Monkey Learns the Secret of Immortality and the Seventy-Two Transformations

002Chapter 2

The tale tells that once the Handsome Monkey King had received his surname and name, he was overjoyed and leapt with delight, and bowed before Patriarch Puti to offer his thanks.退The Patriarch then ordered the assembled disciples to lead Sun Wukong out beyond the second gate, to teach him the proper forms of sweeping and cleaning, of responding to others, and of advancing, withdrawing, and comporting himself in company. The assembled immortals obeyed and went out with him.Once outside the gate, Wukong bowed again to all his fellow senior disciples, and then arranged a place to sleep among the corridors and side halls. The next morning, he began learning proper speech and manners together with his fellow disciples, discussing the scriptures and expounding the Way, practicing calligraphy, and burning incense. So it was, day after day.漿In his spare time he swept the grounds and hoed the garden, tended flowers and pruned trees, gathered firewood and tended the fire, and carried water and hauled provisions.Of all the things needed for daily use, there was not one he failed to provide.Living in the cave, before he knew it, six or seven years had swiftly passed.

One day, the Patriarch mounted the platform and sat in the high seat, calling together all the immortals to begin expounding the Great Way.Truly it was:

Sun Wukong, listening at the side, was so delighted that he scratched his ears and cheeks, his brows blossomed and his eyes smiled, and he could not help but dance with his hands and stamp with his feet.:「?」:「Suddenly the Patriarch caught sight of him and called out to Sun Wukong, "Standing there among the ranks, why are you capering and dancing like a madman instead of listening to my lecture?" Wukong said, "Your disciple was listening with all sincerity, and when I came to the wondrous passages of the old Master's teaching, I was so overjoyed that I could not help myself, and without noticing it fell into this posture of leaping about.。」:「?」:「I beg the Master to forgive my offense." The Patriarch said, "Since you recognize the wondrous sounds, let me ask you this — how long have you been here in the cave?" Wukong said, "Your disciple has always been rather muddled, and does not know how much time has passed.。」:「I only remember that when there was no fire under the stove, I would often go gather firewood behind the mountain, and there I saw a fine peach tree on a hill, where I have eaten my fill of peaches seven times." The Patriarch said, "That hill is called Rotten Peach Hill.Since you have eaten there seven times, it must be seven years.?」:「便。」Now, what sort of Way do you wish to learn from me?" Wukong said, "Whatever the honored Master chooses to teach, so long as it carries a whiff of the Way, your disciple will learn it."

:「『The Patriarch said, "Within the gate of the word 'Dao' there are three hundred sixty side-branches, and every side-branch leads to a true fruition.?」:「。」:「?」:「?」:「。」:「?」:「。」:「。」I wonder which branch you wish to study?" Wukong said, "Whatever the honored Master thinks best, your disciple will follow with all his heart." The Patriarch said, "What if I taught you the Way of the gate of 'Magic'?" Wukong said, "What does the Way of the Magic gate consist of?" The Patriarch said, "In the gate of Magic are such things as invoking immortals, planchette writing, divination by lots, and casting yarrow stalks, by which one may know the principles of pursuing good fortune and avoiding calamity." Wukong said, "Can one attain long life by such means?" The Patriarch said, "No, no." Wukong said, "Then I won't learn it, I won't learn it."

:「?」:「?」:「。」:「?」:「。」:「The Patriarch said again, "What if I taught you the Way of the gate of 'Schools'?" Wukong asked again, "What principles does the gate of Schools contain?" The Patriarch said, "The gate of Schools contains the Confucians, the Buddhists, the Daoists, the Yin-Yang school, the Mohists, and the school of medicine — some read the scriptures, some chant the Buddha's name, along with such things as paying court to the Perfected and invoking sages." Wukong said, "Can one attain long life by such means?" The Patriarch said, "If you want long life through this, it is like setting a pillar inside a wall." Wukong said, "Master, I am an honest sort, and I don't understand marketplace talk.』?」:「。」:「What do you mean by 'setting a pillar inside a wall'?" The Patriarch said, "When people build a house and wish it to be sturdy, they set a supporting pillar within the wall. But one day, when the great hall is about to collapse, that pillar will certainly have rotted through." Wukong said, "By that account, it wouldn't last long either.。」I won't learn it, I won't learn it."

