If you unfold a map of Japan and look, to the southeast of Dongjing Bay you can see a gourd-shaped peninsula, floating in the vast, boundless Pacific Ocean. This is the famous Anfang Peninsula!

Although the Anfang Peninsula does not have the brilliant, sunlit scenery of the boot-shaped island in the Mediterranean, still its layered sea waves, azure sky, gentle air, softly rolling low hills, fishing nets along the coast, and the villagers who dwell there all possess much of the character of a southern European shore, enough to make a traveler forget that he is in a foreign land. If put into English, it would be "a hospitable, inviting dream-land of the romantic age" (a dreamland of the medieval romantic era, of simple rustic customs and beautiful mountains and waters).

Its southeastern slope runs along the Pacific, forming from Chaozi to Dayuan a crescent curve, which may be taken as the narrow lower part of the gourd. Chaozi is a point on the largest circumference of the gourd's lower section, and Dayuan a point on the circumference of the gourd's second, swelling section. The tip of the gourd bends straight westward,就成了一個大半島裡邊的小半島,地名西岬村。forming a small peninsula within the great peninsula, a place called Xijia Village. The tip of Xijia Village is Zhouqi, its western edge lying between the Pacific and Dongjing Bay — east of Zhouqi is the Pacific, north of Zhouqi is Dongjing Bay. the inhabitants of the Anfang Peninsula generally take it as a dividing line, calling the stretch east of Zhouqi along the Pacific "Waifang," and the stretch north of Zhouqi along Dongjing Bay "Neifang." As it happens, the inhabitants of the peninsula commonly call the whole peninsula "Fangzhou," so "Neifang" and "Waifang" are simply short for "Neifangzhou" and "Waifangzhou." The base of the gourd-shaped Fangzhou Peninsula connects to Dongjing, so nowadays a train setting out from Liangguoqiao Station in Dongjing can go straight to Guanshan on the Neifang side, and to Shengpu on the Waifang side.

One afternoon in early February, in the spring of 1920, in an upstairs private room facing the park at the Jingyangxuan restaurant in Shangye, Dongjing, two men from foreign lands sat having tea and cakes. One was a Westerner of about fifty, already balding at the crown. His skin was a light dusky color, and to either side of his high, hawk-like nose, his two eyes sat deep-sunk in his flesh, giving off a dull, tenacious light. The yellowish-black color of his irises was probably proof of his mixed lineage — perhaps there was Gypsy blood mingled in his five-foot-five-inch frame, or perhaps Oriental blood, but the mother who bore him was, without doubt, a beautiful Irish woman. He wore a half-worn suit of grayish-black serge, with a round collar, beneath which was attached a small black close-fitting garment, evidently serving in place of a waistcoat. The other was a young man of twenty-four or twenty-five, also some five feet five inches tall; one could tell at a glance that he was Chinese, for his thin, gaunt face and slender frame were not to be found among the Japanese. He wore a suit of indigo-blue serge, a university uniform; his hair, over an inch long, stood bristling upright above his short face, casting a look of melancholy over his countenance. He sat facing the Westerner across a small table; his left hand and the Westerner's right hand both rested near the glass window that looked onto the park. They spoke in English, their voices low, carrying a certain melancholy echo, which made an interesting contrast with the afternoon sunlight outside the window and the boundless spring sky above their heads. If we translate the gist of what they said, it comes to this:
Your color has looked worse lately — I advise you to go get a change of air, go to the countryside and rest quietly for a few weeks." — the Westerner.
“臉色不好麼?"Does my color look bad? Going elsewhere to convalesce would certainly be good, but first, I'm too lazy to move about, and second, it would be lonely going to the countryside alone — so even though it is bitterly cold, I have no wish to go anywhere outside Dongjing." — the young man.
At this point, a gust of wind carrying sand and grit blew past outside the window; the glass rattled once, gave a sound, and the wind passed on.
Have you ever been to Fangzhou?" — the Westerner.
I have not." — the young man.
“那一個地方才好呢!"Now there's a fine place! It's a peninsula jutting out into the Pacific, warmed by the Pacific's warm current — the air in Waifang is exceedingly mild, some ten degrees warmer than in Dongjing. At this very time of year, if you went and looked along the Pacific shore, you might still find women stripped bare, leaping into the sea to catch fish! A whole stretch of mountain villages and waterside towns, the scenery is very fine too — don't you love the pastoral scenery of our England? You should go up to Fangzhou, that's the thing."

Have you been there?"
I go often. I have a lady friend who lives in Fangzhou — she's English too. Her husband died, and she lives alone by the sea. Her house is very spacious, built amid a grove of trees on the sandy shore;她又是一個熱心的基督教徒,你若要去,我可以替你介紹的,她非常歡喜中國人,因為她和她的男人從前也在中國做過醫生的。”she is also a devout Christian — if you'd like to go, I can introduce you to her. She's exceedingly fond of Chinese people, because she and her husband used to practice medicine in China."

In that case, please do introduce me — I'll go out on a trip once, and perhaps, who knows, the course of my life might be able to change."
There was a good deal of other idle talk besides, which need not be mentioned here.

When four o'clock came, a clock outside the window struck. The young man pressed the electric bell, called the waiter in, and handed him a five-yuan note.青年站起來要走的時候看看那西洋人還兀的不動,青年便催說:“我們去吧!”When the young man rose to leave and saw that the Westerner still sat there unmoving, he urged him, saying, "Let's go!"

The Westerner opened his eyes wide and asked him:
What about the change?"
It wasn't much extra — I just gave it to the waiter as a tip."
Tea and cakes surely can't come to five dollars.你把找頭拿來捐在教會的傳道捐裡多好啊!”Wouldn't it be better if you took the change and put it in the church's mission collection!"
Never mind, never mind, the extra was only a dollar or so."
The Westerner still would not budge; the young man walked out of the room alone, while the Westerner, still murmuring softly to himself, seeing the young man had gone, could only follow him out the door, down the stairs, and up to the front entrance. When they took their overcoats and hats at the entrance and stepped outside, the pale shadow of the waning winter sun had already sunk to the western horizon, and all the houses of the city lay submerged in the light of dusk.
Night, moment by moment, spread wide her wings; the Westerner and the young man walked slowly for a while before the great Buddha in the park, and, near and far, the houses of the people lit their electric lamps one after another. Looking out in all directions from the high terrace of Shangye Park, one saw only the lamps of the houses, high and low, like fireflies in a gauze bag, casting their strange brightness amid the evening haze. From afar the wind came, carrying with it the clamor of the marketplace. Only when the sound of the tram wheels drew near their ears did the two of them realize it was now time to go home. Walking hurriedly, they soon reached the tram stop on the avenue in front of the park; just then a tram bound west came along, and the two of them, with all their strength, squeezed aboard, for it was the hour when the factories let out work, and the laborers were all riding the tram back to their small dwellings, so that the car was packed unbearably full.
The young man was squeezed toward the back of the tram, so tightly that he could scarcely draw breath. As the tram started, the bell of Shangye striking the hour rang out again. Hearing this plaintive, mournful bell of the dusk, his thoughts suddenly sank into gloom:
These poor machines of flesh and blood — perhaps they too have wives and children at home. Their children, who go cold and hungry, what crime have they committed, that from the moment they are born onto this earth they must, together with their parents, endure this world's torments! Perhaps at the doorway of some pigsty-like slum, there are children as famished as hungry ghosts, waiting there for their fathers to come home. These children, famished like stray dogs, once they reach eight or nine years of age, must go and become little machines themselves. Growing up bit by bit, becoming workers, they too, like their fathers and grandfathers and great-grandfathers before them, must give their own blood to make up for what the iron-and-wood machines lack. Having tasted every hardship and bitterness, from childhood to age, from birth to death, their lives never change in the least — ah, what pleasure, after all, is there in this human life? Laborers, oh laborers, why must you insist on living on in this world? This is all the fault of those in power — hateful, these men of power, hateful, this class that holds power — they truly ought to be cut off root and branch, wiped out entirely, and only then would it be well."

