The Hundred-Eyed Demon Lord Poisons the Monks

073Chapter 73

西The story goes that Sun the Great Sage supported Tang Sanzang, and together with Bajie and Sha Monk they hurried onto the high road, heading straight west.殿Before half a day had passed, they suddenly saw a place of tiered towers and pavilions, with palace halls rising majestically.:「?」Tang Sanzang reined in his horse and said, "Disciple, what place do you suppose that is?" Wukong raised his head to look, and suddenly saw:

:「Wukong reported, "Master, that place is neither the mansion of a prince or marquis, nor the home of some wealthy family — it looks rather like a Daoist convent or monastery.。」Once we get there we'll know for certain." Hearing this, Sanzang whipped his horse onward.Master and disciples came before the gate and looked, and saw a stone tablet set into the gate, on which were the three characters "Yellow Flower Abbey."Sanzang dismounted.:「。」:「Bajie said, "Yellow Flower Abbey is the home of Daoist priests — it wouldn't hurt for us to go in and pay a visit. Though their robes and caps differ from ours, cultivation is cultivation, the same for all." Sha Monk said, "Well said.First we can go in and take in the scenery, and second we can let the horse rest and graze a bit.便。」If we find it convenient, we can also arrange some vegetarian food for the Master to eat."

The elder agreed, and the four of them went in together.:「On the inner gate they saw a pair of spring couplets: "Yellow sprout and white snow — the mansion of immortals;。」:「。」:「Jade grass and jasper blossoms — the home of feathered masters." Wukong laughed and said, "This must be some priest who burns thatch to refine elixirs, tends the furnace fire, and fusses over crucibles." Sanzang pinched him and said, "Mind your words, mind your words.?」殿We are not acquainted with him, nor are we kin — we'll just pay a brief visit and be on our way; why concern yourself with him?" Before he had finished speaking, they entered the inner gate, and saw that the main hall was tightly shut, while under the east corridor sat a Daoist priest rolling pills.See how he was dressed:

:「。」:「When Sanzang saw him, he called out in a loud voice, "Old Immortal, this poor monk offers his greetings." The Daoist looked up with a start, and at the sight of him his heart leapt in fright; he dropped the medicine in his hands, straightened his hairpin, adjusted his robes, and came down the steps to greet him, saying, "Venerable Master, forgive me for failing to welcome you properly.。」殿Please, come inside and sit." The elder happily went up into the hall.He pushed open the door and saw the sacred images of the Three Purities, with an incense burner and incense on the offering table. He at once took incense and set it in the burner, bowed three times in reverence, and only then exchanged greetings with the Daoist. Then they went to the guest quarters and sat down together with the disciples. The priest hastily called for the immortal boys to bring tea. There were two young page-boys who at once went inside to find the tea tray, wash the tea cups, wipe the tea spoons, and prepare fruit for the tea, bustling about busily — and this soon alarmed those several enemies of ours.

It turned out that the seven female demons of Pansi Cave had studied their arts together with this Daoist, as fellow disciples of the same hall.穿Ever since putting on their old clothes and calling out their son, they had come straight to this place. :「?」:「。」:「?」:「。」:「。」They were in the back just then cutting and sewing clothes, when they suddenly saw the page-boy fetching tea, and asked, "Boy, what guests have come that you're in such a busy fluster?" The immortal boy said, "Just now four monks came in, and Master told us to bring tea." The female demon asked, "Is there a fat, pale-faced monk among them?" He said, "There is." She asked again, "Is there one with a long snout and big ears?" He said, "There is." The female demon said, "Go quickly and serve the tea, then give your master a look, a signal, and get him to come in — I have something urgent to tell him." Sure enough, the immortal boy took the five cups of tea out, and the Daoist, gathering his robes, took one cup in both hands and handed it to Sanzang, and then to Bajie, Sha Monk, and Wukong in turn. When the tea was finished, the cups were collected.:「。」:「The page-boy gave a signal with his eyes, and the Daoist rose slightly and said, "Gentlemen, please be seated." He instructed, "Boy, set down the tea tray and attend our guests.。」殿Wait while I go and come right back." At this time the elder and his disciples, along with one page-boy, went out to view the sights about the hall — but we need not speak further of that.

