Brothers

The Public Welfare Bureau had, as always, no public business to attend to, and several clerks in the office were, as usual, chatting about household affairs.Qin Yitang, holding his water pipe, coughed until he could hardly breathe, and everyone had no choice but to stop talking.:「After a good while, he raised his face, flushed purple, still gasping for breath, and said, "Just yesterday, they started fighting again, all the way from the main hall to the gate.。」No matter how I shouted at them, I couldn't stop them." His lips, sprouting a few streaks of grizzled beard, were still trembling.

……。」"Old Three says the money Old Five lost on government bonds can't be charged to the family account—he should make it good himself out of his own pocket…"

,」"You see, it's still about money,"

。「?……」Zhang Peijun rose magnanimously from the worn-out lounge chair, his eyes glinting kindly from deep sockets. "I really cannot understand why brothers within the same family need be so calculating over petty sums—isn't it all the same in the end either way?…"

。」"Brothers like the two of you—where would you find such a thing?" said Yitang.

"We simply don't calculate such things; it's the same for both of us.We simply don't let the words 'money' and 'property' weigh on our minds. That way, nothing ever comes of it.Whenever some family is quarreling over dividing their property, I always tell them how things are between my brother and me, and urge them not to calculate so much.……。」You need only give your sons a little guidance too, old Yi…"

--……。」"Ah—that…" Yitang said, shaking his head.

。」,「"I'm afraid that could hardly be managed," said Wang Yuesheng, then looked respectfully into Peijun's eyes. "Brothers like the two of you are truly a rare thing;I have never met the like.……。」Between the two of you there's simply not a trace of selfishness on either side—that's no easy thing…"

……。」"They fought all the way from the main hall to the front gate…" said Yitang.

?……」"Is your younger brother still as busy as ever?…" asked Yuesheng.

"Still eighteen class hours a week, plus ninety-three essays to mark—he simply can't keep up.……。」These past few days he's actually taken leave—running a fever, probably caught a slight chill…"

,」。「……。」"I think that's something to be careful about," said Yuesheng gravely. "Today's paper said that there's a seasonal epidemic going around just now…"

?」"What epidemic?" Peijun asked, startled, hastening to ask.

"That I really couldn't say for certain.。」I believe it was some kind of fever."

Peijun strode off at once and hurried toward the reading room.

,」。「"Truly a rare thing," said Yuesheng, watching him dash off, then remarking admiringly to Qin Yitang. "The two of them are just like one person. If all brothers were like that, how could there ever be trouble in a household.……。」I could never learn to be like that…"

……。」"They say the money lost on government bonds can't be charged to the family account…" Yitang said bitterly, jabbing his paper spill into the spill-holder.

The momentary stillness in the office was soon shattered by the sound of Peijun's footsteps and his calling for the attendant.仿He seemed as though some great calamity were already upon him; his speech had grown somewhat stammering, and his voice was trembling too.He told the attendant to telephone Dr. Pratt and ask him to come at once to Zhang Peijun's rooms at the Tongxing Lodgings to see a patient.便西Yuesheng could tell at once how anxious he was, for he had always known that although Peijun believed in Western medicine, his income was small and he was ordinarily frugal—yet now he was calling in the most famous and expensive doctor in the city.So he went out to meet him, and found him standing outside, his face pale, listening to the attendant make the call.

?」"What's happened?"

……"The paper says………It says what's going around is scar…Scarlet fever. I—I—when I came to the bureau this afternoon, Jingfu's whole face was flushed red already…Has he already gone out?……Please………。」Please have them telephone to find him, ask him to come at once—Tongxing Lodgings, Tongxing Lodgings…"

As soon as he heard the attendant finish the call, he rushed into the office and snatched up his hat.Wang Yuesheng, anxious on his behalf too, followed him in.

……。」"When the director comes, please ask leave for me—say there's someone sick at home, and I've gone to fetch the doctor…" he said, nodding his head distractedly.

"Just go.。」The director may not even come today," said Yuesheng.

But he seemed not to have heard, and had already dashed out.

便,「Once out on the road, he no longer haggled over the fare as he usually did; the moment he spotted a somewhat sturdy-looking rickshaw puller who seemed able to run, he asked the price, then stepped straight up into the rickshaw and said, "All right.!」Just get me there fast!"

The lodging house, however, was just as usual, perfectly peaceful and quiet;a young errand-boy still sat outside the gate playing the huqin. He walked into his brother's bedroom, and felt his heart pound even harder, for Jingfu's face seemed even redder now, and he was breathing hard besides. He reached out and touched his forehead, and it was burning hot to the touch.

