這一首詞，牌名《南柯子》，單道著唐僧脫卻通天河寒冰之災，踏白黿負登彼岸。This verse, to the tune 'Nan Ke Zi,' tells solely of how Tang Seng escaped the calamity of the freezing ice of the Tongtian River, treading upon the white soft-shelled turtle's back to reach the far shore.師徒四眾，順著大路，望西而進。Master and disciples, the four of them, followed the great road, pressing on toward the west.正遇嚴冬之景，但見那林光漠漠煙中淡，山骨稜稜水外清。They met just the scene of deep winter: the forest light lay hazy and faint amid the mist, the mountain's bones stood sharp and clear beyond the water.

这一首词，牌名《南柯子》，单道著唐僧脱却通天河寒冰之灾，踏白鼋负登彼岸。师徒四众，顺著大路，望西而进。正遇严冬之景，但见那林光漠漠烟中淡，山骨棱棱水外清。

師徒們正當行處，忽然又遇一座大山，阻住去道。As master and disciples were traveling along, suddenly they encountered another great mountain, blocking the way ahead.路窄崖高，石多嶺峻，人馬難進。The path was narrow and the cliffs high, with many rocks and steep ridges, so that men and horse could hardly advance.三藏在馬上兜住韁繩，叫聲：「徒弟。」時有孫行者引豬八戒、沙僧近前侍立道：「師父，有何吩咐？」三藏道：「你看那前面山高，恐有虎狼作怪，妖獸傷人，今番是必仔細！」行者道：「師父放心莫慮。Sanzang reined in his horse and called out, "Disciples." At that, Sun Xingzhe led Zhu Bajie and Sha Seng forward to stand in attendance, saying, "Master, what are your instructions?" Sanzang said, "Look how high that mountain ahead is — I fear there may be tigers and wolves working mischief, and evil beasts harming people. This time you must be careful!" Xingzhe said, "Master, set your mind at ease and worry not.我等兄弟三人心和意合，歸正求真，使出蕩怪降妖之法，怕甚麼虎狼妖獸？」三藏聞言，只得放懷前進。We three brothers are of one heart and one mind, having turned to the true path in search of truth; with our arts for sweeping away demons and subduing monsters, what tiger, wolf, or evil beast need we fear?" Hearing this, Sanzang could only set his mind at ease and press onward.到於谷口，促馬登崖，擡頭仔細觀看，好山：They reached the mouth of the valley, and urging the horse up the cliff, raised their heads to look carefully about — what a mountain it was:

师徒们正当行处，忽然又遇一座大山，阻住去道。路窄崖高，石多岭峻，人马难进。三藏在马上兜住缰绳，叫声：「徒弟。」时有孙行者引猪八戒、沙僧近前侍立道：「师父，有何吩咐？」三藏道：「你看那前面山高，恐有虎狼作怪，妖兽伤人，今番是必仔细！」行者道：「师父放心莫虑。我等兄弟三人心和意合，归正求真，使出荡怪降妖之法，怕甚么虎狼妖兽？」三藏闻言，只得放怀前进。到于谷口，促马登崖，抬头仔细观看，好山：

師徒四眾冒雪沖寒，戰澌澌行過那巔峰峻嶺，遠望見山凹中有樓臺高聳，房舍清幽。Braving the snow and pressing through the cold, master and disciples, the four of them, shivering, crossed those towering peaks and steep ridges, and from afar saw, in a mountain hollow, towers and terraces rising high, with dwellings quiet and secluded.唐僧馬上欣然道：「徒弟啊，這一日又飢又寒，幸得那山凹裡有樓臺房舍，斷乎是莊戶人家，菴觀寺院；Atop his horse, Tang Seng said joyfully, "Disciples, today we are both hungry and cold; fortunately there are towers and dwellings in that mountain hollow — it must surely be some farming household, or a Daoist shrine or Buddhist monastery;且去化些齋飯，吃了再走。」行者聞言，急睜睛看，只見那壁廂兇雲隱隱，惡氣紛紛。let us go beg some food there, eat, and then continue on." Hearing this, Xingzhe quickly opened his eyes wide to look, and saw over there ominous clouds looming faintly and a baleful air swirling thick.回首對唐僧道：「師父，那廂不是好處。」三藏道：「見有樓臺亭宇，如何不是好處？」行者笑道：「師父啊，你那裡知道。He turned his head and said to Tang Seng, "Master, that place over there is no good spot." Sanzang said, "There are towers and pavilions to be seen — how could it not be a good spot?" Xingzhe laughed and said, "Master, ah, how would you know.西方路上多有妖怪邪魔，善能點化莊宅。Along the road to the West there are many demons and evil spirits skilled at transforming themselves into the likeness of villages and dwellings.不拘甚麼樓臺房舍，館閣亭宇，俱能指化了哄人。No matter what towers, dwellings, halls, or pavilions — they can all conjure up such illusions to deceive people.你知道『龍生九種」，內有一種名蜃。You know how it's said that 'the dragon bears nine kinds of offspring'; among them is one called the shen.蜃氣放光，就如樓閣淺池。The shen breathes out vapor that shines forth, taking the very form of towered pavilions and shallow pools.若遇大江昏迷，蜃現此勢。Whenever it encounters a great river shrouded in mist, the shen manifests this very scene.倘有鳥鵲飛騰，定來歇翅。Should any birds or magpies come flying by, they will surely come to rest their wings there.那怕你上萬論千，盡被他一氣吞之。No matter how many thousands upon thousands there be, all will be swallowed up in a single breath of its vapor.此意害人最重。This creature's intent to harm people is most severe.那壁廂氣色兇惡，斷不可入。」The air and hue over there are fierce and evil — we absolutely must not enter."

师徒四众冒雪冲寒，战澌澌行过那巅峰峻岭，远望见山凹中有楼台高耸，房舍清幽。唐僧马上欣然道：「徒弟啊，这一日又饥又寒，幸得那山凹里有楼台房舍，断乎是庄户人家，庵观寺院；且去化些斋饭，吃了再走。」行者闻言，急睁睛看，只见那壁厢凶云隐隐，恶气纷纷。回首对唐僧道：「师父，那厢不是好处。」三藏道：「见有楼台亭宇，如何不是好处？」行者笑道：「师父啊，你那里知道。西方路上多有妖怪邪魔，善能点化庄宅。不拘甚么楼台房舍，馆阁亭宇，俱能指化了哄人。你知道『龙生九种」，内有一种名蜃。蜃气放光，就如楼阁浅池。若遇大江昏迷，蜃现此势。倘有鸟鹊飞腾，定来歇翅。那怕你上万论千，尽被他一气吞之。此意害人最重。那壁厢气色凶恶，断不可入。」

