Monkey Battles the Black Wind Bear-Demon and Guanyin Subdues Him

017Chapter 17

:「The story goes that when Sun Xingzhe leapt into the air with a single somersault, he gave such a fright to all the monks of the Guanyin Temple, great and small, along with the ascetics, acolytes, and lay Daoists, that every one of them bowed toward heaven and said, "Lord! Lord!So it turns out he is a divine sage who rides clouds and mounts mist come down to earth — no wonder the fire could not harm him.使。」:「How I hate that old skin-peeler who didn't know a real man when he saw one and used his cunning against his own good — today he has only brought ruin upon himself." Tripitaka said, "All of you, please rise, there is no need for hatred. If we go and recover the cassock, everything will be settled;。」but I fear that if it cannot be found, my disciple's temper is none too good, and I do not know what will become of your lives — I'm afraid not one of you would escape." When the monks heard this, every single one of them was seized with dread, and they prayed to Heaven and made vows, wishing only that the cassock be found so that all their lives might be spared — but no more of that.

Now to tell of the Great Sage Sun: once in the air, he gave his waist a twist and in no time arrived above Heifeng Mountain, the Black Wind Mountain.Halting his cloud, he looked closely, and indeed it was a fine mountain, and moreover it was just the season of spring scenery; behold:

As Xingzhe was gazing at the mountain scenery, he suddenly heard voices in front of a fragrant grassy slope. He crept forward stealthily, slipping beneath a stone cliff, and stole a glance to look.It turned out to be three demons sitting on the ground: in the seat of honor was a black-skinned fellow, to the left below him sat a Daoist, and to the right below him sat a scholar dressed in white. They were all there talking loftily and expansively, discussing the setting up of tripods and stoves, the refining of cinnabar sand into mercury, white snow and yellow sprout, and other heterodox and sidelong arts.:「。」:「?」:「Just as they were talking, the black-skinned fellow laughed and said, "The day after tomorrow is the anniversary of my mother's suffering in giving me birth; you two gentlemen must honor me with your presence." The scholar in white said, "Every year we come to offer Your Greatness birthday wishes — how could we possibly fail to come this year?" The black-skinned fellow said, "Last night I obtained a treasure, called the Brocade Cassock of Buddha, truly a marvelous thing to enjoy and admire.?」:「Tomorrow I shall use it as the occasion for my birthday, hold a grand banquet, and invite the Daoist officials of every mountain to celebrate the Buddha Robe — let us call it the Buddha Robe Assembly, how would that be?" The Daoist laughed and said, "Excellent, excellent, excellent.。」I shall come the day before to offer birthday greetings, and come again the following day to attend the banquet."

When Xingzhe heard talk of the Buddha robe, he was certain it must be his own treasure.:「He could no longer hold back his fury, and leaping out from the stone cliff, he raised the golden-hooped rod in both hands and cried loudly, "You gang of thieving fiends! You stole my cassock — and now you want to hold a Buddha Robe Assembly?。」!」Hand it back to me at once!" He shouted, "Don't run!" and swung the rod, striking straight at the head.In their fright, the black-skinned fellow turned into wind and fled, and the Daoist mounted a cloud and made off, so that only the white-robed scholar was struck dead by the single blow of the rod.Dragging him over to look, Xingzhe found he was in fact a white-spotted snake demon. Not content with that, he lifted the body up and tore it into five or seven pieces. He then went straight into the deep mountains to search for the black-skinned fellow.Rounding a jagged peak and skirting a steep ridge, he saw before a sheer stone cliff a cave-mansion rising up.Behold:

Xingzhe arrived at the gate and saw that the two stone doors were shut very tightly.」。Above the door was a horizontal stone tablet, on which were written six large characters in clear script: "Heifeng Mountain, Heifeng Cave."便:「!」:「?」:「At once he swung his rod and shouted, "Open the door!" From within, a little demon on gate duty opened the door and came out, asking, "Who are you, that you dare come and strike at my immortal cave?" Xingzhe cursed, "You accursed brute courting death!?『What kind of place is this, that you dare call it an immortal cave? Is the word 'immortal' something you get to claim?。」:「。」:「。」Hurry inside and report to your black-skinned master, tell him to quickly bring out your grandfather's cassock, and I'll spare the lives of your whole nest." The little demon rushed inside in a panic and reported, "Great King, the Buddha Robe Assembly cannot be held — outside the gate there is a hairy-faced, thunder-god-mouthed monk come to demand the cassock." That black-skinned fellow, having been chased all the way from the fragrant grassy slope by Xingzhe, had only just shut the door and had not yet sat down properly when he heard this news; in his heart he thought secretly, "I don't know where this fellow has come from, being so insolent as to dare come clamoring at my very gate." He called for his armor, and once dressed and girded, he took up a black-tasseled spear and strode out the door.Xingzhe stood off to the side outside the gate, gripping his iron rod, and fixed his eyes to look — indeed the fiend was born fierce and formidable in appearance:

:「?」:「?」:「。」:「Xingzhe laughed inwardly, "This fellow really looks just like a kiln-burner or a coal-tamper — he must make his living hereabouts scraping charcoal, otherwise why would his whole body be so pitch black?" The demon called out sternly, "What kind of monk are you, that you dare be so bold here in my domain?" Xingzhe, gripping his iron rod, charged right up to his face and shouted fiercely, "No need for idle talk — quickly return your old outer-grandfather's cassock." The demon said, "Which temple's monk are you??」:「Where did you lose your cassock, that you dare come here to demand it of me?" Xingzhe said, "My cassock is kept in the abbot's rear chamber of the Guanyin Temple due north of here; only because that temple caught fire did you, you wretch, take advantage of the confusion to plunder and steal it, meaning to hold a Buddha Robe Assembly to celebrate a birthday — how dare you deny it?Quickly give it back to me, and I will spare your life;。」but if you so much as let half a 'no' slip from between your teeth, I will topple Black Wind Mountain, level Black Wind Cave flat, and grind every demon and fiend in this whole cave into powder."

:「When the demon heard this, he laughed coldly, "You wretched creature — so it was you who set that fire last night! You caused violence and stirred up the wind on the roof of that abbot's chamber, and it was I who took a cassock away — what business is that of yours?Where have you come from? What is your surname and name?。」:「How great is your skill, that you dare speak with such an ocean-wide, wave-like boast?" Xingzhe said, "So it seems you really don't recognize your own old outer-grandfather.Your old outer-grandfather is the disciple of Tripitaka, the imperial-appointed younger brother of the Tang emperor from the Great Tang in the Land Above — my surname is Sun, my name Wukong the Pilgrim.。」:「。」:「If you ask about old Sun's skill, once I tell it, it will scare your very soul out of your body, and you will drop dead before my eyes." The demon said, "I have never met you before — what skill do you have? Tell it and let me hear." Xingzhe laughed, "My child, stand firm and listen closely.I:

:「?」:「When the demon heard this, he laughed, "So you are that Bimawen who wrought havoc in Heaven!" Now the thing Xingzhe hated most was being called Bimawen, and hearing this name, he flew into a great rage and cursed, "You thieving fiend! You stole the cassock and won't return it — instead you dare to wound me, old grandfather.。」Don't run — take this rod!" The black-skinned fellow dodged aside, seized his long spear, and met the blow with a countering thrust. The two of them then fought a fine and fierce battle:

The demon and Xingzhe fought for over ten rounds without either gaining the upper hand, and gradually the red sun reached its noon height.:「。」:「The black-skinned fellow raised his spear to block the iron rod and said, "Sun the Pilgrim, let the two of us call a truce for now — wait till I've gone in to eat, and then I'll come back out to duel with you." Xingzhe said, "You wretched brute — you call yourself a man? Some man you are, needing to eat after only half a day!便Take old Sun, for instance — pinned beneath the mountain for a full five hundred years and more, never once tasting so much as a drop of broth — when was I ever hungry?。」Don't make excuses, don't run — give me back my cassock, and only then will I let you go eat." The demon feinted with his spear, turned and slipped back into the cave, shut the stone doors, called back his little demons, and set about arranging a banquet and writing invitation letters to invite the demon kings of every mountain to the celebration — but no more of that for now.

