诗曰：

卻說那劉伯欽與唐三藏驚驚慌慌，又聞得叫聲「師父來也」。Now Liu Boqin and Tang Sanzang, both startled and alarmed, heard again a voice calling, "Master, come!"眾家僮道：「這叫的必是那山腳下石匣中老猿。」太保道：「是他，是他。」三藏問：「是甚麼老猿？」太保道：「這山舊名五行山，因我大唐王征西定國，改名兩界山。The household servants said, "That must be the old ape in the stone casket at the foot of the mountain." The Grand Guardian said, "It's him, it's him." Sanzang asked, "What old ape is this?" The Grand Guardian said, "This mountain was formerly called Five Elements Mountain; because our Great Tang king campaigned westward to pacify the realm, it was renamed Mountain of the Two Frontiers."先年間曾聞得老人家說：王莽篡漢之時，天降此山，下壓著一個神猴，不怕寒暑，不吃飲食，自有土神監押，教他饑餐鐵丸，渴飲銅汁。"In years past I heard the old folk say: when Wang Mang usurped the Han throne, Heaven sent this mountain down, pressing beneath it a divine monkey, who feared neither cold nor heat and ate no food, being kept under guard by the local earth god, who made him eat iron pellets when hungry and drink molten copper when thirsty."自昔到今，凍餓不死。"From that time to this, he has neither frozen nor starved to death."這叫必定是他。"This calling must surely be him."長老莫怕，我們下山去看來。」三藏只得依從，牽馬下山。"Elder, do not be afraid, let us go down the mountain and take a look." Sanzang had no choice but to comply, and leading his horse, went down the mountain.行不數里，只見那石匣之間果有一猴，露著頭，伸著手，亂招手道：「師父，你怎麼此時才來？They had not gone more than a few li when they saw, indeed, a monkey within the stone casket, his head exposed and his hand stretched out, waving wildly and calling, "Master, why have you come only now?"來得好，來得好。"You've come at just the right time, just the right time."救我出來，我保你上西天去也。」這長老近前細看，你道他是怎生模樣："Save me and get me out, and I will protect you on your journey to the Western Heaven." The elder drew near and looked closely — and what, you ask, did he look like:

却说那刘伯钦与唐三藏惊惊慌慌，又闻得叫声「师父来也」。众家僮道：「这叫的必是那山脚下石匣中老猿。」太保道：「是他，是他。」三藏问：「是甚么老猿？」太保道：「这山旧名五行山，因我大唐王征西定国，改名两界山。先年间曾闻得老人家说：王莽篡汉之时，天降此山，下压著一个神猴，不怕寒暑，不吃饮食，自有土神监押，教他饥餐铁丸，渴饮铜汁。自昔到今，冻饿不死。这叫必定是他。长老莫怕，我们下山去看来。」三藏只得依从，牵马下山。行不数里，只见那石匣之间果有一猴，露著头，伸著手，乱招手道：「师父，你怎么此时才来？来得好，来得好。救我出来，我保你上西天去也。」这长老近前细看，你道他是怎生模样：

劉太保誠然膽大，走上前來，與他拔去了鬢邊草，頷下莎，問道：「你有甚麼說話？」那猴道：「我沒話說，教那個師父上來，我問他一問。」三藏道：「你問我甚麼？」那猴道：「你可是東土大王差往西天取經去的麼？」三藏道：「我正是，你問怎麼？」那猴道：「我是五百年前大鬧天宮的齊天大聖，只因犯了誑上之罪，被佛祖壓於此處。Grand Guardian Liu was truly bold indeed; he stepped forward and pulled away the grass at the monkey's temples and the sedge beneath his chin, and asked, "What do you have to say?" The monkey said, "I have nothing to say to you — have that master come up here, I want to ask him something." Sanzang said, "What do you want to ask me?" The monkey said, "Are you the one sent by the great king of the Land of the East to fetch scriptures from the Western Heaven?" Sanzang said, "I am indeed. Why do you ask?" The monkey said, "I am the Great Sage Equal to Heaven who wreaked havoc in Heaven five hundred years ago; only because I committed the crime of deceiving my superiors was I pressed here beneath this mountain by the Buddha."前者有個觀音菩薩，領佛旨意，上東土尋取經人。"Some time ago the Bodhisattva Guanyin, carrying the Buddha's decree, went to the Land of the East to seek out one who would fetch the scriptures."我教他救我一救，他勸我再莫行兇，歸依佛法，盡慇懃保護取經人，往西方拜佛，功成後自有好處。"I asked him to save me, and he urged me to commit no more violence, but to take refuge in the Buddha's Law and diligently protect the scripture-seeker on the journey west to worship Buddha, promising that good things would come once the task was accomplished."故此晝夜提心，晨昏弔膽，只等師父來救我脫身。"Therefore day and night I have kept my heart in my throat, morning and evening on edge, only waiting for the master to come and save me from this."我願保你取經，與你做個徒弟。」三藏聞言，滿心歡喜道：「你雖有此善心，又蒙菩薩教誨，願入沙門，只是我又沒斧鑿，如何救得你出？」那猴道：「不用斧鑿，你但肯救我，我自出來也。」三藏道：「我自救你，你怎得出來？」那猴道：「這山頂上有我佛如來的金字壓帖，你只上山去將帖兒揭起，我就出來了。」三藏依言，回頭央浼劉伯欽道：「太保啊，我與你上山走一遭。」伯欽道：「不知真假何如？」那猴高叫道：「是真，決不敢虛謬。」"I am willing to protect you on your journey for the scriptures and become your disciple." Hearing this, Sanzang was filled with joy and said, "Although you have this good heart, and have been taught by the Bodhisattva and wish to enter the gate of Buddhism, I have no axe or chisel — how could I get you out?" The monkey said, "No axe or chisel is needed. If you are only willing to save me, I will come out on my own." Sanzang said, "If I am to save you myself, how will you manage to get out?" The monkey said, "On the summit of this mountain there is a seal with golden letters set by our Buddha Tathagata; you have only to climb the mountain and lift off that seal, and I shall come out at once." Sanzang agreed, and turning back he entreated Liu Boqin, saying, "Grand Guardian, let us go up the mountain together." Boqin said, "I don't know whether this is true or false." The monkey called out loudly, "It is true — I would never dare speak falsely."

刘太保诚然胆大，走上前来，与他拔去了鬓边草，颔下莎，问道：「你有甚么说话？」那猴道：「我没话说，教那个师父上来，我问他一问。」三藏道：「你问我甚么？」那猴道：「你可是东土大王差往西天取经去的么？」三藏道：「我正是，你问怎么？」那猴道：「我是五百年前大闹天宫的齐天大圣，只因犯了诳上之罪，被佛祖压于此处。前者有个观音菩萨，领佛旨意，上东土寻取经人。我教他救我一救，他劝我再莫行凶，归依佛法，尽慇懃保护取经人，往西方拜佛，功成后自有好处。故此昼夜提心，晨昏吊胆，只等师父来救我脱身。我愿保你取经，与你做个徒弟。」三藏闻言，满心欢喜道：「你虽有此善心，又蒙菩萨教诲，愿入沙门，只是我又没斧凿，如何救得你出？」那猴道：「不用斧凿，你但肯救我，我自出来也。」三藏道：「我自救你，你怎得出来？」那猴道：「这山顶上有我佛如来的金字压帖，你只上山去将帖儿揭起，我就出来了。」三藏依言，回头央浼刘伯钦道：「太保啊，我与你上山走一遭。」伯钦道：「不知真假何如？」那猴高叫道：「是真，决不敢虚谬。」

伯欽只得呼喚家僮，牽了馬匹。Boqin had no choice but to call the household servants and lead the horse.他卻扶著三藏，復上高山。He then supported Sanzang, and together they climbed the high mountain once more.攀籐附葛，只行到那極巔之處，果然見金光萬道，瑞氣千條，有塊四方大石，石上貼著一封皮，卻是「唵嘛呢叭��吽」六個金字。Clutching at vines and creepers, they climbed all the way to the very summit, where indeed they saw ten thousand shafts of golden light and a thousand strands of auspicious mist; there was a great square rock, and on the rock was pasted a paper seal bearing the six golden characters "Om Mani Padme Hum."三藏近前跪下，朝石頭看著金字，拜了幾拜，望西禱祝道：「弟子陳玄奘，特奉旨意求經。Sanzang went forward and knelt down; facing the rock, looking at the golden characters, he bowed several times, and turning toward the west he prayed, saying, "I, your disciple Chen Xuanzang, have been specially charged by imperial decree to seek the scriptures."果有徒弟之分，揭得金字，救出神猴，同證靈山；"If it is truly fated that I should have this disciple, let me be able to lift off the golden characters and free the divine monkey, that together we may attain to Vulture Peak;"若無徒弟之分，此輩是個兇頑怪物，哄賺弟子，不成吉慶，便揭不得起。」祝罷又拜。"but if it is not fated that I should have this disciple, and this creature is a vicious and stubborn monster deceiving me, then may this bring no good fortune, and may I be unable to lift it off at all." Having prayed, he bowed again.拜畢，上前將六個金字輕輕揭下。When the bows were finished, he stepped forward and gently lifted off the six golden characters.只聞得一陣香風，劈手把壓帖兒刮在空中，叫道：「吾乃監押大聖者。Just then a gust of fragrant wind was felt, snatching the seal-paper straight out of his hand into the air, and a voice called out, "I am the one who has kept guard over the Great Sage."今日他的難滿，吾等回見如來，繳此封皮去也。」嚇得個三藏與伯欽一行人望空禮拜。"Today his ordeal is at an end, and we are returning to see the Tathagata to return this seal-paper." This gave Sanzang, Boqin, and the whole party such a fright that they bowed in worship toward the empty air.徑下高山，又至石匣邊，對那猴道：「揭了壓帖矣，你出來罷。」那猴歡喜，叫道：「師父，你請走開些，我好出來，莫驚了你。」They went straight back down the high mountain and came again to the stone casket, and said to the monkey, "The seal has been lifted; you may come out now." The monkey, overjoyed, called out, "Master, please step back a little, so that I may come out — I don't want to frighten you."

