Xuanzang Sets Out and Is Rescued from Tigers by a Hunter
第013回Chapter 13
A poem says:
The story tells that three days before the full moon of the ninth month in the thirteenth year of the Zhenguan era, Sanzang, escorted by the Tang emperor and many officials, was sent out beyond the passes of Chang'an. For a day or two the horses never paused, and they soon reached Famen Temple. The abbot of the temple, the elder of the upper chambers, led out more than five hundred monks, who lined up on both sides and received him within, greeting him and offering tea. When the tea was done they went in to the vegetarian meal, and after the meal, before they knew it, night had fallen. It was just as this:
Under the lamplight the monks discussed the fixed doctrines of the Buddhist gate and the reasons for going to the Western Heaven to fetch the scriptures: some said the waters were far and the mountains high, some said the road was full of tigers and leopards;有的說峻嶺陡崖難度,有的說毒魔惡怪難降。some said the steep ridges and sheer cliffs were hard to cross, some said the poisonous demons and evil spirits were hard to subdue. Sanzang held his tongue and said nothing, only pointing his hand at his own heart and nodding his head several times. The monks could not fathom his meaning, and pressed their palms together to ask: "When the Master points at his heart and nods, what does it mean?" Sanzang answered: "When the heart is born, all manner of demons are born;心滅,種種魔滅。when the heart is extinguished, all manner of demons are extinguished. I, your disciple, once vowed a great vow before the Buddha at Huasheng Temple, and I cannot help but exhaust my heart in this. On this journey I am resolved to reach the Western Heaven, to see the Buddha and seek the scriptures, so that our Wheel of the Law may turn again, and I pray that the sacred lord's imperial reign may stand firm forever." When the monks heard these words, every one of them admired him, every one of them spread the word, and all cried out together: "A loyal and true-hearted master who greatly proclaims the Law!" Their praise was endless, and they invited the Master to his bed to rest.
Before long the bamboo clappers sounded as the waning moon set, and the cocks crowed as the dawn clouds arose. The monks rose and prepared tea, water, and the morning meal. Xuanzang then put on his cassock, went up to the main hall, and bowed before the Buddha, saying: "Your disciple Chen Xuanzang is going to the Western Heaven to fetch the scriptures, but with my foolish mortal eyes I cannot recognize the true form of a living Buddha. Now I vow: on the road, whenever I meet a temple I will burn incense, whenever I meet a Buddha I will bow, and whenever I meet a pagoda I will sweep it. I only pray that our Buddha in his mercy will soon reveal his golden body sixteen feet tall, and bestow the true scriptures, to be handed down to the Eastern Land." When the prayer was done, he returned to the abbot's quarters for the meal. When the meal was over, the two attendants readied the saddle and horse and hastened the journey onward. Sanzang went out through the mountain gate and took leave of the monks. The monks, unable to bear the parting, escorted him a full ten li before turning back with tears in their eyes. Sanzang then pressed straight onward to the west. It was just the season of late autumn, and behold:
Master and disciples traveled for several days and reached the city of Gongzhou, where the officials of the entire prefecture had already come out to welcome them into the city. They rested one night, and the next morning left the city and went on. Along the road they ate when hungry and drank when thirsty, resting at night and traveling at dawn, and after two or three days they reached Hezhou Wei. This was the very border of the mountains and rivers of the Great Tang. The garrison commander guarding the border, together with the monks and Daoists of that place, hearing that this was the imperially commissioned Master, brother of the emperor, on his way west to see the Buddha, showed him nothing but reverence. They received him within and provided for him, and had the monastic officer invite him to rest at Fuyuan Temple. The monks of that temple came one by one to pay their respects, and prepared the evening meal. After the meal, he told the two attendants to feed the horses well, for they would set out before daybreak.