Now to tell of Xingzhe: unable to break open the gate no matter how he attacked it, he had no choice but to return to the Guanyin Temple. The monks of that temple had already buried the old monk, and were all in the abbot's chamber attending upon Tang Priest. The morning vegetarian meal was already over, and now the noon meal had been laid out.Just as they were there adding soup and changing the water, they saw Xingzhe descend from the sky; the monks bowed in worship and led him into the abbot's chamber, where he saw Tripitaka.:「Tripitaka said, "Wukong, you've come back? "?」:「"What of the cassock?" Xingzhe said, "I've already got to the bottom of it.It's a good thing we didn't wrongly blame these monks — it turns out it was the demon of Black Wind Mountain who stole it.Old Sun went secretly to search him out, and saw him sitting with a white-robed scholar and an old Daoist before the fragrant grassy slope, talking together. He was a demon bound to give himself away without being pressed — he suddenly said that the day after tomorrow was the anniversary of his mother's suffering in bearing him, and that he was inviting all the fiends to come celebrate his birthday;that last night he had obtained a brocade Buddha-cassock, and meant to use it as the occasion for his birthday, holding a great banquet called the Buddha Robe Celebration Assembly. So old Sun rushed forward and struck one blow with the rod; the black-skinned fellow turned to wind and fled, the Daoist also vanished from sight, and only the white-robed scholar was struck dead — he turned out to be a white-spotted snake spirit.I then hurried on to the mouth of his cave and called him out to duel with me.He has already admitted that it was he who took it back.We fought a good half a day and neither of us gained the advantage. The demon retreated into his cave, saying he wanted to eat, shut the stone doors, and, too afraid to fight, would not come out.So old Sun came back to see Master and report this news first.。」We now have word of where the cassock is — I'm not afraid he won't give it back to me."

:「When the monks heard this, some pressed their palms together, some kowtowed, and all chanted, "Namo Amitabha Buddha!。」:「Now that its whereabouts are found, our lives may yet be spared." Xingzhe said, "Don't be so glad and pleased just yet — I haven't gotten it into my hands yet, and Master has not yet set out on his journey.Only once the cassock is recovered and Master is sent off properly on his way will you all be at peace and ease;if there is the slightest mishap, old Sun is not a master to be trifled with!Has Master been given good tea and food to eat??」 :「Has the horse been given good fodder?" The monks all answered with one voice, "Yes, yes, yes — we have not dared to neglect the Master in the slightest." Tripitaka said, "In the whole half-day since you left, I have already had tea three times and two vegetarian meals, and they have not dared to slight me in the least.。」:「But you must still exert your utmost effort to find and bring back the cassock." Xingzhe said, "Don't worry — now that we have word of its whereabouts, rest assured I will catch this wretch and return your original property to you.。」Set your mind at ease, set your mind at ease."

Just as they were speaking, the abbot of the upper chamber again prepared a vegetarian meal and invited Elder Sun to dine.Xingzhe ate a little of it, then once again mounted the auspicious cloud and went off to search further. As he was traveling along, he suddenly saw a little demon coming along the main road with a rosewood box tucked under his left arm.Xingzhe guessed that the box must contain some sort of letter or invitation, and raising his rod, he struck a single blow straight to the head — poor thing, it could not withstand the blow, and was beaten into something like a meat patty. He then dragged the body to the roadside, lifted the lid of the box to look, and indeed found it was an invitation letter. The letter read as follows:

:「When Xingzhe saw this, he laughed heartily, "That old skin-peeler didn't die a bit unjustly — so he was in league with demons all along! No wonder he lived to the age of two hundred and seventy — he must have been taught some little breath-cultivation technique or other by that demon, and that's how he got such a long life.Old Sun still remembers his appearance — let me transform myself into that monk and go take a stroll inside his cave, to see where my cassock has been put.便。」If I can succeed, I'll snatch it back at once, and that will save a lot of trouble."

