The Pilgrims Reach the Buddha and First Receive Wordless Scriptures

098Chapter 98

This tells how, once Squire Kou had been brought back to life, he again arranged banners and pennants, drums and music, and monks, priests, relatives and friends, and saw them off as before — no more of that for now.

Now to tell of Tang Sanzang and his three disciples as they took to the high road; indeed the land of the Buddha in the West was unlike any other place — they saw rare jade flowers and jasper grasses, ancient cypress and hoary pines;wherever they passed, every household inclined toward goodness, every family fed monks;at every mountain foot they saw people cultivating themselves, and among the trees they heard travelers chanting sutras.

Master and disciples journeyed by night and traveled by day, and after another six or seven days they suddenly saw a range of tall buildings and several stories of magnificent pavilions.Truly it was:

:「。」:「Sanzang raised his whip and pointed into the distance, saying, "Wukong, what a fine place." Wukong said, "Master, when you were in those false realms, before those false Buddha images, you insisted on bowing down;?」now that you have reached this true realm, before this true Buddha image, you still have not dismounted — how is that?" At these words Sanzang, flustered, flipped himself off the horse, and by then they had already reached the gate of that tower and pavilion.:「?」Just then they saw a Daoist page standing aslant before the mountain gate, who called out, "Might the one coming be the scripture-seeker from the Land of the East?" The elder hurriedly straightened his robe and raised his head to look.He saw:

:「。」Sun the Great Sage recognized him at once and called out, "Master, this is the Great Immortal Jinding of the foot of Lingshan, come to receive us." Only then did Sanzang come to his senses and step forward to pay his respects.:「The Great Immortal laughed and said, "The holy monk has only just arrived this year — I was fooled by the Bodhisattva Guanyin.Ten years ago she received the Buddha's golden decree and went east to seek the scripture-pilgrim, saying at the time that he would reach my place within two or three years.。」:「。」Year after year I waited, but there was no word at all — I never expected we would only meet this year." Sanzang put his palms together and said, "I am grateful for the Great Immortal's kind intent — my thanks, my thanks." So the four of them led the horse and carried the load, and together entered the abbey. There they exchanged greetings with the Great Immortal one by one.He at once ordered tea to be served and a vegetarian meal laid out.He also told a young page to heat fragrant water for the holy monk to bathe in, so that he might properly ascend to the land of the Buddha.Indeed it was:

Once master and disciples had bathed, before they knew it the sky had darkened, and they rested for the night at Yuzhen Guan.

Early the next morning, Sanzang changed his clothes, put on his brocade cassock, donned his Vairocana hat, took up his monk's staff, and went up to the hall to take leave of the Great Immortal.:「。」The Great Immortal laughed and said, "Yesterday you were in rags, today you are resplendent — seeing you like this, you are truly a son of the Buddha." Sanzang bowed farewell and set off.:「。」:「。」:「。」:「The Great Immortal said, "Wait a moment, let me see you off." Wukong said, "There's no need for you to see us off — old Monkey knows the way." The Great Immortal said, "The way you know is the cloud road; the holy monk has not yet mounted the cloud road, and must go by the ground road." Wukong said, "That is well said.Though old Monkey has made this trip several times, I only ever came and went by cloud, and truly have never set foot on this ground.Since there is a ground road, I must still trouble you to see us along it.。」My master's heart is set firmly on worshipping the Buddha — please do not delay." The Great Immortal, smiling, took Sanzang by the hand and led him toward the Sandalwood Buddha-gate.穿便It turned out this road did not lead out through the mountain gate at all, but simply passed through the central hall of the abbey and out the back gate.:「。」The Great Immortal pointed toward Lingshan and said, "Holy monk, look — that spot amid the sky where auspicious light of five colors and layered clouds of good omen gather is Vulture Peak, the sacred realm of the Buddha." When Sanzang saw it he bowed at once.:「Wukong laughed and said, "Master, this is not yet the place to bow.:『。』As the saying goes, 'The sight of the mountain wears out the horse.' We are still a good distance from that peak — how can you bow already??」:「。」If you bowed all the way to the summit, how many kowtows would that take?" The Great Immortal said, "Holy monk, you and the Great Sage, Tianpeng, and the Curtain-Raiser have already reached the blessed land, and can see Lingshan — I will return now." Sanzang then bowed farewell and departed.

