The Pilgrims Return to Tang and Ascend to Buddhahood
第100回Chapter 100
Leaving aside for now how the four pilgrims took their leave, borne aloft on the wind by the Eight Vajra Guardians,卻說陳家莊救生寺內多人,天曉起來,仍治果餚來獻,至樓下,不見了唐僧。let us tell instead of the many people at the Temple of Salvation in the Chen family village, who, when day broke, again prepared fruit and delicacies to offer, and going up to the tower, found that Tang Seng was gone. This one came to ask, that one came to search, all in a flurry, not knowing what to do, crying out in distress, saying, "We have gone and let a living Buddha slip away!" For a while they had no plan, so they carried up to the tower all the offerings they had prepared, and held sacrifices there, burning paper money. Thereafter, every year they held four great sacrifices and twenty-four minor ones. And those who prayed for healing from illness, for safety, for marriage, for the fulfillment of vows, for wealth, or for sons, came at all times, on every day, to burn incense and hold their sacrificial rites. Truly it was: the golden censer never lets its thousand-year fire go out; the jade lamp forever burns bright through ten thousand ages.不題。But of this we speak no further.
Now let us tell how the Eight Great Vajra Guardians raised a second gust of fragrant wind and, within a single day, bore the four pilgrims back to the Eastern Land, until gradually they came in sight of Chang'an. It happened that Emperor Taizong, ever since he had seen Tang Seng off outside the city three days before the fifteenth of the ninth month in the thirteenth year of Zhenguan, had, by the sixteenth year, already sent officials of the Ministry of Works to build the Tower for Welcoming the Scriptures outside the pass at Xi'an. Every year Taizong went in person to that place. It so happened that on this very day his carriage had gone out again and returned to the tower, when suddenly he saw the whole western sky filled with auspicious mists and gust after gust of fragrant wind. The Vajra Guardians halted in midair and called out, "Holy Monk, this is the city of Chang'an. We may not go down there ourselves — the people of this place are too sharp-eyed, and we fear our true forms would be exposed. Nor need the three of you, Great Sage and the others, go down. You yourself go and deliver the scriptures to your sovereign, and then come back at once — I shall wait for you here among the clouds, and we shall return together to report our mission." The Great Sage said, "Your words, honored one, are indeed right, but how could my master carry the scripture-load himself? And how could he lead this horse? We must all go down together to see him off. I beg you to wait a little in the sky — surely we shall not dare delay long." The Vajra Guardian said, "The other day the Bodhisattva Guanyin reported to the Tathagata that the whole journey there and back must take only eight days, so as to complete the full count for storing the scriptures. Now four days and more have already passed, and I fear that Bajie, greedy for comfort and glory, may make us miss the deadline." Bajie laughed and said, "My master is becoming a Buddha, and I too hope to become a Buddha — how could there be any question of greed? You great rough lout! Wait for me here, all of you — once I have delivered the scriptures, I shall come back at once to report and repay your kindness." So the fool shouldered the load, Sha Seng led the horse, and Xingzhe escorted the holy monk, and all of them brought down their clouds and alighted beside the Tower for Welcoming the Scriptures.
Taizong, together with all his officials, saw them at once and went down from the tower to greet them, saying, "Has my imperial brother returned?" Tang Seng at once bowed low to the ground. Taizong raised him up and asked further, "Who are these three?" Tang Seng said, "These are disciples I took on along the way." Taizong was overjoyed and at once commanded his attendant officials, "Fasten together my own imperial carriage-horses, and ask my imperial brother to mount, to return with me to the court." Tang Seng thanked him for the favor and mounted the horse. The Great Sage wielded his gold-banded staff and followed close behind, while Bajie and Sha Seng supported the horse and carried the load, and together they followed the imperial procession into Chang'an. Truly it was as the verse says:
Tang Seng and his three followers accompanied the imperial procession into the court, and throughout the whole city there was no one who did not know that the scripture-seekers had returned.
