Monkey Escapes the Eight-Trigrams Furnace and Is Trapped Beneath Five Elements Mountain
第007回Chapter 7
The tale tells that the Great Sage Equal to Heaven was escorted by the heavenly soldiers to the demon-execution platform below, bound to the demon-subduing pillar, and though hacked with blades and axes, stabbed with spears and carved with swords, nothing could so much as scratch his body. The Star Lord of the Southern Dipper vehemently ordered the gods of the Fire Department to set fires and roast him, but still they could not burn him. Then the gods of the Thunder Department were made to strike him with thunder-shards and nails, yet even more could they not harm a single hair of him. The Mighty Ghost King and the others memorialized: "Your Majesty, we do not know where this Great Sage learned this method of protecting his body — we have hacked him with blades and axes, struck him with thunder and burned him with fire, yet not one hair has been harmed. What are we to do?" On hearing this, the Jade Emperor said: "If the wretch is like this, like this, how shall he be dealt with?" The Supreme Patriarch Laojun then memorialized: "That monkey ate the peaches of immortality, drank the imperial wine, and moreover stole the elixir of the immortals. Those five gourds of my elixir, some raw, some refined, he swallowed them all into his belly. Working the true fire of samadhi, they have fused into a single mass, so that his whole body has become as an adamantine form, and cannot swiftly be harmed. It would be best to let this old Daoist take him away and place him in the Eight Trigrams Furnace, refining him there with gentle and fierce fire, to smelt my elixir back out of him — then his body will of itself turn to ashes." On hearing this, the Jade Emperor at once ordered the Six Dings and Six Jias to release him and hand him over to Laojun. Laojun received the decree and departed. Meanwhile the court also summoned Erlang the Illustrious Sage, and bestowed upon him a hundred blossoms of gold, a hundred bottles of imperial wine, a hundred pellets of the restored elixir, along with rare treasures, bright pearls, and embroidered silks, bidding him share these with his sworn brothers. The Perfected Lord gave thanks for the favor and returned to Guanjiangkou — of this we shall say no more.
Laojun, upon reaching the Palace of Tushita, undid the ropes binding the Great Sage, removed the instrument that pierced his pipa-bones, thrust him into the Eight Trigrams Furnace, and ordered the Daoist tending the furnace and the boy attendants fanning the flames to fan the fire up and begin the smelting. Now this furnace was set with the Eight Trigrams: Qian, Kan, Gen, Zhen, Xun, Li, Kun, and Dui. He at once squeezed his body down into the position under the Xun trigram. Xun is Wind, and where there is wind there is no fire. Only the wind stirred up smoke, which scorched both his eyes red, giving him a chronic ailment of the eyes — hence he came to be called "Fiery Eyes and Golden Pupils."
Time indeed flies swiftly, and before long forty-nine times seven days had passed, and Laojun's firing was complete in every degree. Then one day, the furnace was opened to take out the elixir. The Great Sage, both hands pressed over his eyes, was just then rubbing them and wiping away tears, when he heard a sound at the head of the furnace. Suddenly opening his eyes and seeing the bright light, he could not restrain himself — with a single leap of his body he sprang out of the elixir furnace, and with a crash kicked over the Eight Trigrams Furnace, and made straight for the outside. The attendants tending the fire, watching the furnace, and the Dings and Jias all rushed in alarm to grab hold of him, but he knocked them down one after another, like a mad white-browed tiger or a wind-crazed one-horned dragon. Laojun rushed up and grabbed at him with one hand, but was flung by him head over heels, and the Great Sage broke free and fled. He at once drew the As-You-Will Rod from his ear, waved it once against the wind till it was thick as a bowl, and held it once more in his hand; then, heedless of right or wrong, he threw Heaven's Palace into great chaos again, fighting until the Nine Luminaries shut their doors and windows and the Four Heavenly Kings vanished without a trace. What a splendid monkey spirit — there is a poem to prove it. The poem says:

This time the Monkey King, making no distinction of rank, wielded his iron rod, striking east and warding off west, and no god at all could withstand him; he fought his way clear through to the Hall of Universal Brightness and out before the Hall of Miraculous Mist. Fortunately Wang Lingguan, the Marshal serving under the True Lord Yousheng, was on duty at the hall; seeing the Great Sage rampaging unchecked, he raised his golden whip and stepped forward to block him, saying: "Where does the impudent monkey think he's going? I am here — you had best not run wild." The Great Sage, without a word of argument, raised his rod and struck;那靈官鞭起相迎。the Marshal raised his whip to meet him. The two of them fought together before the Hall of Miraculous Mist in a fine melee:

At that time all the gods pressed the Great Sage together in one place, yet none could approach his body, and there was nothing but shouting and confused fighting. This soon alarmed the Jade Emperor, who at once issued a decree ordering the Wandering Inspector Spirit Officer, together with the True Lord Yisheng, to go west and invite the Venerable Buddha to subdue him.