伯钦只得呼唤家僮，牵了马匹。他却扶著三藏，复上高山。攀籐附葛，只行到那极巅之处，果然见金光万道，瑞气千条，有块四方大石，石上贴著一封皮，却是「唵嘛呢叭𠺗吽」六个金字。三藏近前跪下，朝石头看著金字，拜了几拜，望西祷祝道：「弟子陈玄奘，特奉旨意求经。果有徒弟之分，揭得金字，救出神猴，同证灵山；若无徒弟之分，此辈是个凶顽怪物，哄赚弟子，不成吉庆，便揭不得起。」祝罢又拜。拜毕，上前将六个金字轻轻揭下。只闻得一阵香风，劈手把压帖儿刮在空中，叫道：「吾乃监押大圣者。今日他的难满，吾等回见如来，缴此封皮去也。」吓得个三藏与伯钦一行人望空礼拜。径下高山，又至石匣边，对那猴道：「揭了压帖矣，你出来罢。」那猴欢喜，叫道：「师父，你请走开些，我好出来，莫惊了你。」

伯欽聽說，領著三藏，一行人回東即走。On hearing this, Boqin led Sanzang and the whole party at once back eastward.走了五七里遠近，又聽得那猴高叫道：「再走，再走。」三藏又行了許遠，下了山，只聞得一聲響喨，真個是地裂山崩。They had walked some five or seven li when they again heard the monkey call out loudly, "Keep going, keep going!" Sanzang walked on quite a distance further, down the mountain, when suddenly a loud crashing sound was heard — truly it was as if the earth split and the mountain collapsed.眾人盡皆悚懼。Everyone in the party was terrified.只見那猴早到了三藏的馬前，赤淋淋跪下，道聲：「師父，我出來也。」對三藏拜了四拜，急起身，與伯欽唱個大喏道：「有勞大哥送我師父，又承大哥替我臉上薅草。」謝畢，就去收拾行李，扣背馬匹。Then they saw the monkey had already arrived before Sanzang's horse, and kneeling down stark naked, said, "Master, I have come out!" He bowed four times to Sanzang, then quickly rose and made a deep bow to Boqin, saying, "I am obliged to you, elder brother, for escorting my master here, and also for clearing the grass from my face." Having given his thanks, he went to gather up the luggage and fasten it onto the horse's back.那馬見了他，腰軟蹄矬，戰兢兢的立站不住。When the horse saw him, its back went weak and its hooves buckled, and trembling, it could not stand still.蓋因那猴原是弼馬溫，在天上看養龍馬的，有些法則，故此凡馬見他害怕。This was because the monkey had originally been the Protector of the Horses in Heaven, who tended the dragon-steeds there, and possessed certain powers over them, so that ordinary horses were afraid whenever they saw him.

伯钦听说，领著三藏，一行人回东即走。走了五七里远近，又听得那猴高叫道：「再走，再走。」三藏又行了许远，下了山，只闻得一声响喨，真个是地裂山崩。众人尽皆悚惧。只见那猴早到了三藏的马前，赤淋淋跪下，道声：「师父，我出来也。」对三藏拜了四拜，急起身，与伯钦唱个大喏道：「有劳大哥送我师父，又承大哥替我脸上薅草。」谢毕，就去收拾行李，扣背马匹。那马见了他，腰软蹄矬，战兢兢的立站不住。盖因那猴原是弼马温，在天上看养龙马的，有些法则，故此凡马见他害怕。

三藏見他意思，實有好心，真個像沙門中的人物，便叫：「徒弟啊，你姓甚麼？」猴王道：「我姓孫。」三藏道：「我與你起個法名，卻好呼喚。」猴王道：「不勞師父盛意，我原有個法名，叫做孫悟空。」三藏歡喜道：「也正合我們的宗派。Sanzang, seeing that his intentions were truly good and that he really seemed like one belonging to the Buddhist order, said, "Disciple, what is your surname?" The Monkey King said, "My surname is Sun." Sanzang said, "Let me give you a religious name, so that I may address you properly." The Monkey King said, "There is no need to trouble yourself, Master — I already have a religious name, Sun Wukong." Sanzang said happily, "That fits our sect's naming order exactly."你這個模樣，就像那小頭陀一般，我與你起個混名，稱為行者，好麼？」悟空道：「好，好，好。」自此時又稱為孫行者。"With your appearance, you look just like a little novice monk; let me give you a nickname too, and call you 'Pilgrim' — how would that be?" Wukong said, "Good, good, good." From this time on he was also called Sun the Pilgrim (Sun Xingzhe).

三藏见他意思，实有好心，真个像沙门中的人物，便叫：「徒弟啊，你姓甚么？」猴王道：「我姓孙。」三藏道：「我与你起个法名，却好呼唤。」猴王道：「不劳师父盛意，我原有个法名，叫做孙悟空。」三藏欢喜道：「也正合我们的宗派。你这个模样，就像那小头陀一般，我与你起个混名，称为行者，好么？」悟空道：「好，好，好。」自此时又称为孙行者。

那伯欽見孫行者一心收拾要行，卻轉身對三藏唱個喏道：「長老，你幸此間收得個好徒，甚喜，甚喜。Boqin, seeing that Sun the Pilgrim was intent on packing up to set off, turned and made a bow to Sanzang, saying, "Elder, you are fortunate to have gained such a good disciple here — I am very glad, very glad."此人果然去得。"This one will truly serve well on your journey."我卻告回。」三藏躬身作禮相謝道：「多有拖步，感激不勝。"But now I must take my leave and return." Sanzang bowed and thanked him, saying, "You have troubled yourself to walk so far with us — I am more grateful than I can say."回府多多致意令堂老夫人、令荊夫人，貧僧在府多擾，容回時踵謝。」伯欽回禮，遂此兩下分別。"When you return home, please convey my many regards to your honored mother and your good wife; I have been much of a burden to your household, and will come to offer proper thanks when I return this way." Boqin returned the bow, and thereupon the two parties went their separate ways.

那伯钦见孙行者一心收拾要行，却转身对三藏唱个喏道：「长老，你幸此间收得个好徒，甚喜，甚喜。此人果然去得。我却告回。」三藏躬身作礼相谢道：「多有拖步，感激不胜。回府多多致意令堂老夫人、令荆夫人，贫僧在府多扰，容回时踵谢。」伯钦回礼，遂此两下分别。

卻說那孫行者請三藏上馬，他在前邊背著行李，赤條條，拐步而行。Now Sun the Pilgrim asked Sanzang to mount the horse, while he himself, stark naked, walked ahead carrying the luggage on his back, striding along.不多時，過了兩界山，忽然見一隻猛虎，咆哮剪尾而來。Before long, they had passed beyond the Mountain of the Two Frontiers, when suddenly they saw a fierce tiger come roaring toward them, lashing its tail.三藏在馬上驚心。Sanzang, on the horse, was struck with fear.行者在路傍歡喜道：「師父莫怕他，他是送衣服與我的。」放下行李，耳朵裡拔出一個針兒，迎著風，幌一幌，原來是個碗來粗細一條鐵棒。The Pilgrim, at the roadside, said cheerfully, "Master, don't be afraid of him — he's come to bring me some clothes." He set down the luggage, pulled a needle from his ear, and gave it a shake in the wind — and it turned out to be an iron rod as thick around as a bowl.他拿在手中，笑道：「這寶貝，五百餘年不曾用著他，今日拿出來掙件衣服兒穿穿。」你看他拽開步，迎著猛虎，道聲：「業畜！Holding it in his hand, he laughed and said, "This treasure — I haven't used it in more than five hundred years. Today I'll bring it out to earn myself a garment to wear." Watch him stride forward to meet the fierce tiger, calling out, "You wretched beast!"那裡去！」那隻虎蹲著身，伏在塵埃，動也不敢動動。"Where do you think you're going!" The tiger crouched down, cowering in the dust, not daring to move even a little.卻被他照頭一棒，就打的腦漿迸萬點桃紅，牙齒噴幾珠玉塊。He brought the rod down straight on its head with a single blow, smashing its brains into ten thousand flecks of peach-pink, and sending its teeth flying out like scattered pieces of jade.諕得那陳玄奘滾鞍落馬，咬指道聲：「天那！This gave Chen Xuanzang such a fright that he tumbled from his saddle and fell off the horse, biting his finger and crying, "Heavens!"天那！"Heavens!"劉太保前日打的斑斕虎，還與他鬥了半日；When Grand Guardian Liu killed the striped tiger the other day, he had to fight it for half a day;今日孫悟空不用爭持，把這虎一棒打得稀爛。but today Sun Wukong, without any struggle at all, smashed this tiger to a pulp with a single blow of his rod.正是強中更有強中手！」Truly, beyond the strong there is always one stronger still!"

却说那孙行者请三藏上马，他在前边背著行李，赤条条，拐步而行。不多时，过了两界山，忽然见一只猛虎，咆哮剪尾而来。三藏在马上惊心。行者在路傍欢喜道：「师父莫怕他，他是送衣服与我的。」放下行李，耳朵里拔出一个针儿，迎著风，幌一幌，原来是个碗来粗细一条铁棒。他拿在手中，笑道：「这宝贝，五百余年不曾用著他，今日拿出来挣件衣服儿穿穿。」你看他拽开步，迎著猛虎，道声：「业畜！那里去！」那只虎蹲著身，伏在尘埃，动也不敢动动。却被他照头一棒，就打的脑浆迸万点桃红，牙齿喷几珠玉块。諕得那陈玄奘滚鞍落马，咬指道声：「天那！天那！刘太保前日打的斑斓虎，还与他斗了半日；今日孙悟空不用争持，把这虎一棒打得稀烂。正是强中更有强中手！」

行者拖將虎來道：「師父略坐一坐，等我脫下他的衣服來，穿了走路。」三藏道：「他那裡有甚衣服？」行者道：「師父莫管我，我自有處置。」好猴王，把毫毛拔下一根，吹口仙氣，叫：「變！」變作一把牛耳尖刀，從那虎腹上挑開皮，往下一剝，剝下個囫圇皮來。The Pilgrim dragged the tiger over and said, "Master, sit and rest a moment while I strip off his clothes to wear on the road." Sanzang said, "What clothes could he possibly have?" The Pilgrim said, "Master, don't concern yourself about me — I have my own way of managing it." The splendid Monkey King plucked out one strand of hair, blew a breath of magic upon it, and cried, "Change!" — and it turned into a sharp ox-eared knife. With it he slit open the tiger's belly and, peeling downward, stripped off the hide in one whole piece.剁去了爪甲，割下頭來，割個四四方方一塊虎皮。He hacked off the claws, cut off the head, and trimmed the tiger skin into a neat, square piece.提起來，量了一量道：「闊了些兒，一幅可作兩幅。」拿過刀來，又裁為兩幅。Lifting it up, he measured it and said, "This is a bit too wide — one piece could be made into two." He took up the knife again and cut it into two pieces.收起一幅，把一幅圍在腰間。He put one piece away and wrapped the other around his waist.路傍揪了一條葛籐，緊緊束定，遮了下體道：「師父，且去，且去。By the roadside he pulled up a length of creeper vine and bound it tightly in place, covering his lower body, and said, "Master, let's go, let's go."到了人家，借些針線，再縫不遲。」他把條鐵棒捻一捻，依舊像個針兒，收在耳裡。"Once we reach a house, we can borrow a needle and thread, and there will be time enough to sew it properly." He gave the iron rod a twist, and it turned back into the shape of a needle, which he put away in his ear.背著行李，請師父上馬。Then, carrying the luggage on his back, he asked the master to mount the horse.

