The Dragon of Eagle's Sorrow Stream Becomes the White Horse

015Chapter 15

西The story goes that Xingzhe served Tang Seng as they journeyed westward, and after several days' travel, it was now the cold weather of the twelfth month, with the north wind biting keen and the ice-glaze slick underfoot. They walked along paths of sheer cliffs and precipitous rock, over ranges of folded peaks and dangerous mountains.:「?」:「。」Sanzang, on his horse, heard from afar a rushing, roaring sound of water assailing his ears, and turned to call out, "Wukong, what water is that sounding over there?" Xingzhe said, "I recall this place is called Yingchou Ravine on Snake-Coil Mountain; it must be the sound of water in the ravine." Before he had finished speaking, the horse had reached the edge of the ravine, and the elder reined in to look. What they saw was this:

Just as master and disciple were looking, suddenly the middle of the ravine gave a great roar, and out shot a dragon, churning the waves and hurling up the billows, bursting out from the cliffside straight to seize the elder.便In alarm Xingzhe threw down the luggage, snatched his master down off the horse, and turned to flee. The dragon could not catch up with them, so it swallowed the white horse, saddle, bridle and all, in one gulp, and sank back down into hiding beneath the water.Xingzhe set his master down to sit upon a high mound, then went back to lead the horse and shoulder the load, only to find just the one pack of luggage remaining — the horse was nowhere to be seen.:「。」:「?」:「。」He brought the pack of luggage before his master and said, "Master, that wretched dragon has vanished without a trace too, but it has frightened away my horse." Sanzang said, "Disciple, ah, however shall we find the horse now?" Xingzhe said, "Set your mind at ease, set your mind at ease; let me go and have a look."

He gave a whistle, leapt into the air, and with his fiery golden eyes shaded by his hand like a visor, looked all about in every direction, but still saw no trace of the horse.:「。」:「Bringing his cloud down, he reported, "Master, our horse has certainly been eaten by that dragon; I've looked all around and there's no sign of it anywhere." Sanzang said, "Disciple, ah, how large a mouth could that creature have, to swallow down a whole big horse, saddle, bridle and all?Perhaps it was startled and bolted, slipping its reins, and has run off into some mountain hollow.。」:「Look again more carefully." Xingzhe said, "You don't know my abilities. With these two eyes of mine, in broad daylight I can see a thousand li of good and ill fortune.?」:「Even a dragonfly spreading its wings a thousand li off, I would see it — how could it be that a whole big horse escapes my sight?" Sanzang said, "If it really has eaten the horse, how am I to go forward??」Pitiful indeed — these thousand mountains and ten thousand rivers, how am I ever to walk them?" So saying, his tears fell like rain.:「便。」:「Seeing him break into weeping, Xingzhe could not hold back his hot temper, and cried out in a loud voice, "Master, don't be so soft and spineless! Sit here, just sit here, and let old Sun go find that wretch and make him give back my horse, that's all." But Sanzang caught hold of him and said, "Disciple, ah, where would you go to find him? What if he should burst out at you secretly from hiding, and then even I would be done for along with the horse??」:「Then with both man and horse gone, what good would that do?" Hearing this, Xingzhe grew all the angrier, and shouted like thunder, "You are just too hopeless, too hopeless!。」You want a horse to ride, yet you won't let me go — if I just sit here watching the luggage like this, we'll sit here till we're old."

