In the second half of an autumn night, the moon had gone down but the sun had not yet risen, leaving only a stretch of inky-blue sky;除了夜遊的東西,什麽都睡着。everything but the creatures that roam by night was asleep. Hua Laoshuan suddenly sat up. He struck a match and lit the grease-caked lamp, and a pale bluish-white light filled the two rooms of the teahouse.
Xiaoshuan's father, are you going now?" came the voice of an old woman. From the little inner room came a fit of coughing.
Mm." Laoshuan listened, answered, and buttoned his clothes all at once;伸手過去說,『你給我罷。』he reached out his hand and said, "Give it to me."
Hua Dama groped under the pillow for a long while, pulled out a packet of silver dollars, and handed it to Laoshuan; he took it, tucked it with trembling hands into his pocket, and pressed it twice more from the outside;便點上燈籠,吹熄燈盞,走向裏屋子去了。then he lit the lantern, blew out the lamp, and went into the inner room. Inside that room there was a rustling sound, followed by another fit of coughing.老栓候他平靜下去,纔低低的叫道:『小栓……Laoshuan waited until it had subsided, then called out softly, "Xiaoshuan——你不要起來。……Don't get up.——店麽?The shop? Your mother will see to it."
Hearing that his son said no more, Laoshuan guessed he had settled down to sleep again;便出了門,走到街上。so he went out the door and walked into the street. The street was dark and empty, nothing to be seen but a grayish-white road, plain and clear. The lantern light shone on his two feet, moving one after the other. Now and then he passed a few dogs, but not one of them barked. The air outside was much colder than in the house;老栓倒覺爽快,彷彿一旦變了少年,得了神通,有給人生命的本領似的,跨步格外高遠。yet Laoshuan felt refreshed by it, as though he had turned into a young man overnight and gained magical powers, the ability to bestow life on others, and his strides grew unusually long and vigorous. And the further he walked, the plainer the road became, and the brighter the sky grew.
Laoshuan was walking along absorbed in his thoughts when he suddenly gave a start—far off he saw a T-shaped street lying plainly crosswise before him. He backed off a few steps, found a shop with its door shut, slipped in under the eaves, and stood still against the door. After quite a while, he began to feel a chill come over him.
Humph, old fellow."
……』"He seems pleased, though.……"
Laoshuan gave another start, and opening his eyes to look, saw several people pass in front of him. One of them even turned to look back at him; his face was not very distinct, but he looked just like a starving man at the sight of food, a grasping gleam flashing in his eyes. Laoshuan glanced at his lantern—it had already gone out. He pressed his pocket; the hard shape of the packet was still there. He raised his head and looked both ways, and saw many strange people, in twos and threes, wandering about like ghosts;定睛再看,卻也看不出什麽別的奇怪。but when he fixed his eyes and looked again, he could make out nothing else unusual.
Before long, he saw several soldiers moving about over there;衣服前後的一個大白圓圈,遠地裏也看得淸楚,走過面前的,並且看出號衣上暗紅色的鑲邊。 the big white circles on the front and back of their uniforms were clear even at a distance, and on those who passed close by he could even make out the dark red trim on their uniforms.—There came a burst of footsteps, and in the blink of an eye a whole crowd had surged past. The people who had been scattered in twos and threes suddenly merged into one mass and surged forward like a tide;將到丁字街口,便突然立住,簇成一個半圓。and on nearing the mouth of the T-shaped street they suddenly stopped and clustered into a semicircle.
Laoshuan too looked that way, but could see only a mass of backs;頸項都伸得很長,彷彿許多鴨,被無形的手揑住了的,向上提着。their necks were all stretched out long, as if they were so many ducks held by invisible hands and lifted upward. There was a moment of stillness, then what seemed to be some sound, and the crowd stirred again; with a rumble, everyone surged backward;一直散到老栓立着的地方,幾乎將他擠倒了。the crowd scattered all the way back to where Laoshuan was standing, nearly knocking him down.
Money in one hand, goods in the other!" A man dressed all in black stood before Laoshuan, his eyes like a pair of knives,刺得老栓縮小了一半。stabbing so that Laoshuan seemed to shrink to half his size. The man held out one big hand toward him, palm open;一隻手卻撮着一個鮮紅的饅頭,那紅的還是一點一點的往下滴。in the other he pinched a bright red steamed bun, the red still dripping down drop by drop.
Laoshuan hastily fumbled out the silver dollars and, trembling, tried to hand them over, yet did not dare take the thing from him. The man grew impatient and shouted, "What are you afraid of? Why don't you take it!" Laoshuan still hesitated;黑的人便搶過燈籠,一把扯下紙罩,裹了饅頭,塞與老栓;the man in black snatched the lantern from him, tore off its paper shade with one pull, wrapped the bun in it, and thrust it into Laoshuan's hands;一手抓過洋錢,揑一揑,轉身去了。then with the other hand he grabbed the silver dollars, gave them a squeeze, and turned away. muttering under his breath, "This old fool……"
Who's this medicine for?" Laoshuan seemed to hear someone ask him, but he did not answer;他的精神,現在只在一個包上,彷彿抱着一個十世單傳的嬰兒,別的事情,都已置之度外了。his whole mind was now fixed on the little bundle, as though he were cradling the only heir of ten generations; everything else had been put out of his thoughts. He was going to transplant the new life wrapped inside it into his own household, and reap a great harvest of happiness. The sun, too, had come out;在他面前,顯出一條大道,直到他家中,後面也照見丁字有頭破匾上『古口亭口』這四個黯淡的金字。before him a broad road opened out, running straight to his home, and behind him the light also fell on the four faded gilt characters—"Ancient... Pavilion..."—on the cracked old signboard at the head of the T-shaped street.

