The Birth of the Stone Monkey

001Chapter 1

A poem says:

It is said that in the reckoning of Heaven and Earth, 129,600 years make one Epoch (yuan).Dividing one Epoch into twelve Cycles (hui), these are the twelve Earthly Branches: Zi, Chou, Yin, Mao, Chen, Si, Wu, Wei, Shen, You, Xu, and Hai.Each Cycle comprises 10,800 years.Speaking in terms of a single day: at the hour of Zi the yang energy is born, and at the hour of Chou the cock crows;at Yin light has not yet penetrated, and at Mao the sun rises;at Chen comes the time after breakfast, and at Si things fall into order;西at Wu the sun stands at noon in the middle of the sky, and at Wei it begins to slant westward;at Shen comes the late-afternoon meal, the sun sets at You, dusk falls at Xu, and at Hai people settle to rest.By analogy with the great reckoning, when the Cycle of Xu comes to its end, Heaven and Earth grow dark and dim, and the myriad things fall into obscurity. After another 5,400 years, when the Cycle of Hai begins, all is utter darkness, and neither people nor things exist between Heaven and Earth — hence it is called Chaos (hundun). After another 5,400 years, as the Cycle of Hai draws to its close, at the turn from ending to new beginning, drawing near the Cycle of Zi, light gradually begins to open again.:「Shao Kangjie said: 'At the winter solstice, in the middle of the hour of Zi, the heart of Heaven has not yet shifted.'。」'At the place where the first yang first stirs, is the time when the myriad things have not yet been born.' At this point, Heaven begins to have its root. After another 5,400 years, exactly at the Cycle of Zi, the light and pure rises upward, and there come to be the sun, the moon, the stars, and the constellations.Sun, moon, stars, and constellations are called the Four Images.Hence it is said, Heaven opened at Zi.。《:「After another 5,400 years pass, as the Cycle of Zi draws to its close, drawing near the Cycle of Chou, things gradually become firm and solid. The Book of Changes says: 'Great indeed is the Origin of Qian!''Perfect indeed is the Origin of Kun!'。」'The myriad things rely on it for their birth, obediently following Heaven.' At this point, Earth begins to congeal. After another 5,400 years, exactly at the Cycle of Chou, the heavy and turbid congeals downward, and there come to be water, fire, mountains, stone, and earth.Water, fire, mountain, stone, and earth are called the Five Forms.Hence it is said, Earth was established at Chou. After another 5,400 years pass, as the Cycle of Chou ends and the Cycle of Yin begins, the myriad things come into being.:「The calendar treatise says: 'The vapor of Heaven descends, the vapor of Earth rises;'。」'Heaven and Earth join together, and all things are born.' At this point, Heaven is clear and Earth is bright, and yin and yang unite. After another 5,400 years, exactly at the Cycle of Yin, people are born, beasts are born, birds are born — this is what is meant by Heaven, Earth, and Man, the Three Powers, taking their fixed places.Hence it is said, mankind was born at Yin.

Thanks to Pangu's opening of the world, the Three Sovereigns' governing of the age, and the Five Emperors' fixing of moral order, the world came to be divided into Four Great Continents: the Continent of Dongshengshen, the Continent of Xiniuhe, the Continent of Nanshanbu, and the Continent of Beijulu. This book speaks solely of the Continent of Dongshengshen.Beyond the sea there was a kingdom named Aolai Guo.The kingdom lay close to the great sea, and in the sea there was a famous mountain called Huaguo Shan (Flower-Fruit Mountain). This mountain was the ancestral vein of the Ten Continents, the dragon-vein from which the Three Isles descended, formed at the very moment the clear and turbid first separated, taking shape once the primordial chaos was divided.Truly a fine mountain! There is a rhapsody to bear witness. The rhapsody says:

Right at the very summit of that mountain there was an immortal stone. This stone was three zhang, six chi, and five cun in height, and two zhang four chi around. Its height of three zhang, six chi, five cun corresponded to the 365 degrees of the full circuit of Heaven;its girth of two zhang four chi corresponded to the twenty-four solar terms of the calendar. On it were nine openings and eight holes, corresponding to the Nine Palaces and the Eight Trigrams. On all four sides there were no trees to give it shade, but to left and right there were angelica and orchids set off against it.Ever since the creation of the world, it had constantly absorbed the true essence of Heaven and the fine spirit of Earth, the quintessence of the sun and the radiance of the moon, and having been so quickened for so long, it came to have the germ of magical understanding.Within it an immortal embryo was nurtured, and one day it split open and produced a stone egg, about the size of a round ball.On being touched by the wind, it transformed into a stone monkey, complete with all five senses and all four limbs.便It at once learned to crawl and to walk, and bowed to the four quarters. From its eyes shot two beams of golden light that flashed straight up to the Palace of the Dipper.殿This startled the Great Compassionate and Merciful Sage on High, the Jade Emperor, the Great Heavenly Worthy, the Mysterious Sovereign of the Highest Firmament, who, seated on his throne in the Hall of Miraculous Mist within the Golden Tower Cloud Palace, gathering his immortal officials about him and seeing the blazing golden light, at once ordered Thousand-Mile Eye and Fair-Wind Ear to open the Southern Gate of Heaven and look out.The two generals, obeying the decree, went out through the gate and looked and listened clearly and distinctly.:「In a moment they returned to report: 'Obeying the decree, your servants went to observe and listen at the place of the golden light — it is within the borders of the small kingdom of Aolai, east across the sea in the Continent of Dongshengshen. There is a mountain called Huaguo Shan, and on the mountain an immortal stone which produced an egg; on being touched by the wind it turned into a stone monkey, which was bowing to the four quarters there, its eyes shooting golden light straight up to the Palace of the Dipper.'。」:「。」'Now that it has begun to take food and drink, the golden light is about to fade and subside.' The Jade Emperor, graciously bestowing his benevolence, said: 'Creatures of the lower world, born of the essence of Heaven and Earth, are not worth regarding as strange.'

That monkey, in the mountains, could walk and leap about; it ate grasses and trees, drank from mountain streams, gathered mountain flowers, and sought out tree fruits;鹿it kept company with wolves, made a company of tigers and leopards, made friends of river deer and stags, and grew close with macaques and gibbons;宿at night it lodged beneath stone cliffs, and by day it roamed among the peaks and caves.:「。」Truly it was: 'In the mountains there is no calendar; when the cold ends, one does not know the year.'

One day, when the weather was hot, it went with the other monkeys to escape the heat, all playing beneath the shade of the pines.Just look at them, each and every one:

After the band of monkeys had played for a while, they went off to bathe in the mountain stream. They saw that stream of water rushing along, truly like a melon rolling and splashing in its surge.:「。」:「As the old saying goes: 'Birds have the speech of birds, beasts have the language of beasts.' All the monkeys said: 'We don't know where this stream of water comes from.'!」'Today, having leisure and nothing else to do, let's follow the stream up to its head and seek out its source — let's go and have some fun!' With a shout, they all dragged along their sons and daughters, called out to brothers young and old, and ran together, following the stream and climbing the mountain, straight to the place of its source, which turned out to be a flying waterfall. And there they saw:

:「All the monkeys clapped their hands and cried out in praise: 'Fine water, fine water!'。」:「。」:「。」'So it turns out that this place connects far off with the foot of the mountain, and joins directly with the waves of the great sea.' They also said: 'Whoever has the ability to plunge in, find the source, and come back out without harming his body, we will bow to him as king.' They called out three times in succession, when suddenly, from amid the thicket, a stone monkey leapt out and answered with a loud cry: 'I'll go in, I'll go in!' What a splendid monkey! It was truly he of whom it is said:

Watch him close his eyes, crouch down, and with a spring of his body leap straight into the waterfall's spring. Suddenly opening his eyes and raising his head to look, he found there was no water and no waves inside at all, but a bridge, clear and bright. He steadied his body, settled his spirit, and looked carefully again — it turned out to be a bridge of iron slabs. The water beneath the bridge rushed through the openings in the rock and poured out hanging upside down, screening off the bridge's gateway. He then raised himself up onto the head of the bridge, and walking further to look again, found it seemed just like a place where people might dwell — truly a fine spot. And there he saw:

After looking for a long while, he leapt over to the middle of the bridge and looked about to left and right.」。He saw right in the middle a stone tablet, on which was carved in a line of large regular-script characters: 'Blessed Land of Huaguo Shan, Heavenly Grotto of the Water-Curtain Cave.'

便:「The stone monkey was overjoyed beyond measure, and hastily turned to head back out; closing his eyes and crouching down again, he leapt back out through the water, and laughed aloud twice, saying: 'What tremendous fortune!'!」:「'What tremendous fortune!' The other monkeys crowded around him and asked: 'What is it like inside?'?」:「'How deep is the water?' The stone monkey said: 'There's no water!''No water!'。」:「?」:「'It turns out to be a bridge of iron slabs, and on the far side of the bridge is a dwelling made by the design of Heaven and Earth themselves.' The other monkeys said: 'How can you tell it's a dwelling?' The stone monkey said, laughing: 'This stream of water rushes through beneath the bridge and pours down hanging upside down to screen off the doorway.''Beside the bridge there are flowers and there are trees, and there is a stone house.''Within the house there are stone nooks, a stone stove, stone bowls, stone basins, a stone bed, and stone stools.'』。'In the middle, on a stone tablet, is carved: "Blessed Land of Huaguo Shan, Heavenly Grotto of the Water-Curtain Cave."''It is truly a place where we could settle ourselves.''And inside it is spacious enough, too, to hold hundreds and thousands of young and old.''Let us all go in and live there, and spare ourselves the suffering of Heaven's weather.'In there:

When the monkeys heard this, every one of them was delighted.:「。」:「。」They all said: 'You go first and lead us in, in!' The stone monkey again closed his eyes, crouched down, and leapt inside, calling out: 'All of you follow me in, in!' Those monkeys who were bold all leapt in;those who were timid stretched out their necks and drew them back again, scratched their ears and cheeks, cried out loudly, dawdled about for a while, and then in the end all went in too.Leaping over the bridgehead, they snatched at basins and grabbed at bowls one after another, claimed the stove and fought over the bed, moving things this way and that — for such is the mischievous nature of monkeys, never quiet for a moment — and only stopped once they had moved things about until their strength was spent and their spirits worn out.:「,『。』The stone monkey, sitting upright above them all, said: 'Gentlemen, "a man without good faith, one does not know what he is fit for." You just now said that whoever had the ability to get in and out without harming his body would be bowed to as king.'?」」。'I have now come in and gone out, gone out and come back in again, and found this heavenly grotto for all of you to sleep soundly and safely in, each enjoying the blessing of a settled home — so why not bow to me as king?' On hearing this, the monkeys all bowed low without objection, and one by one, arranged in order of age, they bowed and paid homage facing him, all hailing him as 'Great King of a Thousand Years.'」。From then on, the stone monkey ascended loftily to the throne, and, dropping the word 'stone' from his name, called himself the 'Handsome Monkey King.'There is a poem to bear witness. The poem says:

The Handsome Monkey King led the band of gibbons, macaques, and long-tailed monkeys, and assigned them ranks of ruler, minister, aide, and attendant.宿By day they roamed Huaguo Shan, by night they lodged in the Water-Curtain Cave, of one mind and one feeling, joining neither the flocks of flying birds nor the herds of running beasts, and he alone was king, delighting in boundless joy. Thus it was:

The Handsome Monkey King enjoyed his natural pleasures, and who would have expected it to last three or five hundred years. One day, in the midst of a joyful feast with the other monkeys, he suddenly grew troubled and sorrowful, and tears fell from his eyes.:「?」:「。」:「The monkeys hastily crowded round and bowed, saying: 'Great King, why are you troubled?' The Monkey King said: 'Though I am at a moment of joy, I have a small worry about the distant future, and that is why I am troubled.' The monkeys laughed again and said: 'The Great King is far too discontented.'?」:「?」'We gather daily in joy, on this blessed immortal mountain, in this ancient grotto of a divine continent; we are not subject to the rule of the qilin, nor governed by the phoenix, nor bound by any earthly throne — free and unfettered, this is boundless good fortune, so why worry over some distant concern?' The Monkey King said: 'Though today I am not subject to the laws of any human king, and fear no beast's authority, in time to come, when I grow old and my strength fails, old man Yama will secretly be in charge of me, and once I die, will I not have lived my life in this world for nothing, unable to remain long among the ranks of Heaven's people?' On hearing these words, the monkeys all covered their faces and wept in sorrow, every one troubled by the thought of impermanence.

:「Just then, from among the ranks, a gibbon of the long-armed kind suddenly leapt out and cried loudly: 'If the Great King has such distant concerns, this is truly what is called the awakening of the heart set on the Way.'。」:「?」:「。」:「?」:「。」 Now, among all the Five Kinds of Creatures, there are only three sorts of beings not subject to the rule of old man Yama.' The Monkey King said: 'Do you know these three sorts of beings?' The gibbon said: 'They are the Buddhas, the Immortals, and the Divine Sages — these three escape the cycle of rebirth, are neither born nor destroyed, and share the same lifespan as Heaven and Earth and the mountains and rivers.' The Monkey King said: 'Where do these three dwell?' The gibbon said: 'They dwell only within this Jambudvipa world, within ancient grottoes and immortal mountains.' On hearing this, the Monkey King was filled with joy and said: 'Tomorrow I shall take leave of you all and go down the mountain, to roam like a cloud to the corners of the sea and travel far to the edge of Heaven, and I must seek out these three kinds of beings, to learn how never to grow old and live forever, and always escape the calamity of King Yama.' Alas!使These very words at once caused him to leap free of the net of rebirth, and brought about the making of the Great Sage Equal to Heaven.:「The monkeys all clapped their hands in praise, saying: 'Excellent, excellent!'。」'Tomorrow we shall cross the ridges and climb the mountains, search widely for fruits, and lay out a great banquet to see the Great King off.'

The next day, the monkeys duly went off to gather immortal peaches, pick rare fruits, dig up mountain yams, and cut wild ginseng.Angelica, orchids, fragrant melilotus, jade-like grasses, and rare flowers — every single item, all set out neat and orderly — they arranged stone stools and stone tables, and laid out immortal wine and immortal delicacies. And there was to be seen:

The monkeys honored the Handsome Monkey King with the seat of honor, while each of the rest arranged themselves below in order of age, and one by one they came forward in turn to offer wine, offer flowers, and offer fruit, drinking heartily the whole day long.

The next day, the Handsome Monkey King rose early and instructed them: 'Little ones, break off some dead pine branches for me and weave them into a raft, take a bamboo pole for a punting-pole, and pack up some fruits and the like — I am about to set off.' He then boarded the raft alone, punted with all his strength, and drifting and rocking, headed straight out into the waves of the great sea, riding the heavenly winds to cross over into the territory of the Southern Continent of Nanshanbu. This departure was truly as the verse says:

It was also that his fortune had arrived and his time had come: from the moment he boarded the wooden raft, day after day a brisk southeast wind blew, carrying him to the shore in the northwest, which was the territory of the Continent of Nanshanbu.Holding his pole to test the water's depth, he happened upon shallow water, abandoned the raft, and leapt up onto the shore. There by the seashore he saw people catching fish, shooting geese, digging clams, and boiling salt.He walked up close, played a trick, and put on the guise of a fierce tiger, frightening those people so badly that they threw down their baskets and nets and scattered running in all directions.穿He caught one who could not run fast enough, stripped off his clothes, and put them on himself in imitation of a person.穿Swaggering along, he passed through prefectures and counties, and in the marketplaces he learned human manners and learned human speech.宿Eating by day and lodging by night, with a single-minded heart he sought after the Way of the Buddhas, the Immortals, and the Divine Sages, searching for a method of eternal life without aging. He saw that the people of the world were all men in pursuit of fame and profit, and not a single one of them was concerned with life and destiny itself.Truly it was thus:

The Monkey King sought out immortals and the Way, but had no fated encounter. In Nanshanbuzhou, he passed through long walls and wandered through small towns, and before he knew it, eight or nine years had gone by.西Suddenly he came to the great Western Ocean, and thought that beyond the sea there surely must be immortals.西西Alone, just as before, he built a raft, and drifted once more across the Western Sea, straight to the borders of Xiniuhezhou. He went ashore and searched everywhere for a long while, when suddenly he saw a tall mountain, beautiful and elegant, its forested foothills deep and secluded. He feared neither wolves nor snakes, nor was he afraid of tigers and leopards, and climbed to the mountaintop to look around.Truly it was a fine mountain:

Just as he was looking, he suddenly heard, deep in the forest, the sound of someone speaking.穿He hurried forward, pushed into the forest, and listened closely — it turned out to be the sound of singing. The song went:

滿:「!」Hearing these words, the Handsome Monkey King was filled with joy and said, 'So the immortal is hidden here after all!' He hastily leapt inside, and looking closely again, saw that it was a woodcutter, raising his axe to chop firewood there.Just look at his unusual attire:

:「。」:「The Monkey King went up close and called out, 'Old Immortal, your disciple offers greetings.' The woodcutter hastily dropped his axe, turned, and returned the greeting, saying, 'I do not deserve this, I do not deserve this.?」:「?」:「?」:「:『》。』《?」:「滿》,I am a clumsy fellow, without even enough food and clothing — how could I dare bear the name "immortal"?' The Monkey King said, 'If you are not an immortal, how is it you speak immortal words?' The woodcutter said, 'What immortal words did I speak?' The Monkey King said, 'Just now as I came to the edge of the forest, I heard you say: "Wherever we meet, be it immortal or sage, sitting quietly to expound the Huangting." The Huangting is a true scripture of the Tao and its Virtue — if that is not immortal talk, what is?' The woodcutter laughed and said, 'To tell you the truth, this lyric is called "Man Ting Fang," and it was taught to me by an immortal. That immortal lives next door to my humble home, and seeing how toilsome my household affairs are and how I am vexed day after day, he taught me that whenever I meet with vexation, I should recite this lyric — firstly to ease my mind, and secondly to relieve my troubles.。」:「I was just now brooding over some hardship, and so I was reciting it, never expecting you would hear it.' The Monkey King said, 'Since your home neighbors an immortal, why not follow him in cultivation??」:「To learn a method of never growing old — would that not be good?' The woodcutter said, 'My whole life has been bitter: from childhood I was raised by my parents, and only at eight or nine years of age did I begin to understand the ways of the world, when unfortunately my father passed away, leaving my mother a widow.I have no brothers or sisters, only myself, and there being no help for it, I attend upon her morning and night. Now that my mother is old, all the more I dare not abandon her.And besides, our fields have gone to waste, and we lack food and clothing, so I can only chop a couple of bundles of firewood, carry them to the marketplace, sell them for a few coppers, buy a few pints of rice, cook it myself, and prepare tea and meals to support my aged mother.。」That is why I cannot pursue cultivation.'