The two sages, having received the decree, went straight to the sacred realm of Vulture Peak, before the Treasured Monastery of the Thunderclap Sound, and after paying their respects to the Four Vajra Guardians and the Eight Bodhisattvas, asked to have their arrival announced. The assembled gods thereupon went before the Jeweled Lotus Platform to report, and the Tathagata summoned the two before him. The two sages bowed to the Buddha three times around and stood waiting beside the platform. The Tathagata asked: "What business does the Jade Emperor have, that he troubles you two sages to come down?" The two sages then reported: "Once at Flower-Fruit Mountain a monkey was born, and there he displayed his magic powers, gathering the monkeys together to throw the world into chaos. The Jade Emperor issued a decree of pacification and appointment, making him Protector of the Horses, but he despised the office as too lowly and rebelled and left. Thereupon the Heavenly King Li and Prince Nezha were sent to capture him but failed, so he was again offered pacification and appointed the Great Sage Equal to Heaven — at first he had the office but no salary. He was put in charge of the Garden of Immortal Peaches, and at once he stole the peaches;又走至瑤池,偷殽、偷酒,攪亂大會;then he went to the Jasper Pool, stole the delicacies and the wine, and threw the great banquet into chaos;仗酒又暗入兜率宮,偷老君仙丹,反出天宮。relying on the wine, he further stole secretly into the Palace of Tushita, stole Laojun's elixir, and then fled Heaven's Palace. The Jade Emperor again dispatched a hundred thousand heavenly soldiers, yet still could not subdue him. Afterward Guanyin recommended the True Lord Erlang, together with his sworn brothers, to pursue and destroy him; he transformed himself in countless ways, and it was only thanks to Laojun's throwing his Diamond Bracelet to strike him down that Erlang was able to seize him. He was escorted before the imperial presence, and an order was at once given to execute him, but hacking with blades and axes, burning with fire and striking with thunder — none of it could harm him. Laojun requested and was granted leave to take him away and refine him with fire. After forty-nine days the cauldron was opened, but he sprang out of the Eight Trigrams Furnace once more, beat back the heavenly soldiers, and made straight through the Hall of Universal Brightness to outside the Hall of Miraculous Mist. He was blocked by Wang Lingguan, the Marshal serving the True Lord Yousheng, who fought him bitterly, and then thirty-six Thunder Generals were summoned to trap him at the center, yet in the end none could get near him. The matter is now most urgent, and for this reason the Jade Emperor especially begs the Tathagata to come to his rescue." On hearing this, the Tathagata said to the assembled Bodhisattvas: "You all sit calmly here in the Dharma Hall, and let there be no disorder in the seat of meditation, while I go to subdue the demon and rescue the throne."
