第四十一回　賈寶玉品茶攏翠庵　劉姥姥醉臥怡紅院 Jia Baoyu Sips Tea at Green Lattice Nunnery; Granny Liu Lies Drunk in Happy Red Court

話說劉姥姥兩只手比著說道：“花兒落了結個大倭瓜。”眾人聽了哄堂大笑起來。The story goes on: Liu Laolao gestured with both hands and said, "When the flower falls off, it turns into a big pumpkin." Hearing this, everyone burst into laughter.于是吃過門杯，因又逗趣笑道：“實告訴說罷，我的手腳子粗笨，又喝了酒，仔細失手打了這瓷杯。Having drunk the forfeit cup, she went on teasing with a laugh: "To tell you the truth, my hands and feet are clumsy, and now that I've had wine, I'm afraid I might slip and break this porcelain cup.有木頭的杯取個子來，我便失了手，掉了地下也無礙。”眾人聽了，又笑起來。If you brought me a wooden one instead, then even if I dropped it on the floor, it wouldn't matter." Hearing this, everyone laughed again.鳳姐兒聽如此說，便忙笑道：“果真要木頭的，我就取了來。Xifeng, hearing this, quickly said with a laugh, "If you really want a wooden one, I'll go get it right away.可有一句先說下：這木頭的可比不得瓷的，他都是一套，定要吃遍一套方使得。”劉姥姥聽了心下道：“我方才不過是趣話取笑兒，誰知他果真竟有。But let me say one thing first: these wooden ones are not like the porcelain ones — they come as a set, and once you start you must drink through the whole set before you're done." Liu Laolao, hearing this, thought to herself, "I only meant it as a joke in fun — who would have thought she really has such things.我時常在村庄鄉紳大家也赴過席，金杯銀杯倒都也見過，從來沒見有木頭杯之說。I've often attended banquets at gentry households in the villages, and I've seen gold cups and silver cups, but I've never once heard of such a thing as a wooden cup.哦，是了，想必是小孩子們使的木碗兒，不過誆我多喝兩碗。Oh, I see — it must be one of those little wooden bowls children use; she's only trying to trick me into drinking a couple more bowls.別管他，橫豎這酒蜜水兒似的，多喝點子也無妨。”想畢，便說：“取來再商量。”鳳姐乃命丰兒：“到前面里間屋，書架子上有十個竹根套杯取來。”丰兒聽了，答應才要去，鴛鴦笑道：“我知道你這十個杯還小。Never mind, this wine tastes as mild as honeyed water anyway; a little more won't hurt." Having thought it through, she said, "Bring it out and we'll see." Xifeng then told Fenger, "Go to the inner room out front — on the bookshelf there are ten cups made of bamboo root, nested one inside another; bring them here." Fenger, hearing this, answered and was about to go when Yuanyang said with a laugh, "I know that set of ten cups of yours is still too small.況且你才說是木頭的，這會子又拿了竹根子的來，倒不好看。Besides, you just said wooden ones, and now you're bringing bamboo-root ones instead — that wouldn't look right.不如把我們那里的黃楊根整摳的十個大套杯拿來，灌他十下子。”鳳姐兒笑道：“更好了。”鴛鴦果命人取來。Better to bring the set of ten large cups from our place, carved whole out of boxwood root, and pour her ten rounds with those." Xifeng said with a laugh, "Even better." Yuanyang then had someone go fetch them.劉姥姥一看，又驚又喜：驚的是一連十個，挨次大小分下來，那大的足似個小盆子，第十個极小的還有手里的杯子兩個大，喜的是雕鏤奇絕，一色山水樹木人物，并有草字以及圖印。When Liu Laolao saw them, she was both alarmed and delighted: alarmed because there were ten of them in a row, graded from large to small, the biggest as large as a small basin, and even the smallest of the ten still twice the size of an ordinary cup; delighted because the carving was so marvelously fine, all showing mountains, waters, trees and figures, along with cursive-script inscriptions and seal designs.因忙說道：“拿了那小的來就是了，怎麼這樣多？”鳳姐兒笑道：“這個杯沒有喝一個的理。So she said hastily, "Just bring me the smallest one — why so many?" Xifeng said with a laugh, "With this set, there's no such rule as drinking from just one.我們家因沒有這大量的，所以沒人敢使他。In our household nobody has that much capacity for drink, so no one dares use these.姥姥既要，好容易尋了出來，必定要挨次吃一遍才使得。”劉姥姥唬的忙道：“這個不敢。Since you asked for them, Granny, and it took some trouble to find them, you really must drink through the whole set in order." Liu Laolao, frightened, said hastily, "I wouldn't dare do that.好姑奶奶，饒了我罷。”賈母，薛姨媽，王夫人知道他上了年紀的人，禁不起，忙笑道：“說是說，笑是笑，不可多吃了，只吃這頭一杯罷。”劉姥姥道：“阿彌陀佛！Dear young mistress, spare me, please." Jia Mu, Xue Yima, and Wang Furen, knowing she was elderly and couldn't take much, said quickly with a smile, "Talk is talk and joking is joking — you mustn't drink too much; just have this first cup." Liu Laolao said, "Amitabha Buddha!我還是小杯吃罷。I'd rather drink from a small cup after all.把這大杯收著，我帶了家去慢慢的吃罷。”說的眾人又笑起來。Put this big cup away — let me take it home and drink from it slowly." This set everyone laughing again.鴛鴦無法，只得命人滿斟了一大杯，劉姥姥兩手捧著喝。Yuanyang had no choice but to have someone fill one of the big cups to the brim, and Liu Laolao held it with both hands and drank.賈母薛姨媽都道：“慢些，不要嗆了。”薛姨媽又命鳳姐兒布了菜。Both Jia Mu and Xue Yima said, "Slowly now, don't choke." Xue Yima also told Xifeng to serve her some food.鳳姐笑道：“姥姥要吃什麼，說出名兒來，我搛了喂你。”劉姥姥道：“我知什麼名兒，樣樣都是好的。”賈母笑道：“你把茄鮺搛些喂他。”鳳姐兒聽說，依言搛些茄鮺送入劉姥姥口中，因笑道：“你們天天吃茄子，也嘗嘗我們的茄子弄的可口不可口。”劉姥姥笑道：“別哄我了，茄子跑出這個味兒來了，我們也不用种糧食，只种茄子了。”眾人笑道：“真是茄子，我們再不哄你。”劉姥姥詫异道：“真是茄子？Xifeng said with a laugh, "Granny, whatever you'd like to eat, just name it, and I'll pick it up with my chopsticks and feed you." Liu Laolao said, "What would I know of names — everything here is good." Jia Mu said with a laugh, "Pick up some of the eggplant relish and feed it to her." Xifeng, hearing this, picked up some eggplant relish as told and put it into Liu Laolao's mouth, saying with a laugh, "You eat eggplant every day too — try tasting whether ours is made tasty or not." Liu Laolao said with a laugh, "Don't fool me — if eggplant could come out tasting like this, we wouldn't need to grow grain anymore, we'd just grow eggplant." Everyone said with a laugh, "It really is eggplant, we're not fooling you this time." Liu Laolao said in astonishment, "It's really eggplant?我白吃了半日。I've been eating it all this while for nothing, without even knowing it.姑奶奶再喂我些，這一口細嚼嚼。”鳳姐兒果又搛了些放入口內。Young mistress, feed me a bit more — let me chew this mouthful carefully." Xifeng did indeed pick up some more and put it into her mouth.劉姥姥細嚼了半日，笑道：“雖有一點茄子香，只是還不象是茄子。Liu Laolao chewed it carefully for a good while, then said with a laugh, "There's a bit of eggplant flavor to it, but it still doesn't seem quite like eggplant.告訴我是個什麼法子弄的，我也弄著吃去。”鳳姐兒笑道：“這也不難。Tell me how it's made, and I'll try making it myself to eat." Xifeng said with a laugh, "That's not hard at all.你把才下來的茄子把皮籤了，只要淨肉，切成碎釘子，用雞油炸了，再用雞脯子肉并香菌，新筍，蘑菇，五香腐乾，各色乾果子，俱切成釘子，用雞湯煨乾，將香油一收，外加糟油一拌，盛在瓷罐子里封嚴，要吃時拿出來，用炒的雞瓜一拌就是。”劉姥姥聽了，搖頭吐舌說道：“我的佛祖！Take eggplants just picked, peel off the skin, use only the flesh, cut it into fine dice, and fry it in chicken fat; then take chicken breast meat together with mushrooms, fresh bamboo shoots, more mushrooms, spiced dried tofu, and dried fruits of various kinds, all cut into fine dice as well, and stew it down in chicken broth; work in some sesame oil, mix in a bit of distiller's-grain oil, put it in a porcelain jar and seal it tight. When you want to eat it, take some out and mix it with fried shredded chicken, and that's it." Liu Laolao heard this, shook her head and stuck out her tongue, saying, "My Buddha!倒得十來隻雞來配他，怪道這個味兒！”一面說笑，一面慢慢的吃完了酒，還只管細玩那杯。It takes ten or so chickens just to go with it — no wonder it tastes like this!" Talking and laughing all the while, she slowly finished her wine, and still kept turning the cup over to examine it closely.鳳姐笑道：“還是不足興，再吃一杯罷。”劉姥姥忙道：“了不得，那就醉死了。Xifeng said with a laugh, "That's still not enough to make merry — have another cup." Liu Laolao said hastily, "Oh no, that would be the death of me from drink.我因為愛這樣范，虧他怎麼作了。”鴛鴦笑道：“酒吃完了，到底這杯子是什麼木的？”劉姥姥笑道：“怨不得姑娘不認得，你們在這金門繡戶的，如何認得木頭！I only love the look of it, and marvel at how they ever managed to make it." Yuanyang said with a laugh, "Now that the wine's finished, what kind of wood do you suppose this cup is made of, after all?" Liu Laolao said with a laugh, "No wonder you young ladies don't recognize it — living behind these golden gates and embroidered doors, how would you know wood!我們成日家和樹林子作街坊，困了枕著他睡，乏了靠著他坐，荒年間餓了還吃他，眼睛里天天見他，耳朵里天天聽他，口兒里天天講他，所以好歹真假，我是認得的。We country folk live day in and day out as neighbors to the woods — when we're drowsy we pillow our heads on wood to sleep, when we're tired we lean against it to sit, and in lean years when we're hungry we even eat parts of trees. My eyes see wood every day, my ears hear about it every day, my mouth talks about it every day — so whether it's good or bad, real or fake, I can tell.讓我認一認。”一面說，一面細細端詳了半日，道：“你們這樣人家斷沒有那賤東西，那容易得的木頭，你們也不收著了。Let me have a good look at it." So saying, she examined it closely for a good while, then said, "A household like yours would certainly never keep anything so cheap around — even wood that's easy to come by, you wouldn't bother to save.我掂著這杯体重，斷乎不是楊木，這一定是黃松的。”眾人聽了，哄堂大笑起來。Weighing this cup in my hand, it's certainly not poplar wood — this must be yellow pine." Hearing this, everyone burst out laughing all together.

