Daiyu Wins First Place with Chrysanthemum Verses; Baochai Satirizes in Crab Poems

宿To resume: the two of them, Baochai and Xiangyun, having settled their plan, nothing more happened that night.便The next day Xiangyun accordingly invited Grandmother Jia and the others to admire the osmanthus blossoms.:“。”Grandmother Jia and the rest all said, "Since she is in such high spirits, we really ought to indulge this refined whim of hers." By noon, sure enough, Grandmother Jia brought Lady Wang and Xifeng, and also invited Aunt Xue and the others, into the garden.?”:“。”:“。”:“。”Grandmother Jia then asked, "Which spot would be best?" Lady Wang said, "Wherever Old Ancestress prefers, that is where we shall go." Xifeng said, "The Lotus Fragrance Pavilion is already laid out, and those two osmanthus trees under the hillside are blooming beautifully besides, and the river water is clear and green — sitting in the pavilion right in the middle of the river, wouldn't it be airy and open, and the water would look refreshing to the eye too." Grandmother Jia, hearing this, said, "That's very true." So saying, she led everyone toward the Lotus Fragrance Pavilion. It turned out that this Lotus Fragrance Pavilion was built in the middle of the pond, with windows on all four sides, and winding corridors to left and right giving access, likewise spanning the water to join the bank, while behind it a zigzag bamboo bridge connected it unseen.:“。”As everyone crossed the bamboo bridge, Xifeng hurried up to support Grandmother Jia, saying as she did so, "Old Ancestress, just take big strides and walk on, it doesn't matter — this bamboo bridge is supposed to creak and sway like that."

Presently they entered the pavilion, and there, outside the balustrade, two more bamboo tables had been set separately — on one were laid out cups, chopsticks, and wine vessels, and on the other were set out tea whisks, tea bowls, and all sorts of tea things. On that side two or three maids were fanning the stove to boil tea, while on this side several other maids were likewise fanning a stove to warm the wine.:“西。”:“。”:“。”Grandmother Jia, delighted, hurriedly asked, "Whoever thought of this tea arrangement thought of everything, and what a fine spot besides — everything so clean." Xiangyun said with a smile, "It was Cousin Bao who helped me get it ready." Grandmother Jia said, "I always say this child is thoughtful, she plans everything so properly." As she spoke, she also noticed the couplet inlaid with black lacquer and mother-of-pearl hanging on the pillar, and told someone to read it aloud.Xiangyun read it out:

"The lotus's shadow breaks as the orchid oars return; the water-caltrop's fragrance deepens where the bamboo bridge is traced."

:“’。Grandmother Jia, having heard this, looked up again at the horizontal tablet, and then, turning her head, said to Aunt Xue, "When I was small, we too had a pavilion like this at home, called something like 'Pillowed-in-Rosy-Clouds Pavilion.'At that time I was just about the same age as these children here, and every day I would go off to play with my sisters. That day, who would have thought, I lost my footing and fell in, and very nearly drowned; only with great difficulty was I rescued and pulled up, but in the end my head struck against a wooden peg and was cut open.Even now, that spot on my temple the size of a fingertip, that little hollow, is the scar from that very injury.。”:“Everyone was afraid I had taken in too much water, and also afraid I had caught a chill, and all said I could not live — yet who would have guessed I actually recovered." Xifeng, without waiting for anyone else to speak, said first with a laugh, "If you hadn't lived back then, who would there be now to enjoy all this great fortune!使This just goes to show that Old Ancestress's fortune and longevity were no small thing even from childhood — the gods and spirits themselves contrived to knock out that little hollow, just right for holding fortune and longevity. The God of Longevity originally has a hollow on his head too, but because it's filled to overflowing with boundless fortune and longevity, it ends up bulging out higher instead." Before she had even finished speaking, Grandmother Jia and everyone else were already laughing until they went weak.:“。”:“。”:“。”:“。”:“Grandmother Jia said with a laugh, "This little monkey has been spoiled past bearing, forever making fun of me — it makes me want to tear that glib mouth of yours." Xifeng said with a laugh, "We're about to eat crabs later, and I was afraid the chill might settle in Old Ancestress's chest, so I wanted to make Old Ancestress laugh a little to lighten the mood — once you're in good spirits, eating a couple extra won't hurt." Grandmother Jia said with a laugh, "Tomorrow I'll have you follow me day and night — it does me good to laugh like this often; you're not to go home anymore." Lady Wang said with a laugh, "It's precisely because Old Ancestress is fond of her that she's been spoiled like this — and still to speak this way, she'll only grow more impudent from now on." Grandmother Jia said with a laugh, "I like her being this way, and besides, she isn't one of those children who doesn't know her place. At home among ourselves, with no outsiders present, mother and daughters-in-law ought to be just like this.。”So long as the proper forms aren't broken, that's enough — there's no need to make her stand about like some little idol of a spirit."

