第087回Chapter 87

大道幽深，如何消息，說破鬼神驚駭。The Great Way is deep and hidden—how can its workings be known? Once revealed, even ghosts and gods are struck with awe.挾藏宇宙，剖判玄光，真樂世間無賽。It holds the universe within, divides and discerns the mystic light; no worldly joy can rival it.靈鷲峰前，寶珠拈出，明映五般光彩。Before Vulture Peak, the precious pearl is held aloft, shining brightly with fivefold radiance.照乾坤上下群生，知者壽同山海。It illumines all living beings above and below throughout heaven and earth; those who understand it shall live as long as the mountains and seas.

大道幽深，如何消息，说破鬼神惊骇。挟藏宇宙，剖判玄光，真乐世间无赛。灵鹫峰前，宝珠拈出，明映五般光彩。照干坤上下群生，知者寿同山海。

卻說三藏師徒四眾別樵子，下了隱霧山，奔上大路。Now to continue: Tripitaka and his three disciples took leave of the woodcutter, descended Hidden Mist Mountain, and struck out upon the main road.行經數日，忽見一座城池相近。After traveling for several days, they suddenly saw a walled city close ahead.三藏道：「悟空，你看那前面城池，可是天竺國麼？」行者搖手道：「不是，不是。Tripitaka said, “Wukong, look at that city ahead. Could it be the Kingdom of Tianzhu?” The Pilgrim waved his hand and said, “No, no.如來處雖稱極樂，卻沒有城池，乃是一座大山，山中有樓臺殿閣，喚做靈山大雷音寺。Though the Tathagata’s abode is called the Land of Bliss, there is no walled city there, only a great mountain, with towers, terraces, halls, and pavilions upon it; it is called Spirit Mountain, and there stands the Great Thunderclap Monastery.就到了天竺國，也不是如來住處，天竺國還不知離靈山有多少路哩。Even when we reach the Kingdom of Tianzhu, we shall not yet be at the Tathagata’s abode; no one knows how far Tianzhu still lies from Spirit Mountain.那城想是天竺之外郡，到邊前方知明白。」That city is probably an outlying prefecture of Tianzhu. We shall know for certain when we reach it.”

却说三藏师徒四众别樵子，下了隐雾山，奔上大路。行经数日，忽见一座城池相近。三藏道：「悟空，你看那前面城池，可是天竺国么？」行者摇手道：「不是，不是。如来处虽称极乐，却没有城池，乃是一座大山，山中有楼台殿阁，唤做灵山大雷音寺。就到了天竺国，也不是如来住处，天竺国还不知离灵山有多少路哩。那城想是天竺之外郡，到边前方知明白。」

不一時至城外，三藏下馬，入到三層門裡，見那民事荒涼，街衢冷落。Before long they arrived outside the city. Tripitaka dismounted, and after passing through three gates, saw that the people’s affairs were in decay and the streets deserted.又到市口之間，見許多穿青衣者左右擺列，有幾個冠帶者立於房簷之下。When they reached the marketplace, they saw many men in blue robes drawn up on either side, while several officials in caps and girdles stood beneath the eaves of a building.他四眾順街行走，那些人更不遜避。The four travelers proceeded along the street, but none of those people yielded the way.豬八戒村愚，把長嘴掬一掬，叫道：「讓路，讓路。」那些人猛擡頭，看見模樣，一個個骨軟筋麻，跌跌蹡蹡，都道：「妖精來了，妖精來了！」諕得那簷下冠帶者戰兢兢躬身問道：「那方來者？」三藏恐他們闖禍，一力當先，對眾道：「貧僧乃東土大唐駕下拜天竺國大雷音寺佛祖求經者。Zhu Bajie, boorish and simple, thrust out his long snout and shouted, “Make way! Make way!” The people abruptly looked up, and at the sight of him their bones went weak and their sinews numb. Stumbling over one another, they cried, “Monsters have come! Monsters have come!” The officials beneath the eaves were so frightened that they trembled all over; bowing, they asked, “From what place do you come?” Fearing that his disciples might cause trouble, Tripitaka stepped resolutely forward and addressed them: “This poor monk has been sent by the sovereign of the Great Tang in the Eastern Land to worship the Buddha and seek scriptures at the Great Thunderclap Monastery in the Kingdom of Tianzhu.路過寶方，一則不知地名，二則未落人家，才進城甚失迴避，望列公恕罪。」那官人卻才施禮道：「此處乃天竺外郡，地名鳳仙郡。Passing through your honored region, we neither knew its name nor had yet found lodging; thus, on first entering the city, we failed to stand properly aside. We beg your honors to forgive us.” Only then did the officials return his courtesy and say, “This is an outlying prefecture of Tianzhu, called Fengxian Prefecture.連年乾旱，郡侯差我等在此出榜，招求法師祈雨救民也。」行者聞言道：「你的榜文何在？」眾官道：「榜文在此，適間才打掃廊簷，還未張掛。」行者道：「拿來我看看。」眾官即將榜文展開，掛在簷下。We have suffered drought for successive years, and the prefect has sent us here to post a proclamation seeking a master of the arts who can pray for rain and save the people.” Hearing this, the Pilgrim asked, “Where is your proclamation?” The officials replied, “It is here. We have only just swept the gallery beneath the eaves and have not yet posted it.” “Bring it for me to see,” said the Pilgrim. The officials immediately unrolled the proclamation and hung it beneath the eaves.行者四眾上前同看。The Pilgrim and the other three went forward to read it together.榜上寫著：The proclamation read:

不一时至城外，三藏下马，入到三层门里，见那民事荒凉，街衢冷落。又到市口之间，见许多穿青衣者左右摆列，有几个冠带者立于房簷之下。他四众顺街行走，那些人更不逊避。猪八戒村愚，把长嘴掬一掬，叫道：「让路，让路。」那些人猛抬头，看见模样，一个个骨软筋麻，跌跌蹡蹡，都道：「妖精来了，妖精来了！」諕得那簷下冠带者战兢兢躬身问道：「那方来者？」三藏恐他们闯祸，一力当先，对众道：「贫僧乃东土大唐驾下拜天竺国大雷音寺佛祖求经者。路过宝方，一则不知地名，二则未落人家，才进城甚失回避，望列公恕罪。」那官人却才施礼道：「此处乃天竺外郡，地名凤仙郡。连年干旱，郡侯差我等在此出榜，招求法师祈雨救民也。」行者闻言道：「你的榜文何在？」众官道：「榜文在此，适间才打扫廊簷，还未张挂。」行者道：「拿来我看看。」众官即将榜文展开，挂在簷下。行者四众上前同看。榜上写著：

行者看罷，對眾官道：「郡侯上官何也？」眾官道：「上官乃是姓，此我郡侯之姓也。」行者笑道：「此姓卻少。」八戒道：「哥哥不曾讀書。《百家姓》後有一句『上官歐陽』。」三藏道：「徒弟們，且休閑講。After reading it, the Pilgrim asked the officials, “Why is your prefect called Shangguan?” They replied, “Shangguan is a surname; it is the surname of our prefect.” The Pilgrim laughed and said, “That is a rare surname.” Bajie said, “Elder Brother, you have never studied. Toward the end of the Hundred Family Surnames comes the line, ‘Shangguan, Ouyang.’” Tripitaka said, “Disciples, enough idle talk.那個會求雨，與他求一場甘雨，以濟民瘼，此乃萬善之事；Whichever of you knows how to pray for rain should obtain a fall of blessed rain for them and relieve the people’s suffering. That would be an act of boundless merit.如不會，就行，莫誤了走路。」行者道：「祈雨有甚難事？If none of you can, then let us go on and not delay our journey.” The Pilgrim said, “What is difficult about praying for rain?我老孫翻江攪海、換斗移星，踢天弄井、吐霧噴雲，擔山趕月、喚雨呼風：那一件兒不是幼年耍子的勾當？I, old Sun, can overturn rivers and churn seas, shift the Dipper and move the stars, kick heaven and stir the wells, breathe mist and spout clouds, shoulder mountains and drive the moon, summon rain and call the wind—which of these was not a game I played in my youth?何為稀罕？」What is so remarkable about it?”