The Great Sage led Sanzang and the others forward, walking slowly and steadily, and they ascended Lingshan. Before they had gone five or six li, they saw a stretch of flowing water, rushing and gurgling with rolling waves, about eight or nine li wide, with no sign of anyone anywhere around.:「Sanzang, alarmed, said, "Wukong, we must have taken the wrong road — could the Great Immortal have pointed us wrong??」:「This water is so wide and so turbulent, and there is no boat in sight — how can we cross it?" Wukong laughed and said, "We're not wrong — look, isn't that a great bridge over there?。」We must cross by walking over that bridge before we can attain the true fruit." The elder and the others went closer to look, and beside the bridge there was a placard, and on the placard were the three characters 'Lingyun Crossing' — it turned out to be a single log bridge.Indeed:

:「。」:「。」:「Sanzang, his heart pounding and his gall quaking, said, "Wukong, this bridge is not for people to walk on — let us find another way." Wukong laughed and said, "This is indeed the way, this is indeed the way." Bajie panicked and said, "This is the way?Who would dare walk it??」:「。」The water is so wide, the waves so surging, and there's just a single log, thin and slippery — how could anyone set foot on it?" Wukong said, "All of you stand back, and watch old Monkey cross it once."

:「。」Splendid Great Sage — he strode out, leapt onto the single-log bridge, and swaying this way and that, in a moment had run across, and from the far side called out, "Come over, come over." Sanzang waved his hand.:「。」:「。」:「。」:「Bajie and Sha Seng bit their fingers and said, "Hard, hard, hard." Wukong ran back across again and pulled at Bajie, saying, "Fool, follow me, follow me." Bajie flopped down flat on the ground and said, "It's slippery, slippery, I can't walk it — spare me, let me ride the wind and mist across instead." Wukong held him down and said, "What kind of place is this, that you should be allowed to ride wind and mist?。」:「。」You must cross by this bridge, and only then can you become a Buddha." Bajie said, "Brother, never mind becoming a Buddha then — truly I cannot walk it." The two of them tussled and pulled at each other by the bridge in play, until Sha Seng went over to make peace, and only then did they let go of each other.

:「。」:「Sanzang turned his head and suddenly saw, in the current downstream, a man poling a boat toward them, calling out, "Ferry across, ferry across." The elder, overjoyed, said, "Disciples, stop your foolish horseplay.。」There's a ferry boat coming." The three of them leapt up and stood still, and together watched; when the boat had come quite close, it turned out to be a bottomless boat.Wukong, with his fiery golden eyes, had already recognized him as the Receiving and Guiding Buddha, also called the Namo Ratnadhvaja Light-King Buddha.:「。」:「。」:「?」:「Wukong did not reveal this, but simply kept calling, "Over here, pole it over here." In a moment the boat had poled up close to the bank, and again the call came, "Ferry across, ferry across." When Sanzang saw it, he was alarmed again and said, "How can this bottomless, broken boat of yours carry people across?" The Buddha said, "This boat of mine—"

:「。──Sun the Great Sage put his palms together and offered thanks, saying, "I am grateful for your kind intent in receiving my master. — Master, get into the boat.。」Though this boat is bottomless, it is steady; even if there are wind and waves, it cannot capsize." The elder was still frightened and doubtful, so Wukong grabbed him by the arm and gave him a shove forward. The master could not keep his footing and tumbled head over heels into the water, but was at once caught and hauled up by the boatman, and stood there on the boat. The master was still shaking out his clothes and stamping the water from his shoes, complaining at Wukong.Wukong then led Sha Seng and Bajie, leading the horse and carrying the loads, aboard as well, and all of them stood on the boat's gunwale. The Buddha gently poled the boat off, and just then they saw a dead body come floating down from upstream. The elder was greatly alarmed at the sight.:「Wukong laughed and said, "Master, don't be afraid.。」:「。」:「!」:「。」That was you, originally." Bajie also said, "It's you, it's you." Sha Seng clapped his hands and also said, "It's you, it's you!" The boatman, chanting a rhythmic call, also said, "That is you — congratulations, congratulations." The three of them joined in together with the same words.Poling the boat, in no time at all, they crossed the Lingyun immortal ferry safe and sound.Sanzang then turned and lightly leapt onto the far shore. There is a poem to prove it.The poem says:

This is truly what is called the vast and great wisdom, the boundless method of reaching the other shore.