卻說那長安唐僧舊住的洪福寺大小僧人,看見幾株松樹一顆顆頭俱向東,驚訝道:「怪哉!Now let us tell how the monks of Hongfu Temple in Chang'an, where Tang Seng had formerly lodged, both great and small, saw that the several pine trees there had every one turned their crowns toward the east, and cried out in astonishment, "How strange!怪哉!How strange! There has been no wind at all tonight — how is it that the treetops have all twisted around?" Among them one of Tripitaka's former disciples said, "Quick, fetch our robes — the old master who went for the scriptures has returned." The other monks asked, "How do you know this?" The former disciple said, "When our master was leaving, all those years ago, he once said: 'After I have gone, whether it be three or five years, or six or seven, watch the tips of the pine branches — if they turn to face east, then I shall have returned.' Our master's words are the sacred words of a Buddha's mouth, and so I know it." And he hurried to throw on his robes and go out. By the time he reached the western street, word had already spread that people were saying, "The scripture-seekers have only just arrived — His Majesty has gone out to receive them into the city." When the monks heard this, they hurried on again, and it happened that they met the procession then and there. Seeing the great imperial carriage, they dared not approach, and instead followed along behind all the way to outside the gate of the court.
Tang Seng dismounted from his horse and went in with the others to the court. Tang Seng, together with the dragon horse and the scripture-load, and with Xingzhe, Bajie, and Sha Seng, stood below the jade steps. Taizong summoned his imperial brother to ascend the hall and granted him a seat. Tang Seng again thanked him for the favor and sat down, and had the scripture scrolls brought up. Xingzhe and the others took them out, and the attendant officials passed them up. Taizong asked further, "How many scrolls of scripture are there in all? And how did you obtain them?" Tripitaka said, "Your subject-monk, upon reaching Vulture Peak, had audience with the Buddha, and was graciously granted an escort by the two Honored Ones Ananda and Kasyapa, who first led me into a jeweled tower to be given a vegetarian feast, and then to a jeweled pavilion to be given the scriptures. Those Honored Ones demanded a gift in exchange, and because none had been prepared, none was given them, whereupon they simply handed over the scriptures. We gave thanks for the Buddha's grace and set off eastward, but were suddenly robbed of the scriptures by a demon wind. Fortunately my disciple here had some magic power and pursued them to recover them, though they had all been scattered and flung about. When we opened them to look, they proved to be blank scrolls without a single word. Your subjects were alarmed, and went back again to plead and beg of the Buddha. The Buddha said: When these scriptures were first completed, there was a bhiksu, a holy monk, who took them down the mountain to the household of the Elder Zhao of Sravasti and chanted them through once, thereby protecting the living members of that house in safety and delivering the dead to salvation, and for this he asked only three pecks and three pints of grains of gold, which even then he felt was selling them too cheaply, so that afterward his descendants had no money to use. We, knowing that the two Honored Ones had demanded a gift, and that the Buddha plainly knew it too, had no choice but to offer them the imperially bestowed purple-gold alms bowl, and only then were we given the scriptures with words upon them. These scriptures comprise thirty-five works in all, from each of which a certain number of scrolls were selected and brought back, making five thousand and forty-eight scrolls in all. This number accords exactly with the full count of a Buddhist canon."
