Off to the City
On the eve of her departure, Jinzhi sharpened her scissors on the steel rim of the water vat, then used them to cut up her dead child’s diapers. The young widow was living at her mother’s house.

Are you really leaving tomorrow?”

Her mother, asleep beside her, woke in the lamplight and, with infinite tenderness, seemed to seek comfort within a fate already decided.
“I’m not leaving. I’ll wait another couple of days,” Jinzhi answered.
Not long afterward, the old woman woke again. She could no longer sleep, and when she saw that her daughter was not beside her but washing something on the floor, she sat up and asked:

「你是明天走嗎?“Are you leaving tomorrow?再住三兩天不能夠吧!」Can’t you stay another two or three days?”
Jinzhi packed her things during the night; her mother knew she meant to leave. Jinzhi said:

「娘,我走兩天,就回來,娘……“Ma, I’ll go away for a couple of days and then come back. Ma...
The old woman seemed to be groping for something and made no further sound.

The sun was already very high, yet Jinzhi still nestled beside her ailing mother. Her mother said:
「要走嗎?“You’re going, then? If you must go, then go! Go and earn some money! I won’t stand in your way.” There was a desolate note in her mother’s voice:
“But you must behave yourself. Don’t pick up other people’s ways, and don’t have dealings with men.”
Women no longer blamed their husbands. She cried to her mother:
「這不都是小日本子嗎?“Isn’t all this because of those little Japanese? Those little Japanese deserve to be cut to pieces!不走等死嗎?」If I don’t leave, am I to stay here and wait for death?”
Jinzhi had heard the old people say that a woman traveling alone should make herself look old or ugly and tie a belt around her waist. She hung her oil jar at her side and the little bucket that held her rice from the belt, stuffed into the bucket a small bundle containing needles, thread, and scraps of cloth, and disguised herself as an old beggar woman, smearing her face with dust until it was filthy and streaked.

As she was leaving, her mother took the silver hoop from her own ear and said:
「你把這個帶去吧!“Take this with you! Put it in your bundle, and don’t let anyone snatch it away. I haven’t a penny to give you; if you get hungry, sell it and buy yourself some dry provisions!” Even after she had gone out the door, she could still hear her mother saying, “If you meet the Japanese, quickly hide under the wormwood.”
Jinzhi went a long way and down the slope, but her mother’s words still repeated themselves in her ears: “Buy yourself some dry provisions.” Confused fancies churned in her mind. She did not know how far she had gone; it was as though she were fleeing from home, walking quickly without once looking back. Even the narrow path was overgrown with short grass, and the short grass itself hindered Jinzhi’s hurrying feet.

Japanese soldiers rode past along the main road in a horse-drawn cart, smoking. Jinzhi began to tremble! Remembering her mother’s words, she quickly lay down among the wormwood beside the road. After the Japanese soldiers had passed, she rose with her heart pounding and looked wildly all around: where was her mother? Her native village lay far behind her, and ahead she came to yet another unfamiliar village, making her feel as though she had passed through countless human worlds.

The red sun was about to sink beyond the horizon, and people’s shadows lay across the ground, long and thin as poles. Once she crossed the little bridge over the river, there would not be much farther to go!
In the hazy distance, the factory chimneys of Harbin thrust into the clouds.
Jinzhi drank at the riverbank. She turned to look toward her native village, but it was too far away to be seen. There were only the high hilltops; below them, it was impossible to tell smoke from trees. Her mother was there, in the shadow of that smoke and those trees.
She found it so hard to tear herself away from the hills of home that her heart seemed to leap within her breast! Jinzhi felt as though her heart had been plucked out and flung she knew not where! She no longer wanted to go on, but she forced herself across the bridge and turned onto another narrow path. Ahead, the city of Harbin beckoned her; behind, the hills of home bade her farewell.
No wormwood grew along this path. If Japanese soldiers came, was she to hide in a crack in the earth? She searched all around. Her heart would not steady itself, and sweat poured excessively down her face; at last the Japanese soldiers spotted her.
「你的……“You there... Stop.”
Jinzhi seemed to have been struck by a bullet and tumbled into a little ditch. The Japanese soldiers came closer and looked at her filthy, sweat-covered face. Like fat ducks, they made noises with their mouths and waddled on without troubling her! Long after they had gone, she still did not rise. Then she began to cry. Her wooden bucket lay overturned, and the little bundle had rolled out of it. When she began walking again, her shadow on the ground grew longer and thinner, until it was like a fine thread.
That night in Harbin, Jinzhi slept on the boards covering a gutter in a narrow street. It was a street of petty laborers and rickshaw pullers. There were little eating houses and prostitutes of the lowest class; the prostitutes’ bright-red trousers appeared again and again in the doorways of the little mud houses. Idlers struck affected poses and slowly joked and chatted with the red-trousered women; then they went into the little rooms and came out again a while later. But no one paid any attention to the ragged, disheveled Jinzhi. She huddled there like a rubbish bin, like a sick dog.