:「He was grumbling and growling, in no mood to let his anger cool, when suddenly he heard a voice in the air calling out, "Great Sage Sun, do not be angry; Imperial Brother Tang, do not weep.。」We are a company of spirits sent by Bodhisattva Guanyin, come specially to protect the scripture-seeker in secret." On hearing this, the elder hastily bowed in worship.:「。」:「。」:「?」:「Xingzhe said, "Which ones are you? Report your names, so I may take the roll." The gods said, "We are the Six Dings and Six Jias, the揭諦 (Guardians) of the Five Directions, the Duty Officers of the Four Watches, and the eighteen Protectors of the Faith of the sangharamas, each taking turns on duty to attend and wait." Xingzhe said, "Whose turn is it today, to begin with?" The Guardians said, "The Dings and Jias, the Duty Officers, and the sangharama spirits take turns in order.。」:「退Among the Five Guardians of the Directions, only the Golden-Headed Guardian never leaves your side day or night." Xingzhe said, "In that case, those not on duty may withdraw; let the Six Ding spirit-generals stay along with today's Duty Officer and the Guardians to protect my master.。」Let old Sun go find that wretched dragon in the ravine and make him give back my horse." The assembled gods obeyed the order.Only then did Sanzang set his mind at rest, and sat himself down upon the rocky cliff, bidding Xingzhe to be careful.:「。」綿:「Xingzhe said, "Just set your heart at ease." The fine Monkey King cinched tight his cotton robe, hitched up his tiger-skin skirt, gripped his gold-banded iron cudgel, shook himself into full spirit, and went straight to the ravine, half riding on cloud and mist, and called out over the water's surface in a loud voice, "You rascally loach, give me back my horse!!」Give me back my horse!"

Now, the story goes that after the dragon had eaten Sanzang's white horse, it lay hidden in the middle of the ravine bed, nursing its hidden spirit and cultivating its nature, when it heard someone cursing and demanding a horse.:「?」!」It could not suppress the fire rising in its heart, and swiftly leapt up, splitting the waves and turning over the billows, springing up and saying, "Who dares to boast so wildly here and insult me?" Seeing it, Xingzhe let out a great shout, "Don't run! Give me back my horse!" and swinging his cudgel, struck straight at its head. The dragon bared its fangs and clawed with its talons to seize him.The two of them fought a fierce battle there before the ravine, and truly it was a display of valor. What they saw was this:

Back and forth they went, fighting for a good long while, circling round and round for a great stretch, until the dragon's strength failed and its sinews grew weak, unable to resist any longer; with a twist of its body it plunged back into the water, sinking deep to the bottom of the ravine, and would not come up again. The Monkey King cursed and railed without stopping, but the dragon simply pretended to be deaf.

:「。」:「?」:「?」:「便?」Having no other recourse, Xingzhe had to go back and see Sanzang, saying, "Master, I cursed that monster out, and it fought with me for a good while, but then, afraid to fight on, it fled and hid in the middle of the water, and will not come out again." Sanzang said, "We still don't know for certain whether it was really he who ate my horse." Xingzhe said, "Listen to what you're saying — if he hadn't eaten it, would he still be willing to come out and pick a fight with old Sun?" Sanzang said, "The other day when you fought the tiger, you said you had the skill to subdue dragons and tame tigers; why is it that today you cannot subdue him?" As it happened, this monkey could never bear to be pressed hard by anyone.:「。」Seeing that Sanzang had thrown this rebuke at him, he summoned up his divine might and said, "Say no more, say no more! Let me go have another round with him and settle who comes out on top."

So the Monkey King strode off and leapt to the edge of the ravine, and using his divine power to overturn rivers and stir up seas, he churned the crystal-clear waters of Yingchou Ravine, deep and sheer as they were, until they surged like the flood-tide waves of the nine-bend Yellow River.:「The wretched dragon, unable to sit or lie still in the deep ravine, thought to himself, "Truly, blessings never come in pairs, but misfortunes never come singly.。」:「?」:「。」:「I have only just escaped death for breaking Heaven's law, and not a year has passed since, living here as fortune allows, when I run into some such savage fiend come to do me harm." The more he thought of it, the angrier he grew, and unable to bear the humiliation, he gritted his teeth and leapt out, cursing, "Where do you come from, you savage fiend, bullying me like this?" Xingzhe said, "Never mind where I come from or don't come from — just give back the horse, and I'll spare your life." The dragon said, "Your horse I have swallowed down into my belly — how could I spit it back out?便?」便。」If I don't give it back, what will you do about it?" Xingzhe said, "If you won't return the horse, then look out for my cudgel — I'll simply beat you to death and that will pay for my horse's life." The two of them fought bitterly again there beneath the mountain cliff. They had not fought many bouts when the little dragon, truly unable to withstand him, gave a shake of his body and turned into a water snake, and slithered into the underbrush.