So saying, they all went into the pavilion together, and after tea had been served, Xifeng busied herself setting up the tables and calling for cups and chopsticks.西At the head table sat Grandmother Jia, Aunt Xue, Baochai, Daiyu, and Baoyu; at the east table, Shi Xiangyun, Lady Wang, and Yingchun, Tanchun, and Xichun; at the west table by the door, seats were set out as a formality for Li Wan and Xifeng, though neither of the two dared actually sit, and instead waited on Grandmother Jia's and Lady Wang's tables.:“。”Xifeng instructed, "Don't bring out too many crabs at once — keep them in the steamer still, bring ten at a time, and bring more once these are eaten." She then had water brought to wash her hands, and stood before Grandmother Jia picking out the crab meat, offering the first portion to Aunt Xue.:“。”便Aunt Xue said, "I enjoy picking it apart and eating it myself, there's no need for anyone to offer me any." Xifeng then presented it to Grandmother Jia instead. The second portion she gave to Baoyu, and said as well, "Bring the wine warmed piping hot." She also had the young maids go fetch the green-bean flour scented with chrysanthemum leaves and osmanthus stamens, to have ready for washing hands.Shi Xiangyun kept them company and ate one crab, then left her seat to serve the others, and also went outside and had two plates filled and sent over to Aunt Zhao and Aunt Zhou.:“Then she saw Xifeng come over and say, "You're not used to managing things — just go and eat your own food.。”Let me handle things for you for now, and once everyone's finished I'll eat." Xiangyun would not agree, and instead had two more tables set up on the corridor over there, inviting Yuanyang, Hupo, Caixia, Caiyun, and Ping'er to sit.:“。”:“。”Yuanyang then said to Xifeng with a smile, "With Second Mistress here waiting on everyone, we can go off and eat." Xifeng said, "You all just go ahead, leave everything to me." So saying, Shi Xiangyun took her seat at the table again.Xifeng and Li Wan too merely went through the motions for form's sake.:“Xifeng still came down to see to things, and presently went out to the corridor, where Yuanyang and the others were just eating away happily; seeing her come, Yuanyang and the others stood up and said, "What has Madam come out here for again?。”:“Do let us enjoy ourselves a while too." Xifeng said with a smile, "That little imp Yuanyang gets more shameless by the day — here I am standing in for you on duty, and instead of being grateful you complain about me.。”Quick, pour me a cup of wine to drink." Yuanyang laughingly hurried to pour a cup of wine and brought it to Xifeng's lips, and Xifeng tipped her head back and drank it down.Hupo and Caixia likewise poured a cup and brought it to Xifeng's lips, and Xifeng drank that one too.:“。”:“。” :“Ping'er had already picked out a shell full of roe and brought it over; Xifeng said, "Pour on plenty of ginger vinegar." and ate it too, then said with a smile, "You all sit and eat, I'll be off now." Yuanyang said with a laugh, "How shameless, eating our food." Xifeng said with a laugh, "Don't you get up to mischief with me.。”:“You know perfectly well your Second Master Lian has taken a fancy to you, and means to beg Old Ancestress to let him have you as a concubine." Yuanyang said, "Pah, and this from the mouth of a Madam no less!。”If I don't smear your face with this fishy hand of mine it'll hardly do." So saying, she rushed forward to smear it on her.:“。”:“Xifeng pleaded, "Dear sister, spare me just this once." Hupo said with a smile, "Yuanyang's about to let her off — but will Ping'er let her off too?。” 使Just look at her — she hasn't even finished two crabs, and already she's downed a whole saucer of vinegar; no wonder she's such a one for sourness." Ping'er, who at that moment was just picking apart a crab full of roe, hearing herself mocked like this, took the crab and smeared it straight at Hupo's face, scolding with a laugh, "You little imp with the wagging tongue!" Hupo, laughing, dodged aside just then, so Ping'er's swipe missed and, lunging forward, landed square instead on Xifeng's cheek.Xifeng, who was just then trading banter with Yuanyang, was caught off guard and gave a startled cry of surprise.Everyone could no longer hold back and burst out laughing uproariously.:“Xifeng too could not help cursing with a laugh, "You wretched hussy!。”Your eyes must have slipped while you were eating, smearing it on your own mother like that." Ping'er hurried over to wipe it off for her, and went herself to fetch water.:“Yuanyang said, "Amitabha!。”:“。”:“This is retribution." Over on Grandmother Jia's side, hearing this, they called out again and again, "What's so funny over there — tell us too, so we can have a laugh." Yuanyang and the others hurriedly called back with a laugh, "Second Mistress came to snatch some crab to eat, and Ping'er got annoyed and smeared a whole faceful of crab roe on her own mistress.。”Mistress and maid are having a fight." Grandmother Jia and Lady Wang and the rest, hearing this, laughed too.:“。” Grandmother Jia said with a laugh, "Just look how pitiful she is — give her a bit of the little legs and the belly meat to eat and be done with it." Yuanyang and the others answered with a laugh, and called out loudly again, "There's a whole table full of legs here, Second Mistress, just help yourself." Xifeng washed her face and came back, and waited on Grandmother Jia and the others eating for a while longer.Daiyu alone did not dare eat much, only having a little bit of the meat from the pincers before leaving the table.

