第十回　　　金寡婦貪利權受辱　張太醫論病細窮源 The Widow Jin Swallows Insult for Gain; Doctor Zhang Diagnoses the Illness in Detail

話說金榮因人多勢眾，又兼賈瑞勒令，賠了不是，給秦鐘磕了頭，寶玉方才不吵鬧了。The story goes that Jin Rong, finding himself outnumbered, and further compelled by Jia Rui's orders, apologized and kowtowed to Qin Zhong, and only then did Baoyu stop making a fuss.大家散了學，金榮回到家中，越想越氣，說：“秦鐘不過是賈蓉的小舅子，又不是賈家的子孫，附學讀書，也不過和我一樣。When school let out for the day, Jin Rong went home, and the more he thought about it the angrier he grew, saying: 'Qin Zhong is nothing more than Jia Rong's brother-in-law, not even a descendant of the Jia family — he's only attending the school as an outside student, just like me.'他因仗著寶玉和他好，他就目中無人。Because he relies on Baoyu's favor toward him, he acts as if no one else exists.他既是這樣，就該行些正經事，人也沒的說。If that's how he is, he ought at least to behave properly, and then no one would have anything to say.他素日又和寶玉鬼鬼祟祟的，只當人都是瞎子，看不見。But he's always sneaking about with Baoyu, as if he thinks everyone else is blind and can't see it.今日他又去勾搭人，偏偏的撞在我眼睛里。Today he went off to entice someone again, and as luck would have it, he ran smack into my sight.就是鬧出事來，我還怕什麼不成？”Even if it turns into a real fuss, what is there for me to be afraid of?'

话说金荣因人多势众，又兼贾瑞勒令，赔了不是，给秦钟磕了头，宝玉方才不吵闹了。大家散了学，金荣回到家中，越想越气，说：“秦钟不过是贾蓉的小舅子，又不是贾家的子孙，附学读书，也不过和我一样。他因仗著宝玉和他好，他就目中无人。他既是这样，就该行些正经事，人也没的说。他素日又和宝玉鬼鬼祟祟的，只当人都是瞎子，看不见。今日他又去勾搭人，偏偏的撞在我眼睛里。就是闹出事来，我还怕什么不成？”

他母親胡氏聽見他咕咕嘟嘟的說，因問道：“你又要爭什麼閒氣？His mother, née Hu, heard him muttering on and on, and asked: 'What idle grievance are you picking a fight over now?'好容易我望你姑媽說了，你姑媽千方百計的才向他們西府里的璉二奶奶跟前說了，你才得了這個念書的地方。It was only with great difficulty that I spoke to your aunt, and only after your aunt tried every possible means to put in a word with Second Mistress Lian over at the West Mansion, that you finally got this place to study.若不是仗著人家，咱們家里還有力量請的起先生？If we didn't depend on other people's goodwill, could our family afford to hire a tutor on its own?況且人家學里，茶也是現成的，飯也是現成的。Besides, at their school, the tea is provided ready-made, and the meals are provided ready-made too.你這二年在那里念書，家里也省好大的嚼用呢。These past two years that you've been studying there, it has saved the family a great deal on food expenses.省出來的，你又愛穿件鮮明衣服。And what's been saved, you like to spend on fine, bright clothes for yourself.再者，不是因你在那里念書，你就認得什麼薛大爺了？What's more, wasn't it only because you were studying there that you came to know Uncle Xue at all?那薛大爺一年補給補給，這二年也幫了咱們有七八十兩銀子。With Uncle Xue's help here and there over the year, these past two years he's helped us out to the tune of seventy or eighty taels of silver.你如今要鬧出了這個學房，再要找這麼個地方，我告訴你說罷，比登天還難呢！If you make trouble now and get yourself thrown out of that school, and then try to find another place like it — let me tell you, it would be harder than climbing to heaven!你給我老老實實的頑一會子睡你的覺去，好多著呢。”于是金榮忍氣吞聲，不多一時他自去睡了。Just play quietly for a while like a good boy, and then go to bed — there's plenty of time yet." So Jin Rong swallowed his anger, and before long went off to bed by himself.次日仍舊上學去了。The next day he went off to school as usual.不在話下。No more need be said of that.

他母亲胡氏听见他咕咕嘟嘟的说，因问道：“你又要争什么闲气？好容易我望你姑妈说了，你姑妈千方百计的才向他们西府里的琏二奶奶跟前说了，你才得了这个念书的地方。若不是仗著人家，咱们家里还有力量请的起先生？况且人家学里，茶也是现成的，饭也是现成的。你这二年在那里念书，家里也省好大的嚼用呢。省出来的，你又爱穿件鲜明衣服。再者，不是因你在那里念书，你就认得什么薛大爷了？那薛大爷一年补给补给，这二年也帮了咱们有七八十两银子。你如今要闹出了这个学房，再要找这么个地方，我告诉你说罢，比登天还难呢！你给我老老实实的顽一会子睡你的觉去，好多著呢。”于是金荣忍气吞声，不多一时他自去睡了。次日仍旧上学去了。不在话下。

且說他姑娘，原聘給的是賈家玉字輩的嫡派，名喚賈璜。Now, as for his aunt — she had originally been married into the direct line of the Jia family's "Jade" generation, to a man named Jia Huang.但其族人那里皆能象宁榮二府的富勢，原不用細說。But naturally, not all members of a clan can match the wealth and power of the Ning and Rong mansions — that goes without saying.這賈璜夫妻守著些小的產業，又時常到宁榮二府里去請請安，又會奉承鳳姐兒并尤氏，所以鳳姐兒尤氏也時常資助資助他，方能如此度日。This Jia Huang and his wife lived off some small property of their own, and they often went to pay their respects at the Ning and Rong mansions, and were skilled at flattering Xifeng and You-shi, so that Xifeng and You-shi would often help them out with a little money, and it was only in this way that they managed to get by.今日正遇天氣晴明，又值家中無事，遂帶了一個婆子，坐上車，來家里走走，瞧瞧寡嫂并侄兒。Today, the weather happening to be fine and clear, and there being nothing pressing at home, she took an old woman-servant along, got into her carriage, and came over to visit her widowed sister-in-law and nephew.