The Monkey King, cudgel in hand, chased after him, parting the grass to search for the snake, but found not the slightest trace.:「。」:「。」 :「?」:「。」:「In his frustration, all three of his corpse-spirits raged and smoke seemed to rise from his seven orifices; he recited the syllable "Om" as a spell, and at once summoned the local Deity of the Soil and the mountain god of the region, who both came and knelt down, saying, "The mountain god and the local deity have come to see you." Xingzhe said, "Hold out your shinbones — I'll give each of you five strokes of the cudgel by way of introduction, just to vent my feelings a bit." The two gods kowtowed and pleaded, "We beg the Great Sage to be lenient, and allow your lowly spirits to explain." Xingzhe said, "What have you to say?" The two gods said, "The Great Sage has long been confined, and your lowly spirits did not know when you would emerge, and so failed to come and welcome you — we beg forgiveness for the offense." Xingzhe said, "Very well then, I won't beat you for now.Let me ask you: this evil dragon in Yingchou Ravine, where does it come from??」:「?」:「How did it come to seize and eat my master's white horse?" The two gods said, "The Great Sage has never had a master until now — you were originally a primordial being who bowed to neither Heaven nor Earth; how could you suddenly have a master with a horse?" Xingzhe said, "You two don't know the story. For that business of deceiving my superiors, I suffered a full five hundred years of punishment.西Now, thanks to Bodhisattva Guanyin's exhortation to virtue, a true monk under the Tang court's command came and rescued me, bidding me follow him as his disciple and go to the Western Heaven to worship the Buddha and seek the scriptures.。」:「Passing through this place on our way, I lost my master's white horse." The two gods said, "So that's how it is.This ravine has never had anything evil in it before; it is simply so deep, steep, wide and broad, with water so clear you can see straight to the bottom, that even crows and magpies dare not fly across it —便』。because seeing their own reflections in the clear water, they take them for birds of their own kind, and often cast themselves down into the water: hence it is named 'Yingchou Doujian,' the Hawk-Fearing Sheer Ravine. It is only that in years past, Bodhisattva Guanyin, on her way seeking out one to fetch the scriptures, rescued a jade dragon and placed him here, bidding him wait for the scripture-seeker, and forbidding him to do any evil.鹿He would only, when hungry, come up onto the bank to catch a few birds or magpies to eat, or sometimes catch some roe deer or deer for food.。」:「We do not know how he could be so ignorant as to offend the Great Sage today." Xingzhe said, "The first time, he still traded blows with old Sun, circling through several bouts;the second time, old Sun cursed and railed at him, but he would not come out again at all.使So I used a trick of overturning rivers and stirring up seas, churning up the water of his ravine until it was muddied, and then he sprang up again, still wanting to contend. Not knowing how heavy old Sun's cudgel is, he could not fend it off, and so turned into a water snake and slithered into the grass.。」:「I chased after him to find him, but there was no trace at all." The local deity said, "The Great Sage does not know. This ravine has thousands upon thousands of holes and channels all connected to one another, which is why its waters run so deep and far.It is likely there is some hole here through which he has slipped down. There is no need for the Great Sage to grow angry searching about here;。」to capture this creature, you need only invite Bodhisattva Guanshiyin here, and he will naturally submit."

Hearing this, Xingzhe summoned the mountain god and the local deity, and together they went to see Sanzang and related the whole matter in full.:「Sanzang said, "If we are to go and invite the Bodhisattva, how long before she could return??」:「。」:「How can this poor monk endure the hunger and cold?" Before he had finished speaking, they heard the Golden-Headed Guardian calling out from the dark air, "Great Sage, there is no need for you to set out yourself; your lowly spirit will go and invite the Bodhisattva here." Xingzhe was overjoyed, and said, "I am in your debt, in your debt.。」Go quickly, go quickly." The Guardian at once sped off on his cloud, straight for the South Sea.Xingzhe bade the mountain god and local deity guard his master, sent the day's Duty Officer off to find alms of food, and himself went off to patrol around the edge of the ravine — but no more of that for now.