"I don't know what illness it is.?」It's not serious, is it?" Jingfu asked, a look of worried doubt in his eyes, plainly a sign that he himself sensed something was not right.

,……"It's nothing serious, …。」just a cold, that's all," he answered evasively.

He was ordinarily one who loved to debunk superstition, yet just now he felt there was something ominous in both Jingfu's look and his words, as though the patient himself had some premonition.使使This thought unsettled him all the more, and he went straight out and quietly called the errand-boy, telling him to telephone the hospital and ask: had Dr. Pratt been found yet?

"Just a moment, just a moment.。」Not found yet," the boy said into the telephone.

By now Peijun could not only not sit still, he could not even stand still;but in his anxiety a way out suddenly occurred to him: perhaps it was not scarlet fever after all.,……And yet Dr. Pratt could not be found, ………。Bai Wenshan, who lodged in the same house, was a practitioner of Chinese medicine, and might well be able to determine the name of the illness—but Peijun had, on several occasions, spoken to him in terms attacking Chinese medicine; besides, Bai might already have overheard the telephone calls chasing after Dr. Pratt…

Yet in the end he went to fetch Bai Wenshan all the same.

Bai Wenshan, however, did not seem to mind in the least; he at once put on his tortoiseshell-rimmed dark glasses and came along with him to Jingfu's room.便He took the pulse, studied Jingfu's face for a while, then opened his clothing and examined his chest, after which he took his leave in a leisurely, unhurried manner.Peijun followed close behind, all the way to Bai's own room.

Bai asked Peijun to sit down, but said nothing.

……?」"Brother Wenshan, what exactly is wrong with my younger brother…?" he could not help asking.

"Red-spot sha fever.。」You see, the spots have already 'come out.'"

?」"Then it's not scarlet fever?" Peijun brightened somewhat.

What the Western doctors call scarlet fever, we in Chinese medicine call red-spot sha fever."

This at once made his hands and feet turn cold.

?」"Can it be cured?" he asked miserably.

"It can.。」But that will also depend on your household's fortune."

By now he was so muddled that he himself did not know quite how he came to have Bai Wenshan write out a prescription, and walked out of his room;but as he passed by the telephone, he remembered Dr. Pratt again. He telephoned the hospital once more to ask, and was told that the doctor had been found, but that he was very busy and might well be late—it might not be possible until tomorrow morning.Even so, Peijun insisted that the doctor absolutely must come today.

He went into the room and lit the lamp to look, and found that Jingfu's face seemed even redder now, with brighter red spots plainly showing, and his eyelids had begun to swell as well.He sat there, and yet it was as though he sat on a cushion of needles;使as the night grew ever more still, and in his eager watching, the wail of every motorcar's horn reached his ears all the more clearly, and sometimes, for no reason at all, he took it for Dr. Pratt's car and leapt up to go and meet it.But before he had even reached the doorway, the car had already driven past;西便dazed, he would turn back, and passing through the courtyard, see that the bright moon had already climbed westward, and an old locust tree in the neighboring yard cast its shadow on the ground, its somber denseness deepening still further the gloom that lay upon his heart.

Suddenly a crow cawed. This was something he often heard on ordinary days;there were three or four crows' nests in that old locust tree. But now it startled him so that he nearly stopped in his tracks; his heart pounding, he crept quietly into Jingfu's room, and saw him lying there with his eyes closed, his whole face seemingly swollen;yet he was not asleep—having apparently heard the footsteps, he suddenly opened his eyes, and those two beams of gaze flashed strangely, mournfully, in the lamplight.

?」"Any news?" Jingfu asked.

"No, no.。」,「It's me." He was startled, somewhat flustered, and stammered, "It's me.西I think I'd better still go and fetch a Western doctor—you'll get well faster that way.……。」He still hasn't come…"

Jingfu made no reply, and closed his eyes.He sat by the desk near the window; everything was still, and all that could be heard was the patient's hurried breathing and the ticking of the alarm clock.使Suddenly, far off, a motorcar's horn sounded, and at once his heart tensed; he listened as it drew nearer and nearer—it must be just at the gate now, about to stop, surely—but the next instant he could tell it had driven straight past.……。After this happened many times over, he came to know all the varieties of that horn's sound: some like a whistle blowing, some like a drum being struck, some like flatulence, some like a dog barking, some like a duck quacking, some like an ox bellowing, some like a startled hen shrieking, some like a low sobbing…He suddenly grew angry at himself: why had he not thought earlier to take note of just what Dr. Pratt's own car-horn sounded like?

