What it’s about
Mr. Niu constantly repeats a foreign-sounding mantra of love. Watching through a window, he sees his friend Tianhe play with her little brother by biting his arm, pinching his cheeks, shaking him and slapping his leg until he cries. She then embraces him, calls him good and says she loves him; as soon as he smiles, she begins tormenting him again. The rain hides the scene, but its rhythm lodges in Niu's mind as a model of affection that manufactures the suffering it then comforts.
He tries to turn the observation into a poem, fails, and instead appends a page to his already full diary. His generalizations grow severe: lovers enjoy the pain of the beloved, men are toys in women's hands and women's love is easily withdrawn. He rereads the passage and crosses out the most excessive claims. When the crying child is brought to him, Niu responds gently and the boy becomes calm. The miniature makes fun of a thinker converting one domestic incident into a theory of women, while showing that his melodramatic idea contains a smaller truth about intimacy, play and power.
When it was written 背景
The repeated phrase “拉夫斯偏” appears to be Xu's comic phonetic rendering of an imported slogan about love rather than a standard Chinese expression. Foreign vocabulary, diary writing and self-conscious theorizing mark Mr. Niu as a modern intellectual, but his seven-character verse fails and his universal claims collapse under rereading. The story participates in May Fourth debates over romantic freedom and companionate love while satirizing the tendency to explain “woman” from male disappointment. Its gender assumptions are distinctly of the period and should not be mistaken for an endorsed diagnosis. For learners, follow the repeated actions 咬, 擘, 搖, 掌 and the sequence 寫, 塗去: bodily play is first observed, then inflated in prose, then partly corrected.