且说他姑娘，原聘给的是贾家玉字辈的嫡派，名唤贾璜。但其族人那里皆能象宁荣二府的富势，原不用细说。这贾璜夫妻守著些小的产业，又时常到宁荣二府里去请请安，又会奉承凤姐儿并尤氏，所以凤姐儿尤氏也时常资助资助他，方能如此度日。今日正遇天气晴明，又值家中无事，遂带了一个婆子，坐上车，来家里走走，瞧瞧寡嫂并侄儿。

閒話之間，金榮的母親偏提起昨日賈家學房里的那事，從頭至尾，一五一十都向他小姑子說了。In the course of their chatting, Jin Rong's mother happened to bring up the incident at the Jia family school the day before, and told her sister-in-law the whole story from beginning to end, in full detail.這璜大奶奶不聽則已，聽了，一時怒從心上起，說道：“這秦鐘小崽子是賈門的親戚，難道榮兒不是賈門的親戚？This Mrs. Jia Huang was fine as long as she hadn't heard it, but once she had, anger rose up in her heart, and she said: 'This little wretch Qin Zhong is a relation of the Jia family — is Rong'er not a relation of the Jia family too?人都別忒勢利了，況且都作的是什麼有臉的好事！People shouldn't be so shamelessly snobbish — and besides, what sort of respectable business is this anyway!就是寶玉，也犯不上向著他到這個樣。Even Baoyu has no call to take his side to such an extreme.等我去到東府瞧瞧我們珍大奶奶，再向秦鐘他姐姐說說，叫他評評這個理。”這金榮的母親聽了這話，急的了不得，忙說道：“這都是我的嘴快，告訴了姑奶奶了，求姑奶奶別去，別管他們誰是誰非。Let me go over to the East Mansion and call on our Mistress Zhen, and have a word with Qin Zhong's sister, and let her judge where the right of it lies.' When Jin Rong's mother heard this, she was thrown into a great fright, and hurriedly said: 'It's all because my tongue ran away with me and told you, Sister-in-law. I beg you not to go — don't concern yourself with who's right and who's wrong in this.倘或鬧起來，怎麼在那里站得住。If it should turn into a real quarrel, how could we ever hold our place there afterward?若是站不住，家里不但不能請先生，反倒在他身上添出許多嚼用來呢。”璜大奶奶聽了，說道：“那里管得許多，你等我說了，看是怎麼樣！”也不容他嫂子勸，一面叫老婆子瞧了車，就坐上往宁府里來。If we can't hold our place, not only will the family lose the tutor it's provided free, but we'll have to start spending extra on his keep besides.' Mrs. Jia Huang, hearing this, said: 'Never mind all that — just wait and see what I have to say about it!' Not letting her sister-in-law's pleading stop her, she had the old woman-servant see to the carriage, and set off for the Ning mansion.

闲话之间，金荣的母亲偏提起昨日贾家学房里的那事，从头至尾，一五一十都向他小姑子说了。这璜大奶奶不听则已，听了，一时怒从心上起，说道：“这秦钟小崽子是贾门的亲戚，难道荣儿不是贾门的亲戚？人都别忒势利了，况且都作的是什么有脸的好事！就是宝玉，也犯不上向著他到这个样。等我去到东府瞧瞧我们珍大奶奶，再向秦钟他姐姐说说，叫他评评这个理。”这金荣的母亲听了这话，急的了不得，忙说道：“这都是我的嘴快，告诉了姑奶奶了，求姑奶奶别去，别管他们谁是谁非。倘或闹起来，怎么在那里站得住。若是站不住，家里不但不能请先生，反倒在他身上添出许多嚼用来呢。”璜大奶奶听了，说道：“那里管得许多，你等我说了，看是怎么样！”也不容他嫂子劝，一面叫老婆子瞧了车，就坐上往宁府里来。