There were not even any policemen on this street. An old beggar woman quarreled with a waiter from one of the little eating houses.
The sky was ablaze with stars, but they were all so remote! They were things wholly cut off from Jinzhi. After midnight, a little dog came to Jinzhi’s side. Perhaps it too was a little dog that had suffered? The stray crawled into the wooden bucket to sleep. When Jinzhi awoke, the sun had still not risen, and countless stars crowded the sky.
Many homeless people still pressed around the entrances of the eating houses, waiting for the last handouts.
The bones of Jinzhi’s legs ached as though they were broken, and she did not dare stand. At last she too squeezed into the crowd of beggars and waited a long time, but no waiter came out with food. Sleeping in the open in April had sent chills striking through her heart. When others looked at her, she felt ashamed of her appearance, so she endured her hunger and returned to her former place.

The streets at night—what kind of human world was this? Jinzhi called softly for her mother, her body twitching and convulsing without cease on the gutter boards. She despaired and wept, yet, like the little dog asleep in the wooden bucket, she went entirely unnoticed; it was as though neither of them existed in the human world.
At daybreak, she did not feel hungry, only hollow; her mind was utterly empty! Under a street tree, she met an old seamstress coming toward her and asked:
I’ve only just arrived—I’ve just come from the countryside...”
Seeing how awkward and embarrassed she looked, the seamstress ignored her and walked away, her face pale in the cool morning.
The little dog with the curled tail nestled against the wooden bucket as though nestling against its mother; it probably found the morning too cold.
People gradually began coming and going at the little eating houses. A heap of steaming white mantou appeared in a window.
「老嬸娘,我新從鄉下來,……“Auntie, I’ve just come from the countryside...我跟你去,去賺幾個錢吧!」Let me go with you and earn a little money!”
The second time, Jinzhi succeeded. The old woman led her away, and together they passed through bustling streets, streets that gave off foul vapors. Only then did Jinzhi seem to understand that this was no longer the countryside: here there was only strangeness, estrangement, and a lack of all human feeling. Along the way, apart from the chickens and fish outside the eating houses and the smell of food, it seemed that she saw nothing and heard nothing.

