Mr. Feng Y.S., through a friend of his, showed me the English translation of Wild Grass, and asked me to say a few words. Unfortunately I do not know English, and can only say a few words on my own account. But I hope the translator will not mind that I have done only half of what he wished.

These more than twenty short pieces, as noted at the end of each, were written between 1924 and 1926 in Beijing, and published one after another in the periodical Yusi. For the most part they are merely passing small impressions. Because at that time it was difficult to speak plainly, the wording sometimes became rather vague.
Let me give a few examples now. Because I was satirizing the lovelorn poems then in fashion, I wrote "My Lost Love"; because I detested the great number of onlookers in society, I wrote the first piece of "Revenge"; and because I was startled by the dejection of the young, I wrote "Hope." "Such a Fighter" was written out of feeling roused by men of letters and scholars helping the warlords. "Wax Leaf" was written for the sake of those who loved me and wished to preserve me. After the Duan Qirui government fired on unarmed people, I wrote "In the Faint Bloodstains"; by that time I had already gone into hiding elsewhere;奉天派和直隸派軍閥戰爭的時候,作《一覺》,此後我就不能住在北京了。When the Fengtian and Zhili warlord factions were at war, I wrote "An Awakening"; after that I could no longer live in Beijing.
So it may be said that most of these are pale, wretched little flowers on the edge of a decaying hell, and of course they cannot be beautiful. But this hell, too, must inevitably be lost. This is what the expressions and tones of voice of a few heroes, eloquent and ruthless-handed but as yet unsuccessful in their day, told me. So I wrote "The Good Hell That Was Lost."

Afterward, I no longer wrote things of this kind. In an age changing day by day, such writings, and even such feelings, are no longer permitted to exist. I think this may perhaps be a good thing after all. This preface written for the translation should also come to an end here.

What it’s about
Lu Xun's own key to the book, written seven years after the last piece in it. A friend brought him the English translation 馮Y·S· had made of 野草 and asked him for a few words; since he knew no English he could only say a few words about the Chinese, and hoped the translator would forgive him for doing half of what was wanted. The twenty-odd short pieces, he explains, were written in Beijing between 1924 and 1926 and printed one at a time in the weekly 語絲, and are mostly nothing more than passing small feelings — worded vaguely at times, because saying a thing outright was difficult then.
Then he gives the occasions, which is what makes this page worth having. 我的失戀 mocks the lovelorn poetry then in fashion; the first 復讎 came out of his disgust at how many onlookers a society can hold; 希望 out of alarm at how dispirited the young had become; 這樣的戰士 out of watching writers and scholars make themselves useful to warlords; 臘葉 was written for the people who love him and want to preserve him; 淡淡的血痕中 after 段祺瑞's government shot down unarmed civilians, by which time he had gone into hiding elsewhere; 一覺 during the war between the Fengtian and Zhili warlords, after which he could not go on living in Beijing. The collection as a whole he calls pale little flowers along the edge of a run-down hell — and adds that this hell too must be lost, which is what a few eloquent, ruthless and not yet successful heroes told him with their faces and their tone of voice, and what 失掉的好地獄 was written out of. He no longer writes such things: a changing age no longer permits such essays, or even such feelings, and perhaps that is just as well.
When it was written 背景
Dated 5 November 1931 in Shanghai, four years after 北新書局 published 野草, and by a wide margin the latest thing in the book — the translation it was written for never appeared in print. Editions put it in front of everything else, so it is the first page a reader meets, and it is also the easiest: plain expository prose, first person, carrying the dates and the journal name a learner can hang the rest of the collection on. Read it now for the map and again at the end, once the six pieces it glosses are pieces you have actually read. One warning: the titles are not always spelled here as they are spelled at the head of the pieces — the 複仇 of this preface is 復讎 in the table of contents.