只見一個婆子走來請問賈母，說：“姑娘們都到了藕香榭，請示下，就演罷還是再等一會子？”賈母忙笑道：“可是倒忘了他們，就叫他們演罷。”那個婆子答應去了。Just then an old woman came up to ask Jia Mu, saying, "The young ladies have all arrived at Ouxiang Xie, and would like your instructions — shall they perform now, or wait a while longer?" Jia Mu said quickly with a laugh, "Why, I'd quite forgotten about them — tell them to go ahead and perform." The old woman assented and went off.不一時，只聽得簫管悠揚，笙笛并發。Before long, the sound of flutes and pipes rose in melodious strains, sheng and dizi playing together.正值風清氣爽之時，那樂聲穿林度水而來，自然使人神怡心曠。It happened to be a time of clear breeze and crisp air, and the music came drifting through the woods and over the water, naturally putting everyone in a mood of ease and delight.寶玉先禁不住，拿起壺來斟了一杯，一口飲盡。Baoyu could not help himself first of all — he picked up the wine pot, poured himself a cup, and drained it in one gulp.复又斟上，才要飲，只見王夫人也要飲，命人換暖酒，寶玉連忙將自己的杯捧了過來，送到王夫人口邊，王夫人便就他手內吃了兩口。He poured another and was just about to drink again when he saw that Wang Furen also wanted to drink, and had ordered someone to bring warmed wine; Baoyu hurriedly carried over his own cup and held it to Wang Furen's lips, and she drank two sips straight from his hand.一時暖酒來了，寶玉仍歸舊坐，王夫人提了暖壺下席來，眾人皆都出了席，薛姨媽也立起來，賈母忙命李，鳳二人接過壺來：“讓你姨媽坐了，大家才便。”王夫人見如此說，方將壺遞與鳳姐，自己歸坐。Presently the warmed wine arrived, and Baoyu went back to his own seat. Wang Furen took up the pot of warm wine and came down from her place at the table; everyone else rose from their seats too, and Xue Yima also stood up. Jia Mu quickly told Li Wan and Xifeng to take the pot from her, saying, "Let your aunt sit down, so everyone else can be at ease too." Hearing this, Wang Furen handed the pot to Xifeng and returned to her seat.賈母笑道：“大家吃上兩杯，今日著實有趣。”說著擎杯讓薛姨媽，又向湘雲寶釵道：“你姐妹兩個也吃一杯。Jia Mu said with a laugh, "Everyone have a couple of cups — today has really been delightful." So saying, she raised her cup to offer it to Xue Yima, and then said to Xiangyun and Baochai, "You two sisters have a cup as well.你妹妹雖不大會吃，也別饒他。”說著自己已乾了。Your younger sister may not be much of a drinker, but don't let her off easy either." As she spoke she had already emptied her own cup.湘雲、寶釵、黛玉也都乾了。Xiangyun, Baochai, and Daiyu all drained their cups too.當下劉姥姥聽見這般音樂，且又有了酒，越發喜的手舞足蹈起來。At that moment Liu Laolao, hearing such music, and with the wine in her besides, grew all the more delighted and began waving her hands and stamping her feet.寶玉因下席過來向黛玉笑道：“你瞧劉姥姥的樣子。”黛玉笑道：“當日圣樂一奏，百獸率舞，如今才一牛耳。”眾姐妹都笑了。Baoyu got up from his seat and came over to say to Daiyu with a laugh, "Just look at Liu Laolao." Daiyu said with a laugh, "In ancient times, once the sacred music struck up, all the beasts came to dance along — now we've only got one ox's ear of it." All the sisters laughed.