:「The Monkey King said, 'From what you have told me, you are a gentleman who practices filial piety, and in time good things will surely come to you.。」:「I only hope you will point out to me where that immortal dwells, so that I may go and pay my respects.' The woodcutter said, 'Not far, not far. This mountain is called Lingtai Fangcun Shan; on the mountain there is a cave called Xieyue Sanxingdong, and in that cave there is an immortal named Patriarch Xuputi. The disciples that Patriarch has sent forth are beyond counting, and even now there are still thirty or forty people cultivating under him.。」 :「Follow that little path, go south for about seven or eight li, and that is his home.' The Monkey King grabbed the woodcutter by the hand and said, 'Old brother, just come along with me — if I gain any benefit from this, I will never forget the favor of your guidance.' The woodcutter said, 'What an inflexible fellow you are! I have just explained it to you this way, and still you do not understand? If I were to go with you, would that not ruin my livelihood?Who would then care for my old mother?。」I must go chop firewood — you go on by yourself, by yourself.'

Hearing this, the Monkey King had no choice but to take his leave. He left the deep forest, found the path, crossed a mountain slope, and after about seven or eight li, sure enough he caught sight of a cave dwelling. He stood up straight to look, and truly it was a fine place!Behold:

He also saw that the cave gate was tightly shut, quiet and still, with no trace of anyone about.」。Suddenly turning his head, he saw at the cliff's edge a stone tablet standing, about three zhang and more in height and eight chi and more in width, on which was a single line of ten large characters: 'Lingtai Fangcun Shan, Xieyue Sanxingdong.':「。」The Handsome Monkey King was overjoyed and said, 'The people here are truly honest — there really is this mountain and this cave.' After looking his fill for a good while, he dared not knock at the gate.Instead he went and leapt up onto the tips of the pine branches, plucking pine nuts to eat and playing about.

After a little while, he heard a creaking sound, and as the cave gate opened, out walked an immortal youth — truly of fine bearing and heroic appearance, with an extraordinary countenance, quite unlike an ordinary mortal.Behold him:

:「?」:「。」:「?」:「。」:「The lad came out of the gate and called loudly, 'Who is it disturbing the peace here?' The Monkey King leapt down from the tree with a thud, stepped forward, and bowing said, 'Immortal lad, I am a disciple seeking the Way and studying to become an immortal — I would not dare disturb the peace here.' The immortal lad laughed and said, 'Are you one seeking the Way?' The Monkey King said, 'I am.' The lad said, 'My master has just now risen from his couch and mounted the platform to expound the Way, and before he had even given the reason, he told me to come out and open the gate.:『。』?」:「。」:「。」He said: "Someone come to cultivate the Way has arrived outside; go and receive him." This must be you, I suppose?' The Monkey King laughed and said, 'It is I, it is I.' The lad said, 'Follow me in.'

The Monkey King straightened his clothes and composed himself gravely, and followed the lad straight into the depths of the grotto-heaven to look about: tier upon tier of deep pavilions and jade towers, court after court of pearl palaces and shell gate-towers — words could not exhaust the description of those quiet chambers and secluded dwellings.Right up to beneath the Jade Terrace, he saw Patriarch Xuputi sitting upright upon the platform, with thirty young immortals standing in attendance on either side below the terrace.Truly it was:

:「。」:「As soon as the Handsome Monkey King saw him, he threw himself down in obeisance, kowtowing countless times, saying over and over, 'Master, Master, your disciple pays homage with utmost sincerity, with utmost sincerity.' The Patriarch said, 'Where are you from?。」:「。」:「First state your native place, name, and surname clearly, and then bow again.' The Monkey King said, 'Your disciple is from Shuiliandong on Huaguoshan, in Aolai Guo, in Dongshengshenzhou.' The Patriarch shouted an order: 'Drive him out!!」:「。」:「He is nothing but a fraud and a liar — how could such a one cultivate the fruits of the Way!' The Monkey King hastily kowtowed without stopping and said, 'Your disciple speaks honestly, with absolutely no falsehood.' The Patriarch said, 'If you are honest, how is it you speak of Dongshengshenzhou??」:「。」That place is separated from here by two great seas and Nanshanbuzhou — how could you possibly have arrived here?' The Monkey King kowtowed and said, 'Your disciple drifted over oceans and crossed seas, ascending borders and wandering about, for more than ten years, before at last finding my way to this place.'