:「。」:「Now to tell of the Daoist: he walked into his private chamber, where he saw the seven women all kneeling together at once, crying, "Elder Brother, Elder Brother, hear your little sisters out." The Daoist raised them up with his hands and said, "This morning when you came you wanted to tell me something, but as it happened I was rolling pills today, and this particular medicine must not be seen by yin-natured persons, so I did not answer you then.。」:「And now there are guests outside as well — whatever you have to say can wait a while." The demons said, "We tell you truly, Elder Brother: this matter concerns precisely these guests, and that is exactly why we dare to speak of it now;。」:「if the guests leave, then even if we told you, it would be of no use." The Daoist laughed and said, "Listen to you, worthy sister — how can something concern only the guests, that you must speak of it only now?Isn't that madness?Setting aside that I am one who cultivates immortality in pure quietude — even in an ordinary household, with a wife and children and family affairs, one would wait until the guests had gone before attending to them. Why are you being so unreasonable, making a spectacle for me like this?。」:「Let me go back out." The demons again pulled him back together and said, "Elder Brother, calm your anger.?」Let me ask you, where did that guest out front come from?" The Daoist scowled and did not answer.:「。」:「便?」:「?」:「The demons said, "Just now when the page-boy came in for tea, we heard him say there are four monks." The Daoist said angrily, "So what if they're monks?" The demons said, "Among the four monks, one is fat and pale-faced, and one has a long snout and big ears — Elder Brother, did you happen to ask where they came from?" The Daoist said, "Among them there are indeed these two — how did you know that??」I suppose you must have seen him somewhere before?"

:「The woman said, "Elder Brother, you truly don't know the ins and outs of this matter.西That monk is one sent by the Tang court to fetch scriptures from the Western Heaven.。」:「?」:「This morning he came to our cave to beg for food, and it was indeed because your sisters heard the name 'Tang Monk' that we seized him." The Daoist said, "Why did you seize him?" The woman said, "We have long heard people say that the Tang Monk is a true body who has cultivated through ten lifetimes, and that whoever eats a piece of his flesh will gain long life and immortality — that is why we seized him.Afterward that monk with the long snout and big ears trapped us in the Filth-Cleansing Spring, first seizing our clothes, then showing off his skills, forcibly insisting on bathing together with us, and we could not stop him.He then jumped into the water and turned into a catfish, wriggling in and out between our legs, meaning to carry out some lewd, deceitful scheme — truly he was thoroughly shameless. He then jumped back out of the water and showed his true form.使Seeing that we would not submit to him, he then took up a nine-toothed rake, meaning to take our lives.Had we not had some presence of mind, we would nearly have suffered at his vicious hands, and so, trembling with fear, we fled to save our lives. We also sent your foolish nephew to fight him, and do not know whether he lives or has perished.。」:「We have come especially to seek refuge with you, Elder Brother, hoping that in memory of our old days as fellow students you will avenge this wrong for us today." When the Daoist heard these words, he grew angry, and his voice and expression changed at once, saying, "So this monk is this rude, this shameless!。」:「。」:「All of you set your hearts at ease — let me deal with him." The women thanked him, saying, "If Elder Brother is going to act, let us all come and help you beat him." The Daoist said, "No need to fight him, no need to fight.:『。』。」As the saying goes, 'To strike is to lower oneself by three parts.' All of you follow me."

The women followed him closely on either side.He went into his room, took a ladder, went around behind the bed, climbed up onto the roof beam, and brought down a small leather box. That box was about eight inches high, one foot long, and four inches wide, locked shut with a small bronze lock. From his sleeve he then took out a square of goose-yellow silk handkerchief, on the fringe of which was tied a small key.He opened the lock and took out a packet of medicine. This medicine was:

:「The Daoist said to the seven women, "Sisters, this treasure of mine — if given to an ordinary mortal to eat, a mere one part in a thousand will kill him the moment it enters his belly;if given to an immortal to eat, even three parts in ten thousand will finish him off;as for these monks, I fear they may have some measure of spiritual attainment, so we'll need three parts in a thousand.。」:「。」Quickly, fetch the scale." One of the women hurriedly fetched a small scale and said, "Weigh out one fen and two li, divided into four portions." She then took twelve red jujubes, pinched each open a little, stuffed a li of the powder into each, and divided them among four tea cups;:「便then she put two black jujubes into one more tea cup, and set them all on a tray, and said to the assembled women, "Wait while I go ask him — if they are not from the Tang court, then let the matter drop;but if they are indeed from the Tang court, I will have the tea changed, and you are to have the page-boy carry this tea out.。」Once they've drunk it, every one of them will die, and thus your vengeance will be avenged for you, and your troubles resolved." The seven women were endlessly grateful.