行者看罢，对众官道：「郡侯上官何也？」众官道：「上官乃是姓，此我郡侯之姓也。」行者笑道：「此姓却少。」八戒道：「哥哥不曾读书。《百家姓》后有一句『上官欧阳』。」三藏道：「徒弟们，且休闲讲。那个会求雨，与他求一场甘雨，以济民瘼，此乃万善之事；如不会，就行，莫误了走路。」行者道：「祈雨有甚难事？我老孙翻江搅海、换斗移星，踢天弄井、吐雾喷云，担山赶月、唤雨呼风：那一件儿不是幼年耍子的勾当？何为稀罕？」

眾官聽說，著兩個急去郡中報道：「老爺，萬千之喜至也。」那郡侯正焚香默祝，聽得報聲喜至，即問：「何喜？」那官道：「今日領榜，方至市口張掛，即有四個和尚，稱是東土大唐差往天竺國大雷音拜佛求經者，見榜即道能祈甘雨，特來報知。」On hearing this, the officials sent two men hurrying to the prefectural offices to report: “My lord, a joy beyond measure has arrived!” The prefect was just then burning incense and praying silently. Hearing the joyful report, he immediately asked, “What joy?” The official replied, “Today, just as we brought the proclamation to the marketplace to post it, four monks appeared. They said they had been sent from the Great Tang in the Eastern Land to worship the Buddha and seek scriptures at the Great Thunderclap Monastery in Tianzhu. On seeing the proclamation, they declared that they could pray down blessed rain, so we came especially to inform you.”

众官听说，著两个急去郡中报道：「老爷，万千之喜至也。」那郡侯正焚香默祝，听得报声喜至，即问：「何喜？」那官道：「今日领榜，方至市口张挂，即有四个和尚，称是东土大唐差往天竺国大雷音拜佛求经者，见榜即道能祈甘雨，特来报知。」

那郡侯即整衣步行，不用轎馬多人，徑至市口，以禮敦請。The prefect at once straightened his clothes and set out on foot. Without sedan chair, horse, or large retinue, he went directly to the marketplace to invite them with due courtesy.忽有人報道：「郡侯老爺來了。」眾人閃過。Suddenly someone announced, “His Excellency the prefect is here!” and the crowd parted.那郡侯一見唐僧，不怕他徒弟醜惡，當街心倒身下拜道：「下官乃鳳仙郡郡侯上官氏，熏沐拜請老師祈雨救民。As soon as the prefect saw the Tang Monk, he showed no fear of his ugly and fearsome disciples, but prostrated himself in the middle of the street and said, “I am Shangguan, prefect of Fengxian Prefecture. Having purified myself with incense and bathing, I respectfully beg the Master to pray for rain and save the people.望師大捨慈悲，運神功，拔濟拔濟。」三藏答禮道：「此間不是講話處，待貧僧到那寺觀，卻好行事。」郡侯道：「老師同到小衙，自有潔淨之處。」I pray that in your great compassion you will exercise your divine powers and grant us deliverance.” Tripitaka returned his courtesy and said, “This is no place for discussion. Once this poor monk has reached a monastery or temple, it will be easier to proceed.” The prefect said, “Master, please come with us to my humble offices, where a clean and suitable place shall be provided.”

那郡侯即整衣步行，不用轿马多人，径至市口，以礼敦请。忽有人报道：「郡侯老爷来了。」众人闪过。那郡侯一见唐僧，不怕他徒弟丑恶，当街心倒身下拜道：「下官乃凤仙郡郡侯上官氏，熏沐拜请老师祈雨救民。望师大舍慈悲，运神功，拔济拔济。」三藏答礼道：「此间不是讲话处，待贫僧到那寺观，却好行事。」郡侯道：「老师同到小衙，自有洁净之处。」

師徒們遂牽馬挑擔，徑至府中，一一相見。The master and disciples accordingly led the horse and carried the luggage straight to the prefectural residence, where they were all formally introduced.郡侯即命看茶擺齋，少頃齋至。The prefect immediately ordered tea and a vegetarian meal to be prepared, and before long the food arrived.那八戒放量吞餐，如同餓虎。Bajie ate and swallowed to the full extent of his appetite, like a starving tiger.諕得那些捧盤的心驚膽戰，一往一來，添湯添飯，就如走馬燈兒一般，剛剛供上，直吃得飽滿方休。The attendants carrying the dishes were terrified. Back and forth they went, adding soup and rice like figures revolving in a lantern; they could barely keep him supplied, and he did not stop until he was completely full.齋畢，唐僧謝了齋，卻問：「郡侯大人，貴處乾旱幾時了？」郡侯道：When the meal was over, the Tang Monk thanked his host and asked, “Your Excellency, how long has this region suffered drought?” The prefect replied:

师徒们遂牵马挑担，径至府中，一一相见。郡侯即命看茶摆斋，少顷斋至。那八戒放量吞餐，如同饿虎。諕得那些捧盘的心惊胆战，一往一来，添汤添饭，就如走马灯儿一般，刚刚供上，直吃得饱满方休。斋毕，唐僧谢了斋，却问：「郡侯大人，贵处干旱几时了？」郡侯道：

行者聽說，滿面喜生，呵呵的笑道：「莫說，莫說。Hearing this, the Pilgrim’s face lit up with delight, and he chuckled, “Say no more, say no more.若說千金為謝，半點甘雨全無；If you speak of a thousand pieces of gold as reward, you will not receive so much as half a drop of blessed rain.但論積功累德，老孫送你一場大雨。」那郡侯原來十分清正賢良，愛民心重，即請行者上坐，低頭下拜道：「老師果捨慈悲，下官必不敢悖德。」行者道：「且莫講話，請起。But if we speak only of accumulating merit and virtue, old Sun will give you a great downpour.” The prefect was in fact thoroughly upright and worthy, with a deep love for his people. He invited the Pilgrim to take the seat of honor, then bowed his head and prostrated himself, saying, “If the Master truly grants us his compassion, I shall never dare act against virtue.” The Pilgrim said, “Enough words for now; please rise.但煩你好生看著我師父，等老孫行事。」沙僧道：「哥哥，怎麼行事？」行者道：「你和八戒過來，就在他這堂下隨著我做個羽翼，等老孫喚龍來行雨。」八戒、沙僧謹依使令，三個人都在堂下。I ask only that you take good care of my master while old Sun attends to the matter.” Sha Monk asked, “Elder Brother, how will you proceed?” The Pilgrim replied, “You and Bajie come here and stand below this hall as my assistants while old Sun summons a dragon to bring rain.” Bajie and Sha Monk obediently followed his orders, and all three stood below the hall.郡侯焚香禮拜。The prefect burned incense and bowed in worship.三藏坐著念經。Tripitaka sat reciting scriptures.

