The Fortunate Pray for Yet More Fortune; The Passionate Grow Ever More Passionate

As Baoyu stood there in a daze, Daiyu unexpectedly tossed her handkerchief at him; it struck him squarely in the eye and gave him such a start that he asked who had done it.:“Lin Daiyu shook her head and said with a smile, “I beg your pardon—it slipped from my hand.。”Sister Bao wanted to see the silly goose, so I was pointing it out to her, and the handkerchief slipped.” Baoyu rubbed his eye, wanting to say something but finding it awkward to do so.

Presently Fengjie arrived, and when the subject arose of the thanksgiving rites to be held at Qingxu Temple on the first, she invited Baochai, Baoyu, Daiyu, and the others to go and see the plays.:“Baochai laughed. “No, no—it is dreadfully hot.。”:“What play is there that I have not seen? I shall not go.” Fengjie said, “It is cool there, and there are galleries on both sides. If we are going, I shall send men ahead a few days beforehand to clear out all the Daoist priests, sweep the galleries clean, and hang curtains; not a single outsider will be allowed into the temple. Then it will be pleasant.I have already spoken to Madam; if none of you go, I shall go by myself.I have been terribly bored these past few days.。”When plays are performed at home, I never get to sit down and watch them in comfort.”

:“。”:“When Grandmother Jia heard this, she laughed. “In that case, I shall go with you.” Fengjie laughed when she heard this. “If our Old Ancestress is going too, so much the better!。”:“?”:“。”:“Only then I shall have no chance to enjoy myself again.” Grandmother Jia said, “Tomorrow I shall sit in the main gallery and you in the side gallery. You need not come over to wait upon me and observe the formalities. How would that be?” Fengjie laughed. “Now that is our Old Ancestress showing how fond she is of me.” Grandmother Jia then said to Baochai, “You must come too, and bring your mother with you.。”On these endless long days, you do nothing but sleep at home.” Baochai had no choice but to consent.

Grandmother Jia also sent someone to invite Aunt Xue and, on the way, to tell Lady Wang that she intended to take the girls with her.:“。”:“。”Lady Wang had already excused herself from going, partly because she was unwell and partly because she had to be prepared in case someone came from Yuanchun. On hearing what Grandmother Jia now proposed, she smiled and said, “How wonderfully high-spirited she is.” She then sent word to the Garden: “Anyone who wants an outing may go with the Old Lady on the first.” When the news spread, the others took it calmly enough; but the maids, who were never allowed beyond the threshold from one day to the next—who among them did not long to go?便Even when their mistresses were too lazy to go, the maids coaxed and urged them by every means until they agreed; thus Li Gongcai and the others all said they would go.Grandmother Jia was more delighted than ever and had long since ordered people to clean and arrange the place; there is no need to recount all the details. To speak only of the first itself: before the gates of the Rongguo Mansion carriages streamed past and horses and attendants crowded together. All the servants and functionaries below, having heard that the Imperial Consort was sponsoring this pious observance and that Grandmother Jia would personally offer incense—and since the first was the opening day of the month and fell moreover near the Duanyang Festival—had every article required prepared in full and all of one uniform kind, on a scale quite unlike ordinary occasions.Presently Grandmother Jia and the others came out.Grandmother Jia rode in an eight-bearer sedan; Li-shi, Fengjie, and Aunt Xue each had a four-bearer sedan; Baochai and Daiyu shared a carriage with a kingfisher-feather canopy, pearl tassels, and eight auspicious emblems; and Yingchun, Tanchun, and Xichun shared a carriage with vermilion wheels and an ornate canopy. Then came Grandmother Jia’s maids Yuanyang, Yingwu, Hupo, and Zhenzhu; Lin Daiyu’s maids Zijuan, Xueyan, and Chunxian; Baochai’s maids Ying’er and Wenxing; Yingchun’s maids Siqi and Xiuju; Tanchun’s maids Shishu and Cuimo; Xichun’s maids Ruhua and Caiping; Aunt Xue’s maids Tongxi and Tonggui, together with Xiangling and Xiangling’s maid Zhen’er; Li-shi’s maids Suyun and Biyue; Fengjie’s maids Ping’er, Feng’er, and Xiaohong; and two of Lady Wang’s maids, Jinchuan and Caiyun, who were also going with Fengjie. The nurses carried Dajie’er and took Qiaojie’er in a separate carriage with two more maids; and when the elderly matrons and nurses from every household and the married women-servants accompanying them outside were added, their dense mass of carriages filled an entire street.Grandmother Jia and the others had already traveled a considerable distance in their sedans, yet those waiting at the gate had still not all taken their seats.:“”,”,”,”,One said, “I will not sit with you”; another, “You are crushing our mistress’s bundle”; from a carriage over there came, “You have rubbed against my flower”; and from this side, “You have broken my fan”—a ceaseless chatter of talk and laughter.:“。”Zhou Rui’s wife walked to and fro saying, “Girls, we are out in the street; people will laugh at us.” Only after she had repeated this twice did things settle down. The full ceremonial procession had opened out at the head, and before long they reached Qingxu Temple.Baoyu rode on horseback before Grandmother Jia’s sedan. The people in the streets stood along both sides. As they approached the temple, bells rang and drums thundered; Daoist Superior Zhang was already waiting beside the road, holding incense and clad in his ceremonial robe, at the head of all the Daoist priests.便Grandmother Jia’s sedan had just passed within the mountain gate when she saw from inside it the clay images of the Gate-Guarding Marshal, the Far-Seeing Eye, the Wind-Listening Ear, the local Earth God, the City God of the district, and the other holy figures, and ordered the bearers to halt.Jia Zhen came forward at the head of the younger members of the clan to receive her.Fengjie knew that Yuanyang and the others were behind and could not arrive in time to support Grandmother Jia, so she alighted from her own sedan and hurried forward to help her.便怀As it happened, a little Daoist of twelve or thirteen, carrying a tube for his scissors and tending the charred candlewicks throughout the temple, was looking for a chance to slip away and hide when he ran headlong into Fengjie’s arms.便:“!”Fengjie raised her hand and struck him across the face, sending the child tumbling head over heels, and cursed, “You wild-bull’s whelp, where the devil are you charging off to?” Without even stopping to pick up his candle scissors, the little Daoist scrambled up and tried to run outside.Just then Baochai and the others were alighting from their carriages, surrounded so closely by old serving-women and married maids that neither wind nor rain could have penetrated their ranks; when they saw a little Daoist come tumbling out, they all shouted, “Catch him, catch him, catch him!!”Beat him, beat him, beat him!”