As soon as the cock crowed he summoned the attendants, which in turn roused the temple monks, who prepared tea and the morning meal. When the meal was over, they left the border behind. The elder's heart was in such a hurry that he had risen far too early. It was, in fact, deep autumn at that time, when the cocks crow early, and it was only about the fourth watch. The three travelers, with four mounts in all counting the horse, pressed on facing the clear frost and gazing at the bright moon; after going some tens of li, they came upon a mountain ridge and had no choice but to push through the grass to find a path — the roughness of the way was beyond telling, and they feared besides that they might lose their way. Just as they were caught in doubt and worry, they suddenly lost their footing, and all three, horse and all, tumbled into a pit. Sanzang's heart was thrown into panic, and the attendants' courage failed them. Just as they were struck with terror, they heard, from within, a roaring and shouting, crying out: "Seize them! Seize them!" A whirlwind came rolling in, and fifty or sixty demons and goblins swarmed out and dragged Sanzang and his attendants up. The Master, trembling with fear, stole a glance upward and saw the demon king seated there, looking utterly ferocious. Truly it was:
Sanzang was frightened out of his wits, his soul scattered, and the two attendants' bones went soft and their sinews numb. The demon king ordered them bound. All the demons together tied up the three of them with ropes. Just as preparations were being made to devour them, a commotion was heard outside, and someone came to report: "Lord Xiong of the Mountain and Scholar Te have arrived." Hearing this, Sanzang raised his head to look, and saw that the one walking in front was a black-skinned fellow. You ask what manner of figure he had:
And behind him came another, a fat fellow. You ask what manner of figure he had:
The two of them swaggered in, and the demon king, flustered, rushed out to welcome them. Lord Xiong of the Mountain said: "General Yin has been in fine spirits lately — a cause for congratulations, congratulations." Scholar Te said: "General Yin's bearing surpasses the usual — truly delightful, truly delightful." The demon king said: "How have you two gentlemen been these past days?" The Mountain Lord said: "Only keeping to plain habits." The Scholar said: "Only following the seasons." When the three had finished their greetings, they sat down together, talking and laughing.
Just then the attendants, bound tight, wept bitterly in pain. The black-skinned fellow said: "Where do these three come from?" The demon king said: "They delivered themselves right to my door." The Scholar said with a laugh: "Might they serve to entertain guests?" The demon king said: "By all means, by all means." The Mountain Lord said: "Best not use them all — eat two and keep one." The demon king agreed, and at once called his underlings to slit open the two attendants, cut out their hearts, and hack their bodies to pieces: the heads and hearts and livers were presented to the two guests, the four limbs he ate himself, and the remaining flesh and bones were shared out among the various demons. All that could be heard was a gulping and crunching, truly like a tiger devouring a lamb, and in an instant it was all consumed. It nearly frightened the elder to death. This was the very first ordeal since leaving Chang'an.
In the midst of this terror and confusion, the east gradually grew pale with light. The two demons did not disperse until daybreak, both saying: "Today we have troubled you greatly; another day we shall repay your kindness with all sincerity." Only then did they crowd out and take their leave.
Before long the red sun rose high, and Sanzang, dazed and befuddled, could not tell east from west or north from south. Just when his life seemed lost, he suddenly saw an old man come walking, leaning on a staff. The old man stepped forward and, with a wave of his hand, all the ropes snapped apart. He blew a breath in Sanzang's face, and Sanzang came to himself, kneeling on the ground and saying: "My thanks to you, venerable elder, for saving this poor monk's life." The old man returned the bow, saying: "Rise. Have you lost anything?" Sanzang said: "This poor monk's attendants have already been eaten by the demons. I only do not know where my baggage and horse are." The old man pointed with his staff, saying: "Is that not a horse and two bundles over there?" Sanzang turned to look, and indeed they were his own belongings, not lost at all, and his heart eased a little. He asked the old man: "Venerable elder, what place is this? And how do you come to be here?" The old man said: "This is Shuangcha Ridge, a den of tigers and wolves. Why did you fall in here?" Sanzang said: "This poor monk, at the cock's crow, left the border of Hezhou Wei, and not expecting to have risen so early, braving the frost and brushing through the dew, suddenly lost my way and fell here. I saw a demon king, ferocious and savage in the extreme, who bound this poor monk and my two attendants. Then I saw a black-skinned fellow, called Lord Xiong of the Mountain;一條胖漢,稱是特處士:走進來,稱那魔王是寅將軍。and a fat fellow, called Scholar Te: they came in, and called the demon king General Yin. The three of them ate my two attendants, and only at daybreak did they disperse. I could not imagine what great fortune and karma of mine brought you, venerable elder, to come here and save me." The old man said: "The Scholar is a wild-ox spirit;山君者,是個熊羆精;the Mountain Lord is a bear spirit;寅將軍者,是個老虎精。and General Yin is a tiger spirit. The demons all around are nothing but mountain sprites and tree goblins, monstrous beasts and gray wolves. It was only because your original nature is pure and bright that they could not eat you. Come with me, and I will guide you onto your road."