The Tathagata then summoned the two Venerable Ones Ananda and Kasyapa to accompany him, left the Thunderclap Sound, and went straight to outside the gate of the Hall of Miraculous Mist. Suddenly he heard shouts that shook the ears — it was the thirty-six Thunder Generals surrounding the Great Sage. The Buddha issued his dharma command: "Tell the Thunder Generals to lay down their weapons and open their ranks, and call the Great Sage out, that I may ask him what magic powers he has." The generals accordingly withdrew. The Great Sage also put away his magic form, resumed his original body and came forward, his anger blazing, and cried in a stern voice: "What sort of virtuous man are you from what quarter, that you dare come and stop the fighting to question me?" The Tathagata smiled and said: "I am the Venerable Sakyamuni of the Western Paradise of Ultimate Bliss. Namo Amitabha Buddha! I have now heard that you have run wild and rustic, repeatedly rebelling against Heaven's Palace — I do not know in what region you were born and raised, in what year you attained the Way, and why you are so violent and unruly." On hearing this, the Tathagata gave a cold laugh and said: "So you, wretch, are but a monkey grown into a spirit — how dare you harbor such deceitful ambitions, wishing to seize the exalted throne of the August Jade Emperor? He has cultivated himself since his youth, bitterly passing through one thousand seven hundred and fifty kalpas. Each kalpa comes to one hundred twenty-nine thousand six hundred years — reckon for yourself how many years that must be, before one may enjoy this boundless great Way. And you, a mere beast newly come into human form for the first time in your existence — how dare you utter such enormous boasts? Shameless creature, shameless creature — you will shorten your allotted span of life for this. Take refuge at once, and speak no more such nonsense. I fear only that you may meet with a cruel hand, and your life be ended in an instant — it would be a pity to lose your original true form." The Great Sage said: "Though he has cultivated long since his youth, he still ought not to occupy this place forever. As the common saying goes: 'Emperors take turns doing the job; next year it will be my turn.' Just let him move out and yield Heaven's Palace to me, and that will be the end of it;若還不讓,定要攪攘,永不清平。」 大聖道:「我的手段多哩:我有七十二般變化,萬劫不老長生;but if he will not yield, I will surely go on making trouble, and there will never be peace." The Buddha said: "Besides the arts of eternal life and transformation, what other abilities do you have, that you dare occupy this sacred realm of Heaven's Palace?" The Great Sage said: "My skills are many indeed — I have seventy-two transformations and life eternal, unaged through ten thousand kalpas;會駕觔斗雲,一縱十萬八千里。I can ride the somersault cloud, and with a single leap cover one hundred and eight thousand li. Why then should I not sit upon the throne of Heaven?" The Buddha said: "Let me make a wager with you: if you truly have the ability to somersault clear out of the palm of this right hand of mine, I will call it your win, and there will be no more need to raise arms or wage bitter war — I shall simply invite the Jade Emperor to go and dwell in the West, and yield Heaven's Palace to you;若不能打出手掌,你還下界為妖,再修幾劫,卻來爭吵。」 but if you cannot leap clear of my palm, you shall go back down to the mortal world as a demon, and cultivate a few more kalpas before you come back to contend again." Hearing this, the Great Sage laughed to himself in secret: "This Tathagata is a great fool indeed. When I, old Sun, somersault once I go one hundred and eight thousand li — how could his palm, not even a foot across, keep me from leaping clear of it?" He hastily called out: "Since you say so, can you stand by your word?" The Buddha said: "I can, I can." He stretched out his right hand, which was just about the size of a lotus leaf.
The Great Sage put away his As-You-Will Rod, gathered up his divine might, and with a single leap of his body stood in the palm of the Buddha's hand, saying: "Here I go." Watch him — in a streak of cloud-light, without form or shadow, he was gone. With his wisdom-eye the Buddha watched and saw the Monkey King go on and on like a whirling pinwheel, never pausing, pressing ever forward. As the Great Sage traveled on, he suddenly saw five flesh-pink pillars, propping up a wisp of blue vapor. He said: "This must be the very end of the road. This time when I go back, with the Tathagata as my witness, the Hall of Miraculous Mist will surely be mine to sit upon." Then he thought again: "Wait — let me leave some mark here, so that I may have proof when I speak to the Tathagata." He plucked out a hair, blew a breath of magic upon it, and cried "Change!" — and it turned into a writing brush thick with ink, with which he wrote in large characters on the middle pillar: "The Great Sage Equal to Heaven Made a Tour to This Place." When he had finished writing, he put the hair away. And, showing no respect at all, he furthermore let loose a stream of monkey urine at the base of the first pillar. Then he turned his somersault cloud around, went straight back to where he had come from, and stood in the Tathagata's palm, saying: "I have been and now I am back. Tell the Jade Emperor to yield Heaven's Palace to me."