Taizong was all the more delighted, and ordered, "Let the Court of Imperial Entertainments set out a banquet in the Eastern Pavilion in gratitude." Suddenly he noticed the three disciples standing below the steps, of most unusual appearance, and asked, "Are these worthy disciples truly men of foreign lands?" The elder monk bowed low and said, "My eldest disciple's surname is Sun, his religious name Wukong — I also call him Sun Xingzhe. He was originally a native of the Cave of the Water Curtain on the Mountain of Flowers and Fruit, in the country of Aolai, in the Eastern Continent of Superior Body. Because five hundred years ago he wrought great havoc in Heaven, he was pinned down and imprisoned by the Buddha in a stone casket at the Mountain of Two Frontiers on the western border, until the Bodhisattva Guanyin persuaded him toward goodness, and he was willing to take refuge in our faith. It was your subject who went there and freed him, and in guarding and protecting me on the journey, I owed a great deal to this disciple. My second disciple's surname is Zhu, his religious name Wuneng — I also call him Zhu Bajie. He was originally a native of the Cave of Cloud Pathway on Fuling Mountain. Because he was working mischief at the Gao family manor in Wusizang, he too was persuaded toward goodness by the Bodhisattva, and it was through Xingzhe's efforts that he was taken in. Along the road he was of great strength in carrying the load, and rendered good service in crossing the waters. My third disciple's surname is Sha, his religious name Wujing — I also call him Sha Monk. He was originally one who wrought mischief in the River of Flowing Sands, and he too was persuaded toward goodness by the Bodhisattva, and took up the teachings of our gate of sand. As for this horse, it is not the one Your Majesty originally bestowed upon me." Taizong said, "Its coat and markings are the same — how can it not be the same horse?" Tripitaka said, "When your subject crossed the water at Eagle's Sorrow Gorge on Serpent Coil Mountain, the original horse was swallowed by this one. Fortunately Xingzhe asked the Bodhisattva about this horse's origin, and it turned out to be the son of the Dragon King of the Western Sea, who, having committed an offense, was likewise saved and reprieved by the Bodhisattva, and made to serve as my mount. At that time he transformed himself into the very likeness of the original horse, with the same coat and markings. Fortunately he climbed mountains and crossed ridges, traveling over rugged and difficult paths, bearing me as my mount on the way there and carrying the scriptures on the way back — I have relied a great deal on his strength as well."
When Taizong heard this, he praised them without end. He asked further, "On so distant a journey to the Western Region, just how great a distance was it in all?" Tripitaka said, "By the Bodhisattva's own words, which I have always kept in mind, it was a full one hundred and eight thousand li. Along the way I never kept count of the distance, and know only that we passed through fourteen full cycles of cold and heat. Day after day it was mountains, day after day it was ridges. Whenever we met a forest it was never small, and whenever we met a river it was broad and vast. We also passed through several kingdoms, each of which gave us a stamped certificate as proof." He said, "Disciples, bring up the travel rescript, to submit it to His Majesty." And it was handed up at once. Taizong looked it over, and saw it had been issued three days before the fifteenth of the ninth month in the thirteenth year of Zhenguan. Taizong said with a smile, "You have labored long on so distant a journey — it is now already the twenty-seventh year of Zhenguan." On the rescript were the seals of the Kingdom of Elephantia, the Kingdom of the Crow-Cock, the Kingdom of Cart-Slow, the Kingdom of Women of Western Liang, the Kingdom of Sacrifice-to-the-Immortals, the Kingdom of Purple-Vermilion, the Kingdom of Bhiksus, the Kingdom Where the Law Was Destroyed, and also the seals of Fengxian Prefecture, Yuhua Prefecture, Jinping Prefecture, and the Kingdom of India. When Taizong had finished reading it, he put it away.
Already the officials on duty were inviting them to the banquet, and so he went down from the hall hand in hand with Tang Seng. He asked further, "Are your worthy disciples versed in courtesy?" Tripitaka said, "My disciples are all beings from mountain villages and wild wastes, unfamiliar with the ceremonies of our sacred Middle Kingdom court — I beg Your Majesty's forgiveness for their offenses." Taizong said with a smile, "I will not blame them, I will not blame them. Let us all go together to the Eastern Pavilion for the banquet." Tripitaka again thanked him for the favor and called his three disciples, and all of them went into the pavilion to look about. Truly it was a great nation of the Middle Kingdom, unlike anything ordinary.