“This is how you sew up the socks.”
Outside an “Opium Monopoly Shop” with a gold-lettered sign, Jinzhi opened her little bundle, cut a corner from a piece of cloth with her scissors, and patched the torn sock of a man she did not know. The old woman went on instructing her:
“Just stitch it up quickly. Never mind whether it’s neat or not—as long as the hole is closed, it counts.”
Jinzhi had not a trace of strength, as though she wished only to die quickly; however hard she tried, she could not keep her eyes open. A motorcar swept close past her. Then a policeman came over and ordered her:
「到那邊去!“Move over there!這裡也是你們縫窮的地方?」Is this any place for the likes of you to do your wretched mending?”
Jinzhi hurriedly raised her head and said, “Officer, I’ve only just come from the countryside. I don’t know the rules yet.”
In the countryside she had grown used to addressing soldiers as “Officer,” so she called the policeman “Officer” too, for he looked just as imposing to her and also wore a gun at his waist. Everyone laughed at her, and the policeman laughed too. The old seamstress instructed her again:
“Pay no attention to him, and don’t bother talking. If he scolds you, just move back a step, and that’s the end of it.”
Jinzhi immediately felt ashamed. Looking at her clothes, she saw that they were unlike everyone else’s; all at once she hated the battered jar she had brought from the countryside and gave it a kick.
When the sock was mended, the hollow feeling in her belly still did not cease. If she had known how, she would have gone anywhere at all to steal something to eat. For a long while she let her needle rest and stared closely at a child standing in the street eating a biscuit; even after the child put the very last piece into his mouth, she continued to stare.
When you finish, we’ll have lunch...可是你吃了早飯沒有?」But haven’t you eaten breakfast?”
Jinzhi was so touched by this kindness that she almost burst into tears. She wanted to say:
“I haven’t eaten a thing since yesterday; I haven’t even had any water.”
At noon they set off alongside the ghostlike people emerging from the “opium den.” The women workers’ lodging had a peculiar stagnant air that reminded Jinzhi once more that this was not the countryside. Yet it was not until after the meal, when everyone washed their faces in basins, that she noticed those listless eyes and sallow faces. The single room was more than five zhang long, with no partitions, and all around its walls were smeared with bedbug blood, elongated specks of black and purple trailing across every wall. Bundles reeking with fermented filth were piled along the walls. These assorted women each seemed to be suffering from some illness. Resting their heads on the bundles, they talked:
“The lady of the household where I work treats me well. We eat the same food; even when there are stuffed buns, I get stuffed buns too.”
The others chimed in, envying her. After a while, someone else told how a male servant at the mansion had twisted her mouth. She said it had made her ill with anger, then went on rambling without a pause. Jinzhi could not yet make sense of all this confused, tiresome talk. She was pondering carefully: what was a mansion? And what was a ‘lady’? She taxed her mind over it, then asked a short-haired woman beside her who was smoking:
Doesn’t ‘lady’ just mean an old lady?”
The woman did not answer. She dropped her pipe and went off to vomit. She said she had swallowed a fly with her food. But on the long plank kang that ran the length of the room, those city women laughed in a way that disgusted Jinzhi, doubling over and collapsing against one another. Delighted to be laughing at this country woman, they slapped one another’s shoulders; some laughed so hard that tears came to their eyes. Jinzhi, however, sat quietly to one side. When it was time to sleep that night, she said to the old woman she had just met:
It seems to me Harbin isn’t as nice as the countryside. The women back home are very friendly. Just look how they laughed at me and clapped their hands this noon!”
As she spoke she wrapped her bundle tighter, for hidden inside it were the two-jiao bills she had earned; Jinzhi pillowed her head on the bundle and began to sleep amid the bedbugs of the city.
Jinzhi had earned a great deal of money! She sewed a small pocket into her waistband, put the two-yuan bills inside, and then stitched the opening shut. When the women's lodging house asked her for the fee, she said to the person:
「晚幾天給不行嗎?"Can't I pay a few days later? I haven't earned any money yet." Having no other way out, she said further:
「晚上給吧!"I'll pay tonight! I've just come from the countryside."
But in the end the woman would not leave; she waved her hand right before Jinzhi's eyes. More and more women gathered, surrounding Jinzhi. It was as if she were performing a trick, drawing such a crowd of onlookers; among them was a fat woman in her thirties, her hair entirely gone, her pink scalp gleaming, standing out alone above the others; her neck seemed fitted with a trembling wire, so that the shining skull turned lightly and freely, quivering, and she said to Jinzhi:

What it’s about
Going to the city holds out escape, information and employment, but the journey also exposes how little protection movement guarantees. For villagers pressed by occupation and poverty, the city is imagined before it is known: a place of modern institutions and wider possibilities, yet also of strangers, costs and humiliations. Xiao Hong follows the hopes attached to departure without adopting the assumption that urban life automatically enlightens or rescues rural people.
Leaving alters relationships at home. A traveller carries expectations belonging to a whole family and returns—if return is possible—with knowledge that may not fit village speech. Distance can sharpen political awareness, but it can also turn displacement into another form of isolation. The chapter expands the novel's map beyond fields and lanes while keeping its focus on bodily need: food, shelter, illness and fatigue determine what the city means in practice. Movement that looks like choice is often compelled. In that tension, the journey anticipates Xiao Hong's own repeated flights without converting biography into a simple key to the fiction.
When it was written 背景
Xiao Hong knew forced mobility intimately. She left Hulan and Harbin, lived precariously in several cities, and reached Shanghai in 1934 as a refugee from the occupied northeast. 生死場 nevertheless distinguishes its villagers' limited journeys from the author's later literary career. Published in 1935, the chapter addresses a modern Chinese pattern in which war, debt and labour drew rural people toward cities that promised opportunity while treating migrants as disposable. Learners can follow place names, travel verbs and contrasts between expectation and encounter. The shift of setting is also structural: after the claustrophobic village chapters, urban space enlarges the story geographically without resolving the vulnerability accumulated there.
