Bajie and Monkey Slay the Leopard Demon

086Chapter 86

滿:「?」:「?」:「Now Sun Dasheng was leading the horse and carrying the luggage, searching all over the mountain and calling for his master, when suddenly Zhu Bajie came running up in a huff and asked, “Brother, what are you shouting for?” Xingzhe said, “Master has disappeared. Have you seen him?” Bajie replied, “I only ever meant to be a monk under Tang Seng, but you played another trick on me and made me some sort of general.I risked my life fighting that fiend for a while and was lucky to escape alive.?」:「Master was in your and Sha Seng’s keeping, yet you come asking me?” Xingzhe said, “Brother, I do not blame you.Your eyes must somehow have deceived you, and you let the fiend come back to seize Master.。」:「。」I went to fight the fiend and told Friar Sha to watch Master, but now even Friar Sha is gone.” Bajie laughed and said, “I expect Friar Sha took Master off somewhere to relieve himself.” Before he had finished speaking, Sha Seng appeared.:「?」:「Xingzhe asked, “Sha Seng, where has Master gone?” Sha Seng replied, “Both your eyes must have grown dim, for you let the fiend come and seize Master.。」:「。」 Old Sha went to fight that fiend, while Master remained sitting on the horse by himself.” Xingzhe leapt about in fury, crying, “We have fallen for his trick! We have fallen for his trick!” Sha Seng asked, “What trick?” Xingzhe said, “It is the Split-Petal Plum-Blossom stratagem: he drew us brothers apart, then struck straight at the heart and carried Master off.?」Heavens, heavens, heavens! What are we to do?” Tears streamed uncontrollably down his cheeks.:「Bajie said, “Do not cry; crying only makes you look a weakling.。」In any case he cannot be far away—he must still be somewhere on this mountain. Let us go and search.”

The three had no better plan and could only enter the mountain to look for him. After traveling about twenty li, they saw below a sheer cliff a cave dwelling:

」。At the sight of it, Xingzhe bounded to the entrance in two or three strides and looked. The stone gate was tightly shut, and above it hung a stone tablet bearing eight large characters: “Hidden Mist Mountain, Linked-Rings Cave of Broken Peaks.”:「Xingzhe said, “Bajie, get to work!。」 This is where the fiend lives, and Master must be inside.” Emboldened, the Idiot violently raised his rake and struck with all his strength, smashing a great hole in the stone gate. He shouted, “Monster! Send our master out at once, or my rake will bring down your gate and finish off your entire household!”

:「。」:「?」:「!」:「?」:「。」窿:「The little fiend guarding the gate hurried inside to report, “Your Majesty, disaster has broken loose!” The old monster asked, “What disaster?” The little fiend replied, “Someone outside has broken the gate and is shouting for his master!” Greatly alarmed, the old monster said, “I wonder who has tracked us here?” The Vanguard said, “Do not be afraid; let me go and see.” The little fiend ran to the front gate, cocked his head, and peered through the hole that had been smashed in it. Seeing a fellow with a long snout and huge ears, he turned and called loudly, “Your Majesty, do not fear him! It is only Zhu Bajie. He has little ability and will not dare act outrageously. If he does, we shall open the gate, seize him, and bring him in to fill out the steamer.便。」:「The only one to fear is that monk with the hairy face and the mouth of the Thunder Lord.” Hearing this from outside, Bajie said, “Brother, he is not afraid of me—only of you.。」:「。」:「。」:「』,Master must be in their lair. Hurry forward!” Xingzhe cursed, “You wicked beast! Your Grandfather Sun is here! Send my master out, and I may spare your life.” The Vanguard said, “Your Majesty, this is terrible! Sun Xingzhe has tracked us here too.” The old monster complained, “This is all because of that ‘split-petal’ scheme of yours; now you have brought calamity to our very gate.?」:「How shall this end?” The Vanguard said, “Set your mind at ease, Your Majesty, and do not complain just yet.I remember that Sun Xingzhe is a broad-minded and magnanimous monkey. Though his magic powers are immense, he loves flattery.Let us take out a false human head to deceive him, flatter him with a few words, and tell him that we have eaten his master. If we manage to trick him into leaving, Tang Seng will still be ours to enjoy;。」:「?」:「。」if he is not deceived, we can devise something else.” The old monster asked, “Where are we to get a false human head?” The Vanguard said, “Just let me make one and see.”