:“?”Hearing this, Grandmother Jia hurriedly asked, “What has happened?” Jia Zhen hastened out to inquire.:“。”:“Fengjie went forward and took Grandmother Jia’s arm, reporting, “A little Daoist who trims the lamps failed to get out of the way and is now trying to barge through the crowd.” Grandmother Jia said at once, “Quickly, bring the child here, and do not frighten him.Children from humble households are every bit as pampered and indulged; where would he ever have seen such pomp and commotion??”便If he should be frightened, the poor little thing would be truly pitiable; would not his father and mother be distressed beyond measure?” As she spoke, she ordered Jia Zhen to bring him gently before her.Jia Zhen had no choice but to go and pull the child over.Still clutching the candle scissors in one hand, the child knelt on the ground, trembling all over.,“Grandmother Jia ordered Jia Zhen to help him up. “Tell him not to be afraid.。”Ask him how old he is.” The child could not get a single word out.”,:“Grandmother Jia again said, “Poor little thing,” then turned to Jia Zhen. “Brother Zhen, take him away.。”Give him some money to buy fruit, and do not let anyone make trouble for him.” Jia Zhen assented and led him away.Grandmother Jia then took the company through the temple, paying reverence and viewing the sights, level by level.Outside, when the pages saw Grandmother Jia and the others pass through the second mountain gate, they suddenly saw Jia Zhen come out with a little Daoist and order someone to take the boy away, give him several hundred cash, and see that no one troubled him.At this, a household servant hurried forward and led the boy away.