:「The Daoist then changed into another robe, and with false courtesy and humility walked back out, inviting Tang Sanzang and the others again to sit in the guest hall, saying, "Venerable Master, please do not take offense.。」:「?」:「Just now I went to the back to instruct my young disciples to pick some greens and radishes and prepare a vegetarian meal to offer you, and that is why I neglected you." Sanzang said, "This poor monk has come to pay respects empty-handed — how would I dare trouble you to provide a meal?" The Daoist laughed and said, "You and I are both men who have left the household life — the moment one sees a temple gate, there are already three pecks of official grain awaiting him; why speak of coming empty-handed?May I ask, Venerable Master, from which precious mountain do you hail??」:「西And what is your purpose in coming here?" Sanzang said, "This poor monk is one sent by the Great Tang of the Eastern Land, under imperial decree, to the Great Thunderclap Monastery in the Western Heaven to fetch scriptures.。」 :「。」:「。」We happened to pass by your immortal palace just now, and came in with utmost sincerity to pay our respects." Hearing this, the Daoist's face bloomed with spring-like delight, and he said, "So the Venerable Master is a Buddha of loyal sincerity and great virtue — this humble Daoist did not know, and failed to welcome you from afar; forgive me, forgive me." He called out, "Boy, quickly go change the tea, and get the meal prepared at once on one side." The little page-boy went inside, and the women beckoned him over and said, "Here is some good tea already prepared — take it out." The boy indeed brought out the five cups of tea.The Daoist hastily took up, in both hands, the tea cup with the red jujubes, and offered it to Tang Sanzang.Seeing that Bajie's build was large, he took him for the eldest disciple;he took Sha Monk for the second disciple;and seeing that Wukong was small in stature, he took him for the third disciple. And so it was only the fourth cup that was offered to Wukong.

Wukong's eyes were sharp, and as he took the tea cup he had already noticed that the cup left on the tray held two black jujubes.:「穿。」:「He said, "Sir, let me trade cups with you." The Daoist laughed and said, "I won't hide it from you, Elder — this humble Daoist, living out here in the wilds, was unprepared with tea fruit on the spur of the moment; just now I went to the back myself to hunt for fruit, and found only these twelve red jujubes, which I used to make four cups of tea to offer you in respect. This humble Daoist could hardly sit by without a cup of my own to keep you company, so I put two lesser jujubes together to make one cup to accompany you.。」:「This is simply this humble Daoist's token of respect." Wukong laughed and said, "What kind of talk is that?:『As the ancients said, 'Is one who stays at home ever truly poor?。』It's poverty on the road that kills a man.' You are one who keeps a settled home here — how can you speak of poverty! It is we, traveling monks on foot, who know true poverty.Let me trade with you.。」:「?」Let me trade with you." Hearing this, Sanzang said, "Wukong, this immortal elder truly means it out of hospitality toward his guest — just drink it, why must you trade?" Wukong had no choice; he took the cup with his left hand, covered it with his right, and watched the others.

Now, Bajie, being both hungry and thirsty, and having always had an enormous appetite, saw that his cup held three red jujubes, picked it up, and gulped them all down into his belly at once. The Master drank his too, and Sha Monk drank his as well.滿In an instant, Bajie's face was seen to change color, Sha Monk's eyes streamed with tears, and foam came from Tang Sanzang's mouth.None of them could remain seated, and they fell to the ground in a faint.