只见一个婆子走来请问贾母，说：“姑娘们都到了藕香榭，请示下，就演罢还是再等一会子？”贾母忙笑道：“可是倒忘了他们，就叫他们演罢。”那个婆子答应去了。不一时，只听得箫管悠扬，笙笛并发。正值风清气爽之时，那乐声穿林度水而来，自然使人神怡心旷。宝玉先禁不住，拿起壶来斟了一杯，一口饮尽。复又斟上，才要饮，只见王夫人也要饮，命人换暖酒，宝玉连忙将自己的杯捧了过来，送到王夫人口边，王夫人便就他手内吃了两口。一时暖酒来了，宝玉仍归旧坐，王夫人提了暖壶下席来，众人皆都出了席，薛姨妈也立起来，贾母忙命李，凤二人接过壶来：“让你姨妈坐了，大家才便。”王夫人见如此说，方将壶递与凤姐，自己归坐。贾母笑道：“大家吃上两杯，今日著实有趣。”说著擎杯让薛姨妈，又向湘云宝钗道：“你姐妹两个也吃一杯。你妹妹虽不大会吃，也别饶他。”说著自己已干了。湘云、宝钗、黛玉也都干了。当下刘姥姥听见这般音乐，且又有了酒，越发喜的手舞足蹈起来。宝玉因下席过来向黛玉笑道：“你瞧刘姥姥的样子。”黛玉笑道：“当日圣乐一奏，百兽率舞，如今才一牛耳。”众姐妹都笑了。

須臾樂止，薛姨媽出席笑道：“大家的酒想也都有了，且出去散散再坐罷。”賈母也正要散散，于是大家出席，都隨著賈母游玩。In a moment the music stopped, and Xue Yima rose from her seat and said with a laugh, "I imagine everyone's had enough wine by now — let's go out and stroll around a bit before sitting down again." Jia Mu, too, was just then wanting to move about, so everyone rose from the table and followed Jia Mu about on a stroll.賈母因要帶著劉姥姥散悶，遂攜了劉姥姥至山前樹下盤桓了半晌，又說與他這是什麼樹，這是什麼石，這是什麼花。Jia Mu, wanting to take Liu Laolao along to clear her head, led her to linger for a while beneath the trees before the rockery, telling her what tree this was, what stone that was, and what flower this other one was.劉姥姥一一的領會，又向賈母道：“誰知城里不但人尊貴，連雀兒也是尊貴的。Liu Laolao took it all in one by one, and then said to Jia Mu, "Who would have thought that in the city, not only are the people noble, even the birds are noble too.偏這雀兒到了你們這里，他也變俊了，也會說話了。”眾人不解，因問什麼雀兒變俊了，會講話。Even a bird, once it comes to your place, turns handsome and learns to talk." No one understood her, so they asked which bird had turned handsome and learned to talk.劉姥姥道：“那廊下金架子上站的綠毛紅嘴是鸚哥兒，我是認得的。Liu Laolao said, "The one standing on the golden perch under the veranda, with green feathers and a red beak, is a parrot — that one I do recognize.那籠子里黑老鴰子怎麼又長出鳳頭來，也會說話呢。”眾人聽了都笑將起來。But that black crow in the cage — how has it grown a phoenix's crest, and learned to talk too?" Everyone burst out laughing when they heard this.