三藏道：「既不可入，我卻著實飢了。」行者道：「師父果飢，且請下馬，就在這平處坐下，待我別處化些齋來你吃。」三藏依言下馬，八戒採定韁繩。Sanzang said, "If we truly must not enter, then I am indeed genuinely hungry." Xingzhe said, "If Master is truly hungry, please dismount, and sit here on this level ground for now; let me go elsewhere to beg some food for you to eat." Sanzang followed his words and dismounted, while Bajie held the reins steady.沙僧放下行李，即去解開包裹，取出缽盂，遞與行者。Sha Seng set down the luggage, and at once went to undo the bundle, taking out the alms bowl and handing it to Xingzhe.行者接缽盂在手中，吩咐沙僧道：「賢弟，卻不可前進。Xingzhe took the bowl in hand and instructed Sha Seng, "Worthy brother, you must not go on ahead.好生保護師父穩坐於此，待我化齋回來，再往西去。」沙僧領諾。Guard Master well and keep him seated firmly here; wait until I return from begging food, and then we shall go west again." Sha Seng assented.行者又向三藏道：「師父，這去處少吉多凶，切莫要動身別往。Xingzhe then said again to Sanzang, "Master, this place holds little good fortune and much peril — on no account move from here to go elsewhere.老孫化齋去也。」唐僧道：「不必多言，但要你快去快來。Old Sun is off to beg food now." Tang Seng said, "No need to say more, only be quick to go and quick to return.我在這裡等你。」行者轉身欲行，卻又回來道：「師父，我知你沒甚坐性，我與你個安身法兒。」即取金箍棒，幌了一幌，將那平地下週圍畫了一道圈子，請唐僧坐在中間；I shall wait here for you." Xingzhe turned to go, but then turned back again and said, "Master, I know you have no patience for sitting still, so let me give you a way to keep safe." He at once took out his gold-banded staff, gave it a shake, and drew a circle on the level ground all around, inviting Tang Seng to sit within its middle;著八戒、沙僧侍立左右，把馬與行李都放在近身。he had Bajie and Sha Seng stand in attendance to left and right, placing the horse and the luggage close by.對唐僧合掌道：「老孫畫的這圈，強似那銅牆鐵壁。He put his palms together toward Tang Seng and said, "This circle old Sun has drawn is stronger than a wall of bronze or iron.憑他甚麼虎豹狼蟲，妖魔鬼怪，俱莫敢近。Whatever tigers, leopards, wolves, or venomous creatures, demons or monstrous spirits there may be, none shall dare draw near.但只不許你們走出圈外，只在中間穩坐，保你無虞；Only you must not step outside the circle — sit steadily within it, and I guarantee you no harm;但若出了圈兒，定遭毒手。but should you step outside the circle, you will surely fall into vicious hands.千萬千萬，至祝至祝。」三藏依言，師徒俱端然坐下。I beg you most earnestly, most earnestly." Sanzang followed his words, and master and disciples all sat upright within it.

三藏道：「既不可入，我却著实饥了。」行者道：「师父果饥，且请下马，就在这平处坐下，待我别处化些斋来你吃。」三藏依言下马，八戒采定缰绳。沙僧放下行李，即去解开包裹，取出钵盂，递与行者。行者接钵盂在手中，吩咐沙僧道：「贤弟，却不可前进。好生保护师父稳坐于此，待我化斋回来，再往西去。」沙僧领诺。行者又向三藏道：「师父，这去处少吉多凶，切莫要动身别往。老孙化斋去也。」唐僧道：「不必多言，但要你快去快来。我在这里等你。」行者转身欲行，却又回来道：「师父，我知你没甚坐性，我与你个安身法儿。」即取金箍棒，幌了一幌，将那平地下周围画了一道圈子，请唐僧坐在中间；著八戒、沙僧侍立左右，把马与行李都放在近身。对唐僧合掌道：「老孙画的这圈，强似那铜墙铁壁。凭他甚么虎豹狼虫，妖魔鬼怪，俱莫敢近。但只不许你们走出圈外，只在中间稳坐，保你无虞；但若出了圈儿，定遭毒手。千万千万，至祝至祝。」三藏依言，师徒俱端然坐下。

行者縱起雲頭，尋莊化齋，一直南行，忽見那古樹參天，乃一村莊舍。Xingzhe rose up on a cloud, seeking out a village to beg food, and went straight south, when suddenly he saw ancient trees towering to the sky, marking a village settlement.按下雲頭，仔細觀看，但只見：He brought his cloud down and looked about carefully, and saw only this:

行者纵起云头，寻庄化斋，一直南行，忽见那古树参天，乃一村庄舍。按下云头，仔细观看，但只见：

行者隨步觀看莊景，只聽得呀的一聲，柴扉響處，走出一個老者，手拖藜杖，頭頂羊裘，身穿破衲，足踏蒲鞋，拄著杖，仰身朝天道：「西北風起，明日晴了。」說不了，後邊跑出一個哈巴狗兒來，望著行者，汪汪的亂吠。As Xingzhe walked about observing the scene of the village, he suddenly heard a creak — the brushwood gate sounded, and out came an old man, dragging a goosefoot cane, wearing a sheepskin cap on his head, clad in a tattered patched robe, his feet in rush sandals; leaning on his staff, he tilted his face up to the sky and said, "The northwest wind has risen — tomorrow it will clear." Before he had finished speaking, a little pug dog came running out from behind him, and barked wildly at Xingzhe.老者卻才轉過頭來，看見行者捧著缽盂。Only then did the old man turn his head and see Xingzhe holding his alms bowl.打個問訊道：「老施主，我和尚是東土大唐欽差上西天拜佛求經者，適路過寶方，我師父腹中飢餒，特造尊府募化一齋。」老者聞言，點頭頓杖道：「長老，你且休化齋，你走錯路了。」行者道：「不錯。」老者道：「往西天大路，在那直北下。Xingzhe made a bow of greeting and said, "Venerable benefactor, this monk is an envoy from the Great Tang of the Eastern Land, bound for the Western Heaven to worship Buddha and seek the scriptures. Passing just now through your honored district, my master's stomach is empty with hunger, so I have come especially to your esteemed household to beg a meal." Hearing this, the old man nodded, thumped his staff, and said, "Elder, hold off on begging for food — you have taken the wrong road." Xingzhe said, "It is not wrong." The old man said, "The main road to the Western Heaven lies due north from here.此間到那裡有千里之遙，還不去找大路而行？」行者笑道：「正是直北下。From this place it is a thousand li distant — why not go find the main road and travel on it?" Xingzhe laughed and said, "It is indeed due north.我師父現在大路上端坐，等我化齋哩。」那老者道：「這和尚胡說了。My master is at this very moment sitting upright on the main road, waiting for me to bring back food." The old man said, "This monk talks nonsense.你師父在大路上等你化齋，似這千里之遙，就會走路，也須得六七日，走回去又要六七日，卻不餓壞他也？」行者笑道：「不瞞老施主說，我才然離了師父，還不上一盞熱茶之時，卻就走到此處。Your master waits on the main road for you to beg food, and yet it is a thousand li distant — even walking fast, it would take six or seven days to get there, and another six or seven days to walk back — would that not starve him half to death?" Xingzhe laughed and said, "Not to hide it from you, venerable benefactor, I only just left my master, and less than the time it takes to drink a cup of hot tea has passed, yet already I have walked to this place.如今化了齋，還要尚趕去作午齋哩。」Now, once I have begged the food, I still must hurry back in time to make it his noon meal."