The master and his three disciples, together with the many civil and military officials, all attended in ranks on either side. The Emperor Taizong still sat facing them squarely in the center. Song and dance, pipes and strings, all in perfect order and solemn dignity, and so they enjoyed the pleasures of the whole day.正是:Truly it was:
That day, as evening fell, they gave thanks for the favor and the banquet broke up. Taizong returned to his palace, and the many officials returned to their homes. Tang Seng and the others returned to Hongfu Temple, where they saw the temple monks kowtowing to welcome them. Just as they entered the mountain gate, the monks reported, "Master, the treetops here this morning suddenly all turned to face east. We remembered your words, and so we went out of the city to receive you, and indeed you have arrived." The elder was overjoyed beyond measure, and so went into the abbot's chamber. At this time Bajie no longer clamored over tea and food, nor made any commotion or fuss;行者、沙僧,個個穩重。Xingzhe and Sha Seng too were each of them dignified and composed. It was simply that, their fruit of the Way now complete, they were naturally at peace. That night they went to sleep.
The next morning, Taizong held court, and said to his assembled ministers, "I think that my imperial brother's merit is most deep and most great, and I have nothing with which to repay it. All last night I could not sleep, and composed a few rough lines by mouth to express my humble thanks in some small measure, but I have not yet had them written out." He called, "Let the Secretariat official come — I shall recite it to you, and you shall write it down word for word." The text ran as follows:
When the writing was done, he at once summoned the holy monk. By this time the elder was already waiting outside the court gate to give thanks, and on hearing the summons hurried in and performed the rite of prostration. Taizong had him invited up to the hall, and handed him the written text. The elder read it through, and again went down to give thanks, memorializing, "Your Majesty's writing is lofty and ancient in style, its principles and meaning deep and subtle. But I do not know by what title it is called?" Taizong said, "I composed it by mouth in the night, to express my brother's gratitude — I have named it 'Preface to the Sacred Teachings' — I wonder whether it is fitting." The elder kowtowed and expressed his thanks without end. Taizong further said, "My talents are unworthy of jade tablets, my words are shamed before bronze and stone. As for the inner scriptures of the Buddha, of these I have heard still less. That I should compose by mouth this prefatory text is truly clumsy and unrefined. To sully the golden tablets with my rough brush, to mark the forest of pearls with mere rubble —循躬省慮,靦面恧心。reflecting on myself in this way, I feel shame upon my face and remorse in my heart. It is far from worthy of praise, and I have troubled you in vain with my thanks."
At that time all the officials together offered their congratulations, and paid reverent homage to the imperial text of the Sacred Teachings, which was then spread abroad throughout the realm. Taizong said, "Might my imperial brother recite and expound the true scriptures once, for us to hear?" The elder said, "Your Majesty, if the true scriptures are to be expounded, one must seek out a place of Buddhist purity. The precious hall is not a fitting place for their recitation." Taizong was greatly pleased, and asked the officials on duty at once, "Within the city of Chang'an, which temple is clean and pure?" From the ranks stepped forth the Grand Scholar Xiao Yu, who memorialized, "Within the city there is the Wild Goose Pagoda Temple, which is clean and pure." Taizong at once ordered the many officials, "Let each of you reverently bear a few scrolls of the true scriptures, and accompany me to the Wild Goose Pagoda Temple, to invite my imperial brother to expound the scriptures there."
The many officials accordingly each bore the scrolls, and followed Taizong's carriage to the temple, where a high platform had been raised, laid out in perfect order. The elder then instructed, "Let Bajie and Sha Seng lead the dragon horse and put the luggage in order;行者在我左右。」 let Xingzhe stay at my left and right." He then said further to Taizong, "Your Majesty, if you wish the true scriptures to be handed down and spread throughout the realm, you must first have copies transcribed, before they can be distributed abroad. The original scrolls should still be kept and treasured, and must not be lightly handled." Taizong again said with a smile, "My imperial brother's words are most fitting, most fitting." And he at once summoned the officials of the Hanlin Academy and the Secretariat to transcribe the true scriptures. He also had a temple built to the east of the city, named Tengghuang Temple, the Temple of Transcribed Scrolls.