须臾乐止，薛姨妈出席笑道：“大家的酒想也都有了，且出去散散再坐罢。”贾母也正要散散，于是大家出席，都随著贾母游玩。贾母因要带著刘姥姥散闷，遂携了刘姥姥至山前树下盘桓了半晌，又说与他这是什么树，这是什么石，这是什么花。刘姥姥一一的领会，又向贾母道：“谁知城里不但人尊贵，连雀儿也是尊贵的。偏这雀儿到了你们这里，他也变俊了，也会说话了。”众人不解，因问什么雀儿变俊了，会讲话。刘姥姥道：“那廊下金架子上站的绿毛红嘴是鹦哥儿，我是认得的。那笼子里黑老鸹子怎么又长出凤头来，也会说话呢。”众人听了都笑将起来。

一時只見丫鬟們來請用點心。After a while some maidservants came to invite them to have some refreshments.賈母道：“吃了兩杯酒，倒也不餓。Jia Mu said, "Having had a couple of cups of wine, I'm not really hungry.也罷，就拿了這里來，大家隨便吃些罷。”丫鬟便去抬了兩張幾來，又端了兩個小捧盒。Very well, just bring it here, and everyone can have a little as they please." The maids then went and carried over two small tables, and brought out two small covered boxes as well.揭開看時，每個盒內兩樣：這盒內一樣是藕粉桂糖糕，一樣是松穰鵝油卷，那盒內一樣是一寸來大的小餃兒，……When they lifted the lids to look, each box held two kinds: in this one, lotus-root-powder cassia-sugar cakes, and one of pine-nut goose-fat rolls; in that one, tiny dumplings about an inch across, and...賈母因問什麼餡兒，婆子們忙回是螃蟹的。Jia Mu asked what filling they had, and the old women hurriedly answered that it was crab.賈母聽了，皺眉說：“這油膩膩的，誰吃這個！”那一樣是奶油炸的各色小面果，也不喜歡。Hearing this, Jia Mu frowned and said, "So greasy — who wants to eat that!" So saying, she made her way toward the east meditation hall.妙玉笑往里讓，賈母道：“我們才都吃了酒肉，你這里頭有菩薩，沖了罪過。Miaoyu smiled and invited them to come inside, but Jia Mu said, "We've just been eating wine and meat — you have Buddhas enshrined in there, and it would be an offense to go in and disturb them.我們這里坐坐，把你的好茶拿來，我們吃一杯就去了。”妙玉聽了，忙去烹了茶來。We'll just sit out here — bring out your good tea, and we'll each have a cup and be on our way." Miaoyu said with a smile, "I know.這是老君眉。”賈母接了，又問是什麼水。This is Laojunmei." Jia Mu took the cup, and then asked what water it was made with.妙玉笑回“是舊年蠲的雨水。”賈母便吃了半盞，便笑著遞與劉姥姥說：“你嘗嘗這個茶。”劉姥姥便一口吃盡，笑道：“好是好，就是淡些，再熬濃些更好了。”賈母眾人都笑起來。Miaoyu answered with a smile, "It's rainwater collected last year." Both of them said with a laugh, "And here you come chasing after us again, angling to sponge some tea.這里并沒你的。”妙玉剛要去取杯，只見道婆收了上面的茶盞來。There's none of it meant for you here." Miaoyu said, "Is this a common vessel?不是我說狂話，只怕你家里未必找的出這麼一個俗器來呢。”寶玉笑道：“俗說‘隨鄉入鄉’，到了你這里，自然把那金玉珠寶一概貶為俗器了。”妙玉聽如此說，十分歡喜，遂又尋出一只九曲十環一百二十節蟠虯整雕竹根的一個大盒出來，笑道：“就剩了這一個，你可吃的了這一海？”寶玉喜的忙道：“吃的了。”妙玉笑道：“你雖吃的了，也沒這些茶糟踏。I'm not just boasting wildly, but I'd wager your own household couldn't produce a 'common vessel' quite like this one." Baoyu said with a laugh, "As the saying goes, 'when in a place, follow its ways' — once one comes to your quarters, naturally all that gold, jade, and pearls get demoted to the rank of common vessels." Hearing him say this, Miaoyu was greatly pleased, and so she went and found yet another large cup — carved whole from a single bamboo root, coiling like a dragon through nine bends, ten rings, and a hundred and twenty knots — and said with a laugh, "This is the only one left — can you manage to drink a whole 'sea' of this?" Baoyu said happily and at once, "I can manage it." Miaoyu said with a laugh, "Even if you could manage it, you still shouldn't waste so much tea on yourself.豈不聞‘一杯為品，二杯即是解渴的蠢物，三杯便是飲牛飲騾了’。Haven't you heard the saying: 'one cup is for savoring; two cups is already just a stupid brute quenching its thirst; three cups is downing it like a cow or a mule drinking'?你吃這一海便成什麼？”說的寶釵，黛玉，寶玉都笑了。If you drank a whole 'sea' of it, what would that make you?" This made Baochai, Daiyu, and Baoyu all laugh.妙玉執壺，只向海內斟了約有一杯。Miaoyu took up the pot and poured into the big cup only about one ordinary cupful.寶玉細細吃了，果覺輕浮無比，賞贊不絕。Baoyu drank it slowly and savored it, and indeed found it incomparably light and delicate, praising it without end.妙玉正色道：“你這遭吃的茶是托他兩個福，獨你來了，我是不給你吃的。”寶玉笑道：“我深知道的，我也不領你的情，只謝他二人便是了。”妙玉聽了，方說：“這話明白。”黛玉因問：“這也是舊年的雨水？”妙玉冷笑道：“你這麼個人，竟是大俗人，連水也嘗不出來。Miaoyu said in a serious tone, "The tea you're drinking this time is only thanks to the good fortune of those other two — if you'd come alone, I wouldn't be giving you any." Baoyu said with a laugh, "I know that very well; I won't credit you with the favor at all, I'll simply thank the two of them instead." Hearing this, Miaoyu said, "Now that's a sensible thing to say." Daiyu then asked, "Is this also rainwater from last year?" Miaoyu said with a cold laugh, "And to think someone like you turns out to be such a hopeless philistine after all, unable even to tell the water apart by taste.這是五年前我在玄墓蟠香寺住著，收的梅花上的雪，共得了那一鬼臉青的花瓮一瓮，總舍不得吃，埋在地下，今年夏天才開了。This is snow I gathered off plum blossoms five years ago, when I was living at Panxiang Si at Xuanmu, and I filled a whole flower-patterned green-glazed jar with it, but I could never bear to drink it, and buried it in the ground — it was only this summer that I finally opened it.我只吃過一回，這是第二回了。I've only drunk it once myself before; this is the second time.你怎麼嘗不出來？How is it you can't taste the difference?隔年蠲的雨水那有這樣輕浮，如何吃得。”黛玉知他天性怪僻，不好多話，亦不好多坐，吃完茶，便約著寶釵走了出來。How could last year's stored rainwater ever be this light and delicate — it wouldn't even be drinkable." Daiyu, knowing Miaoyu's nature was odd and eccentric, thought it best not to say much more, nor to sit too long; once she finished her tea, she asked Baochai along and the two of them went outside.