Sanzang, overwhelmed with gratitude, tied his bundles onto the horse, took hold of the reins, and followed the old man straight out of the pit and up onto the main road. He then tied the horse to a clump of grass by the roadside and turned to bow in thanks to the elder, whereupon the elder transformed into a gust of clear wind, mounted a red-crowned white crane, and soared off into the sky. He saw the wind flutter down a slip of paper, on which were written four lines of verse. The verse said:
When Sanzang had read it, he bowed to Heaven, saying: "My thanks to the Gold Star, for delivering me from this calamity." When the bow was done, he led his horse and, all alone and forlorn, pressed painfully onward. On that ridge, it was truly like this:
Sanzang, giving no thought to his own life, climbed up onto that steep ridge. He traveled half a day and still saw no trace of human dwelling or village. First, his stomach was hungry; second, the road was uneven. Just at this critical moment, he saw two fierce tigers roaring in front of him, and behind him several long snakes coiling. To his left were venomous insects, to his right monstrous beasts. Sanzang, alone and without any plan, could only surrender body and mind and let Heaven decide his fate. To make matters worse, the horse's legs went weak and its hooves buckled, and it sank down to its knees, lying prostrate on the ground — beat it and it would not rise, pull it and it would not move. The Master was in such distress that he had nowhere to turn, truly in ten thousand degrees of misery, and had already resigned himself to certain death, utterly helpless.
Now it is said that although he met with calamity, rescue was also at hand. Just when his life seemed lost, he suddenly saw the venomous insects scurry away, the monstrous beasts flee, the fierce tigers vanish, and the long snakes hide their tracks. Sanzang raised his head to look, and saw a man, holding a steel trident in his hand and wearing a bow and arrows at his waist, come round from before the mountain slope — truly a fine, stalwart fellow. Look at him:
Seeing him draw gradually nearer, Sanzang knelt by the roadside, pressed his palms together, and cried out loudly: "Great King, save my life! Great King, save my life!" The fellow came up close, set down his steel trident, and helped him up with his hand, saying: "Elder, do not be afraid. I am no evil man — I am a hunter of this mountain, surnamed Liu, given name Boqin, nicknamed the Guardian of the Mountain. I came out just now to look for a couple of mountain creatures to eat. I did not expect to meet you, and I hope I have not alarmed you too much." Sanzang said: "This poor monk is an imperial envoy under the Great Tang, a monk going to the Western Heaven to worship the Buddha and seek the scriptures. Just now, coming to this place, I met with wolves, tigers, snakes, and insects surrounding me on every side, and could go no further. Then suddenly you came, Taibao, and all the beasts fled, saving this poor monk's life — my thanks, my thanks." Boqin said: "I live here and make my living entirely by hunting wolves and tigers, catching snakes and insects to get by, and that is why the beasts fear me and ran off. Since you have come from the Tang court, you and I are from the same homeland. This place is still within the borders of the Great Tang, and I too am a subject of the Tang, and you and I both eat of the emperor's land and water — we are truly people of one nation. Do not be afraid; come with me, rest your horse at my cottage, and tomorrow morning I will send you on your way." Hearing this, Sanzang was filled with joy, thanked Boqin, and led his horse along after him.
After crossing the slope, they heard again a rushing sound of wind. Boqin said: "Elder, do not walk on — sit here a while. Where that wind sounds, a mountain cat is coming; let me catch it and take it home to treat you." Hearing this, Sanzang again trembled with fear and dared not take a step. The Taibao took up his steel trident, strode forward, and went to meet it. Just then a striped tiger came face to face with him; seeing Boqin, it wheeled around at once and fled. The Taibao gave a thunderous shout, crying: "Where does that wretched beast think it's going!" Seeing itself pursued so hotly, the tiger turned and swiped its claws, pouncing at him. The Taibao raised his three-pronged trident to meet the attack. Sanzang was so terrified that he collapsed limp onto the grass. Never since this monk left his mother's womb had he seen so perilous and violent a scene. The Taibao and the tiger, there below the mountain slope, man and beast locked together — truly it was a splendid fight.