:「The Patriarch said, 'Well then, since you came gradually, step by step, that will do.?」:「What is your surname?' The Monkey King replied again, 'I have no temper. If people curse me, I do not get angry;if they beat me, I do not get furious.I simply offer an apology and let it go.。」:「All my life I have had no temper.' The Patriarch said, 'I do not mean that kind of "temper" (xing).?」:「。」:「?」:「What was your father's and mother's surname?' The Monkey King said, 'I have no father or mother either.' The Patriarch said, 'If you have no parents, then perhaps you were born from a tree?' The Monkey King said, 'Though I was not born from a tree, I did grow out of a stone.便。」:「I only remember that on Huaguoshan there was an immortal stone, and in a certain year the stone split open, and I was born.' Hearing this, the Patriarch was secretly delighted, and said, 'If that is so, then you are one formed by Heaven and Earth.。」Get up and walk about for me to see.' The Monkey King sprang up and, hobbling this way and that, walked back and forth twice.:「The Patriarch laughed and said, 'Though your body is coarse and unsightly, you look just like a macaque that feeds on pine nuts.』。I shall take a surname from your very form, and mean to have you surnamed "Hu" (猢, macaque).Remove the animal radical from the character "hu," and what remains is "gu" and "yue" (古月, old moon).'Gu' (old) means aged;'yue' (moon) means yin. What is aged and yin cannot generate or nurture life — better to have you surnamed "sun" (猻) instead.Remove the animal radical from the character "sun," and what remains is "zi" and "xi" (子系, child and lineage).'Zi' means a male child;as for 'xi' —it means an infant, small and delicate, which accords precisely with the original idea of an infant.。」滿:「I shall have you surnamed "Sun" (孫) then.' Hearing this, the Monkey King was filled with joy, and kowtowing toward him said, 'Good!Good!Good!Only today have I come to know my surname.。」:「。」:「?」:「I earnestly beg my master's compassion — now that I have a surname, please grant me also a given name, so that I may properly be called by it.' The Patriarch said, 'In my sect there are twelve characters used in turn to assign names, and you happen to be a young disciple of the tenth generation.' The Monkey King said, 'What are those twelve characters?' The Patriarch said, 'They are: Guang, Da, Zhi, Hui, Zhen, Ru, Xing, Hai, Ying, Wu, Yuan, Jue.Counting down to you, it falls exactly on the character 'Wu.'』,?」:「I shall give you a Dharma name, calling you "Sun Wukong" — will that do?' The Monkey King laughed and said, 'Good!Good!Good!。」From now on I shall be called Sun Wukong.' Truly it was:

In the end, we do not know what fruits of the Way he would cultivate hereafter; listen to the next chapter for the explanation.

What it’s about

A stone egg on Flower-Fruit Mountain bursts open as a stone monkey. He wins kingship by leaping through a waterfall and finding Water-Curtain Cave, but the death of an old monkey spoils his contentment. He crosses the sea seeking freedom from mortality, and Patriarch Subodhi accepts him as a disciple and names him Sun Wukong.

The opening makes courage, curiosity and the desire for recognition inseparable. Wukong can create a flourishing community, yet he cannot enjoy it once he understands death. His passage through water, cave and ocean turns a folktale animal king into a spiritual seeker before the pilgrimage has even been imagined.

When it was written 背景

This origin chapter establishes the novel's mythic geography and its easy traffic among popular, Daoist and Buddhist traditions. Its repeated crossings provide clear landmarks through passages of verse and scenic description. A learner can follow the waterfall wager and the sea voyage first, then return to the formal names and poems.
