Lines from The Western Chamber Serve as Jests; Songs from The Peony Pavilion Stir a Maiden's Heart
The story goes that after Jia Yuanchun returned to the palace following her visit to Daguan Yuan that day, she ordered that all the poems composed on that occasion be copied out in order by Tanchun, properly and carefully; she herself then arranged them in sequence and ranked their merits, and further ordered that they be engraved on stone tablets in Daguan Yuan, to make a refined and elegant affair for all posterity. For this reason, Jia Zheng had men sent out everywhere to select skilled craftsmen of renown, to polish stones and carve characters in Daguan Yuan, while Jia Zhen led Jia Rong, Jia Ping, and others to supervise the work. Since Jia Qiang was also occupied managing Wenguan and the other eleven girl-actors along with their costumes and props, and could not spare much time, Jia Zhen therefore summoned Jia Chang and Jia Ling as well to oversee the work. One day, they began the work in earnest, melting the wax and applying the vermilion. But this need not concern us further.
Now to speak of Yuhuang Miao and Damo An: the twelve young Buddhist novices and twelve young Daoist novices had now been moved out of Daguan Yuan, and Jia Zheng was just then thinking of sending them out to various temples to be lodged separately. As it happened, Jia Qin's mother, Madam Zhou, who lived on the back street, had been scheming to get some post, big or small, from Jia Zheng's side for her son to manage, so that he might earn some money to spend; and hearing by chance that this matter had come up, she took a sedan chair over to beg a favor of Xifeng. Xifeng, seeing that she was not one who normally put on airs, agreed to help her; after thinking it over for a few words, she went to report to Lady Wang, saying, 'These little monks and Daoists must on no account be sent off elsewhere—if Her Grace should come out at any time, they will be needed to attend on her.' If they are once scattered, it would be a great deal of trouble to gather them again should they be needed.' To my mind, it would be better to send them straight to our family temple, Tiekan Si; each month it would take no more than sending one person with a few taels of silver to buy firewood and rice, and that would settle it.' Whenever they are wanted, someone need only go and fetch them—no trouble at all.' When Lady Wang heard this, she took it up with Jia Zheng. Jia Zheng, hearing this, said with a smile, 'That reminds me—yes, let it be so.' He at once sent for Jia Lian.
Just then Jia Lian was eating with Xifeng; on hearing he was summoned, not knowing what it was about, he put down his rice bowl and started off. Xifeng caught hold of him and said with a smile, 'Wait a moment—stand still and hear what I have to say.' If it's about anything else, it's none of my business, but if it's about the little monks, you must go along with what I say, whatever happens.' And she coached him in just what to say. Jia Lian said with a smile, 'I don't know anything about it—if you're so capable, go and speak for yourself.' Hearing this, Xifeng stiffened her neck, set down her chopsticks, and, with a look on her cheeks that was half a smile and half not, stared at Jia Lian and said, 'Are you in earnest, or just joking?' Jia Lian said with a smile, 'Yun'er, the son of the fifth sister-in-law from the west corridor, has come and begged me two or three times for some post to manage.' I agreed, and told him to wait.' Now that this post has finally come up, you want to snatch it away from him.' Xifeng said with a smile, 'Don't worry.' At the northeast corner of the garden, Her Grace has said that many more pine and cypress trees are to be planted, and beneath the tower some flowers and grasses are to be planted as well.' When that job comes up, I guarantee I'll have Yun'er put in charge of that project.' Jia Lian said, 'Well, if that's really so, then it's all right.' Only last night, I merely wanted to try something a little different, and you got all coy and wriggled out of it.' Hearing this, Xifeng burst out laughing, spat at Jia Lian, and lowered her head to eat.