The two of them fought for a full two hours, until the tiger's claws grew slow and its haunches slack, whereupon the Taibao thrust his trident level into its chest and struck it down. Pity it — the point of the steel trident pierced clean through its heart and liver, and in an instant blood flowed all over the ground. Then, dragging it by the ears, he hauled it up onto the road. The good fellow, his breath not even winded, his face not changed in color, said to Sanzang: "Good fortune, good fortune. This mountain cat will be enough for the elder to eat for a whole day." Sanzang praised him without end, saying: "Taibao is truly a mountain spirit!" Bo-qin said: "What skill is there in it, that it should trouble you with such over-praise? This is due to the elder's great good fortune. Come along, let's skin it quickly and cook up some meat to entertain you."
With one hand he held his fork, and with the other he dragged the tiger, leading the way in front. Sanzang led his horse and followed behind. They wound their way across a mountain slope, when suddenly they saw a mountain manor. Before its gate it truly was thus:
When Bo-qin reached the gateway, he flung down the dead tiger and called out: "Where are my lads?" Then out came three or four house servants, all of grotesque shape and fierce countenance, who came forward, dragging and hauling, and carried the tiger inside on a pole. Bo-qin ordered them to skin it quickly and prepare it to entertain the guest. He then turned back to welcome Sanzang inside; when they had greeted each other, Sanzang again bowed in thanks for Bo-qin's great kindness in taking pity on him and saving his life. Bo-qin said: "Among fellow countrymen, why trouble yourself with thanks?" When they had sat down and tea was finished, an old woman came in leading a young wife, to pay their respects to Sanzang. Bo-qin said: "This is my mother, and my young wife." Sanzang said: "Pray ask your honored mother to be seated above, that this poor monk may pay his respects." The old woman said: "You, elder, are a guest from afar; each of us should look to ourselves — there is no need to trouble with bows." Bo-qin said: "Mother, he is one sent by the Tang emperor's court, dispatched to the Western Heaven to see the Buddha and seek the scriptures. Just now I met him at the ridge-top, and thinking of him as a man from a whole country away, I invited him home to rest his horse; tomorrow I shall send him on his way." When the old woman heard this, she was overjoyed and said: "Good, good, good. Even had we invited him on purpose, it could not have fallen out so fittingly. Tomorrow is the anniversary of your father's death; you should just trouble the elder to perform some good deeds, recite a scroll of scripture, and see him off the day after." Now this Liu Bo-qin, though he was a tiger-slayer and a Guardian of the Mountain, nevertheless had a filial heart in him. On hearing his mother's words, he at once wished to prepare incense and paper, and to keep Sanzang there.
As they talked, before they knew it the sky was growing dark. The servants set out tables and benches, and brought several platters of well-stewed tiger meat, steaming hot, and set them on the table. Bo-qin asked Sanzang to make do with this for now, and said he would prepare another meal separately.三藏合掌當胸道:「善哉!Sanzang, palms joined before his chest, said: "Merciful Heaven! This poor monk will not deceive you, Taibao — from the moment I left my mother's womb I became a monk, and I have never once known how to eat meat." On hearing this, Bo-qin fell silent and pondered a good while, then said: "Elder, in this humble household, for generations past, we have never known how to eat vegetarian food. Even what bamboo shoots we gather, what wood-ears we pick, what dried greens we find, what bean curd we make — all of it is fried in the fat of roe deer, deer, tiger, or leopard; there is truly nowhere in the house that is free of meat. Both our cooking pots and stoves, too, are thoroughly soaked through with grease. What is to be done about this? It is rather I who have wronged you, elder, in inviting you." Sanzang said: "Taibao, do not trouble your mind over it further; pray eat and enjoy as you please. As for this poor monk, even if I go without food for three or five days, I can bear the hunger — only I dare not break my fast and precepts." Bo-qin said: "But what if you should starve to death — what then?" Sanzang said: "Thanks to the grace of Heaven through you, Taibao, who rescued me from the midst of the wolves and tigers — even should I starve to death, it would still be better than being food for a tiger."
When Bo-qin's mother heard this, she called out: "My son, do not go on chattering idly with the elder — I myself have some vegetarian food, with which he may be entertained." Bo-qin said: "And where would vegetarian food come from?" His mother said: "Never you mind about that — I have my own vegetarian things." She had the young wife take down the small cooking pot, set it over the fire to burn off the grease, scoured it again and again, washed it again and again, and then set it back upon the stove. First she boiled half a potful of plain water and set it aside for other use. Then she took some leaves of mountain sorrel and boiled them in water to make a kind of tea broth. After that she took some yellow millet and glutinous millet and cooked up a pot of rice. She also boiled some dried greens until done. She filled two bowls and brought them out, setting them upon the table. The old mother said to Sanzang: "Elder, please take your vegetarian meal. This is tea and rice that I myself, together with my daughter-in-law, prepared with our own hands, made as clean and pure as could be." Sanzang came down and gave thanks, and only then took his seat.