When the four of them went ashore and looked back, even the bottomless boat was nowhere to be seen.Only then did Wukong explain that it had been the Receiving and Guiding Buddha.Only then did Sanzang understand, and hastily turning around, thanked his three disciples instead.:「Wukong said, "There is no need for thanks between us — we have supported one another. We, thanks to Master's deliverance, borrowed this gateway to cultivate our merit, and were fortunate enough to attain the true fruit;and Master, too, relied on our protection, upholding the teaching and giving support, and was joyfully freed of his mortal husk.鹿Master, look at this scene before us — the flowers and grasses, pines and bamboo, the phoenixes and cranes and deer of this splendid realm — compared to those places where demons and monsters worked their transformations, which is beautiful and which is vile??」Which is good and which is wicked?" Sanzang thanked him again and again. Each of them, light of body and brisk of step, walked up Lingshan.Soon they caught sight of the ancient Thunderclap Monastery:

Master and disciples, at their ease, walked up to the summit of Lingshan. They also saw, beneath the green pines, ranks of upasakas arrayed, and among the kingfisher-green cypresses, rows of virtuous men in line. :「。」The elder at once made to bow in greeting, which flustered the upasakas, upasikas, bhiksus and bhiksunis, who put their palms together and said, "Holy monk, do not bow yet — wait until you have seen the Muni, and then come back to converse." Wukong laughed and said, "Too soon, too soon — let's first go pay respects to the one on high."

The elder, dancing with joy, followed Wukong straight to outside the mountain gate of Thunderclap Monastery.:「?」:「。」There the Four Great Vajra Guardians met them and said, "Has the holy monk arrived?" Sanzang bowed and said, "Yes, disciple Xuanzang has arrived." Having answered, he was about to go through the gate.:「。」The Vajra Guardians said, "Holy monk, wait a moment — allow us to report before you enter." One of the Vajra Guardians sent word around the mountain gate to report to the Four Great Vajra Guardians at the second gate that Tang Sanzang had arrived;and at the second gate the word was passed on again to the third gate, that Tang Sanzang had arrived. Within the third mountain gate were the divine monks who tended the offerings; when they heard that Tang Sanzang had arrived, they hurried to the Great Hero Hall below and reported to the most honored Tathagata, Sakyamuni Buddha, saying, "The holy monk of the Tang court has reached the treasure mountain, come to fetch the scriptures." The Venerable Buddha was greatly pleased. He at once summoned the Eight Bodhisattvas, the Four Vajra Guardians, the five hundred Arhats, the three thousand Guardian Spirits, the eleven Great Luminaries, and the eighteen Guardians of the Monasteries, and had them arrayed in two rows. Then he issued his golden decree, summoning Tang Sanzang to enter.:「。」Within, tier by tier and rank by rank, in reverent obedience to the Buddha's decree, the call went out: "Let the holy monk enter." Sanzang, following every rule and observance, together with Wukong, Wuneng, and Wujing, led the horse and carried the loads, and went straight in through the mountain gate.Indeed:

The four of them came before the Great Hero Precious Hall and prostrated themselves before the Tathagata.Having bowed, they bowed again to left and right. Each having circled three times all around, they knelt again for a long while before the Buddha, and presented the travel rescript. The Tathagata looked it over, one by one, then handed it back to Sanzang.:「Sanzang bowed his head to the ground in salutation and reported, "Disciple Xuanzang, by the decree of the Emperor of the great Tang of the Land of the East, has journeyed far to this treasure mountain to reverently seek the true scriptures, that all living beings may be delivered.。」:「I beg our Buddha to extend his grace and grant me swift leave to return to my country." Only then did the Tathagata open his mouth in compassion, and with great mercy welling in his heart, said to Sanzang: "That Land of the East of yours is the Southern Continent of Jambudvipa — because there Heaven is high and Earth is thick, its creatures many and its people dense, they are much given to greed and killing, much given to lust and deceit, much given to cheating and fraud;they do not honor the Buddhist teaching, do not incline toward good causes, do not revere the sun, moon and stars, do not value the five grains;滿they are disloyal and unfilial, unrighteous and unkind, they deceive their own hearts and cheat their own consciences, they use false measures — large for buying, small for selling — they take life and slaughter beasts: they have built up boundless sin, until their transgressions are full and their evil overflows, bringing upon them the calamity of hell. And so they fall forever into the shadowed underworld, suffering the many torments of the pestle and mortar and millstone, and are transformed into the bodies of beasts. Many take on the shapes of the fur-clad and horn-crowned, repaying their debts with their bodies and feeding others with their flesh. That they fall forever into the Avici Hell, never to rise again, is entirely for this reason.Although Confucius established there the teachings of benevolence, righteousness, ritual and wisdom, and successive emperors and kings maintained the punishments of exile, strangulation and beheading, yet what can these do against a folk so foolish and unenlightened, so unbridled and unrestrained!I now have the Tripitaka, the scriptures in three divisions, which can deliver them from suffering and dissolve their calamities and sins.Of the Tripitaka: one division is the Discipline, which discourses on Heaven;one division is the Treatises, which expounds on Earth;one division is the Sutras, which delivers ghosts and spirits. In all there are thirty-five works, comprising fifteen thousand one hundred and forty-four scrolls.Truly they are the path of cultivating the truth, the gate of true goodness.Everything in the world's Four Great Continents — astronomy, geography, persons, birds and beasts, flowers and trees, implements and utensils, and human affairs — all without exception is recorded within them.。」:「Since you have come from so far, I would give you the whole of them to take away, but the people of that land are foolish, boorish and stubborn, they slander the true words, and do not understand the profound meaning of our gate of dharma." He then said: "Anuo, Jiaye, you two lead these four to beneath the Hall of Treasures, and first serve them a vegetarian meal.。」Once the meal is done, open the Hall of Treasures, and from within my Tripitaka scriptures, the thirty-five divisions, select a few scrolls from each to give them, so that they may carry them back to spread throughout the Land of the East, forever bestowing this great grace."

The two Honored Ones at once received the Buddha's decree, and led the four of them down to beneath the hall. They could not take in with their eyes all the rare treasures and marvelous jewels, arrayed there without end. They saw the various gods who set out the offerings had laid out a vegetarian banquet, and it was all immortal delicacies, immortal dishes, immortal tea and immortal fruit — dainties of a hundred flavors, unlike anything in the mortal world.Master and disciples paid reverence for the Buddha's grace, and then ate and drank as they pleased. In truth it was:

This time it was Bajie's good fortune, and Sha Seng got the benefit too.At the Buddha's place there were the dishes of true longevity and eternal life, of transformed bones and exchanged embryo, and they ate their fill of them. The two Honored Ones accompanied the four of them until they finished the meal, then went into the Hall of Treasures, opened the doors, and went up to look. There rosy light and auspicious vapors enveloped everything in a thousand layers;colored mists and lucky clouds spread over ten thousand paths. On the scripture cabinets, outside the precious chests, red slips were all pasted on, brush-written in regular script with the titles of the scrolls. They were:

:「Anuo and Jiaye led Sanzang past and showed him all the scripture titles, then said to him, "Holy monk, you have come from the Land of the East all this way — what sort of gifts have you brought us as tokens of regard?。」:「。」:「。」:「。」:「Bring them out quickly, so that we may properly pass the scriptures to you." Sanzang, hearing this, said, "Disciple Xuanzang, the road here was so distant that I was not able to prepare anything." The two Honored Ones laughed and said, "Very good, very good indeed — passing on the scriptures empty-handed for later generations to inherit, and future people will starve to death!" Wukong, seeing them being evasive in speech and unwilling to hand over the scriptures, could not hold back and shouted out, "Master, let's go report to the Tathagata, and have him come hand the scriptures to old Monkey himself." Anuo said, "Don't shout — what sort of place do you think this is, that you would still act wild and make trouble?。」Come over here and receive the scriptures." Bajie and Sha Seng held their tempers in check and persuaded Wukong to stop, then turned to receive the scriptures, packing them scroll by scroll into the bundles, loading them onto the horse, and tying up two more loads besides, which Bajie and Sha Seng carried on shoulder-poles; then they came before the throne, kowtowed, thanked the Tathagata, and went straight out the gate.Whenever they met a Buddha, they bowed twice; He saw a Bodhisattva and bowed twice. He also went to the main gate and bowed to the bhikshus and bhikshunis, the upasakas and upasikas, taking leave of them one by one, then went down the mountain and set off on the road — but no more of that for now.

