起死 Bringing Back the Dead

(A vast stretch of wasteland. Here and there are earthen mounds, none more than six or seven feet high. There are no trees. The ground is covered everywhere with tangled tumbleweed;amid the weeds runs a path trodden by men and horses. Not far from the path is a pool of water.。)Houses can be seen in the distance.)

——(。)Zhuangzi—(His face dark and gaunt, his full beard grizzled; wearing a Daoist cap and a cloth robe and carrying a horsewhip, he enters.) Once you set out and have no water to drink, you feel thirsty in no time.Thirst is no laughing matter; one would truly be better off turning into a butterfly.,……But there are no flowers here, either...Oh!Here is a pool—what luck, what luck!

。)(He runs to the pool, parts the duckweed, scoops up water in his hands, and drinks more than a dozen mouthfuls.) Mm, that's better.。(,)Now to take the road at my leisure. (Walking on and looking around,) Ah!A skull.?(:)How did this come about? (He stirs among the tumbleweed with his horsewhip and, tapping the skull, says:)

?(。)?(。)?(。)?(!) ?(。)……Was it because you clung to life and feared death, acted against all right and reason, and came to this? (Tap, tap.) Or did you lose your territory, fall beneath the executioner's blade, and come to this? (Tap, tap.) Or did you make a complete mess of things, fail your parents, wife, and children, and come to this? (Tap, tap.) Did you not know that suicide is the act of the weak? (Tap, tap, tap!) Or did you have no food to eat and no clothes to wear, and so come to this? (Tap, tap.) Or did you grow old, and simply deserve to die, and so come to this? (Tap, tap.) Or...Ah, now I am being foolish—as if I were acting in a play. How could it possibly answer?。(:)Fortunately, Chu is not far off now, so there is no need to hurry; I may as well ask the Great God Siming to restore his form and regrow his flesh, have a little idle chat with him, and then send him back to his native place to reunite with his family. (He lays down his horsewhip, faces east, raises his clasped hands toward heaven, and cries at the top of his voice:)

!……With utmost devotion I bow before the Great Celestial Lord Siming!...

(A chill wind rises, and a host of spirits appear: disheveled and bald, thin and fat, male and female, old and young.)

——The Spirits—Zhuang Zhou, you muddleheaded fool!Your beard has gone gray, and still you cannot see reason. In death there are no four seasons, and no masters either.Heaven and earth themselves are spring and autumn; even an emperor has no such ease.。……Leave well enough alone, and hurry on to Chu to carry out your own campaign....

——Zhuangzi—You are the muddleheaded ghosts; even in death you still cannot see reason. You must understand that life is death and death is life; the slave, too, is the master.I have penetrated to the source of life and destiny, and will not be swayed by the campaigns of you petty ghosts.

——……The Spirits—Then we shall make a fool of you here and now...

——!(:)Zhuangzi—I bear the King of Chu's imperial summons, so still less do I fear the rabble-rousing of you petty ghosts! (Again he raises his clasped hands toward heaven and cries at the top of his voice:)

With utmost devotion I bow before the Great Celestial Lord Siming!

Heaven is dark and earth is yellow; the cosmos is vast and primordial.宿The sun and moon wax and wane; the constellations spread in ordered ranks.

Zhao, Qian, Sun, Li; Zhou, Wu, Zheng, Wang.Feng, Qin, Chu, Wei; Jiang, Shen, Han, Yang.

By the command of the Most High Lord Lao, let this be carried out with all speed!Obey!Obey!Obey!

(A fresh breeze rises, and the Great God Siming appears in the eastern haze, wearing a Daoist cap and cloth robe, his face dark and gaunt, his full beard grizzled, a horsewhip in his hand.。)All the spirits vanish.)

——Siming—Zhuang Zhou, you have summoned me; what new mischief are you up to?Now that you have drunk your fill, are you growing restless?

——Zhuangzi—I am on my way to see the King of Chu, and in passing through this place I saw an empty skull that still retained the shape of a head.He must have had parents, a wife, and children; to have died here is truly, alas, a most pitiable thing.I therefore earnestly beg Your Greatness to restore his form and return his flesh, bringing him back to life so that he may go home.