到了宁府，進了車門，到了東邊小角門前下了車，進去見了賈珍之妻尤氏。On arriving at the Ning mansion, she went in through the carriage gate, got down at the small side gate on the east, went in, and saw You-shi, the wife of Jia Zhen.也未敢氣高，殷殷勤勤敘過寒溫，說了些閒話，方問道：“今日怎麼沒見蓉大奶奶？”尤氏說道：“他這些日子不知怎麼著，經期有兩個多月沒來。She did not presume to put on airs, but exchanged polite greetings most attentively, chatted about this and that, and only then asked: 'How is it I haven't seen Mistress Rong today?' You-shi said: 'These past days, I don't know what's the matter with her, but her monthly period hasn't come for over two months now.叫大夫瞧了，又說并不是喜。We had a doctor examine her, and he said it isn't a happy event either.那兩日，到了下半天就懶待動，話也懶待說，眼神也發眩。These past couple of days, by afternoon she grows too listless to move about, too listless even to speak, and her eyes turn dizzy.我說他：‘你且不必拘禮，早晚不必照例上來，你就好生養養罷。I told her: 'For now, don't stand on ceremony — there's no need to come and pay your respects morning and evening as usual; just rest and take good care of yourself.'就是有親戚一家兒來，有我呢。'Even if relatives come to visit, I'll be here to see to them.'就有長輩們怪你，等我替你告訴。’連蓉哥我都囑咐了，我說：‘你不許累掯他，不許招他生氣，叫他靜靜的養養就好了。'And if the elders find fault with you for it, I'll explain on your behalf.' I even gave Brother Rong instructions too, telling him: 'You mustn't tire her out, you mustn't provoke her into getting upset — just let her rest quietly and she'll be fine.'他要想什麼吃，只管到我這里取來。'If she craves anything to eat, just come and get it from me.'倘或我這里沒有，只管望你璉二嬸子那里要去。'And if I don't have it, just go and ask for it from your Aunt Lian.'倘或他有個好和歹，你再要娶這麼一個媳婦，這麼個模樣兒，這麼個性情的人兒，打著燈籠也沒地方找去。’他這為人行事，那個親戚，那個一家的長輩不喜歡他？'If anything should happen to her, and you had to marry again, you'd never find another wife with looks like hers, a temperament like hers, not if you searched with a lantern.' As for the way she conducts herself, is there a single relative, a single elder in the family, who doesn't love her for it?所以我這兩日好不煩心，焦的我了不得。That's why these past two days I've been so troubled at heart, worried nearly out of my wits.偏偏今日早晨他兄弟來瞧他，誰知那小孩子家不知好歹，看見他姐姐身上不大爽快，就有事也不當告訴他，別說是這麼一點子小事，就是你受了一萬分的委曲，也不該向他說才是。And then, of all things, this morning her younger brother came to see her — and who'd have thought that boy, not knowing any better, would go and tell her, even seeing his sister wasn't feeling well, when he shouldn't have told her anything even if it were something serious — let alone such a trifling little matter; even if you'd suffered the worst injustice in the world, you still oughtn't to have spoken of it to her.誰知他們昨兒學房里打架，不知是那里附學來的一個人欺侮了他了。It turns out that yesterday there was a fight at the school, and some outside student attending there — I don't know from where — had bullied him.里頭還有些不干不淨的話，都告訴了他姐姐。And mixed up in it were some none-too-clean remarks besides, and he went and told all of it to his sister.嬸子，你是知道那媳婦的：雖則見了人有說有笑，會行事兒，他可心細，心又重，不拘聽見個什麼話兒，都要度量個三日五夜才罷。Aunt, you know what our daughter-in-law is like: though she's all smiles and pleasant talk when she meets people, and knows how to conduct herself, she's fine-minded and takes things heavily to heart — no matter what word she hears, she has to turn it over and brood on it for days and nights before she can let it go.這病就是打這個秉性上頭思慮出來的。This illness of hers has come precisely from all this brooding, born of that very disposition.今兒聽見有人欺負了他兄弟，又是惱，又是氣。Today, hearing that someone had bullied her brother, she was both vexed and angry.惱的是那群混帳狐朋狗友的扯是搬非，調三惑四的那些人，氣的是他兄弟不學好，不上心念書，以致如此學里吵鬧。Vexed at that pack of scoundrel cronies who go about stirring up trouble and gossip and leading others astray, and angry that her brother wasn't applying himself to his studies properly, which is what led to such a row at the school.他聽了這事，今日索性連早飯也沒吃。After hearing about it, she simply didn't even eat breakfast today.我聽見了，我方到他那邊安慰了他一會子，又勸解了他兄弟一會子。When I heard of it, I went over to her side and comforted her for a while, and then talked some sense into her brother for a while too.我叫他兄弟到那邊府里找寶玉去了，我才看著他吃了半盞燕窩湯，我才過來了。I sent her brother off to the other mansion to look for Baoyu, and only after I'd watched her drink half a cup of bird's-nest soup did I come over here.嬸子，你說我心焦不心焦？Aunt, tell me — isn't this enough to make anyone's heart ache with worry?況且如今又沒個好大夫，我想到他這病上，我心里倒象針扎似的。And what's more, there's no good doctor to be found right now — whenever I think of her illness, it's as if my heart were being pricked with needles.你們知道有什麼好大夫沒有？”Do you know of any good doctors?'

金氏聽了這半日話，把方才在他嫂子家的那一團要向秦氏理論的盛氣，早嚇的都丟在爪洼國去了。By the time Mrs. Jin had listened to all this, the whole head of righteous anger she'd worked up at her sister-in-law's house, ready to have it out with Qin-shi, had already been frightened clean away to the ends of the earth.聽見尤氏問他有知道好大夫的話，連忙答道：“我們這麼聽著，實在也沒見人說有個好大夫。Hearing You-shi ask whether she knew of any good doctors, she hastened to reply: 'As far as we've heard, we really haven't come across anyone who mentioned a good doctor.如今聽起大奶奶這個來，定不得還是喜呢。But now, hearing what you say, Mistress, it may well still turn out to be a happy event after all.嫂子倒別教人混治。Sister-in-law, whatever you do, don't let just anyone treat her carelessly.倘或認錯了，這可是了不得的。”尤氏道：“可不是呢。”正是說話間，賈珍從外進來，見了金氏，便向尤氏問道：“這不是璜大奶奶么？”金氏向前給賈珍請了安。If the diagnosis is mistaken, that would be a terrible thing indeed.' You-shi said, 'That's just it.' Just as they were speaking, Jia Zhen came in from outside, and seeing Mrs. Jin, asked You-shi: 'Isn't this Mrs. Jia Huang?' Mrs. Jin came forward and paid her respects to Jia Zhen.賈珍向尤氏說道：“讓這大妹妹吃了飯去。”賈珍說著話，就過那屋里去了。Jia Zhen said to You-shi: 'Do keep this sister here for a meal before she goes.' So saying, Jia Zhen went off into the other room.金氏此來，原要向秦氏說說秦鐘欺負了他侄兒的事，聽見秦氏有病，不但不能說，亦且不敢提了。Mrs. Jin had come originally meaning to speak to Qin-shi about Qin Zhong's bullying of her nephew, but on hearing that Qin-shi was ill, not only could she not bring it up, she no longer even dared to mention it.況且賈珍尤氏又待的很好，反轉怒為喜，又說了一會子話兒，方家去了。Besides, Jia Zhen and You-shi had treated her so well that her anger had turned instead to pleasure, and after chatting a while longer, she finally went home.