行者拖将虎来道：「师父略坐一坐，等我脱下他的衣服来，穿了走路。」三藏道：「他那里有甚衣服？」行者道：「师父莫管我，我自有处置。」好猴王，把毫毛拔下一根，吹口仙气，叫：「变！」变作一把牛耳尖刀，从那虎腹上挑开皮，往下一剥，剥下个囫囵皮来。剁去了爪甲，割下头来，割个四四方方一块虎皮。提起来，量了一量道：「阔了些儿，一幅可作两幅。」拿过刀来，又裁为两幅。收起一幅，把一幅围在腰间。路傍揪了一条葛籐，紧紧束定，遮了下体道：「师父，且去，且去。到了人家，借些针线，再缝不迟。」他把条铁棒捻一捻，依旧像个针儿，收在耳里。背著行李，请师父上马。

兩個前進，長老在馬上問道：「悟空，你才打虎的鐵棒，如何不見？」行者笑道：「師父，你不曉得。The two of them went on ahead, and the elder, on horseback, asked, "Wukong, that iron rod you just used to kill the tiger — where has it gone?" The Pilgrim laughed and said, "Master, you don't understand."我這棍，本是東洋大海龍宮裡得來的，喚做天河鎮底神珍鐵，又喚做如意金箍棒。"This rod of mine I originally obtained from the Dragon Palace in the Eastern Ocean; it is called the Divine Treasure Iron that Anchors the Bottom of the Heavenly River, and is also called the As-You-Will Gold-Banded Rod."當年大反天宮，甚是虧他。"In years past, when I greatly rebelled against Heaven, I owed a great deal to this rod."隨身變化，要大就大，要小就小。"It changes along with me, becoming as large as I wish it large, or as small as I wish it small."剛才變做一個繡花針兒模樣，收在耳內矣。"Just now it turned into the shape of an embroidery needle, and I put it away in my ear."但用時，方可取出。」三藏聞言暗喜。"Only when I need to use it do I take it out." Hearing this, Sanzang was secretly delighted.又問道：「方才那虎見了你，怎麼就不動動？He then asked further, "Just now, when that tiger saw you, why did it not move at all?"讓你自在打他，何說？」悟空道：「不瞞師父說，莫道是隻虎，就是一條龍，見了我也不敢無禮。"It let you strike it freely — how do you explain that?" Wukong said, "To tell you honestly, Master, never mind a mere tiger — even a dragon, upon seeing me, would not dare to act unruly."我老孫頗有降龍伏虎的手段，翻江攪海的神通；"Old Sun here has considerable skill in subduing dragons and taming tigers, and divine powers to overturn rivers and stir up seas;"見貌辨色，聆音察理；"I can judge by appearance and read the signs, and by listening to sounds discern the truth of things;"大之則量於宇宙，小之則攝於毫毛；"when great, I can fill the whole universe; when small, I can be gathered into a single hair;"變化無端，隱顯莫測。"my transformations are without limit, and my appearing and vanishing beyond all reckoning."剝這個虎皮，何為稀罕？"What is so remarkable about stripping the skin off this one tiger?"若到那疑難處，看展本事麼。」三藏聞得此言，愈加放懷無慮，策馬前行。"When we come to some real difficulty, you'll see my abilities on display." Hearing this, Sanzang felt all the more at ease and free of worry, and urged his horse onward.

两个前进，长老在马上问道：「悟空，你才打虎的铁棒，如何不见？」行者笑道：「师父，你不晓得。我这棍，本是东洋大海龙宫里得来的，唤做天河镇底神珍铁，又唤做如意金箍棒。当年大反天宫，甚是亏他。随身变化，要大就大，要小就小。刚才变做一个绣花针儿模样，收在耳内矣。但用时，方可取出。」三藏闻言暗喜。又问道：「方才那虎见了你，怎么就不动动？让你自在打他，何说？」悟空道：「不瞒师父说，莫道是只虎，就是一条龙，见了我也不敢无礼。我老孙颇有降龙伏虎的手段，翻江搅海的神通；见貌辨色，聆音察理；大之则量于宇宙，小之则摄于毫毛；变化无端，隐显莫测。剥这个虎皮，何为稀罕？若到那疑难处，看展本事么。」三藏闻得此言，愈加放怀无虑，策马前行。

師徒兩個走著路，說著話，不覺得太陽西墜。Master and disciple walked along, talking as they went, and before they knew it the sun was sinking in the west.但見：Behold:

师徒两个走著路，说著话，不觉得太阳西坠。但见：

行者道：「師父走動些，天色晚了。The Pilgrim said, "Master, walk a bit faster — it's getting late."那壁廂樹木森森，想必是人家莊院，我們趕早投宿去來。」三藏果策馬而行，徑奔人家，到了莊院前下馬。"Over there the trees grow thick and dense — that must be someone's farmstead; let's hurry over and find lodging." Sanzang did indeed urge his horse on, heading straight for the dwelling, and dismounted before the farmstead's gate.行者撇了行李，走上前，叫聲：「開門！The Pilgrim set down the luggage and stepped forward, calling out, "Open the door!"開門！」那裡面有一老者扶筇而出，唿喇的開了門。"Open the door!" From within, an old man came out leaning on a cane, and with a creak the door swung open.看見行者這般惡相，腰繫著一塊虎皮，好似個雷公模樣，諕得腳軟身麻，口出譫語道：「鬼來了！Seeing the Pilgrim's fearsome appearance, with a piece of tiger skin tied about his waist, looking just like the Thunder God, he was so frightened that his legs went weak and his body numb, and he babbled deliriously, "A demon has come!"鬼來了！」三藏近前攙住，叫道：「老施主休怕。"A demon has come!" Sanzang came forward and caught hold of him, saying, "Venerable patron, do not be afraid."他是我貧僧的徒弟，不是鬼怪。」老者擡頭，見了三藏的面貌清奇，方才立定，問道：「你是那寺裡來的和尚，帶這惡人上我門來？」三藏道：「我貧僧是唐朝來的，往西天拜佛求經。"He is my disciple, poor monk that I am — he is no demon." The old man raised his head, and seeing Sanzang's fine and unusual features, only then did he steady himself, and asked, "From what temple do you monks come, bringing this fierce fellow to my door?" Sanzang said, "This poor monk comes from the Tang court, bound for the Western Heaven to worship the Buddha and seek scriptures."適路過此間，天晚，特造檀府借宿一宵，明早不犯天光就行。"Passing by this place just now, with the day growing late, I have specially come to your worthy home to beg a night's lodging, and will set off again tomorrow before the sky is even fully light."萬望方便一二。」老者道：「你雖是個唐人，那個惡的卻非唐人。」悟空厲聲高呼道：「你這個老兒全沒眼色！"I earnestly beg you to grant us this small convenience." The old man said, "You may indeed be a man of Tang, but that fierce one is surely no man of Tang." Wukong called out sternly in a loud voice, "You old fellow have no eye for people at all!"唐人是我師父，我是他徒弟。"The man of Tang is my master, and I am his disciple."我也不是甚糖人，蜜人，我是齊天大聖！"And I'm no 'sugar man' or 'honey man' either — I am the Great Sage Equal to Heaven!"你們這裡人家，也有認得我的。"There are people in these parts who know me too."我也曾見你來。」那老者道：「你在那裡見我？」悟空道：「你小時不曾在我面前扒柴？"And I have seen you before as well." The old man said, "Where have you ever seen me?" Wukong said, "Did you not, when you were small, gather firewood right in front of me?"不曾在我臉上挑菜？」老者道：「這廝胡說！"Did you not pick vegetables right off my face?" The old man said, "This fellow talks nonsense!"你在那裡住？"Where do you live?"我在那裡住？"Where do I live?"我來你面前扒柴、挑菜？」悟空道：「我兒子便胡說。"Did I come and gather firewood and pick vegetables in front of you?" Wukong said, "It's my 'son' here who's talking nonsense."你是認不得我了，我本是這兩界山石匣中的大聖，你再認認看。」老者方才省悟道：「你倒有些像他。"You simply don't recognize me — I am originally the Great Sage from the stone casket on the Mountain of the Two Frontiers; look again and see." Only then did the old man come to a realization and say, "You do look somewhat like him."但你是怎麼得出來的？」悟空將菩薩勸善，令他等待唐僧揭帖脫身之事，對那老者細說了一遍。"But how did you manage to get out?" Wukong then told the old man in detail how the Bodhisattva had urged him toward goodness and had him wait for Tang Sanzang to lift the seal and free him.