:「?」:「?」:「。」:「?」:「。」:「The Patriarch said, "What if I taught you the Way of the gate of 'Stillness'?" Wukong said, "What true fruition lies in the gate of Stillness?" The Patriarch said, "This involves abstaining from grain and holding to emptiness, being pure and still and taking no action, sitting in meditation and practicing Chan, refraining from speech and keeping fasts, whether through the discipline of sleep or the discipline of standing, along with entering trance and sitting in seclusion." Wukong said, "Can one attain long life this way too?" The Patriarch said, "This is also like an unfired clay brick from the top of a kiln." Wukong laughed and said, "Master, you really are a bit slippery. All along you say I don't understand marketplace talk,』?」:「。」:「but what do you mean by 'an unfired clay brick from the top of a kiln'?" The Patriarch said, "It is just like the raw bricks and tiles shaped atop a kiln — although they have already taken form, they have not yet been tempered by water and fire, and the moment a torrential rain pours down, they will surely dissolve into mud." Wukong said, "That won't last long either.。」I won't learn it, I won't learn it."

:「?」:「?」:「。」:「?」:「。」:「The Patriarch said, "What if I taught you the Way of the gate of 'Action'?" Wukong said, "And what is the Way of the Action gate?" The Patriarch said, "This involves active practice and effort: gathering yin to nourish yang, drawing the bow and treading the crossbow, rubbing the navel to circulate the breath, compounding formulas and refining them, burning thatch and forging cauldrons, taking in red lead, refining autumn stone, along with drinking women's milk, and the like." Wukong said, "Can one attain long life by such things?" The Patriarch said, "To seek long life this way is like scooping the moon out of the water." Wukong said, "Master, there you go again.』?」:「。」:「。」What do you mean by 'scooping the moon out of the water'?" The Patriarch said, "The moon hangs in the vast sky, and its image appears in the water. Although you can see it, there is nowhere to grasp it, and in the end it amounts to nothing but emptiness." Wukong said, "Then I won't learn that either, I won't learn it."

:「?」Hearing this, the Patriarch gave a shout of "Tsk!", leapt down from the high platform, and holding his disciplinary ruler in hand, pointed it at Wukong and said, "You wretched macaque, refusing to learn this and refusing to learn that — what exactly do you intend?" He strode forward and struck Wukong three times upon the head. Then, clasping his hands behind his back, he walked inside, shut the central gate, and left the assembly behind as he departed.:「This gave the whole crowd of listeners such a fright that everyone was alarmed, and all blamed Wukong, saying, "You reckless monkey, you are utterly without manners. When the Master offers to pass on the Way and its methods to you, why refuse to learn and instead talk back to the Master?!」Now that you've offended him this time, who knows when he'll come out again!" At this everyone reproached him bitterly, and also despised and scorned him.滿Wukong was not the least bit troubled, but simply wore an apologetic smile across his face. The truth was that the Monkey King had already seen through the riddle hidden in the Patriarch's actions, and kept it secretly in his heart; that was why he did not argue or contend with the others, but simply bore it in patient silence. The Patriarch's striking him three times was to tell him to be mindful at the third watch;his clasping his hands behind his back, walking inside, and shutting the central gate was to tell him to enter by the back door, where he would secretly pass on the Way to him.