金氏听了这半日话，把方才在他嫂子家的那一团要向秦氏理论的盛气，早吓的都丢在爪洼国去了。听见尤氏问他有知道好大夫的话，连忙答道：“我们这么听著，实在也没见人说有个好大夫。如今听起大奶奶这个来，定不得还是喜呢。嫂子倒别教人混治。倘或认错了，这可是了不得的。”尤氏道：“可不是呢。”正是说话间，贾珍从外进来，见了金氏，便向尤氏问道：“这不是璜大奶奶么？”金氏向前给贾珍请了安。贾珍向尤氏说道：“让这大妹妹吃了饭去。”贾珍说著话，就过那屋里去了。金氏此来，原要向秦氏说说秦钟欺负了他侄儿的事，听见秦氏有病，不但不能说，亦且不敢提了。况且贾珍尤氏又待的很好，反转怒为喜，又说了一会子话儿，方家去了。

金氏去後，賈珍方過來坐下，問尤氏道：“今日他來，有什麼說的事情么？”尤氏答道：“倒沒說什麼。After Mrs. Jin had left, Jia Zhen came over and sat down, and asked You-shi: 'Did she come to say anything in particular today?' You-shi replied: 'No, nothing much.一進來的時候，臉上倒象有些著了惱的氣色似的，及說了半天話，又提起媳婦這病，他倒漸漸的氣色平定了。When she first came in, she seemed to have a look of anger about her, but after we'd talked for a good while, and I brought up our daughter-in-law's illness, her expression gradually calmed down.你又叫讓他吃飯，他聽見媳婦這麼病，也不好意思只管坐著，又說了幾句閒話兒就去了，倒沒求什麼事。Then when you asked her to stay for a meal, hearing how ill our daughter-in-law was, she felt it wouldn't do to just sit there any longer, and after a few more words of small talk, she left — she didn't ask for anything at all, as it turns out.如今且說媳婦這病，你到那里尋一個好大夫來與他瞧瞧要緊，可別耽誤了。Now, as for our daughter-in-law's illness, the important thing is for you to find a good doctor somewhere to examine her — do be sure not to let it drag on.現今咱們家走的這群大夫，那里要得，一個個都是聽著人的口氣兒，人怎麼說，他也添幾句文話兒說一遍。As for that lot of doctors who've been coming to our house lately, they're really no good at all — every one of them just listens to what people tell him, and then repeats it back dressed up in a few flowery phrases.可倒殷勤的很，三四個人一日輪流著倒有四五遍來看脈。They're attentive enough, I'll grant — three or four of them taking turns, coming to check her pulse four or five times a day.他們大家商量著立個方子，吃了也不見效，倒弄得一日換四五遍衣裳，坐起來見大夫，其實于病人無益。”賈珍說道：“可是。They all confer together and draw up a prescription, but she takes it and it does no good — all it accomplishes is having her change clothes four or five times a day and sit up to receive the doctors, which really does the patient no good at all.' Jia Zhen said: 'Quite right.這孩子也糊涂，何必脫脫換換的，倘再著了涼，更添一層病，那還了得。The child is being foolish too — why keep changing clothes over and over? If she should catch a chill on top of it and add another layer of illness, that would really be too much.衣裳任憑是什麼好的，可又值什麼，孩子的身子要緊，就是一天穿一套新的，也不值什麼。No matter how fine the clothes are, what are they worth compared to the child's health? Even if she wore a fresh new outfit every single day, it wouldn't amount to anything by comparison.我正進來要告訴你：方才馮紫英來看我，他見我有些抑郁之色，問我是怎麼了。I was just coming in to tell you: just now Feng Ziying came to see me, and noticing I looked somewhat troubled, he asked me what was wrong.我才告訴他說，媳婦忽然身子有好大的不爽快，因為不得個好太醫，斷不透是喜是病，又不知有妨礙無妨礙，所以我這兩日心里著實著急。So I told him that our daughter-in-law had suddenly taken quite unwell, and that because we hadn't found a good physician, we couldn't tell for certain whether it was a happy condition or an illness, nor whether there was cause for concern or not — which is why I've been truly anxious these past two days.馮紫英因說起他有一個幼時從學的先生，姓張名友士，學問最淵博的，更兼醫理极深，且能斷人的生死。Feng Ziying then mentioned that he had a teacher from his boyhood studies, surnamed Zhang, given name Youshi, a man of the most profound learning, who moreover has an extremely deep understanding of medicine, and can even determine whether a person will live or die.今年是上京給他兒子來捐官，現在他家住著呢。This year he has come up to the capital to purchase an official post for his son, and is presently staying at Feng Ziying's house.這麼看來，竟是合該媳婦的病在他手里除災亦未可知。Seen in this light, it may well be fated that our daughter-in-law's illness is meant to be cured by his hand, who's to say.我即刻差人拿我的名帖請去了。I sent someone at once with my calling card to invite him.今日倘或天晚了不能來，明日想必一定來。If it's too late in the day for him to come today, he's sure to come tomorrow.況且馮紫英又即刻回家親自去求他，務必叫他來瞧瞧。And besides, Feng Ziying went straight home himself to plead with him in person, insisting that he must come to examine her.等這個張先生來瞧了再說罷。”Let's wait until this Dr. Zhang comes to examine her, and decide what to do then."

金氏去后，贾珍方过来坐下，问尤氏道：“今日他来，有什么说的事情么？”尤氏答道：“倒没说什么。一进来的时候，脸上倒象有些著了恼的气色似的，及说了半天话，又提起媳妇这病，他倒渐渐的气色平定了。你又叫让他吃饭，他听见媳妇这么病，也不好意思只管坐著，又说了几句闲话儿就去了，倒没求什么事。如今且说媳妇这病，你到那里寻一个好大夫来与他瞧瞧要紧，可别耽误了。现今咱们家走的这群大夫，那里要得，一个个都是听著人的口气儿，人怎么说，他也添几句文话儿说一遍。可倒殷勤的很，三四个人一日轮流著倒有四五遍来看脉。他们大家商量著立个方子，吃了也不见效，倒弄得一日换四五遍衣裳，坐起来见大夫，其实于病人无益。”贾珍说道：“可是。这孩子也糊涂，何必脱脱换换的，倘再著了凉，更添一层病，那还了得。衣裳任凭是什么好的，可又值什么，孩子的身子要紧，就是一天穿一套新的，也不值什么。我正进来要告诉你：方才冯紫英来看我，他见我有些抑郁之色，问我是怎么了。我才告诉他说，媳妇忽然身子有好大的不爽快，因为不得个好太医，断不透是喜是病，又不知有妨碍无妨碍，所以我这两日心里著实著急。冯紫英因说起他有一个幼时从学的先生，姓张名友士，学问最渊博的，更兼医理极深，且能断人的生死。今年是上京给他儿子来捐官，现在他家住著呢。这么看来，竟是合该媳妇的病在他手里除灾亦未可知。我即刻差人拿我的名帖请去了。今日倘或天晚了不能来，明日想必一定来。况且冯紫英又即刻回家亲自去求他，务必叫他来瞧瞧。等这个张先生来瞧了再说罢。”

