What it’s about
Refugees living beside Peach Creek cross a bridge toward a friend's sugarcane garden and find young Afang in despair. He says Hong'er, his betrothed since childhood, has fallen into the water, yet refuses to tell his mother because her grief would ripen like peaches. The narrator's brother races to Hong'er's house and returns with the girl alive. What drowned was a doll she had given Afang and named after herself.
Hong'er once told him that losing the doll meant losing her, and he believed the words literally. Seeing her alive breaks his first article of faith: now he understands that losing someone's object is not losing the person. The brother observes that an idle remark has shattered sincere belief. Hong'er calmly prefers mutual knowledge to belief and treats the incident as a way to learn Afang's character. They all eat sugarcane, swallowing his sorrow with its juice, as lived relationship replaces a possessive token.
When it was written 背景
The idyllic peach stream recalls the classical Peach Blossom Spring, but the opening reference to hurried flight keeps political displacement just outside the children's drama. Xu miniaturizes a religious question familiar elsewhere in the collection: does faith attach to a sign, or can knowledge survive the sign's loss? Hong'er's composure gives the girl interpretive authority, while Afang's literal devotion is tender rather than merely foolish. Learners should distinguish the living 紅兒 from the namesake 小囝 and follow 信念 versus 相知; the final sugarcane turns philosophical correction into shared sweetness.