That day, Wukong and the others passed the time happily together before the Cave of the Three Stars, watching for the sky to darken, anxious that evening would never come. When dusk came, he lay down to sleep along with the others, but only feigned closing his eyes, steadying his breath and holding his spirit still.調There was no night-watchman striking the hours or passing the signal arrow in the mountains, so with no way to know the time, he simply regulated the breath passing in and out through his own nostrils.穿When it was roughly the hour of midnight, he rose quietly, put on his clothes, stealthily opened the front door, slipped away from the others, and went outside. Raising his head to look about, it was just this scene:

Watch him now, as he follows the familiar path to the outside of the back door, where he sees that the door stands half open, half closed.:「。」Wukong said joyfully, "The old Master truly means to pass the Way on to me, and that is why he has left the door open." He stepped forward at once, slipped sideways in through the door, and went straight up to the foot of the Patriarch's sleeping couch. He saw the Patriarch curled up with his body drawn in, sleeping with his face toward the wall.Wukong did not dare disturb him, and simply knelt before the couch. Before long the Patriarch awoke, stretched out both legs, and murmured to himself:

:「。」:「?」:「。」:「?」:「。」:「Wukong answered at once, calling out, "Master, your disciple has been kneeling here waiting for a long while." The Patriarch, recognizing the voice as Wukong's, rose at once, threw on his robe, sat up cross-legged, and shouted, "You wretched macaque! Instead of sleeping up front where you belong, what are you doing back here?" Wukong said, "Yesterday before the platform, Master promised in front of everyone that at the third watch you would pass your teaching to your disciple through the back door, and so I made bold to come straight and bow at your honored couch." Hearing this, the Patriarch was greatly pleased, and thought secretly to himself, "This fellow truly is one shaped by Heaven and Earth — otherwise how could he have seen through the hidden riddle in my words?" Wukong said, "There are no other ears here, no one but your disciple alone. I beg the Master, out of great compassion, to pass on to me the Way of long life, and I shall never forget this kindness." The Patriarch said, "Today you have the karmic affinity for it, and I too am glad to speak of it.。」Since you have understood the hidden riddle, come closer and listen carefully, and I shall pass on to you the wondrous Way of long life." Wukong kowtowed in thanks, cleansed his ears and focused his mind, and knelt at the foot of the couch. The Patriarch said:

At this time the root and origin were revealed in full, and as good fortune arrived at Wukong's clever heart, he committed the oral formula earnestly to memory. He bowed to the Patriarch in thanks for this profound kindness, and then went out through the back door to look about.西He saw that in the east the sky had just begun to spread with pale light, while along the western road a great golden brightness shone forth clearly.:「!」Following the same path, he circled round to the front gate, gently pushed it open and went in, and sat down in his usual sleeping place. He then rattled his bedding on purpose and called out, "It's daylight, it's daylight, time to get up!" The others were still fast asleep, and had no idea that Wukong had already obtained something wonderful.調From that day on he rose and mingled with the others as usual, quietly sustaining his practice, and before midnight and after noon he regulated his own breathing in secret.

Before long three years had passed, and the Patriarch once again mounted his precious seat to expound the Dharma to the assembly. What he spoke of were classic cases and figurative sayings; what he discussed was the outward form, the mere wrapping and skin of things.:「?」:「。」:「?」:「。」:「。」:「Suddenly he asked, "Where is Wukong?" Wukong came forward and knelt down: "Your disciple is here." The Patriarch said, "What Way have you been cultivating all this while?" Wukong said, "Of late your disciple has come to understand the nature of the Dharma quite well, and the root and origin have gradually grown firm." The Patriarch said, "Since you have grasped the nature of the Dharma and understood the root and origin, your spirit has already been fixed in your body, but you must still guard against the perils of the Three Calamities." Hearing this, Wukong pondered for a long while and said, "Master, your words are mistaken.I have always heard that when one's attainment of the Way is lofty and one's virtue abundant, one shares longevity with Heaven;when water and fire are brought into balance, the hundred illnesses cannot arise.』?」:「How, then, could there be such a thing as the peril of the Three Calamities?" The Patriarch said, "This is no ordinary Way — it seizes the creative power of Heaven and Earth, and encroaches upon the mysterious workings of the sun and moon;once the elixir is completed, the ghosts and spirits can hardly tolerate it.Although it preserves the countenance and prolongs life, once five hundred years have passed, Heaven will send down a calamity of thunder to strike you, and you must perceive your nature and clarify your mind, so as to escape it beforehand. If you escape it, your years will equal those of Heaven;if you fail to escape it, your life will end right there.Another five hundred years after that, Heaven will send down a calamity of fire to burn you.』。This fire is neither the fire of Heaven nor an ordinary mortal fire — it is called 'Yin fire.'It kindles from the Bubbling Spring point at the very sole of your own feet, and burns straight up through the Palace of Mud-and-Wall, turning the five viscera to ash and the four limbs to rot, so that a thousand years of arduous cultivation all become empty and vain.Another five hundred years after that, a calamity of wind will descend to blow upon you.西』。This wind is not the wind of east, south, west, or north, nor the mild breeze or the golden north wind, nor yet the wind among flowers and willows or pines and bamboo — it is called the 'Bi wind.'穿It blows in through the crown of the head into the six viscera, passes through the cinnabar field, and pierces the nine orifices, so that bone and flesh dissolve and grow porous, and the body comes apart of itself.。」That is why all of these must be escaped."