尤氏聽了，心中甚喜，因說道：“後日是太爺的壽日，到底怎麼辦？”賈珍說道：“我方才到了太爺那里去請安，兼請太爺來家來受一受一家子的禮。You-shi, hearing this, was greatly pleased at heart, and then said: 'The day after tomorrow is the old master's birthday — what's finally to be done about it?' Jia Zhen said: 'I just went to pay my respects to the old master, and to invite him to come home to receive the family's congratulations.太爺因說道：‘我是清淨慣了的，我不願意往你們那是非場中去鬧去。The old master said: 'I've grown used to a quiet, uncluttered life, and I have no wish to go making a fuss in that hubbub of yours.你們必定說是我的生日，要叫我去受眾人些頭，莫過你把我從前注的《陰騭文》給我令人好好的寫出來刻了，比叫我無故受眾人的頭還強百倍呢。'If you insist it's my birthday and want me to go and accept everyone's kowtows, far better that you have someone copy out properly and have engraved the commentary I once wrote on the Tract of the Quiet Way — that would be a hundred times better than having me accept everyone's bows for no good reason.'倘或後日這兩日一家子要來，你就在家里好好的款待他們就是了。'If, over the next two days, members of the family want to come, just see to it that you entertain them properly at home, that's all.'也不必給我送什麼東西來，連你後日也不必來，你要心中不安，你今日就給我磕了頭去。'There's no need to send me anything either, and there's no need even for you to come the day after tomorrow. If it troubles your conscience, come and kowtow to me today instead.'倘或後日你要來，又跟隨多少人來鬧我，我必和你不依。’如此說了又說，後日我是再不敢去的了。'And if you should come the day after tomorrow, bringing who knows how many people along to disturb me, I will most certainly not let it pass with you.' He said this over and over, so I dare not go there the day after tomorrow after all.且叫來升來，吩咐他預備兩日的筵席。”尤氏因叫人叫了賈蓉來：“吩咐來升照舊例預備兩日的筵席，要丰丰富富的。'For now, have Lai Sheng called in, and tell him to prepare the feast for the two days.' You-shi thereupon had someone call Jia Rong in: 'Tell Lai Sheng to prepare the feast for the two days according to the usual custom, and make it lavish and abundant.你再親自到西府里去請老太太，大太太，二太太和你璉二嬸子來逛逛。You yourself go over to the West Mansion and invite the Old Lady, the First Lady, the Second Lady, and your Aunt Lian to come over for a visit.你父親今日又聽見一個好大夫，業已打發人請去了，想必明日必來。Your father has also heard of a good doctor today, and has already sent someone to invite him — he'll surely come tomorrow.你可將他這些日子的病症細細的告訴他。”Be sure to tell him in full detail all of her symptoms these past days."

尤氏听了，心中甚喜，因说道：“后日是太爷的寿日，到底怎么办？”贾珍说道：“我方才到了太爷那里去请安，兼请太爷来家来受一受一家子的礼。太爷因说道：‘我是清净惯了的，我不愿意往你们那是非场中去闹去。你们必定说是我的生日，要叫我去受众人些头，莫过你把我从前注的《阴骘文》给我令人好好的写出来刻了，比叫我无故受众人的头还强百倍呢。倘或后日这两日一家子要来，你就在家里好好的款待他们就是了。也不必给我送什么东西来，连你后日也不必来，你要心中不安，你今日就给我磕了头去。倘或后日你要来，又跟随多少人来闹我，我必和你不依。’如此说了又说，后日我是再不敢去的了。且叫来升来，吩咐他预备两日的筵席。”尤氏因叫人叫了贾蓉来：“吩咐来升照旧例预备两日的筵席，要丰丰富富的。你再亲自到西府里去请老太太，大太太，二太太和你琏二婶子来逛逛。你父亲今日又听见一个好大夫，业已打发人请去了，想必明日必来。你可将他这些日子的病症细细的告诉他。”

賈蓉一一的答應著出去了。Jia Rong answered yes to each instruction in turn and went out.正遇著方才去馮紫英家請那先生的小子回來了，因回道：“奴才方才到了馮大爺家，拿了老爺的名帖請那先生去。Just then, the servant boy who had gone earlier to Feng Ziying's house to invite the physician came back, and reported: 'Your servant went just now to Master Feng's house, and presented the master's calling card to invite that gentleman.那先生說道：‘方才這里大爺也向我說了。'That gentleman said: "Just now, the young master here also spoke to me about it."'但是今日拜了一天的客，才回到家，此時精神實在不能支持，就是去到府上也不能看脈。’他說等調息一夜，明日務必到府。'"But today I've spent the whole day paying calls, and have only just returned home; at present my spirits truly can't hold up, and even if I went to your mansion I wouldn't be able to take the pulse properly." He said that after resting and recovering his breath overnight, he would without fail come to the mansion tomorrow.'他又說，他‘醫學淺薄，本不敢當此重荐，因我們馮大爺和府上的大人既已如此說了，又不得不去，你先替我回明大人就是了。'He also said: "My medical learning is shallow, and I really dare not accept such a weighty recommendation, but since our Master Feng and the master of your household have both spoken of it in this way, I cannot but go. For now, please go back and report this to the master on my behalf."'大人的名帖實不敢當。’仍叫奴才拿回來了。'"I truly dare not presume to accept the master's calling card." And he had your servant bring it back with him.'哥兒替奴才回一聲兒罷。”賈蓉轉身复進去，回了賈珍尤氏的話，方出來叫了來升來，吩咐他預備兩日的筵席的話。'Young master, would you please report this on your servant's behalf.' Jia Rong turned and went back inside, reported this to Jia Zhen and You-shi, and only then came out and called Lai Sheng in, to give him the instructions about preparing the two days' feast.來升聽畢，自去照例料理。Having heard everything, Lai Sheng went off to make the arrangements according to custom.不在話下。No more need be said of that.

