My Old Home

Braving the bitter cold, I traveled back to my hometown, over two thousand li away, from which I had been parted for more than twenty years.

It was, moreover, the depth of winter; As I drew near my old home the sky grew overcast again, and a cold wind blew into the cabin of the boat, moaning; looking out through the gaps in the awning, under the pale yellow sky lay, near and far, a few desolate villages, without a trace of life.Unconsciously a feeling of desolation rose up in my heart.

Ah!Could this be the hometown I had been remembering all these twenty years?

The hometown I remembered was not like this at all.My hometown was much better than this. But if I tried to recall its beauty, to put into words its charms, there was no image, no words to be found.彿It seemed as though it had always been just like this.,——So I explained it to myself: my hometown had always been like this — though it had not improved, neither was it necessarily as desolate as I now felt it to be; this was merely a change in my own mood, for I had come back this time with no good frame of mind to begin with.

This time I had come solely to bid it farewell. The old house where our whole clan had lived together for many years had already been sold, jointly, to people of another surname, and the date for handing it over was set within this very year; so I had to hurry, before New Year's Day, to bid a final farewell to the familiar old house, and to leave far behind the familiar hometown, moving to the strange place where I earn my living.

The next day, early in the morning, I arrived at the gate of my home.On the ridge of the roof many broken stalks of withered grass, trembling in the wind, were explaining just why the old house could not help but change hands.Several branches of the family had probably already moved away, so it was very quiet.便When I reached the outside of our own rooms, my mother had already come out to meet me, and right behind her darted out my eight-year-old nephew Hong'er.

My mother was very pleased, but hid behind her pleasure a good deal of a forlorn look; she had me sit down, rest, and drink tea, without mentioning the matter of the move for the time being.Hong'er, having never seen me before, stood at a distance opposite me and only stared.

But in the end we did get around to talking about the move.I said that I had already rented lodgings elsewhere and bought a few pieces of furniture, and that besides this all the wooden furniture in the house would have to be sold, to buy more later.便My mother agreed this was fine, and said the luggage was already more or less packed, and that a small part of the wooden furniture too cumbersome to move had already been sold, only the money for it had not yet been collected.

You rest for a day or two, go and pay a visit to our relatives and family, and then we can leave,' said my mother.

。』'Yes.'

'And then there's Runtu — every time he comes to our house he always asks after you, and would very much like to see you once.。』I've already let him know roughly the date of your arrival, and he may well come.'

At this, a marvelous picture suddenly flashed into my mind: beneath a deep blue sky hung a golden round moon, and below lay the sandy ground by the sea, planted as far as the eye could see with jade-green watermelons; among them stood a boy of eleven or twelve, a silver ring around his neck, gripping a steel pitchfork in his hand, thrusting with all his might at a zha, which twisted its body and escaped right between his legs.

This boy was Runtu. When I first knew him, I was no more than ten-odd years old myself — that would be close to thirty years ago now;at that time my father was still alive, our family circumstances were good, and I was very much a young master. That year, it was our family's turn to take charge of a great ancestral sacrifice. This sacrifice, it was said, came round only once in more than thirty years, so it was taken very seriously;in the first month the ancestral portraits were set out for offering, there were many offerings, the ritual vessels were very elaborate, and many people came to worship, so the vessels also had to be carefully guarded against theft. My family had only one 'busy-month' worker (in our parts, those who work for others are divided into three kinds: one who works for a fixed family all year round is called a 'long-hand';one who works for others by the day is called a 'short-hand';),便and one who farms his own land too, and comes to work for a fixed family only at New Year, festivals, or rent-collecting time, is called a 'busy-month') — and he could not keep up with the work, so he said to my father that he could send for his son Runtu to look after the ritual vessels.

My father agreed;彿I too was delighted, for I had long since heard the name Runtu, and knew that he was about the same age as I, born in an intercalary month, and lacking the element 'earth' (tu) in his Five Elements, so his father had named him Runtu (Intercalary Earth). He was able to set traps to catch little birds.