Now the story goes that the Golden-Headed Guardian, riding his cloud, soon reached the South Sea.Bringing down his auspicious light, he went straight to the Purple Bamboo Grove on Mount Potalaka, and through the golden-armored heavenly guardians and Mucha Hui'an conveyed his request, and so obtained an audience with the Bodhisattva.:「?」:「退The Bodhisattva said, "What have you come for?" The Guardian said, "Tang Seng, at Yingchou Sheer Ravine on Snake-Coil Mountain, has lost his horse, and Great Sage Sun is at his wits' end, unable to advance or retreat. On questioning the local spirit of the place, he learned that the evil dragon the Bodhisattva placed in the ravine had swallowed it.。」 The Great Sage has sent your lowly spirit to beg the Bodhisattva to come and subdue this evil dragon, and have him return the horse." On hearing this, the Bodhisattva said, "This creature is originally the son of Ao Run, King of the West Sea; because he set fire and burned the bright pearl in the palace hall, his father accused him of unfilial rebellion, and in the courts of Heaven he was condemned to death. It was I myself who saw the Jade Emperor and pleaded for his release, that he might serve as a mount for the Tang monk. How could he instead have eaten the Tang monk's horse?。」Since this is so, let me go there." The Bodhisattva then descended from her lotus throne, left the immortal cave straight away, and mounting the auspicious light together with the Guardian, crossed the South Sea and came to that place. There is a poem as proof. The poem says:

Before long, the Bodhisattva and the Guardian arrived at Snake-Coil Mountain, and paused their auspicious cloud in mid-air, looking down, where they saw Sun Xingzhe right at the edge of the ravine, cursing and railing. The Bodhisattva bade the Guardian summon him up.:「。」:「?」:「The Guardian brought his cloud down, and without passing by Sanzang, went straight to the edge of the ravine and said to Xingzhe, "The Bodhisattva has come." On hearing this, Xingzhe swiftly sprang up on his cloud into the air, and shouted loudly at her, "You, teacher of the Seven Buddhas, compassionate lord of the faith — why have you devised such a scheme to harm me?" The Bodhisattva said, "You bold, brazen horse-plague of a monkey, you rustic red-buttocked fool!?」:「I went to such great pains, again and again, to secure a scripture-seeker, and expressly charged him to save your life — why is it you do not come to thank me for the favor of saving your life, but instead come to rail and quarrel at me?" Xingzhe said, "A fine thing you've done to me indeed.便Since you had already set me free, you should have let me roam about at ease and enjoy myself, and left it at that.便The other day at sea you met me and rebuked me with a few words, telling me to serve the Tang monk with all my heart and strength — that would have been well enough. But why did you send him a flowered cap, tricking me into putting it on my own head to suffer for it?』,?」:「That band has grown fast onto old Sun's head, and you also taught him a certain 'Tight-Fillet Spell' for him to recite over and over, making my head ache again and again — is this not you doing me harm?" The Bodhisattva laughed and said, "You monkey — if you would not obey instruction, nor accept the true fruits of enlightenment, and if I did not restrain you like this, you would again deceive your superiors and defy Heaven, with no notion of good or ill.Should you again bring disaster upon yourself as you did before, who would there be to take charge of you and rein you in?。」:「Only by means of this affliction will you ever consent to enter the gateway of my Yoga teaching." Xingzhe said, "Well, let's leave that matter as my own affliction to bear, so be it.But why did you also take that guilty, sinning dragon and place him here to become a spirit, letting him eat my master's horse?。」:「This too is releasing a wicked creature to do evil — hardly a virtuous act." The Bodhisattva said, "That dragon — it was I myself who petitioned the Jade Emperor and obtained him to be placed here, expressly to serve as a mount for the scripture-seeker.Consider — how could an ordinary mortal horse from the Land of the East ever cross these ten thousand rivers and a thousand mountains? How could it ever reach the sacred ground of Vulture Peak?。」:「?」:「。』。」Only with this dragon-horse can the journey be made." Xingzhe said, "Seeing how afraid he is of old Sun, hiding away and refusing to come out, what is to be done?" The Bodhisattva called to the Guardian, "Go to the edge of the ravine and call out once, 'Ao Run Dragon King's Third Prince, Jade Dragon, come out — the Bodhisattva of the South Sea is here.' Then he will come out."