By the time Laoshuan reached home, the shop front had long since been tidied up, and row upon row of tea tables gleamed smooth and glossy. But there were no customers;只有小栓坐在裏排的桌前喫飯,大粒的汗,從額上滾下,夾襖也貼住了脊心,兩塊肩胛骨高高凸出,印成一個陽文的『八』字。only Xiaoshuan sat eating at a table in the back row, big drops of sweat rolling down his forehead, his lined jacket sticking to his back, his two shoulder blades jutting up high, stamped out like the raised strokes of the character "eight." At this sight Laoshuan could not help knitting his brow, which had just now been smooth. His wife hurried out from beside the stove, her eyes wide, her lips trembling a little.
Did you get it?"
I got it."
The two of them went together into the kitchen and talked it over for a while;華大媽便出去了,不多時,拏着一片老荷葉回來,攤在桌上。then Hua Dama went out, and before long came back holding an old lotus leaf, which she spread out on the table. Laoshuan too opened the lantern's shade and used the lotus leaf to wrap the red bun afresh.小栓也喫完飯,他的母親慌忙說:——Xiaoshuan had just finished his meal when his mother said hastily:—
Xiaoshuan—stay where you are, don't come over here."
While tending the stove fire, Laoshuan stuffed the green-wrapped bundle and the tattered red-and-white lantern into the stove together; when a burst of red and black flame had passed, the shop was filled with a strange fragrance.
『好香!"What a smell! What kind of snack are you having?" It was the hunchbacked Fifth Master arriving. This man spent every day in the teahouse, coming earliest and leaving latest; just now he had shuffled to the table in the street-side corner, sat down, and asked his question, but no one answered him. "Rice porridge?" Still no one answered. Laoshuan hurried out and brewed him a pot of tea.
Xiaoshuan, come inside!" Hua Dama called Xiaoshuan into the inner room, set a stool in the middle, and Xiaoshuan sat down.他的母親端過一碟烏黑的圓東西,輕輕說:——His mother brought over a plate holding a round, blackened thing, and said gently:—
Eat it up—and you'll be cured."
Xiaoshuan picked up the black thing and looked at it for a while; it felt as though he were holding his own life in his hands, and a strange, indescribable feeling filled him. He broke it open with the greatest care, and from inside the scorched crust a wisp of white steam shot out; when the steam had scattered, there were two halves of a white flour bun.—In no time it was all inside him, and yet he had entirely forgotten what it tasted like;面前只剩下一張空盤。only an empty plate was left before him. Beside him stood his father on one side and his mother on the other, and the look in both their eyes seemed as though they wanted to pour something into him and draw something out of him at the same time;便禁不住心跳起來,按着胸膛,又是一陣咳嗽。he could not help his heart beginning to pound, and pressing his chest, he broke into another fit of coughing.