Splendid Great Sage — reciting a spell, he faced into the wind and transformed himself, and indeed became the very image of that old monk.:「!」:「。」:「He hid away his iron rod, strode forth, went straight to the mouth of the cave, and called out, "Open the door!" The little demon opened the door, and seeing this figure, hurried back inside to report, "Great King, Elder Jinchi has arrived." The demon was greatly astonished: "I only just sent a little one to deliver the invitation letter inviting him — by this time he shouldn't even have arrived there yet, so how could he get here so quickly? It must be that my little one never even met him on the way, and it's certainly Sun the Pilgrim who has summoned him here to demand the cassock.。」Whoever's in charge of things, hide the Buddha robe away — don't let him see it."

Xingzhe entered through the front gate, and saw that in the courtyard pines and bamboo mingled their green, peach and plum vied in beauty, clusters of flowers bloomed thick, and tufts of orchid gave off their fragrance — truly it was a place like a cave-heaven.:「He also saw on the second gate a pair of couplets written out, reading: "Quietly hidden in the deep mountains, free of worldly cares;。」:「。」Dwelling secluded in the immortal cave, delighting in Heaven's truth." Xingzhe thought to himself secretly, "This fellow too is a creature who has cast off worldly filth and left the dust behind, one who understands his fate." Entering the gate, he went on further, and by the time he reached the third gate within, everywhere were painted beams and carved rafters, bright windows and richly adorned doors. He saw that the black-skinned fellow was wearing a black-green damask-silk padded jacket, over it a cape of raven-blue floral silk, on his head a soft cap of black horn-silk, and on his feet a pair of black boots of deer hide.:「Seeing Xingzhe come in, he straightened his robe and cap and came down the steps to greet him, saying, "Old friend Jinchi, it's been days since we've seen each other, I've missed you.。」Please sit, please sit." Xingzhe exchanged courtesies with him according to proper form.Once the greetings were done they sat, and once seated, tea was brought.:「?」:「。」:「When the tea was finished, the demon rose slightly and said, "I only just sent a short note inviting you to a gathering the day after tomorrow — how is it that you, old friend, have come to call today?" Xingzhe said, "I was just coming to pay you a visit when, on the way, I happened to encounter your elegant letter, and seeing there was to be a refined gathering for the Buddha robe, I hurried straight over, wishing very much for a look at it." The demon laughed, "Old friend, you are mistaken.?」:「This cassock originally belonged to the Tang Monk — he was lodging at your place, so surely you must have seen it already; why come to me instead to look at it?" Xingzhe said, "This humble monk had borrowed it, but as it happened I had not yet unfolded it to look that very night, and unexpectedly it was taken by Your Greatness. And then the wild mountain fire also burned it, and I lost my household belongings. The Tang Monk's disciple is moreover rather fierce and formidable, and in the confusion of it all, we searched everywhere and could not find it.。」So it turns out it was gathered in by Your Greatness's boundless good fortune — that is precisely why I have come specially to have a look."

:「。」:「。」Just as they were talking, a little demon on mountain patrol came in to report, "Great King, disaster! The little scout sent with the invitation letter was beaten to death by Sun the Pilgrim on the roadside, and he has taken the letter and transformed himself into Elder Jinchi to come and trick us out of the Buddha robe." When the demon heard this, he thought secretly, "So that's why the elder came today, and came so fast — it really is him." At once he leapt up, seized his spear, and thrust straight at Xingzhe.Xingzhe swiftly drew the rod out from his ear, resumed his true form, blocked the point of the spear, and leapt out from the central hall, fighting his way from the courtyard clear out to the front gate. This gave such a fright that all the demon host within the cave lost their courage, and everyone in the household, old and young, was scared out of their wits. This bout, fought upon the mountaintop, was a fine fierce duel, even more so than the one before.A fine fight indeed:

The two of them fought from the mouth of the cave up to the mountaintop, and from the mountaintop on up into the clouds beyond, spewing mist and breathing wind, sending sand flying and stones rolling, fighting on until the red sun sank in the west, with neither side gaining victory.:「The demon said, "Master Sun, hold your hand for now — it's late in the day, and it's not good to keep fighting.。」 使Go on, go on — wait till tomorrow morning comes, and then we'll settle it once and for all, life or death." Xingzhe called out, "Don't run, my child — if you want to fight, fight like a man, don't use the lateness of the day as an excuse." Seeing him fighting recklessly, heedless of head or face, he simply kept swinging his rod to strike. The black-skinned fellow once more turned into a gust of clear wind and returned to his own cave, shutting the stone doors tight and not coming out.

:「。」Xingzhe, with no scheme left to deal with him, had no choice but to return likewise to the Guanyin Temple; lowering his cloud, he called out, "Master." Tripitaka had been gazing eagerly and expectantly for him, and suddenly seeing him arrive before him, was greatly pleased;but then, seeing that he had no cassock in hand, he grew afraid again.:「?」:「He asked, "How is it that this time again you have not brought the cassock back?" Xingzhe took the invitation letter out from his sleeve and handed it to Tripitaka, saying, "Master, that demon and the dead old skin-peeler were originally friends. He sent a little demon to deliver this letter, still inviting him to attend the Buddha Robe Assembly.Old Sun promptly killed that little demon, transformed myself into the old monk, went into his cave, and tricked him out of a cup of tea to drink.I wanted to ask him for the cassock to have a look at it, but he would not bring it out.Just as we were sitting there, suddenly some mountain-patrol demon or other let the news leak out, and he started fighting with me.We fought on until just this past hour, without either side gaining the upper hand.Seeing that night was falling, he slipped back into the cave and shut the stone door tight.。」:「?」:「。」"There was nothing old Sun could do, so I came back for the time being." Sanzang said, "How does your skill compare to his?" Xingzhe said, "I'm not much stronger than him — we fought to a draw."

:「?」:「Sanzang, having read the note, handed it back to the abbot and said, "Could it be that your master is a demon too?" The abbot hastily knelt down and said, "Venerable sir, my master is human.。」:「It is only that the Black Great King, having cultivated himself into human form, often comes to the monastery to discuss sutras with my master; he taught my master some arts of nourishing the spirit and controlling the breath, and so they call each other friends." Xingzhe said, "This bunch of monks has no demonic air about them — each one has a round head capped like heaven and square feet treading the earth like the ground, only somewhat fatter and taller than old Sun; they are no demons.』,。」:「:『。』Look, that note is signed 'Your servant, Xiong Pi' — this creature must surely be a black bear turned spirit." Sanzang said, "I have heard the ancients say, 'Bears and orangutans are of a kind.' Both are beasts.?」:「How then could it become a spirit?" Xingzhe laughed and said, "Old Sun is also of the beast kind, yet became the Great Sage Equal to Heaven — how is this any different?。」:「?」:「。」Generally speaking, among all things in the world, any creature with nine orifices can cultivate itself to become an immortal." Sanzang then said, "You just said his skill matches yours evenly — how then will you win and bring back my cassock?" Xingzhe said, "Never mind, never mind, I have a plan for that."

While they were discussing this, the monks laid out the evening vegetarian meal and invited master and disciples to eat.Sanzang had the lamps lit and went once more to rest in the meditation hall at the front. The monks all pressed against the walls, rigging up makeshift shelters, and each lay down to sleep, giving up the abbot's quarters at the rear for the senior and junior priors to lodge in.At this time the night was still; behold:

That night they lodged in the meditation hall.Sanzang, his mind on the cassock, how could he possibly sleep soundly?:「。」:「。」:「?」:「He turned over and suddenly saw whiteness showing through the window, and rose in haste, crying, "Wukong, day has broken — go quickly and find the cassock." Xingzhe sprang up in a single leap, and seeing the monks all standing in attendance, offering hot water, said, "Take good care in serving my master — old Sun is off." Sanzang got out of bed and grabbed hold of him, saying, "Where are you going?" Xingzhe said, "I think this whole affair is the fault of the Bodhisattva Guanyin — she has this meditation retreat here, accepts the incense and offerings of the people of this place, yet lets a demon live next door.。」:「?」:「I'll go to the South Sea to find her and have it out with her, and make her come herself to demand the cassock from the demon and give it back to me." Sanzang said, "On this trip, when will you return?" Xingzhe said, "At the least it will be done by the time of the meal, at the most by noon — it will be settled.。」Let those monks serve you well — old Sun is off."

No sooner had he said the word "go" than he had already vanished without a trace. In an instant he reached the South Sea, and halting his cloud, looked about him.Behold:

Xingzhe, unable to take in all those wondrous and extraordinary sights, brought his cloud straight down and arrived beneath the bamboo grove.:「The various devas had already come out to greet him, saying, "The Bodhisattva earlier told everyone that the Great Sage had returned to goodness, and spoke of it with great praise.?」:「。」Now that you are escorting the Tang Monk, how do you find the leisure to come here?" Xingzhe said, "It is precisely because of escorting the Tang Monk that I met with a matter on the road, and I have come especially to see the Bodhisattva — please be so good as to announce me." The devas then went to the mouth of the cave to report this, and the Bodhisattva called him in.Xingzhe followed the proper etiquette and went in, bowing beneath the Precious Lotus Throne.:「?」:「。」:「The Bodhisattva asked, "What have you come for?" Xingzhe said, "My master, passing by your meditation retreat — you accept the incense offerings of mortals there, yet let a black bear spirit live nearby, and it stole my master's cassock. I have demanded it back many times without success, and now I have come especially to ask it of you." The Bodhisattva said, "This monkey's words are so unreasonable. If it was the bear spirit who stole your cassock, how is it you come to demand it of me?。」:「It's all because of you, this reckless, sinful monkey, showing off the treasure and letting petty men catch sight of it — and then you went and acted violently, summoning wind and setting fires, and burned down my Liuyun lower monastery, and now instead come here to make trouble with me." When Xingzhe heard the Bodhisattva say this, he knew she understood matters past and future, and hastily bowed in worship, saying, "Bodhisattva, please forgive your disciple's fault — it was indeed just as you say.But I resent that the monster will not give up my cassock, and my master keeps wanting to recite that spell — old Sun cannot bear the headache, and so I have come to trouble the Bodhisattva.西。」:「I hope the Bodhisattva, in her merciful heart, will help me go and capture that demon, so that I may recover the robe and proceed westward." The Bodhisattva said, "That monster has a great deal of magic power, and is by no means inferior to you.。」Very well then — for the Tang Monk's sake I will go with you and make the trip." Hearing this, Xingzhe gave thanks and bowed again. He then invited the Bodhisattva out, and together they rode the auspicious clouds, soon reaching Black Wind Mountain; they brought their clouds down and followed the path to search for the cave.

Just as they were walking along, they saw a Daoist come out from the front of the mountain slope, holding in his hand a glass tray with two grains of immortal elixir set upon it, walking straight ahead. Xingzhe ran straight into him, drew out his staff, and struck him full on the head with one blow, so that his brains spilled out and blood spurted from his body.:「The Bodhisattva was greatly startled and said, "You monkey, still so wild and reckless.?」:「He never stole your cassock, nor is he even known to you, nor is there any grudge between you — how could you just beat him to death?" Xingzhe said, "Bodhisattva, you don't recognize him, but he is a friend of that black bear spirit.Yesterday he and a scholar dressed in white were both sitting talking together in front of Fragrant Grass Slope. The day after tomorrow is the black spirit's birthday, and he invited them to come celebrate the Buddha Robe Gathering.Today this one came ahead to offer birthday greetings, and tomorrow he was to come again for the Buddha Robe Gathering.。」:「。」That's how I recognized him — he must surely have come today on the demon's behalf to offer birthday greetings." The Bodhisattva said, "If that is how it is, then never mind." Xingzhe then went and lifted up the Daoist to look, and it turned out to be a gray wolf.」。On the underside of the tray beside him there were words carved: "Made by Lingxuzi."