After a while Grandmother Jia stopped eating, and everyone then dispersed, all washing their hands; some looked at the flowers, some played with the water and watched the fish, wandering about for a while.:“Lady Wang then said to Grandmother Jia, "There's a strong wind here, and we've just eaten crab besides — Old Ancestress had really better go back to her rooms and rest a while.。”:“If you're in the mood, you can come out and enjoy it again tomorrow." Grandmother Jia, hearing this, said with a laugh, "Just so.I was afraid you were all enjoying yourselves, and if I left I was afraid it would spoil your fun.。”:“。”Since you put it that way, then let's all go." She turned and instructed Xiangyun besides, "Don't let your Cousin Bao and Cousin Lin eat too much." Xiangyun assented.:“She also instructed Xiangyun and Baochai both, "You two shouldn't eat too much either.西。”That thing may taste good, but it isn't really wholesome — eating too much of it gives you a stomachache." The two of them hurriedly assented and saw her out of the garden, then came back again, and had the remains of the feast cleared away and the tables reset.:“Baoyu said, "No need to set anything out again — let's compose poems instead.Just put that big round table in the middle, and leave the wine and dishes on it.便。”:“。”:“。”There's no need to keep to fixed seats either — whoever feels like eating can go and eat, isn't it more convenient to sit as we please." Baochai said, "That makes very good sense." Xiangyun said, "Even so, there are still the others to think of." So she also had another table set separately, picked out hot crabs, and invited Xiren, Zijuan, Siqi, Daishu, Ruhua, Yingr, Cuimo, and the rest to sit together in one group.使Under the hillside beneath the osmanthus trees two flower-patterned felt rugs were spread, and the old women in attendance and the young maids were all told to sit there too, free to eat and drink as they pleased, and to come only when called.