:「。」:「。」:「?」:「。」Hearing this, Wukong's hair stood on end and his bones turned cold with fright. He kowtowed and bowed, saying, "I beg you, Master, in your great pity, to pass on to me the method for escaping the Three Calamities — to the end I shall never dare forget this kindness." The Patriarch said, "This is not difficult in itself, only that you differ from other people, and so it cannot be passed on to you." Wukong said, "I too have a round head that tops the sky and square feet that tread the earth, and just the same I have nine orifices and four limbs, five viscera and six bowels — how do I differ from other people?" The Patriarch said, "Though you resemble a person, you lack cheeks compared to others." For indeed that monkey had gaunt, bony cheekbones, a sunken face, and a pointed mouth.:「Wukong reached up and felt his own face, and said with a laugh, "Master, you haven't reckoned this rightly.。」:「Though I may lack cheeks, I have this pouch of a jaw that others don't, which surely makes up for it." The Patriarch said, "Very well then. Which of the two will you learn? There is one that follows the number of the Heavenly Ladle, which grants thirty-six transformations;。」:「。」:「。」and there is one that follows the number of the Earthly Fiends, which grants seventy-two transformations." Wukong said, "Your disciple would rather grasp at the greater number — let me learn the seventy-two transformations of the Earthly Fiends." The Patriarch said, "Since that is so, come forward, and I will pass the oral formula to you." Thereupon he leaned close to Wukong's ear and spoke in a low voice, and no one knew what wondrous method he imparted. As for the Monkey King, once one aperture of his understanding opened, a hundred apertures opened along with it; at once he practiced the oral formula, cultivating and refining it on his own, until he had mastered all seventy-two transformations.

Then one day, the Patriarch and his disciples were enjoying the evening scenery together before the Cave of the Three Stars.:「?」:「。」:「。」:「。」:「The Patriarch said, "Wukong, has your work come to fruition yet?" Wukong said, "Thanks to the Master's vast kindness, your disciple's efforts are now complete, and I am already able to rise upon the clouds and soar aloft." The Patriarch said, "Try rising into flight and let me see." Wukong showed off his skill: with a single spring of his body he turned a series of somersaults, leapt some five or six zhang off the ground, and treading upon clouds and mist went off for about the time it takes to eat a meal; yet when he circled back he had gone no more than three li, and landed before the Patriarch, clasping his hands and saying, "Master, this is what it means to rise in flight and ride the clouds." The Patriarch laughed and said, "This can hardly be called riding the clouds — it can only be called crawling the clouds.:『。』。」 As the old saying goes, 'Immortals roam the North Sea in the morning and reach Cangwu by evening.' Look at you — half a day, and you haven't even gone three li; that can't even properly be called crawling the clouds." Wukong said, "What does it mean, 'roam the North Sea in the morning and reach Cangwu by evening'?" The Patriarch said, "As for those who ride the clouds, in the early morning they set out from the North Sea, roam past the East Sea, the West Sea, and the South Sea, and then turn back to Cangwu.Cangwu is simply another name used at Lingling in the North Sea.。」:「。」:「。」:「。」:「To roam all beyond the Four Seas in a single day — only that can properly be called riding the clouds." Wukong said, "That is difficult indeed, difficult indeed." The Patriarch said, "Nothing under Heaven is difficult; it only fears the person with a determined heart." Hearing these words, Wukong kowtowed and bowed, and said, "Master, if one helps a person, one ought to help him all the way through — please be so generous as to grant me your great compassion and pass this method of riding the clouds on to me completely as well, and I shall never dare forget this kindness." The Patriarch said, "Whenever the various immortals ride the clouds, they all rise by stamping their feet, but you are not like that.Just now, when I watched you go, you only managed to leap up after several somersaults in a row.。」:「。」:「。」I will now simply base it on that motion of yours, and teach you the Cloud Somersault instead." Wukong bowed once more in earnest entreaty, and the Patriarch then imparted the oral formula, saying, "For this cloud, you form the hand sign, recite the true words, clench your fists tight, give your body a shake, and leap up — and with a single somersault you will cover a hundred and eight thousand li." Hearing this, the assembly all laughed merrily and said, "What good fortune for Wukong — if he masters this trick, he could serve as a courier running errands, delivering documents or passing along dispatches for people, and wherever he went he'd always find himself a meal." As dusk fell, master and disciples each returned to their own quarters in the cave.