行者道：「师父走动些，天色晚了。那壁厢树木森森，想必是人家庄院，我们赶早投宿去来。」三藏果策马而行，径奔人家，到了庄院前下马。行者撇了行李，走上前，叫声：「开门！开门！」那里面有一老者扶筇而出，唿喇的开了门。看见行者这般恶相，腰系著一块虎皮，好似个雷公模样，諕得脚软身麻，口出谵语道：「鬼来了！鬼来了！」三藏近前搀住，叫道：「老施主休怕。他是我贫僧的徒弟，不是鬼怪。」老者抬头，见了三藏的面貌清奇，方才立定，问道：「你是那寺里来的和尚，带这恶人上我门来？」三藏道：「我贫僧是唐朝来的，往西天拜佛求经。适路过此间，天晚，特造檀府借宿一宵，明早不犯天光就行。万望方便一二。」老者道：「你虽是个唐人，那个恶的却非唐人。」悟空厉声高呼道：「你这个老儿全没眼色！唐人是我师父，我是他徒弟。我也不是甚糖人，蜜人，我是齐天大圣！你们这里人家，也有认得我的。我也曾见你来。」那老者道：「你在那里见我？」悟空道：「你小时不曾在我面前扒柴？不曾在我脸上挑菜？」老者道：「这厮胡说！你在那里住？我在那里住？我来你面前扒柴、挑菜？」悟空道：「我儿子便胡说。你是认不得我了，我本是这两界山石匣中的大圣，你再认认看。」老者方才省悟道：「你倒有些像他。但你是怎么得出来的？」悟空将菩萨劝善，令他等待唐僧揭帖脱身之事，对那老者细说了一遍。

老者卻才下拜，將唐僧請到裡面，即喚老妻與兒女都來相見，具言前事，個個忻喜。Only then did the old man bow down, and invited Tang Sanzang inside, at once calling his old wife and children to come and meet them; he related the whole story to them, and everyone was delighted.又命看茶。He also gave orders for tea to be served.茶罷，問悟空道：「大聖啊，你也有年紀了？」悟空道：「你今年幾歲了？」老者道：「我痴長一百三十歲了。」行者道：「還是我重子重孫哩。When the tea was finished, he asked Wukong, "Great Sage, you must have quite an age by now?" Wukong said, "How old are you this year?" The old man said, "I have foolishly lived to one hundred and thirty years." The Pilgrim said, "Then you would still be my great-great-grandson."我那生身的年紀，我不記得是幾時；"As for the age of this body of mine, I no longer remember when it began;"但只在這山腳下，已五百餘年了。」老者道：「是有，是有。"but I have been beneath this mountain for more than five hundred years." The old man said, "Yes, indeed, that is so."我曾記得祖公公說，此山乃從天降下，就壓了一個神猴。"I recall my grandfather saying that this mountain fell down from Heaven, and that it pinned down a divine monkey beneath it."只到如今，你才脫體。"And only now, today, have you finally freed yourself from it."我那小時見你時，你頭上有草，臉上有泥，還不怕你；"When I saw you as a child, you had grass on your head and mud on your face, and even then I was not afraid of you;"如今臉上無了泥，頭上無了草，卻像瘦了些，腰間又苫了一塊大虎皮，與鬼怪能差多少？」一家兒聽得這般話說，都呵呵大笑。"but now there's no mud on your face and no grass on your head, though you look a bit thinner, and with that great tiger skin draped about your waist, how much different are you from a demon?" The whole household, hearing this, all burst out laughing.

老者却才下拜，将唐僧请到里面，即唤老妻与儿女都来相见，具言前事，个个忻喜。又命看茶。茶罢，问悟空道：「大圣啊，你也有年纪了？」悟空道：「你今年几岁了？」老者道：「我痴长一百三十岁了。」行者道：「还是我重子重孙哩。我那生身的年纪，我不记得是几时；但只在这山脚下，已五百余年了。」老者道：「是有，是有。我曾记得祖公公说，此山乃从天降下，就压了一个神猴。只到如今，你才脱体。我那小时见你时，你头上有草，脸上有泥，还不怕你；如今脸上无了泥，头上无了草，却像瘦了些，腰间又苫了一块大虎皮，与鬼怪能差多少？」一家儿听得这般话说，都呵呵大笑。

這老兒頗賢，即令安排齋飯。This old man was quite a worthy sort, and at once ordered a vegetarian meal to be prepared.飯後，悟空道：「你家姓甚？」老者道：「舍下姓陳。」三藏聞言，即下來起手道：「老施主與貧僧是華宗。」行者道：「師父，你是唐姓，怎的和他是華宗？」三藏道：「我俗家也姓陳，乃是唐朝海州弘農郡聚賢莊人氏。After the meal, Wukong asked, "What is your family's surname?" The old man said, "My humble house is surnamed Chen." Hearing this, Sanzang at once came forward with clasped hands and said, "Venerable patron, you and I, poor monk, share the same clan." The Pilgrim said, "Master, your surname is Tang — how can you share a clan with him?" Sanzang said, "In my lay family I too am surnamed Chen; I am a native of Juxian Village, Hongnong Prefecture, Haizhou, of the Tang dynasty."我的法名叫做陳玄奘。"My religious name is Chen Xuanzang."只因我大唐太宗皇帝賜我做御弟三藏，指唐為姓，故名唐僧也。」那老者見說同姓，又十分歡喜。"It is only because our Great Tang Emperor Taizong bestowed on me the honor of being his sworn brother, called Sanzang, and had me take Tang as my surname, that I am called Tang Seng." When the old man heard that they shared the same surname, he was all the more delighted.

这老儿颇贤，即令安排斋饭。饭后，悟空道：「你家姓甚？」老者道：「舍下姓陈。」三藏闻言，即下来起手道：「老施主与贫僧是华宗。」行者道：「师父，你是唐姓，怎的和他是华宗？」三藏道：「我俗家也姓陈，乃是唐朝海州弘农郡聚贤庄人氏。我的法名叫做陈玄奘。只因我大唐太宗皇帝赐我做御弟三藏，指唐为姓，故名唐僧也。」那老者见说同姓，又十分欢喜。

行者道：「老陳，左右打攪你家，我有五百多年不洗澡了，你可去燒些湯來，與我師徒們洗浴洗浴，一發臨行謝你。」那老兒即令燒湯拿盆，掌上燈火。The Pilgrim said, "Old Chen, since we're troubling your household anyway — I haven't bathed in over five hundred years. Could you heat up some water so that my master and I may wash ourselves? We'll thank you properly for everything when we leave." The old man at once ordered water to be heated and basins brought, and had the lamps lit.師徒浴罷，坐在燈前。When master and disciple had finished bathing, they sat before the lamp.行者道：「老陳，還有一事累你：有針線借我用用。」那老兒道：「有，有，有。」即教媽媽取針線來，遞與行者。The Pilgrim said, "Old Chen, there's one more thing to trouble you with: do you have needle and thread I might borrow?" The old man said, "Yes, yes, I do," and at once told his old wife to fetch needle and thread, which she handed to the Pilgrim.行者又有眼色，見師父洗浴，脫下一件白布短小直裰未穿，他即扯過來披在身上。The Pilgrim, being sharp-eyed as ever, noticed that when the master had bathed, he had taken off a short white cloth robe and not yet put it back on, so he pulled it over and draped it on himself.卻將那虎皮脫下，聯接一處。He then took off the tiger skin and stitched the two pieces together into one.打一個馬面樣的摺子，圍在腰間，勒了籐條，走到師父面前道：「老孫今日這等打扮，比昨日如何？」三藏道：「好，好，好。He folded it into pleats shaped like a horse-face skirt, wrapped it around his waist, and tied it with the vine cord, then went before the master and said, "How does Old Sun look, dressed like this today, compared to yesterday?" Sanzang said, "Good, good, good."這等樣，才像個行者。」三藏道：「徒弟，你不嫌殘舊，那件直裰兒，你就穿了罷。」悟空唱個喏道：「承賜，承賜。」他又去尋些草料喂了馬。"Dressed like this, you finally look like a proper Pilgrim." Sanzang said, "Disciple, if you don't mind that it's worn and old, you may just keep that robe and wear it." Wukong made a bow and said, "Much obliged, much obliged." He then went off to find some fodder to feed the horse.此時各各事畢，師徒與那老兒亦各歸寢。By this time everyone's tasks were done, and master, disciple, and the old man all retired to sleep.

行者道：「老陈，左右打搅你家，我有五百多年不洗澡了，你可去烧些汤来，与我师徒们洗浴洗浴，一发临行谢你。」那老儿即令烧汤拿盆，掌上灯火。师徒浴罢，坐在灯前。行者道：「老陈，还有一事累你：有针线借我用用。」那老儿道：「有，有，有。」即教妈妈取针线来，递与行者。行者又有眼色，见师父洗浴，脱下一件白布短小直裰未穿，他即扯过来披在身上。却将那虎皮脱下，联接一处。打一个马面样的折子，围在腰间，勒了籐条，走到师父面前道：「老孙今日这等打扮，比昨日如何？」三藏道：「好，好，好。这等样，才像个行者。」三藏道：「徒弟，你不嫌残旧，那件直裰儿，你就穿了罢。」悟空唱个喏道：「承赐，承赐。」他又去寻些草料喂了马。此时各各事毕，师徒与那老儿亦各归寝。

次早，悟空起來，請師父走路。Early the next morning, Wukong rose and asked the master to set off.三藏著衣，教行者收拾鋪蓋行李。Sanzang got dressed, and told the Pilgrim to pack up the bedding and luggage.正欲告辭，只見那老兒早具臉湯，又具齋飯。Just as they were about to take their leave, they saw that the old man had already prepared water for washing their faces, and a vegetarian meal as well.齋罷，方才起身。Only after the meal did they set out.三藏上馬，行者引路。Sanzang mounted the horse, and the Pilgrim led the way.不覺饑餐渴飲，夜宿曉行。Before they knew it, they were eating when hungry and drinking when thirsty, resting at night and traveling at dawn.又值初冬時候，但見那：And now it was the beginning of winter — behold:

次早，悟空起来，请师父走路。三藏著衣，教行者收拾铺盖行李。正欲告辞，只见那老儿早具脸汤，又具斋饭。斋罢，方才起身。三藏上马，行者引路。不觉饥餐渴饮，夜宿晓行。又值初冬时候，但见那：

師徒們正走多時，忽見路傍唿哨一聲，闖出六個人來，各執長槍短劍，利刃強弓，大咤一聲道：「那和尚那裡走！1. Master and disciple had been walking a long while when suddenly, at the roadside, there came a whistling shout, and out sprang six men, each wielding long spears and short swords, keen blades and strong bows, who bellowed loudly, "Where does that monk think he's going!趕早留下馬匹，放下行李，饒你性命過去。」諕得那三藏魂飛魄散，跌下馬來，不能言語。2. Hurry up and leave your horse, put down your baggage, and we'll spare your life to pass." This so terrified Sanzang that his soul scattered and his spirit fled; he tumbled off his horse, unable to speak.行者用手扶起道：「師父放心，沒些兒事，這都是送衣服送盤纏與我們的。」三藏道：「悟空，你想有些耳閉。3. Xingzhe helped him up with his hand, saying, "Set your mind at ease, Master, there's nothing to it — these fellows are just here to send us clothes and travel money." Sanzang said, "Wukong, I think your hearing must be failing.他說教我們留馬匹、行李，你倒問他要甚麼衣服、盤纏。」行者道：「你管守著衣服、行李、馬匹，待老孫與他爭持一場，看是何如。」三藏道：「好手不敵雙拳，雙拳不如四手。4. He said to leave behind our horse and baggage, yet you turn around and ask him for clothes and money instead." Xingzhe said, "You just keep watch over the clothes, baggage, and horse, and let old Sun go have a bout with him, and see how that turns out." Sanzang said, "A skilled hand cannot withstand two fists, and two fists are no match for four hands.他那裡六條大漢，你這般小小的一個人兒，怎麼敢與他爭持？」5. There are six great fellows over there, and you're such a small, slight person — how dare you contend with them?"