:「。」 What a fiend! With a fine steel knife and axe he carved a willow root into the likeness of a human head, splashed it with human blood until it was a ghastly mess, then ordered a little fiend to carry it to the gate on a lacquer tray and call, “Grandfather Great Sage, calm your anger and allow me to report.” Sun Xingzhe truly did love flattery; hearing himself called “Grandfather Great Sage,” he stopped Bajie and said, “Hold your hand and let us hear what he has to say.” The little fiend holding the tray said, “Your master was seized by our king and brought into the cave, but our rustic, unruly little fiends knew no better: one came to swallow him, another to gnaw him; some clawed, others bit, until they ate your master and left only this head.” Xingzhe said, “If he has been eaten, so be it. Just bring out the head and let me see whether it is genuine.” The little fiend tossed the head out through the hole in the gate.:「At the sight of it, Zhu Bajie began to weep: “How pitiful!。」:「。」:「?」:「。」:「?」:「Such a master went in, and such a master has come out!” Xingzhe said, “Idiot, first determine whether it is real or false, and then you may cry.” Bajie said, “Shame on you! How can a human head be real or false?” Xingzhe said, “This is a false head.” Bajie asked, “How can you tell?” Xingzhe said, “When a real head is thrown down, it lands with a dull thud and makes no ringing sound;a false head sounds like a wooden clapper when it is thrown.。」If you do not believe me, let me throw it down for you to hear.” He picked it up and dashed it against a rock, where it rang out with a loud clang.:「。」:「便Friar Sha said, “Brother, it rang!” Xingzhe replied, “Since it rang, it is false.。」I shall make it reveal its true form for you.” He swiftly drew his gold-banded cudgel and smashed it apart with one blow. When Bajie looked, he saw that it was only a willow root.:「Unable to restrain himself, the Idiot began cursing: “You pack of hairy brutes!。」You have hidden my master in your cave, yet bring out a willow root to deceive your Ancestor Zhu! Do you take my master for a willow-tree spirit in disguise?”

:「。」:「?」:「──Terrified, the little fiend with the tray ran trembling back to report, “Hard, hard, hard! Hard, hard, hard!” The old monster asked, “Why so many ‘hards’?” The little fiend said, “Zhu Bajie and Friar Sha could have been fooled, but Sun Xingzhe is a dealer in antiques—he knows his wares, he knows his wares! He recognized at once that it was a false head.。」:「If we give him a real human head now, perhaps he will leave.” The old monster asked, “Where are we to get a real human head?。」使:「There are more heads than we can eat in our Skinning Pavilion; go choose one.” The fiends went to the pavilion, selected a fresh head, and gnawed the scalp clean until it was smooth and slippery. They sent it out on the tray, calling, “Grandfather Great Sage, the earlier head was indeed a false one.。」This one truly is Lord Tang’s head. Our king had kept it as a charm to guard the house, but now presents it especially to you.” With a plop, they hurled the human head through the hole in the gate, and it rolled about dripping blood.

Sun Xingzhe recognized it as a real human head and, helpless with grief, began to weep;Bajie and Sha Seng also burst into loud sobs.:「Holding back his tears, Bajie said, “Brother, stop crying for the moment.。」:「。」The weather is bad, and the head may soon begin to stink. Let me take it away and bury it while it is still fresh; then we can mourn.” Xingzhe said, “That makes sense.” Unmindful of the filth, the Idiot clasped the head to his breast and ran to a sunny place on the cliff. Finding a sheltered spot where the vital breath gathered, he dug a pit with his rake, buried the head, and heaped up a grave mound over it.:「。」Only then did he call to Sha Seng, “You and Brother keep mourning while I go find something to make an offering.” He went to the edge of the stream, broke off several large willow branches, and picked up a few pebbles.Returning to the grave, he planted the willow branches on either side and piled the pebbles in front.:「?」:「Xingzhe asked, “What is the meaning of this?” Bajie replied, “These willow branches shall serve as pines and cypresses to shade Master’s grave;。」:「。」:「。」:「these stones shall serve as refreshments for an offering to Master.” Xingzhe shouted, “You clod! The man is dead, and still you offer him stones!” Bajie said, “They merely express the feelings of the living and stand for a filial heart.” Xingzhe said, “Enough of this foolery.Let Sha Seng remain here: first, to mourn beside the grave; second, to guard the luggage and horse.。」:「You and I will smash open their cave, seize the demons, tear them into ten thousand pieces, and avenge Master.” Friar Sha said through his tears, “Elder Brother speaks most rightly.。」You two take care in the fight; I shall stand guard here.”