行者听说，满面喜生，呵呵的笑道：「莫说，莫说。若说千金为谢，半点甘雨全无；但论积功累德，老孙送你一场大雨。」那郡侯原来十分清正贤良，爱民心重，即请行者上坐，低头下拜道：「老师果舍慈悲，下官必不敢悖德。」行者道：「且莫讲话，请起。但烦你好生看著我师父，等老孙行事。」沙僧道：「哥哥，怎么行事？」行者道：「你和八戒过来，就在他这堂下随著我做个羽翼，等老孙唤龙来行雨。」八戒、沙僧谨依使令，三个人都在堂下。郡侯焚香礼拜。三藏坐著念经。

行者念動真言，誦動咒語，即時見正東上一朵烏雲，漸漸落至堂前，乃是東海老龍王敖廣。The Pilgrim uttered a true formula and chanted an incantation. At once a black cloud appeared in the eastern sky and gradually descended before the hall. It was Ao Guang, the old Dragon King of the Eastern Sea.那敖廣收了雲腳，化作人形，走向前，對行者躬身施禮道：「大聖喚小龍來，那方使用？」行者道：「請起。Ao Guang drew in the skirts of his cloud, transformed himself into human shape, and came forward. Bowing to the Pilgrim, he said, “Great Sage, for what service have you summoned this little dragon?” The Pilgrim said, “Please rise.累你遠來，別無甚事。I am sorry to have brought you from so far away, but it is for no great matter.此間乃鳳仙郡，連年乾旱，問你如何不來下雨？」老龍道：「啟上大聖得知：我雖能行雨，乃上天遣用之輩。This is Fengxian Prefecture, which has suffered drought for successive years. Why have you not come to send rain?” The old dragon replied, “May the Great Sage be informed: though I am able to make rain, I am one who acts only when dispatched by Heaven.上天不差，豈敢擅自來此行雨？」行者道：「我因路過此方，見久旱民苦，特著你來此施雨求濟，如何推託？」龍王道：「豈敢推託？Without an order from Heaven, how would I dare come here and send rain on my own authority?” The Pilgrim said, “Passing through this region, I saw the people suffering from the long drought, and so I specially summoned you to bring rain and give them relief. Why make excuses?” The Dragon King said, “How would I dare make excuses?但大聖念真言呼喚，不敢不來。But when the Great Sage recited his formula and summoned me, I dared not fail to come.一則未奉上天御旨，二則未曾帶得行雨神將，怎麼動得雨部？For one thing, I have received no imperial decree from Heaven; for another, I did not bring the divine generals who make rain. How, then, can I set the Rain Department in motion?大聖既有拔濟之心，容小龍回海點兵，煩大聖到天宮奏准，請一道降雨的聖旨，請水官放出龍來，我卻好照旨意數目下雨。」Since the Great Sage is resolved to bring relief, allow this little dragon to return to the sea and muster his forces. Meanwhile, please go to the Celestial Palace to obtain approval and secure a sacred decree ordering rain; then ask the Water Officials to release the dragons, and I shall be able to rain precisely the amount commanded in the decree.”

行者念动真言，诵动咒语，即时见正东上一朵乌云，渐渐落至堂前，乃是东海老龙王敖广。那敖广收了云脚，化作人形，走向前，对行者躬身施礼道：「大圣唤小龙来，那方使用？」行者道：「请起。累你远来，别无甚事。此间乃凤仙郡，连年干旱，问你如何不来下雨？」老龙道：「启上大圣得知：我虽能行雨，乃上天遣用之辈。上天不差，岂敢擅自来此行雨？」行者道：「我因路过此方，见久旱民苦，特著你来此施雨求济，如何推托？」龙王道：「岂敢推托？但大圣念真言呼唤，不敢不来。一则未奉上天御旨，二则未曾带得行雨神将，怎么动得雨部？大圣既有拔济之心，容小龙回海点兵，烦大圣到天宫奏准，请一道降雨的圣旨，请水官放出龙来，我却好照旨意数目下雨。」

行者見他說出理來，只得發放老龍回海。Seeing that his explanation was reasonable, the Pilgrim had no choice but to dismiss the old dragon back to the sea.他即跳出罡斗，對唐僧備言龍王之事。He then stepped out of his magic configuration and gave the Tang Monk a full account of what the Dragon King had said.唐僧道：「既然如此，你去為之，切莫打誑語。」行者即吩咐八戒、沙僧：「保著師父，我上天宮去也。」好大聖，說聲去，寂然不見。The Tang Monk said, “Since that is so, go and see to it, but be sure not to make false promises.” The Pilgrim immediately instructed Bajie and Sha Monk, “Protect Master. I am going to the Celestial Palace.” Fine Great Sage! The moment he said “I am off,” he silently vanished.那郡侯膽戰心驚道：「孫老爺那裡去了？」八戒笑道：「駕雲上天去了。」郡侯十分恭敬，傳出飛報，教滿城大街小巷，不拘公卿士庶、軍民人等，家家供養龍王牌位，門設清水缸，缸插楊柳枝，侍奉香火，拜天不題。The prefect asked in fear and trembling, “Where has Lord Sun gone?” Bajie laughed and said, “He has ridden a cloud up to Heaven.” The prefect grew even more reverent. He sent swift proclamations throughout every main street and narrow lane in the city, ordering everyone, whether noble or common, soldier or civilian, to set up a tablet for the Dragon King in every household, place a jar of clear water at every door with willow branches stuck in it, tend incense, and worship Heaven. Of this we shall say no more.

行者见他说出理来，只得发放老龙回海。他即跳出罡斗，对唐僧备言龙王之事。唐僧道：「既然如此，你去为之，切莫打诳语。」行者即吩咐八戒、沙僧：「保著师父，我上天宫去也。」好大圣，说声去，寂然不见。那郡侯胆战心惊道：「孙老爷那里去了？」八戒笑道：「驾云上天去了。」郡侯十分恭敬，传出飞报，教满城大街小巷，不拘公卿士庶、军民人等，家家供养龙王牌位，门设清水缸，缸插杨柳枝，侍奉香火，拜天不题。

卻說行者一駕觔斗雲，徑到西天門外，早見護國天王引天丁、力士上前迎接道：「大聖，取經之事完乎？」行者道：「也差不遠矣。Now the Pilgrim mounted his somersault cloud and went straight to the Western Gate of Heaven. There he saw the Heavenly King, Protector of the Realm, leading celestial soldiers and mighty warriors forward to welcome him. “Great Sage,” he asked, “is the quest for the scriptures complete?” The Pilgrim replied, “It is not far from completion.今行至天竺國界，有一外郡，名鳳仙郡。We have now reached the borders of Tianzhu, where there is an outlying prefecture called Fengxian.彼處三年不雨，民甚艱苦，老孫欲祈雨拯救。No rain has fallen there for three years, and the people suffer greatly. Old Sun wishes to pray for rain and save them.呼得龍王到彼，他言無旨，不敢私自為之，特來朝見玉帝請旨。」天王道：「那壁廂敢是不該下雨哩。I summoned the Dragon King there, but he said he had no decree and dared not act privately; so I have come especially to appear before the Jade Emperor and request one.” The Heavenly King said, “I fear that rain is not ordained for that place.我向時聞得說：那郡侯撒潑，冒犯天地，上帝見罪，立有米山、麵山、黃金大鎖，直等此三事倒斷，才該下雨。」行者不知此意是何，要見玉帝。Some time ago I heard that the prefect flew into a rage and offended Heaven and Earth. The Lord on High found him guilty and set up a mountain of rice, a mountain of flour, and a great golden lock; only when all three are exhausted or broken will rain be ordained.” The Pilgrim did not understand what this meant and insisted on seeing the Jade Emperor.天王不敢攔阻，讓他進去。The Heavenly King dared not obstruct him and let him enter.徑至通明殿外，又見四大天師迎道：「大聖到此何幹？」行者道：「因保唐僧，路至天竺國界，鳳仙郡無雨，郡侯召師祈雨。He went straight to the outside of the Hall of Perfect Light, where the Four Great Celestial Masters came to greet him. “Great Sage, what brings you here?” they asked. The Pilgrim replied, “While escorting the Tang Monk, I reached Fengxian Prefecture on the borders of Tianzhu. There has been no rain, and the prefect invited us to pray for it.老孫呼得龍王，意命降雨，他說未奉玉帝旨意，不敢擅行，特來求旨，以甦民困。」四大天師道：「那方不該下雨。」行者笑道：「該與不該，煩為引奏引奏，看老孫的人情何如。」葛仙翁道：「俗語云：『蒼蠅包網兒──好大面皮。』」許旌陽道：「不要亂談，且只帶他進去。」Old Sun summoned the Dragon King and intended to order him to send rain, but he said that without the Jade Emperor’s decree he dared not act on his own. I have therefore come especially to request a decree and relieve the people’s distress.” The Four Great Celestial Masters said, “Rain is not ordained for that place.” The Pilgrim laughed and replied, “Ordained or not, please announce me and let us see how much favor old Sun commands.” Immortal Elder Ge said, “As the common saying goes, ‘A fly wrapped in a spiderweb—what an enormous face!’” Xu Jingyang said, “Do not talk nonsense. Just take him inside.”