So the Guardian indeed went to the edge of the ravine and called out twice.:「。」:「?」:「The little dragon turned the waves and leapt up out of the water, transforming into a human shape, and treading a cloud, rose into the air to bow before the Bodhisattva, saying, "Long have I been grateful to the Bodhisattva for the favor of freeing me and saving my life; I have waited here a long while, but have never heard any news of the scripture-seeker." The Bodhisattva pointed at Xingzhe and said, "Is this not the senior disciple of the scripture-seeker?" On seeing him, the little dragon said, "Bodhisattva, this is my adversary.Yesterday, being hungry in my belly, it is true I ate his horse.Relying on his considerable strength, he fought me until I was cowed and had to retreat, and then cursed me until I dared not come out of my gate.。」:「?」:「He never once so much as mentioned the words 'fetching the scriptures.'" Xingzhe said, "And you never once asked me my name and surname either — how was I to say it?" The little dragon said, "Did I not ask you where you, savage fiend, had come from?:『。』?」:「You shouted back, 'Never mind where I come from or don't come from, just give me back my horse.' When did you ever utter so much as half the word 'Tang'?" The Bodhisattva said, "That monkey-head relies entirely on his own strength, and is never willing to give credit to another. From now on, going forward, there will yet be others who submit to you in the same way.。」When you question them, mention the words 'fetching the scriptures' first, and there will be no need to trouble yourself — they will naturally submit and yield."

Xingzhe joyfully accepted this instruction.:「!」The Bodhisattva stepped forward and removed the bright pearl from beneath the little dragon's neck, dipped a willow twig in sweet dew, sprinkled it over his body, breathed out a breath of immortal energy, and cried out, "Change!" — and the dragon at once transformed into the very same coat and markings as the original horse.:「。」She then further charged him, saying, "You must give your whole heart to repaying for your past transgression; when your merit is achieved, you shall be raised above the ranks of ordinary dragons, and I will grant you the true fruit of a golden body." The little dragon, holding the bit crosswise in his mouth, took this to heart and accepted with all sincerity.。「。」:「The Bodhisattva bade Wukong lead him to see Sanzang. "I shall return now to the sea." Xingzhe caught hold of the Bodhisattva and would not let go, saying, "I won't go, I won't go.西The road west is so rugged and perilous — escorting this mortal monk, when shall we ever arrive? With so much torment and so many setbacks as this, even old Sun's own life can hardly be kept whole — how then could I ever achieve any merit at all?。」:「I won't go, I won't go." The Bodhisattva said, "In the years before you had attained human form, you were yet willing to devote your whole heart to cultivation and awakening;now that you have escaped the calamity of Heaven, why instead do you grow lazy?In my teaching, one attains truth through utter stillness and extinction, and must have faith to reach the true fruit of enlightenment.Should you ever come to a place of such suffering and hardship that your very body is in danger, I promise you that if you call upon Heaven, Heaven shall answer, and if you call upon Earth, Earth shall respond;and should you come to the direst extremity, from which there seems no escape, I myself will come in person to save you.。」:「!」Come here — I will give you one more ability besides." The Bodhisattva plucked three leaves from her willow branch, placed them at the back of Xingzhe's head, and cried, "Change!" — and they at once turned into three life-saving hairs.:「。」She instructed him, "Should you come to a moment of utter helplessness with no one to turn to, you may use these to adapt to the circumstance and save yourself from urgent disaster." Having heard all these kind words, Xingzhe at last gave thanks to the great, compassionate Bodhisattva. The Bodhisattva then, wreathed in fragrant breeze and trailing wisps of colored mist, turned straight back to Putuo and departed.