When Xingzhe saw this, he laughed and said, "What luck, what luck! Old Sun gains an advantage, and the Bodhisattva is spared trouble too.。」:「?」:「?」:「。」:「便This creature has confessed without being tortured, and it means that other demon is done for today." The Bodhisattva said, "Wukong, what do you mean by that?" Xingzhe said, "Bodhisattva, I, Wukong, have an idea called turning the enemy's own scheme against him — I wonder if the Bodhisattva would be willing to go along with me?" The Bodhisattva said, "Speak." Xingzhe said, "Bodhisattva, look — these two grains of elixir in the tray will serve as our gift of introduction to that demon;』,便and the four characters carved on the back of the tray, saying 'Made by Lingxuzi,' will serve as our summons to draw the demon in.If the Bodhisattva is willing to go along with me, I can devise a plan for you, so that there will be no need to raise weapons or trouble yourself with battle — the demon will meet with disaster right before your eyes, and the Buddha robe will appear right before your eyes;西。」:「。」:「。」:「?」:「』,but if the Bodhisattva is unwilling to go along with me, then the Bodhisattva may go west and I, Wukong, will go east — you may as well consider the Buddha robe given away as a gift, and Tang Sanzang may as well consider it lost for good." The Bodhisattva laughed and said, "This monkey has a glib tongue." Xingzhe said, "I would not presume — it really is a good plan." The Bodhisattva said, "How does this plan of yours go?" Xingzhe said, "This tray is carved with 'Made by Lingxuzi' — I suppose this Daoist must be called Lingxuzi.Bodhisattva, if you're willing to go along with me, you could transform into this Daoist, and I will eat one of these elixir grains and transform into another, only a bit bigger.Bodhisattva, you then carry this tray with the two grains of elixir to offer birthday wishes to the demon, and let him have the larger one.便。」Once the demon swallows it in one gulp, old Sun will act from within: if he refuses to hand over the Buddha robe, old Sun will just weave a robe right out of his own guts." The Bodhisattva had no better plan, and had no choice but to nod her head and go along with him.:「?」Xingzhe laughed and said, "Well, how about it?"

At that time the Bodhisattva, with her vast and boundless mercy and limitless magic power, her hundred million transformations, letting mind meet intent and intent meet form, in an instant transformed herself into the Immortal Lingxu:

:「Xingzhe looked and said, "Marvelous, marvelous!?」:「Is it the demon who is the Bodhisattva, or the Bodhisattva who is the demon?" The Bodhisattva laughed and said, "Wukong, Bodhisattva and demon are, after all, but a single thought;。」if one speaks of the original nature, both belong to nothingness." Xingzhe's heart was suddenly enlightened at this, and he turned himself about and transformed into a grain of immortal elixir:

When Xingzhe transformed into that elixir grain, it was in the end just a bit larger than the other. The Bodhisattva took careful note, picked up the glass tray, and went straight to the mouth of the demon's cave to look, and indeed it was:

:「。」The Bodhisattva looked and secretly rejoiced in her heart, thinking, "This sinful beast has occupied this mountain cave, but it does have some measure of spiritual attainment." And so a feeling of mercy had already arisen in her heart.