Now, in that Precious Pavilion there was an ancient Buddha of the Burning Lamp, who had sat in the pavilion secretly listening to the whole business of the scripture-transmission, and he understood it very clearly in his heart: that it was Ananda and Kasyapa who had handed over the wordless scriptures.:「?」:「?」He laughed to himself and said, "The monks of the Land of the East are foolish and deluded, and would not recognize the wordless scriptures — but would that not utterly waste the holy monk's long journey?" He asked, "Who is in attendance here?" And at once the Honored One Bai Xiong stepped forward.:「。」The ancient Buddha instructed him, saying, "Rouse your divine might, fly like a shooting star to catch up with Tang Seng, and seize those wordless scriptures from him, so as to make him come again to seek the true scriptures with words." The Honored One Bai Xiong at once rode a wild wind, rolling out beyond the mountain gate of Thunderclap Monastery, and displayed his divine might to the full. That was truly a fine gust of wind:

Elder Tang was just then walking along when he suddenly heard a fragrant wind rolling by, and supposed it merely an auspicious sign from the Buddha, never once guarding against it.Then he heard a crack, and out of midair a hand reached down and gently snatched away the scriptures loaded on the horse. This so startled Sanzang that he beat his breast and cried out; Bajie rolled on the ground in pursuit; Sha Monk stood guard over the scripture-load; and Sun Xingzhe dashed after it as fast as flying. When the Honored One Bai Xiong saw Xingzhe closing in on him, he feared that the cudgel, being blind to friend or foe, might in the heat of the moment strike and injure his body, so he tore the scripture bundle to pieces at once and flung it down into the dust. When Xingzhe saw the scripture bundle break apart and, moreover, being blown about and scattered by the fragrant wind, he brought his cloud down at once to look after the scriptures, and gave up the chase. The Honored One Bai Xiong withdrew the wind and gathered in the mist, and went back to report to the ancient Buddha — but no more of that for now.

Bajie, who had gone in pursuit, saw the scripture volumes fallen to the ground, and so together with Xingzhe gathered them up and carried them on his back to see Tang Seng. Tang Seng, tears brimming in his eyes, said, "Disciples, even in this Land of Ultimate Bliss there are still fierce demons who dare to work harm." Sha Seng took the loose scriptures he was holding and opened them to look, and found them snow-white, without a single trace of a character.:「。」He hurriedly handed them to Sanzang, saying, "Master, this scroll has no writing on it." Xingzhe then opened another scroll to look, and it too had no writing.Bajie opened one and looked, and it too had no writing.:「。」Sanzang cried, "Open them all and check." Scroll after scroll, all were blank white paper.:「The elder sighed long and deeply, saying, "We people of the Land of the East are truly without fortune — of what use is it to take back such empty, wordless volumes as these? How could I dare face the Tang emperor?。」:「The crime of deceiving one's sovereign is truly one for which death itself would not suffice." Xingzhe had already understood the matter, and said to Tang Seng, "Master, no need to say more — this is the doing of those rascals Ananda and Kasyapa, who asked me for a bribe, and since I had none to give, they deliberately gave us these blank paper volumes to take away.。」:「。」We must hurry back and lodge a complaint before the Tathagata, and demand he punish their crime of extorting money and practicing fraud." Bajie shouted, "Just so, just so! Let's go and report them." The four of them hurried back down the mountain with no good grace in their steps, and in haste turned back up toward Thunderclap once more.