:「。」:「Xingzhe now brought his cloud down, took hold of the dragon-horse by its mane, and went to see Sanzang, saying, "Master, the horse has been found." The moment Sanzang saw it, he was overjoyed and said, "Disciple, why does this horse look even more sleek and sturdy than before??」:「Where did you find it?" Xingzhe said, "Master, you are still dreaming.Just now the Golden-Headed Guardian invited the Bodhisattva here, and she transformed the dragon of the ravine into our white horse, matching its coat and markings exactly — only it is missing the saddle and bridle.。」:「She had old Sun bring it here." Sanzang was greatly astonished, and said, "Where is the Bodhisattva now?。」:「。」Let me go and bow in thanks to her." Xingzhe said, "The Bodhisattva has already reached the South Sea by now — there's no need to trouble yourself." So Sanzang gathered a pinch of earth to burn as incense, and bowed in worship facing south.Once the bowing was done, he rose at once and, together with Xingzhe, packed up to continue on their way.退Xingzhe shouted the Mountain God and Local Deity into retreat, gave instructions to the Guardians and Duty Officers, and then asked Master to mount his horse.:「Sanzang said, "How can I ride a horse without saddle or bridle?。」:「Let's wait to find a boat to cross the ravine, and decide what to do then." Xingzhe said, "This master really doesn't understand how things stand!Out here in this wild mountain wilderness, where would a boat come from?。」This horse has lived here a long time and must know the currents — just ride him across like a boat."

Sanzang had no choice but to follow his suggestion, and mounted the bare-backed horse.Xingzhe carried the luggage on a pole. They arrived at the edge of the ravine.Just then, from upstream, an old fisherman came poling a raft of dead wood downstream.:「When Xingzhe saw him, he waved and called out, "Old fisherman, come here, come here.。」I am going to fetch scriptures from the Land of the East, and my master is having trouble crossing here — come ferry him across." Hearing this, the fisherman quickly poled his raft over.Xingzhe asked Master to dismount, and supported him on either side.Sanzang got onto the raft, pulled the horse aboard, and set the luggage in place.西The old fisherman pushed off with the raft, swift as wind and arrow, and before they knew it they had crossed Eagle's Sorrow Gorge and reached the western bank.Sanzang told Xingzhe to untie the bundle and take out a few coins of Great Tang currency to give to the old fisherman.:「。」The old fisherman gave the raft a push with his pole and said, "No need for money, no need for money," and drifted away into the vast midstream, growing faint in the distance.Sanzang felt very uneasy about it, and kept pressing his palms together to express his thanks.:「Xingzhe said, "Master, don't bother thanking him — don't you recognize him?He is the water god of this ravine. He failed to come out and receive old Sun properly, and old Sun still means to give him a beating.!」西As it is, letting him off without a beating is favor enough for him — how would he dare ask for money!" Master, half-believing and half-doubting, had no choice but to mount the bare-backed horse again and follow Xingzhe straight onto the main road, heading west. This is just as the verse says: Vast and boundless Suchness carries one to the other shore; with a sincere heart and enlightened nature, one climbs to Vulture Peak.

Master and disciples pressed onward together, and before they knew it the red sun was sinking in the west and daylight was fading.Behold:

Sanzang, gazing from atop his horse, suddenly caught sight of a manor house beside the road.:「宿。」:「。」:「?」:「。」Sanzang said, "Wukong, there's a household ahead — we can beg a night's lodging there and set off again in the morning." Xingzhe raised his head, looked, and said, "Master, that's not a household's manor." Sanzang said, "How is it not?" Xingzhe said, "A household's manor wouldn't have ridge-beasts of flying fish on its roof — this must certainly be a temple or shrine."

As master and disciples were talking, they had already arrived at the gate.」,Sanzang dismounted, and saw three large characters over the gate reading "Shrine of the Village Earth God," and so they went in through the gate.:「。」殿Inside there was an old man with prayer beads hanging around his neck, who came out with palms pressed together to greet them, calling, "Master, please be seated." Sanzang hurriedly returned the courtesy, then went up into the hall to pay respects before the sacred image. The old man at once called a boy to serve tea.:「』?」:「西When the tea was finished, Sanzang asked the old man, "Why is this temple called a 'village shrine'?" The old man said, "This humble place lies within the borders of the Western Fan kingdom of Habi.Behind this temple there is a village of households who together, out of devout hearts, built this shrine.'Li' refers to the land of one village community;'She' refers to the earth god of one community altar.。」:「』。Every time the season comes for spring plowing, summer weeding, autumn harvest, or winter storing, each household prepares the three sacrificial animals and flowers and fruit, and comes here to make offerings to the earth god, so as to ensure peace and good fortune through the four seasons, an abundant harvest of the five grains, and flourishing livestock." Hearing this, Sanzang nodded in praise, saying, "Truly, as the saying goes, 'Three li from home, and already a different local custom.'。」 The households in my own homeland have no such virtuous customs." The old man then asked, "Master, where is your immortal homeland?" Sanzang said, "This poor monk is from the Great Tang of the Land of the East, and by imperial decree I am journeying to the Western Heaven to worship the Buddha and seek scriptures. ,Passing by your esteemed temple as the sky was growing dark, I have come especially to this sacred shrine to beg a night's lodging, and will set off again at daybreak." The old man was overjoyed, said "forgive my poor welcome" several times, and again called the boy to prepare a meal. When Sanzang had finished eating, he offered his thanks.