师徒们正走多时，忽见路傍唿哨一声，闯出六个人来，各执长枪短剑，利刃强弓，大咤一声道：「那和尚那里走！赶早留下马匹，放下行李，饶你性命过去。」諕得那三藏魂飞魄散，跌下马来，不能言语。行者用手扶起道：「师父放心，没些儿事，这都是送衣服送盘缠与我们的。」三藏道：「悟空，你想有些耳闭。他说教我们留马匹、行李，你倒问他要甚么衣服、盘缠。」行者道：「你管守著衣服、行李、马匹，待老孙与他争持一场，看是何如。」三藏道：「好手不敌双拳，双拳不如四手。他那里六条大汉，你这般小小的一个人儿，怎么敢与他争持？」

行者的膽量原大，那容分說，走上前來，叉手當胸，對那六個人施禮道：「列位有甚麼緣故，阻我貧僧的去路？」那人道：「我等是剪徑的大王，行好心的山主。6. Xingzhe's courage was naturally great, and without waiting to argue further, he strode forward, crossed his hands before his chest, and bowed to the six men, saying, "Gentlemen, for what reason do you block this poor monk's path?" The men said, "We are great kings of the highway, mountain lords who do good deeds.大名久播，你量不知。7. Our great names have long been spread abroad — you surely don't know them.早早的留下東西，放你過去；8. Leave your things behind at once, and we'll let you pass;若道半個『不』字，教你碎屍粉骨。」行者道：「我也是祖傳的大王，積年的山主，卻不曾聞得列位有甚大名。」那人道：「你是不知，我說與你聽：一個喚做眼看喜，一個喚做耳聽怒，一個喚做鼻嗅愛，一個喚作舌嘗思，一個喚作意見慾，一個喚作身本憂。」悟空笑道：「原來是六個毛賊。9. but if you utter so much as half a 'no,' we'll smash your bones to powder and your flesh to shreds." Xingzhe said, "I too am a hereditary great king, a mountain lord of many years' standing, yet I have never heard of any great names of yours." The man said, "You don't know, so let me tell you: one is called Eye that Delights in Seeing, one is called Ear that Rages at Hearing, one is called Nose that Loves to Smell, one is called Tongue that Craves to Taste, one is called Mind that Desires, and one is called Body that Grieves." Wukong laughed and said, "So you're six petty thieves after all.你卻不認得我這出家人是你的主人公，你倒來擋路。10. You fail to recognize that I, a monk who has left the household life, am your true master, yet you dare block my path instead.把那打劫的珍寶拿出來，我與你作七分兒均分，饒了你罷。」那賊聞言，喜的喜，怒的怒，愛的愛，思的思，慾的慾，憂的憂，一齊上前亂嚷道：「這和尚無禮。11. Bring out the treasures you've robbed, and I'll split them with you seven ways, and spare you." When the thieves heard this, the one for delight delighted, the one for rage raged, the one for love loved, the one for thought thought, the one for desire desired, and the one for grief grieved, and all together they rushed forward shouting wildly, "This monk is insolent.你的東西全然沒有，轉來和我等要分東西。」他掄槍舞劍，一擁前來，照行者劈頭亂砍，乒乒乓乓，砍有七八十下。12. You haven't a single thing of your own, yet you turn around and demand a share from us." They whirled their spears and swords about and surged forward as one, hacking wildly at Xingzhe's head, thwack after thwack, striking seventy or eighty blows.悟空停立中間，只當不知。13. Wukong stood still in their midst, acting as though he felt nothing.那賊道：「好和尚，真個的頭硬。」行者笑道：「將就看得過罷了。14. The thieves said, "What a monk — his head really is hard." Xingzhe laughed and said, "It'll do, more or less.你們也打得手困了，卻該老孫取出個針兒來耍耍。」那賊道：「這和尚是一個行針灸的郎中變的。15. You've all tired your hands out with beating — now old Sun ought to take out a little needle and have some fun." The thieves said, "This monk must be some acupuncture doctor transformed.我們又無病症，說甚麼動針的話？」16. We have no illness — what's this talk of needling?"

行者的胆量原大，那容分说，走上前来，叉手当胸，对那六个人施礼道：「列位有甚么缘故，阻我贫僧的去路？」那人道：「我等是剪径的大王，行好心的山主。大名久播，你量不知。早早的留下东西，放你过去；若道半个『不』字，教你碎尸粉骨。」行者道：「我也是祖传的大王，积年的山主，却不曾闻得列位有甚大名。」那人道：「你是不知，我说与你听：一个唤做眼看喜，一个唤做耳听怒，一个唤做鼻嗅爱，一个唤作舌尝思，一个唤作意见欲，一个唤作身本忧。」悟空笑道：「原来是六个毛贼。你却不认得我这出家人是你的主人公，你倒来挡路。把那打劫的珍宝拿出来，我与你作七分儿均分，饶了你罢。」那贼闻言，喜的喜，怒的怒，爱的爱，思的思，欲的欲，忧的忧，一齐上前乱嚷道：「这和尚无礼。你的东西全然没有，转来和我等要分东西。」他抡枪舞剑，一拥前来，照行者劈头乱砍，乒乒乓乓，砍有七八十下。悟空停立中间，只当不知。那贼道：「好和尚，真个的头硬。」行者笑道：「将就看得过罢了。你们也打得手困了，却该老孙取出个针儿来耍耍。」那贼道：「这和尚是一个行针灸的郎中变的。我们又无病症，说甚么动针的话？」

行者伸手去耳朵裡拔出一根繡花針兒，迎風一幌，卻是一條鐵棒，足有碗來粗細。17. Xingzhe reached into his ear and pulled out a fine embroidery needle, and with a shake against the wind it became an iron rod, fully as thick around as a rice bowl.拿在手中道：「不要走，也讓老孫打一棍兒試試手。」諕得這六個賊四散逃走。18. Holding it in his hand, he said, "Don't run off — let old Sun try his hand and give you a taste of this cudgel." This so terrified the six thieves that they scattered and fled in all directions.被他拽開步，團團趕上，一個個盡皆打死。19. But he strode out and chased them round and round, and struck every last one of them dead.剝了他的衣服，奪了他的盤纏，笑吟吟走將來道：「師父請行，那賊已被老孫剿了。」三藏道：「你十分撞禍。20. He stripped off their clothes and seized their travel money, then came back smiling and said, "Please continue on, Master — those thieves have already been wiped out by old Sun." Sanzang said, "You have brought a terrible disaster upon yourself.他雖是剪徑的強徒，就是拿到官司，也不該死罪；21. Though they were highway robbers, even if caught and brought to the authorities, they would not deserve death.你縱有手段，只可退他去便了，怎麼就都打死？22. Even with your skill, you should only have driven them off — why did you have to kill them all?這卻是無故傷人的性命，如何做得和尚？23. This is taking human life for no reason — how can this be the conduct of a monk?出家人掃地恐傷螻蟻命，愛惜飛蛾紗罩燈。24. One who has left the household sweeps the ground for fear of harming ants, and shields the lamp with gauze out of tenderness for moths.你怎麼不分皂白，一頓打死？25. How could you, without distinguishing right from wrong, beat them all to death in one stroke?全無一點慈悲好善之心。26. You have not a shred of compassion or goodness in you.早還是山野中無人查考；27. It is fortunate that this happened in the wild mountains where there is no one to investigate;若到城市，倘有人一時衝撞了你，你也行兇，執著棍子亂打傷人，我可做得白客，怎能脫身？」悟空道：「師父，我若不打死他，他卻要打死你哩。」三藏道：「我這出家人寧死，決不敢行兇。28. but if we reach a city, and someone should happen to bump into you, and you fly into a rage again and swing your cudgel about wounding people wildly, could I possibly plead your innocence then, and how would I extricate myself?" Xingzhe said, "Master, if I hadn't killed them, they would have killed you instead." Sanzang said, "I who have left the household would rather die than dare commit violence.我就死，也只是一身，你卻殺了他六人，如何理說？29. If I die, it is only one life lost, but you have killed six men — how is that to be explained?此事若告到官，就是你老子做官，也說不過去。」行者道：「不瞞師父說，我老孫五百年前，據花果山稱王為怪的時節，也不知打死多少人。30. If this matter were reported to the authorities, even if your own father were the magistrate, it could not be talked away." Xingzhe said, "I won't hide it from you, Master — five hundred years ago, when I held sway as king over Flower-Fruit Mountain and was reckoned a demon, there's no telling how many men I killed.假似你說這般到官，倒也得些狀告，我就做不到『齊天大聖』了。」三藏道：「只因你沒收沒管，暴橫人間，欺天誑上，才受這五百年前之難。31. If, as you say, such things were reported to the authorities every time, I'd have received no end of indictments, and I'd never have become the 'Great Sage Equal to Heaven.'" Sanzang said, "It was precisely because you had no restraint and no discipline, running wild and violent among men, defying Heaven and deceiving those above, that you suffered this five-hundred-year ordeal.今既入了沙門，若是還像當時行兇，一味傷生，去不得西天，做不得和尚。32. Now that you have entered the gate of Buddhism, if you still behave with such violence as before, forever taking life, you will never reach the Western Heaven, nor can you remain a monk.忒惡！33. How wicked!忒惡！」34. How wicked!"