The Great Sage knew at once that it was poison; he raised the tea cup in his hand and hurled it straight at the Daoist's face. The Daoist blocked it with his robe sleeve, and with a clang the cup shattered into pieces.:「The Daoist said angrily, "You monk, how utterly boorish!?」:「Why did you smash my cup?" Wukong cursed, "You beast!Look at what's become of my three companions there!?」:「?」:「?」:「What quarrel do I have with you, that you should poison my people's tea?" The Daoist said, "You uncouth beast, you've brought this disaster on yourselves — don't you know it?" Wukong said, "We only just entered your gate, took our seats in order, and exchanged a few words about our origins — we never spoke a single word out of place. What disaster could we have brought on?" The Daoist said, "Did you not beg for food at Pansi Cave??」:「Did you not bathe at the Filth-Cleansing Spring?" Wukong said, "The Filth-Cleansing Spring belongs to seven female demons — since you bring this up yourself, you must certainly be in illicit league with them, and must certainly be a demon yourself.。」Don't run — take a blow from my staff." Splendid Great Sage — he reached into his ear and drew out the gold-banded staff, gave it a shake until it was as thick as a rice bowl, and swung it straight at the Daoist's face;the Daoist hastily twisted aside to dodge it, and drew a precious sword to meet him.

The two of them cursed and fought each other, and this soon alarmed the female demons within.:「。」The seven of them rushed out together, calling, "Elder Brother, do not trouble yourself further — let your little sisters catch him." Seeing this, Wukong grew all the angrier, and wielding the iron staff with both hands, he unleashed his full technique, charging in among them, striking wildly. Then the seven of them threw open their robes, thrust out their snow-white bellies, and from their navels sent forth their arts: gurgling ropes of silk came pouring out in torrents, spreading up into a canopy of heaven that covered Wukong beneath it.Seeing the situation was not going well, Wukong at once somersaulted, reciting a spell, and with a burst broke through the canopy of silk and got away. Suppressing his temper, he stood brooding in the air and looked down, and saw the demons' silken ropes gleaming and flashing, threading back and forth like the warp and weft of a loom — in a moment's time, the towers and halls of Yellow Flower Abbey were all hidden from view, without a trace.:「Wukong said, "Fierce, truly fierce.Lucky that I never fell into their hands. No wonder Zhu Bajie took so many tumbles before. What am I to do in a situation like this?My master and my fellow disciples have now been poisoned as well.。」This band of demons acts with one heart and one mind, yet I don't know their origin or background — let me go question the local god of the soil again."

Splendid Great Sage — he brought his cloud down, formed a mudra with his fingers, and recited the sacred word "Om," and once more summoned the old god of the soil.:「?」:「Trembling, the god knelt by the roadside and kowtowed, saying, "Great Sage, you went to save your master — why have you come back again?" Wukong said, "Earlier I saved my master, and not far ahead we came upon a Yellow Flower Abbey. My master and I went in to look around, and the master of the abbey came out to greet us.Just as we were exchanging pleasantries, he poisoned my master and the others with drugged tea.使Fortunately I had not drunk the tea, and I struck at him at once with my staff. He then spoke of the begging for food at Pansi Cave and the bathing at the Filth-Cleansing Spring, and I knew at once that the fellow was a demon.Just as I raised my hand to fight him, the seven women came running out, spitting forth silken ropes, and old Sun, fortunately having some presence of mind, managed to get away.I think that since you are the local deity here, you must surely know their origin — what manner of demon spirits are they?。」:「Tell me honestly, and I'll spare you a beating." The local god kowtowed and said, "Those demons have not been in this place even ten years. It was only three years ago, when this lowly god made an inspection, that I saw their true forms — they are seven spider spirits.。」:「The silken ropes they spew forth are spider silk." Hearing this, Wukong was greatly delighted and said, "By what you say, then, this is a small matter.。」Since that's so, go on back, and let me work my magic to subdue them." The local god kowtowed and departed.

:「!」Wukong then went outside Yellow Flower Abbey, plucked seventy hairs from his tail, blew a breath of immortal breath on them, and called, "Change!" — and they at once turned into seventy little Wukongs;:「!」then he blew a breath of immortal breath on the gold-banded staff and called, "Change!" — and it at once turned into seventy-one double-pronged forked staffs.使He gave each little Xingzhe a fork, and used one himself; standing outside, they twisted the silk ropes with the forks, all exerting their strength together, and at a shout, they twisted all the silk ropes until they broke, each one winding up more than ten catties' worth. From inside they dragged out seven spiders, their bodies fully as large as winnowing baskets.:「。」Each one huddled with hands and feet drawn in, head bound tight, crying only, "Spare our lives, spare our lives!" At this time the seventy little Xingzhe held the seven spiders pinned down, and would not let them go for anything.:「。」:「。」:「。」:「。」Xingzhe said, "Don't beat them yet — just have them give back my master and my junior brothers." The demons cried out shrilly, "Elder brother, give Tang Seng back to them, and save my life!" The Daoist came running out from inside and said, "Little sister, I mean to eat Tang Seng — I cannot save you." Hearing this, Xingzhe was greatly enraged and said, "Since you will not return my master, then look at what becomes of your little sister." The great Sage shook the fork-staff once, turned it back into an iron rod, raised it in both hands, and beat all seven spider spirits to a pulp.

