What it’s about
At the Mid-Autumn moonrise, seven-year-old Baohuang asks his father to light incense as his mother did the year before. The widower cannot answer and proposes fruit and lantern sightseeing instead. Each innocent question deepens his grief; the maid Suyun understands that the wife's hundredth-day death observance is near and takes the child out, but the father remains home and sends everyone away when they return.
In neighboring beds father and son listen to distant festival music. The child hears sobbing, asks whether his father fears darkness or a great cat, and recognizes the sound by comparing it with his own crying. The father calls it illness, then threatens to withdraw affection if the boy keeps speaking. Baohuang finally falls asleep to sobs as a lullaby. Love's tide rises through misunderstanding: the child cannot grasp ritual time, yet his presence makes private mourning audible and prevents grief from becoming solitary silence.
When it was written 背景
The story sets communal Mid-Autumn reunion against a household newly divided by death. The hundred-day observance belongs to Chinese mourning custom, while moon worship, incense, fruit, lanterns and river boats supply the festival world the widower can no longer enter as before. Its title prints 張 where modern usage would expect 漲, suggesting a swelling tide of love rather than a neat cycle of ebb and return. Learners should follow the child's repeated 為什麽 and the father's evasive 不舒服: limited vocabulary produces both cruelty and care, ending with breath, sob and snore rather than explanation.