却说行者一驾觔斗云，径到西天门外，早见护国天王引天丁、力士上前迎接道：「大圣，取经之事完乎？」行者道：「也差不远矣。今行至天竺国界，有一外郡，名凤仙郡。彼处三年不雨，民甚艰苦，老孙欲祈雨拯救。呼得龙王到彼，他言无旨，不敢私自为之，特来朝见玉帝请旨。」天王道：「那壁厢敢是不该下雨哩。我向时闻得说：那郡侯撒泼，冒犯天地，上帝见罪，立有米山、面山、黄金大锁，直等此三事倒断，才该下雨。」行者不知此意是何，要见玉帝。天王不敢拦阻，让他进去。径至通明殿外，又见四大天师迎道：「大圣到此何干？」行者道：「因保唐僧，路至天竺国界，凤仙郡无雨，郡侯召师祈雨。老孙呼得龙王，意命降雨，他说未奉玉帝旨意，不敢擅行，特来求旨，以甦民困。」四大天师道：「那方不该下雨。」行者笑道：「该与不该，烦为引奏引奏，看老孙的人情何如。」葛仙翁道：「俗语云：『苍蝇包网儿──好大面皮。』」许旌阳道：「不要乱谈，且只带他进去。」

丘洪濟、張道陵與葛、許四真人引至靈霄殿下，啟奏道：「萬歲，有孫悟空路至天竺國鳳仙郡，欲與求雨，特來請旨。」玉帝道：「那廝三年前十二月二十五日，朕出行監觀萬天，浮遊三界。Qiu Hongji, Zhang Daoling, Ge, and Xu, the four Perfected Ones, led him below the Hall of Divine Mist and memorialized, “Your Majesty, Sun Wukong has reached Fengxian Prefecture in the Kingdom of Tianzhu and wishes to obtain rain for it. He has come especially to request a decree.” The Jade Emperor said, “On the twenty-fifth day of the twelfth month three years ago, We went forth to inspect the myriad heavens and journey through the Three Realms.駕至他方，見那上官正不仁，將齋天素供推倒喂狗，口出穢言，造有冒犯之罪，朕即立以三事，在於披香殿內。When Our carriage reached that region, We saw that the unrighteous Shangguan had overturned the vegetarian offerings laid out for Heaven and fed them to dogs, while uttering filthy words. For this offense against Heaven, We immediately established three things in the Hall of Fragrant Mist.汝等引孫悟空去看：若三事倒斷，即降旨與他；Take Sun Wukong to see them. If all three have been exhausted or broken, We shall issue a decree for him.如不倒斷，且休管閑事。」If they have not, let him cease meddling in matters that do not concern him.”

丘洪济、张道陵与葛、许四真人引至灵霄殿下，启奏道：「万岁，有孙悟空路至天竺国凤仙郡，欲与求雨，特来请旨。」玉帝道：「那厮三年前十二月二十五日，朕出行监观万天，浮游三界。驾至他方，见那上官正不仁，将斋天素供推倒喂狗，口出秽言，造有冒犯之罪，朕即立以三事，在于披香殿内。汝等引孙悟空去看：若三事倒断，即降旨与他；如不倒断，且休管闲事。」

四天師即引行者至披香殿裡看時，見有一座米山，約有十丈高下；The Four Celestial Masters immediately led the Pilgrim into the Hall of Fragrant Mist. There he saw a mountain of rice about a hundred feet high,一座麵山，約有二十丈高下。and a mountain of flour about two hundred feet high.米山邊有一隻拳大之雞，在那裡緊一嘴，慢一嘴，嗛那米吃。Beside the rice mountain was a chicken no bigger than a fist, pecking away at the rice, now quickly, now slowly.麵山邊有一隻金毛哈巴狗兒，在那裡長一舌，短一舌，餂那麵吃。Beside the flour mountain was a golden-haired pug, licking at the flour with its tongue, now stretching it out long, now drawing it back short.左邊懸一座鐵架子，架上掛一把金鎖，約有一尺三四寸長短，鎖梃有指頭粗細，下面有一盞明燈，燈焰兒燎著那鎖梃。On the left stood an iron frame from which hung a golden lock some thirteen or fourteen inches long. Its bolt was as thick as a finger, and beneath it stood a bright lamp whose flame licked at the bolt.行者不知其意，回頭問天師曰：「此何意也？」天師道：「那廝觸犯了上天，玉帝立此三事，直等雞嗛了米盡，狗餂得麵盡，燈焰燎斷鎖梃，那方才該下雨哩。」Not understanding their meaning, the Pilgrim turned and asked the Celestial Masters, “What does this signify?” They replied, “That fellow offended Heaven, so the Jade Emperor set up these three things. Only when the chicken has pecked up all the rice, the dog has licked up all the flour, and the lamp flame has burned through the lock bolt will rain be ordained for that region.”

四天师即引行者至披香殿里看时，见有一座米山，约有十丈高下；一座面山，约有二十丈高下。米山边有一只拳大之鸡，在那里紧一嘴，慢一嘴，嗛那米吃。面山边有一只金毛哈巴狗儿，在那里长一舌，短一舌，餂那面吃。左边悬一座铁架子，架上挂一把金锁，约有一尺三四寸长短，锁梃有指头粗细，下面有一盏明灯，灯焰儿燎著那锁梃。行者不知其意，回头问天师曰：「此何意也？」天师道：「那厮触犯了上天，玉帝立此三事，直等鸡嗛了米尽，狗餂得面尽，灯焰燎断锁梃，那方才该下雨哩。」

行者聞言，大驚失色，再不敢啟奏，走出殿，滿面含羞。At these words, the Pilgrim turned pale with shock. He dared make no further petition, but walked out of the hall with shame written all over his face.四天師笑道：「大聖不必煩惱，這事只宜作善可解。The Four Celestial Masters laughed and said, “Great Sage, there is no need to be distressed. This matter can be resolved only through good deeds.若有一念善慈，驚動上天，那米、麵山即時就倒，鎖梃即時就斷。If a single compassionate thought arises and moves Heaven, the mountains of rice and flour will collapse at once, and the lock bolt will immediately break.你去勸他歸善，福自來矣。」行者依言，不上靈霄辭玉帝，徑來下界復凡夫。Go and persuade him to return to goodness, and blessings will come of themselves.” The Pilgrim followed their advice. Without returning to the Hall of Divine Mist to take leave of the Jade Emperor, he went directly down to the mortal world.須臾，到西天門，又見護國天王。In a moment he reached the Western Gate of Heaven and again saw the Heavenly King, Protector of the Realm.天王道：「請旨如何？」行者將米山、麵山、金鎖之事說了一遍，道：「果依你言，不肯傳旨。The Heavenly King asked, “How went your request for a decree?” The Pilgrim related the whole business of the rice mountain, flour mountain, and golden lock, saying, “It was exactly as you said; he refused to issue a decree.適間天師送我，教勸那廝歸善，即福原也。」遂相別，降雲下界。Just now, when the Celestial Masters escorted me out, they told me to persuade that fellow to return to goodness, and then his blessings would be restored.” Thereupon they parted, and he lowered his cloud to the world below.