Sleep a while—and you'll be well."
Xiaoshuan did as his mother said, and coughing, fell asleep. Hua Dama waited until his breathing had grown calm, then gently covered him with the lined quilt, patched all over.
Many people sat in the shop, and Laoshuan was busy too, carrying the big copper kettle, going back and forth pouring tea for the customers;兩個眼眶,都圍着一圈黑線。dark rings circled both his eyes.
Laoshuan, are you feeling unwell?—Are you sick?" said a man with a graying beard.
No."
No?—Well, I thought—but smiling the way you are, I suppose it doesn't look like it……" The graying-bearded man took back his own words.
Laoshuan's just been busy. If it were his son……" Before the hunchbacked Fifth Master could finish, a man with a face of coarse, jutting flesh suddenly burst in, wearing a black cloth gown with its buttons undone, a wide black sash bound carelessly around his waist.剛進門,便對老栓嚷道:——The moment he came through the door, he shouted at Laoshuan:—
『喫了麽?"Has he eaten it? Is he better? Laoshuan, you're in luck! ……』You're in luck—if it weren't for my sharp ears for news……"
Laoshuan held the teapot in one hand, the other hanging respectfully at his side;笑嘻嘻的聽。he listened with a smile. The whole roomful of people listened respectfully too. Hua Dama, her eyes also ringed with black, smilingly brought out a teacup with tea leaves in it, added an olive, and Laoshuan went to pour in the water.
『這是包好!"This is guaranteed to work! This is no ordinary thing. Just think—brought while hot, eaten while hot." The coarse-faced man just kept shouting.
It's true—if Uncle Kang hadn't looked out for us, how could this have happened……" Hua Dama thanked him gratefully too.
『包好,包好!"Guaranteed, guaranteed! Eaten this way while hot.這樣的人血饅頭,什麽癆病都包好!』A human-blood bun like this cures any case of consumption, guaranteed!"
At the words "consumption," Hua Dama's face changed slightly, as if she were somewhat displeased;但又立刻堆上笑,搭赸着走開了。but she at once put on a smile again, and, covering her awkwardness, moved away. But this Uncle Kang did not notice, and went on shouting at the top of his voice, shouting so loudly that even Xiaoshuan, asleep inside, joined in with a fit of coughing.
So it turns out your Xiaoshuan has met with such good fortune. This illness is sure to be cured completely;怪不得老栓整天的笑着呢。』 As the graying-bearded man spoke, he walked up to Uncle Kang and asked in a low, deferential voice, "Uncle Kang—I hear the criminal who was executed today was a child of the Xia family. Whose child was that, exactly?究竟是什麽事?』What was it all about, really?"
Isn't that precisely the son of Fourth Mistress Xia? That little fellow!" Seeing that everyone had pricked up their ears to listen to him, Uncle Kang grew all the more pleased; the lumps of coarse flesh on his face swelled taut, and he said, louder still, "That little wretch didn't care about his own life — well, if he didn't want it, so be it. As for me, this time round I got not the slightest advantage from it;連剝下來的衣服,都給管牢的紅眼睛阿義拏去了。——第一要算我們栓叔運氣;even the clothes stripped off him were carried away by Red-eye Ah Yi, the jailer. — First of all, it was our Uncle Shuan who was in luck;第二是夏三爺賞了二十五兩雪白的銀子,獨自落腰包,一文不花。』second, Third Master Xia was rewarded twenty-five taels of gleaming white silver, which he pocketed all by himself, without spending a single coin."
Xiao Shuan came slowly out of the little back room, both hands pressed to his chest, coughing without let-up;走到竈下,盛出一碗冷飯,泡上熱水,坐下便喫。he went to the stove, ladled out a bowl of cold rice, poured hot water over it, sat down, and began to eat.華大媽跟着他走,輕輕的問道,『小栓你好些麽?——你仍舊只是肚餓?……』Mother Hua followed after him and asked softly, "Xiao Shuan, are you feeling any better? — Is it still only that your stomach is empty?..."
Guaranteed to cure, guaranteed to cure!" Uncle Kang glanced at Xiao Shuan, then turned his face back again and said to the crowd, "Third Master Xia really is a sly one — if he hadn't gone and informed the authorities first, his whole family would have been executed down to the last member. And now what? Silver! — And that little wretch really was good for nothing! Locked up in prison, and still he tried to talk the jailer into rebelling."
Ah, that's outrageous!" said a man of some twenty-odd years sitting in the back row, his face showing great indignation.
You should know that Red-eye Ah Yi went in to sound out the particulars, but instead ended up chatting with him. He said: this great Qing empire belongs to all of us. Just think — is that the talk of a sane man? Red-eye already knew that at home he had only an old mother, but he hadn't expected the man to be so poor that not a drop of profit could be squeezed from him, and he was already fit to burst with rage.他還要老虎頭上搔癢,便給他兩個嘴巴!』And on top of it he had to go scratching the tiger's head besides, so he gave him a couple of slaps across the face!"
Brother Yi has a fine pair of fists — those two blows must have been quite enough for him to remember." The hunchback in the corner suddenly brightened up.
That worthless creature wasn't even afraid of being beaten, and on top of it had the nerve to say 'pity, pity.'"