Then he shook his tail twice more, withdrew the hairs, and alone, wielding his rod, charged inside to strike the Daoist.Seeing that Xingzhe had killed his junior sisters, the Daoist could not bear it in his heart, and at once, filled with fury, raised his sword to meet him.忿In this battle each harbored fury, and each displayed his full divine powers. What a fierce fight this was:

The Daoist and the Great Sage fought for fifty or sixty rounds, until gradually he felt his hand weakening.便In a moment his joints grew slack, so he loosened his robe's sash, and with a sudden rasping sound, stripped off his black robe.:「。」Xingzhe laughed and said, "My child, if you can't beat someone, stripping off your clothes won't help either."

It turned out that when the Daoist stripped off his clothes and raised both arms together, one could see that under his two armpits there were a thousand eyes, and from these eyes burst golden light, extremely fierce:

Xingzhe panicked, and could only spin about wildly within the shadow of the golden light — unable to step forward, unable to move his feet backward — just as though he were spinning around inside a barrel.Helpless and unable to bear the burning heat any longer, he grew desperate and leapt hard upward, only to crash through the golden light, and fell with a thud, tumbling head over heels, feeling that the collision had made his head ache.He hastily reached up to feel his head, and found that the skin on the crown of his skull had been knocked soft.:「Anxious in his heart, he said to himself, "Bad luck, bad luck! This head of mine is done for today.Usually neither sword-slashes nor axe-blows can harm it — so how has this golden light knocked the flesh soft? Before long it's bound to fester and ooze pus.。」:「退Even if it heals, it will surely turn to tetanus." For a while the burning heat was unbearable, and then he reasoned with himself again: "I can't go forward, I can't retreat, I can't go left, I can't go right, and I can't ram my way upward either — what am I to do?。」I'll just go downward, damn it."

The great Sage recited a spell, shook himself, and transformed into a pangolin, also called the "scaly anteater."Truly it was:

Just watch him — hardening his head, he burrowed straight into the ground, and bored through more than twenty li before finally poking his head out.It turned out that the golden light covered only some ten-odd li.Once out, he resumed his true form; his strength was spent, his sinews numb, his whole body ached, and he could not stop the tears flowing from his eyes.:「Suddenly he cried out involuntarily, "Master, ah—

Just as the Handsome Monkey King was overcome with grief, he suddenly heard someone weeping behind the hill; he at once raised himself up, wiped away his tears, and turned to look. He saw a woman dressed in heavy mourning clothes, holding in her left hand a bowl of cold rice-water offering, and in her right hand several sheets of paper money for burning, coming from that direction, weeping with every step.:「:『。』Xingzhe nodded and sighed, "Truly it is: 'Tearful eyes meet tearful eyes, a heartbroken soul meets a heartbroken soul.' I wonder what this woman is weeping for.。」Let me ask her." Before long the woman walked up and came face to face with Xingzhe.:「?」:「竿。」Xingzhe bowed and asked, "Bodhisattva lady, for whom are you weeping?" The woman, tears welling, said, "My husband got into an argument with the master of Yellow Flower Abbey over buying bamboo poles, and was poisoned to death by him with drugged tea. I am burning this paper money to repay the bond of husband and wife." Hearing this, tears fell from Xingzhe's eyes.:「?」Seeing this, the woman grew angry and said, "How ignorant you are! I grieve and sorrow for my husband — why do you show tearful eyes and a mournful brow, mocking me with false feeling?"