行者伸手去耳朵里拔出一根绣花针儿，迎风一幌，却是一条铁棒，足有碗来粗细。拿在手中道：「不要走，也让老孙打一棍儿试试手。」諕得这六个贼四散逃走。被他拽开步，团团赶上，一个个尽皆打死。剥了他的衣服，夺了他的盘缠，笑吟吟走将来道：「师父请行，那贼已被老孙剿了。」三藏道：「你十分撞祸。他虽是剪径的强徒，就是拿到官司，也不该死罪；你纵有手段，只可退他去便了，怎么就都打死？这却是无故伤人的性命，如何做得和尚？出家人扫地恐伤蝼蚁命，爱惜飞蛾纱罩灯。你怎么不分皂白，一顿打死？全无一点慈悲好善之心。早还是山野中无人查考；若到城市，倘有人一时冲撞了你，你也行凶，执著棍子乱打伤人，我可做得白客，怎能脱身？」悟空道：「师父，我若不打死他，他却要打死你哩。」三藏道：「我这出家人宁死，决不敢行凶。我就死，也只是一身，你却杀了他六人，如何理说？此事若告到官，就是你老子做官，也说不过去。」行者道：「不瞒师父说，我老孙五百年前，据花果山称王为怪的时节，也不知打死多少人。假似你说这般到官，倒也得些状告，我就做不到『齐天大圣』了。」三藏道：「只因你没收没管，暴横人间，欺天诳上，才受这五百年前之难。今既入了沙门，若是还像当时行凶，一味伤生，去不得西天，做不得和尚。忒恶！忒恶！」

原來這猴子一生受不得人氣。35. Now this monkey had never in his life been able to bear being scolded.他見三藏只管緒緒叨叨，按不住心頭火發道：「你既是這等，說我做不得和尚，上不得西天，不必恁般絮聒惡我，我回去便了。」那三藏卻不曾答應。36. Seeing Sanzang go on and on nagging without end, he could not suppress the fire rising in his heart and said, "Since this is how it is, and you say I cannot be a monk, cannot reach the Western Heaven, there's no need to go on badgering and despising me so — I'll just go back." Sanzang, however, made no reply.他就使一個性子，將身一縱，說一聲：「老孫去也！」三藏急擡頭，早已不見。37. He then gave in to his temper, leapt up with his whole body, and said, "Old Sun is off!" Sanzang hastily raised his head, but he was already gone.只聞得呼的一聲，回東而去。38. All he heard was a whooshing sound as Wukong sped off toward the east.撇得那長老孤孤零零，點頭自歎，悲怨不已道：「這廝這等不受教誨，我但說他幾句，他怎麼就無形無影的徑回去了？39. This left the venerable monk all alone and forlorn; he nodded his head and sighed to himself, grieving and lamenting without end, "That fellow is so unwilling to accept instruction — I only said a few words to him, and how could he vanish without a trace and go straight back?罷罷罷，也是我命裡不該招徒弟，進人口。40. Well, well, well — it must be that fate never intended me to take a disciple, to gain another mouth to feed.如今欲尋他無處尋，欲叫他叫不應，去來，去來。」正是：捨身拚命歸西去，莫倚傍人自主張。41. Now if I wished to seek him, there would be nowhere to seek him; if I wished to call him, he would not answer my call. Let him go, then, let him go." Truly it is said: casting away the body, staking one's life, one presses on toward the West — one must not lean on others but must decide for oneself.

原来这猴子一生受不得人气。他见三藏只管绪绪叨叨，按不住心头火发道：「你既是这等，说我做不得和尚，上不得西天，不必恁般絮聒恶我，我回去便了。」那三藏却不曾答应。他就使一个性子，将身一纵，说一声：「老孙去也！」三藏急抬头，早已不见。只闻得呼的一声，回东而去。撇得那长老孤孤零零，点头自叹，悲怨不已道：「这厮这等不受教诲，我但说他几句，他怎么就无形无影的径回去了？罢罢罢，也是我命里不该招徒弟，进人口。如今欲寻他无处寻，欲叫他叫不应，去来，去来。」正是：舍身拼命归西去，莫倚傍人自主张。

那長老只得收拾行李，捎在馬上，也不騎馬，一隻手拄著錫杖，一隻手揪著韁繩，淒淒涼涼，往西前進。42. The venerable monk had no choice but to gather up the baggage, load it onto the horse, and, not riding it himself, walked on toward the west, holding his tin staff in one hand and leading the reins with the other, in utter desolation and misery.行不多時，只見山路前面有一個年高的老母，捧一件綿衣，綿衣上有一頂花帽。43. He had not gone far when he saw, ahead on the mountain road, an aged old woman holding a padded garment, on top of which lay an embroidered cap.三藏見他來得至近，慌忙牽馬，立於右側讓行。44. Seeing her draw quite near, Sanzang hastily pulled his horse aside and stood to the right of the road to let her pass.那老母問道：「你是那裡來的長老，孤孤恓恓獨行於此？」三藏道：「弟子乃東土大唐奉差往西天拜活佛求真經者。」老母道：「西方佛乃大雷音寺天竺國界，此去有十萬八千里路。45. The old woman asked, "Venerable master, where have you come from, walking here all alone and forlorn?" Sanzang said, "Your disciple is one sent by the Great Tang of the Eastern Land to journey to the Western Heaven to worship the Living Buddha and seek the true scriptures." The old woman said, "The Western Buddha dwells at the Great Thunderclap Monastery in the land of India, and it is a hundred and eight thousand li from here to there.你這等單人獨馬，又無個伴侶，又無個徒弟，你如何去得？」三藏道：「弟子日前收得一個徒弟，他性潑兇頑，是我說了他幾句，他不受教，遂渺然而去也。」老母道：「我有這一領綿布直裰、一頂嵌金花帽，原是我兒子用的，他只做了三日和尚，不幸命短身亡。46. How can you possibly get there, all alone with only a horse, with neither a companion nor a disciple?" Sanzang said, "A few days ago your disciple took on a disciple of his own, but his temper was fierce and unruly; I spoke a few words to him, and he would not accept the instruction, and so he vanished and left." The old woman said, "I happen to have this one padded cloth robe and one gold-inlaid flowered cap, which originally belonged to my son; he was a monk for only three days when, unfortunately, his life was cut short and he died.我才去他寺裡哭了一場，辭了他師父，將這兩件衣、帽拿來，做個憶念。47. I had just gone to his temple to weep a while, taken my leave of his master, and brought these two things, the robe and the cap, away with me as a keepsake.長老啊，你既有徒弟，我把這衣帽送了你罷。」三藏道：「承老母盛賜，但只是我徒弟已走了，不敢領受。」老母道：「他那廂去了？」三藏道：「我聽得呼的一聲，他回東去了。」老母道：「東邊不遠，就是我家，想必往我家去了。48. Venerable master, since you have a disciple, let me give this robe and cap to you." Sanzang said, "I am grateful for the venerable mother's generous gift, but since my disciple has already run off, I dare not accept it." The old woman said, "Where did he go?" Sanzang said, "I heard a whooshing sound, and he went off to the east." The old woman said, "The east is not far — my home is there. He must surely have gone to my house.我那裡還有一篇咒兒，喚做『定心真言』，又名做『緊箍兒咒』。49. I still have there a spell called the 'Mind-Steadying True Words,' also called the 'Tight-Fillet Spell.'你可暗暗的念熟，牢記心頭，再莫洩漏一人知道。50. You must memorize it silently, keep it firmly fixed in your heart, and never let a single soul know of it.我去趕上他，叫他還來跟你，你卻將此衣帽與他穿戴。51. I will go catch up with him and tell him to come back and follow you again, and then you shall put this robe and cap on him to wear.他若不服你使喚，你就默念此咒，他再不敢行兇，也再不敢去了。」三藏聞言，低頭拜謝。52. If he refuses to obey your bidding, you need only silently recite this spell, and he will never again dare act violently, nor will he ever dare run off again." Hearing this, Sanzang bowed his head and gave thanks.那老母化一道金光，回東而去。53. The old woman transformed into a beam of golden light and sped off toward the east.三藏情知是觀音菩薩授此真言，急忙撮土焚香，望東懇懇禮拜。54. Sanzang understood at once that this was the Bodhisattva Guanyin who had bestowed these true words upon him; he hastily scooped up earth to burn as incense, and bowed reverently toward the east.拜罷，收了衣帽，藏在包袱中間。55. When the bows were done, he put away the robe and cap, hiding them in the middle of his bundle.卻坐於路傍，誦習那定心真言，來回念了幾遍，念得爛熟，牢記心胸不題。56. He then sat down at the roadside and practiced reciting the Mind-Steadying True Words, repeating it over and over until he had it perfectly memorized, fixed firmly in his heart — but no more of that for now.

那长老只得收拾行李，捎在马上，也不骑马，一只手拄著锡杖，一只手揪著缰绳，凄凄凉凉，往西前进。行不多时，只见山路前面有一个年高的老母，捧一件绵衣，绵衣上有一顶花帽。三藏见他来得至近，慌忙牵马，立于右侧让行。那老母问道：「你是那里来的长老，孤孤恓恓独行于此？」三藏道：「弟子乃东土大唐奉差往西天拜活佛求真经者。」老母道：「西方佛乃大雷音寺天竺国界，此去有十万八千里路。你这等单人独马，又无个伴侣，又无个徒弟，你如何去得？」三藏道：「弟子日前收得一个徒弟，他性泼凶顽，是我说了他几句，他不受教，遂渺然而去也。」老母道：「我有这一领绵布直裰、一顶嵌金花帽，原是我儿子用的，他只做了三日和尚，不幸命短身亡。我才去他寺里哭了一场，辞了他师父，将这两件衣、帽拿来，做个忆念。长老啊，你既有徒弟，我把这衣帽送了你罢。」三藏道：「承老母盛赐，但只是我徒弟已走了，不敢领受。」老母道：「他那厢去了？」三藏道：「我听得呼的一声，他回东去了。」老母道：「东边不远，就是我家，想必往我家去了。我那里还有一篇咒儿，唤做『定心真言』，又名做『紧箍儿咒』。你可暗暗的念熟，牢记心头，再莫泄漏一人知道。我去赶上他，叫他还来跟你，你却将此衣帽与他穿戴。他若不服你使唤，你就默念此咒，他再不敢行凶，也再不敢去了。」三藏闻言，低头拜谢。那老母化一道金光，回东而去。三藏情知是观音菩萨授此真言，急忙撮土焚香，望东恳恳礼拜。拜罢，收了衣帽，藏在包袱中间。却坐于路傍，诵习那定心真言，来回念了几遍，念得烂熟，牢记心胸不题。