行者闻言，大惊失色，再不敢启奏，走出殿，满面含羞。四天师笑道：「大圣不必烦恼，这事只宜作善可解。若有一念善慈，惊动上天，那米、面山即时就倒，锁梃即时就断。你去劝他归善，福自来矣。」行者依言，不上灵霄辞玉帝，径来下界复凡夫。须臾，到西天门，又见护国天王。天王道：「请旨如何？」行者将米山、面山、金锁之事说了一遍，道：「果依你言，不肯传旨。适间天师送我，教劝那厮归善，即福原也。」遂相别，降云下界。

那郡侯同三藏、八戒、沙僧、大小官員人等接著，都簇簇攢攢來問。The prefect, together with Tripitaka, Bajie, Sha Monk, all the officials great and small, and the rest of the people came to meet him, crowding around and pressing him with questions.行者將郡侯喝了一聲道：「只因你這廝三年前十二月二十五日冒犯了天地，致令黎民有難，如今不肯降雨。」慌得郡侯跪伏在地道：「老師如何得知三年前事？」行者道：「你把那齋天的素供，怎麼推倒喂狗？The Pilgrim shouted at the prefect, “It is solely because you offended Heaven and Earth on the twenty-fifth day of the twelfth month three years ago that the common people have been made to suffer, and now Heaven refuses to send rain.” In alarm, the prefect fell to his knees and asked, “Master, how did you learn what happened three years ago?” The Pilgrim said, “Why did you overturn the vegetarian offerings to Heaven and feed them to the dogs?可實實說來。」那郡侯不敢隱瞞，道：「三年前十二月二十五日，獻供齋天，在於本衙之內，因妻不賢，惡言相鬥，一時怒發無知，推倒供桌，潑了素饌，果是喚狗來吃了。Tell me the truth.” The prefect dared conceal nothing and said, “On the twenty-fifth day of the twelfth month three years ago, we presented offerings and held a vegetarian rite for Heaven here in the prefectural residence. Because my wife was lacking in virtue and quarreled with me in bitter words, I flew into a senseless rage, overturned the offering table, and spilled the vegetarian dishes. It is true that I called dogs to eat them.這兩年憶念在心，神思恍惚，無處可以解釋。For the past two years the memory has weighed on my mind, leaving my thoughts distracted, yet I had nowhere to explain or atone for it.不知上天見罪，遺害黎民。I did not know that Heaven had found me guilty and brought harm upon the common people.今遇老師降臨，萬望明示，上界怎麼樣計較？」行者道：「那一日正是玉皇下界之日，見你將齋供喂狗，又口出穢言，玉帝即立三事記汝。」八戒問道：「是甚三事？」行者道：「披香殿立一座米山，約有十丈高下；Now that the Master has descended among us, I beg you to explain clearly how the upper realm intends to deal with me.” The Pilgrim said, “That very day the Jade Emperor happened to descend to the mortal world. He saw you feed the sacred offerings to dogs and heard you utter filthy words, and he at once set up three things as a record against you.” Bajie asked, “What three things?” The Pilgrim replied, “In the Hall of Fragrant Mist stands a mountain of rice about a hundred feet high,一座麵山，約有二十丈高下。and a mountain of flour about two hundred feet high.米山邊有拳大的一隻小雞，在那裡緊一嘴、慢一嘴的，嗛那米吃；Beside the rice mountain is a little chicken no bigger than a fist, pecking at the rice, now quickly, now slowly;麵山邊有一個金毛哈巴狗兒，在那裡長一舌、短一舌的，餂那麵吃。beside the flour mountain is a golden-haired pug, licking at the flour with its tongue, now stretching it out long, now drawing it back short.左邊又一座鐵架子，架上掛一把黃金大鎖，鎖梃兒有指頭粗細。On the left there is also an iron frame, with a great golden lock hanging from it, whose bolt is as thick as a finger.下面有一盞明燈，燈焰兒燎著那鎖梃。Beneath it stands a bright lamp, whose flame licks at the lock bolt.直等那雞嗛米盡，狗餂麵盡，燈燎斷鎖梃，他這裡方才該下雨哩。」八戒笑道：「不打緊，不打緊。Only when the chicken has pecked up all the rice, the dog has licked up all the flour, and the lamp has burned through the lock bolt will rain be ordained here.” Bajie laughed and said, “That is no great matter, no great matter.哥哥肯帶我去，變出法身來，一頓把他的米麵都吃了，鎖梃弄斷了，管取下雨。」行者道：「獃子莫胡說。If Elder Brother will take me there, I shall manifest my giant body, eat up all their rice and flour in one sitting, and break the lock bolt. Then rain is certain to fall.” The Pilgrim said, “Idiot, do not talk nonsense.此乃上天所設之計，你怎麼得見？」三藏道：「似這等說，怎生是好？」行者道：「不難，不難。Those are devices established by Heaven. How could you even get to see them?” Tripitaka asked, “If that is so, what are we to do?” The Pilgrim replied, “It is not difficult, not difficult.我臨行時，四天師曾對我言，但只作善可解。」那郡侯拜伏在地，哀告道：「但憑老師指教，下官一一皈依也。」行者道：「你若回心向善，趁早念佛看經，我還替你作為；When I left, the Four Celestial Masters told me that the matter could be resolved simply by doing good.” The prefect prostrated himself and pleaded sorrowfully, “Whatever the Master instructs, I shall submit to it in every particular.” The Pilgrim said, “If you turn your heart toward goodness, begin at once to invoke the Buddha and read the scriptures, and I shall still act on your behalf.汝若仍前不改，我亦不能解釋，不久天即誅之，性命不能保矣。」But if you remain as before and refuse to reform, even I cannot resolve the matter. Before long Heaven will strike you down, and your life will not be preserved.”

那郡侯磕頭禮拜，誓願皈依。The prefect knocked his head upon the ground in worship and vowed to take refuge in the faith.當時召請本處僧道，啟建道場，各各寫發文書，申奏三天。He immediately summoned the local Buddhist and Daoist clergy to establish ritual sanctuaries, and each prepared documents to memorialize the Three Heavens.郡侯領眾拈香瞻拜，答天謝地，引罪自責。The prefect led the people in offering incense and bowing in worship, thanking Heaven and Earth while confessing his guilt and reproaching himself.三藏也與他念經。Tripitaka also recited scriptures for him.一壁廂又出飛報，教城裡城外大家小戶，不論男女人等，都要燒香念佛。At the same time, swift proclamations were issued ordering every household, great or small, within and outside the city, and every man and woman without exception, to burn incense and invoke the Buddha.自此時，一片善聲盈耳。From that moment, voices of goodness filled the air.行者卻才歡喜，對八戒、沙僧道：「你兩個好生護持師父，等老孫再與他去去來。」八戒道：「哥哥又往那裡去？」行者道：「這郡侯聽信老孫之言，果然受教，恭敬善慈，誠心念佛。Only then was the Pilgrim pleased. He said to Bajie and Sha Monk, “Take good care of Master while old Sun makes one more quick journey.” Bajie asked, “Where are you going now, Elder Brother?” The Pilgrim replied, “The prefect has believed old Sun’s words and truly accepted instruction. He is reverent and compassionate and is invoking the Buddha with a sincere heart.我這去再奏玉帝，求些雨來。」沙僧道：「哥哥既要去，不必遲疑，且耽擱我們行路。I shall go and petition the Jade Emperor once more, to obtain some rain.” Sha Monk said, “Since you mean to go, Elder Brother, do not delay, for this is holding up our journey.必求雨一壇，庶成我們之正果也。」You must obtain one full rite’s worth of rain, so that our own true attainment may thereby be brought to fulfillment.”