行者随步观看庄景，只听得呀的一声，柴扉响处，走出一个老者，手拖藜杖，头顶羊裘，身穿破衲，足踏蒲鞋，拄著杖，仰身朝天道：「西北风起，明日晴了。」说不了，后边跑出一个哈巴狗儿来，望著行者，汪汪的乱吠。老者却才转过头来，看见行者捧著钵盂。打个问讯道：「老施主，我和尚是东土大唐钦差上西天拜佛求经者，适路过宝方，我师父腹中饥馁，特造尊府募化一斋。」老者闻言，点头顿杖道：「长老，你且休化斋，你走错路了。」行者道：「不错。」老者道：「往西天大路，在那直北下。此间到那里有千里之遥，还不去找大路而行？」行者笑道：「正是直北下。我师父现在大路上端坐，等我化斋哩。」那老者道：「这和尚胡说了。你师父在大路上等你化斋，似这千里之遥，就会走路，也须得六七日，走回去又要六七日，却不饿坏他也？」行者笑道：「不瞒老施主说，我才然离了师父，还不上一盏热茶之时，却就走到此处。如今化了斋，还要尚赶去作午斋哩。」

老者見說，心中害怕道：「這和尚是鬼，是鬼。」急抽身往裡就走。Hearing this, the old man grew afraid at heart and said, "This monk is a ghost, a ghost." He hastily turned and made to go back inside.行者一把扯住道：「施主那裡去？Xingzhe grabbed hold of him and said, "Benefactor, where are you going?有齋快化些兒。」老者道：「不方便，不方便，別轉一家兒罷。」行者道：「你這施主好不會事。If you have food, quickly spare some." The old man said, "It is inconvenient, inconvenient — go try another household instead." Xingzhe said, "You, benefactor, are quite unreasonable.你說我離此有千里之遙，若再轉一家，卻不又有千里？You tell me it is a thousand li from here — if I go try another household, would that not again be a thousand li away?真是餓殺我師父也。」那老者道：「實不瞞你說，我家老小六七口，才淘了三升米下鍋，還未曾煮熟。Truly you would starve my master to death." The old man said, "Truth be told, my household has six or seven mouths, old and young, and we have only just rinsed three sheng of rice and put it in the pot — it is not yet cooked.你且到別處去轉轉再來。」行者道：「古人云：『走三家不如坐一家。』我貧僧在此等一等罷。」那老者見纏得緊，惱了，舉藜杖就打。Go elsewhere for now, and come back again later." Xingzhe said, "The ancients said, 'Better to sit at one house than to walk to three.' This poor monk will just wait here." Seeing himself pestered so insistently, the old man grew angry and raised his goosefoot cane to strike.行者公然不懼，被他照光頭上打了七八下，只當與他拂癢。Xingzhe stood there entirely unafraid, and though struck squarely on his bald head seven or eight times, he took it merely as a scratch to relieve an itch.那老者道：「這是個撞頭的和尚。」行者笑道：「老官兒，憑你怎麼打，只要記得杖數明白：一杖一升米，慢慢量來。」那老者聞言，急丟了藜杖，跑進去把門關了，只嚷：「有鬼，有鬼。」慌得那一家兒戰戰兢兢，把前後門俱關了。The old man said, "This is a monk who courts a beating." Xingzhe laughed and said, "Old sir, no matter how you strike me, just be sure to keep clear count of the blows — one blow, one sheng of rice; we'll measure it out slowly." Hearing this, the old man hastily flung down his cane, ran inside, and shut the door, shouting only, "There's a ghost, there's a ghost!" This so alarmed the whole household that they trembled with fear and shut both the front and back doors tight.

老者见说，心中害怕道：「这和尚是鬼，是鬼。」急抽身往里就走。行者一把扯住道：「施主那里去？有斋快化些儿。」老者道：「不方便，不方便，别转一家儿罢。」行者道：「你这施主好不会事。你说我离此有千里之遥，若再转一家，却不又有千里？真是饿杀我师父也。」那老者道：「实不瞒你说，我家老小六七口，才淘了三升米下锅，还未曾煮熟。你且到别处去转转再来。」行者道：「古人云：『走三家不如坐一家。』我贫僧在此等一等罢。」那老者见缠得紧，恼了，举藜杖就打。行者公然不惧，被他照光头上打了七八下，只当与他拂痒。那老者道：「这是个撞头的和尚。」行者笑道：「老官儿，凭你怎么打，只要记得杖数明白：一杖一升米，慢慢量来。」那老者闻言，急丢了藜杖，跑进去把门关了，只嚷：「有鬼，有鬼。」慌得那一家儿战战兢兢，把前后门俱关了。

行者見他關了門，心中暗想：「這老賊才說淘米下鍋，不知是虛是實？Seeing him shut the door, Xingzhe thought secretly to himself, "This old scoundrel just said he'd rinsed rice and put it in the pot — who knows whether that was true or false?常言道：『道化賢良釋化愚。』且等老孫進去看看。」好大聖，捻著訣，使個隱身遁法，徑走入廚中看處，果然那鍋裡氣騰騰的，煮了半鍋乾飯。As the common saying goes, 'The virtuous are converted by the Way, the foolish by the Buddhist teaching.' Let old Sun just go in and have a look." Splendid Great Sage — he formed a spell with his fingers, worked a spell of invisibility, and went straight into the kitchen to look, and sure enough the pot was steaming away, with half a potful of dry rice already cooked.就把缽盂往裡一掗，滿滿的掗了一缽盂，即駕雲回轉不題。He at once thrust his alms bowl right in and scooped it brimful, then straightaway mounted his cloud and turned back — but no more of that for now.

行者见他关了门，心中暗想：「这老贼才说淘米下锅，不知是虚是实？常言道：『道化贤良释化愚。』且等老孙进去看看。」好大圣，捻著诀，使个隐身遁法，径走入厨中看处，果然那锅里气腾腾的，煮了半锅干饭。就把钵盂往里一挜，满满的挜了一钵盂，即驾云回转不题。

卻說唐僧坐在圈子裡，等待多時，不見行者回來，欠身悵望道：「這猴子往那裡化齋去了？」八戒在傍笑道：「知他往那裡耍子去來?Now tell of Tang Seng, sitting within the circle, waiting a long while and not seeing Xingzhe return; he leaned forward and gazed longingly into the distance, saying, "Where has that monkey gone to beg food?" Bajie, at his side, laughed and said, "Who knows where he's gone off to play?化甚麼齋，卻教我們在此坐牢。」三藏道：「怎麼謂之坐牢？」八戒道：「師父，你原來不知，古人劃地為牢?Some 'begging for food' — instead he has us sitting here as if in prison." Sanzang said, "How can you call it sitting in prison?" Bajie said, "Master, you truly do not know. The ancients used to mark out the ground as a prison —他將棍子劃個圈兒，強似鐵壁銅牆，假如有虎狼妖獸來時，如何擋得他住？he drew a circle with his staff, claiming it stronger than a wall of iron and bronze; but suppose tigers, wolves, or evil beasts should come — how could that hold them off?只好白白的送與他吃罷了。」三藏道：「悟能，憑你怎麼處治？」八戒道：「此間又不藏風，又不避冷，若依老豬，只該順著路，往西且行。It would only serve to hand us over to them to eat, for nothing." Sanzang said, "Wukong, what do you propose we do about it, then?" Bajie said, "This place neither shelters us from wind nor keeps out the cold; if it were up to old Hog, we should simply follow the road and press on west.師兄化了齋，駕了雲，必然來快，讓他趕來。Once elder brother has begged the food and mounted his cloud, he is bound to come quickly, and we can let him catch up to us.如有齋，吃了再走。If there's food, we can eat it and go on.如今坐了這一會，老大腳冷！」As it is, having sat here this good while, my feet have grown terribly cold!"