Xiangyun then took the poem topics and pinned them to the wall with a needle.:“。”Everyone, looking them over, all said, "Novel indeed, but we're afraid we won't manage to write anything." Xiangyun then explained once again the reasoning behind not restricting the rhymes.:“。”竿Baoyu said, "This is exactly the right way to do it — I too dislike restricted rhymes more than anything." Lin Daiyu, since she was not drinking much wine and was not eating crab either, had someone bring over an embroidered stool and sat leaning against the balustrade, holding a fishing rod and fishing.Baochai held a spray of osmanthus in her hand and played with it for a while, then leaned over the window sill, plucked some osmanthus buds, and tossed them onto the water's surface, drawing the swimming fish up to nibble at them.Xiangyun stared off into space for a while, then went to keep Xiren and the others company for a while, and also called out to the crowd down at the foot of the hill to just eat their fill without restraint.Tanchun, with Li Wan and Xichun, stood in the shade of the drooping willows watching the gulls and egrets.穿Yingchun, meanwhile, sat alone in the shade of the flowers, holding a flower-needle and threading jasmine blossoms.Baoyu, for his part, watched Daiyu fish for a while, then leaned over beside Baochai to exchange a few words and laughs, then watched Xiren and the others eating crab for a while, joining in himself to drink a couple of sips of wine.Xiren then picked out a shell of meat and gave it to him to eat.竿Daiyu set down her fishing rod, walked over to the table, picked up that black-silver plum-blossom self-pouring wine pot, and chose a small begonia-shaped, jade-green stone banana-leaf cup.The maid, seeing this and knowing she meant to drink, hurried over to pour for her.:“。” :“。”便Daiyu said, "You all just go on and eat, let me pour for myself — that's more amusing this way." So saying, she poured half a cup, and looking at it found it was yellow wine, and so said, "I've eaten a bit of crab, and I feel a slight ache at the pit of my stomach — I really need to drink something hot, some distilled spirits." Baoyu said quickly, "There is distilled spirits." and had a pot of the wine steeped with mimosa blossoms warmed up.便Daiyu too only took one sip and set it down.便Baochai came over as well, and taking a separate cup, drank a sip too, then dipped her brush and, up on the wall, marked off the first title, 'Reminiscing on Chrysanthemums,' and beneath it appended the name 'Hengwu.':“。”:“。”Baoyu said hurriedly, "Dear sister, I already have four lines ready for the second one — do let me take that one." Baochai said with a smile, "I've only just managed to get one poem together, and here you are in such a hurry already." Daiyu, without saying a word, took the brush and marked off the eighth title, 'Questioning the Chrysanthemums,' and went on to mark off the eleventh, 'Chrysanthemum Dream,' as well, likewise appending the name 'Xiao.'Baoyu too picked up the brush, and marked off the second title, 'Seeking the Chrysanthemums,' likewise appending the name 'Jiang.':“》,》。”:“。”》《Tanchun came over to look and said, "No one has done 'Wearing Chrysanthemums in the Hair' yet — let me take this 'Wearing Chrysanthemums.'" She also pointed at Baoyu and said with a laugh, "It was just announced that no boudoir language is to be used at all — you'd better be careful." As she spoke, Shi Xiangyun came over, and in one stroke marked off both the fourth and fifth titles, 'Facing the Chrysanthemums' and 'Offering the Chrysanthemums,' likewise appending the name 'Xiang.':“。”:“。”:“’,Tanchun said, "You ought to take a studio-name too." Xiangyun said with a smile, "Though our household does have several pavilions and lodges nowadays, I don't actually live in any of them, so it would feel pointless to borrow one of their names." Baochai said with a smile, "Just now Old Ancestress mentioned that your family too once had a water-pavilion called 'Pillowed-in-Rosy-Clouds Pavilion' — surely that counts as yours.。”便Even though it's gone now, you are still its former mistress after all." Everyone agreed this made sense, and Baoyu, without waiting for Xiangyun to move, at once crossed out the character 'Xiang' for her and changed it to the character 'Xia.'After about another meal-time's interval, all twelve topics were complete, and each poet copied out their own, handing them all to Yingchun, who took a fresh sheet of snow-wave-patterned paper and copied them all out together, appending beneath each poem the studio-name of whoever had written it.Li Wan and the others started reading from the beginning:

Reminiscing on Chrysanthemums

Hengwu Jun (Lady of the Fragrant Herbs)

西Gazing forlornly into the west wind, nursing my gloomy thoughts — the season when the smartweed reddens and the reeds turn white, breaking the heart.

The old garden lies empty behind its hedge, autumn leaving no trace; but the thin moon and cold frost, in dreams, still know.

Longing after longing, my heart follows the homebound wild geese into the distance; sitting in the stillness, I listen, entranced, to the evening fulling-block.

Who pities me, sick with love for the yellow blossoms? I comfort myself with the promise that the Double Ninth will surely come again.

At leisure, taking advantage of clear frosty weather, I go out for a ramble — wine cup and medicine bowl, let me not linger over them.

Whose garden are they planted in, beneath the moon before the frost? Beyond the rail, along the hedge — where does the sorrow lie?

On wax-coated clogs I come from afar, my mood eager and light; chanting coolly, unceasingly, my delight knows no bounds.

If the yellow blossoms could understand and pity this poet, let them not fail the walking-staff hung up in their honor this very morning.