Xingzhe's eyes were sharp, and seeing a rope for hanging clothes under the eaves of the house, he walked over, tore it off in one pull, and used it to tether the horse's leg.:「?」:「The old man laughed and said, "Where was this horse stolen from?" Xingzhe said angrily, "You old fellow, you don't know how to mind your words.?」:「?」:「。 ──?──We are holy monks on our way to worship the Buddha — would we go about stealing horses?" The old man laughed and said, "If it wasn't stolen, why has it no saddle, bridle, or reins, and why did you come and tear off my clothesline?" Sanzang apologized, saying, "This mischievous one is simply hot-tempered. — If you wanted to tie up the horse, you should have properly asked the old gentleman for a rope — why go and tear off his clothesline? — Old sir, please don't take offense, don't take offense. As for this horse of mine, I won't hide it from you, it was not stolen.Yesterday, coming from the east, we reached the steep ravine of Eagle's Sorrow, and I originally had a white horse to ride, complete with saddle and bridle.Unexpectedly, there was a wicked dragon in that ravine who had become a spirit there, and it swallowed my horse, saddle, bridle and all, in one gulp.西Fortunately my disciple has some ability, and moreover we were blessed that Bodhisattva Guanyin came to the edge of the ravine and captured that dragon, making him transform into the very white horse I originally rode, identical in coat and markings, to carry me to the Western Heaven to worship the Buddha.。」:「Now, not even a day has passed since we crossed the ravine, and we have already arrived at your esteemed shrine, so we have not yet had the chance to obtain a saddle and bridle." The old man said, "Master, please don't take offense — this old man was only joking, who knew your worthy disciple would take it seriously.駿When I was young I too had a bit of village money, and I too enjoyed riding a fine steed. It's only that over the years I met with misfortune after misfortune, suffering bereavement and fire, until in the end I had nothing left, and so I came to serve here as the temple keeper, tending the incense.Fortunately, I get by day to day on alms collected from the patron households of the village behind.I actually still have a saddle and bridle at home, a thing I've always treasured — even in such poverty, I could never bear to sell it.Just now, hearing what you, venerable master, have said — the Bodhisattva herself went so far as to save and protect the divine dragon, having him transform into a horse to carry you — how then could this old man fail to offer even a little assistance?。」Tomorrow I will bring out that saddle and bridle, and I wish to give them to you, venerable master, to strap on the horse's back and continue on your way — please be so kind as to accept them." Hearing this, Sanzang thanked him again and again without end.Presently the boy brought out the evening vegetarian meal. When the meal was over, the lamps were lit, the beds made up, and each retired to rest.

:「。」:「。」The next morning, Xingzhe got up and said, "Master, that old temple keeper promised us a saddle and bridle last night — let's ask him for it, and not let him off." Before he had even finished speaking, the old man appeared, carrying indeed a saddle and bridle, saddle-pad, halter and reins, and all such things, everything needed for the horse complete without exception, and set them down under the veranda, saying, "Master, here is the saddle and bridle, offered to you." Seeing this, Sanzang gladly accepted them.He told Xingzhe to take them and put them on the horse's back to see whether they fit.Xingzhe stepped forward and picked up each piece one by one to examine it, and indeed they were fine things. There is a poem as proof. The poem says:

Xingzhe was secretly delighted, and put the saddle and bridle on the horse's back, and it fit just as if it had been made to measure.:「Sanzang bowed in thanks to the old man, who hastily helped him up, saying, "I am overwhelmed, I am overwhelmed.?」Why trouble yourself with thanks?" The old man did not press them to stay any longer, and asked Sanzang to mount the horse. The elder went out through the gate and, grasping the saddle, mounted the horse.Xingzhe carried the luggage on his pole. :「。」The old man then took a whip out from his sleeve, one with a fragrant rattan handle set with studded leather at every inch and a lash braided of tiger-sinew thread, and cupping his hands beside the road, offered it up, saying, "Holy monk, I also have this riding crop — let me give it to you as well." Sanzang, still on the horse, accepted it, saying, "Many thanks for your generosity, many thanks for your generosity."

