The Buddha Sends Guanyin to Seek a Pilgrim to Fetch the Scriptures

008Chapter 8

》。This lyric poem is set to the tune of "Su Wu Man."The story tells how our Buddha Tathagata, having taken leave of the Jade Emperor, returned to the Thunderclap Treasure Monastery. There he saw the three thousand Buddhas, the five hundred arhats, the eight great vajra guardians, and the boundless bodhisattvas, each one holding banners, streamers, and precious canopies, rare treasures and immortal flowers, arrayed beneath the twin sala trees of the fairy realm of Vulture Peak to welcome him.:「Tathagata halted his auspicious cloud and said to the assembly: "With my most profound prajna wisdom, I have surveyed the Three Realms entire.Their root and original nature are, in the end, utterly still and extinguished. They are the same as empty space — possessing nothing whatsoever. As for the subduing of the wayward monkey, that is a matter beyond ordinary understanding.。」滿It marks the beginning of birth and death; such is the nature of dharma-forms." Having spoken thus, he released the light of his sarira relics, and forty-two white rainbows filled the sky, stretching from north to south. When the assembly saw this, they threw themselves down in worship. After a little while, gathering auspicious clouds and colored mists, he ascended the lotus throne of highest rank and sat down composed and still.:「?」:「The three thousand Buddhas, the five hundred arhats, the eight vajra guardians, and the four bodhisattvas pressed their palms together, came forward, and having paid their respects, asked: "Who was it that disturbed Heaven's palace and threw the Peach Banquet into chaos?" Tathagata said: "That fellow is a monster monkey born on the Mountain of Flowers and Fruit, his crimes reaching to Heaven, beyond all description. All the heavenly generals and gods together could not subdue him;though Erlang captured him, and Laojun refined him in his furnace, still he could not be harmed.耀By the time I arrived, he was right in the midst of the Thunder Generals, flaunting his might and showing off his power.I put a stop to the fighting and asked after his origins. He said he possessed supernatural powers, could transform himself at will, and could also ride the somersault cloud, going a hundred and eight thousand li in one leap.I made a wager with him; he could not escape my hand, so I seized him in my grasp, transformed my fingers into the Five Elements Mountain, and sealed him beneath it there.。」The Jade Emperor threw open the golden gates of the jasper palace, invited me to sit in the seat of honor, and held the Grand Assembly of Peace in Heaven to thank me, and only then did I take my leave and return." The assembly, hearing this, rejoiced and praised him to the utmost.

When the thanks were done, each went back to his own rank, each attended to his own affairs, and together they enjoyed their heavenly bliss.Truly it was thus:

A poem says:

The Buddha dwelt there within the Thunderclap Treasure Monastery on Vulture Peak.:「One day he summoned together all the Buddhas, arhats, guardians, bodhisattvas, vajra warriors, and monks and nuns, and said: "Since the subduing of the wayward monkey and the Peace in Heaven, I have lost track of the months and years here, but I reckon it must be some five hundred years in the mortal world.?」Now, it being the fifteenth day of the first month of autumn, I have a treasure bowl in which are arranged a hundred kinds of rare flowers and a thousand kinds of strange fruits and other such things, and I would share this Ullambana Feast with you all — what say you?" The whole assembly, each pressing his palms together, bowed to the Buddha three times in acceptance.Tathagata then had Ananda hold the treasure bowl steady, its flowers, fruits, and other offerings within, while Kasyapa distributed them to all.The assembly, moved with gratitude, each offered a poem in thanks.

When the bodhisattvas had finished offering their poems, they asked Tathagata to make plain the fundamental root and point out the origin and course of things.Tathagata then parted his benevolent lips a little and expounded the great Law, proclaiming the true fruit of enlightenment, discoursing on the wondrous scriptures of the Three Vehicles and the five aggregates of the Surangama. There could be seen the heavenly dragons circling round, and flowers raining down in profusion. It was just as this:

:「When Tathagata had finished his discourse, he said to the assembly: "I observe that among the living beings of the Four Great Continents, good and evil differ from region to region: those of Purvavideha, the Eastern Continent of Superior Body, revere Heaven and worship Earth, their hearts open and their breath at peace;those of Uttarakuru, the Northern Continent, though they are fond of killing living things, it is only for the sake of a meal, their nature being dull and their feelings sparse, so they do not do much harm;西we of Aparagodaniya, the Western Continent, are neither greedy nor murderous; we nurture our vital breath and cultivate hidden spirit, and though we lack the highest truth, everyone there naturally enjoys long life;but those of Jambudvipa, the Southern Continent, delight in greed and lust, in slaughter and calamity, killing much and contending much — truly what is called a fierce field of tongues and mouths, an evil sea of right and wrong.。」:「?」:「I now have the True Scriptures of the Three Repositories, which can persuade people toward goodness." The bodhisattvas, hearing this, pressed their palms together in submission, and asked before the Buddha: "What are these True Scriptures of the Three Repositories that Tathagata speaks of?" Tathagata said: "I have one repository of Law, which discourses on Heaven;one repository of Discourses, which speaks of Earth;and one repository of Scripture, which delivers the spirits of the dead. The Three Repositories together comprise thirty-five divisions, amounting to fifteen thousand one hundred and forty-four scrolls in all; they are the scriptures of true cultivation, the gateway to true goodness.I have long wished to send them to the Land of the East, but it is a pity that the living beings of that region are foolish and ignorant, slandering the true words, failing to recognize the essential purpose of my teaching, and treating the true doctrine of yoga with neglect. How might I find someone of spiritual power to go to the Land of the East and seek out a person of good faith, who would endure the bitter journey over a thousand mountains and inquire his way across ten thousand waters, coming to my place to obtain the true scriptures, to be handed down forever in the Land of the East, converting and transforming all living beings — that would truly be a blessing as great as a mountain, a virtue as deep as the sea.?」:「。」Who is willing to make this journey?" At that, the Bodhisattva Guanyin stepped forward near the lotus throne, bowed to the Buddha three times, and said: "Your disciple, though unworthy, is willing to go to the Land of the East to find a scripture-seeker." All the assembly raised their heads to look, and saw that the bodhisattva:

:「Tathagata, seeing this, was greatly pleased at heart, and said: "No one else could manage this journey.。」:「?」:「Only the Venerable Guanyin, whose divine powers are vast and boundless, could go and accomplish it." The bodhisattva said: "On this journey to the Land of the East, what instructions do you have for me?" Tathagata said: "On this journey, you are to survey the roads and paths, but you are not permitted to travel through the clouds of high heaven. You must go half by cloud and half by mist, passing over the mountains and rivers with your own eyes, carefully noting the distances of the whole journey, so as to instruct the scripture-seeker.。」But I fear the person of good faith may find the journey too hard, so I shall give you five treasures." He at once ordered Ananda and Kasyapa to bring out a brocade cassock.:「and a nine-ringed monk's staff, and said to the bodhisattva: "This cassock and this staff are for the personal use of the scripture-seeker.穿If he is firmly resolved to come here, wearing my cassock, he shall escape falling into the cycle of transmigration;。」holding my staff, he shall not suffer from poison or harm." The bodhisattva bowed in acceptance.:「Tathagata then took out three golden fillets and handed them to the bodhisattva, saying: "These treasures are called the tight-fillet bands. Though they are alike, being three of a kind, their uses each differ.I have three chapters of spells for tightening the golden band.Should you encounter along the road some demon or monster of vast supernatural power, you must persuade him to reform and follow the scripture-seeker as a disciple.使If he refuses to be commanded, you may place this fillet upon his head, and it will of itself take root in his flesh.。」Recite the corresponding spell once, according to its particular use, and his eyes will swell and his head will ache, his skull feeling as though it would split, and this will surely bring him into my fold."

The bodhisattva, hearing this, leapt up with joy, bowed, and withdrew. She at once summoned Xingzhe Hui'an to accompany her.使That Hui'an wielded an iron staff weighing a full thousand catties, and served always at the bodhisattva's side as a mighty warrior for subduing demons. The bodhisattva then made the brocade cassock into a bundle and had him carry it on his back. The bodhisattva hid away the golden fillets, took up the monk's staff, and set off straight down from Vulture Peak.On this journey, it was fated that:

When the bodhisattva reached the foot of the mountain, the Great Immortal Jinding of the Yuzhen Temple met her at the temple gate and invited her in to take tea.:「。」:「?」:「。」The bodhisattva dared not linger long, saying: "I now bear the command of Tathagata's Law, and go to the Land of the East to seek a scripture-seeker." The Great Immortal said: "When will the scripture-seeker arrive?" The bodhisattva said: "It is not yet fixed — perhaps in two or three years' time he may reach here." She then took leave of the Great Immortal, and traveling half by cloud and half by mist, marked out the course of the journey. There is a poem to bear witness. The poem says:

As master and disciple were walking along, they suddenly saw three thousand li of weak water — this was the boundary of the Flowing Sands River.:「The bodhisattva said: "Disciple, this place will be hard to pass.?」:「?」The scripture-seeker, being of turbid bone and mortal flesh, how could he ever cross it?" Hui'an said: "Master, look and see how wide the river is." The bodhisattva halted her cloud-steps to look, and saw only:

Just as the bodhisattva was surveying the scene, suddenly there came a loud splashing sound from the river, and out of the waves leapt a demon, exceedingly hideous. He was of such a form:

:「!」That monster, gripping a treasure staff in hand, came up onto the bank and made straight to seize the bodhisattva, but was blocked by Hui'an, who swung up his iron rod and shouted: "Do not flee!" The monster then raised his treasure staff to meet him.The two of them fought a fierce battle there on the bank of the Flowing Sands River, truly astonishing:

The two of them went back and forth, battling through several dozen bouts, without either gaining the upper hand.:「?」:「The monster, blocking the iron rod, said: "What monk are you, from where, that you dare come and fight me?" Muzha said: "I am Muzha, called Xingzhe Hui'an, second son of the Pagoda-Bearing Heavenly King, now escorting my master to the Land of the East to seek a scripture-seeker.?」:「?」:「?」What manner of demon are you, that you dare so boldly block the road?" The monster then came to his senses, saying: "I recall you used to cultivate with the Guanyin of the Southern Sea in the Purple Bamboo Grove — why have you come here?" Muzha said: "Is that not my master there on the bank?"

The monster, hearing this, said "yes, yes" repeatedly, and put away his treasure staff.:「殿輿He let Muzha lead him by the collar to see Guanyin, bowed his head to the ground, and confessed: "Bodhisattva, forgive my offense, and let me tell my story: I am no demon or monster — I was the Curtain-Raising General who attended the imperial carriage beneath the Hall of Divine Mists.Only because, at the Peach Banquet, I slipped and shattered a crystal cup, the Jade Emperor had me beaten eight hundred strokes and banished down to the mortal world, transformed into this shape.穿He also decreed that once every seven days a flying sword be sent to pierce my chest and ribs over a hundred times before returning. That is the cause of such suffering.Having no other recourse, and unable to bear hunger and cold, every two or three days I come out among the waves to seek a traveler to eat.。」:「I never expected that today, in my ignorance, I would offend the great and compassionate Bodhisattva." The bodhisattva said: "Having committed a crime in Heaven, you were already banished down here, and now you go on taking life in this way — this is truly adding crime upon crime.I now bear the Buddha's command, and go to the Land of the East to seek a scripture-seeker.西Why do you not enter my gate, submit to the true fruit of goodness, and follow the scripture-seeker as a disciple, going to the Western Heaven to worship the Buddha and seek the scriptures?穿I will see to it that the flying sword no longer comes to pierce you.?」:「。」:「When your merit is achieved at that time, your crime will be pardoned and your former office restored — what say you to that?" The monster said: "I am willing to submit to the true fruit." He then went on: "Bodhisattva, I have eaten countless people here, and in times past several scripture-seekers have come this way, and all were eaten by me.Whatever heads of those I ate, I cast into the Flowing Sands, and they sank straight to the bottom of the water. In this water, even a goose feather cannot float.Only the skulls of nine scripture-seekers float upon the surface, and never sink.穿I thought them strange objects, and strung them together on a cord, to play with in my idle hours.?」:「On this journey, I fear that if the scripture-seeker does not manage to reach this place, would that not ruin my own future prospects instead?" The bodhisattva said: "How could there be any question of his not arriving?。」:「。」You may hang the skulls about your neck, and await the scripture-seeker — they shall of themselves have their use." The monster said: "Since that is so, I am willing to receive your instruction." The bodhisattva then laid her hand upon his crown and administered the precepts to him, and taking Sand as his surname, gave him the surname Sha;and gave him a Dharma name, calling him Sha Wujing. From that time he entered the gate of Buddhism, and having seen the bodhisattva across the river, he cleansed his heart and purged his thoughts, no longer taking life, and devoted himself entirely to awaiting the scripture-seeker.

