She sat down on a large rock to rest, and quite without meaning to, heard one or two cries of a child weeping. Without pausing to judge, she said at once,

She climbed down from the great rock and, following the direction the sound had come from, crawled into a cave beneath the rock. But there was nothing at all inside. She was so exhausted she could not climb back out, and so slept the whole night in the cave.

The next morning, when she woke, her mind was still utterly dazed. She sat on the rock, and in her ears there still lingered the sound of the child's

From morning until dusk she simply sat there; not only did she feel no hunger, she did not so much as drink water. A scattering of stars already hung in the sky, and that day passed away amid her comfort.

.』滿'Jing Gu! Jing Gu!' Those searching for her called out like this again and again all through the mountain, but there was not the slightest response.

.』'Perhaps she has been eaten by that tiger.'

No, that's not right. The tiger that came down the other night to seize a calf from Yun Ge's pen was killed for it. If that creature

Ah, but their labor was spent in vain!Even had they found her, if she had not yet caught the stars in her hand, how could her heart be at peace, how could she be willing to go back home with them?

What it’s about

In a village emptied by warfare, a widow named Jinggu begs every visitor to ask an officer to return her only son. Soldiers killed the boy before her eyes while he wore tiger-patterned clothes and reached for her embrace. At dusk she gathers his abandoned toys, cradles them as though they were the child, and warns him to keep quiet lest someone seize him again. Her memory cannot contain the event, so grief repeatedly remakes scraps into a living body.

Following a cry into the forbidden mountain, Jinggu mistakes a tiger cub for her tiger-clad son, falls into a ravine and finds a small skeleton. She embraces it as her child and plans to climb to the summit, take stars for its eyes and find elephant flesh to restore its body. Villagers search in vain. The title's universal mother is not an abstract fertility figure but a bereaved woman whose protective imagination cannot accept political violence or death's finality.

When it was written 背景

The story records the civilian aftermath of the warlord-era disorder named simply as 離亂, leaving the army and location unspecified so that one village can stand for many. Its images combine folk tale, Buddhist hyperbole and trauma: hiding Mount Sumeru in a mustard seed names an impossible act of compression, while stars and the fragrant elephant belong to a mythic language of restoration. The tiger pattern cruelly joins the murdered child, the cub and the villagers' report of a dead tiger. Readers should resist treating Jinggu only as “mad”; her errors expose a world whose official reason has already become monstrous.