That very night, Wukong set his spirit to work refining the method, and mastered the Cloud Somersault. From then on, day after day he lived free and unfettered, at ease and carefree — this too was one of the joys of long life.

One day, as spring departed and summer arrived, the whole assembly gathered beneath the pine trees and talked together for a long while.:「The assembly said, "Wukong, from what past life did you cultivate such karmic fortune??」:「。」:「。」:「The other day, when the old Master leaned close to your ear and spoke low, teaching you the method of escaping the Three Calamities through transformation — have you mastered it all?" Wukong laughed and said, "I won't hide it from you, elder brothers — partly it was the Master's teaching, and partly it was my own diligence day and night, and so I have mastered every one of those skills." The assembly said, "Take this good moment, and try performing it for us to see." On hearing this, Wukong roused his spirits and, eager to show off his skill, said, "Let my fellow disciples propose a subject.?」:「。」What would you have me transform into?" The assembly said, "Just turn into a pine tree." Wukong formed the hand sign, recited the incantation, shook himself, and changed at once into a pine tree.Truly it was:

:「!」Seeing this, the assembly clapped their hands and roared with laughter, all saying, "What a fine monkey, what a fine monkey!" In their excitement they made such a clamor that they disturbed the Patriarch.:「?」The Patriarch hurriedly took up his staff and came out the door to ask, "Who is making such a racket here?" Hearing him call out, the assembly hastily composed themselves, straightened their robes, and came forward.:「。」:「Wukong too resumed his original form and, mingling in among the crowd, said, "We beg to report to the honored Master: we were simply gathered here in discussion, and there was no outsider making a disturbance." The Patriarch shouted angrily, "The way you all shout and cry out is nothing at all like the bearing of those who cultivate the Way!?」:「For one who cultivates the Way, opening the mouth scatters the spirit and vital breath, and moving the tongue gives rise to disputes — how then can you be shouting and laughing here?" The assembly said, "We would not dare deceive the Master — just now Sun Wukong was performing a transformation for fun.。」We asked him to turn into a pine tree, and sure enough he became a pine tree; the disciples all praised and cheered him, and so our loud voices disturbed the honored Master — we beg you to forgive our offense."