Hearing this, Miaoyu thought it over for a moment, then nodded and said, "Very well, that will do.幸而那杯子是我沒吃過的，若我使過，我就砸碎了也不能給他。It's fortunate that cup was one I'd never drunk from myself — if I had used it, I would rather smash it to pieces than give it to her.你要給他，我也不管你，只交給你，快拿了去罷。”寶玉笑道：“自然如此，你那里和他說話授受去，越發連你也髒了。If you want to give it to her, that's your affair, I won't stop you — I'll just hand it over to you, so take it and be quick about it." Baoyu said with a laugh, "Of course that's how it should be — if you went over there yourself to speak with her and hand it over, it would only get you dirtied too.只交與我就是了。”妙玉便命人拿來遞與寶玉。Just leave it to me." Miaoyu then had someone bring the cup out and hand it to Baoyu.寶玉接了，又道：“等我們出去了，我叫幾個小么兒來河里打幾桶水來洗地如何？”妙玉笑道：“這更好了，只是你囑咐他們，抬了水只擱在山門外頭牆根下，別進門來。”寶玉道：“這是自然的。”說著，便袖著那杯，遞與賈母房中小丫頭拿著，說：“明日劉姥姥家去，給他帶去罷。”交代明白，賈母已經出來要回去。Baoyu took it, and then said, "Once we've gone, shall I have a few young houseboys come fetch some buckets of water from the river to wash the ground here?" Miaoyu said with a laugh, "That would be even better — only be sure to tell them to just set the water down at the foot of the wall outside the mountain gate, and not come in through the gate at all." Baoyu said, "Naturally." So saying, he tucked the cup into his sleeve and handed it to one of the young maids from Jia Mu's rooms to carry, saying, "Tomorrow when Liu Laolao goes home, give it to her to take with her." Having settled this clearly, he found that Jia Mu had already come out and was ready to head back.妙玉亦不甚留，送出山門，回身便將門閉了。Miaoyu did not press them to stay, but saw them out through the mountain gate, and turning around, shut the gate at once.不在話下。No more need be said of that for now.

宝玉和妙玉陪笑道：“那茶杯虽然脏了，白撂了岂不可惜？依我说，不如就给那贫婆子罢，他卖了也可以度日。你道可使得。”妙玉听了，想了一想，点头说道：“这也罢了。幸而那杯子是我没吃过的，若我使过，我就砸碎了也不能给他。你要给他，我也不管你，只交给你，快拿了去罢。”宝玉笑道：“自然如此，你那里和他说话授受去，越发连你也脏了。只交与我就是了。”妙玉便命人拿来递与宝玉。宝玉接了，又道：“等我们出去了，我叫几个小么儿来河里打几桶水来洗地如何？”妙玉笑道：“这更好了，只是你嘱咐他们，抬了水只搁在山门外头墙根下，别进门来。”宝玉道：“这是自然的。”说著，便袖著那杯，递与贾母房中小丫头拿著，说：“明日刘姥姥家去，给他带去罢。”交代明白，贾母已经出来要回去。妙玉亦不甚留，送出山门，回身便将门闭了。不在话下。

且說賈母因覺身上乏倦，便命王夫人和迎春姊妹陪了薛姨媽去吃酒，自己便往稻香村來歇息。Now to speak of Jia Mu: feeling weary in body, she told Wang Furen and the sisters, including Yingchun, to keep Xue Yima company at the wine, while she herself went to Daoxiang Cun to rest.鳳姐忙命人將小竹椅抬來，賈母坐上，兩個婆子抬起，鳳姐李紈和眾丫鬟婆子圍隨去了，不在話下。Xifeng quickly had a small bamboo chair brought, and once Jia Mu was seated in it, two old women servants carried it, with Xifeng, Li Wan, and the rest of the maids and old women crowding around to accompany her — no more need be said of that.這里薛姨媽也就辭出。Here at the banquet, Xue Yima also took her leave shortly after.王夫人打發文官等出去，將攢盒散與眾丫鬟們吃去，自己便也乘空歇著，隨便歪在方才賈母坐的榻上，命一個小丫頭放下帘子來，又命他捶著腿，吩咐他：“老太太那里有信，你就叫我。”說著也歪著睡著了。Wang Furen sent Wenguan and the others off, and gave the assorted platter to the maids to share and eat, while she herself took the chance to rest, reclining casually on the couch where Jia Mu had just been sitting; she told a young maid to lower the curtain, and also had her rub her legs, instructing her, "If word comes from the old lady's place, wake me at once." So saying, she too lay back and fell asleep.