Jia Lian, still smiling, had already gone off; when he reached the front and saw Jia Zheng, it was indeed about the matter of the little monks. Jia Lian, following Xifeng's suggestion, said, 'As I see it now, Qin'er has really turned out quite capable—this matter might as well be handed over to him to manage.' In any case, following the usual rules within, just have Qin'er draw the allowance each month.' Jia Zheng had never bothered much with such matters, and on hearing Jia Lian say this, he simply agreed. Jia Lian went back to his room and told Xifeng, and Xifeng at once sent someone to tell Madam Zhou. Jia Qin then came to see Jia Lian and his wife, thanking them over and over. Xifeng also did him the favor of pressing Jia Lian to let him draw three months' allowance in advance; she had him write out a receipt, and Jia Lian endorsed the voucher and signed it, and at once had the matching tally sent out. The silver treasury, according to the amount, issued out three months' supply—two or three hundred taels of gleaming white silver. Jia Qin casually picked up a piece and tossed it to the man in charge of the scales, telling them to buy themselves some tea. Then he had a page carry the rest home, to talk it over with his mother. At once he hired a large braying donkey and mounted it himself, and hired several carts besides; he went to the side gate of Rongguo Fu, called out the twenty-four novices, had them get into the carts, and set off straight for Tiekan Si outside the city. For the moment there is nothing more to tell of this.
Now to speak of Jia Yuanchun: after compiling the poems on Daguan Yuan in the palace, she suddenly recalled the scenery of the garden, and thought that, now she had visited it, Jia Zheng would surely have it reverently sealed and locked up, not daring to let anyone go in and disturb it—would that not leave it desolate and forlorn? Besides, there were at home a number of sisters skilled at poetry and rhapsody—why not order them to go and live there, so as not to let fair maidens languish in neglect, nor flowers and willows lose their radiance for lack of admirers? Then again she thought of Baoyu, who had grown up from childhood among his sisters and was not like the other brothers; if he were not allowed to go in as well, she feared he would feel lonely and out of sorts, which would inevitably cause Grandmother Jia and Lady Wang worry—it would be best to order him too to move into the garden to live. Having thought this through, she then ordered the eunuch Xia Shouzhong to go to Rongguo Fu and deliver an edict, ordering Baochai and the others to go ahead and live in Daguan Yuan, that it was not to be forbidden or sealed off, and ordering that Baoyu likewise be allowed to go in and study there.
Jia Zheng and Lady Wang received this edict, and after Xia Shouzhong had left, they went to report it clearly to Grandmother Jia, and sent people in to sweep and clean every part of the garden, and to set up curtains, drapes, and bed-canopies. Everyone else, on hearing this, took it more or less in stride, but Baoyu, on hearing the edict, was so delighted there was nothing he would not have agreed to. He was just then scheming with Grandmother Jia over wanting this thing and getting that one, when suddenly a maid came and said, 'The Master wants Baoyu.' At this Baoyu felt as though struck by a clap of thunder; at once his high spirits were swept away, and the color changed on his face; he clung to Grandmother Jia, twisting about like a stick of taffy candy, and would rather have died than go. Grandmother Jia had no choice but to comfort him, saying, 'There, my precious, just go along—I'm here, and he won't dare treat you unfairly.' Besides, you've written that fine composition, after all.' I imagine it's because Her Grace has ordered you to move in, and he only wants to give you a few instructions—no more than telling you not to make mischief once you're inside.' Whatever he says, you need only answer him properly, that's all.' So saying, she comforted him, and at the same time called two old nurses over, instructing them, 'Take good care of Baoyu and see he's not frightened by his father.' The old nurses assented.
Baoyu had no choice but to go, unable to move more than three inches with each step, dragging his feet along toward that side. As it happened, Jia Zheng was discussing matters in Lady Wang's room, and the maids—Jinchuan, Caiyun, Caixia, Xiuluan, Xiufeng, and the rest—were all standing beneath the eaves of the veranda; as soon as they saw Baoyu coming, they all pressed their lips together and smiled. Jinchuan caught hold of Baoyu and whispered with a smile, 'I've just put fresh rouge steeped in perfume on my lips—will you taste it now?' Caiyun pushed Jinchuan aside and said with a smile, 'The poor thing is already ill at ease, and here you are still teasing him.' Take advantage of his being in a good mood and go in quickly.' Baoyu had no choice but to edge his way in through the door. It turned out that Jia Zheng and Lady Wang were both in the inner room. Concubine Zhao lifted the portiere, and Baoyu went in with his back bent. There he saw Jia Zheng and Lady Wang sitting facing each other on the kang, talking; on the floor was a row of chairs, and Yingchun, Tanchun, Xichun, and Jia Huan, the four of them, were all sitting there. As soon as they saw him come in, only Tanchun, Xichun, and Jia Huan stood up.