Just as he was making his bow of thanks, the old man had already vanished. And when he looked back at the village shrine, it was nothing but a bare patch of open ground.:「Then he heard, from midair, a voice speaking: "Holy monk, forgive our poor hospitality.I am the Mountain God and Local Deity of Mount Luojia, sent by the Bodhisattva to deliver the saddle and bridle to you.西。」:「You should strive onward to the west, and not for a moment grow slack." This so startled Sanzang that he tumbled off the saddle and dismounted, bowing toward the sky, saying, "This disciple, with mortal eyes and a mortal body, failed to recognize your honored divine countenance — I beg you to forgive my offense.。」Please convey to the Bodhisattva my deep gratitude for her kind protection." Just watch him — he kept kowtowing toward the sky, over and over, more times than could be counted.:「?」:「?」:「Beside the road, the Great Sage Sun was fairly doubled over with laughter, and the Handsome Monkey King was tickled to no end; he stepped forward, pulled Tang Seng up, and said, "Master, get up now — he's already gone far away, he can't hear your prayers, he can't see your kowtowing, so what's the use of going on bowing?" The elder said, "Disciple, here I am kowtowing like this, and yet you don't so much as bow to him once, but just stand there off to the side, laughing away — what kind of reasoning is that?" Xingzhe said, "You have no idea — a fellow like him, hiding his head and showing his tail, ought by rights to get a beating;it's only for the Bodhisattva's sake that I've spared him a beating, and that's already more than enough for him — how would he dare accept a bow from old Sun?便。」:「Old Sun has been a bold fellow since childhood, and doesn't know how to bow to anyone — even meeting the Jade Emperor or Laozi the Most High, I would just give a nod and be done with it." Sanzang said, "Shameless creature, don't talk such empty nonsense.。」西Get up quickly, and don't delay our journey." Only then did Master rise, gather himself, and set off toward the west.

From here they traveled some two months along a peaceful road, encountering along the way only Luoluo and Huihui tribesfolk, and wolves, tigers, and leopards.Time passed swiftly, and once again it was the season of early spring. They saw mountains and forests in brocade shades of green, grass and trees sprouting fresh young shoots;the plum blossoms had all fallen, and the willow buds were just opening.西Master and disciples journeyed on, taking in the spring scenery, when once again they saw the sun sinking in the west.殿Sanzang reined in his horse and gazed into the distance: in a mountain hollow there were dim shadows of towers and terraces, halls and pavilions looming faint and deep.:「?」:「殿Sanzang said, "Wukong, look there — what kind of place is that?" Xingzhe raised his head, looked, and said, "If it's not a palace hall, it must certainly be a monastery. Let's hurry on and go beg lodging there." Sanzang happily agreed, gave the dragon horse free rein, and headed straight on.

In the end, what sort of place this journey led to is not yet known; listen to the explanation given in the next chapter.

What it’s about

At Eagle-Grief Stream the exiled dragon recruited by Guanyin swallows Tripitaka's horse. Wukong fights him in the water but cannot settle the matter, and calls Guanyin after local spirits identify the creature. She rebukes the dragon for failing to recognize the pilgrim and transforms him into the white horse that will carry Tripitaka west.

At a nearby farm the travellers receive hospitality and practical equipment. The horse's atonement will be sustained bodily service rather than a single declaration, while Wukong learns that the tightening spell can summon him back despite the speed of his cloud. The planned party must still learn to recognize and depend on itself.

When it was written 背景

The dragon-horse is the least vocal disciple, but his conversion turns punishment into everyday labour. Water combat, Guanyin's intervention and domestic lodging make three clear reading sections. Notice how saddle, luggage and clothing sit beside transformations: a miraculous journey remains materially dependent on animals, households and gear.