——Siming—Ha ha!You do not truly mean that either; your belly is not yet full, and already you are looking for idle business. You are not quite serious, yet not quite playing, either.Go on your way and stop bothering me.”,便You should know that “life and death are ordained by fate”; even I cannot readily arrange them as I please.

——Zhuangzi—Your Greatness is mistaken. In truth, where are life and death to be found?I, Zhuang Zhou, once dreamed I had become a butterfly—a butterfly drifting lightly about; then I awoke and became Zhuang Zhou—a Zhuang Zhou bustling busily about.Whether it was Zhuang Zhou who dreamed he became a butterfly, or the butterfly that dreamed it became Zhuang Zhou, I have still not managed to determine.Viewed in this light, how can we know that this skull is not alive at present, and that after being so-called restored to life he would not instead be dead?便便Please, Your Greatness, act as you please and bend the rules a little.A man should be flexible; a god need not be pedantic, either.

——(,)……Siming—(Smiling,) You, too, can only talk and cannot act: you are a man, not a god...Very well, then; I shall let you try.

(Siming points his horsewhip into the tumbleweed. At the same moment, he vanishes.。)A flash of fire bursts from the spot he indicated, and a man leaps to his feet.)

——(The Man—(About thirty years old, tall and strongly built, with a ruddy face like a countryman's, and stark naked from head to foot.,)After rubbing his eyes vigorously with his fists, he collects himself and, seeing Zhuangzi,) Huh?

——?(,)Zhuangzi—Huh? (He approaches with a smile and looks the man over.) What happened to you?

——The Man—Ah, ah, I fell asleep.?(,)?(,)?(。)What happened to you? (He looks to either side and cries out.) Oh! Where are my bundle and umbrella? (He looks down at himself.) Oh, oh! Where are my clothes? (He crouches down.)

——Zhuangzi—Calm yourself; do not panic. You have only just come back to life.西As for your belongings, I expect they rotted away long ago, or else someone picked them up.

——The Man—What are you talking about?

——Zhuangzi—First let me ask you: what is your surname and given name, and where are you from?

——The Man—I am Yang Da, from Yang Family Village. My formal name is Bigong.

——Zhuangzi—Then what did you come here to do?

——。(,)The Man—I was going to visit relatives, but unexpectedly fell asleep here. (Growing anxious,) Where are my clothes?Where are my bundle and umbrella?

————Zhuangzi—Calm yourself; do not panic—first let me ask you: what age are you from?

——(,)?……The Man—(Astonished,) What?...”?……What do you mean, “what age are you from”?...Where are my clothes?

……...

————Zhuangzi—Tsk, tsk, you are a hopelessly muddleheaded fellow—concerned with nothing but your own clothes, a thoroughgoing egoist indeed. You have not even made sense of this “man” that you are; how can we begin to speak of your clothes? That is why I must first ask you: what age are you from?。……Ah, ah, you do not understand....,(,)Well then, (after thinking for a moment,) let me ask you this: when you were alive before, what events took place in your village?

——The Man—Events? There were some.Yesterday, Second Sister-in-law Ah had a quarrel with Seventh Great-aunt.

——Zhuangzi—Nothing bigger?

——?……The Man—Nothing bigger?...……Well, Yang Xiaosan was officially commended as a filial son...

——……Zhuangzi—The official commendation of a filial son certainly is a major event...……(,)使But it would still be very difficult to trace... (After thinking for a moment,) Was there no still greater event that caused everyone to be thrown into an uproar?

——?……(,)The Man—An uproar?... (Thinking,) Oh, yes, yes!鹿……That was three or four months ago: they were going to seize the children's souls to lay beneath the foundations of Lutai, and everyone was so terrified that the whole place was thrown into pandemonium; they hurried to make amulet pouches for the children to wear...

——(,)鹿Zhuangzi—(Startled,) Lutai?鹿When was this Lutai built?

The Man—The Lutai whose construction began just three or four months ago.

——Zhuangzi—Then you died in the time of King Zhou? This is truly extraordinary—you have been dead for more than five hundred years.