Having thought this far, he began to mock himself:

Ha, so you too have been infected by Japanese socialism. If you want to save the laborers of Japan, why not first go save your own countrymen? Under the rule of the militarists and bureaucrats, is the suffering your countrymen endure really any lighter than that of Japan's laborers? Japan's laborers, though they have no property, at least their lives are secure. Your countrymen, the farmers back home, if they fall even slightly behind in paying taxes and grain levies, cannot escape being savagely slaughtered by the military. Men who were bandits in the old days and are army officers now, when they come and go from the capital, if some country person, not knowing better, happens to cross the place where their special train is stopped, cannot escape being hacked to death with spears and swords. When the armored cars of some bandit warlord run over and kill common people in the street, they still say it is the people's own fault, and even make the family of the dead pay compensation and be punished besides. If a wife or daughter of your countrymen happens to be beautiful, she cannot escape being violated by the military. When Japan's laborers go home at day's end, perhaps they have a wife and daughter waiting to comfort them, and then the day's bitterness can be forgotten — but what of your own countrymen? Never mind whether she is your own lawfully wedded wife — if some army commander, division commander, committee chairman, county magistrate, or the like wants her as his eighth or ninth concubine, can you refuse?有訴訟事件的時候,你若送裁判官的錢,送了比你的對爭者少一點,或是在上級衙門裡沒有一個親戚朋友,雖然受了冤屈,你難道能分訴得明白麼?……”When there is a lawsuit, if the money you send the judge is even a little less than what your opponent sends, or if you have no relative or friend in the higher offices, then even though you suffer a grave injustice, can you ever hope to plead your case clearly? ..."

By the time his thoughts had come this far, the young man's eyes had grown moist and weak; had he not been pressed in among this crowd of laborers, his feelings might well have gotten the better of him — just then the tram reached Benxiang Sandingmu, and, pushing and yielding his way, he got off along with a few of the laborers. Standing outside the tram on the great road in the dusk, he searched about for a while before he spotted the Westerner's bald head, his back turned to him, sitting on a seat in the middle of the tram. He walked up to the middle of the tram, stood on tiptoe, and knocked several times on the glass window from outside; only then did the bald Westerner turn his head around, and seeing him standing there in the cool evening wind outside the car, the Westerner lowered the window from inside and said:

Before he had finished speaking, the tram had already started off.
At half past two in the afternoon of February 23rd, the fourth train of the day from Dongjing arrived at Beitiao Station on the Fangzhou Peninsula. This small country train station suddenly grew lively for a moment. There were not many passengers; after a scattered handful of them had passed out through the ticket gate, the station once more grew cold and quiet. A hired carriage waiting in front of the station took on a few of the passengers who had gotten off, left behind a few mournful, forlorn notes of its horn in the clear afternoon air, and, stirring up a cloud of dust, set off westward, facing the sun, along the natural dirt road of the countryside.

Left standing blankly on the platform was only one thin, gaunt young man — the very university student who, three weeks before, had sat having tea and cakes with a Western missionary at the Jingyangxuan in Shangye, Dongjing. He was a descendant of Yi Yin — if you were to open the register of Dongjing Imperial University and look, in the roll of students of the Faculty of Letters, the very first name you would find, together with his native place, would be his:

Yiren, a student from China, enrolled in the eighth year of Taisho.
Ever since Yiren had come to Japan at eighteen, he had never once, up to last summer, gone back to his own country. In his whole family, only his grandmother loved him. As for Yiren's mother, because his father had died so early, she had turned into a person of a half-male, half-female temperament, and from his childhood she had never known how to love him — so that he had gradually turned into a man weary of the world and given to melancholy. After he came to Japan, his temperament grew stranger and stranger still; all year round, in every season, he never associated with anyone, but sat alone in silence in his lodgings, sunk in brooding thought. B.V.What he read were always the books of men who had been defeated on the battlefield of life, and so the ones he most revered and loved were the man known by the short name B.V. —的James Thomson,H.Heine, Leopardi, Ernest Dowson那些人。that is, James Thomson, along with H. Heine, Leopardi, and Ernest Dowson. Getting off the train, he went to the baggage room and fetched a canvas bag; what it held inside, no doubt, were the collected poems and prose, the biographies, and the like, of these very gentlemen. Because he had, last summer, been deceived by a Japanese woman, both his spirit and his body had become like those of a drenched, drowned chicken. When he woke from sleep at night, cold sweat would break out over his body each time; his appetite failed him, and of late there were even days when he ate nothing at all. For fear of running into that same woman again, he had even given up his after-lunch and after-dinner walks. Day by day his body grew thinner and weaker, and day by day the color of his face changed as well. The road to Fangzhou ran between level fields, where a small railway had been cut through; on either side of the line, if it was not sea on one side and mountain on the other, then it was withered trees on one side and wasteland on the other. For a nerve-worn young man who, amid the soft red dust of Dongjing, had been disappointed and grieved to the very extreme, the moment he drew in this breath of country air, a certain pleasurable feeling arose in him. Yiren's very first impression on arriving in Fangzhou was, naturally, one of feeling exceedingly light and easy. After Yiren got off the train, he looked at the pine groves all around, the blue sky with its few wisps of thin cloud drifting across, the sunlight floating over the broad open ground, and the few simple, unadorned merchants sitting quietly and coolly behind their counters in the shops in front of the station, and it seemed to him that he himself had arrived in some eighteenth-century countryside.亞力山大·斯密司著的《村落的文章》裡的Dreamthorp(By Alexander Smith)好像是被移到了這東海的小島上的東南角上來了。It was as though the Dreamthorp of Alexander Smith's Dreamthorp — from his book of village essays — had been transplanted here, to this southeastern corner of a small island in the Eastern Sea.
亚力山大·斯密司著的《村落的文章》里的Dreamthorp(By Alexander Smith)好像是被移到了这东海的小岛上的东南角上来了。
Yiren took up his luggage and asked:
Is there a Western lady living around here — do you know her?"
The men in the baggage room all said:
“是C夫人麼?"You mean Mrs. C? Everyone around here knows her — you need only tell the rickshaw puller her name, and that will do."
Holding his one canvas bag, Yiren sat in a rickshaw, and as it swayed unsteadily along in the shadow of the withered trees toward Mrs. C's house, a certain doubt rose again in his heart:
I wonder just what sort of person Mrs. C really is — whether she might, like a certain Mrs. E, be terribly frugal and stingy as well."
Poor fellow — mistreated by society since his childhood, even now, he still dared not believe that there existed in this dusty world a single good person. And so, whenever he met someone, he never forgot to be on his guard, for the world had deceived him far too much. After winding along a rustic country road for thirty minutes, the roof of a Western-style wooden house emerged from among the trees. The driver pointed to that corner of the roof and said:

When the carriage drew near the Western-style house, he saw a low ring of shrubs growing around its garden. Though their tops had been unevenly trimmed, this hedge was, after all, more elegant than iron railings or tiled walls, and it brought back to him the old home of Shakespeare at Stratford-upon-Avon, which he had seen in Western pictures as a child. He opened a delicate little gate made of several wooden rods and entered the garden surrounding the house, where patches of evergreen grass, their color altered, lay in the feeble afternoon sunlight. Just to the right of the little gate was an old well, with two well buckets hanging at different heights from the wooden frame above it. From the entrance, a stone-paved path led straight ahead; beyond another short bamboo fence stood Mrs. C’s residence. As he felt it improper to go directly into her quarters, he told the driver to take a letter of introduction from a certain E and deliver it at the kitchen door. To reach the kitchen door, one had to branch off the main stone path and walk a few steps to the right; it was also visible from the gateway enclosed by the hedge. The garden, the well frame, and the red wooden walls of the Western-style house were all washed in a layer of pale, feeble afternoon sunlight. All around was empty and still, with not a living creature in sight save several half-grown hens and cockerels, standing stupidly beside the well and staring in alarm at him and his driver.
The driver called for a long time at the kitchen door, but no one came out. Standing at the wooden gate outside the garden, he heard the driver’s calls echo through the silent air and thought them exceedingly loud. After waiting about five minutes, he suddenly heard footsteps behind him. Turning around, he saw a Japanese woman of about fifty approaching him, her hair disheveled and her eyes red. On seeing him, she bowed and said:
“你是東京來的伊先生麼?“Are you Mr. Yi from Tokyo? Our mistress has been waiting here every day for you to come! Please wait a moment; I shall go and ask her to come out.”
Having said this, she slowly edged past him, then hurried to the kitchen door. The driver standing there handed her the letter of introduction he had brought. She hurried inside. Before long, she emerged from beyond the bamboo fence with a Western woman of fifty-five or fifty-six. He hastened forward and shook hands with the Western woman, whereupon she invited him into her quarters, while instructing the Japanese woman:

She talked with him as she prepared black tea. After they had talked for thirty minutes and finished their tea, he went to a small room upstairs to put his luggage in order. When he was halfway through unpacking, the Japanese woman came upstairs and said to him:
It is time for prayers now! Please come downstairs to the prayer room.”
He went down to the prayer room and found two Japanese male students and three female students already there. After Mrs. C had introduced him, she said:
“Every day, from three to four in the afternoon, we gather together to sing hymns and pray. At prayer time we ring that bell as a signal.” (As she spoke, she pointed toward the eaves.) “Today I was away from home, so we are two hours late and did not ring it.”
He glanced around. The first male student had very long hair, falling over his forehead like a lion’s mane, and wore a pair of very strong wire-rimmed spectacles. A ring of very black whiskers grew above his lips, and he appeared to be about twenty-six or twenty-seven. The second male student was a young man of around twenty. He too wore a pair of plain silver-rimmed spectacles and had a round, swarthy, coarse-featured face with upturned lips. Both men wore blue-patterned Japanese everyday robes, so one could tell at a glance that they were students. He did not feel free to scrutinize the female students, and so merely stole a few glances at the sixteen- or seventeen-year-old sitting opposite him. From that momentary inspection, he judged her the best-looking of the three, for all three had quite ordinary faces and, strictly speaking, fell short of the average. Only this girl had a pair of dimples in her long face, which gave her considerable charm when she smiled. They read a passage from the Bible, sang two hymns, and prayed; then the gathering dispersed. He asked the two male students:

“Yes, we live just behind here.”
The younger student smiled at him and said:
“You speak Japanese extremely well. At first we thought you could speak only English and not Japanese.”
Mrs. C added:
Mr. Yi speaks English even better than Japanese, but his Japanese is far better than mine!”
Blushing, he said:
You flatter me too much.這幾位女朋友是住什麼地方的?”Where do these young ladies live?”
Mrs. C said:
“They all live in the little house out front. Like you, they have come here to recuperate.”
As she spoke, Mrs. C said to the female students:
Mr. Yi is a man of profound learning. On Sunday we shall ask him to preach to us!”
Cries of “Goodbye, goodbye” came from everyone’s lips. All those who had attended the gathering departed. Night, silent as Death itself, had come and occupied the space within the house. Taking leave of Mrs. C, he returned to his upstairs room. He tidied things a little in the dim light of dusk, and then the electric lights came on.

At six forty, the Japanese woman came to call him to supper. After supper and thirty minutes of conversation, he went upstairs to sleep.

The next morning, he was awakened by the chirping of birds outside his window. By the time he rose, the bright-red sunlight had flooded the woods along the sandy shore. He opened the south-facing window and saw the vacant ground and groves all around clothed in wholesome sunlight, lying beneath the boundless blue sky. In the distance he saw a locomotive at Hōjō Station puffing smoke, with several passenger and freight cars coupled behind it; he knew the first train for Tokyo was about to depart. The sunlight was blocked in midair by the train’s smoke, which appeared a reddish-black gray, while a dark shadow fell obliquely across the station’s tin roof. From the station, two narrow rails gradually spread apart and passed not far below him; on the polished tracks, he thought he could faintly see the sky reflected like blue velvet. Looking all around, he felt that the vast sky, the houses near and far, the woods, open ground, railway, and village roads were all steeped in sunlight and brimming with life, as though smiling. He drew a deep breath of fresh air and felt some vitality returning to his own innards; with a smile, he softly said to himself:

After standing there in a daze for a long while, he took his toothbrush, tooth powder, soap, and towel downstairs to wash in the kitchen. When the red-eyed Japanese woman saw him, she called out loudly:

After washing, he returned upstairs and sat for a while; then the Japanese woman brought him a cup of black tea, two pieces of bread, and some sugar. When he had finished, he saw that Mrs. C had still not returned, so he went out for a walk. Leaving through the little gate woven of wooden rods, he walked a few steps eastward along the village road by which he had come the day before. On the veranda of a thatched cottage, he saw two young men basking in the sun and holding forth. They looked like the two students he had met the previous day, so he went in. When they saw him, the two young men deferentially brought out a cushion and asked him to sit. The near-sighted, long-haired youth was so excessively respectful that he almost made one laugh. After he had seated himself, the long-haired, near-sighted man smiled, stared blankly at him for a moment, and moved his lips several times. Knowing that he wished to speak, he said to him:
Wouldn’t you say the weather is fine today?”
"Es, es, beri gud. beri good. and how longu hab you been in Japan?"“Es, es, beri gud. beri good. and how longu hab you been in Japan?”
(“是,是,好得很,好得很,你住在日本多久了?”)(“Yes, yes, very good, very good. How long have you lived in Japan?”)
The near-sighted man suddenly came out with several sentences of Japanese-accented English. Watching his lips change from pointed to round and listening to his pronunciation, as though he had a pebble lodged beneath the root of his tongue, he wanted to burst out laughing. But as they had only just met, he could not laugh aloud, so he merely smiled and replied:

(“差不多八年了,已經長得很呢,是不是?”)(“Nearly eight years; that is quite a long time, isn’t it?”)
The other young man, who was around twenty, laughed at the sight of the near-sighted man speaking English, then said to him with blunt good humor:
“Oh, give it up! Your broken English is worse than saying nothing at all. Ha, ha...”
After hearing his reply, the near-sighted man said again:
"Do you undastand my Ingulish?"“Do you undastand my Ingulish?”

"Yes, of course I do, but……"“Yes, of course I do, but...”

Before he could finish, the other man hastened to say:
"Alright, alright, leto us speaku Ingulish heeaaftar.“Alright, alright, leto us speaku Ingulish heeaaftar.”

The younger man said:
“Mr. Yi, do not let him pester you any longer. Let us take a walk down by the sea.”
He agreed. The younger man leapt down from the veranda and, clownishly, made a show of straightening his clothes, swayed his body left and right and back and forth, then bowed most deferentially to the near-sighted man and said:
"Gudo-bye! Mista K. gudo-bye!"“Gudo-bye! Mista K. gudo-bye!”
He could not help laughing. K, the near-sighted man, also said:

They crossed the yard of the thatched cottage, stepped through the long shadows of the pine trees, and after another few paces reached the sandy beach. There was not a soul on the tranquil shore, which was flooded with genial sunlight. The seawater reflected the sun’s rays as though it were smiling. Several lines of footprints were impressed in the sand. Looking far to the east, they saw several villages, with a few fishermen’s huts seemingly suspended in midair; a layer of transparent, pristine air enveloped the woods and rooftops. In the bay to the west, a small town seemed to float upon the sea. Its houses stood scattered here and there; behind them ran a low range of hills, and beyond the hills stretched the boundless azure sky. Several sailing ships lay at anchor at the mouth of the bay outside the town; their sails and masts evoked the atmosphere of a port. The young B said:

He looked in the direction B indicated, and sure enough, there were two little islands floating in the thin sea haze. As he gazed at the islands, his attention was suddenly drawn to the sky behind them.

“怎麼不跌下來,你不曾看過弗蘭斯著的Thais(泰衣斯)麼?“Why should he not fall? Have you never read France’s Thaïs? That saint who fasted and renounced desire fell from heaven on account of Thaïs’s flesh.

When B imitated the nearsighted K, he was just like a clown at the theater, gesturing with his hands and feet so vividly that Yiren laughed at every sentence, unable to stop. Eventually Yiren asked B:

Yiren burst out laughing again. The two of them's hearty laughter echoed in the quiet air of the shore, making the day's weather feel all the fresher and lovelier. Their two shadows, along with the footprints of their two pairs of leather shoes, criss-crossed the soft sand of the beach for a while, when suddenly they heard a clear peal of bells come drifting from the fair sky; knowing it was time for Bible class, they set off for Mrs. C's house.