却说唐僧坐在圈子里，等待多时，不见行者回来，欠身怅望道：「这猴子往那里化斋去了？」八戒在傍笑道：「知他往那里耍子去来?化甚么斋，却教我们在此坐牢。」三藏道：「怎么谓之坐牢？」八戒道：「师父，你原来不知，古人划地为牢?他将棍子划个圈儿，强似铁壁铜墙，假如有虎狼妖兽来时，如何挡得他住？只好白白的送与他吃罢了。」三藏道：「悟能，凭你怎么处治？」八戒道：「此间又不藏风，又不避冷，若依老猪，只该顺著路，往西且行。师兄化了斋，驾了云，必然来快，让他赶来。如有斋，吃了再走。如今坐了这一会，老大脚冷！」

三藏聞此言，就是晦氣星到了。When Sanzang heard these words, it was as if his unlucky star had arrived.遂依獃子，一齊出了圈外。So he went along with the idiot, and together they all stepped outside the circle.八戒牽了馬，沙僧擔了擔，那長老順路步行前進。Bajie led the horse, Sha Seng shouldered the carrying-pole, and the elder walked on ahead along the road.不一時，到了樓閣之所，卻原來是坐北向南之家。Before long, they reached the place with the towers and pavilions, which turned out to be a household facing south with its back to the north.門外八字粉牆，有一座倒垂蓮升斗門樓，都是五色裝的。Outside the gate stood a splayed white-plastered wall, and there was a gate-tower with an inverted-lotus, tou-shaped roof, all decorated in five colors.那門兒半開半掩。The gate stood half open, half closed.八戒就把馬拴在門枕石鼓上；Bajie tethered the horse to the drum-shaped stone at the gate's threshold;沙僧歇了擔子；Sha Seng set down the carrying-pole;三藏畏風，坐於門限之上。Sanzang, fearing the wind, sat down upon the threshold of the gate.八戒道：「師父，這所在想是公侯之宅，相輔之家。Bajie said, "Master, this place must be the residence of some duke or marquis, some minister's household.前門外無人，想必都在裡面烘火。There is no one outside the front gate — they must all be inside warming themselves by the fire.你們坐著，讓我進去看看。」唐僧道：「仔細耶，莫要衝撞了人家。」獃子道：「我曉得。You all sit here while I go in and take a look." Tang Seng said, "Be careful — do not offend the people of the house." The idiot said, "I know.自從歸正禪門，這一向也學了些禮數，不比那村莽之夫也。」Ever since I turned to the true gate of Chan, I have of late learned a bit of propriety — I'm not like some crude, rustic fellow."

三藏闻此言，就是晦气星到了。遂依呆子，一齐出了圈外。八戒牵了马，沙僧担了担，那长老顺路步行前进。不一时，到了楼阁之所，却原来是坐北向南之家。门外八字粉墙，有一座倒垂莲升斗门楼，都是五色装的。那门儿半开半掩。八戒就把马拴在门枕石鼓上；沙僧歇了担子；三藏畏风，坐于门限之上。八戒道：「师父，这所在想是公侯之宅，相辅之家。前门外无人，想必都在里面烘火。你们坐著，让我进去看看。」唐僧道：「仔细耶，莫要冲撞了人家。」呆子道：「我晓得。自从归正禅门，这一向也学了些礼数，不比那村莽之夫也。」

那獃子把釘鈀撒在腰裡，整一整青錦直裰，斯斯文文，走入門裡。The idiot tucked his rake into his belt, straightened his dark brocade robe, and, all prim and proper, walked in through the gate.只見是三間大廳，簾櫳高控，靜悄悄全無人跡，也無桌椅家火。He saw only a great hall of three bays, its curtains and lattices raised high, utterly silent with no trace of a person, and not even a table, chair, or household implement to be seen.轉過屏門，往裡又走，乃是一座穿堂。He passed round a screen-door and walked further inside, coming to a covered passage hall.堂後有一座大樓，樓上窗格半開，隱隱見一頂黃綾帳幔。Behind the hall stood a great tower-building, its upper windows half open, within which could be dimly seen a canopy of yellow damask silk.獃子道：「想是有人怕冷，還睡哩。」他也不分內外，拽步只管走上樓來。The idiot said, "I suppose someone who feels the cold is still asleep in there." Without regard for whether it was proper or not, he strode straight up to the tower.用手掀開看時，把獃子諕了一個躘踵。He reached out and lifted the curtain to look, and it gave the idiot such a fright that he stumbled backward.原來那帳裡象牙床上，白媸媸的一堆骸骨，骷髏有巴斗大，腿挺骨有四五尺長。It turned out that upon the ivory bed within that canopy lay a pale, ghastly-white heap of bones — the skull was as large as a peck-basket, and the leg bones stretched a good four or five feet long.那獃子定了性，止不住腮邊淚落，對骷髏點頭嘆云：「你不知是：The idiot steadied his nerves, and unable to hold back tears streaming down his cheeks, nodded toward the skeleton and sighed, saying, "You do not know — it is that:

八戒正才感嘆，只見那帳幔後有火光一幌。Just as Bajie was in the midst of his lament, he saw a flash of firelight behind the curtain.獃子道：「想是有侍奉香火之人在後面哩。」急轉步，過帳觀看，卻是穿樓的窗扇透光。The idiot said, "I suppose there must be someone tending the incense fire back there." He hurried over, passed the curtain, and looked, only to find it was light shining through the window sash of the tower passage.那壁廂有一張彩漆的桌子，桌子上亂搭著幾件錦繡綿衣。Over against the wall there stood a lacquered table, upon which several embroidered silk garments lay tossed in disarray.獃子提起來看時，卻是三件納錦背心兒。The idiot picked them up to look, and found they were three quilted brocade vests.

八戒正才感叹，只见那帐幔后有火光一幌。呆子道：「想是有侍奉香火之人在后面哩。」急转步，过帐观看，却是穿楼的窗扇透光。那壁厢有一张彩漆的桌子，桌子上乱搭著几件锦绣绵衣。呆子提起来看时，却是三件纳锦背心儿。

他也不管好歹，拿下樓來，出廳房，徑到門外道：「師父，這裡全沒人煙，是一所亡靈之宅。Without a thought for whether this was right or wrong, he took them down from the tower, went out through the hall, and straight out the gate, saying, "Master, there is not a soul to be found in there — it is a house of the dead.老豬走進裡面，直至高樓之上，黃綾帳內，有一堆骸骨。Old Hog went inside, straight up to the high tower, and within a yellow damask canopy found a heap of bones.串樓傍有三件納錦的背心，被我拿來了，也是我們一程兒造化。Beside the passage tower there were three quilted brocade vests, which I have brought along — it is also a stroke of good fortune for us on this journey.此時天氣寒冷，正當用處。The weather is bitter cold just now, and this is exactly the moment to put them to use.師父，且脫了褊衫，把他且穿在底下，受用受用，免得吃冷。」三藏道：「不可，不可。Master, do take off your cassock for a moment and put one of these on underneath — enjoy the comfort of it, and spare yourself the cold." Sanzang said, "No, no, that will not do.律云：『公取竊取皆為盜。』倘或有人知覺，趕上我們，到了當官，斷然是一個竊盜之罪。The law says, 'Whether openly taken or secretly stolen, both are theft.' Should someone find out and come after us, and it reach the officials, it would surely be judged the crime of theft.還不送進去與他搭在原處。Take them back inside at once and lay them back where they were.我們在此避風坐一坐，等悟空來時走路。We shall sit here a while to shelter from the wind, and set off again once Wukong returns.出家人不要這等愛小。」八戒道：「四顧無人，雖雞犬亦不知之，但只我們知道，誰人告我？One who has left the household life must not be so covetous of trifling gain." Bajie said, "Looking all about, there's not a soul in sight — even the chickens and dogs would know nothing of it. Only we ourselves know; who is there to report us?有何證見？What proof could there be?就如拾得的一般，那裡論甚麼公取竊取也？」三藏道：「你胡做啊。It is just the same as picking up something lost — why bother arguing over 'openly taken' or 'secretly stolen'?" Sanzang said, "You are talking recklessly.雖是人不知之，天何蓋焉？Even if no man knows of it, how could Heaven fail to see it?玄帝垂訓云：『暗室虧心，神目如電。』趁早送去還他，莫愛非禮之物。」The Dark Emperor left this teaching: 'A guilty heart in a hidden chamber — the eyes of the gods are like lightning.' Go quickly and return them, and do not covet things that are not rightfully yours."