:「。」:「The Patriarch said, "You may all rise." Then he called out, "Wukong, come here!I ask you, what spirit possessed you, that you had to transform into a pine tree?Is this the kind of skill that one ought to show off in front of others?Suppose you saw that someone else had such a skill — would you not beg it of him?Once others see that you have it, they will surely beg it of you.If you fear bringing trouble on yourself, you will have to teach it to them;。」:「。」:「。」 :「。」:「and if you refuse to teach it, they will surely do you harm — and then your very life could not be preserved." Wukong kowtowed and said, "I only beg the Master to forgive my offense." The Patriarch said, "I am not going to punish you, but you must leave this place." On hearing this, Wukong's eyes filled with falling tears, and he said, "Master, where would you have me go?" The Patriarch said, "Simply go back the way you came from." Wukong suddenly came to himself and said, "I came from Shuilian Dong on Huaguo Shan, in Aolai Guo, in Dongsheng Shenzhou." The Patriarch said, "Hurry back there, and preserve your life;。」:「。」:「。」if you remain here, it is absolutely forbidden." Wukong accepted his fault, and addressed the honored Master, saying, "I have also been away from home for twenty years now. Though I long to look again on my old children and grandchildren, I have been thinking of the Master's deep kindness, which I have not yet repaid, and so I have not dared to leave." The Patriarch said, "There is no debt of kindness to speak of there — just see that you cause no trouble, and do not implicate me, and that will be enough."

Seeing there was nothing else to be done, Wukong had no choice but to bow in farewell, and took his leave of the assembly.:「The Patriarch said, "Once you go this time, you are bound to stir up trouble. No matter how you bring on disaster or commit violence, you must never say that you are my disciple.!」:「便。」If you utter so much as half a word of it, I will know at once, and I will strip the skin from your bones, you wretched macaque, and banish your soul and spirit down into the Ninefold Darkness, so that through ten thousand kalpas you shall never be able to turn yourself over again!" Wukong said, "I would never dare breathe a single word about the Master — I shall simply say that I learned it all myself."

Wukong gave his thanks, then turned at once, formed the hand sign, threw himself into a series of somersaults, sprang up onto his Cloud Somersault, and headed straight back to Dongsheng. Before even a single double-hour had passed, he could already see Huaguo Shan and Shuilian Dong. The Handsome Monkey King, knowing his own joy, murmured quietly to himself:

Wukong brought his cloud down and went straight to Huaguo Shan, seeking out the path as he walked.Suddenly he heard the cry of cranes and the wailing of gibbons: the cranes' cries soared beyond the clouds and the Milky Way, while the gibbons' wailing was mournful and full of grief.:「!」:「He opened his mouth at once and called out, "Children, I have come back!" From beside the stone ledges beneath the cliffs, from among the flowers and grasses, from within the trees, monkeys great and small leapt out by the thousands and tens of thousands, surrounding the Handsome Monkey King in their midst, kowtowing and calling out, "Great King, how easy your heart must have been, to stay away so long! You left all of us stranded here, longing for you as if starved and parched.Of late a demon has come and bullied us here, trying by force to seize our Water Curtain cave-dwelling, and we, giving no thought to life or death, fought against him.During this time that wretch has plundered our household goods and captured many of our sons and nephews, forcing us to go without sleep day and night, standing guard over what remains of our home.。」:「Fortunately the Great King has now returned — had you stayed away another year, even this mountain and cave would have belonged to someone else." Hearing this, Wukong grew furious at heart and said, "What demon is this, that dares to behave so outrageously?。」:「。」:「?」:「。」:「。」Tell me the whole of it in detail, and I will go find him and take revenge." The monkeys kowtowed and said, "We report to the Great King: that wretch calls himself the Hunshi Demon King, and dwells due north of here." Wukong said, "From here to his place, how great a distance is it?" The monkeys said, "He comes on clouds and leaves on mist, sometimes on wind, sometimes on rain, sometimes amid lightning, sometimes amid thunder — we do not know how far it is." Wukong said, "Since that is so, do not be afraid, just go on playing as usual, and wait while I go find him."

Good Monkey King — he gave his body a spring, leapt up, and somersaulted all the way north to look down, where he saw a high mountain, truly most precipitous. What a mountain:

The Handsome Monkey King was silently taking in the scenery when he suddenly heard the sound of voices, and went straight down the mountain to search them out.It turned out that in front of that sheer cliff lay the Shuizang Cave.Outside the cave gate a few little demons were capering about; seeing Wukong, they fled at once.:「Wukong called out, "Don't run!Lend me your mouths to speak, and carry back to your master what is on my mind.I am the lord of the Water Curtain Cave on the Mountain of Flowers and Fruit, due south of here.。」What sort of world-confounding demon is your master, that he has again and again bullied my children and grandchildren? I have come especially to seek him out and settle who is the better of us."