——(,)The Man—(Growing somewhat angry,) Sir, you and I have only just met; please do not make jokes.I merely slept here for a little while—what do you mean, dead for more than five hundred years?I have serious business to attend to: I am going to visit relatives.Give me back my clothes, bundle, and umbrella at once.I have no time to joke with you.

——Zhuangzi—Steady, steady; let me investigate this first. How did you fall asleep?

——?(,)The Man—How did I fall asleep? (Thinking,) I reached this place this morning, and it seemed there was a crash above my head; everything went black before my eyes, and I fell asleep.

——Zhuangzi—Did it hurt?

——The Man—I do not think it did.

——……(,)……Zhuangzi—Oh... (After thinking for a moment,) Oh...I understand. It must be that, in the time of King Zhou of the Shang dynasty, you came to this place alone and encountered highway robbers, who struck you from behind with a cudgel, killed you, and stole everything you had.We are now in the Zhou dynasty; more than five hundred years have passed, so where could you possibly look for your clothes?Do you understand now?

——(,)MAN — (glaring, looking at Zhuangzi) I don't understand a bit of this.Sir, you'd best stop this nonsense and give me back my clothes, my bundle, and my umbrella.I have proper business — I'm going to visit relatives — I've no time to play games with you!

——……ZHUANGZI — You really are a man who doesn't understand reason...

——MAN — Who doesn't understand reason? My things are missing, and I caught you red-handed — if I don't ask you for them, who should I ask? (Standing up.)

——(,)ZHUANGZI — (anxiously) Just listen to me a moment more: you were originally a skull. I took pity on you and asked the Great God Who Controls Fate to bring you back to life.Just think about it: you've been dead all these years — how could there still be any clothes left?……I'm not even asking for your thanks now — just sit down, and let's talk about the time of King Zhou...

——MAN — Nonsense!Even a three-year-old child wouldn't believe a story like that.!(,)……And I'm thirty-three years old! (Walking off) You...

——ZHUANGZI — But I really do have this power. You must know of Zhuang Zhou of Qiyuan.

——MAN — I don't know him.Even if you really do have this power, what good is it, damn it?You've left me stark naked — what use is it to be brought back to life? How am I supposed to go visit my relatives now?……(,)And my bundle is gone too... (on the verge of tears, running over to grab Zhuangzi's sleeve) I don't believe your nonsense. There's no one here but you, so of course I'm asking you for it!I'll drag you off to the constable!

——ZHUANGZI — Slowly, slowly — my robe is old and worn, it's frail, it can't take pulling.Just listen to a few words from me: don't fix your mind on clothes alone — clothes are a thing one may or may not have. Perhaps having clothes is right, and perhaps not having clothes is right.Birds have feathers, beasts have fur, and yet melons and eggplants are stark naked.”,?……This is what's called "that too is a right and wrong, and this too is a right and wrong." You certainly cannot say that having no clothes is right, but then again, how can you say that having clothes is right either?...

——(,)MAN — (angrily) Cut the crap! If you don't give my things back, I'll beat you to death first! (Clenching one hand into a fist and raising it, grabbing at Zhuangzi with the other.)

——(,)ZHUANGZI — (flustered, fending him off) How dare you get rough!Let go!Or else I'll ask the Great God Who Controls Fate to give you back your death!

——(退,)MAN — (retreating with a cold laugh) Fine, give me back my death then.……Otherwise, I want you to give back my clothes, my umbrella, and my bundle — inside which were fifty-two round coins, a catty and a half of white sugar, two catties of southern jujubes...

——(,)ZHUANGZI — (sternly) You won't go back on this?

——MAN — Only a bastard would go back on his word!

——(,)ZHUANGZI — (resolutely) Then so be it.。(:)Since you're being so muddle-headed about it, I'd best send you back to your original state. (Turning to face east, cupping his hands toward the sky, raising his voice, and crying out loudly:)

With utmost sincerity I pay homage — Great Heavenly Venerable Who Controls Fate!

Supreme Lord Lao!Decreed!Decreed!!……Decreed!...Decreed!

。)(No effect whatsoever. A good while passes.)

——MAN — Am I dead yet or not?