他也不管好歹，拿下楼来，出厅房，径到门外道：「师父，这里全没人烟，是一所亡灵之宅。老猪走进里面，直至高楼之上，黄绫帐内，有一堆骸骨。串楼傍有三件纳锦的背心，被我拿来了，也是我们一程儿造化。此时天气寒冷，正当用处。师父，且脱了褊衫，把他且穿在底下，受用受用，免得吃冷。」三藏道：「不可，不可。律云：『公取窃取皆为盗。』倘或有人知觉，赶上我们，到了当官，断然是一个窃盗之罪。还不送进去与他搭在原处。我们在此避风坐一坐，等悟空来时走路。出家人不要这等爱小。」八戒道：「四顾无人，虽鸡犬亦不知之，但只我们知道，谁人告我？有何证见？就如拾得的一般，那里论甚么公取窃取也？」三藏道：「你胡做啊。虽是人不知之，天何盖焉？玄帝垂训云：『暗室亏心，神目如电。』趁早送去还他，莫爱非礼之物。」

那獃子莫想肯聽，對唐僧笑道：「師父啊，我自為人，也穿了幾件背心，不曾見這等納錦的。The idiot had no mind at all to listen, and said to Tang Seng with a laugh, "Master, ah, in all my life I have worn a good many vests, but never one so finely quilted with brocade as this.你不穿，且待老豬穿一穿，試試新，晤晤脊背。If you won't wear it, then let old Hog put one on for now, just to try it out fresh, and warm up my back a bit.等師兄來，脫了還他走路。」沙僧道：「既如此說，我也穿一件兒。」兩個齊脫了上蓋直裰，將背心套上。When elder brother returns, I'll take it off and give it back to them before we set off." Sha Seng said, "Since you put it that way, I'll put one on too." The two of them together took off their outer robes and put the vests on.才緊帶子，不知怎麼立站不穩，撲的一跌。No sooner had they drawn the cords tight than, for some reason, they could not stand steady, and fell with a thump.原來這背心兒賽過綁縛手，霎時間，把他兩個背剪手貼心綑了。It turned out these vests were like binding ropes for capturing prisoners — in an instant they had bound the two of them, arms pinned behind their backs, hands clasped to their chests.慌得個三藏跌足報怨，急忙來解，那裡便解得開。This threw Sanzang into a panic; stamping his feet and complaining, he hurried over to untie them, but there was no way to loosen the bonds.三個人在那裡吆喝之聲不絕，卻早驚動了魔頭。The three of them there kept up an unceasing clamor of shouting, and this soon roused the demon lord.

那呆子莫想肯听，对唐僧笑道：「师父啊，我自为人，也穿了几件背心，不曾见这等纳锦的。你不穿，且待老猪穿一穿，试试新，晤晤脊背。等师兄来，脱了还他走路。」沙僧道：「既如此说，我也穿一件儿。」两个齐脱了上盖直裰，将背心套上。才紧带子，不知怎么立站不稳，扑的一跌。原来这背心儿赛过绑缚手，霎时间，把他两个背剪手贴心捆了。慌得个三藏跌足报怨，急忙来解，那里便解得开。三个人在那里吆喝之声不绝，却早惊动了魔头。

原來那座樓房果是妖精點化的，終日在此拿人。It turned out that this tower-building was indeed conjured up by a demon spirit, who used it daily to catch people.他在洞裡正坐，忽聞得怨恨之聲，急出門來看，果見綑住幾個人了。He was sitting in his cave just then, when suddenly he heard the sound of angry complaint; he hurried out to look, and sure enough saw several people bound fast.妖魔即喚小妖，同到那廂，收了樓臺房屋之形。The demon at once called his little demons, and together they went over to that place and dissolved the illusion of the towers and dwellings.把唐僧攙住，牽了白馬，挑了行李，將八戒、沙僧一齊捉到洞裡。They took hold of Tang Seng, led away the white horse, carried off the luggage, and seized Bajie and Sha Seng together, taking them all to the cave.老妖魔登臺高坐，眾小妖把唐僧推近臺邊，跪伏於地。The old demon king climbed up and sat high upon his dais, while the little demons pushed Tang Seng forward to the edge of the dais, where he knelt prostrate on the ground.妖魔問道：「你是那方和尚？The demon asked, "What monk are you, from what region?怎麼這般膽大，白日裡偷盜我的衣服？」三藏滴淚告曰：「貧僧是東土大唐欽差往西天取經的。How dare you be so bold as to steal my garments in broad daylight?" Sanzang, tears falling, pleaded, "This poor monk is an envoy from the Great Tang of the Eastern Land, sent to the Western Heaven to fetch the scriptures.因腹中飢餒，著大徒弟去化齋未回，不曾依得他的言語，誤撞仙庭避風。Because my stomach was empty with hunger, I sent my eldest disciple to beg food, and he had not yet returned; not having followed his instructions, I mistakenly wandered into this immortal hall to shelter from the wind.不期我這兩個徒弟愛小，拿出這衣物來。I never expected that these two disciples of mine, coveting trifling gain, would bring out these garments.貧僧決不敢壞心，當教送還本處。This poor monk truly dared not harbor any ill intent, and had already told them to return the things to their original place.他不聽吾言，要穿此晤晤脊背，不料中了大王機會，把貧僧拿來。They would not heed my words, wishing instead to put them on to warm their backs, and never expected it would fall right into the Great King's trap, whereby this poor monk was captured.萬望慈憫，留我殘生，求取真經，永註大王恩情，回東土千古傳揚也。」那妖魔笑道：「我這裡常聽得人言：有人吃了唐僧一塊肉，髮白還黑，齒落更生。I beg most earnestly for your mercy — spare my remaining life, that I may go on to fetch the true scriptures, and I shall forever record the Great King's kindness, proclaiming it through the ages upon my return to the Eastern Land." The demon laughed and said, "Here I have often heard people say: whoever eats a piece of Tang Seng's flesh will have white hair turn black again, and fallen teeth grow anew.幸今日不請自來，還指望饒你哩。Fortunately, you've come today uninvited, so you may still hope to be spared.你那大徒弟叫做甚麼名字？What is your senior disciple's name?往何方化齋？」八戒聞言，即開口稱揚道：「我師兄乃五百年前大鬧天宮齊天大聖孫悟空也。」"Where did he go to beg for food?" Hearing this, Bajie immediately spoke up in praise, saying, "My elder martial brother is none other than Sun Wukong, the Great Sage Equal to Heaven, who wreaked havoc in Heaven five hundred years ago."