卻說那悟空別了師父，一觔斗雲，徑轉東洋大海。57. Now let us speak of Wukong, who, having left his master, rode a somersault cloud straight back to the Eastern Ocean.按住雲頭，分開水道，徑至水晶宮前。58. He brought his cloud down, parted the waters, and went straight to the Crystal Palace.早驚動龍王出來迎接，接至宮裡坐下。59. The startled Dragon King at once came out to greet him and led him inside the palace to sit down.禮畢，龍王道：「近聞得大聖難滿，失賀！60. After the courtesies were done, the Dragon King said, "I have recently heard that the Great Sage's ordeal has come to an end — I failed to offer my congratulations!想必是重整仙山，復歸古洞矣？」悟空道：「我也有此心性，只是又做了和尚了。」龍王道：「做甚和尚？」行者道：「我虧了南海菩薩勸善，教我正果，隨東土唐僧上西方拜佛，皈依沙門，又喚為行者了。」龍王道：「這等真是可賀，可賀。61. I suppose you must be reorganizing your immortal mountain and returning to your old cave once more?" Wukong said, "I too had that inclination in my heart, only now I have become a monk as well." The Dragon King said, "What sort of monk?" Xingzhe said, "Thanks to the Bodhisattva of the Southern Sea, who urged me toward goodness and taught me to attain the true fruit, I am now accompanying the Tang monk from the Eastern Land to worship the Buddha in the West, having taken refuge in the Buddhist gate, and I am now also called Xingzhe, the Pilgrim." The Dragon King said, "Why, this is truly cause for congratulation, cause for congratulation.這才叫做改邪歸正，懲創善心。62. This is what is called turning from evil back to righteousness, chastising oneself into goodness of heart.既如此，怎麼不西去，復東回何也？」行者笑道：「那是唐僧不識人性。63. But if that is so, why are you not heading west, but instead returning east?" Xingzhe laughed and said, "That's because the Tang monk doesn't understand human nature.有幾個毛賊剪徑，是我將他打死，唐僧就緒緒叨叨，說了我若干的不是。64. There were a few petty thieves blocking the road, and I killed them, and the Tang monk went on and on nagging at me, listing off all my faults.你想老孫可是受得悶氣的？65. Do you imagine old Sun is one to put up with such stifling grievance?是我撇了他，欲回本山，故此先來望你一望，求鍾茶吃。」龍王道：「承降，承降。」當時龍子、龍孫即捧香茶來獻。66. So I left him and meant to return to my own mountain, and that is why I came here first to pay you a visit, and to beg a cup of tea." The Dragon King said, "I am honored by your visit, honored indeed." At once the dragon sons and dragon grandsons brought forth fragrant tea to offer him.

却说那悟空别了师父，一觔斗云，径转东洋大海。按住云头，分开水道，径至水晶宫前。早惊动龙王出来迎接，接至宫里坐下。礼毕，龙王道：「近闻得大圣难满，失贺！想必是重整仙山，复归古洞矣？」悟空道：「我也有此心性，只是又做了和尚了。」龙王道：「做甚和尚？」行者道：「我亏了南海菩萨劝善，教我正果，随东土唐僧上西方拜佛，皈依沙门，又唤为行者了。」龙王道：「这等真是可贺，可贺。这才叫做改邪归正，惩创善心。既如此，怎么不西去，复东回何也？」行者笑道：「那是唐僧不识人性。有几个毛贼剪径，是我将他打死，唐僧就绪绪叨叨，说了我若干的不是。你想老孙可是受得闷气的？是我撇了他，欲回本山，故此先来望你一望，求钟茶吃。」龙王道：「承降，承降。」当时龙子、龙孙即捧香茶来献。

茶畢，行者回頭一看，見後壁上掛著一幅「圯橋進履」的畫兒。67. When the tea was finished, Xingzhe turned his head and happened to see, hanging on the back wall, a painting of "Presenting Shoes at Yi Bridge."行者道：「這是甚麼景致？」龍王道：「大聖在先，此事在後，故你不認得。68. Xingzhe said, "What scene is this?" The Dragon King said, "The Great Sage came before, and this event came after, so naturally you do not recognize it.這叫做『圯橋三進履』。」行者道：「怎的是『三進履』？」龍王道：「此仙乃是黃石公，此子乃是漢世張良，石公坐在圯橋上，忽然失履於橋下，遂喚張良取來。69. This is called 'Three Times Presenting Shoes at Yi Bridge.'" Xingzhe said, "How is it 'three times presenting shoes'?" The Dragon King said, "This immortal is Lord Yellow Stone, and this young man is Zhang Liang of the Han dynasty. Lord Yellow Stone was sitting on Yi Bridge when suddenly his shoe fell off down beneath the bridge, and so he called on Zhang Liang to fetch it for him.此子即忙取來，跪獻於前。70. The young man at once hurried to fetch it, and knelt to present it before him.如此三度，張良略無一毫倨傲怠慢之心，石公遂愛他勤謹，夜授天書，著他扶漢。71. This happened three times in all, and Zhang Liang never showed the slightest trace of pride or negligence, and so Lord Yellow Stone came to love him for his diligence and respectfulness, and at night bestowed on him a heavenly book, charging him to assist the Han.後果然運籌帷幄之中，決勝千里之外。72. Afterward, indeed, he devised strategies from within the command tent that secured victory a thousand li away.太平後，棄職歸山，從赤松子遊，悟成仙道。73. Once peace was achieved, he cast aside his office and retired to the mountains, where he wandered with Master Red Pine and attained enlightenment in the way of the immortals.大聖，你若不保唐僧，不盡勤勞，不受教誨，到底是個妖仙，休想得成正果。」悟空聞言，沉吟半晌不語。74. Great Sage, if you do not protect the Tang monk, do not exert your full diligence, and do not accept his instruction, in the end you will remain but a demon-immortal, and you may give up any hope of attaining the true fruit." Hearing this, Wukong fell silent, pondering for a long while without a word.龍王道：「大聖自當裁處，不可圖自在，誤了前程。」悟空道：「莫多話，老孫還去保他便了。」龍王忻喜道：「既如此，不敢久留，請大聖早發慈悲，莫要疏久了你師父。」75. The Dragon King said, "The Great Sage should judge for himself, and must not seek only his own ease and thereby ruin his future prospects." Wukong said, "Say no more — old Sun will go back and protect him after all." The Dragon King, delighted, said, "Since that is so, I dare not detain you long — I beg the Great Sage to show mercy at once, and not neglect your master too long."

茶毕，行者回头一看，见后壁上挂著一幅「圯桥进履」的画儿。行者道：「这是甚么景致？」龙王道：「大圣在先，此事在后，故你不认得。这叫做『圯桥三进履』。」行者道：「怎的是『三进履』？」龙王道：「此仙乃是黄石公，此子乃是汉世张良，石公坐在圯桥上，忽然失履于桥下，遂唤张良取来。此子即忙取来，跪献于前。如此三度，张良略无一毫倨傲怠慢之心，石公遂爱他勤谨，夜授天书，著他扶汉。后果然运筹帷幄之中，决胜千里之外。太平后，弃职归山，从赤松子游，悟成仙道。大圣，你若不保唐僧，不尽勤劳，不受教诲，到底是个妖仙，休想得成正果。」悟空闻言，沉吟半晌不语。龙王道：「大圣自当裁处，不可图自在，误了前程。」悟空道：「莫多话，老孙还去保他便了。」龙王忻喜道：「既如此，不敢久留，请大圣早发慈悲，莫要疏久了你师父。」

行者見他催促請行，急縱身，出離海藏，駕著雲，別了龍王。76. Seeing himself thus urged to be on his way, Xingzhe swiftly leapt up, left the sea palace, mounted his cloud, and took his leave of the Dragon King.正走，卻遇著南海菩薩。77. As he was on his way, he happened to meet the Bodhisattva of the Southern Sea.菩薩道：「孫悟空，你怎麼不受教誨，不保唐僧，來此處何幹？」慌得個行者在雲端裡施禮道：「向蒙菩薩善言，果有唐朝僧到，揭了壓帖，救了我命，跟他做了徒弟。78. The Bodhisattva said, "Sun Wukong, why have you not accepted instruction and protected the Tang monk — what business brings you here?" Startled, Xingzhe bowed in mid-air amid the clouds and said, "I am grateful for the Bodhisattva's kind words before — indeed a monk of the Tang came, lifted the seal-talisman, and saved my life, and I became his disciple.他卻怪我兇頑，我才閃他一閃，如今就去保他也。」菩薩道：「趕早去，莫錯過了念頭。」言畢各回。79. But he blamed me for being violent and unruly, so I merely slipped away for a moment, and now I am going back to protect him." The Bodhisattva said, "Hurry back, then, and do not let this resolve slip away." With that, each went their own way.

行者见他催促请行，急纵身，出离海藏，驾著云，别了龙王。正走，却遇著南海菩萨。菩萨道：「孙悟空，你怎么不受教诲，不保唐僧，来此处何干？」慌得个行者在云端里施礼道：「向蒙菩萨善言，果有唐朝僧到，揭了压帖，救了我命，跟他做了徒弟。他却怪我凶顽，我才闪他一闪，如今就去保他也。」菩萨道：「赶早去，莫错过了念头。」言毕各回。

這行者須臾間看見唐僧在路傍悶坐。80. In but a moment, Xingzhe caught sight of Tang Sanzang sitting by the roadside, sunk in gloom.他上前道：「師父，怎麼不走路？81. He came forward and said, "Master, why aren't you traveling on?還在此做甚？」三藏擡頭道：「你往那裡去來？82. What are you still doing here?" Sanzang raised his head and said, "Where have you been?教我行又不敢行，動又不敢動，只管在此等你。」行者道：「我往東洋大海老龍王家討茶吃吃。」三藏道：「徒弟啊，出家人不要說謊。83. You've left me not daring to walk on, not daring even to stir, just waiting here for you." Xingzhe said, "I went to the old Dragon King's home in the Eastern Ocean for a cup of tea." Sanzang said, "Disciple, one who has left the household should not tell lies.你離了我沒多一個時辰，就說到龍王家吃茶？」行者笑道：「不瞞師父說，我會駕觔斗雲，一個觔斗有十萬八千里路，故此得即去即來。」三藏道：「我略略的言語重了些兒，你就怪我，使個性子丟了我去。84. You have not been away from me for even a full hour — how can you say you already went to the Dragon King's home and drank tea?" Xingzhe laughed and said, "I won't hide it from you, Master — I know how to ride the somersault cloud, and a single somersault covers a hundred and eight thousand li, and that is how I can go and return in no time at all." Sanzang said, "I only spoke a little too sharply, and you took offense and gave in to your temper, abandoning me and going off.像你這有本事的，討得茶吃；85. Someone as capable as you can go and get tea to drink;像我這去不得的，只管在此忍餓。86. but someone like me, who cannot go anywhere, has had no choice but to sit here enduring hunger.你也過意不去呀。」行者道：「師父，你若餓了，我便去與你化些齋吃。」三藏道：「不用化齋，我那包袱裡還有些乾糧，是劉太保母親送的。87. You really ought to feel bad about that." Xingzhe said, "Master, if you're hungry, I'll go beg some food for you to eat." Sanzang said, "No need to beg for food — there is still some dry provisions in my bundle, given to us by Liu the Grand Guard's mother.你去拿缽盂尋些水來，等我吃些兒走路罷。」88. Go take the alms bowl and find some water, so that I may eat a little and then be on our way."