That year, the Qingming festival was unusually cold;楊柳纔吐出半粒米大的新芽。the willows had only just put out new buds the size of half a grain of rice. Not long after daybreak, Mother Hua was already before a new grave on the right side, laying out four dishes of food and a bowl of rice, and she wept for a good while. After burning the paper money, she sat blankly on the ground;彷彿等候什麽似的,但自己也說不出等候什麽。as if she were waiting for something, though she herself could not have said what it was she waited for. A light breeze rose and stirred her cropped hair, which was indeed much whiter than it had been the year before.

Along the little path came another woman, her hair likewise half white, her skirt and jacket ragged;提一個破舊的朱漆圓籃,外挂一串紙錠,三步一歇的走。she carried a battered round basket lacquered red, hung about with a string of paper money, and walked with a pause every three steps. Suddenly seeing Mother Hua sitting on the ground watching her, she grew somewhat hesitant, and over her pale, wan face there passed a look of shame;但終于硬着頭皮,走到左邊的一坐墳前,放下了籃子。but in the end she screwed up her courage and walked to a grave on the left side, where she set down her basket.

That grave and Xiao Shuan's grave stood in a row, with only the narrow path between them. Mother Hua watched her lay out her four dishes of food and bowl of rice, stand and weep for a while, and burn her paper money;心裏暗暗地想,『這墳裏的也是兒子了。』 and thought to herself secretly, "So the one in that grave too was a son." The old woman wandered about looking here and there for a while; then all at once her hands and feet began to tremble, and staggering, she fell back several steps, staring wide-eyed, simply dazed.