:「。」When she walked to the mouth of the cave, the little demons guarding it all seemed to recognize her, saying, "Immortal Elder Lingxu has come." They passed word along on one side while leading her in on the other.:「。」:「。」The demon had already come out to greet her at the door, saying, "Lingxu, I'm honored by your immortal presence — my humble abode is graced with radiance." The Bodhisattva said, "This humble Daoist respectfully offers a grain of immortal elixir, in hopes of wishing you a thousand years of life." The two of them, having bowed to each other, then sat down, and went on to speak of yesterday's affair.:「。」:「。」:「。」The Bodhisattva did not answer, but hastily took up the elixir tray and said, "Great King, please accept this small token of my humble regard." She fixed on the larger grain and pushed it toward the demon, saying, "May the Great King live a thousand years." The demon likewise pushed a grain over, handing it to the Bodhisattva and saying, "May it be shared equally with Lingxuzi." After this exchange of courtesy, the demon was about to swallow his, and the medicine slid straight down his throat. He then revealed his true form and set himself squarely on all fours. The demon rolled over and fell to the ground. The Bodhisattva revealed her true form and demanded the Buddha robe from the demon.Xingzhe had already slipped out through his nostril. The Bodhisattva, fearing the demon might still act unruly, threw a golden band onto his head. The demon got up, raised his spear to strike, but Xingzhe and the Bodhisattva had already risen into the air and begun reciting the true words.滿The monster's head ached as before, so he dropped his spear and rolled about wildly on the ground.High in the air the Handsome Monkey King laughed himself silly, while down on level ground the black bear demon rolled about in agony.

The Bodhisattva said, "Sinful beast, will you now submit to conversion?" The demon said with his whole mouth, "I am willing with all my heart to convert — I only beg you spare my life." Xingzhe, fearing this was wasting time, wanted to strike him dead at once.:「。」:「?」:「。」:「The Bodhisattva hastily stopped him, saying, "Do not take his life — I have a use for him." Xingzhe said, "A monster like this — if you don't beat him to death, what use could you possibly have for keeping him around?" The Bodhisattva said, "The back of my Mount Luojia has no one to watch over it; I mean to take him along to be a Great God Guarding the Mountain." Xingzhe laughed and said, "Truly you are a merciful lord who saves all from suffering, sparing every single soul.If old Sun had a spell like that, I'd recite the wretched thing a thousand times over.。」:「。」There'd be plenty of black bears settling their accounts by now, I tell you." Now, that monster, having long since come to his senses, truly could not bear the pain any longer, and had no choice but to kneel on the ground and beg piteously, "Only spare my life, and I am willing to submit to the true fruit." The Bodhisattva then let her auspicious light descend, laid her hand upon his crown to administer the precepts, and had him take up his long spear to follow at her side. That black bear's once-wild heart was at last set at rest that day, and his boundless stubborn nature was, at that moment, reined in.

:「。」:「。」:「。」The Bodhisattva instructed him, "Wukong, you may go back now. Serve the Tang Monk well, and from now on, no more slacking off and stirring up trouble." Xingzhe said, "I am deeply grateful that the Bodhisattva came so far — your disciple ought to escort you back a ways." The Bodhisattva said, "There's no need to see me off." Xingzhe then took up the cassock in his arms, kowtowed, and took his leave. The Bodhisattva likewise took the bear spirit with her and returned straight to the great sea. There is a poem to bear witness. The poem says:

In the end, we do not know what happened afterward — listen to the explanation given in the next chapter.

What it’s about

Wukong repeatedly fights Black Bear, an opponent able to retreat behind his cave whenever pressed. He infiltrates a planned feast by impersonating a snake spirit and tries other tricks, but cannot securely recover the cassock. He finally asks Guanyin for help; she adopts the snake's form while Wukong becomes an elixir pill for the monster to swallow.

Tormented from within, Black Bear submits, and Guanyin fits him with a restraining band and takes him as guardian of her mountain. The cassock returns to Tripitaka and the survivors face the burned monastery. Unlike Jinchi, the monster's ability can be redirected, though recovering the object cannot undo Wukong's destructive revenge.

When it was written 背景

The parallel bands on Wukong and Black Bear reveal Guanyin's recurring method: dangerous strength is disciplined and reassigned rather than always killed. Learners can follow the cycle of duel, disguise, failed recovery and appeal for specialized help. This paired conclusion also refuses a tidy moral division between civilized monastery and monster cave.