:「?」Before long they arrived outside the mountain gate, and all the assembly there cupped their hands in welcome, saying with a smile, "Has the holy monk come to exchange the scriptures?" Sanzang nodded and offered thanks.殿The Vajra Guardians, too, did not bar the way, but let them pass through, straight up to the front of the Mahavira Hall.:「Xingzhe shouted out, "Tathagata! We, master and disciples, have suffered ten thousand stings and a thousand devils, endless hardship and toil, worshipping our way here from the Land of the East, and relying on the Tathagata's instruction that the scriptures be transmitted to us — yet Ananda and Kasyapa, failing to extort a bribe from us, colluded together in fraud, and deliberately gave us blank white paper volumes to take away. What use would it be for us to take those away?。」:「I beg the Tathagata to order them punished." The Buddha said with a smile, "You need not shout so.As for those two asking you for a bribe, I already know of it.But the scriptures may not be handed down lightly, nor may they be taken away for nothing. On a previous occasion, when the holy bhikshu monks went down the mountain, they once recited these scriptures for the household of Elder Zhao in the country of Sravasti, thereby securing safety for the living of that house and deliverance for the dead, and for that they asked only three pecks and three pints of rice-grains of gold in return.使I said then that they had sold them far too cheaply, leaving their descendants nothing to live on.Now that you have come to fetch them with empty hands, blank volumes were handed over accordingly. As for the blank volumes — these are the true wordless scriptures, and are in fact just as good.。」:「。」But because the beings of your Land of the East are foolish and unenlightened, they can only be transmitted in this form as it is." He then called out, "Ananda, Kasyapa, quickly take the true scriptures with words, select a few scrolls from each canon, and give them to him, then come here and report the count."

The two Honored Ones again led the four pilgrims down beneath the Precious Tower of Treasures, and once more asked Tang Seng for some gift.:「Sanzang, having nothing to offer, at once bade Sha Seng bring out the purple-gold begging bowl, and offered it up with both hands, saying, "This disciple is indeed poor and the road far, and I have not been able to prepare any gift.沿This bowl was bestowed by the Tang emperor's own hand, so that this disciple might use it to beg for food along the way.I now offer it up specially, as a small token of my humble heart.I earnestly hope the Honored Ones will accept it, and when I return to court and report to the Tang emperor, there will surely be generous thanks.。」Only I beg that the true scriptures with words be bestowed upon us, so as not to betray the purpose of the imperial mission, nor the toil of this long journey." Ananda took it, but only smiled faintly.:「。」He was set upon by the strongmen who guarded the Tower of Treasures, the cooks who tended the Fragrant Kitchen, and the Honored Ones who watched over the pavilion — one rubbing his face, another slapping his back, some snapping their fingers, others twisting his lips, all laughing and saying, "Shameless, shameless — demanding a bribe from those who came for the scriptures!" In a moment his face was flushed with embarrassment, yet still he kept hold of the bowl and would not let go.Kasyapa then went into the pavilion to select the scriptures, checking them out one by one to give to Sanzang.:「。」Sanzang then said, "Disciples, all of you look carefully at these, don't let it be like last time." The three of them took the scrolls one by one, checking each as they received it, and this time all were found to have writing on them.In all, five thousand and forty-eight scrolls were transmitted, the full number of one canon.Once everything was neatly packed up, it was loaded onto the horse;what remained filled another load besides, which Bajie carried on a pole. His own bundle Sha Seng carried on a pole.Xingzhe led the horse, Tang Seng took up his tin staff, and after adjusting his Vairocana hat and shaking out his brocade cassock, he went joyfully and happily to stand before our Buddha the Tathagata. It was just as this says:

Ananda and Kasyapa led Tang Seng in to see the Tathagata. The Tathagata ascended high onto his lotus throne, and directed the two great Arhats Subduer of the Dragon and Tamer of the Tiger to strike the cloud-chimes, inviting far and wide the three thousand Buddhas, the three thousand Protectors, the Eight Vajra Guardians, the Four Bodhisattvas, the five hundred Arhats, the eight hundred bhikshu monks, the great assembly of upasakas, bhikshunis, and upasikas, from every heaven and every grotto, every blessed land and numinous mountain, all the great and small Honored Ones and holy monks — those who should sit were invited to ascend to their jeweled seats, and those who should stand attended in waiting on either side.滿In a moment, heavenly music was heard from afar, immortal strains rang out clear, auspicious light layered upon layer filled the sky, and propitious vapors gathered thick upon thick, as all the Buddhas assembled together and paid homage to the Tathagata.:「The Tathagata asked, "Ananda, Kasyapa, how many scrolls of scripture have you transmitted to him?。」:「Report the count one by one." The two Honored Ones at once opened their report: "Just now delivered to the Tang court:

Of the whole canon of scriptures, thirty-five divisions in all, five thousand and forty-eight scrolls were selected out from among them, division by division, and transmitted to the holy monk of the Land of the East, to be kept in Tang.。」All of it is now packed and arranged upon the horse-load and the men's carrying-poles, and they wait only to offer thanks for the grace bestowed."

Sanzang and the four of them tethered the horse, set down their loads, and each with palms joined and body bowed low, made obeisance facing upward.:「The Tathagata said to Tang Seng, "The merit of these scriptures cannot be measured or weighed.Though they are the touchstone of our own gate, they are truly the wellspring of the Three Teachings. When you reach that Southern Jambudvipa of yours, show them to all sentient beings, and let none treat them with disrespect.None may open their pages without first bathing and fasting in purification.Treasure them, hold them in reverence.。」For within them lie the profound mysteries of becoming immortal and attaining the Way, and the wondrous formulas that illuminate the ten thousand transformations." Sanzang kowtowed in thanks for this grace, receiving it in faith to uphold and practice, and once more circled the Buddha in reverence three times, then, holding fast to sincere devotion, took up the scriptures and departed. On reaching the three mountain gates, he gave thanks once more, one by one, to all the assembled sages — but no more of that for now.

Once the Tathagata had seen Tang Seng off, only then did he disperse the assembly gathered for the transmission of the scriptures.:「At his side, Guanyin Bodhisattva then stepped forward, palms joined, and addressed the Buddha, saying, "Your disciple, having in that year received the golden decree to go to the Land of the East to seek out one to fetch the scriptures, has now accomplished the task — fourteen years in all, that is five thousand and forty days, short of eight days still, which does not tally with the number of the canon.西I beg our World-Honored One to grant the holy monk swift return east and back west again, so that within these eight days the number of the canon may be completed in full.。」:「。」 Then permit your disciple to return the golden decree." The Tathagata, greatly pleased, said, "What you say is most fitting; permission is granted to return the golden decree." He at once called the Eight Great Vajra Guardians and instructed them, "You are to exert your divine might at once, escort the holy monk back east, see that the true scriptures are delivered and left there, and then bring the holy monk back west again.。」:「。」This must be done within eight days, to complete the number of one canon in full — see that there is no delay." The Vajra Guardians at once caught up with Tang Seng and called out, "You who fetch the scriptures, follow us." Tang Seng and the others all at once felt their bodies light and vigorous, and, drifting and floating freely, followed the Vajra Guardians, rising up upon the clouds. It was just as this says:

In the end, it is not yet known how the scriptures were transmitted upon returning to the Land of the East; listen to the next chapter's explanation.

What it’s about

The travelers finally reach Vulture Peak. At the crossing called Cloud-Transcending Ferry, a bottomless boat arrives with a figure resembling Sanzang's corpse floating downstream. His disciples tell him not to fear: the discarded body marks release from the mortal shell. They enter the Buddha's presence, bow to the assembled arhats and receive orders that Ananda and Kasyapa hand over the scriptures.

The two attendants ask the pilgrims for a gift. When Sanzang has nothing to offer, they first issue wordless scrolls; the Ancient Buddha Dipankara detects the exchange and sends a disciple to expose it. Returning in shame, Sanzang gives his gold begging bowl and receives scriptures with writing, though not every text in the immense canon. The long quest reaches its object through an unsettling transaction, and enlightenment does not erase the institutional economy surrounding sacred transmission.

When it was written 背景

The corpse at the ferry represents 脫殼, release from an old bodily shell, but the subsequent bargaining prevents the ending from becoming purely ethereal. Ananda and Kasyapa defend the request by recalling that scriptures cannot simply be given without value, while the blank scrolls literalize teaching beyond words and also function as a cheated delivery. The episode deliberately leaves holiness mixed with comedy, exchange and textual materiality.