Planting Chrysanthemums

Hoe in hand, I move them from the autumn garden myself, planting them deliberately by the hedge, before the courtyard.

Last night, unexpectedly, a rain revived them; this morning I rejoice all the more to see them open, bearing frost.

Chanting coolly of autumn's colors, a thousand poems' worth; drunk, I pour a libation of cold fragrance, a single cup of wine.

Watered from the spring, sealed in with mud, tended with care — well I know the well-side path stays free of worldly dust.

Moved from another garden, prized as dear as gold, one cluster pale, one cluster deep.

Amid the sparse hedge, bareheaded, I sit; within the cold clear fragrance, hugging my knees, I chant.

Counting them over, none proves as proud of the world as you; looking closer, only I am your true confidant.

Autumn's light slips by swiftly — let us not waste it; facing one another, we ought indeed to cherish every inch of shadow.

Across the seats, their fragrance shares the dew of the three garden paths; setting my book aside, I face a single spray of autumn.

In the clear frost, the paper canopy brings fresh dreams; in the cold garden, the slanting sun recalls old rambles.

Proud of the world, and this too because we share the same nature — the spring breeze's peach and plum blossoms never lingered so.

Chanting of the Chrysanthemums

Xiaoxiang Feizi (Consort of the Xiao and Xiang Rivers)

The unruly demon of poetry besets me from dusk to dawn; circling the hedge, leaning against the rock, I murmur low to myself.

At my brush's tip dwells their elegance, and I write them facing the frost; between my lips lingers their fragrance, and I chant them facing the moon.

The whole page pities itself, inscribing its pure resentment — who can fathom, from a few words, the autumn heart confided there?

Ever since Tao Yuanming once judged and ranked them, their lofty spirit has been spoken of for a thousand years, down to this very day.

Painting the Chrysanthemums

画菊

Hengwu Jun

This is but idle brushwork after poetry, no telling how far the wild fancy runs — how could it compare with true painting, worth measuring seriously?

Clustered leaves splashed into a thousand dots of ink; gathered blossoms dyed with a few traces of frost.

Light and dark, its spirit is caught in silhouette before the wind; lithe and free, it breathes autumn's fragrance beneath the wrist.

Do not take it for one idly plucked by the eastern hedge — pasted on a screen, it merely offers comfort for the Double Ninth.

Questioning the Chrysanthemum

问菊

Xiaoxiang Feizi

Wishing to ask of autumn's feelings, none among the crowd can tell me; murmuring, hands clasped behind my back, I knock at the eastern hedge.

Aloof and proud of the world, with whom would you retire into hiding? Blooming just as other flowers do, why come so late?

Dew in the garden, frost in the courtyard — how lonely it must be; when the wild geese go home and the crickets sicken, do you too feel longing?

Do not say the whole world has no one to speak with you; if you could only understand speech, why not spare a few words now.

Wearing Chrysanthemums

Jiaoxia Ke

Vased as an offering, planted by the hedge, busy every day — once plucked, do not mistake it for adornment before a mirror.

The young lord of Chang'an is besotted with flowers by nature; the Master of Pengze was ever mad for wine.

Short sidelocks lie chilled, damp with dew from the three paths; the hemp kerchief is fragrant, dyed with the frost of deep autumn.

Such lofty feeling finds no favor in the eyes of worldly men — let them clap their hands and laugh from the roadside.

Chrysanthemum Shadow

Zhenxia Jiuyou

Autumn light, layer upon layer, fold upon fold, steals along and silently shifts within the three paths.

Through the window a sparse lamp traces near and far; through the hedge broken moonlight locks in delicate filigree.

The cold blossom lingers in reflection — its soul ought to stay; frost's imprint conveys its spirit, yet even dreams turn empty.

Cherish this hidden fragrance, do not trample it to pieces — who, with wine-dimmed eyes, can make out its hazy shape?

Chrysanthemum Dream

Xiaoxiang Feizi

Beside the hedge, deep in autumn slumber, one wakes clear-headed from a single sleep; mingled with clouds, companioned by the moon, nothing is quite distinct.

Ascending to immortality is not out of longing for Zhuangzi's butterfly; recalling old times, I still seek the pact with Magistrate Tao.

Drifting into sleep, lingering on, I follow the wild geese until their cries break off; startled awake again and again, vexed by the chirping of crickets.