As soon as Jia Zheng raised his eyes, he saw Baoyu standing before him, his bearing radiant and free, his fine looks striking to behold; then he looked at Jia Huan, mean and shabby in appearance, careless and uncouth in manner; and he suddenly thought of Jia Zhu, and then considered that Lady Wang had only this one son of her own body, whom she had always cherished as a treasure, while his own beard had already turned nearly gray. On account of these several things, the resentment and displeasure he usually felt toward Baoyu diminished, without his realizing it, by eight or nine parts. After a good while he said, 'Her Grace has instructed that, since you idle about outside day after day and are growing ever more slack, you are now to be kept under restraint, and are to study reading and writing together with your sisters in the garden.' You had better apply yourself diligently to your studies; and if you again fail to keep to your proper place and behave as you should, you had better watch out!' Baoyu answered 'Yes' several times in quick succession. Lady Wang then drew him down to sit beside her. His three siblings sat down again as before.
Lady Wang, stroking Baoyu's neck, said, 'Have you finished the pills from the other day?' Baoyu answered, 'There's still one left.' Lady Wang said, 'Tomorrow fetch ten more, and every day at bedtime have Xiren wait on you and see you take one before you sleep.' Baoyu said, 'Ever since you gave the order, madam, Xiren has remembered every night and given it to me to take.' Jia Zheng asked, 'Who is Xiren?' Lady Wang said, 'A maid.' Jia Zheng said, 'A maid may be called whatever will do—who was it that was so cunning as to give her such a name?' Seeing that Jia Zheng was displeased, Lady Wang covered for Baoyu, saying, 'It was Grandmother who gave it.' Jia Zheng said, 'How would Grandmother know of such a phrase—it must have been Baoyu.' Baoyu, seeing there was no concealing it, had no choice but to rise and answer, 'It is because in my reading of poetry I once recalled a line by an ancient poet that goes: "The scent of flowers assails men, telling that the day is warm."' And since this maid's surname is Hua, meaning "Flower," I gave her this name on the spur of the moment.' Lady Wang hastily added, 'Baoyu, go back and change it.' And you needn't be angry, sir, over such a trifling matter.' Jia Zheng said, 'It really does no harm—why should it need changing?' Only it shows that Baoyu does not attend to proper pursuits, but devotes his efforts entirely to such lush and flowery verses.' Having said this, he gave a sharp shout: 'You sinful beast, why haven't you gone out yet!' Lady Wang also said hastily, 'Go on now—I'm afraid Grandmother is waiting for you to eat.' Baoyu assented, withdrew slowly, stuck out his tongue at Jinchuan with a smile, and, taking the two nurses with him, vanished in a flash. Just as he reached the front of the passageway gate, he saw Xiren standing there leaning against the door; as soon as she saw Baoyu return safely, her face broke into smiles and she asked, 'What did he call you for?' Baoyu told her, 'It was nothing—just that he was afraid I'd make mischief once I got into the garden, so he gave me a few instructions.' As he spoke, he made his way back to Grandmother Jia and reported the whole matter to her clearly. There he found Lin Daiyu, and Baoyu asked her, 'Which place do you think is good for you to live in?' Lin Daiyu had just been turning this very matter over in her mind, and when she suddenly heard Baoyu ask her, she said with a smile, 'In my heart I've been thinking Xiaoxiang Guan would be good—I love the way those few stalks of bamboo half hide a winding balustrade; it feels quieter and more secluded than anywhere else.' Hearing this, Baoyu clapped his hands and said with a smile, 'That's exactly what I had in mind too—I meant to have you live there as well.' I'll live in Yihong Yuan myself—the two of us will be close by each other, and both places are quiet and secluded.'