The bodhisattva took her leave of him, and together with Muzha went straight on toward the Land of the East. After traveling for some time, they saw again a lofty mountain, over which hung a baleful mist so thick they could not walk upon it.Just as they were about to ride the clouds over the mountain, all at once a fierce wind arose, and out sprang another demon. He too was of a most fearsome and hideous form; one could see:

He rushed forward, heedless of friend or foe, and raised his rake to strike straight at the bodhisattva.:「。」:「He was blocked by Xingzhe Muzha, who gave a great shout: "You vile monster, show some manners — mind my rod!" The demon said: "This monk does not know when he is well off.。」Mind my rake!" The two of them clashed and collided at the mountain's foot, contending for victory, truly a fierce fight:

Just as the two were locked in the thick of battle, Guanyin, from midair, cast down a lotus flower, parting the rake and the rod.便:「?」:「The monster, seeing this, was startled at heart, and asked: "What monk are you, from where, that you dare conjure some trick of flowers before my very eyes to fool me?" Muzha said: "You fleshly-eyed, mortal-framed vile creature!I am a disciple of the Bodhisattva of the Southern Sea.!」:「?」:「?」:「This is the lotus flower cast down by my master — do you still not recognize it!" The monster said: "The Bodhisattva of the Southern Sea — is that the Guanyin who sweeps away the Three Disasters and saves from the Eight Calamities?" Muzha said: "Who else could it be?" The demon cast aside his rake, bowed his head to the ground in obeisance, and said: "Elder brother, where is the bodhisattva?。」:「?」:「。」I trouble you to present me to her." Muzha, raising his face, pointed and said: "Is that not she?" The demon kowtowed toward her, crying out loudly: "Bodhisattva, forgive my offense, forgive my offense."

:「?」:「Guanyin lowered her cloud and came forward, asking: "What wild boar spirit are you, what old hog turned demon, that you dare block my way here?" The demon said: "I am no wild boar, nor am I an old hog — I was originally the Marshal of the Heavenly River, Tianpeng.Only because, drunk with wine, I made improper advances to Chang'e, the Jade Emperor had me struck two thousand blows with a mace and banished down to the mortal world. My single true spirit went straight to seize a body and be reborn, but by mischance I took the wrong road, and was cast into the womb of a sow, coming out transformed into this shape. It was I who bit to death the mother sow and killed off the litter of piglets, and here I have occupied this mountain lair, living by eating people.。」:「?」:「I never expected to encounter the bodhisattva — I most earnestly beg to be delivered, to be delivered." The bodhisattva said: "What is this mountain called?" The demon said: "It is called Fuling Mountain.Within the mountain there is a cave called Yunzhan Cave.In that cave there originally lived a certain Second Sister Luan, who, seeing that I had some skill in arms, took me in as her husband and head of household, which is also called 'marrying in.'Before a year was out, she died, and the entire property of the cave came into my possession to enjoy. Here I have lived for many years, having no proper occupation to support myself, and so simply live by eating people as my lot.。」:「,『。』?」:「I most earnestly beg the bodhisattva to forgive my offense." The bodhisattva said: "As the ancients said, 'If you wish to have a future, do not act in a way that has no future.' Having already broken the law of the upper realm, and now still not reforming your murderous heart, taking life and committing sin — is this not to be punished twice over for two crimes?" The demon said: "Future, future — if I follow your way, would you have me drink the wind?:『。』!」:「『。』As the common saying goes: 'Follow the law of officials and be beaten to death; follow the law of the Buddha and be starved to death.' I'm off, I'm off — better to catch a traveler and eat him nice and fat, his mother's! What do I care about two crimes or three crimes, a thousand crimes or ten thousand crimes!" The bodhisattva said: "'If a man has a good wish, Heaven will surely follow it.' If you are willing to submit to the true fruit, you shall naturally have a means to support yourself.?」The world has the five grains, which can relieve hunger — why then live by eating people?"