The lodger across the way had still not come home—as usual, he must have gone to the theater, or off to some teahouse gathering. But the night had already grown very deep, and even the motorcars were gradually growing fewer. The strong, silvery-white moonlight shone upon the paper window, turning it pale.

Worn out with waiting, the tension in his body and mind gradually slackened, until he no longer troubled to listen for those horns at all.But his tangled thoughts seized the chance to rise up instead;仿he felt, as though he already knew for certain, that what Jingfu had must be scarlet fever, and that it was beyond saving. In that case, how was the family to be supported—by himself alone?……。Even living in a small town as they did, the price of everything had been rising too…His own three children, and his brother's two—it was already hard enough just to feed them; how could they possibly go to school as well?,——……。And if only one or two could be sent to school, then naturally it would be his own son Kang'er, the cleverest of them—yet everyone would surely criticize him, say he had treated his brother's children shabbily…"

……。As for funeral arrangements, there would not even be enough money to buy a coffin, let alone to transport it back home—it would have to be left temporarily at the charitable mortuary…

Suddenly, far off, footsteps came sounding nearer, and at once he sprang up and went out of the room—only to find it was the lodger from across the way.

……。」"The Former Emperor, at Baidi Castle…"

The moment he heard this soft, cheerful crooning, he was overcome with disappointment and fury, and very nearly rushed up to curse the man to his face. But then he saw the errand-boy carrying a storm-lantern, its light picking out a pair of leather shoes following behind, and, dimly lit above them, a tall man with a pale face and a black, full beard. This was indeed Pu Tisi.

As if he had gotten hold of a treasure, he dashed up and led him into the patient's room. The two of them stood in front of the bed; he held up the foreign lamp, lighting the way.

……。」"Doctor, he has a fever..." Peijun said, panting.

?」"When did it start?" Pu Tisi asked slowly, his hands thrust into his trouser pockets, staring fixedly at the patient's face.

"The day before yesterday.……No, the...。」the day before the day before yesterday."

Doctor Pu said nothing, felt the pulse briefly, then had Peijun raise the lamp higher and studied the patient's face closely for a while by its light;then had the bedding pulled back and the clothing undone so he could examine him.Having looked him over, he reached out a finger and pressed it once against his stomach.

「Measles……」"Measles..." Pu Tisi said in a low voice, as though talking to himself.

「Measles……」

?」"Measles?" he said, so startled and delighted that his voice seemed to tremble.

。」"Measles."

?……」"It's really measles?..."

。」"Measles."

?……」"So you've never had measles before?..."

Just as he was happily asking Jingfu this, Doctor Pu had already walked over to the desk, so he had no choice but to follow. He saw him plant one foot on a chair, pull over a sheet of letter paper from the desk, take out a very short stub of pencil from his pocket, and scratch out a few barely legible characters on the paper right there — this was the prescription.

?」"I'm afraid the pharmacy may already be closed?" Peijun asked, taking the prescription.

"It's fine tomorrow.。」Take it tomorrow."

?……」"Should you come see him again tomorrow?..."

"No need to see him again.Nothing sour, spicy, or too salty.退便Once the fever goes down, take a urine sample and bring it to my hospital for testing, that's all.Put it in a clean glass bottle;。」and write his name on the outside."

Doctor Pu talked as he walked, taking a five-dollar note and stuffing it into his pocket, and went straight out.gögöHe saw him out, watched him get into the car and drive off, and then turned back; just as he stepped through the shop door, he heard two "gögö" sounds behind him, and only then realized that the horn of Pu Tisi's car sounded just like the bellow of an ox.But knowing it now was of no use, he thought.

Inside the house, even the lamplight seemed cheerful;仿Peijun felt as though everything had been settled and all around him was peaceful, yet his heart felt strangely empty and hollow. He handed the money and the prescription to the shop assistant who had come in with him, telling him to go to the Meiya Pharmacy first thing tomorrow morning to buy the medicine, because that was the pharmacy Doctor Pu had specified, saying that only that one shop's medicines were reliable.

"The Meiya Pharmacy in the East City! You must go there without fail.!」Remember: Meiya Pharmacy!" he said, following the departing assistant out.

滿;「The courtyard was filled with moonlight, white as silver; the neighbor who sang "At Baidi City" had already gone to sleep, and everything was very quiet.Only the alarm clock on the desk ticked away cheerfully and evenly;調though the patient's breathing could be heard, it was quite regular. Not long after he sat down, he suddenly grew cheerful again.

?」"So you're already this old, and you've still never had measles?" he asked in astonishment, as though he had come across some miracle.

「…………」"............"

"You wouldn't remember it yourself.。」You'd have to ask Mother to know."

「…………」"............"

"And Mother isn't here.To think you've never had measles.!」Ha ha ha!"

When Peijun woke up in bed, the morning sun was already shining in through the paper window, stinging his bleary eyes.滿But he could not move at once; he felt his limbs were weak, his back was cold and covered in sweat, and he saw a child standing in front of the bed with a face streaming with blood, while he himself was just about to strike her.

But this scene vanished in an instant; he was still lying alone in his own room, with no one else there.穿He untied the pillowcase to wipe the cold sweat from his chest and back, got dressed, and as he walked toward Jingfu's room, he saw the "At Baidi City" neighbor rinsing his mouth in the courtyard, which showed that it was already quite late in the morning.

Jingfu was awake too, lying in bed with his eyes wide open.

?」"How are you feeling today?" he asked at once.

……。」"Better..."

?」"Hasn't the medicine come yet?"

。」"No."

便He then sat down beside the desk, facing the bed directly;Jingfu's face, he saw, was no longer as flushed red as it had been yesterday. But his own head still felt dazed, and fragments of his dream at the same time flickered up before him:

——— Jingfu was lying just like this, but he was a corpse. He busied himself with the funeral preparations, carrying a coffin alone on his back, straight from outside the main gate into the main hall. The place seemed to be his home, and he saw many familiar people standing by, praising him in chorus...

——— He ordered Kang'er and his two younger siblings off to school;but there were still two children crying and clamoring to go along. He was already vexed, worn down by their crying and shouting, but at the same time he felt that he himself possessed supreme authority and immense power.……。He saw that his own palm had grown three or four times its normal size, like cast iron, and he swung it in a slap across Hesheng's face...

Assailed by these traces of the dream, he was frightened enough to want to stand up and walk out of the room, but in the end he did not move.He also tried to press down these traces of the dream and forget them, but they were like goose down stirred into water — after turning around a few times, they were bound to float back up to the surface:

——滿— Hesheng, her face covered in blood, came in crying.……。He leapt up onto the shrine platform...Behind the child followed a crowd of people, some familiar and some strangers.……。He knew they had all come to attack him...

——「— "I would never go against my conscience.……。」Don't be deceived by the child's lies..." he heard himself say.

——……。— Hesheng was right beside him, and he raised his palm again...

He suddenly came awake, feeling very exhausted, his back still seeming somewhat cold.調Jingfu lay quietly across from him; though his breathing was rapid, it was quite even. The alarm clock on the desk seemed to be ticking even more loudly now.

He turned his body toward the desk and saw it was covered in a layer of dust; turning his face to look at the paper window, he saw the calendar hanging there, with two characters written in jet-black clerical script: Twenty-seven.

The shop assistant brought the medicine in, also carrying a parcel of books.

?」"What is it?" Jingfu asked, opening his eyes.

。」"The medicine," he answered, also rousing himself from his daze.

。」"No, that parcel."

"Never mind that for now.。」,「Take your medicine first." He gave Jingfu the medicine, and only then picked up the parcel of books to look at it, saying, "It's from Suoshi.:《Sesame and Lilies》。」It must be the one you borrowed from him: Sesame and Lilies."

Jingfu reached out for the book, but after just glancing at the cover and running his fingers over the gold letters on the spine, he set it down beside his pillow and silently closed his eyes. After a while, he said cheerfully, in a low voice:

……。」"Once I'm well again, I'll translate a bit of it and send it to the Wenhua Bookstore to sell for a little money — I wonder if they'd want it..."

That day, Peijun arrived at the Public Welfare Bureau much later than usual — it was almost afternoon;滿the office was already filled with the smoke from Qin Yitang's water pipe.便Wang Yuesheng caught sight of him from a distance and came out to greet him.

"Ha!So you've come.Your younger brother's fully recovered, I take it?I thought it was nothing serious;seasonal illnesses come every year, nothing to worry about.Old Yi and I were just thinking of you;we both said, why hasn't he come yet?Now you're here, good!……。But, look, your complexion, it's somewhat...。」Yes, it's somewhat different from yesterday."

Peijun too felt as though the office and his colleagues seemed somehow different from yesterday, oddly unfamiliar.西……。Even though everything was still what he was used to seeing: the broken coat hook, the chipped spittoon, the disorderly dust-covered files, the broken reclining chair with a missing leg, and Qin Yitang sitting in it, cradling his water pipe, coughing and shaking his head with sighs...