贾蓉一一的答应著出去了。正遇著方才去冯紫英家请那先生的小子回来了，因回道：“奴才方才到了冯大爷家，拿了老爷的名帖请那先生去。那先生说道：‘方才这里大爷也向我说了。但是今日拜了一天的客，才回到家，此时精神实在不能支持，就是去到府上也不能看脉。’他说等调息一夜，明日务必到府。他又说，他‘医学浅薄，本不敢当此重荐，因我们冯大爷和府上的大人既已如此说了，又不得不去，你先替我回明大人就是了。大人的名帖实不敢当。’仍叫奴才拿回来了。哥儿替奴才回一声儿罢。”贾蓉转身复进去，回了贾珍尤氏的话，方出来叫了来升来，吩咐他预备两日的筵席的话。来升听毕，自去照例料理。不在话下。

且說次日午間，人回道：“請的那張先生來了。”賈珍遂延入大廳坐下。Now, at midday the next day, someone reported: 'The Dr. Zhang who was invited has arrived.' Jia Zhen accordingly had him shown into the main hall to be seated.茶畢，方開言道：“昨承馮大爺示知老先生人品學問，又兼深通醫學，小弟不胜欽仰之至。”張先生道：“晚生粗鄙下士，本知見淺陋，昨因馮大爺示知，大人家第謙恭下士，又承呼喚，敢不奉命。When the tea was finished, Jia Zhen spoke up first, saying: 'Yesterday, Master Feng was kind enough to inform me of your character and learning, sir, and of your profound mastery of medicine besides — I cannot express how greatly I admire you.' Mr. Zhang said: 'I am but a crude and humble scholar, my knowledge and views shallow indeed. Yesterday, when Master Feng informed me that your honored household is courteous and humble even toward lowly scholars, and now that I have been summoned, how could I dare not obey?'但毫無實學，倍增顏汗。”賈珍道：“先生何必過謙。'But I have no real learning to speak of, which only redoubles my shame and makes me sweat with embarrassment.' Jia Zhen said: 'Sir, why be so overly modest?'就請先生進去看看兒婦，仰仗高明，以釋下怀。”于是，賈蓉同了進去。'Please just go in and examine my daughter-in-law — I am relying on your great skill to set my mind at ease.' So Jia Rong accompanied him inside.到了賈蓉居室，見了秦氏，向賈蓉說道：“這就是尊夫人了？”賈蓉道：“正是。On reaching Jia Rong's chambers, he saw Qin-shi, and said to Jia Rong: 'This is your honored wife?' Jia Rong said: 'Just so.'請先生坐下，讓我把賤內的病說一說再看脈如何？”那先生道：“依小弟的意思，竟先看過脈再說的為是。'Please be seated, sir. Shall I first describe my humble wife's illness before you examine her pulse?' The gentleman said: 'In my humble opinion, it would be better to look at the pulse first, and discuss it afterward.'我是初造尊府的，本也不曉得什麼，但是我們馮大爺務必叫小弟過來看看，小弟所以不得不來。'This is my first visit to your honored household, and I really know nothing of the matter beforehand; but our Master Feng insisted that I come and examine her, and so I could not but come.'如今看了脈息，看小弟說的是不是，再將這些日子的病勢講一講，大家斟酌一個方兒，可用不可用，那時大爺再定奪。”賈蓉道：“先生實在高明，如今恨相見之晚。'Now, once I've examined the pulse, see whether what I say is correct, and then describe to me the course of her illness these past days, and together we can weigh out a prescription, whether it's fit to use or not — and then you, sir, may decide.' Jia Rong said: 'Sir, your skill is truly of the highest order — I only regret we did not meet sooner.'就請先生看一看脈息，可治不可治，以便使家父母放心。”于是家下媳婦們捧過大迎枕來，一面給秦氏拉著袖口，露出脈來。'Please do examine the pulse, whether it can be treated or not, so that my parents may be set at ease.' Thereupon the household maids brought over a large bolster, and helped pull back Qin-shi's sleeve cuff so as to expose her wrist for the pulse.先生方伸手按在右手脈上，調息了至數，宁神細診了有半刻的工夫，方換過左手，亦复如是。The gentleman then reached out and pressed his fingers upon the pulse of her right hand, steadying his own breath to count the beats, and calmed his mind to examine it carefully for the better part of a quarter hour, before changing over to the left hand and doing likewise.診畢脈息，說道：“我們外邊坐罷。”Having finished examining the pulse, he said: 'Let us go and sit outside.'

且说次日午间，人回道：“请的那张先生来了。”贾珍遂延入大厅坐下。茶毕，方开言道：“昨承冯大爷示知老先生人品学问，又兼深通医学，小弟不胜钦仰之至。”张先生道：“晚生粗鄙下士，本知见浅陋，昨因冯大爷示知，大人家第谦恭下士，又承呼唤，敢不奉命。但毫无实学，倍增颜汗。”贾珍道：“先生何必过谦。就请先生进去看看儿妇，仰仗高明，以释下怀。”于是，贾蓉同了进去。到了贾蓉居室，见了秦氏，向贾蓉说道：“这就是尊夫人了？”贾蓉道：“正是。请先生坐下，让我把贱内的病说一说再看脉如何？”那先生道：“依小弟的意思，竟先看过脉再说的为是。我是初造尊府的，本也不晓得什么，但是我们冯大爷务必叫小弟过来看看，小弟所以不得不来。如今看了脉息，看小弟说的是不是，再将这些日子的病势讲一讲，大家斟酌一个方儿，可用不可用，那时大爷再定夺。”贾蓉道：“先生实在高明，如今恨相见之晚。就请先生看一看脉息，可治不可治，以便使家父母放心。”于是家下媳妇们捧过大迎枕来，一面给秦氏拉著袖口，露出脉来。先生方伸手按在右手脉上，调息了至数，宁神细诊了有半刻的工夫，方换过左手，亦复如是。诊毕脉息，说道：“我们外边坐罢。”