:「Xingzhe bowed and said, "Bodhisattva lady, calm your anger.I am originally the senior disciple of Tang Sanzang, the imperially commissioned royal brother-monk sent from the Great Tang in the Land of the East — Sun Wukong Xingzhe.西On our journey to the Western Heaven, we passed by the Yellow Flower Abbey to rest our horse. The Daoist in that abbey, I don't know what kind of demon he is, has bound himself as sworn brother and sisters with seven spider spirits. The spider spirits tried to harm my master at Pansi Cave, and it was I, together with my fellow disciples Bajie and Sha Seng, who rescued him and won free. Those spider spirits fled to this place and, twisting the truth, claimed that we had intended to deceive them. The Daoist used poisoned tea to drug my master and my two fellow disciples — three men in all, plus the horse, four in number — and trapped them in his abbey.Only I did not drink his tea; I smashed the teacup, and thereupon he fought with me.使Just as we were quarreling, the seven spider spirits ran out and spat forth silk ropes, netting me fast, and it was by my magic power that I broke free.I questioned the local earth god, who told me their true forms.使Then I used the body-division technique to twist through the silk ropes entirely, dragged the demons out, and beat them to death with my rod.The Daoist thereupon sought to avenge them, raising his precious sword to fight with me.We fought through sixty rounds; he lost ground in the battle, then stripped off his clothes, and from beneath his two ribs released a thousand eyes, sending forth ten thousand rays of golden light that enveloped and trapped me.退Thus caught between advance and retreat, I had no choice but to change into a scaly pangolin and burrow my way out from underground.Just as I was grieving to myself, I suddenly heard you weeping, and so I came to ask.。」Seeing that you have this paper money to repay your husband, while my master may have lost his life and I have nothing at all with which to repay him, I grieved and resented my fate — how would I dare mock you?"

:「The woman set down the rice-water offering and the paper money, and apologized to Xingzhe, saying, "Forgive me, forgive me — I did not know you were one who has suffered misfortune. From what you have just told me, you do not recognize what that Daoist truly is.He is in truth the Demon Lord of a Hundred Eyes, also called the Many-Eyed Fiend.Since you have such powers of transformation, and escaped the golden light and fought so long, you must surely possess great divine powers — yet still you cannot get close to that fiend.。」:「I will tell you to go and invite a certain sage, who can break the golden light and subdue the Daoist." Hearing this, Xingzhe hastily bowed with hands folded and said, "Bodhisattva lady, since you know this background, please be so kind as to instruct me.。」:「。」:「?」:「If indeed there is such a sage, I will go and beg for help, to save my master from this disaster, and thereby also avenge your husband." The woman said, "I will tell you now — you may go and invite this one to subdue the Daoist, but that can only avenge your husband; I fear it cannot save your master." Xingzhe said, "Why can it not save him?" The woman said, "That fiend's poison is most vicious: once it fells a person, within three days his very marrow rots away.。」:「。」:「If you go there and come back, I fear it will be too late, and so it cannot save him." Xingzhe said, "I know how to travel — no matter how far it is, it will take me no more than half a day." The woman said, "Since you know how to travel, listen to me: from here to that place is a thousand li away.Over that way there is a mountain called Purple Cloud Mountain.。」:「On that mountain there is a cave called Thousand Flowers Cave, and in that cave dwells a sage called Pilan Po, who can subdue this monster." Xingzhe said, "In which direction does that mountain lie??」:「便。」And from which direction should I go?" The woman pointed with her hand and said, "Straight to the south is where it lies." When Xingzhe turned his head to look again, the woman had already vanished.:「Xingzhe hastily bowed in worship and said, "Which Bodhisattva might this be?。」:「。」I, your disciple, have been so dazed from burrowing that I could not recognize you — I beg you a thousand times to leave your name, so that I may give thanks." Just then a voice called out from midair, "Great Sage, it is I." Xingzhe hastily raised his head to look, and it was none other than Old Mother Lishan.:「?」:「He rushed up into the air to thank her, saying, "Old Mother, from where have you come to instruct me?" The Old Mother said, "I have just returned from the Dragon Flower Assembly, and seeing that your master was in trouble, I disguised myself as a mourning widow, borrowing the pretext of a husband's death, to spare him from death.。」Go quickly and invite that sage, but you must not reveal that it was I who instructed you — that sage tends to take offense at people rather easily."