原来那座楼房果是妖精点化的，终日在此拿人。他在洞里正坐，忽闻得怨恨之声，急出门来看，果见捆住几个人了。妖魔即唤小妖，同到那厢，收了楼台房屋之形。把唐僧搀住，牵了白马，挑了行李，将八戒、沙僧一齐捉到洞里。老妖魔登台高坐，众小妖把唐僧推近台边，跪伏于地。妖魔问道：「你是那方和尚？怎么这般胆大，白日里偷盗我的衣服？」三藏滴泪告曰：「贫僧是东土大唐钦差往西天取经的。因腹中饥馁，著大徒弟去化斋未回，不曾依得他的言语，误撞仙庭避风。不期我这两个徒弟爱小，拿出这衣物来。贫僧决不敢坏心，当教送还本处。他不听吾言，要穿此晤晤脊背，不料中了大王机会，把贫僧拿来。万望慈悯，留我残生，求取真经，永注大王恩情，回东土千古传扬也。」那妖魔笑道：「我这里常听得人言：有人吃了唐僧一块肉，发白还黑，齿落更生。幸今日不请自来，还指望饶你哩。你那大徒弟叫做甚么名字？往何方化斋？」八戒闻言，即开口称扬道：「我师兄乃五百年前大闹天宫齐天大圣孙悟空也。」

那妖魔聽說是齊天大聖孫悟空，老大有些悚懼，口內不言，心中暗想道：「久聞那廝神通廣大，如今不期而會。」教：「小的們，把唐僧綑了；When the demon heard it was Sun Wukong, the Great Sage Equal to Heaven, he felt a great deal of fear; though he said nothing aloud, in his heart he thought, "I have long heard that fellow's magic powers are vast — and now, unexpectedly, we meet." He ordered, "Little ones, tie up Tang Seng;將那兩個解下寶貝，換兩條繩子，也綑了。take the treasures off those other two, replace them with two ropes, and tie them up as well.且擡在後邊，待我拿住他大徒弟，一發刷洗，卻好湊籠蒸吃。」眾小妖答應一聲，把三人一齊綑了，擡在後邊。"Carry them to the back for now; once I've caught his senior disciple, I'll scrub them all clean together, and it will be just right to fill the steamer and eat them." The little demons answered with one voice, tied all three of them up together, and carried them to the back.將白馬拴在槽頭，行李挑在屋裡。They tethered the white horse at the trough and carried the luggage into the room.眾妖都磨兵器，準備擒拿行者不題。All the demons sharpened their weapons, preparing to capture Xingzhe — but let us leave that aside for now.

那妖魔听说是齐天大圣孙悟空，老大有些悚惧，口内不言，心中暗想道：「久闻那厮神通广大，如今不期而会。」教：「小的们，把唐僧捆了；将那两个解下宝贝，换两条绳子，也捆了。且抬在后边，待我拿住他大徒弟，一发刷洗，却好凑笼蒸吃。」众小妖答应一声，把三人一齐捆了，抬在后边。将白马拴在槽头，行李挑在屋里。众妖都磨兵器，准备擒拿行者不题。

卻說孫行者自南莊人家攝了一缽盂齋飯，駕雲回返舊路，徑至山坡平處，按下雲頭，早已不見唐僧，不知何往，棍劃的圈子還在，只是人馬都不見了。Now to tell of Sun Xingzhe: having gathered a bowl of vegetarian food from a household in the southern village, he rode his cloud back along the old road, went straight to the flat spot on the mountain slope, and lowered his cloud — but Tang Seng was already gone, nowhere to be seen; the circle drawn with his staff was still there, but the men and horse had all vanished.回看那樓臺處所，亦俱無矣，惟見山根怪石。Turning to look back at where the towers and halls had stood, they too were gone entirely; he saw only strange rocks at the foot of the mountain.行者心驚道：「不消說了，他們定是遭那毒手也。」急依路看著馬蹄，向西而趕。Startled, Xingzhe said, "There's no need to ask — they must have fallen into that vicious hand." He hurriedly followed the road, watching the horse's hoofprints, and chased westward.

却说孙行者自南庄人家摄了一钵盂斋饭，驾云回返旧路，径至山坡平处，按下云头，早已不见唐僧，不知何往，棍划的圈子还在，只是人马都不见了。回看那楼台处所，亦俱无矣，惟见山根怪石。行者心惊道：「不消说了，他们定是遭那毒手也。」急依路看著马蹄，向西而赶。

行有五六里，正在悽愴之際，只聞得北坡外有人言語。After traveling five or six li, just as he was in the midst of his grief, he suddenly heard voices beyond the northern slope.看時，乃一個老翁，氈衣蓋體，暖帽蒙頭，足下踏一雙半新半舊的油靴，手持著一根龍頭拐棒，後邊跟一個年幼的僮僕，折一枝臘梅花，自坡前念歌而走。Looking closer, he saw an old man, his body covered in a felt robe, a warm cap over his head, his feet in a pair of half-new, half-worn oiled boots, holding a dragon-headed walking staff; behind him followed a young page boy who had broken off a branch of wintersweet blossom, and the two were walking along in front of the slope, chanting a song.行者放下缽盂，覿面道個問訊，叫：「老公公，貧僧問訊了。」那老翁即便回禮道：「長老那裡來的？」行者道：「我們東土來的，往西天拜佛求經，一行師徒四眾。Xingzhe set down his alms bowl, came face to face with the old man, and greeted him with a bow, saying, "Venerable elder, this poor monk offers his greetings." The old man at once returned the courtesy, saying, "Where has the elder come from?" Xingzhe said, "We have come from the Land of the East, bound for the Western Heaven to worship the Buddha and seek scriptures — master and disciples, four of us in all.我因師父飢了，特去化齋，教他三眾坐在那山坡平處相候。Because my master was hungry, I went specially to beg for food, and told the other three to sit and wait for me at that flat spot on the mountain slope.及回來不見，不知往那條路上去了。When I returned, they were nowhere to be found, and I don't know which road they took.動問公公，可曾看見？」老者聞言，呵呵冷笑道：「你那三眾，可有一個長嘴大耳的麼？」行者道：「有有有。」「又有一個晦氣色臉的，牽著一匹白馬，領著一個白臉的胖和尚麼？」行者道：「是是是。」老翁道：「你們走錯路了，你休尋他，各人顧命去也。」行者道：「那白臉者是我師父，那怪樣者是我師弟。May I ask, venerable sir, did you happen to see them?" Hearing this, the old man gave a cold chuckle and said, "Among those three of yours, was there one with a long snout and big ears?" Xingzhe said, "Yes, yes, yes." "And was there another with an unlucky, dark complexion, leading a white horse, guiding a fat monk with a pale face?" Xingzhe said, "Yes, yes, yes." The old man said, "You have taken the wrong road. Don't go looking for them — each of you had best save your own life and go your own way." Xingzhe said, "The pale-faced one is my master, and the strange-looking one is my fellow disciple.我與他共發虔心，要往西天取經，如何不尋他去？」老翁道：「我才然從此過時，看見他們錯走了路徑，闖入妖魔口裡去了。」行者道：「煩公公指教指教，是個甚麼妖魔？He and I together made a devout vow to go to the Western Heaven to fetch scriptures — how could I not go looking for him?" The old man said, "I just passed by here a moment ago, and I saw them take the wrong path and rush straight into a demon's mouth." Xingzhe said, "I beg you, venerable sir, please instruct me — what kind of demon is it?居於何方我好上門取索他等，往西天去也。」老翁道：「這座山叫做金兜山。Where does it live, so that I may go to its door and demand them back, and then continue on to the Western Heaven?" The old man said, "This mountain is called Jindou Shan, Mount Golden Helmet.山前有個金兜洞，那洞中有個獨角兕大王。In front of the mountain there is a cave called Jindou Dong, the Golden Helmet Cave, and in that cave lives the Great King Single-Horned Rhinoceros.那大王神通廣大，威武高強。That Great King has vast magic powers and is mighty and formidable.那三眾此回斷沒命了，你若去尋他，只怕連你也難保，不如不去之為愈也。Those three of yours are surely doomed to die this time; if you go looking for him, I fear even you may not be able to save yourself — it would be better not to go at all.我也不敢阻你，也不敢留你，只憑你心中度量。」I dare not stop you, nor dare I detain you — it is entirely up to your own judgment."