The elder, bearing a few scrolls, ascended the platform, and just as he was about to begin the recitation, he suddenly heard fragrant winds swirling about, and in midair the Eight Great Vajra Guardians appeared, calling out loudly, "You who recite the scriptures, set down the scrolls and follow us back to the West!" Below, Xingzhe and the other two, together with the white horse, rose up straight from level ground;長老亦將經卷丟下,也從臺上起於九霄,相隨騰空而去。the elder too cast down the scroll he held, and likewise rose from the platform into the ninefold heavens, following the others up into the sky and away. Taizong and the many officials, thrown into alarm, bowed down toward the sky. Truly it was:
When Taizong and the officials had finished their bows, they at once chose eminent monks to hold, right there at the Wild Goose Pagoda Temple, a Great Land-and-Water Mass, reciting the scriptures of the whole canon, to deliver the suffering spirits and sinful ghosts of the nether world, and to bestow blessings and good fortune upon all. The transcribed scriptures were then spread throughout the realm — but of this we speak no further.
Now let us tell how the Eight Great Vajra Guardians, riding the fragrant wind, led the elder and his three disciples, together with the horse, five in all, back once more to Vulture Peak. Going and returning together, it had taken just eight days in all. At this time all the divine beings of Vulture Peak were gathered before the Buddha, listening to his sermon. The Eight Vajra Guardians led the master and his disciples in, and said to the Tathagata, "Your disciples, having earlier received your golden decree, have escorted the holy monk and the others to the land of Tang, delivered the scriptures, and now especially come to report the fulfillment of our mission." And thereupon Tang Seng and the others were called forward to receive their appointments. Tathagata said: "Holy Monk, in your former life you were originally my second disciple, named Master Golden Cicada. Because you did not heed the preaching of the Dharma and treated my great teaching with disrespect, I banished your true spirit to be reborn in the Land of the East. Now I am glad that you have taken refuge, upholding my grace and support, and further, riding upon my teaching, you have gone to fetch the true scriptures — a work of great merit. I therefore raise you to a high rank of true attainment: you shall be the Buddha of Sandalwood Merit. — Sun Wukong, because you greatly disturbed the Heavenly Palace, I used my profound Dharma power to press you beneath Five Elements Mountain; fortunately your heaven-sent tribulation has now run its full course, and you have returned to the Buddhist faith;且喜汝隱惡揚善,在途中煉魔降怪有功,全終全始,加陞大職正果,汝為鬥戰勝佛。 and I am glad besides that you have concealed your evil and made manifest your good, that on the journey you had merit in subduing demons and vanquishing monsters, seeing the task through from beginning to end without fail. I therefore raise you to a high rank of true attainment: you shall be the Buddha Victorious in Strife. — Zhu Wuneng, you were originally Marshal Tianpeng, the water god of the Heavenly River; because at the Peach Banquet you grew drunk and made sport with a celestial maiden, you were banished to be reborn below, your body taking the form of a beast. Fortunately you still cherished a longing for human form; though at Cloud Ledge Cave on Fuling Mountain you committed sins, I am glad that you returned to the great teaching and entered my Buddhist order, protecting the Holy Monk along the way — yet you still harbored a stubborn heart, and your lust and carnal desire were not yet extinguished. Because you had merit in carrying the load, I raise you to a rank of true attainment: you shall be made Altar Cleanser." Bajie called out loudly: "They have all become Buddhas — why am I made only an Altar Cleanser?" Tathagata said: "Because your mouth is bold and your body lazy, and your appetite is vast and wide. Throughout the Four Great Continents of the world, there are a great many who look up to and revere my teaching, and in all Buddhist ceremonies there will be offerings to clear away — I appoint you to cleanse the altars, which is a rank with plenty to enjoy. How is that not good? — Sha Wujing, you were originally the Curtain-Raising General. Formerly, because you shattered a crystal cup at the Peach Banquet, you were banished to the world below, and you fell into the Flowing Sands River, where you took life and devoured men, committing many sins. Fortunately you took refuge in my teaching, sincerely reverent and upholding it, and had merit in protecting the Holy Monk, climbing mountains and leading the horse. I therefore raise you to a high rank of true attainment: you shall be a Golden-Bodied Arhat." He then called to the white horse: "You were originally the son of Guangjin, Dragon King of the Western Ocean; because you defied your father's command, you committed the crime of unfiliality. Fortunately you took refuge in body and in the Dharma, entering my Buddhist order, and day after day it was thanks to you that the Holy Monk was borne westward, and thanks to you again that the sacred scriptures were carried eastward — this too is meritorious. I therefore raise you to a rank of true attainment: you shall be a Heavenly Dragon Horse of the Eight Divisions."