So day after day I looked forward to the New Year; when New Year came, Runtu would come too.便At last, with great difficulty, the end of the year arrived, and one day my mother told me Runtu had come, so I ran flying to see him.He was there in the kitchen — a round, purplish face, a small felt cap on his head, and around his neck a gleaming silver ring, which showed how much his father loved him and, fearing he might die, had made a vow before the gods and Buddha and bound him with the ring to hold him fast to life.便便He was very shy with people, but was not afraid of me alone, and when no one else was around he would talk with me, so that in less than half a day we had become close friends.

I no longer remember what we talked about then; I only recall that Runtu was very pleased, saying that since coming to town he had seen many things he had never seen before.

The next day I got him to catch birds for me.He said:

'That's no good.It has to wait till heavy snow has fallen. On our sandy ground, after it snows, I sweep clear a patch of open ground, prop up a big bamboo sieve with a short stick, scatter husked grain beneath it, and when I see the birds come to eat, I just give a pull, from far off, to the string tied to the stick, and the birds are caught under the sieve.……』'There's every kind — rice-birds, horned pheasants, wood-pigeons, blue-backs...'

So then I longed very much for it to snow.

Runtu also said to me:

'It's too cold now — you should come to our place in summer.西。』In the daytime we go to the seashore to gather shells — there are red ones and green ones, there's the 'ghost-scarer' shell, and the 'Guanyin hand' shell too; and at night my dad and I go to watch the watermelons, and you can come too.'

?』'Watch out for thieves?'

'No.If a traveler gets thirsty and picks a melon to eat, in our parts that isn't counted as stealing. What we have to watch out for is badgers, hedgehogs, and zha.Under the moonlight, listen — there's a rustling sound, that's the zha gnawing at the melons.便……』Then you grip your pitchfork and creep quietly forward...'

At the time I had no idea what sort of creature this so-called zha was — indeed I still don't know even now — I just had the vague feeling that it looked like a small dog and was very fierce.

?』'Doesn't it bite people?'

'There's the pitchfork.便When you get close and see the zha, you thrust at it.The creature is very clever — instead it runs straight at you and darts away right between your legs.。……』Its fur is as slippery as oil...'

I had never known there were so many novel things in the world: that at the seashore there were shells of so many colors;西that watermelons had such a dangerous history to them — before, I had only known that they were sold in the fruit shop.

。……』'On our sandy ground, when the tide is about to come in, there are lots of jumping fish that just keep hopping, each with two legs like a frog's...'

Ah!In Runtu's heart there was an inexhaustible store of marvelous things, all of them unknown to my usual friends. They knew nothing of these things; while Runtu was living by the sea, they, like me, could only see the square patch of sky above the high courtyard walls.

Unfortunately, the first month passed and Runtu had to go back home; I was so upset I cried loudly, and he too hid himself in the kitchen, crying and refusing to come out, but in the end his father carried him off.西Later he still had his father bring me a packet of shells and a few very pretty bird feathers; I too sent him a thing or two once or twice, but from then on we never saw each other again.

Now that my mother had brought him up, all these memories of my childhood suddenly sprang back to life like a flash of lightning, and it was as though I had glimpsed my beautiful hometown once more.I answered at once:

'That's wonderful!,——?……』How is he — how is he doing?...'

?……'Him?...……』便,『His circumstances are not at all good either...' my mother said, and then looked out toward the door, 'These people are here again.便。』They say they've come to buy furniture, but they help themselves to whatever they please as well — I'd better go and see.'

My mother stood up and went out.便Outside the door there were several women's voices; so I called Hong'er over to me and chatted idly with him, asking whether he could write yet, and whether he was willing to leave home.

?』'Are we going by train?'

。』'We're going by train.'

?』'What about a boat?'