行有五六里，正在凄怆之际，只闻得北坡外有人言语。看时，乃一个老翁，毡衣盖体，暖帽蒙头，足下踏一双半新半旧的油靴，手持著一根龙头拐棒，后边跟一个年幼的僮仆，折一枝腊梅花，自坡前念歌而走。行者放下钵盂，觌面道个问讯，叫：「老公公，贫僧问讯了。」那老翁即便回礼道：「长老那里来的？」行者道：「我们东土来的，往西天拜佛求经，一行师徒四众。我因师父饥了，特去化斋，教他三众坐在那山坡平处相候。及回来不见，不知往那条路上去了。动问公公，可曾看见？」老者闻言，呵呵冷笑道：「你那三众，可有一个长嘴大耳的么？」行者道：「有有有。」「又有一个晦气色脸的，牵著一匹白马，领著一个白脸的胖和尚么？」行者道：「是是是。」老翁道：「你们走错路了，你休寻他，各人顾命去也。」行者道：「那白脸者是我师父，那怪样者是我师弟。我与他共发虔心，要往西天取经，如何不寻他去？」老翁道：「我才然从此过时，看见他们错走了路径，闯入妖魔口里去了。」行者道：「烦公公指教指教，是个甚么妖魔？居于何方我好上门取索他等，往西天去也。」老翁道：「这座山叫做金兜山。山前有个金兜洞，那洞中有个独角兕大王。那大王神通广大，威武高强。那三众此回断没命了，你若去寻他，只怕连你也难保，不如不去之为愈也。我也不敢阻你，也不敢留你，只凭你心中度量。」

行者再拜稱謝道：「多蒙公公指教。Xingzhe bowed again in thanks, saying, "I am most grateful for your instruction, venerable sir.我豈有不尋之理？」把這齋飯倒與他，將這空缽盂自家收拾。How could there be any reason for me not to search for them?" He poured out the vegetarian food for the old man, and kept the empty bowl for himself to carry.那老翁放下拐棒，接了缽盂，遞與僮僕，現出本相，雙雙跪下磕頭，叫：「大聖，小神不敢隱瞞。The old man set down his staff, took the bowl, handed it to the page boy, and then revealed his true form; the two of them knelt down together and kowtowed, saying, "Great Sage, this lesser god dares not conceal the truth.我們兩個就是此山山神、土地，在此候接大聖。The two of us are the mountain god and the local land god of this mountain, waiting here to receive the Great Sage.這齋飯連缽盂，小神收下，讓大聖身輕好施法力。This lesser god will keep this food along with the bowl, so that the Great Sage may travel light and be free to exercise his magic powers.待救唐僧出難，將此齋飯還奉唐僧，方顯得大聖至恭至孝。」行者喝道：「你這毛鬼討打。Once you have rescued Tang Seng from his difficulty, this food will be returned and offered to Tang Seng, so as to show how truly reverent and filial the Great Sage is." Xingzhe shouted, "You hairy ghost, you're asking for a beating!既知我到，何不早迎，卻又這般藏頭露尾，是甚道理？」土地道：「大聖性急，小神不敢造次，恐犯威顏，故此隱像告知。」行者息怒道：「你且記打。If you knew I was coming, why didn't you come to greet me sooner, instead of hiding your head and showing your tail like this — what's the meaning of that?" The local god said, "The Great Sage is quick-tempered, and this lesser god dared not act rashly, fearing to offend your awesome countenance; that is why I hid my true form to inform you." Xingzhe, calming his anger, said, "Just remember, you owe me a beating for that.好生與我收著缽盂，待我拿那妖精去來。」土地、山神遵領。Take good care of the bowl for me while I go and capture that demon." The local god and the mountain god respectfully obeyed.

行者再拜称谢道：「多蒙公公指教。我岂有不寻之理？」把这斋饭倒与他，将这空钵盂自家收拾。那老翁放下拐棒，接了钵盂，递与僮仆，现出本相，双双跪下磕头，叫：「大圣，小神不敢隐瞒。我们两个就是此山山神、土地，在此候接大圣。这斋饭连钵盂，小神收下，让大圣身轻好施法力。待救唐僧出难，将此斋饭还奉唐僧，方显得大圣至恭至孝。」行者喝道：「你这毛鬼讨打。既知我到，何不早迎，却又这般藏头露尾，是甚道理？」土地道：「大圣性急，小神不敢造次，恐犯威颜，故此隐像告知。」行者息怒道：「你且记打。好生与我收著钵盂，待我拿那妖精去来。」土地、山神遵领。

這大聖卻才束一束虎筋絛，拽起虎皮裙，執著金箍棒，徑奔山前，找尋妖洞。The Great Sage then tightened his tiger-sinew sash, hitched up his tiger-skin skirt, took up his gold-banded staff, and went straight to the front of the mountain to search for the demon's cave.轉過山崖，只見那亂石磷磷，翠崖邊有兩扇石門，門外有許多小妖，在那裡掄槍舞劍。Rounding the cliff, he saw jagged rocks glinting everywhere, and beside the emerald cliff stood two stone doors; outside the doors many little demons were wielding spears and swinging swords.真個是：Truly it was thus:

這大聖觀看不盡，拽開步徑至門前，厲聲高叫道：「那小妖，你快進去與你那洞主說，我本是唐朝聖僧徒弟齊天大聖孫悟空。The Great Sage could not take in the whole sight; he strode forward straight to the gate and called out sternly in a loud voice, "You little demons, hurry inside and tell your cave master that I am none other than the disciple of the holy monk of Tang, the Great Sage Equal to Heaven, Sun Wukong.快教他送我師父出來，免教你等喪了性命。」Tell him to quickly send my master out, and spare you all from losing your lives."

这大圣观看不尽，拽开步径至门前，厉声高叫道：「那小妖，你快进去与你那洞主说，我本是唐朝圣僧徒弟齐天大圣孙悟空。快教他送我师父出来，免教你等丧了性命。」

那夥小妖急入洞裡報道：「大王，前面有一個毛臉勾嘴的和尚，稱是齊天大聖孫悟空，來要他師父哩。」那魔王聞得此言，滿心歡喜道：「正要他來哩。That band of little demons hurried into the cave to report, "Great King, outside there is a hairy-faced, hook-mouthed monk, claiming to be the Great Sage Equal to Heaven, Sun Wukong, who has come to demand his master back." When the demon king heard this, he was filled with joy and said, "That is exactly who I wanted to come.我自離了本宮，下降塵世，更不曾試試武藝。Ever since I left my palace and descended into the mortal world, I have not yet had the chance to test my martial skill.今日他來，必是個對手。」即命小妖們取出兵器。Now that he has come today, he must surely be a worthy opponent." He at once ordered the little demons to bring out his weapon.那洞中大小群妖，一個個精神抖擻，即忙擡出一根丈二長的點鋼槍，遞與老怪。All the demons in the cave, great and small, roused themselves in high spirits, and hastily carried out a twelve-foot-long tempered steel spear, handing it to the old demon.老怪傳令，教：「小的們，各要整齊。The old demon issued an order: "Little ones, each of you get in proper formation.進前者賞，退後者誅！」眾妖得令，隨著老怪，走出門來，叫道：「那個是孫悟空？」Whoever advances will be rewarded, whoever retreats will be executed!" The demons, receiving the order, followed the old demon out through the gate and called out, "Which one of you is Sun Wukong?"