……。」"They just went on fighting from the main hall all the way to the front gate..."

,」,「"That's just it," Yuesheng answered him, "I keep saying you should tell them about Brother Pei here, and have them learn from him.……。」Otherwise, you're really going to be angered to death, old man..."

……"Third Brother says the money Fifth Brother lost on the government bonds can't be counted as family funds, it should...……。」it should—" Yitang coughed so hard he bent double.

Truly, 'no two hearts are alike'..." Yuesheng said, then turned to Peijun, "So, your brother is all right?"

"Nothing serious.。」The doctor says it's measles."

"Measles?Ah yes, children outside are having a bout of measles these days. The three children living in my compound have all had it too. It's nothing to worry about at all.’。」But look at you, you were so worried about it yesterday that anyone watching couldn't help but be moved — this is truly what's called 'brothers in harmony.'"

?」"Did the Director come to the bureau yesterday?"

’。Still "vanished like the yellow crane" — no word of him at all. Just go and pencil in an "attended" in the register book.

。」。「"They say he ought to pay for it out of his own pocket," Yitang muttered to himself. "These government bonds are truly the ruin of people — I don't understand the first thing about them."The moment you lay a hand on them, you're cheated.By yesterday, by evening, they were still at it, fighting all the way from the main hall to the front gate.……。」Lao San has two more children in school now, and Lao Wu says he's used more than his share of the public funds too, and got so worked up over it he couldn't contain himself..."

!」。「’。"This just gets more and more impossible to untangle!" Yuesheng said, sounding almost disappointed. "That's exactly why, when I see you and your brother, Pei-jun, I truly 'prostrate myself in admiration.'"。」Yes, I dare say, this is by no means flattery to your face."

Pei-jun said nothing; seeing the office attendant bring in an official document, he stepped forward and took it in hand.Yuesheng went over too, and reading it right there over his hand, recited aloud:

「‘’。"'Petition from citizen Hao Shangshan and others: an unidentified male corpse has been found dead in the eastern suburbs; may the branch bureau be instructed to promptly provide a coffin and have it carried off for burial, for the sake of public health and the public good.'I'll handle it.You'd better go on home now — you must be worried about your brother's illness.’……。」You two truly are like 'wagtails stranded on the plain'..."

!」,「。」"No!" He would not let go of it. "I'll handle it."

So Yuesheng gave up trying to snatch it away from him.便Pei-jun then, looking quite at ease, walked calmly to his own desk, gazing at the petition, while reaching out to lift the lid of his ink box, mottled green with rust.

What it’s about

At the 公益局, which never has any public business to transact, 秦益堂's sons have been brawling from the hall to the front gate over money one of them lost on government bonds, and 張沛君 is held up by the whole office as the model brother: he and 靖甫 keep no accounts between them at all — 他們兩個人就像一個人. Then 汪月生 mentions an epidemic in the paper, 沛君 remembers his brother's face was flushed at noon, and the rest of the day and half the night is pure terror. The expensive foreign doctor 普悌思 cannot be located; the Chinese doctor 白問山 diagnoses 紅斑痧, adds that whether it can be cured depends on the family's luck, and leaves; every car horn in the street is not the one he is waiting for.

While he waits, 沛君 works out, without meaning to, exactly what would follow: that he could not keep five children at school, that his own 康兒 is the cleverest, that people would say he had short-changed his brother's children, that there is not even enough for a coffin. 普悌思 finally arrives, looks, presses the belly and says: measles. The relief is enormous — and that night 沛君 dreams that he is carrying his brother's coffin in alone while acquaintances praise him, that he has sent his own children to school and left the others screaming, and that his hand, three times its usual size and cast in iron, is coming down on his nephew 荷生's bleeding face. In the morning he is congratulated at the office on his 兄弟怡怡, hears about 秦益堂's sons again, and takes a routine document about an unclaimed corpse out of a colleague's hands: no, I'll deal with it.

When it was written 背景

Dated 3 November 1925 and first printed in 彷徨 itself. It works over something Lu Xun had lived: in 1917 周作人 fell ill in Beijing and he went through this same fright, and by 1925 the two brothers had been irrevocably estranged for two years. It is the most straightforward piece in the collection to read — office banter, a sickroom, a dream, one day and one night, a small cast, and a lot of repeated speech that drills itself in. A learner can take it early, and probably should, because it shows how much Lu Xun gets out of a story in which nothing that looks like an event ever occurs.