The elder and his four followers all bowed their heads and gave thanks for this grace. The horse too gave thanks for the grace bestowed upon it. Then the order was given for the Guardian to lead the horse down from the rear cliff of Vulture Peak to the edge of the Dragon-Transformation Pool, and to push the horse into the pool. In an instant, the horse gave its body a shake, at once shed its hide and hair, exchanged its head for horns, and grew golden scales all over its body, with silver whiskers sprouting beneath its cheeks and jaws; wrapped in an aura of auspicious vapor, with clouds of good omen about its four claws, it flew up out of the Dragon-Transformation Pool and coiled itself about the sky-supporting ornamental pillar within the mountain gate. All the Buddhas praised the great Dharma power of Tathagata.
Sun Xingzhe then said to Tang Seng: "Master, now that I have become a Buddha, the same as you, surely I need not still wear the golden fillet — must you go on reciting the Tight-Fillet Spell to torment and restrain me? Better recite the Loosening Spell at once, and let me take it off and smash it to bits, so that no bodhisattva or whoever it was may ever again use it to torment someone else." Tang Seng said: "At that time it was only because you were hard to control that I used this method to restrain you. Now that you have become a Buddha, it will naturally disappear of itself — how could it still remain upon your head? Try feeling for it and see." Xingzhe raised his hand and felt for it, and indeed it was gone.
At this time the Buddha of Sandalwood Merit, the Buddha Victorious in Strife, the Altar Cleanser, and the Golden-Bodied Arhat had all attained true fruition in their proper places, and the Heavenly Dragon Horse too had returned to its true form. There is a poem to bear witness to this. The poem says:

What it’s about
The pilgrims return miraculously to Chang'an, where Emperor Taizong receives Sanzang and the scriptures with ceremony. Sanzang presents his travel account, the emperor writes a preface honoring the sacred teaching, and translations begin at Wild Goose Pagoda. After only a brief human interval, the guardians summon the party back to Vulture Peak, showing that their return served to deliver the canon rather than resume their former lives.
The Buddha announces each traveler's reward. Sanzang becomes the Candana-Merit Buddha and Wukong the Victorious Fighting Buddha; Bajie is made Altar Cleanser, Sha Wujing a Golden-Bodied Arhat, and the dragon-horse joins the celestial dragon order. Wukong's tightening band vanishes now that it is no longer needed. The novel closes with titles, praise and a catalogue of awakened beings: the unruly monkey's discipline has become self-command, and the entire company attains a distinct form of completion.
When it was written 背景
The finale binds the Tang court's historical translation project to the novel's fantastic geography. Wild Goose Pagoda evokes the institutional preservation of scriptures, while the immediate ascent keeps worldly recognition subordinate to Buddhist certification. Learners can connect 東土, 御弟, 取經 and 成佛, then compare the five rewards rather than treating them as identical. Bajie's comic office acknowledges appetite redirected into service; Wukong's absent band gives the clearest bodily sign that externally imposed restraint has completed its work.