:“?”:“!”Standing on the stone steps, Jia Zhen asked, “Where is the steward?” At his question, all the pages standing below shouted together, “Call the steward!” Lin Zhixiao immediately came running up, straightening his cap with one hand as he approached Jia Zhen.:“Jia Zhen said, “The grounds may be large, but we did not expect so many people today.使使Take the people you need to your own courtyard, and send those you do not need to the other one.西Choose several more young lads and station them at this second gate and the side gates on either side, ready to fetch things and carry messages.。””,”。You do understand, do you not, that today all the young ladies and mistresses are here, and not a single outsider is to be allowed near this place?” Lin Zhixiao hurriedly answered, “I understand,” followed by several more “Yes, sir”s.:“。”:“?”“Off you go,” said Jia Zhen. Then he asked, “Why have I not seen Rong?” Before the words were out of his mouth, Jia Rong came running from the bell tower.:“!”Jia Zhen said, “Just look at him! I have not yet dared complain of the heat, and there he is enjoying the cool!” He ordered a servant to spit at him.便The pages all knew Jia Zhen’s usual temper and dared not disobey; one of them therefore stepped forward and spat in Jia Rong’s face.:“!”便:“?”Jia Zhen added, “Question him!” The page asked Jia Rong, “His Lordship is not afraid of the heat; why did you go off to cool yourself first, young master?” Jia Rong stood with his hands lowered and did not dare utter a word. When Jia Yun, Jia Ping, Jia Qin, and the others heard this, not only were they alarmed, but Jia Huang, Jia—, Jia Qiong, and the rest also became anxious and crept slowly forward one by one from along the foot of the wall.:“Jia Zhen said to Jia Rong, “What are you standing there for?Mount a horse at once and ride home to tell your mother and the others!。”:“。”:“The Old Lady and the young ladies are all here; tell them to come quickly and attend upon them.” On hearing this, Jia Rong hurried outside, calling repeatedly for a horse while grumbling, “I do not know what they were all doing earlier, but now they choose to pick on me.” At the same time he cursed the boys: “Are your hands tied?。”Can none of you even bring a horse?” He wanted to send a boy in his place, but feared the truth would later come out; having no choice, he went himself, mounted, and rode away, which need not be related further.

:“Now Jia Zhen was just about to withdraw and go inside when he saw Daoist Zhang standing nearby, smiling deferentially. “Strictly speaking, I am not like an outsider and ought to attend upon them within. But because the weather is hot and all the noble young ladies are here, I dare not enter without leave and must ask your instructions.。””,”,”,In case the Old Lady asks for me or wishes to visit some shrine, I had better remain here in attendance.” Jia Zhen knew that although this Daoist Zhang had once been the proxy who entered religious life in place of the Duke of the Rongguo house, had been personally styled the “Great Immortal of Illusion” by the late emperor, now held the seal of the Daoist Registry, and had moreover been granted the title “Perfected One Who Comprehends the Ultimate” by the present sovereign—so that princes, dukes, and provincial commanders all addressed him as “Immortal”—he nevertheless dared not treat him lightly. Moreover, Zhang often visited both mansions and had met all their ladies and young mistresses.便:“So, hearing him speak this way, Jia Zhen laughed and said, “We are among ourselves; why say such things?Another word, and I shall pluck out that beard of yours!。”Come inside with me at once.” Daoist Zhang laughed heartily and followed Jia Zhen in.

:“。”:“。”Jia Zhen went before Grandmother Jia, bent respectfully, and said with a smile, “Grandfather Zhang has come in to pay his respects.” Grandmother Jia said at once, “Help him over here.” Jia Zhen hurriedly went to support him and brought him forward.:“Daoist Zhang began with a hearty laugh. “Amitāyus Buddha!Has our Old Ancestress enjoyed good health, happiness, and long life of late?Have all the mistresses and young ladies been blessed with good fortune?。”:“?”:“I have not visited the mansion to pay my respects for some time; the Old Lady’s complexion looks better than ever.” Grandmother Jia smiled. “And how are you, venerable Immortal?” Daoist Zhang replied with a smile, “Thanks to the Old Lady’s boundless blessings and longevity, this humble Daoist remains in good health.Nothing else matters; it is only the young master I have been thinking of. Has he been well? On the twenty-sixth of the fourth month, we celebrated here the holy birthday of the Great King Who Screens Heaven. There were few visitors and everything was very clean, so I invited the young master to come and look around. Why was I told he was not at home?” Grandmother Jia said, “He truly was not at home,” and turned to call Baoyu.:“?”:“。”:“As it happened, Baoyu had gone to relieve himself and had only just returned; he hurried forward and asked, “Are you well, Grandfather Zhang?” Daoist Zhang quickly embraced him and exchanged greetings, then smiled at Grandmother Jia. “The young master has filled out even more.” Grandmother Jia said, “He looks healthy outside, but he is weak within.。”:“And with his father forcing him to study besides, the poor child has literally been driven ill.” Daoist Zhang said, “The other day, in several places, I saw examples of the young master’s calligraphy and poems, and they were extraordinarily fine. Why does his lordship still complain that the young master is not fond enough of study?。”:“稿!”In this humble Daoist’s opinion, he is doing well enough.” Then he sighed. “When I look at the young master’s features and bearing, his speech and every movement—why, he is made from the very same pattern as the old Duke!” As he spoke, tears streamed from both his eyes. At this, Grandmother Jia too could not help but cover her face with tears. “Exactly so. Of all the sons and grandsons I have raised, not one resembles his grandfather; only my Yu’er is like him.”