那郡侯磕头礼拜，誓愿皈依。当时召请本处僧道，启建道场，各各写发文书，申奏三天。郡侯领众拈香瞻拜，答天谢地，引罪自责。三藏也与他念经。一壁厢又出飞报，教城里城外大家小户，不论男女人等，都要烧香念佛。自此时，一片善声盈耳。行者却才欢喜，对八戒、沙僧道：「你两个好生护持师父，等老孙再与他去去来。」八戒道：「哥哥又往那里去？」行者道：「这郡侯听信老孙之言，果然受教，恭敬善慈，诚心念佛。我这去再奏玉帝，求些雨来。」沙僧道：「哥哥既要去，不必迟疑，且耽搁我们行路。必求雨一坛，庶成我们之正果也。」

好大聖，又縱雲頭，直至天門外，還遇著護國天王。Fine Great Sage! Once again he rose upon his cloud and went straight to the Gate of Heaven, where he met the Heavenly King, Protector of the Realm, once more.天王道：「你今又來做甚？」行者道：「那郡侯已歸善矣。」天王亦喜。The Heavenly King asked, “What have you come for now?” The Pilgrim replied, “The prefect has returned to goodness.” The Heavenly King was pleased as well.正說處，早見直符使者捧定了道家文書、僧家關牒，到天門外傳遞。As they spoke, they saw a Talismanic Messenger arrive at the Gate of Heaven carrying Daoist memorials and Buddhist documents for delivery.那符使見了行者，施禮道：「此意乃大聖勸善之功。」行者道：「你將此文牒送去何處？」符使道：「直送至通明殿上，與天師傳遞到玉皇大天尊前。」行者道：「如此，你先行，我當隨後而去。」那符使入天門去了。When the messenger saw the Pilgrim, he saluted and said, “This has all come about through the Great Sage’s work of exhorting them to goodness.” The Pilgrim asked, “Where are you taking these documents?” The messenger replied, “Straight to the Hall of Perfect Light, where the Celestial Masters will transmit them to the Jade Emperor, the Great Heavenly Worthy.” The Pilgrim said, “In that case, go on ahead; I shall follow after you.” The messenger entered the Gate of Heaven.護國天王道：「大聖，不消見玉帝了。The Heavenly King, Protector of the Realm, said, “Great Sage, there is no need to see the Jade Emperor.你只往九天應元府下借點雷神，徑自聲雷掣電，還他就有雨下也。」Go directly to the Palace of Primordial Response of the Nine Heavens and borrow a few thunder gods. Once they sound the thunder and flash the lightning, rain will fall there.”

好大圣，又纵云头，直至天门外，还遇著护国天王。天王道：「你今又来做甚？」行者道：「那郡侯已归善矣。」天王亦喜。正说处，早见直符使者捧定了道家文书、僧家关牒，到天门外传递。那符使见了行者，施礼道：「此意乃大圣劝善之功。」行者道：「你将此文牒送去何处？」符使道：「直送至通明殿上，与天师传递到玉皇大天尊前。」行者道：「如此，你先行，我当随后而去。」那符使入天门去了。护国天王道：「大圣，不消见玉帝了。你只往九天应元府下借点雷神，径自声雷掣电，还他就有雨下也。」

真個行者依言，入天門裡，不上靈霄殿求請旨意，轉雲步，徑往九天應元府，見那雷門使者、糾錄典者、廉訪典者都來迎著，施禮道：「大聖何來？」行者道：「有事要見天尊。」三使者即為傳奏。The Pilgrim followed his advice. He entered the Gate of Heaven but did not go up to the Hall of Divine Mist to request a decree. Turning his cloud-path, he went straight to the Palace of Primordial Response of the Nine Heavens. There the Messenger of the Thunder Gate, the Registrar of Corrections, and the Inspector-Registrar all came to meet him and saluted, saying, “What brings the Great Sage here?” The Pilgrim replied, “I have business with the Heavenly Worthy.” The three messengers immediately went in to announce him.天尊隨下九鳳丹霞之扆，整衣出迎。The Heavenly Worthy at once descended from his nine-phoenix throne-screen of crimson clouds, straightened his robes, and came out to welcome him.相見禮畢，行者道：「有一事特來奉求。」天尊道：「何事？」行者道：「我因保唐僧至鳳仙郡，見那乾旱之甚，已許他求雨，特來告借貴部官將到彼聲雷。」天尊道：「我知那郡侯冒犯上天，立有三事，不知可該下雨哩？」行者笑道：「我昨日已見玉帝請旨。When their greetings were concluded, the Pilgrim said, “I have come especially to ask a favor.” The Heavenly Worthy asked, “What favor?” The Pilgrim replied, “While escorting the Tang Monk, I reached Fengxian Prefecture and saw how terribly it suffered from drought. I have already promised to obtain rain for them, and so have come especially to ask the loan of officers and generals from your honored department to sound thunder there.” The Heavenly Worthy said, “I know that the prefect offended Heaven and that three things were set up against him, but I do not know whether rain is yet ordained.” The Pilgrim laughed and said, “Yesterday I appeared before the Jade Emperor to request a decree.玉帝著天師引我去披香殿看那三事，乃是米山、麵山、金鎖，只要三事倒斷，方該下雨。The Jade Emperor ordered the Celestial Masters to take me to the Hall of Fragrant Mist to see the three things: a mountain of rice, a mountain of flour, and a golden lock. Only when all three were exhausted or broken would rain be ordained.我愁難得倒斷，天師教我勸化郡侯等眾作善，以為人有善念，天必從之。I despaired of their ever being exhausted or broken, but the Celestial Masters told me to exhort the prefect and his people to perform good deeds, for when human beings harbor good thoughts, Heaven is sure to follow them.庶幾可以回天心，解災難也。In this way, perhaps Heaven’s heart might be turned and the calamity relieved.今已善念頓生，善聲盈耳。Now good thoughts have suddenly arisen, and voices of goodness fill the air.適間直符使者已將改行從善的文牒奏上玉帝去了，老孫因特造尊府，告借雷部官將相助相助。」天尊道：「既如此，差鄧、辛、張、陶，帥領閃電娘子，即隨大聖下降鳳仙郡聲雷。」A moment ago, the Talismanic Messenger carried their documents attesting to their reform and return to goodness up to the Jade Emperor. Old Sun has therefore come especially to your honored palace to ask for the loan of officers and generals from the Thunder Department to lend us their aid.” The Heavenly Worthy said, “Since that is so, I shall dispatch Deng, Xin, Zhang, and Tao, together with the Lady of Lightning, to descend at once with the Great Sage to Fengxian Prefecture and sound the thunder.”