:「!」Brave Bajie at once took off his black brocade monk’s robe and tightened his close-fitting underclothes. Raising his rake, he followed Xingzhe. The two pressed forward with all their might, allowing no parley, and smashed straight through the stone gate. Their shouts shook the heavens as they cried, “Give us back our living Tang Seng!” Every fiend in the cave, great or small, was scared out of his wits, and all blamed the Vanguard for his bad counsel.:「?」:「:『。』。」:「。」The old monster asked the Vanguard, “These monks have broken in through the gate; what are we to do with them?” The Vanguard replied, “The ancients said it well: ‘Once your hand is in the fish basket, you cannot escape the smell.’ We may as well see it through. Let the chiefs lead our troops out to kill those monks.” The old monster, having no other choice, gave the order: “Little ones, stand united! Take your finest weapons and follow me into battle.” With a concerted roar, they charged out of the cave.

退:「Dasheng and Bajie hurriedly withdrew a few paces to a level patch on the mountainside, where they faced the horde of fiends and shouted, “Which of you is the leader with the famous name??」:「Which is the fiend who seized our master?” The fiends formed their battle lines and flourished an embroidered banner. Wielding an iron pestle, the old monster answered in a loud voice, “You insolent monk, do you not recognize me?I am the Great King of the Southern Mountain, and for hundreds of years I have roamed freely here.?」:「I have already seized and eaten your Tang Seng. What can you do about it?” Xingzhe cursed, “You audacious hairy brute! How many years can you possibly have lived, that you dare assume the title ‘Southern Mountain’?Laojun Li is the ancestor who opened heaven and fashioned earth, yet even he sits to the right of the Hall of Supreme Purity;the Buddha Rulai is the World-Honored One who governs the age, yet even he sits beneath the Great Peng;』。the Sage Kong is the revered master of the Confucian teaching, yet he is called only ‘the Master.’』,You wicked beast, how dare you call yourself ‘Great King of the Southern Mountain’ and boast of roaming freely for hundreds of years?。」使:「Do not run—take one stroke from your lord and grandfather!” The fiend twisted aside to dodge, met the iron cudgel with his pestle, and, glaring round-eyed, demanded, “With that monkey-like face of yours, how dare you try to cow me with so many words??」:「What skill have you, that you behave so wildly at my gate?” Xingzhe laughed and said, “You nameless wicked beast! So you truly do not know Old Sun.Stand firm, steel your courage, and listen while I tell you:

Hearing this, the monster was both alarmed and furious. Gritting his teeth, he sprang forward and struck at Xingzhe with his iron pestle.Xingzhe lightly parried it with his cudgel and still wished to talk to him, but Bajie could restrain himself no longer and drew his rake, striking wildly at the monster’s Vanguard. The Vanguard led the whole horde charging forward. Thus began a melee on the level ground among the mountains—a splendid and deadly battle indeed:

Seeing how fiercely the little fiends fought and that repeated blows could not drive them back, Sun Dasheng used his body-multiplying art. He plucked a handful of hairs, chewed them in his mouth, spat them out, and cried, “Change!” Each became another image of himself, every one wielding a gold-banded cudgel, and they battered their way inward from the front. The hundred or two hundred little fiends could not guard their rear while facing the front, nor shield the right while covering the left. Each fled for his own life, retreating in defeat to the cave.Xingzhe and Bajie fought their way outward through the ranks. Pitiful indeed were the witless fiends: those who met the rake bled from all nine orifices;those who encountered the cudgel had flesh and bones mashed to pulp.Terrified, the Great King of the Southern Mountain rolled up wind and summoned mist, escaping back alive by the narrowest chance. The Vanguard, unable to transform himself, was felled by a stroke of Xingzhe’s cudgel and revealed his true form: a grey wolf spirit with an iron back.:「。」:「。」:「。」:「。」:「!」Bajie stepped forward, seized him by the legs, turned him over, and said, “Since he was a pup, this rogue must have stolen and eaten no end of other people’s piglets and lambs.” Xingzhe shook himself and recalled all his hairs, saying, “Idiot, we must not delay. Hurry after the old monster and make him pay for Master’s life.” Bajie turned and, seeing none of the little Xingzhes, said, “Brother, all your magic images have gone.” Xingzhe replied, “I have already called them back.” Bajie cried, “Wonderful! Wonderful!” Delighted, the two returned victorious.

