The Good Story

The lamp flame was gradually shrinking, signaling that the kerosene was running low;Besides, the kerosene was not a good brand, and had long since smoked the lampshade dim.The dense crackle of firecrackers sounded all around, tobacco smoke hung close by: it was a heavy, drowsy night.

I closed my eyes, leaned back, and rested against the back of the chair;the hand holding the Chuxue Ji lay upon my knee.

In my drowsiness, I saw a good story.

This story was beautiful, elegant, and delightful. Many beautiful people and beautiful things, interwoven like a sky of cloud-brocade, flew and darted like ten thousand racing stars, and at the same time unfurled outward, on and on without end.

、……I seemed to remember once taking a small boat along the Shanyin road, and on both banks the tallow trees, the new rice shoots, wild flowers, chickens, dogs, clusters of trees and withered trees, thatched huts, pagodas, temples, farmers and village wives, village girls, clothes hung out to dry, monks, straw rain-capes, the sky, clouds, bamboo, ……were all reflected in the clear green little river, and with every stroke of the oar, each of them, carrying glinting sunlight along with the duckweed, algae, and swimming fish in the water, rippled together. All those reflections and things: every one dissolved, and moreover swayed, expanded, and merged into one another;退and just as they merged, they would draw back again, returning close to their original shapes.Their edges were all jagged like the crests of summer clouds, rimmed with sunlight, giving off a mercury-colored flame.Every river I had ever passed was like this.

And the story I now saw was the same.Against the ground of the blue sky in the water, all things interlaced upon it, weaving themselves into a single piece, forever vivid, forever unfurling — I could not see where this piece came to an end.

By the river, beneath a withered willow, a few slender stalks of hollyhock must have been planted by a village girl. The great red blossoms and the mottled red blossoms both floated on the water, now suddenly breaking into fragments, now stretching long, threads of rouge-colored water, yet without any blurring halo.、……The thatched hut, the dog, the pagoda, the village girl, the clouds, ……were all floating too.The great red blossoms, one by one, were all stretched long, and now became a vigorous, bursting band of red brocade.。……The band wove into the dog, the dog wove into the white clouds, the white clouds wove into the village girl. ……退In an instant, they would draw back again. But the reflection of the mottled red blossoms had already broken apart and stretched out, about to weave itself into the pagoda, the village girl, the dog, the thatched hut, the clouds.

Now the story I saw grew clear — beautiful, elegant, delightful, and bright.Above the blue sky were countless beautiful people and beautiful stories; I saw them one by one, knew them one by one.

。……。I was just about to gaze at them fixedly. ……。

Just as I was about to gaze at them, I gave a sudden start, opened my eyes, and the cloud-brocade had already crumpled and gone into disarray, as if someone had flung a great stone into the river, and the water waves had abruptly reared up, tearing the whole piece of reflection into shreds.,』Unconsciously I hurried to grasp the Chuxue Ji, which was on the verge of falling to the ground; before my eyes there still remained a few fragments of rainbow-colored reflection.

I truly loved this good story, and while the fragmentary reflections still remained, I wanted to chase it back, complete it, keep it.,——I threw down the book, leaned forward and reached out my hand for a pen — but there was not the slightest fragment of reflection left; I saw only the dim lamplight — I was no longer in the little boat.

……。But I still remember having seen this good story, on that heavy, drowsy night……。

What it’s about

A man dozing over a book sees something beautiful and loses it. The lamp is burning down and warning him the paraffin is low, the shade is sooted dark, firecrackers are going off nearby and tobacco smoke hangs round him: a dull, drowsy night. He shuts his eyes and leans back with a copy of 初學記 on his knee, and in the blur he sees a good story — beautiful, graceful, interesting, many lovely people and lovely things woven together like a sky of cloud-brocade, flying like ten thousand meteors and unrolling without end. What he is remembering is a boat along 山陰道: tallow trees and new rice and wild flowers, chickens and dogs, thatched huts, pagodas, monasteries, farmers and village women, washing hung out, monks, straw capes and hats, sky, cloud, bamboo — all of it upside down in the clear green water and shaken apart by every stroke of the oar.

The middle of the piece is that reflection dissolving and re-forming: shapes spread and merge and shrink back towards their own outlines, their edges as ragged as the tops of summer clouds and rimmed with a mercury-coloured flame; the tall red hollyhocks by the withered willow are drawn out into a splashing sash of red brocade, the sash is woven into the dog, the dog into the white cloud, the cloud into the village girl. Just as it comes clear and bright and he is about to look at it properly, he starts awake — the brocade is crumpled and torn as though someone had thrown a stone into the river, he grabs the 初學記 before it falls, and a few rainbow-coloured fragments are still in front of his eyes. He throws down the book and reaches for a pen to catch the story before it goes, and there is nothing there: only the dim lamp, and he is not in the boat. But he remembers having seen it, in the drowsy night.

When it was written 背景

Dated 24 February 1925. It is the one page of 野草 with no cruelty in it, which is why it is usually read against 死火 and 墓碣文 rather than on its own, and the loveliness is doing an argument's work: the good story cannot be written down, only remembered. Two things to look up first. 山陰道 is the road outside Shaoxing, Lu Xun's own country, proverbial since 世說新語 for scenery arriving faster than a traveller can take it in; 初學記 is a Tang encyclopaedia, exactly the sort of book one dozes over. The prose is the densest listing in the collection — long strings of nouns divided by commas — so read it for the picture rather than word by word.