Xingzhe gave his thanks, took his leave, sprang onto his cloud-somersault, and at once arrived atop Purple Cloud Mountain. He brought his cloud down to a stop, and there before him he saw the Thousand Flowers Cave.Outside that cave:

The great Sage walked in joyfully, and at every step, every turn, there was scenery boundless and inexhaustible to behold.Going straight inside, there was not a single person to be found; all was silent and still, without even the sound of a chicken or dog.:「。」In his heart he thought secretly, "This sage must not be at home." Going in several more li, he saw a woman Daoist priestess sitting upon a couch.Just see what she looked like:

:「。」:「Xingzhe could not help but step forward, and drawing near he called out, "Bodhisattva Pilan Po, greetings." The Bodhisattva at once rose from the couch, pressed her palms together, and returned the greeting, saying, "Great Sage, forgive me for failing to welcome you properly.?」:「?」:「?」:「:『。』?」:「Where have you come from?" Xingzhe said, "How is it that you recognize me as the Great Sage at once?" Pilan Po said, "In the year you wreaked great havoc in Heaven, your image spread throughout the whole earth — who does not know it, who does not recognize it?" Xingzhe said, "Just as the saying goes: 'Good deeds do not go beyond the door, but ill deeds travel a thousand li.' Now that I have turned to the true faith of Buddhism, is it that you don't know of this?" Pilan said, "When did you turn to the true faith?。」:「西Congratulations, congratulations." Xingzhe said, "Recently I was able to escape with my life, and now I protect my master Tang Seng on his journey west to fetch the scriptures. My master encountered the Daoist of Yellow Flower Abbey, who drugged him with poisoned tea.使I fought that fiend, and he released a golden light that enveloped and trapped me, and it was by using my divine powers that I broke free.。」:「Hearing that you, Bodhisattva, can extinguish his golden light, I have come especially to beg your help." The Bodhisattva said, "Who told you this?Since I attended the Ullambana Assembly, it has been over three hundred years, and I have not once stepped outside my door.?」:「。」:「I have hidden my name and concealed myself, and not a single person knows of me — so how do you come to know?" Xingzhe said, "I'm a ghost of the earth, so to speak — no matter where it is, I always find my way to discover it myself." Pilan said, "Very well, very well.。」I ought not to go, but since the Great Sage has condescended to come here in person, I cannot let it destroy the good work of seeking the scriptures — I will go with you."

:「Xingzhe gave his thanks and said, "I have been too ignorant, presuming to urge you on without proper courtesy.?」:「。」:「。」:「But I do not know what weapon you have brought with you?" The Bodhisattva said, "I have an embroidery needle, which can defeat that fiend." Xingzhe could not help saying, "The Old Mother misled me then — had I known it was only an embroidery needle, there would have been no need to trouble you; old Monkey here could have supplied a whole load of them himself." Pilan said, "Those embroidery needles of yours are nothing but ordinary needles of steel, iron, or gold — they would be of no use.。」:「?」:「。」This treasure of mine is neither steel, nor iron, nor gold, but was forged within the eye of the sun by my son." Xingzhe said, "Who is your son?" Pilan said, "My son is the Star Lord Mao Ri." Xingzhe was greatly astonished.:「便。」Presently they saw the golden light shining brilliantly in the distance, and Xingzhe at once turned to Pilan and said, "Where that golden light is — that is the Yellow Flower Abbey." Pilan then drew from within her collar an embroidery needle, as thick as an eyebrow hair and five or six fen in length, held it pinched between her fingers, and cast it up into the air.In a moment, there came a sound, and the golden light was broken.:「Xingzhe cried out joyfully, "Bodhisattva, wonderful, wonderful!。」:「?」Let us find the needle, find the needle." Pilan held it out on her palm and said, "Isn't this it?" Xingzhe then brought the cloud down together with her, and walking into the abbey, saw that the Daoist had his eyes shut tight and could not so much as lift his feet.:「。」Xingzhe cursed, "You wretched fiend, pretending to be blind!" and drew his rod from his ear to strike him at once.:「。」Pilan grabbed hold of him and said, "Great Sage, do not strike him — go first and see to your master."