When they reached Mrs. C's house, the nearsighted K and three girl students were already seated there gathered around Mrs. C. When K saw Yiren and B arrive, he jumped up and called out loudly in English:

The three girl students and Mrs. C all burst out laughing. The row of white teeth and the pair of dimples on the face of the girl student Yiren had studied so closely the day before made her all the more lovely. Yiren laughed along while stealing glances at her. Everyone took their seats, and Yiren again took yesterday's spot, sitting across from that girl student. After singing a hymn, everyone took turns reading aloud from the Bible. When it came to that girl student's turn to read, Yiren fixed his attention on her small mouth, and a flush rose naturally over her face. After she finished reading, Yiren was still gazing blankly at the curve of her lips; when she raised her head, her gaze met and mingled with his. She flushed crimson at once and lowered her head. Yiren too felt embarrassed, and fixed his gaze on the Bible in his hands. Of these subtle stirrings of feeling, probably not a single person present was aware. When Bible class was over and everyone was about to scatter and go home, the nearsighted K again said to Yiren in English:

Mrs. C said to Yiren:
The weather's very fine today; it would do you good to take a walk along the shore."

Yiren could not well refuse, and so had no choice but to go down to the shore together with K and B, the three of them. After walking a while, Yiren said he was tired and wanted to head home. K grabbed hold of him and said:

"Leto us pray!"
So saying, K knelt down; Yiren was startled by this, and had no choice but to bend his own knees as well. B, however, stood there watching without moving an inch. K again cried out a great many "Lord!"s and "God!"s and "Almighty God!"s. After crying out for a while, he stood up and said:

("Goodbye, goodbye.")
So saying, he turned around and strode off. Yiren, unable to make sense of it, brushed the sand and dirt from his knees with his hand while saying to B:
What's this all about—could he have gotten angry?"
B said:
Angry, nothing—this is just his nervous affliction!"
So saying, B again imitated K's manner, kneeling down on the ground and crying out "Almighty God! Lord! God!" Yiren again couldn't help laughing. From far off, suddenly the sound of a hymn being sung reached their ears. B said:

Yiren asked B whether he was a Christian. B said:

Yiren exchanged a few words with him on religious matters, and then each told the other which school he was enrolled in. It turned out B was a student at the Tokyo Higher Commercial School; at the end of last year he had come down with influenza, and had come to Bōshū to recuperate afterward. As the talk went on, Yiren asked him:

They walked along the shore a while longer, and watching their own shadows gradually shorten, saw that it was nearly twelve o'clock; Yiren then took leave of B and returned to Mrs. C's house.
At lunch, Yiren told Mrs. C that he intended to move to the back and live together with K and B. Mrs. C made no attempt to keep him, and once lunch was over, Yiren moved to the separate room at the back.

After putting his luggage and books in order, Yiren saw that it was already getting late, and went out alone to take a walk along the shore. The vast expanse of the blue sea was as flat and smooth as the surface of a mirror. The sunlight slanted low, its rays falling on the tips of the pine trees and casting several patches of shadow. The afternoon shore presented a scene quite different from that of the morning. Yiren gazed quietly at it for a while, feeling that the scenery all around was somehow beyond description. He thought to compare the morning scene to a pure young virgin afflicted with consumption, and the afternoon scene to a plump married woman past the age of ripeness. But on second thought, he felt the comparison was too vulgar. He stood watching for a while, then walked on with bowed head for a while; along the early-spring shore, only he himself and his thin, gaunt shadow were moving there. He walked westward facing the sun for a while, and seeing that he had already gone quite far, thought of turning back to walk home; glancing down, he suddenly noticed on the sand beneath his feet a freshly printed set of a woman's footprints. He looked them over back and forth for a while, and gathered that the owner of these footprints must be somewhere nearby in the woods. With no particular purpose in mind, he simply followed that line of footprints southward toward the pine woods on the shore. Before he had gone thirty paces, he saw, on the withered grass amid the tree shadows, a felt blanket spread out with a few books and a women's magazine lying on it. Because the withered grass grew so tall, he had not been able to see it from the water's edge; he knew this must belong to the owner of the footprints, but where that person had gone he had no idea. He stood there blankly for a moment, and just as he was thinking of turning back, he suddenly saw a woman coming through the woods; his curiosity bound his feet to the spot once more. By the time the woman drew near, he found his face flushing red without his willing it, and the pounding in his chest simply would not be suppressed; he could only force his gaze down and look at the ground, and returned the woman's bow, for by then she had already come right up before him—she turned out to be that girl student surnamed O.他好像是自家的卑陋的心情已經被她看破了的樣子,紅了臉對她賠罪說:He looked as though he felt his own base, unworthy feelings had already been seen through by her, and flushing, apologized to her:

Yiren then told her how he had been mistreated by others ever since childhood, and how, even up to this day, he had never once felt a trace of warmth. The clear shadows behind the two of them stretched longer with every step, and all around the sky was gradually taking on a tinge of purple. The lingering force of late winter could still be felt at this hour of dusk; the faint breeze blowing in from the sea penetrated their winter clothes and pierced into the feverish hearts of the two of them. Yiren glanced out toward the sea and saw, in the northwest corner of the sky, a snow-capped mountain shaped like an upturned heart, tinged with deep blue, smiling knowingly amid the soft evening glow; unable to help himself, Yiren cried out loudly:

He took his bath. After eating dinner, Yiren sat down under the electric light and wrote a long entry in his diary. He wrote in the song of Mignon, and the words she had said; the scenery of the dusk-lit shore, the sorrowful mood, his own tears, her slender hand, the smile of Mount Fuji, the ripples of the sea waves, the footprints on the sand — everything he had seen, heard, and felt that afternoon he set down in it. He wrote for more than two hours, finding it more and more absorbing the longer he went on; once finished, he read it over again and again, revising it again and again, spending yet another hour at it, by which time all the households of this coastal village had long since fallen into deep sleep. The cold, silent air of the room pressed down upon his head, his shoulders, his whole body; he looked back around the room and saw only his own enlarged shadow moving on the wall, and apart from a squeak or two of rats fighting overhead, no other sound stirred the air. The fire in the brazier had gone out too, and sitting there in the room he felt uneasy, so he quietly opened the door, shuffled on his straw sandals, and went down into the courtyard; the first-quarter half-moon of the eighth or ninth night was already slanting low in the western sky, about to set. Treading on the shadows of the pines, draped in pale gray moonlight, he passed once more through the pine woods and made his way down to the seashore. The silent scenery of the shore held, more than in daytime, a certain forlorn and pristine mood. Walking back and forth for a while in the moonlight that was about to set but had not yet done so, he made his way to the spot where he and she had walked that afternoon. When he had nearly reached it, he stopped and bent down to look for the footprints the two of them had left on the sand that afternoon. Like someone searching for a dream, he searched for a long while but could not find the two sets of footprints at all. Standing up, he walked westward a little further, then bent down again to search, and found the print of his own rubber-soled sandals. Following step by step behind his own footprints, he also found the trace of her footprints. His heart seemed to leap in his chest, and two verses from the Bible suddenly came to his mind.
But I say unto you, that whosoever looketh on a woman to lust after her hath committed adultery with her already in his heart. But I say unto you, that whosoever looketh on a woman to lust after her hath committed adultery with her already in his heart.
And if thy right eye offend thee, pluck it out, and cast it from thee: for it is profitable for thee that one of thy members should perish, and not that thy whole body should be cast into hell. And if thy right eye offend thee, pluck it out, and cast it from thee: for it is profitable for thee that one of thy members should perish, and not that thy whole body should be cast into hell.
Matthew 5.28-29Matthew 5.28-29
Although Yiren had already had contact with women several times, at this moment he felt as if his body had reverted to a time before his innocence was lost; his feelings toward O struck him as truly pure and noble, without the slightest trace of impure thought — yet when he thought of these two verses of scripture, conflict rose up in his heart once again. He stood up, closed his eyes, and pondered silently for a while. He wanted to call on God to help him, but the philosophical rationality in him simply would not allow him to pray; with his eyes closed he stood there four or five minutes, then shook his head, heaved a sigh, and turned to walk back all the same. As he walked, he turned his head toward the woods to the south, peering deeply into them. No lamplight could be seen over there — only a hazy layer of moonlight covering the woods, and the dark mass of the trees made one think of mysterious happenings. He looked for a while, and said to himself:
She must be living somewhere inside those woods; I wonder whether she is asleep or not — perhaps she is out there looking at the moonlight too.唉,可憐我的一生,可憐我的長失敗的生涯!”Ah, pity my whole life, pity this long career of failure of mine!"
The moon sank lower still, and its light grew grayer and paler; out on the sea there seemed to be a ship sailing across. He glanced at it, and in the ashen light saw only a black shadow like some monster stirring faintly upon the water; suddenly he grew afraid. Another gust of cool wind swept across the sea and over his face. He shivered, then lowered his head and hurried home in a few quick strides. After falling asleep, he fancied he heard a woman calling him outside the door; listening closely, he found it was indeed a voice singing “Mignon’s Song.” He ran outside and followed her down to the shore. The moon seemed about to set, and the whole western sky had turned a reddish black. Looking all around, he felt that the sea, the woods, and the beach had all turned reddish black as well. He looked at her and saw the surrounding reddish-black glow reflected upon her face, which was as deathly pale as a corpse. He wanted to speak to her, but could think of nothing to say. She too merely gazed at him in silence, her eyes brimming with clear tears. The two stood motionless, gazing at each other for a while amid the silence; then she turned and walked toward the woods. He immediately ran after her, but just as he reached the entrance to the woods, he suddenly encountered the wanton woman who had deceived him the previous summer, emerging from among the trees with a smile. With a cry of “Ah!” he tried to run home, but no matter how he struggled, his legs would not move; after suffering in anguish for a while, he finally awoke from his dream. His whole body was again drenched in cold sweat, and he could not sleep any more that night. The events of the previous summer returned to his mind. The previous summer he had still been in robust health; having graduated from the higher school and being about to enter university, he still had many hopes for his future. The hope and curiosity we feel when moving up to a more advanced school or relocating to a better place were fermenting in his breast as well. His financial circumstances were also easier then than they were now; of the five hundred yuan sent from home, well over half was still in the bank. He left N City, where his higher school was, and moved to Tokyo. After staying for a week at the Akakura Inn in Shiba Ward, he saw an advertisement for lodgings in the newspaper one morning. Since the advertised rooms stood just across from the First Higher School, they were not very far from the university either. He took a streetcar to inspect the place. It was the home of a middle-class family, and the landlord, surnamed N, was a sturdy man of fifty or sixty, huge in build; though fierce in appearance, he was exceedingly courteous in his manner. The rooms for rent were two upstairs chambers. He went up to inspect them and found them fairly clean. Just as he sat down to talk with the elderly landlord, an elegant woman of twenty-three or twenty-four came up the stairs. Carrying a tray of tea and fruit, she approached him, knelt respectfully before him, and bowed. He glanced at her, and she smiled and cast him a sidelong look. He, on the contrary, grew embarrassed, while she went downstairs as calmly as ever, looking almost triumphant. After agreeing to take the rooms, he went downstairs. As he left, she knelt again by the door and smilingly saw him off. Though he had been unable to examine her closely, from what he had glimpsed he was certain that the woman was a beauty. She was small in stature, with a long oval face and a luxuriant mass of black hair falling over her delicately pale forehead. Her eyes were very lively, and very large. All the way back to his inn, he indulged in fantasies on the streetcar.
“I have fame now; from September onward, I shall be a student at the Imperial University. I have enough money to support myself for a year, and I still have more than two hundred and eighty yuan in savings. Ah, money, love and fame!”The third condition is a woman. Ah, money, love and fame!”
Ah, money, love and fame!”
At this thought, a smile unconsciously spread across his face. A middle-aged woman seated opposite him in the streetcar seemed to be watching him, so he took from the pocket of his Western suit a copy of the newly published Japanese novel Aru Onna and began to read.
Early the next morning, he moved from the Akakura Inn to N’s house in Hongō. Since it was still very early, the woman he had seen the day before had not yet done her hair. In coarse clothes and with her hair disheveled, she looked even lovelier than when fully made up; the instant he saw her, he blushed and could not utter a word. She merely smiled as she helped him arrange the belongings brought over from the inn. One book chest was so heavy that he could not move it alone, so she hurried over and helped him carry it upstairs. As they carried it up the stairs, he stepped backward and collided squarely with her breast; she gently caught him in her arms and said:
If I hadn’t been here, you might have tumbled down.”
He felt a current of feminine electricity pass faintly into his body. His self-control was already gone; it was as though, chilled in winter, he had suddenly entered a bathroom billowing with hot steam, and he could only murmur dazedly:

Thank you, thank you!對不起對不起!……”I’m sorry, I’m sorry!…”
After he hurried away, she remained there laughing. Seeing his mortified embarrassment, she asked:
“你怕羞麼!“Are you shy?你怕羞我就下樓去!”If you’re shy, I’ll go downstairs!”
Just as he was about to answer, she turned and went downstairs.
The summer heat increased day by day, and his nervous debility likewise grew worse with each passing day. After he had lived at N’s house for two weeks, he learned all about the household. Old N was the woman’s adoptive father, and the woman, whose name was M, was the natural daughter of one of his friends. M had a husband who had married into her family; he was teaching at a middle school in the countryside and therefore did not live at home.

Every day while washing and dressing, the woman stripped her upper body completely bare, exposing her breasts and chest. Whenever he rose to wash his face, he could not help being subjected to the temptation of her naked body; consequently, his disorder of the nerves could not help worsening day by day.

One afternoon, while he was indulging in a nap, M crept silently up the stairs by herself and slipped inside his mosquito net. The moment she entered the net, he awoke. He smiled at her; she smiled back and whispered:

“There isn’t anyone downstairs.”
He extended one hand from beneath the blanket covering him; leaning against his arm, she lowered herself sideways and slipped under the blanket.
The next day, she and her father wanted him to go with them to Kamakura to bathe in the sea. Because he disliked sea bathing, he said:
“Sea bathing is terribly vulgar; we would do better to go to the hot springs at Hakone.”
Two days later, he, M, and M’s father set out from Tokyo for Hakone. On the day after they settled in at the Naraya Inn in Miyanoshita, M insisted that he accompany her to Lake Ashi. Since Old N could not leave the household unattended, he returned to Tokyo after lunch that day.
After lunch, once they had seen Old N onto his conveyance, he and she set out for Lake Ashi. They had not been slowly climbing the steep mountain road for even an hour before she could walk no farther. When at last they reached Lake Ashi, he and she took rooms at the Kinokuniya Inn. After changing their clothes, washing off their sweat, and drinking two glasses of cold Kirin beer, they felt their strength return; then they closed the paper screens and lay down together again.

After a little more than an hour, as the sun sank westward, he and she went to bathe. After supper, when they had sat for twenty or thirty minutes and it was still very noisy downstairs, M turned out the electric light.
The next day was exceedingly hot, so he and she remained another day at Lake Ashi; it was not until the afternoon of the third day that they returned to Tokyo.
When he and M reached the entrance of the house in Hongō, Old N came out to meet them and said:
“M兒!W君從病院裡出來了!”“M, my child! Mr. W has come out of the hospital!”
這……Then…病好了麼,完全好了麼!”Has he recovered? Has he recovered completely?”
An expression of extraordinary joy appeared on M’s face. He assumed that W was a relative of hers and was therefore not surprised; but after entering the house, he saw a man of about thirty sitting in her room. The man was powerfully built, with a fleshy, dissipated look upon his face. When he saw him enter, he rose and exchanged courtesies with him. Old N said:

“This is Mr. W; he has lived with us for two years. He graduated from the College of Letters this year. He knows your name as well; since he studies Chinese literature, he has already read your poems in magazines.