Waking, to whom shall I tell this hidden sorrow? Withered grass and cold mist hold boundless feeling.

Fading Chrysanthemums

残菊

Jiaoxia Ke

Dew congeals, frost thickens, and the blooms gradually droop and lean — the feast of admiration has only just passed the time of Slight Snow.

The stem still holds lingering fragrance, its gold grown pale; the branch has no whole leaves left, its green all tattered and scattered.

Half the bed lies in fallen moonlight, the crickets' cry sounds sickly; ten thousand miles of cold cloud, the geese's formation lags behind.

Next year's autumn wind will surely bring us together again — for this brief parting, do not fall to longing.

Everyone read one poem and praised it, then read another and praised that too, going on and on lauding one another's work.:“Li Wan said with a smile, "Let me give a fair, overall judgment.Looking at them as a whole, each person has her own striking lines.:《,《,《》《》《》《》《。”。”:“。”:“。”:“’,。‘。”:“。”:“,‘’,‘’,。”:“’,‘’,。”:“‘’,‘’,。”:“’,‘’,。”"Today's fair judgment: 'Ode to the Chrysanthemum' first, 'Questioning the Chrysanthemum' second, 'Chrysanthemum Dream' third — the subject is fresh, the poem is fresh, and the conception is fresher still; there is no help for it, the Xiaoxiang Consort must be named champion. After these come 'Wearing Chrysanthemums,' 'Facing the Chrysanthemum,' 'Offering Chrysanthemums,' 'Painting Chrysanthemums,' and 'Recalling Chrysanthemums,' in that order." Hearing this, Baoyu clapped his hands with delight and cried, "Exactly right, perfectly fair!" Daiyu said, "Mine wasn't good either — in the end it suffers from being a bit too delicate and clever." Li Wan said, "Cleverness is fine, so long as it doesn't show forced piling-up or awkwardness." Daiyu said, "To my mind, the best opening line is 'Cold in the garden, the slanting sun, I recall past outings' — this line applies its powder from behind, so to speak. 'The one who set down his book faces a branch of autumn' is already marvelous beyond words; having said all there was to say about offering chrysanthemums, with nowhere left to go, it turns back to recall the time before they were unwrapped and offered — the meaning runs deep." Li Wan said with a smile, "Even so, your line about 'lips still holding fragrance' can certainly hold its own against it." Tanchun added, "In the end one must count Hengwu Jun as the most composed — 'autumn leaves no trace,' 'the dream alone knows' — she has brought out the very word 'recall' through subtle shading." Baochai said with a smile, "Your lines 'short sidelocks chilled and dampened' and 'the hemp kerchief scented and dyed' have described the wearing of chrysanthemums so completely there isn't a single seam left unaccounted for." Xiangyun said, "'With whom to retire into hiding,' 'why so late to bloom' — these truly question the chrysanthemum until it has no words left to answer." Li Wan said with a smile, "Your lines 'sitting bareheaded' and 'chanting with arms about one's knees' are so vivid that for now no one can better them — if the chrysanthemum had any awareness, it would surely grow weary of it." This set everyone laughing.:“Baoyu said with a smile, "I've failed the examination again.’,‘’,‘’,‘’,,‘’,‘’,Could it be that 'whose garden were they planted in,' 'where has autumn gone,' 'wax-clogged shoes journeying far,' 'chanting on and on in the cold' are not about visiting? Or that 'last night's rain' and 'this morning's frost' are not about planting?’,‘’,‘’,‘’,‘’,‘’,‘’,‘。”:“。”:“。”"I only regret that they cannot match lines like 'lips still holding fragrance, chanting to the moon,' 'chanting with knees embraced amid cool, pure fragrance,' 'short sidelocks,' 'hemp kerchief,' 'gold grown pale,' 'green all tattered,' 'autumn leaves no trace,' 'the dream alone knows.'" He added, "Some idle day I'll write out all twelve poems myself, alone." Li Wan said, "Yours are good too, only they don't quite match these lines for freshness and cleverness."

Everyone discussed the poems once more, then called again for hot crabs, and ate together for a while at the big round table.:“Baoyu said with a smile, "Today, holding crab claws and admiring the osmanthus, we surely cannot go without a poem.?”便"I've already composed mine — who else would still dare to write one?" So saying, he hurried to wash his hands, took up his brush, and wrote it out.Everyone looked, and it read:

Holding the crab claw, I delight all the more in the cool shade of the osmanthus; splashing on vinegar, pounding ginger, my spirits grow wild with joy.