Bo-qin, meanwhile, set up another place apart, laying out unsalted, unseasoned tiger meat, musk-deer meat, python meat, fox meat, and rabbit meat, along with minced dried venison, bowls and plates piled full, to keep Sanzang company while he ate his vegetarian meal. He had only just sat down and was about to raise his chopsticks when he saw Sanzang, palms joined, reciting a sutra; this so startled Bo-qin that he dared not move his chopsticks, and hastily rose to stand off to one side. Sanzang had recited no more than a few lines when he then bade him go ahead and eat. Bo-qin said: "Are you a monk who recites only short scriptures?" Sanzang said: "This was not a sutra — it was a spell for the Uncovering of the Meal." Bo-qin said: "You people who have left the household life certainly have any number of fussy rules — even eating a meal calls for some chanting."
When the meal was finished, the bowls and plates were cleared away, and gradually the sky grew dark. Bo-qin led Sanzang out of the central house to take a walk out back. Passing through a covered walkway, they came to a thatched pavilion. They pushed open the door and went inside. There on the four walls hung several strong bows and hard crossbows, with a number of quivers of arrows stuck up;過梁上搭兩塊血腥的虎皮;across the crossbeam were slung two bloodstained tiger skins;牆根頭插著許多槍刀叉棒;along the foot of the wall were stuck many spears, swords, forks, and cudgels;正中間設兩張坐器。and in the very center were set two seats. Bo-qin invited Sanzang to sit a while. Seeing how fierce and forbidding, how sordid the place was, Sanzang dared not sit long, and so came out of the thatched pavilion. Going on further to the rear, they came to a great garden, where the eye could not take in all at once the clustered chrysanthemums heaped up in yellow, and tree after tree of maple and poplar hung with red. Then they heard a sudden whooshing sound, and out ran a dozen or so plump deer and a great herd of yellow roe deer, which, on seeing the men, only stared about foolishly and showed no fear at all. Sanzang said: "These roe deer and stags — I suppose Taibao raises them at home?" Bo-qin said: "It is like the people in your city of Chang'an — those with money amass treasure, those with manor lands store up grain. We who hunt for a living can only gather and raise wild beasts, to have them ready against a lean season." The two of them talked as they walked at their leisure, and before they knew it dusk had fallen, so they turned back to the front house to rest.
The next morning, the whole household, old and young, rose early and at once prepared a vegetarian meal to entertain the elder, and asked him to begin the recitation of scriptures. The elder washed his hands, and together with the Taibao went before the household shrine, where he burned incense and made obeisance to the household gods. Sanzang then struck up the wooden fish, first reciting the True Words for Purifying the Mouth-Karma, then the divine spell for purifying body and mind, and after that opened out a scroll of the Sutra for Deliverance of the Dead. When the recitation was finished, Bo-qin further asked him to write out a memorial for the deliverance of the deceased, and then to open and recite the Diamond Sutra and the Avalokitesvara Sutra. One by one he chanted them out in a clear, ringing voice. When this recitation was done, they took their midday vegetarian meal, and afterward he recited the Lotus Sutra and the Amitabha Sutra, each for several scrolls, and then recited a scroll of the Peacock Sutra, as well as told the story of the monk who washed away his karma — and before they knew it, evening had come again. They offered up all manner of incense and offerings, burned paper horses for the various spirits, and burned the memorial text for the deliverance of the dead. The Buddhist rites being now complete, each retired to rest.