While speaking to W, M stripped off her clothes, took a towel, and wiped the sweat from her body; when she had finished, she held the towel out to him and said:

You wipe yourself too!”
He thought it unseemly, but reluctantly wiped the sweat from his face. Although this was the first time he and W had met, he felt that he could never get along with him. He did not know why, but he persistently felt that W was his enemy. After exchanging a few idle remarks, he went upstairs to fetch a towel and soap, then went out to bathe. When he returned from his bath, he heard M laughing and talking inside as he stood at the door; she sounded beside herself with delight. After he entered, M said to him:
“Mr. W is treating us to chicken tonight. He has recovered from his illness, and today marks his release from the hospital.”
M added that W had suffered from kidney disease and spent two months in the hospital, and had only been discharged that day. He mumbled a few words of acknowledgment and went upstairs. That night his insomnia returned; he lay with his eyes open, unable to sleep at all. At midnight, he heard the door of M’s room downstairs open softly, then M’s footsteps mounting one by one to W’s room next to hers; after a few murmured words, there came M’s peculiar low, moaning gasps. It was as though cold water had been dashed all over him; the beating of his heart stopped, and the blood in his brain congealed. W的肥胖的肉體,M的半開半閉的眼睛,散在枕上的她的頭髮,她的嘴唇和舌尖,她的那一種粉和汗的混和的香氣,下體的顫動……His ears pricked up like a dog’s, and he seemed able to see every movement downstairs: W’s fat body, M’s half-open, half-closed eyes, her hair scattered over the pillow, her lips and the tip of her tongue, that scent of hers in which powder mingled with sweat, the trembling of her lower body… At this point in his imagining, he could bear it no longer. The more he tried to sleep, the more impossible sleep became. The furtive rustling downstairs came ceaselessly through the floorboards to his eardrums. He dared not make a sound, nor did he dare move his body in the least. The anguish and remorse in his breast rose all at once like a tempest; two icy tears ran from the corners of his eyes to the roots of his ears, then fell from there onto the pillow.
Only as dawn was about to break did M steal quietly back to her own room; he listened for a while and felt that all sound downstairs had ceased. After tossing and turning several times, he finally fell asleep. Before much more than an hour had passed, he awoke again. When he went downstairs to wash his face, M and W were still asleep. Only Old N came down from a small room across the courtyard—he slept in that room, as it turned out—rubbed his eyes, and said to him:

You’re up early!”
He answered, hastily finished washing his face, slipped on his leather shoes, and ran outside. His mind was in as much turmoil as a beehive, and he had no idea what to do. After wandering aimlessly for a while, he found himself at the streetcar junction at the Kasugachō crossroads. Without caring where it went, he jumped onto a streetcar and rode along; after changing cars several times in a daze, he arrived at the terminus in Meguro. The sun was already high. After wandering back and forth along paths between the fields for more than ten minutes, he felt his head begin to ache from the sun; only when he touched it with his hand did he realize that he had left without his hat. Looking down at his clothes and feet, even he found himself ridiculous. He wore nothing but a white silk nightshirt and, on his bare feet, a pair of white leather boots. He felt mortally ashamed. He wanted to go back, yet could not; after pacing about for a while, he sat down on a patch of grass beneath the shade of a tree. He took out his wallet and looked inside. It still held three five-yuan notes and two or three yuan in change; fortunately, his bankbook was tucked inside as well, and when he opened it, he found that only one hundred and twenty yuan remained. He sat quietly for a while and thought; then he suddenly remembered the Akakura Inn, where he had stayed a month before. He rose and set off, crossed several village roads, and found a rickshaw puller’s house. Climbing into a rickshaw, he had himself taken straight to the Akakura Inn. Behind the rickshaw’s curtains, he recalled the fantasies he had entertained on the streetcar a month before, after returning from viewing the rooms, and two great tears unconsciously fell from his eyes.
“名譽,金錢,婦女,我如今有一點什麼?“Fame, money, women—what part of any of them do I have now? Nothing, nothing at all.我……I… All I have is this body of mine, which is soon to die.”
When he arrived at the Akakura Inn, the servants at the inn took one look at him and burst out laughing:
Yiren!你被強盜搶劫了麼?”Were you robbed by bandits?"
Yiren could not answer a single word; he went up to the counter, wrote out a note, and said to the servant:
Take this note and go to N's house at No. ××× on ×× Street in Hongo, and bring my things back."
Yiren went silently into an empty room and sat there a while; all manner of sorrowful things surged up in his heart like a spring tide, and the more he thought the more bitter he grew, until he very nearly wished to end his own life — two lines of tears fell one after another down his cheeks.
After about two hours had passed, the servant came back and said:
Mr. Yiren, you really do love to stir up trouble. That woman says you bullied her, and now you want to run far away. No matter what, she refused to let me bring your things back. She said there was something important she needed to tell you in person, and that you must go yourself. A man of about thirty, built like an ox, said you were far too rude. Because he spoke insolently, I got into a quarrel with him.那一隻牛大概是她的男人吧?”That ox of a man is probably her husband, I suppose?"
What else did she say?"
“她說的話多得很呢!"She said a great deal! She said you were far too cowardly! Not at all like a real man — that's what she said after she read your note."
Is that so? I'm very sorry to have made you run there for nothing."
As he said this, Yiren took out two banknotes and pressed them into the servant's hand. Just as the servant was about to go out,伊人又叫他回來,要他去拿了幾張信紙信封和筆硯來。Yiren called him back again and asked him to fetch some letter paper, envelopes, a brush, and an inkstone. M。Once the brush, inkstone, and paper had been brought, Yiren wrote a long letter to M.
At ten in the morning of the third day, on the second-class deck of the steamship Kasuga Maru departing from Yokohama, Yiren stood there in a daze. He stood by the iron railing, gazing without blinking at the land as it grew smaller and smaller. The ship left Tokyo Bay and still he stood there in a daze, though the land could no longer be clearly seen, for his eyes had already blurred with tears the moment the ship left Yokohama Bay; a few pearl-like drops still clung undried to his eyelashes, and so he could not go below to converse with the other passengers.

The clock on the wall in the main house opposite struck two, and a few more tears dripped down onto Yiren's pillow; the events of that afternoon, the events at the Hakone inn, the events of the night he returned from Hakone — he remembered them all with perfect clarity, as though they had happened only yesterday. The anguish he had felt standing on the deck of the Kasuga Maru in Yokohama harbor came alive again in his breast, and he could not help but taste once more the bitterness he had tasted then. He shook his head, turned over, and said softly:

O, oh O, you are my angel — you ought still to come and save me."
Yiren then recalled the song of Mignon that she had sung on the seashore that day:
“他這可憐的孩子呀,他們欺負了你了麼?"Poor child that he is, have they mistreated you?
“Was hat man dir, du armes Kind, getan?”"Was hat man dir, du armes Kind, getan?"
Yiren wept for a while, and gradually his heart grew calm; by the time the clock in the main house opposite struck three, he was already breathing softly in sleep.
When Yiren woke it was already past nine. Outside the window it seemed to be raining; the sound of drops leaking from the eaves reached the ears of Yiren as he lay beneath the quilt. He opened his eyes, dozed for what seemed another quarter of an hour, and then got up. He opened the door and looked out: a fine, misty drizzle veiled the houses, the woods, and the shore, making them look just like an ink-wash painting. Yiren washed his face, took out a novel by George Moore, and leaning against the hibachi read a few pages before breakfast arrived. After breakfast, some thirty or forty minutes later, K and B came to chat, and Yiren asked them whether there was Bible class today; they said there was none, that Bible class was held only on Tuesdays and Fridays. Yiren's whole heart was set on seeing O, and so he was eager to go to Mrs. C's house as early as possible; hearing what they said, he could not help feeling a little disappointed. When B and K mentioned it was time for lunch, they each went back to their own rooms.