The Tathagata cursed him: "You piss-soaked monkey — you have never once left the palm of my hand!" The Great Sage said: "You do not know. I went all the way to the very end of Heaven and saw five flesh-pink pillars propping up a wisp of blue vapor; I left a mark there — dare you come with me and see?" The Tathagata said: "No need to go — just lower your head and look for yourself." The Great Sage opened wide his fiery eyes and golden pupils, and looking down, saw written on the middle finger of the Buddha's right hand the words: "The Great Sage Equal to Heaven Made a Tour to This Place." And in the fork between the thumb and the finger there still lingered some smell of monkey urine. The Great Sage started in astonishment: "Can such a thing be? Can such a thing be?我將此字寫在撐天柱子上,如何卻在他手指上?I wrote these words upon the pillar that props up Heaven — how then do they come to be on his finger? Could it be that he has some art of knowing things before they happen? I simply do not believe it, I do not believe it. Let me go and try once more."
What a Great Sage — he hastily gathered himself to leap out again. But the Buddha turned his palm over and gave a single push, thrusting the Monkey King out through the gate of the Western Heaven, and turned his five fingers into the Five Elemental Mountains of gold, wood, water, fire, and earth joined together, naming them "Mount Five Elements," and lightly pinned him down beneath them.眾雷神與阿儺、迦葉一個個合掌稱揚道:「善哉,善哉!All the Thunder Gods, together with Ananda and Kasyapa, pressed their palms together one by one in praise, saying: "Excellent, excellent!
The Tathagata Buddha, having exterminated the demon monkey, at once summoned Ananda and Kasyapa to return together to the Western Paradise of Ultimate Bliss. Just then Tianpeng and Tianyou rushed out of the Treasured Hall of Miraculous Mist and said: "Pray let the Tathagata wait a moment — our Lord's grand carriage is coming." On hearing this, the Buddha turned to look up. In a moment, sure enough, there appeared the eight-scened phoenix carriage and the nine-radiance jeweled canopy, sounding mysterious songs and wondrous music, chanting boundless divine hymns, scattering flowers of treasure and wafting true incense, coming straight before the Buddha to give thanks, saying: "Deeply grateful for your great Dharma in subduing the demon, we beg the Tathagata to stay one more day, that we may invite all the immortals to hold a feast in gratitude." The Tathagata dared not refuse, and at once pressed his palms together and said in thanks: "This old monk, receiving the summons of the Great Heavenly Honored One, came here — what powers do I truly have? It is rather the great good fortune of the Heavenly Honored One and all the gods. How could I presume to accept such thanks?" The Jade Emperor issued a decree, at once ordering the gods of the Thunder Department to go in every direction and invite the Three Pure Ones, the Four Sovereigns, the Five Elders, the Six Departments, the Seven Origins, the Eight Poles, the Nine Luminaries, the Ten Capitals, the thousand Perfected and ten thousand Sages to come to this gathering, together to give thanks for the Buddha's grace. He also ordered the Four Great Heavenly Teachers and the Fairies of the Nine Heavens to throw wide open the Golden Tower of the Jade Capital, the Precious Palace of Great Mystery, and the Jade Hall of the Cavern Sun, inviting the Tathagata to take the high seat upon the Seven-Jeweled Numinous Terrace, arranging seats for each rank in order, and preparing dragon liver and phoenix marrow, jade nectar and peaches of immortality.