Meanwhile, the old monster, having escaped alive into the cave, ordered the little fiends to carry stones and earth and block the front entrance. The surviving little fiends, every one of them trembling, sealed the gate completely and dared not show their heads again.Xingzhe led Bajie in pursuit to the entrance and shouted challenges, but no one within answered.使Bajie struck it with his rake, but could not move it in the slightest.:「。」:「?」:「。」Xingzhe understood and said, “Bajie, do not waste your strength. They have blocked the gate.” Bajie asked, “If the gate is blocked, how can we avenge Master?” Xingzhe said, “Let us return to the grave for now and see how Sha Seng fares.”

The two returned to the spot and found Sha Seng still weeping.:「Bajie’s grief deepened. Dropping his rake, he threw himself upon the grave, beat the earth with his hands, and cried, “My ill-fated Master! My master, dead far from home!!」:「Where shall I ever see you again?” Xingzhe said, “Brothers, do not grieve so bitterly for now.The fiends have blocked the front gate, so there must surely be a back entrance by which they come and go.。」:「。」:「。」You two stay here while I go and search again.” Bajie said through his tears, “Brother, be careful! Do not let them carry you off as well, or we shall not know how to mourn properly: one cry for Master and one for Elder Brother, until our lamentations are all confused.” Xingzhe replied, “Nothing will happen. I have methods of my own.”

Good Dasheng put away his cudgel, tightened his robe, and strode off. Rounding the mountainside, he suddenly heard the murmuring of water. He turned to look and saw that it was the stream, pouring down from higher up.Across the stream he also saw a small gate, with a hidden drainage channel to its left.:「He said, “There can be no doubt! That must be the back gate.If I go in my natural appearance, some little fiend may open the gate, see me, and recognize me. Let me change into a water snake and slip across.Wait—if I become a water snake, Master’s departed spirit may learn of it and blame me, a man of religion, for turning into a long, coiling serpent.I had better become a little crab.。」No, that will not do either; Master might blame me, a man of religion, for having too many legs.” So he changed into a water rat and, with a swish, darted across, squeezing through the drainage channel into the courtyard within.Poking out his head to look, he saw in a sunny spot a little fiend laying out pieces of human flesh to dry.:「Xingzhe thought, “My child, that must be Master’s uneaten flesh. They are drying it into jerky against rainy weather. If I reveal my true form, rush up, and kill him with one blow, I shall merely show myself brave but witless.。」I had better transform myself again, go farther in, find the old monster, and see how matters stand.” Leaping from the channel, he shook himself and became a tiny winged ant.Indeed:

He spread his wings and, without sound or shadow, flew straight into the central hall.:「。」:「?」:「There he saw the old monster sitting in vexation and distress. A little fiend suddenly bounded in from the rear and reported, “Your Majesty, great joy—a thousandfold joy!” The old monster asked, “Where does this joy come from?” The little fiend replied, “I was just spying from the head of the stream outside the back gate when I suddenly heard people wailing.I climbed to the peak and looked, and there were Zhu Bajie, Sun Xingzhe, and Friar Sha, bowing before a grave and weeping bitterly.。」:「They must have mistaken that human head for Tang Seng’s, buried it, and heaped up a grave mound to mourn over.” Hearing this from his hiding place, Xingzhe rejoiced inwardly and thought, “If that is what they say, my master must still be hidden somewhere and has not yet been eaten.。」Let me search again and see whether he is alive or dead; then I shall deal with them.”