Xingzhe went straight to the guest room at the rear, and when he looked, all three of them were lying on the ground, spitting up phlegm and foam.:「Xingzhe wept, saying, "What shall I do now??」:「What shall I do now?" Pilan said, "Great Sage, do not grieve.Since I have made this journey out of my door today, I might as well store up some hidden merit.。」I have here an antidote pill; let me give you three of them." Xingzhe turned and bowed to beg for them. The Bodhisattva took from her sleeve a worn paper packet, and from within it handed Xingzhe three red pills, telling him to place them in their mouths.Xingzhe pried open each of their jaws with the medicine, and stuffed one pill into each man's mouth.便In a moment, once the medicine's taste reached their bellies, all three of them retched together, and thus vomited out the poison, and their lives were saved.:「。」:「。」:「Bajie was the first to scramble up, saying, "I was nearly smothered to death!" Sanzang and Sha Seng both awoke, saying, "What dizziness that was!" Xingzhe said, "You were all poisoned by that tea.。」Thankfully Bodhisattva Pilan came to our rescue — quickly, all of you come and bow in thanks." Sanzang raised himself, straightened his robe, and gave his thanks.

:「Bajie said, "Elder brother, where is that Daoist??」Let me ask him just why he harmed me so." Xingzhe then related the whole affair of the spider spirits from beginning to end.:「。」 :「Bajie said furiously, "Since this fellow made himself sworn kin with the spiders, he must surely be a demon." Xingzhe pointed and said, "He is standing outside that hall, pretending to be blind." Bajie seized his rake and was about to strike, when again Pilan stopped him, saying, "Tianpeng, calm your anger.。」:「The Great Sage knows my cave has no one to tend it — let me take him back to keep watch over my gate." Xingzhe said, "Grateful for your great virtue, how could I not comply?。」:「。」Only let him show his true form, so that we may see it." Pilan said, "Easily done." She stepped forward at once and pointed with her hand, and the Daoist fell with a thud into the dust, revealing his true form — a great centipede spirit some seven feet in length.使Pilan lifted him up with her little finger, mounted an auspicious cloud, and returned straight to the Thousand Flowers Cave.

:「?」:「Bajie fell back in astonishment and said, "That old woman is truly formidable — how could she subdue such a vicious creature?" Xingzhe laughed and said, "I asked her what weapon she had to break his golden light, and she said she had an embroidery needle, forged by her son within the eye of the sun.And when I asked who her son was, she said it was the Star Lord Mao Ri.I think that the Star of Mao Ri is a rooster, so this old woman must surely be a hen.。」A chicken is best able to subdue a centipede, and that is why she was able to overcome him."

Hearing this, Sanzang bowed down in endless veneration.:「。」He said, "Disciples, let us pack up and be on our way." Sha Seng then went inside and found some rice and grain, prepared a vegetarian meal, and all of them ate their fill. They led the horse and shouldered the carrying-pole, and invited the master out through the gate.Xingzhe set a fire from the kitchen, and in an instant burned the whole abbey to ashes, and then they strode off on their long journey.Truly it was:

What matters lay ahead on their journey is not yet known; listen to the next chapter for the explanation.

What it’s about

At Yellow-Flower Abbey, the seven spider spirits tell their Daoist brother, the Hundred-Eyed Demon Lord, what the pilgrims have done. He welcomes Sanzang and serves poisoned tea. Sanzang, Bajie and Sha Wujing collapse, but Wukong detects the plot and challenges the host. The spiders join the fight and are killed; their brother then opens his robe and sends brilliant rays from the many eyes on his body, trapping Wukong inside a field of golden light.

Unable to break the radiance by force, Wukong receives guidance to seek the immortal Pilanpo. She comes with an embroidery needle forged through celestial discipline and uses it to pierce the demon's dazzling defense. The Daoist is revealed as a many-legged centipede and is taken away to guard her dwelling. The poisoned pilgrims recover, and the party leaves the abbey after a victory supplied by an obscure female adept rather than one of the familiar heavenly armies.

When it was written 背景

Sight is the chapter's governing danger. Wukong's fire-eyes expose poisoned hospitality, yet the centipede's multiplied eyes produce so much light that perception itself becomes imprisonment. Pilanpo's tiny needle answers spectacle with concentration: a domestic implement, empowered by disciplined practice, defeats a body built around excessive vision. The episode also refuses to make religious appearance trustworthy, since an elegant Daoist host is kin to the spiders and uses tea as a weapon. Learners can follow the sequence 飲茶, 中毒, 放光 and 收伏 to see deception become bodily crisis and then technical cure.
