The Mosquitoes Are Busy

Her daughter has come!Wang Po's daughter has come!

Wang Po can once again hold her fishing rod and sit by the river's edge! The wrinkles on her face had neither increased nor diminished, which proved that she herself remained unchanged, that she must still go on living.

In the evening the frogs' croaking deafened the ears along the river.Mosquitoes set out from the grass along the riverbank, and their humming, clamorous ranks spread mist-like over every household.By day the sun grew scorching too!The sun burned into people's skin, and in summer the folk of the farmstead resented the sun as they would resent some vicious tyrant.Over the whole field a great fireball rolled.

But Wang Po always welcomed summer. For summer brought fat green leaves, lush gardens, and summer nights that used to stir the poetry in Wang Po's heart, so that she would begin telling stories to the summer night. This summer she said nothing at all!She leaned against the window as though asleep, facing the deep, dim sky.

The frogs' cries shattered everyone's loneliness;the mosquitoes' harassment would not let up.

This same ordinary June was once again the season of last year's wheat harvest.Wang Po's family had not planted any fields this year. She had grown more sorrowful and silent! When, carrying her fishing pole, she passed by the wheat fields rippling like waves, she wound up the line at the tip of the rod, raised her head, gazed at the high sky, and passed through the wheat fields paying it no heed at all.

Wang Po's temper grew worse still! She took to heavy drinking again. She went fishing every day. She did not mend or wash the family's clothes; every night she only cooked fish and drank wine, and once drunk to madness she would go reeling all through the yard and the house;gradually she took to reeling off into the woods.

Sometimes, over her wine cup, she would think of her former husband;it grieved her to see the lonely daughter come to her side, and in any case, after drinking she was all the more given to brooding.

Now she had become almost laughable, sunk in the middle of the yard like a stone, and at night she had grown used to sleeping out in the yard.

Sleeping in the yard she was swarmed about by mosquitoes, just like a colony of ants dragging at an already rotting fly.She truly had no heart left for anything, it seemed! No heart left for living at all!

Wang Po, bitten all over by mosquitoes, had her whole face come up in blotches like clouds, her skin swollen.

Over her wine cup Wang Po also recalled the day her daughter first came, the daughter lying across Wang Po's lap:

"Mama!I thought you were dead!!……White foam was coming from your mouth, and your fingers were all cold!……!……Brother is dead, mother is dead too, where am I to go begging for food to eat!…………When they drove me out, they even forgot the bundle I'd brought with me, I cried…………cried myself faint…………」Mama, they are cruel-hearted, they wouldn't let me look at you a moment longer……"

Later, when the child rose up from her mother's lap, she said something even more full of meaning:

"I hate them to death!。」If Brother were alive, I would surely tell Brother to beat them to death."

At the last, the girl, wiping her tears dry, said:

,……」"I am bound to be like Brother,……"

Having said this she bit her lip.

Wang Po pondered how the girl could be so fierce-spirited?Or perhaps she was a child capable of something?

Wang Po suddenly stopped her heavy drinking, and every night she began, in the woods, to instruct her daughter; in the quiet forest she said sternly:

"You must take revenge.?」You must avenge your brother — who killed your brother?"

:「。」The girl thought: "It was the authorities who killed Brother." And then she heard her mother say:

,……」"Whoever killed your brother, you must kill them,……"

After the girl had thought it over for some ten-odd days, she said to her mother, hesitating:

"Who was it that killed Brother?。」Mama, tomorrow take me into the city, help me find that enemy, so that whenever I happen to meet him later I can kill him."

The child spoke a child's words, which made her mother laugh!使Which made her mother's heart ache.

On the night that Wang Po quarreled with Zhao San, the water of the South River rose above its bed.沿Along the South River bank people shouted:

"The flood's rising!!」The flood's rising!"

People came and went along the riverbank, and Zhao San at home was shouting too:

"Hurry up and tell her to leave, she is no child of my family, I won't take in your brat.──」Quick——"

The next day every household sent its wheat to the threshing ground. At the first wheat-cutting, people would drink a round of wine to celebrate. This first year Zhao San had not planted wheat, and his house stood quiet and still. When someone came to invite him, he sat down at another man's table amid the cheerful talk, saw the others talking merrily, saw the others bringing in their wheat, and his big red hands grew awkward and ill at ease before the others! He fidgeted restlessly and at random, but no one paid him any attention; the wheat-growers talked only among themselves.

The river water subsided, but brought with it swarms of mosquitoes. At night the toads' croaking seemed as though pressed down beneath the humming of the mosquitoes.By day too the mosquito swarms were busy flying.Only Zhao San remained utterly, utterly silent.

What it’s about

Busy mosquitoes dominate the oppressive summer, reducing human concerns to the scale of itching skin, sleeplessness and blood. Their relentless activity mocks the villagers' exhaustion: the insects feed efficiently while people struggle through heat, stagnant air and inadequate shelter. Xiao Hong moves close to bodies that sweat, swell and slap at themselves, giving an apparently minor nuisance the density of an environment. Poverty is experienced not only through money or hunger but through the inability to shut nature outside.

The insects also extend the book's unsettling traffic between human and animal life. Mosquitoes take blood without moral meaning, while villagers describe their own predatory relations through elaborate customs and excuses. Illness hovers behind every bite, linking irritation to the epidemic of the next chapter. The fragmented scenes reproduce a night that will not settle: conversation, crying, animal noise and buzzing interrupt rest. By granting the mosquitoes the active verb in the title, Xiao Hong reverses the expected hierarchy. Humans become the passive field on which smaller lives flourish, a comic perspective that gradually darkens into an account of exposure and disease.

When it was written 背景

This chapter's microscopic attention is characteristic of Xiao Hong's bodily realism. In the early 1930s, public-health language circulated widely in modern China, but rural communities still faced infectious disease with poor housing and little medical access. The novel records that material gap without turning into a reform tract. Learners will encounter repetitive words for biting, scratching, heat and sleep; repetition is an aid here and also the source of the chapter's suffocating rhythm. Read the insects literally before treating them as symbols. Their biological busyness connects season, housing and health, and it prepares the epidemic not through abstract foreshadowing but through the reader's accumulated sensation of skin that cannot be protected.