寶玉湘雲等看著丫鬟們將攢盒擱在山石上，也有坐在山石上的，也有坐在草地下的，也有靠著樹的，也有傍著水的，倒也十分熱鬧。Baoyu, Xiangyun, and the others watched as the maids set the assorted platters down on the rockery; some sat on the rocks themselves, some sat down on the grass, some leaned against trees, some settled by the water's edge — it made for quite a lively scene.一時又見鴛鴦來了，要帶著劉姥姥各處去逛，眾人也都赶著取笑。After a while Yuanyang appeared again, meaning to take Liu Laolao around to look at all the sights, and everyone hurried along too, eager for more amusement.一時來至“省親別墅”的牌坊底下，劉姥姥道：“噯呀！Presently they came to the foot of the archway inscribed "Shengqin Bieshu," and Liu Laolao exclaimed, "Oh my!這里還有個大廟呢。”說著，便爬下磕頭。There's a great temple here too!" So saying, she dropped down and began kowtowing.眾人笑彎了腰。Everyone doubled over with laughter.劉姥姥道：“笑什麼？Liu Laolao said, "What are you laughing at?這牌樓上字我都認得。I recognize every one of the characters on this archway.我們那里這樣的廟宇最多，都是這樣的牌坊，那字就是廟的名字。”眾人笑道：“你認得這是什麼廟？”劉姥姥便抬頭指那字道：“這不是‘玉皇寶殿’四字？”眾人笑的拍手打腳，還要拿他取笑。Where we come from, temples like this are the most common thing, and they all have archways just like this one, with the characters giving the temple's name." Everyone said with a laugh, "Then what temple do you make this out to be?" Liu Laolao raised her head, pointed at the characters, and said, "Aren't these the four characters for 'The Jade Emperor's Precious Hall'?" Everyone laughed so hard they clapped their hands and stamped their feet, and still wanted to go on teasing her about it.劉姥姥覺得腹內一陣亂響，忙的拉著一個小丫頭，要了兩張紙就解衣。Grandma Liu felt her stomach rumbling in a commotion, and hurriedly grabbed a little maid, asked for two sheets of paper, and began undoing her clothes.眾人又是笑，又忙喝他“這里使不得！”忙命一個婆子帶了東北上去了。Everyone laughed, and hastily shouted at her, "You can't do it here!" and quickly had an old woman-servant take her off to the northeast.那婆子指與地方，便樂得走開去歇息。The old woman pointed out the spot for her, then gladly went off to rest.

宝玉湘云等看著丫鬟们将攒盒搁在山石上，也有坐在山石上的，也有坐在草地下的，也有靠著树的，也有傍著水的，倒也十分热闹。一时又见鸳鸯来了，要带著刘姥姥各处去逛，众人也都赶著取笑。一时来至“省亲别墅”的牌坊底下，刘姥姥道：“嗳呀！这里还有个大庙呢。”说著，便爬下磕头。众人笑弯了腰。刘姥姥道：“笑什么？这牌楼上字我都认得。我们那里这样的庙宇最多，都是这样的牌坊，那字就是庙的名字。”众人笑道：“你认得这是什么庙？”刘姥姥便抬头指那字道：“这不是‘玉皇宝殿’四字？”众人笑的拍手打脚，还要拿他取笑。刘姥姥觉得腹内一阵乱响，忙的拉著一个小丫头，要了两张纸就解衣。众人又是笑，又忙喝他“这里使不得！”忙命一个婆子带了东北上去了。那婆子指与地方，便乐得走开去歇息。