真个行者依言，入天门里，不上灵霄殿求请旨意，转云步，径往九天应元府，见那雷门使者、纠录典者、廉访典者都来迎著，施礼道：「大圣何来？」行者道：「有事要见天尊。」三使者即为传奏。天尊随下九凤丹霞之扆，整衣出迎。相见礼毕，行者道：「有一事特来奉求。」天尊道：「何事？」行者道：「我因保唐僧至凤仙郡，见那干旱之甚，已许他求雨，特来告借贵部官将到彼声雷。」天尊道：「我知那郡侯冒犯上天，立有三事，不知可该下雨哩？」行者笑道：「我昨日已见玉帝请旨。玉帝著天师引我去披香殿看那三事，乃是米山、面山、金锁，只要三事倒断，方该下雨。我愁难得倒断，天师教我劝化郡侯等众作善，以为人有善念，天必从之。庶几可以回天心，解灾难也。今已善念顿生，善声盈耳。适间直符使者已将改行从善的文牒奏上玉帝去了，老孙因特造尊府，告借雷部官将相助相助。」天尊道：「既如此，差邓、辛、张、陶，帅领闪电娘子，即随大圣下降凤仙郡声雷。」

那四將同大聖不多時，至於鳳仙境界，即於半空中作起法來。The four generals and the Great Sage soon reached the territory of Fengxian, where they began working their magic in midair.只聽得唿����的雷聲，又見那淅瀝瀝的閃電。All at once there came rumbling, crashing peals of thunder, and flickering, flashing bolts of lightning appeared.真個是：Truly:

那四将同大圣不多时，至于凤仙境界，即于半空中作起法来。只听得唿𡃤𡃤的雷声，又见那淅沥沥的闪电。真个是：

那鳳仙郡城裡城外，大小官員，軍民人等，整三年不曾聽見雷電；Within and outside the city of Fengxian, all the officials great and small, the soldiers, civilians, and all the rest had not heard thunder or seen lightning for three full years;今日見有雷聲霍閃，一齊跪下，頭頂著香爐，有的手拈著柳枝，都念：「南無阿彌陀佛！Today, when they saw the lightning flash and heard the thunder, they all knelt down, some balancing incense burners on their heads and others holding willow sprigs, and all recited, “Namo Amituofo!南無阿彌陀佛！」這一聲善念，果然驚動上天。Namo Amituofo!” This single pious invocation did indeed move Heaven.正是那古詩云：Just as the old poem says:

那凤仙郡城里城外，大小官员，军民人等，整三年不曾听见雷电；今日见有雷声霍闪，一齐跪下，头顶著香炉，有的手拈著柳枝，都念：「南无阿弥陀佛！南无阿弥陀佛！」这一声善念，果然惊动上天。正是那古诗云：

且不說孫大聖指揮雷將，掣電轟雷於鳳仙郡，人人歸善。For the moment, let us not speak of how Sun Dasheng commanded the thunder generals to flash lightning and peal thunder over Fengxian Prefecture, so that everyone turned to goodness.卻說那上界直符使者將僧、道兩家的文牒送至通明殿，四天師傳奏靈霄殿。Instead, we shall tell how the Messenger of the Direct Talisman in the upper realm delivered the memorials of the Buddhist and Daoist clergy to the Tongming Palace, where the Four Celestial Masters transmitted them to the Lingxiao Palace.玉帝見了道：「那廝們既有善念，看三事如何？」正說處，忽有披香殿看管的將官報道：「所立米、麵山俱倒了，霎時間米、麵皆無，鎖梃亦斷。」奏未畢，又有當駕天官引鳳仙郡土地、城隍、社令等神齊來拜奏道：「本郡郡主並滿城大小黎庶之家，無一家一人不皈依善果，禮佛敬天。When the Jade Emperor saw them, he said, “Since those wretches have conceived good thoughts, let us see how the three things stand.” Even as he spoke, an officer charged with guarding the Pixiang Palace reported, “The mountains of rice and flour that were set up have both collapsed; in an instant all the rice and flour vanished, and the bar of the lock has broken as well.” Before he had finished reporting, a celestial officer in attendance brought in the local Earth God, City God, Altar Warden, and other deities of Fengxian Prefecture, who all bowed and memorialized: “From the prefect himself down to every great and small household among the common people of the city, there is not one family or person who has not embraced the fruits of goodness, revering the Buddha and honoring Heaven.今啟垂慈，普降甘雨，求濟黎民。」玉帝聞言大喜，即傳旨：「著風部、雲部、雨部各遵號令，去下方，按鳳仙郡界，即於今日今時，聲雷佈雲，降雨三尺零四十二點。」時有四大天師奉旨，傳與各部隨時下界，各逞神威，一齊振作。We now beg Your Majesty to bestow compassion, send down sweet rain everywhere, and save the common people.” The Jade Emperor was overjoyed to hear this and at once issued a decree: “Let the Departments of Wind, Cloud, and Rain each obey their orders, descend to the lower world, and over the bounds of Fengxian Prefecture, on this very day and at this very hour, sound the thunder, spread the clouds, and send down three chi and forty-two drops of rain.” The Four Great Celestial Masters received the decree and transmitted it to the several departments, which immediately descended to the mortal realm, each displaying its divine power as all sprang into action together.

行者正與鄧、辛、張、陶令閃電娘子在空中調弄，只見眾神都到，合會一天。Xingzhe was in midair directing Deng, Xin, Zhang, Tao, and the Lady of Lightning when he saw all the other gods arrive, filling the whole sky in assembly.那其間風雲際會，甘雨滂沱。Then wind and cloud came together, and the blessed rain poured down in torrents.好雨：What excellent rain it was:

行者正与邓、辛、张、陶令闪电娘子在空中调弄，只见众神都到，合会一天。那其间风云际会，甘雨滂沱。好雨：

一日雨下足了三尺零四十二點，眾神祗漸漸收回。In a single day, a full three chi and forty-two drops of rain fell, and the assembled deities gradually withdrew.孫大聖厲聲高叫道：「那四部眾神，且暫停雲從，待老孫去叫郡侯拜謝列位。Sun Dasheng cried out sternly, “Gods of the four departments, halt your cloud-borne retinues for a moment, while old Sun goes to summon the prefect to offer you his thanks.列位可撥開雲霧，各現真身，與這凡夫親眼看看，他才信心供奉也。」眾神聽說，只得都停在空中。Please part the clouds and mist and each reveal your true form, so that these mortals may see you with their own eyes; only then will they worship you with true faith.” Hearing this, the gods had no choice but to remain in the sky.

一日雨下足了三尺零四十二点，众神祗渐渐收回。孙大圣厉声高叫道：「那四部众神，且暂停云从，待老孙去叫郡侯拜谢列位。列位可拨开云雾，各现真身，与这凡夫亲眼看看，他才信心供奉也。」众神听说，只得都停在空中。

這行者按落雲頭，徑至郡裡，早見三藏、八戒、沙僧都來迎接；Xingzhe lowered his cloud and went straight into the prefectural city, where he found Sanzang, Bajie, and Sha Seng already coming to meet him;那郡侯一步一拜來謝。the prefect approached as well, bowing at every step to give thanks.行者道：「且慢謝我。Xingzhe said, “Do not thank me just yet.我已留住四部神祗，你可傳召多人同此拜謝，教他向後好來降雨。」郡侯隨傳飛報，召眾同酬，都一個個拈香朝拜。I have kept the gods of the four departments here. Summon a great many people to thank them together, so that in future they will be willing to come and send down rain.” The prefect immediately dispatched swift messengers, calling everyone to offer thanks together, and one by one they took incense and bowed in worship.只見那四部神祗開明雲霧，各現真身。Then the gods of the four departments cleared away the clouds and mist and each revealed his true form.四部者，乃雨部、雷部、雲部、風部。The four departments were those of Rain, Thunder, Cloud, and Wind.只見那：And there appeared:

这行者按落云头，径至郡里，早见三藏、八戒、沙僧都来迎接；那郡侯一步一拜来谢。行者道：「且慢谢我。我已留住四部神祗，你可传召多人同此拜谢，教他向后好来降雨。」郡侯随传飞报，召众同酬，都一个个拈香朝拜。只见那四部神祗开明云雾，各现真身。四部者，乃雨部、雷部、云部、风部。只见那：

眾神祗寧待了一個時辰，人民拜之不已。The assembled deities waited patiently for a full two hours, while the people bowed to them without cease.孫行者又起在雲端，對眾作禮道：「有勞，有勞。Sun Xingzhe rose once more into the clouds and saluted them all, saying, “Many thanks for your trouble, many thanks indeed.請列位各歸本部。I ask you all now to return to your respective departments.老孫還教郡界中人家供養高真，遇時節醮謝。Old Sun will instruct the households throughout the prefecture to make offerings to the exalted immortals and hold rites of thanksgiving on the appointed festivals.列位從此後，五日一風，十日一雨，還來拯救拯救。」眾神依言，各各轉部不題。From now on, good sirs, send wind every five days and rain every ten, and continue to bring them aid.” The gods agreed, and each returned to his own department; of this we shall say no more.