,……』'First we take a boat, then...'

'Ha!Look at you now!!』Such a long beard!' a sharp, strange voice suddenly cried out.

I gave a start, and hastily raised my head, to see a woman of about fifty, with prominent cheekbones and thin lips, standing before me, her hands on her hips, no skirt tied on, her legs planted apart — exactly like a thin-legged compass out of a geometry set.

I was taken aback.

'Don't you recognize me?!』I even used to carry you in my arms!'

I was more taken aback than ever.Luckily my mother came in just then, and put in from the side:

'He's been away for so many years, he's forgotten everything.,』便,『,……You must remember her,' she said, then turned to me, 'this is Mrs. Yang from the house diagonally opposite...。』the one who kept the bean-curd shop.'

Oh, I remembered now.西』。When I was a child, there had indeed sat all day long, in the bean-curd shop diagonally opposite, a Mrs. Yang, whom everyone called 'Bean-curd Beauty.'But she used to powder her face white, and her cheekbones were not so high, nor her lips so thin.姿And since she sat there all day, I had never once seen her in this compass-like pose.People used to say back then that, because of her, the bean-curd shop's business was extremely good. But this was probably owing to my age at the time — I was not in the least affected by her charms, so I had completely forgotten her.彿The Compass, however, took great offense, and with a look of scorn on her face, as though sneering at a Frenchman for not knowing Napoleon, or an American for not knowing Washington, said with a cold laugh:

'Forgotten?。……』Well, high officials really do have short memories...'

……'It's not like that at all...……』I...' I said, flustered, getting to my feet.

'Well then, let me tell you.Brother Xun, you've grown rich, and these things are heavy and awkward to move — what use do you have for these broken-down bits of furniture? Just let me have them.。』We're a poor little household, and they'll come in handy for us.'

'But I haven't grown rich at all.……』I need to sell these things, and then go...

'Oh come now, you've been made a daotai, and you still say you're not rich? You've got three concubines now;便whenever you go out it's in an eight-bearer sedan chair, and you still say you're not rich?。』Hah, you can't hide anything from me.'

I knew there was nothing to say, so I shut my mouth and stood there in silence.

Ah-ya, ah-ya, truly the richer one is, the less one is willing to loosen one's grip even a hair's breadth; and the less one loosens one's grip, the richer one becomes..." Compass-legs, turning around indignantly, muttered on and on as she walked slowly out, and on her way stuffed a pair of my mother's gloves into her waistband, and went out.

After that, relatives and kinsfolk from nearby also came to visit me.便While attending to them, I snatched spare moments to pack up our luggage, and passed three or four days in this way.

One day, on a very cold afternoon, having finished lunch, I was sitting drinking tea when I felt that someone had come in from outside, and turned my head to look. When I looked, I could not help being greatly startled, and hastily rose to my feet and went to meet him.

The one who had come was Runtu.便Although I knew at first glance that it was Runtu, he was no longer the Runtu of my memory. His stature had doubled;his once round, purplish face had turned a sallow gray-yellow, and deep wrinkles had appeared on it besides;his eyes too, like his father's, were swollen red all around the rims — this, I knew, was because those who farm by the seaside, blown all day by the sea wind, are generally like that.On his head was a tattered felt cap, and on his body only a single, very thin padded jacket; he was shivering all over;in his hand he carried a paper parcel and a long pipe, and that hand, too, was no longer the plump, ruddy, sturdy hand I remembered, but was thick and clumsy and cracked, like the bark of a pine tree.

I was very excited just then, but did not know what to say, and could only say:

"Ah!,——?……』Brother Runtu — so you've come?..."

便,……Many words at once welled up in me, wanting to pour out like a string of beads: pheasants, jumping fish, seashells, zha...But I always felt as though something were blocking them. They only whirled about inside my head, and would not come out through my mouth.

He stood still, an expression of joy and desolation appearing on his face;his lips moved, but he made no sound. His manner at last turned respectful, and he called out clearly:

!……』"Master!..."

I seemed to give a shiver;I knew then that a thick, sorrowful wall had already risen up between us.I too could not get out any words.

:『。』便。『。……』He turned his head and said, "Shuisheng, kowtow to the Master." Then he pulled forward the child who had been hiding behind him — this was exactly a Runtu of twenty years ago, only a bit sallower and thinner, and without a silver ring around his neck. "This is my fifth child. He's never seen anything of the world, so he's shy and skittish..."

Mother and Hong'er came downstairs; they had probably heard the voices too.

"Old Mistress.Your letter reached me long ago.……』I was truly happier than I can say, knowing the Master was coming back..." Runtu said.

"Ah, why have you turned so formal all of a sudden.Didn't the two of you used to call each other brothers?。』Just call him as before — Brother Xun." Mother said happily.

……"Ah, Old Mistress, really...That would never do, it wouldn't be proper.……』Back then I was a child and didn't know any better..." As Runtu spoke, he called Shuisheng forward again to make a bow, but the child was shy, and only clung tightly behind his back.

"So this is Shuisheng? The fifth one? They're all strangers to him, so it's no wonder he's afraid of people;。』why don't you take him off to play, Hong'er." Mother said.

Hearing this, Hong'er came over to beckon Shuisheng, and Shuisheng went off with him quite easily and freely.Mother told Runtu to sit; he hesitated a moment, and finally took a seat, leaning his long pipe against the table, and handed over the paper parcel, saying:

There's nothing much to bring in winter.……』These few dried green beans are ones we dried ourselves — please, Master..."

I asked him about his circumstances. He only shook his head.

"Very hard.……Even the sixth child can help out now, but still we never have enough to eat...……And things aren't peaceful either...……Money is wanted everywhere, and there's no fixed rule to it...And the harvests are bad besides.西Whatever we manage to grow, when we carry it off to sell, we always have to pay out several rounds of dues, and end up losing money on it;。……』and if we don't sell it, it can only rot..."

He only shook his head;彿though his face was carved with many wrinkles, it remained utterly still, as though it were a stone statue.便He probably only felt a bitterness he could not put into words; after falling silent for a while, he picked up his pipe and smoked on in silence.

Mother questioned him, and learned that he was busy with matters at home and had to return the next day;便and since he had not yet eaten lunch, she told him to go to the kitchen himself and fry some rice to eat.

He went out;Mother and I both sighed over his circumstances: too many children, famine, harsh taxes, soldiers, bandits, officials, and gentry had all worn him down until he was like a wooden puppet.西Mother told me that anything we did not need to carry away could all be given to him, and he might pick and choose for himself.

In the afternoon, he chose out a few things: two long tables, four chairs, an incense burner with candlesticks, and a carrying-scale.),He also asked for all the straw ash (here we cook our rice by burning straw, and the ash can serve as fertilizer for sandy fields); when the time came for us to set out, he came with a boat to carry it away.

At night, we chatted once more of idle things, none of it anything of consequence;the next morning, he took Shuisheng and went back home.

Nine more days passed, and it was the day fixed for our departure.便Runtu arrived in the morning; Shuisheng did not come with him, but he brought only a five-year-old daughter to mind the boat.We were busy the whole day long, with no time left over for talk.西西There were no few visitors either — some come to see us off, some to fetch things, and some to do both.西By the time we boarded the boat toward evening, everything in the old house, worn or new, great or small, coarse or fine, had already been swept away entirely.

Our boat moved onward, and the green hills along both banks, in the dusk, all took on a deep blackish-blue hue, receding one after another toward the stern.

Hong'er and I leaned against the boat's window, watching together the blurred scenery outside, when he suddenly asked:

"Uncle!?』When will we come back?"

"Come back?。』How is it you're thinking of coming back before you've even gone."