賈蓉于是同先生到外間房里床上坐下，一個婆子端了茶來。Jia Rong then went with the gentleman to sit on the couch in the outer room, and an old woman-servant brought in tea.賈蓉道：“先生請茶。”于是陪先生吃了茶，遂問道：“先生看這脈息，還治得治不得？”先生道：“看得尊夫人這脈息：左寸沉數，左關沉伏，右寸細而無力，右關虛而無神。Jia Rong said: 'Please, sir, have some tea.' And so he sat with the gentleman over tea, and then asked: 'Sir, from this pulse you've examined, can it still be treated or not?' The gentleman said: 'Examining your honored wife's pulse, I find: the left cun position is deep and rapid, the left guan position is deep and hidden; the right cun position is fine and weak, the right guan position is empty and lacking in spirit.'其左寸沉數者，乃心氣虛而生火，左關沉伏者，乃肝家氣滯血虧。'The fact that the left cun is deep and rapid means the heart's vital energy is deficient and generating fire; the fact that the left guan is deep and hidden means the liver's energy is stagnant and its blood depleted.'右寸細而無力者，乃肺經氣分太虛，右關虛而無神者，乃脾土被肝木克制。'The fact that the right cun is fine and weak means the lung meridian's energy aspect is far too deficient; the fact that the right guan is empty and lacking in spirit means the spleen earth is being overcome by the liver wood.'心氣虛而生火者，應現經期不調，夜間不寐。'When the heart's energy is deficient and generates fire, one should expect the menstrual cycle to be irregular, and sleeplessness at night.'肝家血虧氣滯者，必然肋下疼脹，月信過期，心中發熱。'When the liver's blood is depleted and its energy stagnant, there must be pain and distension beneath the ribs, the monthly courses running late, and a feverish sensation in the chest.'肺經氣分太虛者，頭目不時眩暈，寅卯間必然自汗，如坐舟中。'When the lung meridian's energy aspect is far too deficient, the head and eyes grow dizzy from time to time, and between the hours of the tiger and the hare there must be spontaneous sweating, as if one were sitting in a rocking boat.'脾土被肝木克制者，必然不思飲食，精神倦怠，四肢酸軟。'When the spleen earth is overcome by the liver wood, there must be no appetite for food or drink, a weary and listless spirit, and soreness and weakness in the four limbs.'据我看這脈息，應當有這些症候才對。Judging by this pulse of mine, these are the symptoms that ought properly to be present.或以這個脈為喜脈，則小弟不敢從其教也。”旁邊一個貼身伏侍的婆子道：“何嘗不是這樣呢。'But if one were to take this pulse for a pulse of pregnancy, then I, your humble servant, dare not go along with such a teaching.' An old woman-servant standing to one side, one of her personal attendants, said: 'Isn't that exactly how it is!'真正先生說的如神，倒不用我們告訴了。"Truly the doctor's words are like magic — no need for us to explain anything."如今我們家里現有好幾位太醫老爺瞧著呢，都不能的當真切的這麼說。"Right now we already have several imperial physicians attending her, and none of them could speak so precisely and truly."有一位說是喜，有一位說是病，這位說不相干，那位說怕冬至，總沒有個准話兒。"One says it's a happy condition, another says it's an illness; this one says it's nothing serious, that one fears the winter solstice — there's never been a definite word."求老爺明白指示指示。”"We beg you, sir, to give us a clear diagnosis."

贾蓉于是同先生到外间房里床上坐下，一个婆子端了茶来。贾蓉道：“先生请茶。”于是陪先生吃了茶，遂问道：“先生看这脉息，还治得治不得？”先生道：“看得尊夫人这脉息：左寸沉数，左关沉伏，右寸细而无力，右关虚而无神。其左寸沉数者，乃心气虚而生火，左关沉伏者，乃肝家气滞血亏。右寸细而无力者，乃肺经气分太虚，右关虚而无神者，乃脾土被肝木克制。心气虚而生火者，应现经期不调，夜间不寐。肝家血亏气滞者，必然肋下疼胀，月信过期，心中发热。肺经气分太虚者，头目不时眩晕，寅卯间必然自汗，如坐舟中。脾土被肝木克制者，必然不思饮食，精神倦怠，四肢酸软。据我看这脉息，应当有这些症候才对。或以这个脉为喜脉，则小弟不敢从其教也。”旁边一个贴身伏侍的婆子道：“何尝不是这样呢。真正先生说的如神，倒不用我们告诉了。如今我们家里现有好几位太医老爷瞧著呢，都不能的当真切的这么说。有一位说是喜，有一位说是病，这位说不相干，那位说怕冬至，总没有个准话儿。求老爷明白指示指示。”