A gluttonous young lord surely ought to have wine on hand; the sideways-scuttling young master, though, has no guts to speak of.

Cold gathers at its belly, yet greed forgets all caution; the fishy scent clings to my fingers — even washed, it stays fragrant.

They exist, after all, to please the mouths and bellies of men; the Immortal of the Slope once laughed at a lifetime spent so busy over them.

:“。”:“。”Daiyu said with a smile, "Poems like this — I could turn out a hundred of them." Baoyu said with a smile, "Now that your own talent is spent, instead of admitting you can't write one, you go running down other people's work." Hearing this, Daiyu made no reply; without even pausing to think, she took up her brush and, with a single stroke, already had a poem finished.Everyone looked, and it read:

Iron armor and long spears — even in death it has not forgotten them; piled on the plate, its fine look delights me, and I taste it first of all.

The claws seal in tender jade, filled full pair by pair; the shell bulges with red fat, fragrant piece by piece.

So much meat — I pity you all the more for your eight legs; to heighten the mood, who will urge on me a thousand cups?

Facing so fine a delicacy, I toast this fine festival — the osmanthus brushed by a clear breeze, the chrysanthemum touched with frost.

便:“Baoyu had just read it and was cheering it on when Daiyu suddenly snatched it up, tore it to pieces, and had someone burn it, saying with a smile, "Mine isn't as good as yours — I've burned it.。”:“。”"That one of yours is very good, better even than your chrysanthemum poem just now — keep it, and let others see it." Baochai then said with a smile, "I too have forced out a poem — it may not be any good, but let me write it out just for a laugh." So saying, she wrote it out as well. When everyone looked, it read:

In osmanthus mist and the shade of the parasol tree, we sit raising our cups; the mouths of Chang'an water with longing for the Double Ninth.

The road ahead has neither warp nor weft; beneath its shell lies a judgment hidden, amounting to nothing but black and yellow.

Reading this far, everyone could not help crying out in admiration.:“Baoyu said, "Written with such gusto!。”"My poem ought to be burned too." Then he read on below, where it said:

Wine alone cannot overcome the fishy taste — chrysanthemum must still be used; its nature guards against gathering cold, so ginger is surely needed.

Now that it has fallen into the pot, what good does that do? By the moonlit shore, only the fragrance of grain and millet remains.

When everyone had finished reading, they all agreed this was the supreme masterpiece on eating crabs — such small subjects truly need to carry great meaning to show real talent, only the satire on the ways of the world was perhaps a bit too biting.Even as they spoke, they saw Ping'er coming back into the garden. What she had come to do is not yet known; listen to the next chapter for the explanation.

What it’s about

The poetry club meets for its chrysanthemum gathering while crabs are steamed and wine warmed. Members draw topics that approach the flower through planting, viewing, dreaming and remembrance. Daiyu's poems win first place, especially her verses on chanting and dreaming of chrysanthemums; their lonely intensity makes inherited poetic language feel personal. Tanchun and Baochai also excel, and Baoyu performs less well. Within this temporary court, literary achievement can reverse ordinary expectations and place the orphaned, physically fragile Daiyu at the center.

After the formal judging, Baoyu proposes poems on eating crabs. His playful verse celebrates appetite, but Baochai answers with a polished satire of the crab's sideways movement, hard shell and grasping claws. Everyone praises it while recognizing that its target extends beyond the animal to arrogant, corrupt people. The feast thus moves from sensual pleasure to social criticism. Baochai, often associated with restraint and accommodation, proves capable of sharp attack when convention allows it to appear as an elegant occasional poem rather than direct accusation.

When it was written 背景

Chrysanthemums are associated with autumn, endurance and the recluse poet Tao Yuanming, making them ideal material for writers secluded in the garden. The sequence matters less as a contest with one objectively best poem than as a set of voices shaped by common forms. Daiyu's victory affirms that illness and marginal family status do not limit her authority as a poet. Crab poetry belongs to a long tradition of witty food verse; Baochai's allegory uses familiar traits of the creature to satirize human conduct safely. Readers encounter poetry here as social action: it assigns prestige, expresses temperament, strengthens friendship and voices judgments ordinary household speech would make risky.