……』"But Shuisheng asked me to come play at his house..." He opened his big black eyes wide, lost in wistful thought.

Mother and I both felt somewhat wistful too, and so we spoke of Runtu once more.西便Mother said: that Tofu Beauty, Mrs. Yang, had come without fail every single day since our household began packing up its things; the day before yesterday, in the ash heap, she had dug out more than a dozen bowls and plates, and after some discussion, declared it certain that Runtu had buried them there, so that he might carry them all off home together when he came for the ash;便),Mrs. Yang, having discovered this feat, took great credit to herself for it, and snatching up the "dog-teaser" (this is a device used here for feeding chickens — a wooden tray with a fence on top, holding feed inside, so that chickens can stretch their necks in to peck, but dogs cannot, and can only watch, fit to die of vexation), ran off as though flying — remarkable, that with such high-heeled bound feet as hers, she could run so fast.

The old house grew ever more distant from me;the hills and streams of my hometown, too, gradually fell away behind me, and yet I felt no great reluctance at leaving them.使I only felt that on every side of me stood invisible high walls, shutting me off into solitude, and this made me feel very stifled;西使the image of that small hero with the silver ring around his neck, standing in the watermelon patch, which had once been so vivid to me, had now suddenly grown blurred, and this too made me very sorrowful.

Mother and Hong'er had both fallen asleep.

I lay there, listening to the murmuring sound of the water beneath the boat, aware that I was going my own way, and I thought: so utterly cut off have I become from Runtu — and yet our children still feel as one; is not Hong'er, even now, thinking of Shuisheng?……I hope that they will not be like me, growing estranged from one another all over again...And yet, I do not wish that, for the sake of remaining as one, they should all live lives of hardship and restless drifting as I have done, nor do I wish them all to live lives of hardship and numbness as Runtu has done, nor do I wish them all to live lives of hardship and reckless self-indulgence as others do.They ought to have a new life, one that we ourselves have never yet lived.

Thinking of hope, I suddenly grew afraid. When Runtu had wanted the incense burner and candlesticks, I had secretly laughed at him, thinking that he still worshipped idols, and could never put them out of his mind, whatever the hour. Now, is not what I call hope also an idol fashioned by my own hands? It is only that his wish is near at hand, while mine is vague and distant, that is all.

In my drowsiness there spread out before my eyes a stretch of jade-green sandy shore beside the sea, above which, in a deep blue sky, hung a round golden moon.I thought: hope cannot be said to exist, nor can it be said not to exist. It is just like the roads across the earth — for truly, the earth had no roads to begin with;便but when many people pass one way, a road comes into being.

What it’s about

The narrator comes back in the cold to the town he grew up in, after twenty years away, to sell the old family house and take his mother north with him. The rooms are being emptied. The neighbour 楊二嫂, once known as the Beancurd Beauty, comes by to take what is not nailed down and to remark on how well he must be doing for himself these days.

Then his mother mentions 閏土, and the story opens onto the most famous image Lu Xun ever wrote: a boy of eleven or twelve with a silver ring round his neck, standing in a seaside melon patch under a round golden moon with a pitchfork in his hands — the friend who told him about badgers and jumping fish and blue-backed birds. The man who actually arrives is grey and cracked, weighed down by six children and the taxes, and greets him as 'master'. The narrator feels a wall he cannot see, and on the boat out decides that hope is like a road on the earth: there was never a road there, but when enough people walk one way, a road is what appears.

When it was written 背景

Published in 新青年 volume 9, number 1, in May 1921, and drawn closely on the journey Lu Xun made in 1919 to sell his family's house in Shaoxing. It is the emotional centre of the collection and the piece whose last lines a Chinese reader is most likely to be able to recite. For a learner it sits comfortably in the middle: longer than 孔乙己, but warm, concrete, mostly past-tense narration, and the two moments it turns on — the melon patch, and the word 老爺 — carry themselves even when you are reading slowly.