——(,)……ZHUANGZI — (dejectedly) I don't know why, but it's not working this time...

——(,)MAN — (lunging forward) Well then, stop talking nonsense.Pay me back for my clothes!

ZHUANGZI — (backing away) How dare you lay hands on me?You brute who understands nothing of philosophy!

——(,)MAN — (grabbing hold of him) You thieving bones! You bandit of a strategist!……I'll strip off your robe first and take your horse to pay me back...

(While struggling to hold him off, Zhuangzi hurriedly fishes a police whistle out of his robe sleeve and blows it wildly three times. The man is startled and slows his movements.。)Before long, a patrolman comes running from the distance.)

——(,)PATROLMAN — (running and shouting as he comes) Hold him down!!(。)Don't let him go! (As he runs closer, he turns out to be a big fellow from the state of Lu, tall and sturdy, in uniform and cap, holding a baton, with a ruddy face and no beard.) Hold him down!!……This bastard!...

——(,)MAN — (gripping Zhuangzi tighter again) Hold him down!!……This bastard!...

(The patrolman arrives, grabs Zhuangzi by the collar, and raises his baton with the other hand.。)The man lets go, bends slightly at the waist, and covers his belly with both hands.)

——(,)ZHUANGZI — (holding back the baton, tilting his head) What is the meaning of this?

——PATROLMAN — What is the meaning of this?Humph!Don't you know yourself?

——(,)ZHUANGZI — (angrily) I called you here, and instead you go and grab me?

——PATROLMAN — What?

——……ZHUANGZI — I blew the whistle...

——PATROLMAN — You robbed a man of his clothes, and then blow the whistle yourself — you idiot!

ZHUANGZI — I was just passing by, saw him lying dead here, and saved him — and instead he clings to me, claiming I took his things.西Just look at me — do I look like someone who robs people of their belongings?

——(,)“”,PATROLMAN — (lowering the baton) "One may know a man's face but not his heart" — who's to say.Let's go down to the station.

——ZHUANGZI — That won't do at all.I must be on my way — I'm going to see the King of Chu.

——(,)……PATROLMAN — (startled, releasing his grip, looking closely at Zhuangzi's face) Then you must be... Qi—

——(,)ZHUANGZI — (brightening) That's right!I am indeed Zhuang Zhou, the official of Qiyuan. How did you know?

——PATROLMAN — Our chief has been mentioning you often these past few days, saying you were off to seek your fortune in the state of Chu, and might well be passing through here.便使》,”,Our chief is himself a recluse of sorts, who handles a bit of official business on the side. He's very fond of reading your writings — the "Discourse on the Equality of Things," with its "no sooner born than dying, no sooner dying than born, no sooner right than wrong, no sooner wrong than right" — truly written with force, truly a first-rate piece of writing, truly excellent!。 You really ought to come to our station and rest a while. (The man, startled, retreats into the weeds and crouches down.)

——ZHUANGZI — It's already getting late today — I must hurry on my way and can't afford to delay.I'll pay my respects to your esteemed chief when I come back this way.

(Zhuangzi, talking as he moves, climbs onto his horse and is about to whip it on, when the man suddenly leaps out of the weeds, runs up, and grabs the horse's bit.。)The patrolman chases after him too and grabs the man by the arm.)

——ZHUANGZI — What more are you pestering me about?

——?(,)MAN — If you leave, I'll have nothing at all — what am I supposed to do? (Looking at the patrolman) Look here, Mr. Patrolman—

……...

——(,)……PATROLMAN — (scratching behind his ear) This is truly a tricky business...……But, sir...,(,)……The way I see it, (looking at Zhuangzi) since you're better off, perhaps you could spare him a garment, just enough to cover his shame...

——ZHUANGZI — That can certainly be done — these clothes were never mine to begin with.穿穿……But this time I'm going to see the King of Chu, so going without my robe won't do, and taking off my undershirt to wear only the robe won't do either...

——。(,)PATROLMAN — Quite right, that's indispensable indeed. (To the man) Let go!

——PATROLMAN — Goodbye, goodbye.Safe travels to you, sir!

。)(The man suddenly leaps out from the weeds and grabs the hem of the patrolman's uniform.)

——PATROLMAN — How should I know that.

——Patrolman: Then go and visit them.

——Fellow: But I have no clothes.

——Patrolman: Can't you visit relatives without clothes?

——Fellow: You let him get away. Now you're trying to slip off too, so I've no choice but to come to you for a solution. If I don't ask you, then who should I ask?Look at me — how am I supposed to go on living like this!

——Patrolman: But let me tell you: suicide is the act of the weak!

——Fellow: Then you find me a way out!

——(,)Fellow: (clutching the patrolman's sleeve,) Then take me to the station!

——(,)Patrolman: (shaking free his sleeve,) How could that be done.Stark naked — how could you walk down the street.Let go!

——Fellow: Then lend me a pair of trousers!

——。(,)Patrolman: I have only this one pair of trousers; if I lend them to you, I'll be in no fit state myself. (struggling with all his might,) Don't make trouble!Let go!

——(,)Fellow: (seizing the patrolman by the neck,) I simply must go with you!

——(,)Patrolman: (flustered and desperate,) It can't be done!

——Fellow: Then I won't let you go!

——Patrolman: What is it you want, then?

——Fellow: I want you to take me to the station!

——……Patrolman: This really is……What use would it be to take you there?Stop making trouble.Let go!……(。)Otherwise…… (struggling with all his might.)

——(,)Fellow: (gripping tighter still,) Otherwise, I can't visit my relatives, and I can't go on being a person either.……Two catties of southern jujubes, a catty and a half of white sugar…………You let him get away — I'll fight you to the death……

——(,)Patrolman: (struggling,) Stop making trouble!Let me go!……Otherwise…………(。)Otherwise…… (so saying, he fumbles out his whistle and blows on it wildly.)

What it’s about

The one piece of theatre in Lu Xun's fiction: a one-act farce with stage directions, played on a stretch of waste ground with low mounds, tangled weeds and a puddle. 莊子, thirsty on the road to see the king of 楚, drinks from the puddle, finds a skull in the grass and taps it with his horsewhip, asking whether it came to this through greed, or through losing its territory, or through letting its family down, and reminding it that suicide is the act of a weakling. Then, since 楚 is not far and he has time, he calls up 司命大神 to put flesh back on the thing and send it home to its relatives. A crowd of ghosts tells him to stop meddling and get on with his career; the god tells him this is not sincerity, it is a man who has drunk his fill and is looking for something to do, and obliges anyway.

What stands up out of the weeds is a large, sunburnt, entirely naked labourer: 楊大 of 楊家莊, school name 必恭, thirty-three, who was knocked on the head on his way to visit relatives and believes he has been asleep for an hour. He was killed while the 鹿台 was being built, five hundred years ago, and he wants his clothes, his umbrella and his bundle — fifty-two coins, a catty and a half of white sugar, two catties of red dates. 莊子 offers him the doctrine that this is one right and wrong and that is another, that birds have feathers and beasts have fur but cucumbers and aubergines go naked; the man takes hold of his sleeve. The spell to send him back fails, twice. So the philosopher blows a police whistle, and the constable who runs up is about to march him off until he hears the name 漆園吏莊周, whose 齊物論 the station chief admires very much. 莊子 rides away to court, declining to hand over so much as a shirt. The naked man is left holding the constable, who tells him that suicide is the act of a weakling and, when that does not work, blows his own whistle. Curtain.

When it was written 背景

Dated December 1935, the last thing written for the book and the piece that ends it, days before Lu Xun dated the preface the 26th and sent the manuscript off. The joke is built on a real passage of 莊子, the skull in 至樂 that is offered its life back and declines it, turned inside out so that the dead man does come back and wants his trousers. Everything modern in it — the police whistle, the constable, the slogan about suicide being weakness that was being aimed at the young in the Shanghai papers that year — is doing the same work. For a learner the form is a gift: it is all dialogue with the speaker named in front of each line, the labourer's Chinese is as plain as anything in the corpus, and the stage directions are short. The cost is that half of 莊子's lines are 莊子 quoting himself, and the relativism has to be recognised before it can be enjoyed.