Xue Baochai was to live in Hengwu Yuan, Lin Daiyu in Xiaoxiang Guan, Jia Yingchun in Zhuijin Lou, Tanchun in Qiushuang Zhai, Xichun in Liaofeng Xuan, Li Wan in Daoxiang Cun, and Baoyu in Yihong Yuan. To each place were added two old nurses and four maids, apart from each person's own wet-nurse and personal maids, who were not counted; and there were, besides, servants specially assigned to keep the place clean and in order. By the twenty-second day, they all moved in together, and at once the garden was decked out like flowers waving banners and embroidered sashes, with willows brushing in the fragrant breeze—no longer as desolate as before.

Enough of such incidental talk. Now to speak of Baoyu: ever since he had moved into the garden, he was fully content, with no other desire left to covet. Every day he did nothing but stay together with his sisters and the maids, now reading, now practicing calligraphy, now playing the zither or a game of chess, painting pictures or composing poems, and going so far as embroidering phoenixes, comparing grasses in games, pinning flowers in their hair, humming low tunes and singing softly, guessing riddles by breaking up characters, or playing finger-guessing games at wine—there was nothing he did not do, and indeed he found it all thoroughly delightful. He once wrote several poems on things as they occurred to him; though they cannot be called fine poetry, they do capture true feeling and true scenes, and a few of them are recorded here as follows:

Because of these few poems, there were at the time a certain sort of snobbish, opportunistic people who, seeing they had been written by a young master of twelve or thirteen from Rongguo Fu, copied them out and praised them everywhere; and there was also a certain sort of frivolous young fellow who, taken with their romantic and alluring lines, wrote them on fans and walls, and would recite and admire them from time to time. As a result, there were even people who came seeking his poems and calligraphy, or asking him to paint pictures or write inscriptions for them. Baoyu, for his part, grew all the more pleased with himself, and spent whole days occupied with such outside affairs.

Who would have thought that vexation would arise out of quiet—suddenly one day he grew ill at ease, finding this thing wrong and that thing wrong, going in and out only in a gloomy, listless mood. Most of the people in the garden were girls, just then in the innocent, undifferentiated world of childhood, artless and unaffected in their prime, sitting and lying about without avoidance, laughing and joking without a care—how could they know what was on Baoyu's mind at such a time? Baoyu, feeling ill at ease within, grew too listless to stay in the garden, and instead idled about outside, fooling around, yet all the while looking dazed and distracted. Seeing him like this, Mingyan wanted to cheer him up; he thought this way and that, but everything he considered was something Baoyu had already tired of and could not be cheered by—except for one thing, which Baoyu had never yet seen. Having thought of this, he went off to a bookshop and bought a great many novels both old and new, along with unofficial biographies of Feiyan, Hede, Wu Zetian, and Yang Guifei, as well as scripts of romantic plays, to entice Baoyu into reading them. Baoyu had never in his life seen such books before, and the moment he set eyes on them it was as though he had come into possession of rare treasures. Mingyan further warned him not to take them into the garden, saying, 'If anyone finds out, I'll be the one to suffer for it and won't be able to bear the consequences.' But how could Baoyu bear to leave them out of the garden? After much hesitation, he picked out just a few sets with the most refined language and subtle plots and took them in, placing them atop his bed canopy, to read secretly by himself whenever no one was about. Those that were too coarse and explicit he hid away in the outer study.
That day, right in the middle ten days of the third month, after breakfast, Baoyu took a set of Xixiang Ji and went to sit on a rock beneath the peach blossoms by the bridge at Qinfang Zha, and, opening Xixiang Ji, began to savor it carefully from the beginning. Just as he was reading the line 'fallen red forms drifts,' a gust of wind blew past, shaking down more than half the peach blossoms from the treetops, so that they fell all over his person, all over the book, and all over the ground. Baoyu wanted to shake them off, but fearing they might be trampled underfoot, he gathered the petals up in the front of his robe instead, went to the edge of the pool, and shook them out into the water. The petals floated on the surface of the water, drifting and bobbing, and eventually flowed on out through Qinfang Zha.