那先生笑道：“大奶奶這個症候，可是那眾位耽擱了。The doctor smiled and said, "As for the young mistress's condition, it seems those other gentlemen have delayed it."要在初次行經的日期就用藥治起來，不但斷無今日之患，而且此時已全愈了。"Had it been treated with medicine right from the first time her monthly courses came, not only would there be no such trouble today, but by now she would already be completely cured."如今既是把病耽誤到這個地位，也是應有此災。"Now that the illness has been allowed to reach this point, this calamity was only to be expected."依我看來，這病尚有三分治得。"As I see it, this illness can still be cured, to about three parts in ten."吃了我的藥看，若是夜里睡的著覺，那時又添了二分拿手了。"Try taking my medicine and see — if at night she is able to sleep, then I will have two more parts of confidence added."据我看這脈息：大奶奶是個心性高強聰明不過的人，聰明忒過，則不如意事常有，不如意事常有，則思慮太過。"Judging by this pulse: the young mistress is a person of exceptionally strong will and intelligence, and being overly intelligent, she often has things not go as she wishes; when things often do not go as one wishes, one's thoughts and worries become excessive."此病是憂慮傷脾，肝木忒旺，經血所以不能按時而至。"This illness comes from worry and anxiety injuring the spleen, with the liver's wood element too dominant, so that her menstrual blood cannot come on time."大奶奶從前的行經的日子問一問，斷不是常縮，必是常長的。"Ask about the young mistress's dates of menstruation in the past — it surely was not that they often came early, but rather that they often came late."是不是？”這婆子答道：“可不是，從沒有縮過，或是長兩日三日，以至十日都長過。”先生聽了道：“妙啊！"Is that not so?" The old woman answered, "Indeed it is — it has never once come early, but has come two or three days late, even as much as ten days late, on many occasions." Hearing this, the doctor said, "Excellent!這就是病源了。This is indeed the root cause of the illness.從前若能夠以養心調經之藥服之，何至于此。"Had she, in the past, been able to take medicines to nourish the heart and regulate the menses, how could it have come to this?"這如今明顯出一個水虧木旺的症候來。"Now it has plainly shown itself to be a condition of deficient water and overabundant wood."待用藥看看。”于是寫了方子，遞與賈蓉，上寫的是："Let us try some medicine and see." Thereupon he wrote out a prescription and handed it to Jia Rong; what was written on it read:

那先生笑道：“大奶奶这个症候，可是那众位耽搁了。要在初次行经的日期就用药治起来，不但断无今日之患，而且此时已全愈了。如今既是把病耽误到这个地位，也是应有此灾。依我看来，这病尚有三分治得。吃了我的药看，若是夜里睡的著觉，那时又添了二分拿手了。据我看这脉息：大奶奶是个心性高强聪明不过的人，聪明忒过，则不如意事常有，不如意事常有，则思虑太过。此病是忧虑伤脾，肝木忒旺，经血所以不能按时而至。大奶奶从前的行经的日子问一问，断不是常缩，必是常长的。是不是？”这婆子答道：“可不是，从没有缩过，或是长两日三日，以至十日都长过。”先生听了道：“妙啊！这就是病源了。从前若能够以养心调经之药服之，何至于此。这如今明显出一个水亏木旺的症候来。待用药看看。”于是写了方子，递与贾蓉，上写的是：

益氣養榮補脾和肝湯Decoction for Boosting Qi, Nourishing the Blood, Tonifying the Spleen and Harmonizing the Liver

益气养荣补脾和肝汤

人參二錢、白朮二錢、土炒雲苓三錢、熟地四錢、歸身二錢、酒洗白芍二錢、炒川芎錢半、黃苓三錢、香附米二錢、製醋柴胡八分、怀山藥二錢、炒真阿膠二錢、蛤粉炒延胡索錢半、酒炒炙甘草八分，引用建蓮子七粒去心、紅棗二枚。Ginseng, two qian; Atractylodes, two qian; Poria fried with earth, three qian; prepared rehmannia, four qian; angelica root, two qian; white peony washed in wine, two qian; ligusticum fried, one and a half qian; scutellaria, three qian; cyperus root, two qian; bupleurum prepared with vinegar, eight fen; Chinese yam, two qian; true donkey-hide gelatin fried, two qian; corydalis fried with clam powder, one and a half qian; roasted licorice fried with wine, eight fen; to be taken with seven seeded lotus seeds and two red dates as a guide.

人参二钱、白术二钱、土炒云苓三钱、熟地四钱、归身二钱、酒洗白芍二钱、炒川芎钱半、黄苓三钱、香附米二钱、制醋柴胡八分、怀山药二钱、炒真阿胶二钱、蛤粉炒延胡索钱半、酒炒炙甘草八分，引用建莲子七粒去心、红枣二枚。

賈蓉看了，說：“高明的很。Jia Rong looked it over and said, "Most brilliant indeed.還要請教先生，這病與性命終久有妨無妨？”先生笑道：“大爺是最高明的人。"May I also ask you, sir, whether this illness will in the end endanger her life or not?" The doctor smiled and said, "You, sir, are a most perceptive man.人病到這個地位，非一朝一夕的症候，吃了這藥也要看醫緣了。"When a person's illness has reached this stage, it is not a matter of one morning or one evening; even after taking this medicine, it will still depend on her fated affinity with medical treatment."依小弟看來，今年一冬是不相干的。"In my humble opinion, this coming winter will present no danger."總是過了春分，就可望全愈了。”賈蓉也是個聰明人，也不往下細問了。"Only once the spring equinox has passed can we hope for a full recovery." Jia Rong, too, being a clever man, did not press further with detailed questions.于是賈蓉送了先生去了，方將這藥方子并脈案都給賈珍看了，說的話也都回了賈珍并尤氏了。Thereupon Jia Rong saw the doctor off, and only then did he show both the prescription and the case notes on her pulse to Jia Zhen, and also reported everything that had been said to Jia Zhen and to You-shi.尤氏向賈珍說道：“從來大夫不象他說的這麼痛快，想必用的藥也不錯。”賈珍道：“人家原不是混飯吃久慣行醫的人。You-shi said to Jia Zhen, "Never before has a doctor spoken so decisively and clearly as this one — surely the medicine he uses will not be wrong either." Jia Zhen said, "This man is certainly not one of those who practice medicine merely to make a living, long accustomed to the trade.因為馮紫英我們好，他好容易求了他來了。"It was only because Feng Ziying is on good terms with us that he, with great difficulty, managed to entreat him to come.既有這個人，媳婦的病或者就能好了。"Since we have such a man now, our daughter-in-law's illness may perhaps be cured.他那方子上有人參，就用前日買的那一斤好的罷。”賈蓉聽畢話，方出來叫人打藥去煎給秦氏吃。"Since his prescription calls for ginseng, let us just use that pound of good ginseng bought the other day." When Jia Rong had heard all this, he then went out and had someone prepare and decoct the medicine to give to Qin-shi to drink.不知秦氏服了此藥病勢如何，下回分解。We do not yet know how Qin-shi's condition fared after taking this medicine; that will be told in the next chapter.