那劉姥姥因喝了些酒，他脾氣不與黃酒相宜，且吃了許多油膩飲食，發渴多喝了幾碗茶，不免通瀉起來，蹲了半日方完。Grandma Liu, having drunk some wine that did not agree with her constitution, and having eaten a great deal of greasy food besides, grew thirsty and drank several bowls of tea, so that she could not help having a bout of diarrhea, and squatted there for half a day before she was done.及出廁來，酒被風禁，且年邁之人，蹲了半天，忽一起身，只覺得眼花頭眩，辨不出路徑。When she came out of the privy, the wind checked the wine's effect, and being an old person who had squatted for so long, the moment she stood up she felt her eyes blur and her head spin, and could not make out the way.四顧一望，皆是樹木山石樓台房舍，卻不知那一處是往那里去的了，只得認著一條石子路慢慢的走來。Looking about on every side, she saw nothing but trees, rockeries, towers and terraces, and houses, but had no idea which way led where, so she had no choice but to follow a pebbled path and walk slowly on.及至到了房舍跟前，又找不著門，再找了半日，忽見一帶竹篱，劉姥姥心中自忖道：“這里也有扁豆架子。”一面想，一面順著花障走了來，得了一個月洞門進去。When she reached the buildings, she could not find the door, and after searching about for a good while, she suddenly saw a stretch of bamboo fence. Grandma Liu thought to herself, "So there are bean trellises here too." Thinking this, she walked on along the flower hedge, and came upon a moon gate through which she entered.只見迎面忽有一帶水池，只有七八尺寬，石頭砌岸，里面碧瀏清水流往那邊去了，上面有一塊白石橫架在上面。Right before her she suddenly saw a stretch of pond, only seven or eight feet wide, its banks lined with stone, the clear green water within flowing off to one side, and a slab of white stone laid crosswise over it.劉姥姥便度石過去，順著石子甬路走去，轉了兩個彎子，只見有一房門。Grandma Liu stepped across the stone, and followed a paved path along, and after turning two corners, she saw a door to a room.于是進了房門，只見迎面一個女孩兒，滿面含笑迎了出來。So she went in through the door, and there facing her was a girl, coming out to greet her with a face full of smiles.劉姥姥忙笑道：“姑娘們把我丟下來了，要我碰頭碰到這里來。”說了，只覺那女孩兒不答。Grandma Liu hurriedly said with a laugh, "The young ladies went off and left me behind, so I had to bump my way here." Having said this, she noticed the girl gave no answer.劉姥姥便赶來拉他的手，“咕咚”一聲，便撞到板壁上，把頭碰的生疼。Grandma Liu then hurried over to take her hand, and with a "thunk" she ran straight into a wooden partition, knocking her head until it ached badly.細瞧了一瞧，原來是一幅畫兒。Looking closely, she found it was in fact a painting.劉姥姥自忖道：“原來畫兒有這樣活凸出來的。”一面想，一面看，一面又用手摸去，卻是一色平的，點頭歎了兩聲。Grandma Liu thought to herself, "So a painting can stand out this lifelike." Thinking this, she looked, and reached out to touch it with her hand, only to find it was perfectly flat all over, and she nodded and sighed a couple of times.一轉身方得了一個小門，門上挂著蔥綠撒花軟帘。Turning around, she then found a small door, over which hung a soft scallion-green curtain sprinkled with a flower pattern.劉姥姥掀帘進去，抬頭一看，只見四面牆壁玲瓏剔透，琴劍瓶爐皆貼在牆上，錦籠紗罩，金彩珠光，連地下踩的磚，皆是碧綠鑿花，竟越發把眼花了，找門出去，那里有門？Grandma Liu lifted the curtain and went in, and looking up she saw that the walls on all four sides were exquisitely carved and openwork, with zithers, swords, vases and censers all mounted flat against the walls, brocade cages and gauze covers, golden colors and pearly light, and even the bricks underfoot were all carved with green flower patterns — this only dazzled her eyes the more, and when she looked for the door to get out, where was any door to be found?左一架書，右一架屏。On the left stood a case of books, on the right a screen.剛從屏後得了一門轉去，只見他親家母也從外面迎了進來。Just as she found a door behind the screen and turned to go through it, she saw her son's mother-in-law also coming in to meet her from outside.劉姥姥詫异，忙問道：“你想是見我這幾日沒家去，虧你找我來。Grandma Liu was astonished, and hurriedly asked, "You must have noticed I hadn't gone home these past few days — how good of you to come find me.那一位姑娘帶你進來的？”他親家只是笑，不還言。Which young lady brought you in?" Her in-law only smiled, and did not answer.劉姥姥笑道：“你好沒見世面，見這園里的花好，你就沒死活戴了一頭。”他親家也不答。Grandma Liu said with a laugh, "You really haven't seen much of the world — seeing the flowers in this garden were nice, you went and stuck a whole headful of them on, come what may." Her in-law still did not answer.便心下忽然想起：“常聽大富貴人家有一种穿衣鏡，這別是我在鏡子里頭呢罷。”說畢伸手一摸，再細一看，可不是，四面雕空紫檀板壁將鏡子嵌在中間。Then it suddenly occurred to her: "I've often heard that grand wealthy households have a kind of dressing mirror — could this be me looking at myself in a mirror?" No sooner said than she reached out her hand to touch it, and looking closely again, sure enough, it was a mirror set into the middle of a carved openwork rosewood panel.因說：“這已經攔住，如何走出去呢？”一面說，一面只管用手摸。So she said, "This is blocking my way already — how am I to get out?" And as she spoke, she kept feeling about with her hand.這鏡子原是西洋机括，可以開合。This mirror was in fact fitted with a Western mechanism, and could be opened and closed.不意劉姥姥亂摸之間，其力巧合，便撞開消息，掩過鏡子，露出門來。Without meaning to, as Grandma Liu fumbled about, her pushing happened by chance to strike the catch, and she knocked the mirror aside, revealing a door.劉姥姥又驚又喜，邁步出來，忽見有一副最精致的床帳。Grandma Liu, both startled and delighted, stepped out through it, and suddenly saw a most exquisite set of bed curtains.他此時又帶了七八分醉，又走乏了，便一屁股坐在床上，只說歇歇，不承望身不由己，前仰後合的，朦朧著兩眼，一歪身就睡熟在床上。By now she was seven or eight parts drunk, and worn out from walking besides, so she plopped herself down on the bed, meaning only to rest a moment, but little expecting that she would lose control of herself — rocking forward and back, her eyes growing hazy, until she tipped over and fell fast asleep on the bed.

且說眾人等他不見，板兒見沒了他姥姥，急的哭了。Meanwhile, the others waited for her but she did not appear, and Ban'er, seeing his grandmother gone, began to cry in distress.眾人都笑道：“別是掉在茅廁里了？Everyone said with a laugh, "Could she have fallen into the privy?快叫人去瞧瞧。”因命兩個婆子去找，回來說沒有。Quick, send someone to check." So they sent two old women-servants to look, and they came back saying she was not there.眾人各處搜尋不見。Everyone searched all around but could not find her.襲人度其道路：“是他醉了迷了路，順著這一條路往我們後院子里去了。Xiren, working out the route she must have taken, thought: "She must have gotten drunk and lost her way, and gone along this path toward our back courtyard.若進了花障子到後房門進去，雖然碰頭，還有小丫頭們知道，若不進花障子再往西南上去，若繞出去還好，若繞不出去，可夠他繞回子好的。If she went through the flower hedge and in by the back door, even if she bumped her head, the little maids there would know of it; but if she didn't go through the flower hedge and instead went on southwest, then if she circled her way back out it would be fine, but if she couldn't find her way out, she'd have quite a time wandering about.我且瞧瞧去。”一面想，一面回來，進了怡紅院便叫人，誰知那幾個房子里小丫頭已偷空頑去了。I'd better go have a look." Thinking this, she made her way back, and upon entering Yihong Yuan she called out for someone, but as it happened, the little maids in those rooms had slipped off to play while no one was watching.

