cross.' The monster said, 'If you're not cross with me, why did you throw me down like that?' Xingzhe said, 'Why are you so ill-bred, grabbing me to kiss you the moment you arrive?I've been feeling a bit unwell today;便if I were as well as usual, I would have gotten up and opened the door to wait for you.。」You'd better take off your clothes and go to sleep.' The monster, not catching her meaning, really went to undress.Xingzhe jumped up and sat down on the chamber pot.:「The monster went back to the bed as before and felt around, but found no one there, and called out, 'Sister, where have you gone?。」:「。」Please take off your clothes and come to sleep.' Xingzhe said, 'You go to sleep first, let me go relieve myself.' The monster did indeed undress and get into bed first.

:「。」:「Xingzhe suddenly heaved a sigh and said, 'My luck has run low.' The monster said, 'Why are you upset? How could your luck have run low?Since I came to your household, though I've eaten your food and drink, I haven't eaten it for nothing: I've swept the floors and cleared the ditches for your family, carried bricks and hauled tiles, tamped earth and built walls, plowed the fields and harrowed the land, sown wheat and planted rice seedlings, and helped build up the household estate.穿?」:「Now you wear silk brocade on your body and gold ornaments on your head, you have flowers and fruit to enjoy in all four seasons and vegetables cooked for you at every one of the eight festivals — what is there that's not to your liking, that you sigh so heavily, saying your luck has run low?' Xingzhe said, 'That's not how it is.。」 Today my parents, from over the wall, threw bricks and roof tiles at me, and scolded and beat me quite severely.' The monster said, 'Why did they beat and scold you?' Xingzhe said, 'They said that since you and I became husband and wife, you're a son-in-law under their roof, yet you have no manners at all.。」:「Such an ugly-faced fellow — he cannot even meet his uncles by marriage, nor be seen by relatives, and moreover no one knows how you come and go on clouds and mist, or truly which family you're from, what your surname and given name are; you have ruined their good name and disgraced their family reputation, and that's why they beat and scolded me so, which is why I'm troubled.' The monster said, 'Though I am somewhat ugly, if I wanted to be handsome, that wouldn't be hard either. When I first came, I explained everything to him, and only after he agreed did he take me in as a son-in-law.Why bring up this talk again today? My home is at Cloud Ladder Cave on Fuling Mountain.I took my surname from my appearance, so my surname is Zhu, and my formal name is Zhu Ganglie.便。」If he comes to ask you again, just tell him this.'

:「Xingzhe secretly rejoiced, thinking, 'This monster is quite honest — without even having to use torture, he's confessed so clearly.。」:「。」:「Now that I have his place and name, no matter what, I'll catch him.' Xingzhe said, 'He wants to invite a Master of the Law to come and catch you.' The monster laughed and said, 'Go to sleep, go to sleep, pay him no mind.I have the thirty-six transformations of the Heavenly Ladle, and a nine-toothed rake — what do I have to fear from any Master of the Law, monk, or Daoist priest?。」:「。」:「。」:「 ?」:「。」Even if your old father were devout enough to invite down the Patriarch Who Quells Demons of the Nine Heavens, I've been acquainted with him before too, and he wouldn't dare do anything to me.' Xingzhe said, 'He said he wants to invite the Great Sage Equal to Heaven, surnamed Sun, who caused great havoc in Heaven five hundred years ago, to come and catch you.' On hearing this name, the monster grew somewhat afraid and said, 'If that's the case, then I'd better leave — the two of us can't be a couple anymore.' Xingzhe said, 'Why would you leave just like that?' The monster said, 'You don't know — that Bimawen who caused havoc in Heaven has quite some ability. I'm only afraid I couldn't get the better of him, and would lose my reputation and look bad.'

Having said this, he pulled on his clothes, opened the door, and headed straight outside.:「Xingzhe grabbed hold of him with one hand, wiped his own face, revealed his true form, and shouted, 'Fine monster, where do you think you're going!?」Raise your head and look at who I really am!' The monster turned his eyes to look, and saw Xingzhe with his jutting fangs and protruding mouth, fiery eyes with golden pupils, a knobby, hairy face — looking exactly like a living Thunder God.So terrified was he that his hands went numb and his legs turned to jelly; with a ripping sound he tore free of his clothes, turned into a wild wind, and made his escape.Xingzhe rushed forward, drew out his iron rod, and struck at the wind with a blow. The monster turned into ten thousand streaks of fiery light and headed straight back to his own mountain.:「Xingzhe mounted the clouds and chased after him, shouting, 'Where do you think you're going! If you go up to Heaven, I'll chase you to the Palace of the Dipper and the Ox;。」if you go down into the earth, I'll pursue you to the Prison of Wrongful Death.'

Ah!In the end, we do not know where this chase led, or who prevailed — listen to the explanation given in the next chapter.

What it’s about

At Gao Village a household complains that a shape-changing monster has confined their daughter and spoiled their respectability. Wukong poses as the young woman, listens to the visitor boast about his work and devotion, then reveals himself. Their farcical pursuit drives the creature from the bedroom toward his mountain home at Cloud-Path Cave.

The stranger is Zhu Bajie, formerly Heaven's Marshal Tianpeng, banished after drunkenly harassing the moon goddess and reborn with a pig's face. The Gao family benefited from his prodigious farm labour before rejecting him, while his control of their daughter remains indefensible. Wukong prepares to confront and recruit this compromised future companion.

When it was written 背景

Bajie's introduction makes him comic without making the household wholly innocent. Appetite, sexuality, labour, shame and desire for belonging are tangled rather than assigned to separate characters. Much is vivid dialogue and disguise comedy. Readers should begin linking former office, family nickname and later religious name, all of which refer to the same figure.