这行者须臾间看见唐僧在路傍闷坐。他上前道：「师父，怎么不走路？还在此做甚？」三藏抬头道：「你往那里去来？教我行又不敢行，动又不敢动，只管在此等你。」行者道：「我往东洋大海老龙王家讨茶吃吃。」三藏道：「徒弟啊，出家人不要说谎。你离了我没多一个时辰，就说到龙王家吃茶？」行者笑道：「不瞒师父说，我会驾觔斗云，一个觔斗有十万八千里路，故此得即去即来。」三藏道：「我略略的言语重了些儿，你就怪我，使个性子丢了我去。像你这有本事的，讨得茶吃；像我这去不得的，只管在此忍饿。你也过意不去呀。」行者道：「师父，你若饿了，我便去与你化些斋吃。」三藏道：「不用化斋，我那包袱里还有些干粮，是刘太保母亲送的。你去拿钵盂寻些水来，等我吃些儿走路罢。」

行者去解開包袱，在那包裹中間見有幾個粗麵燒餅，拿出來遞與師父。89. Xingzhe went and untied the bundle, and inside it found a few coarse wheat cakes, which he took out and handed to his master.又見那光豔豔的一領綿布直裰、一頂嵌金花帽。90. He also saw, gleaming brightly, a padded cloth robe and a gold-inlaid flowered cap.行者道：「這衣帽是東土帶來的？」三藏就順口兒答應道：「是我小時穿戴的。91. Xingzhe said, "Were this robe and cap brought from the Land of the East?" Sanzang answered smoothly at once, "These are what I wore as a child.這帽子若戴了，不用教經，就會念經；92. If one wears this cap, one need not be taught scripture — one will know how to recite it at once;這衣服若穿了，不用演禮，就會行禮。」行者道：「好師父，把與我穿戴了罷。」三藏道：「只怕長短不一，你若穿得，就穿了罷。」行者遂脫下舊白布直裰，將綿布直裰穿上，也就是比量著身體裁的一般。93. and if one wears this robe, one need not practice ceremony — one will know how to perform it at once." Xingzhe said, "Good Master, give it to me to wear then." Sanzang said, "I only fear it may not fit properly — if it does fit you, then go ahead and wear it." Xingzhe then took off his old white cloth robe and put on the padded cloth robe, and it fit as though it had been tailored exactly to his body.把帽兒戴上。94. He then put the cap on his head.三藏見他戴上帽子，就不吃乾糧，卻默默的念那緊箍咒一遍。95. Seeing him put on the cap, Sanzang stopped eating his dry provisions and silently began reciting the Tight-Fillet Spell once through.行者叫道：「頭痛，頭痛。」那師父不住的又念了幾遍，把個行者痛得打滾，抓破了嵌金的花帽。96. Xingzhe cried out, "My head hurts, my head hurts!" The master, without pausing, recited it several more times, and Xingzhe, in his agony, rolled about on the ground and clawed the gold-inlaid flowered cap until it tore.三藏又恐怕扯斷金箍，住了口不念。97. Fearing he might snap the golden fillet, Sanzang stopped his mouth and ceased reciting.不念時，他就不痛了。98. Once he stopped, the pain ceased at once.伸手去頭上摸摸，似一條金線兒模樣，緊緊的勒在上面，取不下，揪不斷，已此生了根了。99. Xingzhe reached up and felt around his head, and found something like a thin golden thread, bound tightly around it, which he could neither pull off nor tear apart — it had already taken root.他就耳裡取出針兒來，插入箍裡，往外亂捎。100. He then took the needle from his ear, inserted it into the fillet, and pried wildly to force it out.三藏又恐怕他捎斷了，口中又念起來。101. Fearing he might pry it apart, Sanzang began reciting again.他依舊生痛，痛得豎蜻蜓，翻觔斗，耳紅面赤，眼脹身麻。102. As before, the pain returned, so agonizing that he stood on his head, turned somersaults, his ears burned red and his face flushed, his eyes bulged and his body went numb.那師父見他這等，又不忍不捨，復住了口。103. Seeing him in such a state, the master could not bear it and, unable to go on, stopped his mouth once more.他的頭又不痛了。104. His head at once stopped hurting.行者道：「我這頭，原來是師父咒我的？」三藏道：「我念得是緊箍經，何曾咒你？」行者道：「你再念念看。」三藏真個又念。105. Xingzhe said, "This pain in my head — was it really you casting a spell on me, Master?" Sanzang said, "What I recited was the Tight-Fillet Sutra — when did I ever cast a spell on you?" Xingzhe said, "Recite it again and see." Sanzang did indeed recite it once more.行者真個又痛，只教：「莫念，莫念。106. Xingzhe indeed felt the pain again, and could only cry out, "Stop reciting, stop reciting!念動我就痛了。107. The moment you recite it, I feel the pain.這是怎麼說？」三藏道：「你今番可聽我教誨了？」行者道：「聽教了。」「你再可無禮了？」行者道：「不敢了。」108. What is the meaning of this?" Sanzang said, "Will you now accept my instruction?" Xingzhe said, "I will accept it." "And will you never again be so unruly?" Xingzhe said, "I dare not."

行者去解开包袱，在那包裹中间见有几个粗面烧饼，拿出来递与师父。又见那光艳艳的一领绵布直裰、一顶嵌金花帽。行者道：「这衣帽是东土带来的？」三藏就顺口儿答应道：「是我小时穿戴的。这帽子若戴了，不用教经，就会念经；这衣服若穿了，不用演礼，就会行礼。」行者道：「好师父，把与我穿戴了罢。」三藏道：「只怕长短不一，你若穿得，就穿了罢。」行者遂脱下旧白布直裰，将绵布直裰穿上，也就是比量著身体裁的一般。把帽儿戴上。三藏见他戴上帽子，就不吃干粮，却默默的念那紧箍咒一遍。行者叫道：「头痛，头痛。」那师父不住的又念了几遍，把个行者痛得打滚，抓破了嵌金的花帽。三藏又恐怕扯断金箍，住了口不念。不念时，他就不痛了。伸手去头上摸摸，似一条金线儿模样，紧紧的勒在上面，取不下，揪不断，已此生了根了。他就耳里取出针儿来，插入箍里，往外乱捎。三藏又恐怕他捎断了，口中又念起来。他依旧生痛，痛得竖蜻蜓，翻觔斗，耳红面赤，眼胀身麻。那师父见他这等，又不忍不舍，复住了口。他的头又不痛了。行者道：「我这头，原来是师父咒我的？」三藏道：「我念得是紧箍经，何曾咒你？」行者道：「你再念念看。」三藏真个又念。行者真个又痛，只教：「莫念，莫念。念动我就痛了。这是怎么说？」三藏道：「你今番可听我教诲了？」行者道：「听教了。」「你再可无礼了？」行者道：「不敢了。」

Though his mouth gave its assent, in his heart he still harbored ill will, and he gave the needle a shake, until it grew as thick as a rice bowl, intending to strike at Tang Sanzang.慌得長老口中又念了兩三遍。110. In alarm, the venerable monk recited the spell two or three more times.這猴子跌倒在地，丟了鐵棒，不能舉手，只教：「師父，我曉得了。111. The monkey fell to the ground, dropped his iron rod, and could not even raise his hand, and could only cry, "Master, I understand now!再莫念，再莫念。」三藏道：「你怎麼欺心，就敢打我？」行者道：「我不曾敢打。112. Don't recite it again, don't recite it again!" Sanzang said, "How could your heart be so deceitful, that you would dare strike me?" Xingzhe said, "I never dared to strike you.我問師父，你這法兒是誰教你的？」三藏道：「是適間一個老母傳授我的。」行者大怒道：「不消講了，這個老母，坐定是那個觀世音。113. Let me ask you, Master — who taught you this spell?" Sanzang said, "It was an old woman who taught it to me just a while ago." Xingzhe flew into a rage and said, "Say no more — that old woman must certainly have been none other than Guanyin of the South Sea!他怎麼那等害我？114. Why would she torment me so?等我上南海打他去。」三藏道：「此法既是他授與我，他必然先曉得了。115. Let me go to the South Sea and give her a beating." Sanzang said, "Since it was she who bestowed this method upon me, she must surely know of it beforehand already.你若尋他，他念起來，你卻不是死了？」行者見說得有理，真個不敢動身，只得回心，跪下哀告道：「師父，這是他奈何我的法兒，教我隨你西去。116. If you go seeking her out, and she simply recites the spell, would you not then be dead?" Xingzhe, hearing this made sense, truly did not dare set out, and instead changed his mind, and knelt down pleading pitifully, "Master, this is a device she used to master me, to make me follow you to the West.我也不去惹他，你也莫當常言，只管念誦。117. I will not go provoke her, and you, for your part, must not treat this lightly and go about reciting it at every turn.我願保你，再無退悔之意了。」三藏道：「既如此，伏侍我上馬去也。」那行者才死心塌地，抖擻精神，束一束綿布直裰，扣背馬匹，收拾行李，奔西而進。118. I am willing to protect you, and I shall never again think of turning back or giving up." Sanzang said, "Since that is so, help me mount the horse and let us go." Only then did Xingzhe settle his heart completely, and rousing his spirits, he cinched up his padded cloth robe, saddled and bridled the horse, gathered up the baggage, and pressed onward toward the west.