:「!」:「?」:「。」:「On hearing this, the little demon ran hurriedly into the cave to report, "Great King, disaster!" The demon king said, "What disaster?" The little demon said, "Outside the cave there is a monkey-head who calls himself the Lord of the Water Curtain Cave on the Mountain of Flowers and Fruit. He says you have repeatedly bullied his children and grandchildren, and has come specially to find you and settle who is the better." The demon king laughed and said, "I have often heard those monkey spirits say they have a Great King who left home to cultivate the Way — I suppose this must be him, come at last. What did you see him got up as??」:「穿。」:「。」Does he carry any weapon?" The little demon said, "He has no weapon at all — his head bare, wearing a red robe, cinched with a yellow sash, and on his feet a pair of black boots. He looks neither monk nor layman, and not like a Daoist or an immortal either; bare-handed and empty-fisted, he is shouting away outside the gate." Hearing this, the demon king said, "Fetch my armor and my weapon." The little demon brought them at once.

穿:「?」The demon king put on his armor, took up his saber, and came out the gate with his crowd of demons, calling out loudly, "Which of you is the Lord of the Water Curtain Cave?" Wukong opened his eyes wide to look, and saw that demon king:

:「。」:「滿?」:「The Monkey King shouted, "This vile fiend has such big eyes and still can't see old Sun!" Seeing him, the demon king laughed and said, "You're not four feet tall, no more than thirty years old, and have no weapon in hand — how dare you be so brazen and reckless, coming to find me to settle who's the better?" Wukong cursed, "You vile fiend, so you really have no eyes. You reckon me small — but growing tall would be no trouble at all;you reckon me weaponless — but with these two hands I could hook down the moon at the edge of the sky.。」Don't be afraid — just take a punch from old Sun!" With a spring he leapt up and struck straight at his face.:「The demon king thrust out a hand to block it and said, "You're so stunted and short, and I'm so tall and long;使使you mean to use your fists, but I mean to use my saber.使If I use the saber and kill you, people would only laugh at me.使。」:「Let me set down my saber and try a bout of boxing with you instead." Wukong said, "Well said.。」便Come on then, good fellow." The demon king dropped his guard and struck, and Wukong plunged straight in to meet him.The two of them pounded with fists and kicked with feet, charging and clashing. As it turned out, long, sweeping punches look grand but are hollow, while short, close blows are solid and sure. The demon king, jabbed by Wukong in the short ribs and struck in the groin, took several hits to his joints that hurt him badly. He dodged aside, snatched up his broad steel saber, and slashed straight down at Wukong's head.Wukong quickly pulled his body back, and the blow cut through empty air.使:「!」Seeing how fierce the demon was, Wukong at once used his technique of a body outside his body: he plucked out a handful of hairs, tossed them into his mouth, chewed them to bits, and spat them out into the air, shouting, "Change!" — and they instantly turned into two or three hundred little monkeys, swarming around on every side.

It turns out that once a person attains an immortal body, his spirit can transform without limit.Little did anyone know that ever since this Monkey King had attained the Way, he had eighty-four thousand hairs on his body, every single one able to transform, changing to match whatever he wished. Those little monkeys were sharp-eyed and nimble, so that swords swung at them could not land and spears thrust at them could not wound them.Just watch him — leaping forward and springing back, they swarmed up and surrounded the demon king: some grabbing hold, some tugging, some scrambling between his legs, some seizing his feet, kicking and striking, plucking his hair, gouging his eyes, pinching his nose, hoisting and tossing him about, until they had beaten him into one tangled heap.Only then did Wukong manage to snatch away his saber; parting the little monkeys, he brought it down on the crown of the demon's head with a single blow and cut him in two.He then led the troop, killing their way into the cave, and wiped out every last demon, great and small. He then gave his hairs a shake to gather them back onto his body, but found that some would not return — these turned out to be the little monkeys the demon king had once carried off, captured from the Water Curtain Cave.:「?」:「Wukong asked, "How did you all come to be here?" There were some thirty or fifty of them, and all said through tears, "After the Great King left us to cultivate immortality, these past two years he came and fought us, and carried us all off.Aren't those our own household goods from our cave over there?。」:「。」The stone basins and stone bowls were all taken by that wretch and brought here." Wukong said, "Since these are our own household goods, carry them all outside." He then set fire to the cave, burning the Shuizang Cave to a dry cinder, and it was all reduced to ash.:「。」:「?」:「He said to the crowd, "All of you follow me home." The monkeys said, "Great King, when we were brought here we only heard the wind roaring past our ears and drifted here as if floating on air; we don't even know the way back — how can we get home now?" Wukong said, "That was just some trick of his sorcery — what's hard about that? Now that I have mastered one opening, all the hundred openings are mastered too, and I know this trick as well.。」Close your eyes, all of you, and don't be afraid."

Good Monkey King — he recited a spell, rode up a gust of fierce wind, and dropped down from the clouds.:「。」He called out, "Open your eyes, children." The monkeys' feet touched solid ground, and recognizing it as their home, every one of them was overjoyed, and they all ran for the old path to the cave gate. The monkeys who had remained in the cave all crowded out together to join them, arranging themselves by rank and age to bow in homage to the Monkey King. They laid out wine and fruit to welcome him home and celebrate, and asked him in detail about subduing the demon and rescuing the children.:「。」 Wukong told the whole story from beginning to end, and the monkeys praised him without end, saying, "Great King, wherever you went, however did you learn such skill!" Wukong went on, "In the years since I parted from you all, I drifted with the waves and currents, floated across the Eastern Ocean, reached the land of Xiniuhezhou, then went straight on to Nanzhanbuzhou, where I learned to take on a human form, put on these clothes, and wore these shoes. Swaggering along, I wandered as a cloud for eight or nine years and more, yet still had not attained the Way. :「!」:「。」:「?」:「。」:「……Then I crossed the Western Ocean again and reached the land of Xiniuhezhou, where I sought and inquired for a long while, and was fortunate enough to meet an old Patriarch, who passed on to me the true attainment of a life as long as Heaven's, the great method of deathless, everlasting life." The monkeys hailed him with congratulations, all saying, "Such a chance comes not once in ten thousand kalpas!" Wukong then laughed and said, "My little ones, there is another joy — our whole line now has a surname." The monkeys said, "What is the Great King's surname?" Wukong said, "My surname now is Sun, and my religious name is Wukong." Hearing this, the monkeys clapped their hands in delight and said, "If the Great King is Old Sun, then we are all Second Sun, Third Sun, Wee Sun, Little Sun...!」...one family of Suns, one nation of Suns, one whole nest of Suns!" And they all came to wait upon Old Sun, with big bowls and small cups of coconut wine and grape wine, immortal flowers and immortal fruit — it was truly a joyous gathering for the whole family.Ay!

In the end, we do not know what came of it all, nor how things fared in this realm from start to finish — listen to the next chapter for the telling.

What it’s about

Subodhi offers Wukong several fashionable arts, but he rejects anything that cannot defeat death. Taught secretly, he masters longevity, seventy-two transformations and the cloud-somersault. When he shows off by becoming a pine tree, Subodhi expels him and forbids him to reveal his teacher. Home again, Wukong defeats a demon who has preyed on his monkeys.

Education expands Wukong's capacity to protect his people and his capacity to cause disaster. He learns every technique quickly but not the humility meant to govern it; applause matters too much. Subodhi's warning and disappearance ensure that the skills driving the adventure arrive already attached to an unresolved ethical failure.

When it was written 背景

This 回 supplies Wukong's signature magical repertoire and the rule that he never names his teacher. Apprenticeship usually disciplines a hero, while this one leaves pride intact. Learners should track the repeated language of teaching, transformation and departure rather than treating the numbered arts as a systematic doctrinal catalogue.