且说众人等他不见，板儿见没了他姥姥，急的哭了。众人都笑道：“别是掉在茅厕里了？快叫人去瞧瞧。”因命两个婆子去找，回来说没有。众人各处搜寻不见。袭人度其道路：“是他醉了迷了路，顺著这一条路往我们后院子里去了。若进了花障子到后房门进去，虽然碰头，还有小丫头们知道，若不进花障子再往西南上去，若绕出去还好，若绕不出去，可够他绕回子好的。我且瞧瞧去。”一面想，一面回来，进了怡红院便叫人，谁知那几个房子里小丫头已偷空顽去了。

襲人一直進了房門，轉過集錦槅子，就聽的鼾齁如雷。Xiren went straight in through the door, and as she turned past the cabinet of curio-shelves, she heard snoring as loud as thunder.忙進來，只聞見酒屁臭氣，滿屋一瞧，只見劉姥姥扎手舞腳的仰臥在床上。She hurried in, and caught a whiff of the foul stench of wine and wind, and looking about the room, she saw Grandma Liu sprawled on her back on the bed, arms and legs flung about.襲人這一驚不小，慌忙赶上來將他沒死活的推醒。This gave Xiren quite a fright, and she rushed over and shook her awake without ceremony.那劉姥姥驚醒，睜眼見了襲人，連忙爬起來道：“姑娘，我失錯了！Grandma Liu woke with a start, and opening her eyes to see Xiren, scrambled hastily up, saying, "Miss, I've made a terrible mistake!并沒弄髒了床帳。”一面說一面用手去撣。I haven't soiled the bed curtains, have I?" she said, brushing at them with her hand as she spoke.襲人恐驚動了人，被寶玉知道了，只向他搖手，不叫他說話。Xiren, afraid of alarming anyone and having Baoyu find out, only waved her hand at her, signaling her not to speak.忙將鼎內貯了三四把百合香，仍用罩子罩上。She hurriedly put three or four handfuls of lily incense into the censer, and covered it again with its cover.些須收拾收拾，所喜不曾嘔吐，忙悄悄的笑道：“不相，有我呢。After tidying things up a little — fortunately Grandma Liu had not vomited — Xiren said quietly with a smile, "Never mind, I'm here.你隨我出來。”劉姥姥跟了襲人，出至小丫頭們房中，命他坐了，向他說道：“你就說醉倒在山子石上打了個盹兒。”劉姥姥答應知道。Come out with me." Grandma Liu followed Xiren out to the little maids' room, where Xiren had her sit down, and said to her, "Just say you got drunk and dozed off on the rockery." Grandma Liu said she understood.又與他兩碗茶吃，方覺酒醒了，因問道：“這是那個小姐的繡房，這樣精致？Xiren then gave her two bowls of tea to drink, after which she began to feel the wine wear off, and so she asked, "Whose young lady's embroidered chamber is this, to be so exquisite?我就象到了天宮里的一樣。”襲人微微笑道：“這個么，是寶二爺的臥室。”那劉姥姥嚇的不敢作聲。I felt just as though I'd come to a palace in heaven." Xiren said with a faint smile, "This? This is Master Bao's bedroom." Grandma Liu was so frightened she dared not say a word.襲人帶他從前面出去，見了眾人，只說他在草地下睡著了，帶了他來的。Xiren led her out by the front way, and when they met the others, said only that she had found her asleep on the grass and had brought her along.眾人都不理會，也就罷了。No one paid it any mind, and so the matter was let drop.

袭人一直进了房门，转过集锦槅子，就听的鼾齁如雷。忙进来，只闻见酒屁臭气，满屋一瞧，只见刘姥姥扎手舞脚的仰卧在床上。袭人这一惊不小，慌忙赶上来将他没死活的推醒。那刘姥姥惊醒，睁眼见了袭人，连忙爬起来道：“姑娘，我失错了！并没弄脏了床帐。”一面说一面用手去掸。袭人恐惊动了人，被宝玉知道了，只向他摇手，不叫他说话。忙将鼎内贮了三四把百合香，仍用罩子罩上。些须收拾收拾，所喜不曾呕吐，忙悄悄的笑道：“不相，有我呢。你随我出来。”刘姥姥跟了袭人，出至小丫头们房中，命他坐了，向他说道：“你就说醉倒在山子石上打了个盹儿。”刘姥姥答应知道。又与他两碗茶吃，方觉酒醒了，因问道：“这是那个小姐的绣房，这样精致？我就象到了天宫里的一样。”袭人微微笑道：“这个么，是宝二爷的卧室。”那刘姥姥吓的不敢作声。袭人带他从前面出去，见了众人，只说他在草地下睡著了，带了他来的。众人都不理会，也就罢了。

一時賈母醒了，就在稻香村擺晚飯。Presently Grandmother Jia woke up, and dinner was laid out at Daoxiang Cun.賈母因覺懶懶的，也不吃飯，便坐了竹椅小敞轎，回至房中歇息，命鳳姐兒等去吃飯。Grandmother Jia, feeling listless, did not eat, but took a small open bamboo-chair sedan back to her room to rest, telling Xifeng and the others to go and eat.他姊妹方复進園來。Only then did the sisters go back into the garden.要知端的，且聽下回分解。If you want to know what happened, listen to the next chapter's explanation.