那伙小妖急入洞里报道：「大王，前面有一个毛脸勾嘴的和尚，称是齐天大圣孙悟空，来要他师父哩。」那魔王闻得此言，满心欢喜道：「正要他来哩。我自离了本宫，下降尘世，更不曾试试武艺。今日他来，必是个对手。」即命小妖们取出兵器。那洞中大小群妖，一个个精神抖擞，即忙抬出一根丈二长的点钢枪，递与老怪。老怪传令，教：「小的们，各要整齐。进前者赏，退后者诛！」众妖得令，随著老怪，走出门来，叫道：「那个是孙悟空？」

行者在傍閃過，見那魔王生得好不兇醜：Xingzhe stepped aside and looked, and saw that the demon king's appearance was fierce and hideous indeed:

孫大聖上前道：「你孫外公在這裡也。The Great Sage Sun stepped forward and said, "Your Grandfather Sun is right here.快早還我師父，兩無毀傷；Quickly return my master to me, and neither of us will come to harm;若道半個『不』字，我教你死無葬身之地！」那魔喝道：「我把你這個大膽潑猴精！but if you so much as breathe half a word of 'no,' I'll see to it you die without even a place to be buried!" The demon shouted, "You bold, insolent monkey spirit!你有些甚麼手段，敢出這般大言？」行者道：「你這潑物！What skills do you even have, that you dare speak such big words?" Xingzhe said, "You vile creature!是也不曾見我老孫的手段。」那妖魔道：「你師父偷盜我的衣服，實是我拿住了，如今待要蒸吃。It seems you have never witnessed old Sun's true skill." The demon said, "Your master stole my clothing — I truly did catch him, and now I intend to steam him and eat him.你是個甚麼好漢，就敢上我的門來取討？」行者道：「我師父乃忠良正直之僧，豈有偷你甚麼妖物之理？」妖魔道：「我在山路邊點化一座仙莊，你師父潛入裡面，心愛情慾，將我三領納錦綿裝背心兒偷穿在身，見有贓證，故此我才拿他。Just what sort of hero do you think you are, that you dare come to my very door to demand him back?" Xingzhe said, "My master is a loyal, upright, and virtuous monk — how could there be any reason for him to steal some demonic thing of yours?" The demon said, "I conjured up an immortal manor beside the mountain road; your master sneaked inside, and coveting it in his heart, secretly put on three of my brocade-lined padded vests. Since there is clear evidence of the theft, that is why I caught him.你今果有手段，即與我比勢：假若三合敵得我，饒了你師之命；If you truly have some skill now, then match strength with me: if within three rounds you can hold your own against me, I will spare your master's life;如敵不過我，教你一路歸陰。」but if you cannot withstand me, I'll send you straight down to the underworld."

孙大圣上前道：「你孙外公在这里也。快早还我师父，两无毁伤；若道半个『不』字，我教你死无葬身之地！」那魔喝道：「我把你这个大胆泼猴精！你有些甚么手段，敢出这般大言？」行者道：「你这泼物！是也不曾见我老孙的手段。」那妖魔道：「你师父偷盗我的衣服，实是我拿住了，如今待要蒸吃。你是个甚么好汉，就敢上我的门来取讨？」行者道：「我师父乃忠良正直之僧，岂有偷你甚么妖物之理？」妖魔道：「我在山路边点化一座仙庄，你师父潜入里面，心爱情欲，将我三领纳锦绵装背心儿偷穿在身，见有赃证，故此我才拿他。你今果有手段，即与我比势：假若三合敌得我，饶了你师之命；如敌不过我，教你一路归阴。」

行者笑道：「潑物！Xingzhe laughed and said, "Vile creature!不須講口，但說比勢，正合老孫之意。There's no need for talk — just speak of matching strength, and that suits old Sun's intentions exactly.走上來，吃吾之棒。」那怪物那怕甚麼賭鬥，挺鋼槍劈面迎來。Come forward and taste my staff!" The monster, fearless of any contest, thrust out his steel spear and came straight at his face to meet him.這一場好殺！What a fine fight this was!你看那：Just look at this:

行者笑道：「泼物！不须讲口，但说比势，正合老孙之意。走上来，吃吾之棒。」那怪物那怕甚么赌斗，挺钢枪劈面迎来。这一场好杀！你看那：

他兩個戰經三十合，不分勝負。The two of them fought through thirty rounds without either gaining the upper hand.那魔王見孫悟空棍法齊整，一往一來，全無些破綻，喜得他連聲喝采道：「好猴兒，好猴兒，真個是那鬧天宮的本事。」這大聖也愛他槍法不亂，右遮左擋，甚有解數，也叫道：「好妖精，好妖精。Seeing that Sun Wukong's staff technique was so disciplined, thrust and parry without a single flaw, the demon king was delighted and cried out in praise again and again, "Fine monkey, fine monkey! Truly the skill of the one who wreaked havoc in Heaven!" The Great Sage likewise admired how orderly the demon's spearwork was, warding off blows left and right with great skill, and he too called out, "Fine demon, fine demon!果然是一個偷丹的魔頭。」二人又鬥了一二十合，那魔王把槍尖點地，喝令小妖齊來。Truly a demon chief worthy of having stolen elixir!" The two fought another ten or twenty rounds more, then the demon king planted the tip of his spear on the ground and shouted an order for the little demons to close in together.那些潑怪一個個拿刀弄杖，執劍掄槍，把個孫大聖圍在中間。Those vile demons, each wielding a blade or a cudgel, gripping swords, swinging spears, surrounded the Great Sage Sun in their midst.行者公然不懼，只叫：「來得好，來得好，正合吾意。」使一條金箍棒，前迎後架，東擋西除。Xingzhe was not the least bit afraid, and only called out, "Well come, well come — this suits my intentions exactly." He wielded his gold-banded staff, meeting attacks in front and blocking behind, warding off blows east and west.那夥群妖莫想肯退。That band of demons had no intention whatsoever of retreating.行者忍不住焦躁，把金箍棒丟將起去，喝聲：「變！」即變作千百條鐵棒，好便似飛蛇走蟒，盈空裡亂落下來。Unable to bear it any longer, Xingzhe grew impatient, tossed his gold-banded staff into the air, and shouted, "Change!" It at once transformed into a thousand, a hundred iron staves, just like flying snakes and racing pythons, falling in a wild scatter from the sky.那夥妖精見了，一個個魄散魂飛，抱頸縮頭，盡往洞中逃命。When that band of demons saw this, each and every one of them was scared out of their wits; clutching their necks and hunching their heads, they all fled into the cave to save their lives.老魔王唏唏冷笑道：「那猴不要無禮，看手段。」即忙袖中取出一個亮灼灼白森森的圈子來，望空拋起，叫聲：「著！」唿喇一下，把金箍棒收做一條，套將去了。The old demon king gave a cold chuckle and said, "Don't be so insolent, monkey — watch this trick." He hastily drew from his sleeve a gleaming, stark-white ring, tossed it up into the air, and shouted, "Take that!" With a whoosh, it gathered the gold-banded staff back into a single rod and caught it up in a loop, carrying it off.弄得孫大聖赤手空拳，翻觔斗逃了性命。This left the Great Sage Sun empty-handed, and he turned a somersault to flee and save his life.那妖魔得勝回歸洞，行者朦朧失主張。The demon, victorious, returned to his cave, while Xingzhe, dazed and bewildered, had lost all sense of what to do.這正是：This is just as it is said:
