補天 Mending Heaven

Nüwa suddenly woke up.

She seemed to have been startled awake from a dream, yet she could no longer remember what she had dreamed;she only felt very vexed, sensing that something was lacking, and yet also that something was too much.A stirring, gentle breeze, warm and mild, blew her strength till it filled the whole universe.

She rubbed her eyes.

便In the pink sky, many winding streaks of malachite-green clouds drifted, and behind them stars blinked, now bright, now dim.At the edge of the sky, within blood-red clouds, there was a radiant sun, like a molten golden ball wrapped in the lava of primeval antiquity;on the other side, though, was a moon cold and white as pig iron.Yet she paid no attention to which was going down and which was coming up.

The earth had all turned tender green; even the pines and cypresses, which do not shed their leaves readily, looked exceptionally delicate.

Peach-pink and bluish-white blossoms, huge as pecks, were still distinct close at hand, but in the distance became a mottled haze.

Ah, ah, I have never been so bored before!" she thought, and suddenly stood up, raising those wonderfully round and vigor-brimming arms, and stretched a yawn toward the sky, whereupon the sky suddenly lost its color, turning into a strange flesh-pink, so that for a time one could no longer make out where she stood.

She walked to the seashore amid this flesh-pink heaven and earth, the curves of her whole body dissolving into a sea of pale rose-colored light, until only at the center of her body did it thicken into a stretch of pure white. The waves, as if in astonishment, rose and fell in orderly rhythm, yet the spray splashed against her body.仿This pure white shadow swayed in the seawater, as if her whole form were bursting apart in all directions.便西But she herself did not notice this; she simply, without knowing why, knelt on one knee, reached out and scooped up a handful of wet soft mud, and after kneading it a few times, found in her two hands a little thing much like herself.

!”西"Ah, ah!" She certainly took it to be something she herself had made, yet she also suspected that the thing had, like a sweet potato, originally been in the earth, and she could not help feeling very astonished.使……Yet this astonishment made her glad, and with an unprecedented boldness and delight she went on with her work, breathing and blowing, sweat mingling in...

“Nga!nga!”西"Nga! Nga!" the little things cried out.

“Nga!nga!”

Ah, ah!" She was startled again, feeling that from every pore of her body something was flying and scattering, so that the ground became covered with milk-white mist and cloud; only then did she steady herself, and the little things too fell silent.

“AkonAgon,!”西"Akon Agon!" some of the things said to her.

“AkonAgon,!”

。”"Ah, ah, dear little darlings." She gazed steadily at them, and stretched out her mud-covered fingers to poke their plump white faces.

“UvuAhaha,!”"Uvu Ahaha!" they laughed. This was the first laughter she had ever seen in heaven and earth, and so she too, for the first time, laughed till she could not close her lips.

“UvuAhaha,!”

She fondled them with one hand while still making more with the other; those she had made circled about her, but gradually they wandered farther off and talked more and more, until she could no longer understand them, feeling only that her ears were full of a noisy clamor, a clamor that made her rather dizzy.

In her long joy she had already grown weary.便Her breath was nearly spent, her sweat nearly all shed, and besides she was dizzy; her eyes grew blurred, her cheeks gradually grew hot, and she began to feel it no longer mattered, and grew impatient.Yet still she did not stop her hands, and unconsciously went on making.

At last the aching soreness of her waist and legs made her stand up, and she leaned against a rather smooth high mountain; looking up, she saw the whole sky covered with fish-scale white clouds, and below, a dense, dark green mass. She herself did not know why, but felt that nothing around her was to her liking, and so, in irritation, she stretched out her hand and, on a whim, pulled up a wisteria vine that grew from the mountain all the way to the edge of the sky, its clusters just then blooming with indescribably large purple flowers; with one sweep of her arm the vine lay stretched across the ground, scattering petals half purple, half white, all over the earth.便西She then gave her hand another shake, and the wisteria turned over once in the mud and water, splashing up mud mixed with water at the same time; by the time it fell to the ground, it had become many little things like those she had made before, only most of them looked dull-witted, with the mean, shifty look of a rat, rather disagreeable.便But she had no time to attend to such things; she only found it amusing and yet vexing, and mixed with mischief she simply swung her hand round and round, faster and faster, so that the vine, trailing mud and water, rolled along the ground like a red-banded snake scalded by boiling water. Drops of mud sprayed off the vine like a rainstorm, turning into wailing little things even while still in the air, and they crawled about, scattered all over the ground.

She was nearly in a daze, and swung all the more, but not only did her waist and legs ache, her arms too grew weak, and so, without meaning to, she crouched down, resting her head against the high mountain, her hair, black as lacquer, draped over the mountaintop; after panting a while, she sighed, and her eyes closed. The wisteria fell from her hand, and, as if utterly exhausted too, lay sprawled languidly on the ground.

!!!Boom!!!

Amid this sound of heaven collapsing and earth crumbling, Nüwa woke with a start, and at the same instant slid straight down toward the southeast. She stretched out her foot to find footing, but there was nothing to tread on; hastily she flung out an arm and grabbed hold of a mountain peak, and only then did she stop sliding further down.

But then she felt water and sand and stone rolling and splashing from behind, over her head and around her body; the moment she turned her head, she got a mouthful of water and two earfuls besides, and she quickly lowered her head, only to see the ground shaking without pause.Fortunately, the shaking too seemed to quiet down; she shifted backward, settled herself firmly, and only then freed a hand to wipe the water from her forehead and the corners of her eyes, and looked closely to see what was happening.

The situation was quite unclear; everywhere the ground was covered with cascading water;it was probably the sea, for in several places sharp waves rose up.She could only wait there blankly.

But at last it grew calm; the great waves rose no higher than the mountains had been before, and where it seemed to be dry land, jagged rocky bones showed through.Just as she was looking out over the sea, she saw several mountains come rushing along in the current, spinning round and round amid the piled-up waves.便西Fearing that the mountains might strike her feet, she reached out her hand and scooped them up together; looking into the mountain hollows, she saw many things she had never seen before, crouching there.

She drew her hand back, pulling the mountains close to look carefully, and saw that the ground beside those things was messily fouled with vomit, apparently powder of gold and jade, mixed with chewed-up pine and cypress leaves and fish flesh.便西They too slowly, one after another, raised their heads; Nüwa opened her eyes wide, and only after a good while realized that these were the little things she had made before, only now, oddly enough, they had all wrapped their bodies in something, and several even had snow-white fuzz growing on the lower halves of their faces, though the seawater had plastered it flat like a pointed poplar leaf.

!”"Ah, ah!" she cried in astonishment and fear, her skin breaking out in goosebumps, as if she had touched a hairy caterpillar.

……”,“……"Most High, save us..." one whose lower face was covered in white fuzz raised his head, and, retching as he spoke, said brokenly, "Save us...……Your subjects...are students of immortality.。……Who could have expected that calamity would come, that heaven and earth would split apart...……Now, fortunately...,……we have met the Most High...,……pray save these ants' lives...……and bestow upon us the immortal...……”the elixir of immortality..." and thereupon he began raising and lowering his head in strange gestures.,“?”She was utterly bewildered, and could only say again, "What?" Many among them then also began to speak, likewise retching while crying out "Most High, Most High," and then all making the same strange gestures.Their clamor vexed her, and she rather regretted that pull of hers, which had brought on this baffling trouble. At a loss what to do, she looked around and saw a group of giant sea turtles playing on the surface of the sea; she could not help being overjoyed, and at once set the mountains on their backs, telling them, "Carry these off for me to somewhere steadier!" The giant turtles seemed to nod, and in a group carried them far away.便But because she had pulled too roughly before, one of the white-fuzzed-faced ones had fallen off the mountain, and now, unable to catch up, and not knowing how to swim, he lay prostrate at the sea's edge, slapping his own face.使This did make Nüwa feel some pity, yet she paid it no heed, for she truly had no time to spare for such matters.

She let out a breath, feeling somewhat more at ease, and turned her gaze back to look about her; the floodwater had already receded considerably, and broad stretches of earth and stone showed everywhere, with many things wedged in the crevices of the rocks — some lying stiff and straight, others still moving. She caught sight of one staring blankly at her with the whites of his eyes showing;his whole body was largely wrapped in sheets of iron, and the expression on his face seemed one of great disappointment and fear.

?”便"Now what is the meaning of that?" she asked, casually.

。”便,“,……”"Alas, Heaven has sent down ruin." The man spoke in a mournful and pitiful voice. "Zhuanxu was without the Way, and defied our sovereign; our sovereign in person carried out Heaven's punishment, and did battle in the outskirts, but Heaven did not favor virtue, and our army was routed and fled..."

?”"What?" She had never in her life heard such talk, and was greatly astonished.

"Our army was routed and fled, and thereupon our sovereign struck Mount Buzhou with his own head, breaking the Pillar of Heaven and severing the Cord of Earth, and our sovereign too perished.……”Alas, this was truly..."

。”"Enough, enough, I don't understand what you mean." She turned her face away, only to see another face, cheerful and proud, likewise with his whole body largely wrapped in sheets of iron.

?”西"Now what is the meaning of that?" Only now did she realize that these little things could put on such different sorts of faces, and so she hoped to draw out some other, more comprehensible answer.

。”"The hearts of men are no longer what they were of old; Kanghui indeed had the heart of a swine, and coveted the throne of Heaven; our sovereign in person carried out Heaven's punishment, and did battle in the outskirts; Heaven truly favored virtue, and our army was invincible in battle, and we put Kanghui to death at Mount Buzhou."

?”"What?" It seemed she still did not understand.

,……”"The hearts of men are no longer what they were of old..."

!”西"Enough, enough, the same stuff again!" She was so angry that her cheeks flushed red clear to her ears, and she swiftly turned her head away to look elsewhere, until at last she caught sight of one thing not wrapped in iron sheets, its body bare, still bleeding from its wounds, only with a scrap of torn cloth wound about its waist.西He was just then untying that torn cloth from the waist of another thing lying stiff and straight, and hastily binding it about his own waist, though his expression remained quite unruffled.

She guessed that he was of a different sort from those wrapped in iron sheets, and that she might now be able to get some sense out of him, so she asked:

?”"Now what is the meaning of that?"

。”"Now what is the meaning of that, indeed." He raised his head slightly and said.

?……”"That commotion just now — what was it?..."

?”"That commotion just now?"

?”"It was a war, wasn't it?" Having no other recourse, she was left to guess for herself.

?”"A war, was it?" But he too merely asked it back.

Nüwa drew a sharp breath, and at the same time lifted her face to look at the sky. There was a great crack in the sky, very deep and very wide. She stood up and flicked it with her fingernail; it gave no clear ring at all, sounding almost exactly like a cracked bowl.便Frowning, she looked all about her, and after thinking a while, wrung the water from her hair and parted it over her two shoulders, then roused her spirits to gather reeds from every quarter: she had already resolved on the plan of "mending it, and worrying about the rest later."

From then on she piled up reeds day and night, and however high the woodpile grew, she herself grew that much thinner, for things were not as they had been before — overhead a crooked, cracked sky, underfoot a filthy, broken earth, with nothing left anywhere to delight the eye.

Only when the reed-pile reached up to the crack did she go to search for bluish stone. At first she had meant to use pure blue-green stone that matched the color of the sky, but there was not enough of it on earth, and she could not bear to use whole great mountains; sometimes she went to the bustling places to search for scraps, but those who saw her would sneer coldly, curse her bitterly, or snatch the pieces back, and some even bit her hand. So she had no choice but to mix in some white stones, and when that still was not enough, to add some red-yellow and gray-black ones as well; in the end she managed, after a fashion, to fill up the crack, and now only needed to set it alight, melt it down, and the work would be done — yet by now she was so exhausted that her eyes swam and her ears rang, and she could hold out no longer.

。”"Ah, ah, I have never been so weary as this before." She sat on a mountaintop,

holding her head in both hands, saying this between gasping breaths.

At this time the great fire in the ancient forest on Mount Kunlun had not yet gone out, and the whole western sky was aglow red.西西She glanced west, and resolved to fetch a great burning tree from there to light the reed-pile; just as she was reaching out her hand, she felt something pricking at her toe.

She glanced down to look, and as usual it was one of the little things she had made before, only stranger still — hung all over with cluster upon cluster of something like cloth, with a dozen or so extra strips of cloth draped about its waist, and something unknown covering its head, atop which was a small, black, oblong plank; in its hand it held a thin object, and it was this that had been pricking her toe.

The one wearing the oblong plank stood right between Nüwa's legs, looking up, and when it saw her glance down at it, hastily held the little slip up to her.She took it and looked, and found it a very smooth strip of green bamboo, with two rows of tiny black dots on it, much smaller than the black spots on an oak leaf. She could not help admiring the delicate skill of the workmanship.

?”"What is this?" Still unable to resist her curiosity, she could not help asking again.

便,“The one wearing the oblong plank pointed at the bamboo strip and recited fluently, as if by rote, "To go naked is lewd and dissolute, a loss of virtue, a contempt of ritual, a violation of decorum — it is the conduct of beasts.!”The state has its established punishments; this is forbidden!"

Nüwa glared at the little oblong plank, and inwardly laughed at herself for having asked so absurd a question; she had already known that talking with this sort of thing was, as a rule, hopeless, and so said nothing more, but set the bamboo strip back on the plank atop its head, and turning, drew a great burning tree from the fiery forest, meaning to go set the reed-pile alight.

Suddenly she heard a sound of low sobbing, and this too was a thing never before heard; she glanced down once more, and saw beneath the plank two tiny eyes brimming with tears smaller than mustard seeds.“nganga”This was so different from the "nga-nga" crying she had grown used to hearing before, that she did not even realize this too was a kind of weeping.

She went and set the fire alight, and in more than one place too.

The flames were not fierce, for the reeds were not thoroughly dry, but they crackled all the same,

便and after a very long while, countless tongues of flame at last shot out, licking upward with a flicker and a withdraw, and after a long while more, they merged into a many-tiered flower of flame, and then into a pillar of flame, blazing so brilliantly as to overwhelm the red glow above Mount Kunlun.A great wind suddenly arose, and the pillar of fire whirled and roared; the blue-green and multicolored stones all turned one uniform red, flowing like malt sugar in among the crack, like an unquenchable bolt of lightning.

Wind and fire swept her hair into a wild, whirling scatter, sweat poured down like a waterfall, and the great blaze set off her body in relief, making the universe show forth its last flesh-pink glow.

The pillar of fire gradually rose, leaving behind only a heap of reed ash.She waited until the sky was all one shade of blue-green, and only then reached out to touch it, but her fingertips still felt it was rather uneven.

。……”"Once I've recovered my strength, I'll come back to it..." she thought to herself.

She then bent down to gather up the reed ash, handful by handful filling it into the great waters on the ground; the ash had not yet cooled through, and it steamed, making the water seethe and boil, splashing the ashy water all over her body.使The great wind still would not cease, and blew the ash against her, until she took on the color of ash and dust.

!……”"Whew!..." She breathed out her last breath.

In the blood-red clouds at the edge of the sky was a radiant sun, like a flowing golden ball wrapped in primeval molten lava;On the other side, however, was a moon cold and white as pig iron. But no one knew which one was sinking and which was rising.便At this moment she, who had exhausted her own body with all her own strength, lay down between them, and breathed no more.

Above and below, in all four directions, was a silence beyond even death.

III

One day, when the weather was bitterly cold, a bit of clamor was suddenly heard — it was the Imperial Guard finally arriving to attack, for they had waited until they could no longer see fire or smoke before setting out, and so had come late. With a yellow battle-axe on their left, a black battle-axe on their right, and an enormous, ancient standard behind them, they crept and dodged their way to the side of Nüwa's corpse, yet found no sign of any movement. So they pitched their camp on the corpse's belly, for this spot was the most fertile, and they were very shrewd in choosing such things.”。Yet they suddenly changed their tune, declaring that they alone were Nüwa's true descendants, and at the same time changed the tadpole-script characters on the great standard to read: "The Bowels of the Lady Nüwa."

The old Daoist priest who had landed on the seashore had also passed his teachings down through countless generations.便Only when he was dying did he at last pass on to his disciple the vital news that the immortal mountains had been carried out to sea on the backs of giant sea turtles; the disciple passed it on in turn to his own disciple, and later a certain alchemist, hoping to curry favor, went so far as to report it to Qin Shi Huang, who then sent the alchemist off to search for them.

The alchemist could not find the immortal mountains, and Qin Shi Huang eventually died;Han Wudi then ordered another search, and likewise there was no trace of them to be found.

It seems the giant turtles had never actually understood Nüwa's words at all; at the time they had merely nodded by chance coincidence.便After carrying the mountains blindly along for a stretch, they all wandered off to sleep, and the immortal mountains sank right along with them; and so, to this very day, no one has ever laid eyes on so much as half of an immortal mountain — at most, people have merely come across a few savage islands.

What it’s about

女媧 wakes from a dream she cannot remember, feeling that something is missing and something else is too much, stretches until the sky loses its colour and turns flesh-pink, and walks down to a sea that ripples in orderly astonishment around her. Out of sheer boredom she kneels, scoops up a handful of wet mud and kneads it into a small thing shaped like herself. It says Nga! nga! and she is delighted; she keeps making them until her arms give out, then tears up a wisteria vine in her irritation and whips it through the mud so the flying drops turn into more small things, bawling and crawling about, most of them dull-witted and mean-looking. She falls asleep against a mountain.

A crash wakes her: the sky has split. Among the wreckage the small things have acquired clothes and beards and opinions. Taoist immortality-seekers vomit powdered jade and beg her for elixir until she loads their mountains onto passing giant turtles; two men encased in iron plates deliver flatly contradictory archaic communiqués about whose side heaven was on in the war that broke the pillar of the sky, neither of which she understands; and a creature in a small black tablet-shaped cap stands between her legs, hands her a bamboo slip and recites a statute against public nakedness. She patches the crack with reeds and coloured stones — pure blue-green stone runs short, so white and red and grey go in too — burns a great column of fire to melt them together, fills the flood with reed ash, and dies of exhaustion in the same red light the story opened in. Then the imperial guard arrives, camps on the fattest part of her corpse, and announces that they alone are her lineal descendants; and centuries later 秦始皇 and 漢武帝 send magicians out to find the immortal mountains the turtles nodded at but never carried anywhere.

When it was written 背景

The oldest thing in the book, dated November 1922, printed that winter as 不周山, appended to 吶喊 and then cut from that book's second printing after 成仿吾 praised it at every other story's expense. It came back in 1935 retitled 補天 and placed first, and the preface makes it the origin of the collection's 油滑: the little moralist between 女媧's legs was written in anger at a newspaper review. For a learner it is the most beautiful and least approachable piece here — a creation told almost wholly in colour and motion, with 伊 rather than 她 for she, page-long paragraphs of pink sky and green cloud, and then two stretches of deliberately opaque archaic Chinese that 女媧 herself cannot follow. Come to it after 奔月 or 非攻, and do not be alarmed when the dialogue stops making sense: that is the joke.