When he came back, he saw there were still many petals left on the ground, and while he was hesitating over what to do, he suddenly heard someone behind him say, 'What are you doing here?' Baoyu turned his head, and it was Lin Daiyu who had come, a flower-hoe over her shoulder, a silk bag hanging from the hoe, and a flower-broom in her hand. Baoyu said with a smile, 'Good, good—come and sweep up these flowers, and toss them into the water there.' I've just thrown a good many in there myself.' Lin Daiyu said, 'It's not good to throw them in the water.' You see, the water here is clean, but once it flows out, it passes places where people live, dirty and foul, and gets all mixed in with filth—so the flowers would still end up ruined.' Over there in that corner I have a flower grave; now let's sweep these up, put them into this silk bag, and bury them under the earth—in time they'll simply turn to soil along with it. Isn't that far cleaner?'
Hearing this, Baoyu was so pleased he could not help himself, and said with a smile, 'Let me put down my book and help you gather them up.' Daiyu said, 'What book is that?' At this question Baoyu, flustered, tried hastily to hide it but could not in time, and said, 'It's only the Zhongyong and the Daxue.' Daiyu said with a smile, 'You're up to your tricks with me again.' Better show it to me at once—there's plenty of time yet.' Baoyu said, 'Dear cousin, as for you, I'm not afraid to let you see it.' Only, once you've read it, whatever happens, don't tell anyone else.'真真這是好書!'It really is a wonderful book!' If you read it, you won't even want to eat.' So saying, he handed it over. Lin Daiyu set down her flower tools for the moment, took the book to look at, and read it through from the beginning; the more she read, the more she loved it, and in less time than it takes to eat a meal she had finished all sixteen scenes, feeling that its language was striking and that a lingering fragrance filled her mouth. Though she had finished the book, she still sat lost in thought, silently reciting passages to herself in her mind.
Baoyu said with a smile, 'Cousin, tell me, is it good or not?' Lin Daiyu said with a smile, 'It really is delightful.' Baoyu said with a smile, 'I am just such a "care-worn, sickly form," and you are just that "beauty to topple kingdoms and cities."' Hearing this, Daiyu, quite without meaning to, flushed crimson from cheeks to ears; at once her two eyebrows, seemingly knit yet not quite, rose straight up, and her two eyes, seemingly wide yet not quite, glared; her soft cheeks carried a touch of anger, her delicate face held back displeasure, and pointing at Baoyu she said, 'You wretch, talking such nonsense!' Perfectly well-behaved, and yet you go and get hold of these lewd words and wanton songs, and now you've even learned this kind of vulgar talk to bully me with.' I'm going to tell Uncle and Aunt." At the word "bully," her eyes had already reddened around the rims, and she turned and walked away. Baoyu, alarmed, stepped forward to block her way and said, "Dear sister, please forgive me this once — it was my fault for misspeaking. If I ever meant to bully you, then let me fall into the pond tomorrow and be swallowed up by a scabby-headed turtle, turned into a great cuckold, and when you someday become a 'Lady of the First Rank' and die of old age, I'll carry your gravestone on my back for the rest of my life." At this Lin Daiyu burst out laughing despite herself, and rubbing her eyes, said with a laugh, "Scared into that tone of voice too, and yet you go right on talking nonsense. 'Pah — a fine shoot that never flowers, a pewter spearhead got up to look like silver.'" Hearing this, Baoyu laughed and said, "And what about this saying of yours? 林黛玉笑道:“你說你會過目成誦,難道我就不能一目十行么?”I'll go tell on you too." Lin Daiyu laughed and said, "You say you can remember whatever you read at a single glance — can't I read ten lines at a glance too?"
As Baoyu gathered up the book, he said with a laugh, "Let's get down to business and bury the flowers — never mind about that." The two of them then set about gathering up the fallen blossoms, and just as they had finished burying them properly, Xiren came walking up and said, "I couldn't find you anywhere, and here you are, hiding out this way. Sir She, over on that side, isn't feeling well, and the young ladies have all gone over to pay their respects — the Old Ancestress says you're to be sent over too. Hurry back and change your clothes." Hearing this, Baoyu quickly picked up his book, took leave of Daiyu, and went back with Xiren to his room to change — no more of that for now.