Good Dasheng flew about the central hall, looking east and west. He saw a small side door, tightly shut.Squeezing through a crack in the door, he found himself in a large garden, where he could faintly hear sorrowful cries. He flew straight into its depths and saw a grove of great trees, beneath which two men were bound; one was none other than Tang Seng.:「。」:「At the sight, Xingzhe could hardly contain himself. Unable to hold back, he resumed his true form, stepped close, and called, “Master!” Recognizing him, the elder shed tears and said, “Wukong, you have come!Quickly, save me!。」:「Wukong! Wukong!” Xingzhe said, “Master, do not keep calling my name. There are people nearby, and I fear word may leak out.Since you are still alive, I can save you.The monster claimed he had eaten you and brought out a false human head to deceive me, so we fought him with bitter hatred.。」Set your mind at ease, Master, and endure a little longer. Once I have brought that fiend down, I can come and free you safely.”

Dasheng recited an incantation, shook himself, and once again became an ant. Returning to the central hall, he clung to the main roof beam.He saw the surviving little fiends crowding together in noisy clusters.:「Suddenly one little fiend leapt out from among them and reported, “Your Majesty, when they found the gate blocked and could not break it open, they gave up all hope, abandoned Tang Seng, and made the false head into a grave. They will mourn all day today, mourn another day tomorrow, and on the third day complete the three days of mourning; then they will surely go home.。」:「。」:「。」:「。」:「?」They were saying, “Once we learn they have dispersed, we shall bring Tang Seng out, chop and mince him, stew him with spices, and each enjoy a fragrant piece; that should give us long life.” Another little demon clapped his hands and said, “No, no—he will taste better steamed.” A third said, “Boil him; that will save firewood too.” Yet another said, “He is a rare delicacy. We should salt and pickle him, so he will keep longer.” Hearing this from among the rafters, Xingzhe was enraged. “What bitter grudge has my master against you, that you should plot to eat him so?” He plucked out a handful of hairs, chewed them to pieces, blew them gently forth, and silently recited a spell, turning them all into sleep-insects, which he cast upon the demons’ faces. One by one, the insects burrowed into their nostrils; the little demons gradually began to nod, and before long they had all fallen asleep.Only the old demon could not sleep soundly: he rubbed his head and scrubbed his face with both hands, sneezing continually and pinching his nose.:「Xingzhe said, “Can it be that he has noticed?”。」“I will give him a double-wick lamp.” He plucked out another hair, transformed it in the same fashion, and tossed it onto the demon’s face, where it burrowed into his nostril.Of the two insects, one entered from the left and the other from the right. The old demon lurched to his feet, stretched his back, gave two yawns, and then fell asleep too, snoring loudly.

Xingzhe rejoiced in secret; only then did he leap down and resume his true form.:「!」:「。」:「。」:「。」:「。」He took the staff from his ear and gave it a shake, making it as thick as a duck’s egg; with a clang he smashed open the side door, ran into the rear garden, and cried, “Master!” The elder said, “Disciple, come quickly and untie me—these ropes are cutting me to pieces.” Xingzhe said, “Do not hurry, Master. Let me kill the demons first, and then I will come back to free you.” He dashed back to the central hall and raised his cudgel to strike, but then checked his hand. “No—that will not do. I had better free Master before I strike.” He returned to the garden, but then thought, “I had better kill them before I rescue him.” After going back and forth like this two or three times, he finally came skipping and dancing into the garden.:「?」Seeing him, the elder found joy amid his sorrow and said, “Monkey, I suppose you saw that I had not lost my life, and were so overjoyed you knew not what to do; is that why you are dancing about like this?” Xingzhe came forward, untied the ropes, took his master by the arm, and started away.:「。」:「。」:「?」:「Then they heard the man bound to the tree opposite cry, “My lord, show your great mercy and save my life too!” The elder stopped and called, “Wukong, untie that man as well.” Xingzhe asked, “Who is he?” The elder replied, “He was captured and brought here a day before me.。」“He is a woodcutter. He says his mother is old and must be longing desperately for him. He seems a truly filial man, so let us save him too while we are about it.”

Xingzhe obeyed and untied him as well; together they went out through the rear entrance, climbed the rocky cliff, and crossed the steep ravine.:「The elder thanked him, saying, “Worthy disciple, it is thanks to you that both his life and mine were saved.?」:「“Where are Wuneng and Wujing?” Xingzhe replied, “The two of them are over there weeping for you.。」:「。」:「?」:「“Call out to them.” The elder duly raised his voice and shouted, “Bajie! Bajie!” The fool was so dazed from weeping that he wiped his tears and runny nose and said, “Brother Sha, Master’s ghost has come home to appear to us—is that not him calling?” Xingzhe stepped forward and shouted, “You oaf! What ghost are you talking about??」:「“Is that not Master coming?” Sha Seng looked up, and when he saw him, hurriedly knelt before him and said, “Master, how much you have suffered!?」“Brother, how did you manage to rescue him?” Xingzhe related all that had happened.

When Bajie heard this, he gnashed his teeth in fury and, unable to restrain himself, raised his rake and battered the grave mound flat; then he dug out the man’s head and pounded it to pulp.:「?」:「。」:「Tang Seng asked, “Why are you pounding him?” Bajie replied, “Master, I do not even know whose dead kinsman he was, yet they made me face him and weep.” The elder said, “But it was thanks to him that my life was saved.“When you brothers attacked their gate, clamoring for me, they must have brought him out to fob you off;“otherwise they would have killed me instead.。」“Bury him again, and show the compassion proper to us men of religion.” Hearing the elder’s words, the fool buried the bundle of mangled flesh and bones and heaped up another grave mound.

:「。」使Xingzhe laughed and said, “Master, please sit here a while and wait until I have exterminated them.” He leapt down the rocky cliff again, crossed the ravine, and entered the cave. Taking into the central hall the ropes that had bound Tang Seng and the woodcutter, he found the old demon still asleep, bound him hand and foot like a trussed horse, scooped him up with the golden-hooped staff, hoisted him onto his shoulder, and went straight out through the rear entrance.:「From afar, Zhu Bajie saw him and said, “Brother, you are fond of doing work with only one end weighted.?」“Would it not be better to find another one and carry them balanced on a pole?” Xingzhe came up and set the demon down, and Bajie raised his rake to strike.:「。」 :「。」Xingzhe said, “Hold! There are still little demons in the cave who have not been caught.” Bajie said, “Brother, take me inside and let me fight them.” Xingzhe replied, “Fighting them would only be more trouble. Better to find some firewood and root them out altogether.” Hearing this, the woodcutter led Bajie to a hollow in the east, where they gathered broken bamboo tips, fallen pine needles, hollow willows, severed vines, yellow wormwood, old reeds, rushes, and dry mulberry wood. They carried several loads into the rear entrance.Xingzhe lit the fire, while Bajie fanned up the wind with his two ears. The Great Sage leapt up, shook himself, and recovered the hairs that had become sleep-insects.By the time the little demons awoke, smoke and flames were raging all around them.Pitiful indeed! Not a single one could hope to escape alive.Even the entire cave dwelling was burned utterly bare. They then returned to their master. When the master heard the old demon awaken and cry out, he called, “Disciple, the demon is awake.” Bajie stepped forward and killed the old monster with one blow of his rake. It resumed its true form and proved to be a leopard spirit with a mottled hide like mugwort leaves.:「Xingzhe said, “A spotted hide can devour tigers, and now it has learned to turn into a man as well.。」“Only by beating it to death like this can we put an end to future trouble.” The elder thanked them without cease and mounted his horse.:「西The woodcutter said, “My lords, my humble home lies not far to the southwest.。」“Please come there, meet my mother, and allow us to kowtow in thanks for saving my life; then I shall see you on your way.”

The elder gladly agreed. He dismounted, and together with the woodcutter and all four members of the company proceeded winding southwestward. Before they had gone far, they indeed saw the following:

In the distance, an old woman leaned against a brushwood gate, her eyes brimming with tears as she wailed bitterly, crying to her son and to Heaven.:「。」:「When the woodcutter saw his mother, he left the elder behind and hurried ahead to the brushwood gate. Kneeling, he cried, “Mother, your son has returned!” The old woman clasped him in her arms and said, “My son! When you did not come home these past few days, I could only suppose that the lord of the mountain had seized you and taken your life. The pain in my heart was unbearable.“Since you were not harmed, why have you returned only today??」:「“And where are your carrying-rope and your axe?” The woodcutter kowtowed and said, “Mother, your son truly was seized by the lord of the mountain and bound to a tree. There was scarcely any hope that I would live, but fortunately these lords came along.西“This venerable lord is a holy arhat journeying from the Tang realm in the Eastern Land to the Western Heaven to fetch the scriptures.“He too was seized by the lord of the mountain and bound to a tree.“But his three lordly disciples possess vast divine powers, and they beat the lord of the mountain to death.“It turned out to be a leopard spirit with a mottled hide like mugwort leaves.“They burned all the lesser demons to death, without exception, then untied and rescued the venerable elder, and freed your child as well.“Their kindness is truly as boundless as Heaven is high and Earth is deep.“But for them, your child would undoubtedly be dead.。」“Now peace has returned to the mountain; your child could walk there all night and come to no harm.”

Hearing this, the old woman bowed at every step as she went to welcome the elder and his four companions, then led them all through the brushwood gate and seated them in the thatched cottage.Mother and son kowtowed and thanked them without end, then hurriedly prepared a vegetarian meal to express their gratitude.:「。」:「。」:「Bajie said, “Brother Woodcutter, I know your household is poor. A simple meal will do; you must not put yourself to the trouble of making elaborate preparations.” The woodcutter replied, “I shall not deceive you, my lord: here in the mountains we are indeed poor. We have no fragrant mushrooms, common mushrooms, Sichuan pepper, or fine spices—only a few kinds of wild greens to offer you as a token of our humble gratitude.” Bajie laughed and said, “You are too kind, too kind.。」:「。」“Just serve it quickly; we are hungry.” The woodcutter replied, “It is coming, it is coming.” Sure enough, before long the tables and stools were wiped and set out, and the food was brought in: several dishes of wild greens, just as he had said. This was what could be seen:

Master and disciples ate their fill, then packed up and prepared to set out.The woodcutter did not dare detain them long. He asked his mother to come out, bow once more, and offer her thanks again. The woodcutter kept kowtowing; then he took up a jujube-wood staff, tucked up his clothes, and went out to escort them.:「。」Sha Seng led the horse, Bajie carried the luggage, and Xingzhe stayed close at either side. From horseback, the elder cupped his hands and said, “Brother Woodcutter, please trouble yourself to lead us as far as the main road, and there we shall part.” Together they climbed heights, descended slopes, rounded ravines, and sought their way over the hillsides.:「The elder reflected from horseback and said, “Disciple...

:「Hearing this, the woodcutter said, “My lord, you must not worry. :「“This main road leads west, and in less than a thousand li you will reach the kingdom of Tianzhu, the land of supreme bliss.” Hearing this, the elder swung down from his horse and said, “You have taken much trouble to escort us so far.。」“Since this is the main road, please return home, Brother Woodcutter, and convey my respectful greetings to your venerable mother. We have just imposed greatly upon you for that generous vegetarian feast, and this poor monk has nothing with which to repay you; I can only recite scriptures morning and evening, praying that mother and son may enjoy peace and live to a hundred years.” The woodcutter repeatedly assented, took his leave, and returned by the way he had come.西Master and disciples then continued straight westward.Just so:

But how many days remained before they reached the Western Heaven? Listen to the explanation in the next chapter.

What it’s about

After confirming that Sanzang lives, Wukong coordinates a renewed assault on Linked-Ring Cave. Bajie breaks into the stronghold with his rake, the lesser demons scatter, and the leopard spirit flees in changing forms. Wukong blocks his escape and the disciples kill him, ending an enemy who has no celestial master arriving to reclaim him. Their rage at the counterfeit death is redirected into the actual work of opening the cave and reaching their captive master.

Sanzang is released, and the group explains how the false head deceived them before they discovered the trick. Bajie's ferocity helps destroy the cave and its remaining threats, while Wukong's investigation supplies the certainty on which action depends. Reunited, the pilgrims bury fear and grief and continue west. The compact resolution emphasizes collective competence: Sha Wujing guards, Bajie smashes defenses, and Wukong moves between intelligence, command and combat.

When it was written 背景

Unlike divine mounts whose owners interrupt punishment, the leopard is a self-appointed local king and receives an earthly death. That difference makes celestial status, not merely conduct, conspicuous in the novel's uneven outcomes. The linked rings of the cave suggest both its connected chambers and the chain of deceptions surrounding Sanzang. Learners can track 救, 打死, 團圓 and 前行 as verification becomes violent recovery and then resumed travel. The episode also restores confidence after showing how readily the disciples' loyalty can be manipulated through an image of their master's body.