众神祗宁待了一个时辰，人民拜之不已。孙行者又起在云端，对众作礼道：「有劳，有劳。请列位各归本部。老孙还教郡界中人家供养高真，遇时节醮谢。列位从此后，五日一风，十日一雨，还来拯救拯救。」众神依言，各各转部不题。

卻說大聖墜落雲頭，與三藏道：「事畢民安，可收拾走路矣。」那郡侯聞言，急忙行禮道：「孫老爺說那裡話。Dasheng then descended from the clouds and said to Sanzang, “The matter is settled and the people are safe; we may pack our things and continue our journey.” Hearing this, the prefect hurriedly bowed and said, “How can Master Sun speak so?今此一場，乃無量無邊之恩德。What you have done for us today is a boundless and immeasurable act of grace.下官這裡差人辦備小宴，奉答厚恩。I have sent men to prepare a modest banquet as some small recompense for your great kindness.仍買治民間田地，與老爺起建寺院，立老爺生祠，勒碑刻名，四時享祀。I shall also purchase fields from among the people, build a monastery for you, erect a shrine in your honor while you yet live, and carve your names upon a stone tablet, so that sacrifices may be offered in all four seasons.雖刻骨鏤心，難報萬一，怎麼就說走路的話？」三藏道：「大人之言雖當，但我等乃西方掛搭行腳之僧，不敢久住，一二日間，定走無疑。」那郡侯那裡肯放，連夜差多人治辦酒席，起蓋祠宇。Even if we engraved your kindness upon our bones and carved it into our hearts, we could not repay one ten-thousandth of it. How can you speak of leaving at once?” Sanzang said, “Though what Your Excellency says is fitting, we are wandering monks bound for the West, seeking lodging wherever we go, and dare not remain long. Within a day or two we must certainly depart.” But the prefect would not hear of letting them go and that very night sent many men to prepare the feast and construct the shrine.

却说大圣坠落云头，与三藏道：「事毕民安，可收拾走路矣。」那郡侯闻言，急忙行礼道：「孙老爷说那里话。今此一场，乃无量无边之恩德。下官这里差人办备小宴，奉答厚恩。仍买治民间田地，与老爷起建寺院，立老爷生祠，勒碑刻名，四时享祀。虽刻骨镂心，难报万一，怎么就说走路的话？」三藏道：「大人之言虽当，但我等乃西方挂搭行脚之僧，不敢久住，一二日间，定走无疑。」那郡侯那里肯放，连夜差多人治办酒席，起盖祠宇。

次日，大開佳宴，請唐僧高坐，孫大聖與八戒、沙僧列坐。The next day, a splendid banquet was spread; Tang Seng was invited to take the seat of honor, while Sun Dasheng, Bajie, and Sha Seng sat in order beside him.郡侯同本郡大小官員部臣把杯獻饌，細吹細打，款待了一日。The prefect and all the officials and subordinates of the prefecture offered them wine and delicacies, while soft pipes and gentle drums played, and entertained them for the whole day.這場果是欣然。It was truly a joyous occasion.有詩為證：There is a poem as proof:

次日，大开佳宴，请唐僧高坐，孙大圣与八戒、沙僧列坐。郡侯同本郡大小官员部臣把杯献馔，细吹细打，款待了一日。这场果是欣然。有诗为证：

一日筵，二日宴；One day a feast, the next a banquet;今日酬，明日謝。Thanks today, requital tomorrow.扳留將有半月，只等寺院生祠完備。They kept the pilgrims there for nearly half a month, waiting only for the monastery and living shrine to be completed.一日，郡侯請四眾往觀。One day, the prefect invited the four pilgrims to inspect them.唐僧驚訝道：「功程浩大，何成之如此速耶？」郡侯道：「下官催趲人工，晝夜不息，急急命完，特請列位老爺看看。」行者笑道：「果是賢才能幹的好賢侯也。」即時都到新寺，見那殿閣巍峨，山門壯麗，俱稱贊不已。Tang Seng exclaimed in astonishment, “This is a vast undertaking—how was it completed so swiftly?” The prefect replied, “I pressed the workmen on without rest by day or night and ordered them to finish with all haste, expressly so that I might invite you honored masters to inspect it.” Xingzhe laughed and said, “You truly are a worthy, able, and virtuous prefect!” They then went together to the new monastery, where they saw lofty halls and pavilions and a magnificent mountain gate, all of which they praised without end.行者請師父留一寺名。Xingzhe asked his master to bestow a name upon the monastery.三藏道：「有，留名當喚做『甘霖普濟寺』。」郡侯稱道：「甚好，甚好。」用金貼廣招僧眾，侍奉香火。Sanzang said, “I have one: let it be called the Monastery of Universal Deliverance by Blessed Rain.” The prefect declared, “Excellent, excellent!” He issued invitations written in gold to gather a community of monks to tend the incense offerings.殿左邊立起四眾生祠，每年四時祭祀；To the left of the main hall, a living shrine to the four pilgrims was erected, where sacrifices were to be offered in each of the four seasons;又起蓋雷神、龍神等廟，以答神功。temples to the Thunder God, Dragon Gods, and other deities were also built in recompense for their divine aid.看畢，即命趲行。After they had finished their inspection, the pilgrims at once urged that the journey resume.

一日筵，二日宴；今日酬，明日谢。扳留将有半月，只等寺院生祠完备。一日，郡侯请四众往观。唐僧惊讶道：「功程浩大，何成之如此速耶？」郡侯道：「下官催趱人工，昼夜不息，急急命完，特请列位老爷看看。」行者笑道：「果是贤才能干的好贤侯也。」即时都到新寺，见那殿阁巍峨，山门壮丽，俱称赞不已。行者请师父留一寺名。三藏道：「有，留名当唤做『甘霖普济寺』。」郡侯称道：「甚好，甚好。」用金贴广招僧众，侍奉香火。殿左边立起四众生祠，每年四时祭祀；又起盖雷神、龙神等庙，以答神功。看毕，即命趱行。

那一郡人民，知久留不住，各備贐儀，分文不受。When the people of the prefecture realized that they could not keep them any longer, each prepared parting gifts, but the pilgrims refused to accept so much as a penny.因此，合郡官員人等，盛張鼓樂，大展旌幢，送有三十里遠近，猶不忍別，遂掩淚目送，直至望不見方回。Thus all the officials and people of the prefecture brought out drums and music in full array and unfurled a grand display of banners and pennants, escorting them for nearly thirty li. Still unable to bear the parting, they covered their tearful eyes and watched the pilgrims depart, returning only when they could no longer see them.這正是：Precisely so:

那一郡人民，知久留不住，各备赆仪，分文不受。因此，合郡官员人等，盛张鼓乐，大展旌幢，送有三十里远近，犹不忍别，遂掩泪目送，直至望不见方回。这正是：