Seeing her like this, Mother Hua feared she might be so stricken with grief as to go half mad;便忍不住立起身,跨過小路,低聲對他說,『你這位老奶奶不要傷心了,——我們還是回去罷。』and so, unable to help herself, she rose, stepped across the path, and said to her in a low voice, "Old Mistress, don't grieve so — let's just go home now."
The woman nodded once, her eyes still staring upward;也低聲吃吃的說道,『你看。——看這是什麽呢?』and in a low, faltering voice she said, "Look there. — Look, what is that?"
Mother Hua followed the line of her finger, and her gaze came to rest on the grave in front of them; on this grave the grass roots had not yet fully closed over, and patches of bare yellow earth showed through, quite an unsightly sight. But looking more closely further up, she too could not help giving a start; — there, plainly, was a ring of red and white flowers encircling the pointed, rounded crown of the grave.

Both their eyes had long since grown dim with age, and yet, gazing at these red and white flowers, they could still see them quite clearly. There were not very many flowers, arranged in a neat round circle; they did not look very lively, but they were tidy all the same. Mother Hua hastily looked to her own son's grave and to the others nearby, but there only a few small blue-white flowers, hardy enough to brave the cold, bloomed here and there, scattered and sparse;便覺得心裏忽然感到一種不足和空虛,不願意根究。and she suddenly felt in her heart a kind of dissatisfaction and emptiness, though she had no wish to probe into it. The old woman took a few steps closer still, examined the flowers carefully once over, and said to herself, "These have no roots — they don't look as if they grew here on their own! Who would ever come to a place like this? 他想了又想,忽又流下淚來,大聲說道:——Children wouldn't come here to play; — and kinsfolk stopped coming long ago. — Whatever can this mean?" She thought it over again and again, and suddenly tears fell once more, and she said loudly: —

The light breeze had long since died away;枯草支支直立,有如銅絲。the withered grass stood stiff and upright, blade by blade, like strands of copper wire. A thread of trembling sound quivered in the air, growing ever thinner, until it thinned away into nothing, and all around lay still as death. The two of them stood amid the clumps of withered grass, faces upturned, watching the crow;那烏鴉也在筆直的樹枝間,縮着頭,鐵鑄一般站着。and the crow, too, perched among the straight bare branches, sat with its head drawn in, motionless as though cast of iron.

more and more people came to visit the graves, a few old and young appearing and vanishing among the earthen mounds.
Mother Hua, for some reason, felt as though a heavy burden had been lifted from her, and thought of leaving;一面勸着說,『我們還是回去罷。』and she urged the other woman, saying, "Let's just go home now."

They had not gone more than twenty or thirty paces when suddenly, from behind them, they heard a loud cry of "Ah—!" Both of them turned their heads with a start, and saw the crow spread its two wings, gather itself, and shoot straight off into the distant sky, flying away like an arrow.

What it’s about
Before dawn 華老栓 walks out to an execution ground with the family savings in a packet and buys from the executioner a steamed bun soaked in fresh human blood — the folk cure he and his wife are certain will save their consumptive son 小栓. The blood belongs to the young revolutionary 夏瑜, informed on by his own uncle for the reward and beheaded that morning. In the teahouse afterwards the regulars agree, over their tea, that a man who claimed the empire belonged to everybody must have been out of his mind.
The last section jumps forward to the Qingming grave-sweeping festival. Two mothers meet on the burial ground, one on each side of the path that separates executed criminals from the ordinary poor: 小栓 died anyway, and 夏四奶奶 has come to see the son whose blood he swallowed. On Xia Yu's grave someone has laid a wreath of red and white flowers that nobody in the story can account for. The two family names, 華 and 夏, together spell the oldest literary name for China.
When it was written 背景
Published in 新青年 volume 6, number 5, in May 1919, the month of the May Fourth demonstrations, and long read as an elegy for the executed revolutionary 秋瑾, a fellow native of Lu Xun's Shaoxing. Lu Xun said afterwards that he put the wreath on the grave deliberately, so as not to leave the reader with no hope at all. It is a step up from 孔乙己 for a learner — four numbered sections, a teahouse full of nicknamed regulars, and a plot that only closes when you notice whose two graves you are standing between — but it is short, and the dawn walk that opens it is the most concrete writing in the book.