:「』。」:「Hearing these words, the monster seemed to wake as if from a dream, and said to the Bodhisattva, "I wish to follow the right path, but what is to be done—'having offended Heaven, there is nowhere left to pray.'" The Bodhisattva said, "I have received the Buddha's decree to go to the Eastern Land to seek the scripture-seeker.西。」 You may become his disciple, make the journey to the Western Heaven, and atone for your sins with merit—I promise you will be freed from calamity." The monster said eagerly, "I am willing, I am willing." The Bodhisattva then touched his crown and administered the precepts to him, and taking his form as his surname, gave him the surname Zhu (Pig);and gave him the Dharma name Zhu Wuneng.Thereupon he accepted the command and returned to the true path, keeping to a vegetarian fast, abstaining from the five pungent herbs and the three forbidden meats, and waited solely for the scripture-seeker.

The Bodhisattva then, together with Muzha, took leave of Wuneng and came onward, riding half on clouds and mist.Just as they were traveling, they saw a jade dragon calling out in the sky.:「?」:「西殿The Bodhisattva drew near and asked, "What dragon are you, suffering punishment here?" The dragon said, "I am the son of Ao Run, the Dragon King of the Western Sea. Because I set fire and burned the bright pearl on the palace hall, my father the king submitted a memorial to the Celestial Court, charging me with unfilial rebellion. The Jade Emperor hung me suspended in the sky and gave me three hundred blows, and in a few days I am to be executed.。」I beg the Bodhisattva to save me, to save me."

:「?」:「。」Hearing this, Guanyin at once went with Muzha straight to the Southern Gate of Heaven, where the two celestial masters Qiu and Zhang had already come to receive them and asked, "Where are you going?" The Bodhisattva said, "This poor monk wishes to have an audience with the Jade Emperor." The two celestial masters hastened at once to report.殿The Jade Emperor thereupon came down from the hall to receive her.:「。」The Bodhisattva stepped forward, and having completed her courtesies, said, "This poor monk, under the Buddha's decree, is going to the Eastern Land to seek the scripture-seeker. Along the way I came upon a sinful dragon hanging in suspension, and I have come especially to memorialize you: spare his life and bestow him upon this poor monk, so that he may serve as a mount for the scripture-seeker." Hearing this, the Jade Emperor at once issued a decree of pardon, and dispatched a heavenly general to release him and hand him over to the Bodhisattva. The Bodhisattva gave thanks for the favor and withdrew.使This little dragon kowtowed in gratitude for the favor of sparing his life, and submitted to the Bodhisattva's commands.西The Bodhisattva sent him to dwell in a deep ravine, there only to wait for the scripture-seeker to come, when he would transform into a white horse and go to the west to achieve merit. The little dragon accepted the order and hid himself away—no more of him for now.

The Bodhisattva, leading Muzha, passed over this mountain and pressed onward again toward the Eastern Land. Before they had gone far, they suddenly saw ten thousand rays of golden light and a thousand strands of auspicious vapor.:「。」:「。」:「。」Muzha said, "Master, that place giving off light is none other than Five Elements Mountain, where the Tathagata's seal-talisman may be seen." The Bodhisattva said, "Ah, this is that Great Sage Equal to Heaven who threw the Peach Banquet into chaos and wreaked havoc in Heaven—he is pinned here now." Muzha said, "Indeed, indeed." Master and disciple both climbed the mountain to look at the talisman, and it was the six-syllable true mantra: "Om Mani Padme Hum."Having looked it over, the Bodhisattva sighed without end, and composed a poem. The poem read:

Just as master and disciple were speaking, they had already startled the Great Sage.:「?」From the foot of the mountain the Great Sage cried out loudly, "Who is it up on the mountain reciting poems and exposing my shortcomings?" Hearing this, the Bodhisattva went straight down the mountain to search and look. There beneath the stone cliff were the local earth god, the mountain spirit, and the heavenly generals guarding the Great Sage, all of whom came to bow and receive the Bodhisattva, and led her before the Great Sage.Looking closely, she saw that he was in fact pinned within a stone casket—able to speak with his mouth, but unable to move his body.:「?」:「The Bodhisattva said, "You there, surnamed Sun—do you recognize me?" The Great Sage opened wide his fiery eyes with golden pupils, nodded his head, and cried out loudly, "How could I not recognize you? You are none other than she of Mount Putuoluojia in the Southern Sea, the Deliverer from Suffering and Difficulty, the Greatly Compassionate and Greatly Merciful Namo Guanshiyin Bodhisattva.I am honored by your visit, honored by your visit. Here I pass my days as if they were years, and not a single acquaintance has come to look in on me even once.?」:「。」:「Where have you come from?" The Bodhisattva said, "I am carrying out the Buddha's decree, going to the Eastern Land to seek the scripture-seeker, and passing this way, I made a point of sparing a few steps to come see you." The Great Sage said, "The Tathagata deceived me and pinned me under this mountain—it has been more than five hundred years now, and I have not been able to break free.便。」:「。」:「。」I earnestly beg the Bodhisattva to show a little mercy and save this old Sun." The Bodhisattva said, "Your sins run exceedingly deep. Were I to save you and let you out, I fear you would once again bring about calamity, which would be far from good." The Great Sage said, "I already know my repentance. I only wish that in your great compassion you would point out a path for me—I am willing to devote myself to cultivation." And this is just as it is said:

滿:「:『Hearing these words, the Bodhisattva was filled with joy, and said to the Great Sage, "The sacred scripture says: 'If one's words are good, they will be answered from a thousand li away;。』if one's words are not good, they will be opposed from a thousand li away.' Since you now have this intent, wait until I reach the Great Tang of the Eastern Land and find a scripture-seeker, and I shall have him come to save you.?」:「。」:「。」:「。」:「You may become his disciple, upholding the teaching and observing the discipline, entering my Buddhist gate, and cultivating anew toward the right fruit—how would that be?" The Great Sage said again and again, "I am willing to go, I am willing to go." The Bodhisattva said, "Since you have this good fruit before you, let me give you a Dharma name." The Great Sage said, "I already have a name—I am called Sun Wukong." The Bodhisattva said with further joy, "Earlier on my way I also brought two others to submission, and they are ranked precisely with the character 'Wu.' You now also bear the character 'Wu,' which matches perfectly with them—very good, very good.。」In that case there is no need for further instruction—I shall be on my way." So the Great Sage, seeing his true nature and understanding his mind, turned to the Buddhist teaching, while the Bodhisattva, keeping this matter in her heart, went on to seek out the sacred monk.

She and Muzha left this place and came straight eastward, and before many days had passed they arrived at Chang'an in the Great Tang.Gathering in their clouds and mist, master and disciple transformed themselves into two mangy wandering monks and entered the city of Chang'an, and before they knew it, evening had already come.Walking to the side of a great market street, they saw a shrine to the local earth god, and the two went straight in.This so startled the earth god that his heart raced and his ghost-soldiers trembled with fear; recognizing it was the Bodhisattva, he kowtowed and ushered her in. :「The earth god then hurried off to report to the City God and the Altar Spirit, and to all the deities of every shrine throughout Chang'an, all of whom, learning it was the Bodhisattva, came to pay their respects and said, "Bodhisattva, forgive us all the fault of being slow to receive you." The Bodhisattva said, "You must none of you let the slightest word of this leak out.I am carrying out the Buddha's decree, and have come especially to this place to seek out the scripture-seeker.。」I will borrow your shrine to lodge in for a few days, and once I have found the true monk, I shall return at once." The various deities each returned to their own posts, and drove the earth god to lodge temporarily in the City God's temple, while master and disciple concealed their true forms.

In the end, we do not yet know which person will be found to seek the scriptures—pray listen to the explanation given in the next chapter.

What it’s about

The Buddha announces that the eastern lands need his three collections of scriptures and sends Guanyin to find a pilgrim. Travelling east, she recruits four punished beings: Sha Wujing at Flowing-Sand River, Zhu Bajie at Cloud-Path Cave, the dragon who will become a horse, and Wukong under Five Elements Mountain. Each is promised release through service to the future monk.

Separate offenders are thus arranged into a party before any of them knows the others. Their crimes and punishments differ, but redemption takes the same practical form: protecting a vulnerable traveller over a long course. Guanyin's planning converts the consequences established in Heaven into the human relationships that will carry the rest of the novel.

When it was written 背景

This transitional 回 changes direction from Wukong's failed revolt to the westward mission. Because the recruits' familiar pilgrimage names are not always used yet, learners should note location and former office rather than memorize every title. Buddhist salvation appears here as assigned work and mutual dependence, not simply private enlightenment.