Before long, the Celestial Worthy of Primordial Beginning of the Jade Purity, the Celestial Worthy of Numinous Treasure of the Upper Purity, the Celestial Worthy of the Way and its Virtue of the Grand Purity, the Perfected Lords of the Five Vapors, the Star Lords of the Five Dippers, the Three Officials and Four Sages, the Perfected Lords of the Nine Luminaries, the Left and Right Assistants, the Heavenly Kings, and Nezha, and every manner of mysterious and empty spiritual power, came pair by pair with banners and flags, side by side with pennants and canopies, all bearing bright pearls and rare treasures, longevity fruits and marvelous flowers, and bowed before the Buddha in offering, saying: "We are moved by the Tathagata's boundless Dharma power in subduing the demon monkey. Favored by the Great Heavenly Honored One's banquet, we have all been summoned here to express our thanks. 各仙老異口同聲,俱道:「好個『安天大會』!We beg the Tathagata to give this gathering a name — what would be fitting?" The Tathagata, accepting the request of all the gods, said: "If a name is now to be established, let it be called the Feast of Peace in Heaven." All the immortal elders, with one voice, all said: "What a fine 'Feast of Peace in Heaven'! What a fine 'Feast of Peace in Heaven'!" Having spoken, each took his seat, cups were passed and wine poured round, flowers were pinned in hair and zithers played — truly it was a fine gathering. There is a poem to prove it. The poem says:
While all were joyously delighting in the gathering, suddenly they saw the Queen Mother, leading a company of immortal maidens, fairy girls, beauties and belles, drifting and swaying, dance forward before the Buddha, and bow in salutation, saying: "Once before, the demon monkey threw the Peach Banquet into chaos, and I asked all the immortals and Buddhas to bring their efforts to fruition. Now, grateful that the Tathagata's great Dharma has chained and locked this stubborn monkey, and rejoicing in this 'Feast of Peace in Heaven,' I have nothing else to offer in thanks, so today with my own clean hands I have picked several peaches of immortality from the great tree, and now present them." Truly it was thus:
The Buddha pressed his palms together and gave thanks to the Queen Mother. The Queen Mother then had the immortal maidens and fairy girls sing, those who could sing, and dance, those who could dance. All the assembled immortals at the gathering praised and admired them once more.正是:It was truly thus:

The Star of Longevity had also arrived. Having paid his respects to the Jade Emperor, he then saw the Tathagata, and expressed his thanks, saying: "At first I heard that the demon monkey had been taken by Laojun to the Palace of Tushita to be smelted, and I thought this must surely bring lasting peace, but unexpectedly he broke out again. Fortunately the Tathagata skillfully subdued this monster, and now holds a banquet in thanks for it, so hearing of this I have come at once. I have nothing else to offer, so I have specially brought purple fungus and jasper herbs, jade lotus roots and golden elixir, to present as my offering." The poem says:
Rulai (the Buddha) happily accepted their thanks. Shouxing took his seat, and the passing of wine cups went on as before. Just then the Barefoot Immortal arrived once more, and after bowing low before the Jade Emperor, he also thanked the Buddha, saying: "I am deeply grateful for your divine power in subduing the demon monkey. I have nothing fit to show my respect, so I have specially brought two immortal pears and a few fire-dates to offer." A poem says:

The Buddha again expressed his thanks, and told Ananda and Kasyapa to gather up all the offered gifts one by one, and then turned to thank the Jade Emperor for the banquet. Everyone grew thoroughly tipsy. Just then a patrolling spirit official came to report: "The Great Sage has stuck his head out." The Buddha said, "No matter, no matter." From his sleeve he simply drew out a talisman bearing six golden characters: "Om Mani Padme Hum." He handed it to Ananda and told him to paste it on the mountaintop. This venerable one at once took the talisman, carried it out through the Gate of Heaven, and went to the summit of the Mountain of Five Elements, where he pasted it firmly onto a square stone; at once the mountain took root and its seams closed fast. He could still draw breath, and could work a hand free enough to wave it about a little. Ananda returned to report: "The talisman has been pasted in place."
The Buddha then took his leave of the Jade Emperor and the assembled gods, and went out beyond the Gate of Heaven with his two disciples. He then showed further compassion, chanting a true spell to summon a local earth deity to the Mountain of Five Elements, who, together with the Vajra Guardians of the Five Quarters, was to dwell on this mountain and keep him under guard. But when he was hungry, they were to give him iron pellets to eat;渴時,與他溶化的銅汁飲。and when he was thirsty, they were to give him molten copper to drink. When the days of his allotted suffering were fulfilled, someone would naturally come to save him.正是:Truly it was thus:

What it’s about
The Buddha bets that Wukong cannot leave his palm. Wukong leaps to what he thinks is the universe's edge, marks five pillars and returns boasting, only to learn they were the Buddha's fingers. The hand becomes Five Elements Mountain and pins him beneath it; a written charm keeps him there until the scripture pilgrim comes to release him.
The Monkey rebellion ends not with greater force but with a lesson in scale. Wukong's immense speed never carries him outside the order he challenges, and his crude signature proves his confinement rather than his freedom. The chapter closes the self-contained opening cycle while making punishment a long wait for a relationship not yet formed.
When it was written 背景
The first seven 回 constitute the novel's famous Monkey cycle, often read independently. Five Elements language draws on Chinese cosmology while the Buddha's palm supplies a vividly physical joke. Learners should watch how Wukong confidently interprets each object and how the final revelation reverses those interpretations; the formal verse can be read afterward.