吃了中飯,伊人看了一篇喬其墨亞(George Moore)的《往事記》(Memoirs of my Dead Life),那鐘聲又當當的響了起來。After lunch, Yiren read a piece from George Moore's Memoirs of My Dead Life, when the bell began to toll again, clang, clang. Yiren went almost running to Mrs. C's house. K and B came too, and the two schoolgirls came as well; only O did not come, and Yiren's heart, restless and unsettled, simply would not grow calm. One minute passed, five minutes passed, and O still did not come. The hymns were sung and the prayers were finished, and everyone was about to disperse. Yiren wanted to ask the girls about it, but in the end could not bring himself to speak. Just as the two schoolgirls were leaving, K asked them instead:

One of the younger schoolgirls answered:

She has a fever again today."
Yiren, who had all along been lost in idle fancies, felt on hearing this as though a death sentence had been pronounced upon him; for a moment it seemed as if the very veins in his body would burst. He put on his shoes and hurried out after the two schoolgirls. Once no one else was in sight, he caught up with them and asked the two schoolgirls:

I'm terribly sorry, but where does Miss O live? Would you be able to take me to see her?"
The two schoolgirls had been walking on ahead without noticing that he was following behind them, and at this question they turned around as though startled to look at him.
你怎麼雨傘都沒有帶來,我們也是上○君那裡去的,就請同去吧!”Why, you haven't even brought an umbrella! We're on our way to Miss O's too — please come along with us!"
The two schoolgirls then lent him one of their umbrellas, and the two of them shared the other as they walked on ahead. Walking some ten or twenty minutes through the misty, smoke-like drizzle, the three of them arrived at the gate of a newly built single-story house; a small nameplate reading "O" hung on the gate, and the small little door suited well the small little house. After the three of them opened the gate and went in, an old woman came out to greet them, saying:

Yiren followed them in and first sat down in the parlor. When the old woman brought out tea, she pointed at Yiren and asked the two schoolgirls:
And who might this gentleman be...?"
So saying, she bowed to Yiren. The two schoolgirls, speaking as they did so, also bowed apologetically.
This gentleman has come from Tokyo. ……”He's a friend of Mrs. C's, and a Christian too..."
Yiren also said:
My name is Yi. This is our first meeting — I hope you'll be so kind as to look after me in the future..."
When the introductions were over, the old woman led Yiren and the two schoolgirls into O's bedroom, which was right next to the parlor. As Yiren entered and looked, he saw O lying, her face flushed, beneath a crepe quilt patterned with red flowers, a book lying open beside her pillow. At the foot of the bed stood a hibachi, and beside the hibachi lay a cushion to sit on — this, it seemed, was where the old woman usually sat. In the iron kettle on the hibachi, boiling water sent up its steam, so that the room was very warm. The moment Yiren entered this bedroom, he caught a whiff of perfume and powder — a scent peculiar, it seemed, to a maiden's chamber. After leading them in, the old woman drew the hibachi forward, and fetching three more cushions from the parlor, invited them to sit. Once Yiren had entered this sickroom, he felt a sorrowful foreboding, as though someone were whispering close to his ear:
Poor thing, this young girl — there is no hope left for her. Why must you come and see her, only to burden her with one more worry?"
The moment he saw her thin, delicate face flushed red by fever, and her soft, sorrowful smile, Yiren felt all the more anguished; his eyes reddened and for a long while he could not speak, only listening as the three of them talked softly together:
(○的話)To come and see me in such rain — I really am very sorry to trouble you." (O speaking)
Not at all — we had nothing to do at home anyway." (the first schoolgirl)
“C夫人來過了麼?”(第二個女學生)"Has Mrs. C been to see you?" (the second schoolgirl)
Mrs. C hasn't come yet — there's no need to trouble her over such a small illness; you needn't have told her at all."
But we already told her."
It was only after hearing us that Mr. Yiren learned you weren't well."
I really am sorry to have you come and see me like this, but I think I shall probably be up again by tomorrow."
Yiren felt that O's gaze, just like his own, kept evading his. So Yiren merely bowed his head and sat listening to their idle talk, until at last the youngest of the schoolgirls said to him:
Yiren! When you go back, would you tell Mrs. C that Miss O's illness isn't serious?"
Yiren earnestly raised his eyes to look once at O, then at once lowered his head again and said:
Even if it's a minor illness, you still must take care of yourself..."
Having said this much, he found he could not go on.
The three of them sat a while longer, chatted a good deal more, and then rose to leave.
Please take good care of yourself!
Rest well and look after yourself!
“小心些………!"Do be careful.........!
Thank you, thank you — I'm so sorry to have troubled you!
As he was about to leave, Yiren gazed deeply once more at O, and O's eyes, too, lingered a moment upon his face. The three of them then made their way back.
On Sunday the sky cleared, and the weather turned a good deal warmer. After breakfast, Yiren went with K and B along the village road, lying bathed in sunlight, to attend service at the church in Hōjō town.

The countryside after the rain was, wherever one looked, filled with fresh and clean scenery. A village road made of sand, mud, and quartz stones had been washed clean by the rain and lay there reflecting the sunlight. The withered trees beside the road, set against the pale blue-green sky as a backdrop, held their branches upright as though some fresh vital force were being stored up within them — it seemed the time for budding could not be far off. The shadows cast by the bare trees onto the open ground looked just like the sketches of some ancient Southern-school ink painting. Yiren exchanged a few words with K and B, but noticing that near-sighted K seemed to have a look of displeasure showing on his face, he did not continue speaking.

On arriving at the church, a pastor of about thirty, short in stature and with a tuft of short whiskers along his jaw, came out to greet them. This was the first time the pastor and Yiren had met, and after exchanging a few words, Yiren felt that he too was a quiet, reticent, good man. The pastor, too, was near-sighted and wore a pair of steel-rimmed spectacles; when he spoke, his voice was very deep and melancholy. After the hymn-singing and the sermon were over, it was time for open testimony. Near-sighted K sprang up onto the platform and said:

We Orientals are no good, no good at all. Our faith as Orientals is entirely false — there are some who take up religion, it seems, simply because they want to learn a few phrases of a foreign language, or want to mingle a bit with the women of the congregation. That is why we Orientals are no good; if we are to believe, we ought to believe just as the early Christians did. There's no need to speak foreign languages, and no need to mingle with the women of the congregation."
Yiren felt his face flush at once — these words of K's were plainly aimed as an attack on him.第一何以不說“日本人”要說“東洋人”?For one thing, why say "Orientals" instead of "Japanese"? Of all those present, who besides Yiren was not Japanese? Speaking foreign languages and socializing with female church members—these were Yiren's recent pastimes. After K finished his speech, everyone rose to pray, and once the prayer ended, the service was over. Yiren simply could not understand why K should oppose him to such an extent. Those who had come to worship, apart from Mrs. C and the two schoolgirls, were all residents of Hōjō town, so K's speech was probably beyond most of them to grasp; thinking of this, Yiren felt somewhat relieved. Before the crowd had dispersed, Yiren took B by the hand and hurried out of the church. Having walked the length of Hōjō's bustling street, just as they were about to turn east in front of the station, Yiren said to B:

Once they had passed the station and reached the seashore, Yiren asked:
“B君,剛才K君講的話,你可知道是指誰說的?”"B, do you know who K was referring to just now in his speech?"
That was aimed at you."

“K何以要這樣的攻擊我呢?”"Why should K attack me like that?"
You should know that K has his heart set on ○. The day before yesterday you went with her to Tateyama, and yesterday you went to her house to see her—he's found out about all of it.他還在C夫人的面前說你呢!”He's even been talking about you in front of Mrs. C!"
Hearing this, Yiren fell silent, but the pained look on his face was enough to reveal the state of his feelings. After walking on a little way, he asked B again:
What's your opinion on this matter—are you saying I shouldn't be associating with Miss ○?"
That's hard for me to say, but speaking from conscience, my sympathies are with K."
Yiren and B walked on in silence a while longer, and Yiren said to himself:
Here I go playing Rudin again."
Sunlight fell upon the shore, and the grains of silica in the sand glinted here and there like diamonds. A layer of fine, translucent blue waves broke at their feet; Yiren walked on for a while with his head bowed, then raised it to look at the pale sky, and felt a desolate, lonely, chill feeling fill his breast—the mood of Rousseau's Reveries of a Solitary Walker, which he had once read, came surging into his mind like a tide, and he said to B:

On Sunday evening, there was another prayer meeting at the church in Hōjō, and after the prayers, the pastor invited Yiren up to the pulpit to speak. Yiren chose a line from the Sermon on the Mount as the subject of his address:
“Blessed are the poor in spirit; for their's is the Kingdom of Heaven。” Matthew 5.3"Blessed are the poor in spirit; for their's is the Kingdom of Heaven." Matthew 5:3
Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven."
As for this word 'heart,' in English it is translated 'spirit,' in German 'Geist,' in French 'esprit'—in every case it is meant, roughly, in the sense of 'spirit' or 'mind.' Those who suffer in spirit are blessed, for the suffering Jesus himself bore was likewise a suffering of the spirit. As for this word 'poor,' I think it carries two meanings. The first is the ordinary sense of 'poor' as in material poverty—that is, suffering that begins in material want and extends to the spirit. The second is the sense of solitary suffering, which is purely a suffering of the spirit. As I see it, both these meanings are contained within Jesus's words. Tolstoy said that the Sermon on the Mount is the very core of Christ's teaching, that the doctrine of Jesus amounts to nothing more than the precepts given on the mountain, and that all the disputes of later theologians are strained and far-fetched. Heresies that stray from the true path, all those branches and leaves, are but arguments that obscure Jesus's true meaning, not torches that illuminate his teaching. I think these words from Tolstoy's treatise on faith are of great value. The doctrine of Jesus was, in truth, already spoken in full by Jesus on the mountain. And if the doctrine of Jesus is exhausted in the Sermon on the Mount, then I would venture that the Sermon on the Mount is itself exhausted in this one phrase: 'Blessed are the poor in spirit.' For 'blessed are the poor in spirit' is the outline of the whole sermon on the mountain; as Jesus climbed the mountain in silence, what was in his mind was precisely the one phrase that could sum up his whole meaning. Seeing that the multitude had followed him, once he had sat down on the mountain, he opened his mouth and spoke first the outline of what he meant to say:
Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven."
The sermon that follows is simply the explanation and elaboration of this one outline. I imagine you have all studied the Gospel of Matthew, so I need not go on with the rest of it. What I wish to do now is tell you what thoughts I myself have about this key phrase, and where, exactly, its proof may be found—for whatever it may be worth to you as a reference. Part of our suffering in spirit comes from material dissatisfaction. Take, for instance, the theft committed by Jean Valjean, the hero of Hugo's Les Misérables—an act that arose from material poverty; the anguish he suffered afterward then became a torment of the spirit. There are, moreover, some economists who, standing on materialist ground, wish to trace the cause of all pessimistic thought back to material dissatisfaction. They say that if Schopenhauer had had an ideal lover, his philosophy, The World as Will and Representation, would never have come to be. This is perhaps too extreme a view, and yet it holds a grain of truth. Thus material dissatisfaction can indeed give rise to sorrow of the spirit. Jesus's words, 'blessed are the poor in spirit,' teach us that we ought to endure poverty and hardship, and not covet material satisfaction. One great virtue of Christianity is that it teaches people to honor honest poverty and not to covet worldly wealth and rank. There is a passage in the Bible saying that a rich man must cast away his riches before he can enter the kingdom of heaven, for the gate of heaven is exceedingly narrow. St. Francis, the saint of Assisi, is an example of one who honored poverty and scorned wealth: he cast aside his father's and forefathers' fortune and willingly took poverty as his companion—by his own account, he 'married' poverty. What tremendous will that took! Who could fail to be moved by him, standing in the courtroom stripping off his own clothes to return them to his father! This shows how material poverty can be turned into a poverty of the spirit. Jesus teaches us to scorn wealth and honor poverty precisely in order to save us from this layer of spiritual suffering. Seen in this light, Christianity is, after all, a religion of the poor and suffering, and so it cannot stand together with today's suddenly-rich men, or with the conscienceless men of power. Let us now go on to speak of poverty that is purely of the spirit. Those who are poor purely in spirit are, as the text goes on to say, those who mourn, the merciful, those who hunger and thirst after righteousness, and those who love peace, show mercy, and are persecuted for righteousness' sake—people who, in our East, would be called men of virtue. The ancients said that virtue is never solitary, that it will always have neighbors; but now it is quite the opposite. Those who urge peace and counsel an end to war are, instead, thrown into prison. Those who, for righteousness' sake, speak up for the injustices done to laborers are, instead, made convicts at hard labor. Those who resist the state's unreasonable laws and institutions are burned to death. When we read European history and come to the massacre of the Puritans, or Luther's persecution at the hands of the German princes of his day, who can help but be roused to anger? These people, who willingly suffer society's cruelty and are ready to sacrifice themselves for the multitude, are all people who feel poverty in the spirit—and so Jesus said: 'Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.' Last, there is yet another kind of person poor in spirit: those of a pure heart. Such people, holding fast to a pure spirit, wish to love their fellow men and all things; but because of society's inherited customs, the habits of nations, and the prejudices between peoples, they cannot fully realize the love that Jesus taught, and in the spirit of such people there must arise a boundless poverty. There is yet another kind of person, akin to those of a pure heart: those whose bodies are afflicted with illness, who know full well what God's will is and what the love of Jesus is, and yet can never manage to carry it out. This kind of person suffers most in spirit, and is also the most numerous in the world. All those frail, fin-de-siècle idealists who cannot be satisfied with today's shallow, materialistic world, and yet cannot attain their hope of a joyful world to come, may be counted among this class of people poor in spirit. Though in this fallen present world they can find not the least sympathy or comfort, the paradise of the world to come will surely belong to them."

B and the young man were nearly coming to blows, and Yiren quietly slipped outside alone. The shops along the Hōjō street had all gone to sleep; the long, silent street was bathed in cold moonlight, and a chill wind blowing from the north, mixed with grains of sand, struck against Yiren's face. Yiren gave a few shivers and walked home in silence; just as he reached the front of Hōjō station and turned east, a few slightly drunk laborers came from the opposite direction, humming a rustic country tune softly as they passed. The distance between the laborers and Yiren gradually widened, and their singing gradually faded into a murmur; under this sharp chill of a spring moon, in this silent late-night town of a coastal fishing village, the trembling trailing notes of the laborers' song were truly mournful and pitiful. As Yiren walked on in silence, watching his own shadow appear and vanish among the tree shadows, listening all the while to the laborers' plaintive, desolate folk tune, he suddenly felt a sting in his nose—and a certain line that ○ had once said to him came back into his mind:

What it’s about
伊人, a Chinese student in Tokyo, is introduced through other people's amused stories about him. He is earnest, sickly and theatrical: Christian faith, vegetarianism, German poetry and schemes of moral self-discipline all become parts of an ideal life he cannot quite live. At a tea room he meets the older European missionary C and C's family, then travels south to the warm Bōsō Peninsula, where sea, hills and fishing villages seem like the hospitable Romantic south promised in Goethe's song of Mignon. The household includes a young woman identified only as ○. 伊人 is immediately drawn to her voice and her singing, but the attraction is filtered through religious scruple, literary fantasy and his conviction that he is constitutionally incapable of ordinary happiness. Long conversations and walks make him feel admitted to a family and close to a woman, yet he continually observes himself having the feeling instead of simply inhabiting it.
The southern refuge does not cure him. ○ falls ill, and his visits to her warm bedroom mingle genuine concern with an intense awareness of her body and perfume; he imagines a tragic fate before anything has happened. He broods over differences of race, faith and station, misreads gestures, withdraws, and becomes jealous when other men are present. The Mignon song that promises travel toward a beloved south returns as an irony: this real journey south has produced no decisive confession or mutual promise. After a cold evening, 伊人 develops a high fever of his own. C夫人 brings medicine, the doctor fears pneumonia and orders him to hospital, and the last scene leaves him almost waxen in a white bed while C and his wife speak quietly under a dim light. The text then appends Yu's Chinese version of Goethe's song in full. Rather than resolve the romance, the story suspends 伊人 between bodily sickness and an idealized south, making his failure to act the substance of the plot and turning the lyric translation into the destination he can imagine but cannot reach.
When it was written 背景
Dated 27 July 1921, 南遷 was first collected that October with 沉淪 and 銀灰色的死 in Yu Dafu's debut volume 《沉淪》. Yu's own preface called it the decline of an inactive idealist, and its student setting, physical weakness, Christianity, European reading and frustrated attraction belong to the same autobiographically charged territory as the title story without simply continuing its plot. For a learner it is longer and more socially crowded than 沉淪: initials, honorifics, bits of German and English, and extended descriptions of the Bōsō landscape require patience. The compensations are clear scenes—tea, travel, singing, sickroom—and much of the middle is direct conversation. Read the recurring Goethe lyric as a map rather than a puzzle: each return to the imagined southern country measures the distance between 伊人's cultivated ideal and his inability to form a sustaining relationship in the actual south.