Here, Lin Daiyu, seeing that Baoyu had gone, and hearing too that none of the other sisters were in their rooms, felt gloomy and out of sorts on her own. Just as she was about to return to her room, she had barely reached the corner of the wall by Pear Fragrance Court when she heard, from within the wall, the drawn-out strains of a flute and the sweet, winding notes of singing. Lin Daiyu knew at once that this was the twelve girls rehearsing their opera. Only Lin Daiyu had never much cared for watching operas, so she paid it no mind and simply walked on. By chance a couple of lines drifted to her ears, clear and distinct, not a single word lost, singing: "So the deep purples and brilliant reds all bloom, only to be given over, all of them, to broken wells and crumbling walls." Hearing this, Lin Daiyu felt a stirring of deep, lingering emotion despite herself, and she stopped in her tracks to listen closely, and then heard it sing: "Fine mornings, lovely scenes — oh, what can one do with such a sky? Pleasures of the heart, joys to delight in — in whose garden are they found?" Hearing these two lines, she could not help nodding and sighing to herself, thinking inwardly, "So it turns out there really is fine writing even in operas. What a pity that people in this world only know how to watch the show, and are not necessarily able to appreciate the flavor hidden within it." Having thought this, she then regretted having let her mind wander so, for it had made her miss part of the song. Turning her ear to listen again, she heard it sing: "All for you, my flower-fair beloved, and the years flowing away like water..." Hearing these two lines, Lin Daiyu felt her heart stirred and her spirit shaken without her realizing it. Then hearing lines such as "alone in your secluded chamber, pitying yourself," she grew even more dazed, as though drunk or entranced, and could not remain standing, so she lowered herself down and sat upon a rockery stone, savoring closely the flavor of those eight words, "a flower-fair beloved, the years flowing away like water." Suddenly she recalled too the line she had seen the other day in a poem by an ancient poet, "water flows on, flowers fall, both without feeling," and then again a line from a lyric, "flowing water, fallen blossoms, spring has gone — in heaven as on earth," and along with these, the line she had just read in The Western Chamber, "petals fall, the red washed away by flowing water, idle sorrows a myriad kinds" — all of these came to mind at once and gathered together in a single place. As she pondered them all carefully, she found her heart aching and her spirit growing numb, quite without noticing it, and tears fell from her eyes.正沒個開交,忽覺背上擊了一下,及回頭看時,原來是……Just as she found herself unable to break free of these feelings, she suddenly felt a tap on her back, and when she turned to look, it turned out to be... Listen to the next chapter to have it told.正是:Truly it is:

Yuanchun orders Baoyu and the unmarried girls to live in Grand Prospect Garden, turning the display grounds into an inhabited world. Baoyu settles happily in Happy Red Court, Daiyu in Bamboo Lodge and Baochai in Alpinia Park. His days among books and flowers seem idyllic until pages from the forbidden romance The Western Chamber captivate him. When Daiyu catches him reading, they share the play's language; his flirtatious quotation first angers her, then becomes a private literary bond after he apologizes.
Later Daiyu hears actresses rehearsing The Peony Pavilion beyond a wall. Its songs of spring, beauty and desire stop her in the path, and lines she has encountered elsewhere combine with her own loneliness until she weeps among fallen flowers. No one formally teaches the cousins what romantic feeling means. Books and performance supply words that household education withholds, allowing desire to emerge as allusion, joke and bodily shock. The garden's protective enclosure therefore creates not innocence but the conditions for a shared imaginative life.
When it was written 背景
The move into Grand Prospect Garden begins the novel's most celebrated sequence, in which the young residents briefly possess spaces, names and rhythms apart from ordinary adult management. The Western Chamber and The Peony Pavilion were famous dramas of love crossing parental arrangements; elite readers admired their artistry while often calling them unsuitable for the young. Their quotations matter as actions, not decorative references: Baoyu tries out a lover's speech, Daiyu decides whether to accept its implication, and an overheard song gives her private emotion a script. This flowering refuge is always temporary, built for imperial ceremony and shadowed by the prophecies already given.