Now it happened that the spirit of Bo-qin's deceased father, delivered by these rites and freed from his suffering in the underworld, had his ghost return that very night to the family home, where he appeared in a dream to the whole household, young and old, saying: "In the underworld I was suffering hardship I could not escape, and for a long time I could not be reborn. Now, fortunately, thanks to the holy monk who recited the scriptures, my sins and karma have been dissolved, and the King of the Underworld has sent someone to escort me up to the rich lands of China, to be reborn into a family of standing. You must be sure to thank and see off the elder properly — do not be remiss, do not be remiss. I go now." And truly it was thus: the myriad rites of Dharma, solemn and grand, have their purpose indeed — delivering the dead from suffering, freeing them from their sunken state. The whole household awoke from the dream just as the sun was already rising in the east. Bo-qin's wife said: "Taibao, last night I dreamed that Father-in-law came home, and said that in the underworld he suffered hardship he could not escape, and for a long time could not be reborn. Now, fortunately, thanks to the holy monk reciting the scriptures, his sins and karma have been dissolved, and the King of the Underworld has sent someone to escort him up to the rich lands of China, to be reborn into a family of standing, and he told us to thank that elder properly, and not to be remiss toward him. Having said this, he went straight out the door and wandered off at ease. We called to him and he did not answer; we tried to keep him and could not. When I awoke, it was but a dream." Bo-qin said: "I too had just such a dream, the very same as yours. 三藏道:「貧僧有何能處,敢勞致謝?」Let us go and tell Mother." Just as husband and wife were about to go and tell her, they heard the old mother calling: "Bo-qin, my son, come here — I have something to tell you." The two went before her, and the old mother, sitting up in bed, said: "My child, this night I had a joyful dream — I dreamed your father came home, and said that thanks to the elder's rites of deliverance, his sins and karma had already been dissolved, and he was going up to the rich lands of China, to be reborn into a family of standing." Husband and wife both burst out laughing and said: "My wife and I both had this very dream, and were just coming to report it, never expecting that Mother would call us for the very same dream." So the whole household, young and old, was roused, and preparations were made to express their gratitude; they got the horse ready for him, and all came before Sanzang to bow in thanks, saying: "We are endlessly grateful to you, elder, for delivering our departed father from suffering and granting him rebirth." Sanzang said: "What ability has this poor monk, that he should deserve such thanks?"
Bo-qin recounted to Sanzang in full the dream-words of the three of them, and Sanzang too was glad. They soon set out a vegetarian meal, and further prepared one tael of silver as a gift of thanks. Sanzang would not accept a single coin of it. The whole family pressed and entreated him most earnestly, but in the end Sanzang accepted not a single coin. He said only: "That you were willing to show such compassion and see me on my way a stretch is thanks enough to move me deeply." Bo-qin and his mother and wife, having no other choice, hurriedly made up some coarse wheat-flour baked cakes as dry provisions, and had Bo-qin escort him a good distance. Sanzang joyfully accepted these. The Taibao, having received his mother's instructions, further called two or three house servants, each bringing hunting gear, and together they set out upon the great road. They could not take in all the wild scenery of the mountains, the fine views along the ridges.

On hearing this, Sanzang slid down off his saddle and said: "I beg you most earnestly, Taibao, to trouble yourself to see me a little further still." Bo-qin said: "Elder, you do not know. This mountain is called Liangjie Shan, the Mountain of Two Realms — its eastern half belongs to the domain of our great Tang, while its western half is the territory of the Tartars. The wolves and tigers over there do not submit to my authority, and I myself may not cross the boundary — you must go on by yourself." Sanzang's heart was struck with fear; he flung out his hand, clutching at Bo-qin's sleeve and garment, and could hardly hold back his falling tears. Just as they were in the midst of these parting words of caution and farewell bows, they suddenly heard, at the foot of the mountain, a shout like rolling thunder: "My master has come! My master has come!" This so startled Sanzang that he stood there dumbfounded, while Bo-qin struggled to master himself.

What it’s about
Tripitaka and two attendants stray into a demon lair, where the Tiger General, Bear Mountain Lord and Buffalo Chief butcher and eat the attendants. Venus rescues the monk at dawn, but he must continue alone through beasts and steep country. The hunter Liu Boqin kills a tiger, shelters him and asks him to recite sutras for his dead father.
Liu's father appears in a dream to confirm that the recitation freed him for rebirth. Liu escorts Tripitaka to the Tang frontier but cannot cross it. From beneath Five Elements Mountain a voice calls to the traveller: Wukong has waited five hundred years for the master who can release him.
When it was written 背景
The first road chapter destroys the security of imperial departure immediately, establishing Tripitaka's physical helplessness and the novel's uneasy proximity of comic monsters and bodily horror. Liu's household shows what the monk can contribute before he has magical protectors. Border, mountain and hunting words dominate; the final voice reunites two long-separated plots.