:“。”:“Daoist Zhang then said to Jia Zhen, “As for the old Duke’s appearance, naturally none of your generation were born in time to see him; I daresay even the Elder Master and Second Master no longer remember it clearly.” With that he laughed loudly again, then said, “The other day, at a certain household, I saw a young lady who is fifteen this year and a remarkably pretty girl.It occurred to me that it is time for the young master to seek a match. As far as this girl’s looks, intelligence, family background, and fortune are concerned, she would make a fitting match. But not knowing the Old Lady’s wishes, this humble Daoist has not dared act presumptuously.。”:“Only after receiving the Old Lady’s instructions would I venture to approach her family.” Grandmother Jia said, “A monk told us before that the child is not destined to marry early, so let us wait until he is a little older before deciding. But keep your ears open now, and never mind whether the family is distinguished or wealthy; so long as the girl’s looks are a match for his, come and tell me.便Even if her family is poor, it would only mean giving them a few taels of silver.。”It is only that good looks and a good disposition are hard to find together.”

:“As she finished, Fengjie said with a laugh, “Grandfather Zhang, you still have not brought the amulet to replace the one our little girl wears.Yet the other day you had the colossal cheek to send someone asking me for apricot-yellow satin!。”:“If I had refused, I was afraid your venerable old face would suffer.” Daoist Zhang laughed heartily. “Look at that—my eyes are so dim that I did not even notice you here, Madam, and I have not thanked you.The amulet has long been ready. I meant to deliver it the other day, but I had not expected Her Highness to sponsor this pious observance, and in the confusion I forgot all about it. It is still lying under consecration before the Buddha.。”殿Let me fetch it.” With that he ran to the main hall and soon returned carrying a tea tray draped with a bright-red sutra cloth of python-patterned satin, on which he presented the amulet.Dajie’er’s nurse accepted the amulet.:“。”:“。”:“Daoist Zhang was about to take Dajie’er in his arms when Fengjie laughed. “You could simply have brought it out in your hand—why carry it on a tray?” Daoist Zhang said, “My hands are not clean; how could I hold it in them? A tray keeps it pure.” Fengjie laughed. “When you suddenly brought out that tray, you gave me quite a fright.。”If I had not known you were bringing an amulet, I should have thought you had come begging alms from us.” Everyone burst into laughter, and even Jia Zhen could not contain himself.:“?”:“Grandmother Jia turned around. “You little monkey! Are you not afraid of going to the tongue-cutting hell below?” Fengjie laughed. “That has nothing to do with us layfolk.!”Why is it, then, that he is always telling me I must accumulate hidden merit or else die young?”

:“。”:“?”:“。”便Daoist Zhang laughed too. “I brought the tray out to serve two purposes, though the second was not to beg alms. I should like to ask the young master to remove his jade so that I may carry it outside and show it to the fellow Daoists who have come from afar, and to my disciples and their disciples.” Grandmother Jia said, “If that is all, why should an old man of your great age run back and forth? Take him out to show them and have him come in again; would that not save trouble?” Daoist Zhang replied, “The Old Lady does not understand. Though this humble Daoist looks over eighty, by the Old Lady’s blessing I remain robust. Besides, there are many people outside and the air is foul; on such a sweltering day the young master, who is unused to it, might breathe in some filthy odor, and that would be far too high a price to pay.” Hearing this, Grandmother Jia ordered Baoyu to take off the Magic Jade and place it on the tray.Daoist Zhang carefully laid it on the python-patterned cloth and carried it out with the utmost reverence.

Meanwhile Grandmother Jia and the others toured the various sights for a while before going upstairs.:“。”:“Presently Jia Zhen came to report, “Grandfather Zhang has brought the jade back.” He had barely spoken when Daoist Zhang approached carrying the tray and said with a smile, “Through this humble Daoist’s good offices, everyone has now seen the young master’s jade and found it truly wondrous. They had nothing suitable with which to offer their congratulations, so each has presented one of the ritual objects passed down in his own Daoist lineage as a congratulatory gift.便。”穿Even if the young master finds them nothing rare, he may keep them in his room as playthings or give them away.” Grandmother Jia looked into the tray and saw gold huang pendants, jade jue rings, charms for “May All Things Fulfil Your Wishes” and “Peace Year After Year,” all strung with pearls and precious stones or carved in jade and inlaid with gold—some thirty or fifty pieces in all.:“She said, “You have been behaving absurdly.。”:“Where would these poor men who have left the world find such things? There was no need for this; we cannot accept them.” Daoist Zhang smiled. “This is but a token of their reverence, and this humble Daoist could not prevent them.。”If the Old Lady will not keep them, will it not make them think this humble Daoist a man of little standing, unworthy to have come from your household?” Only after hearing this did Grandmother Jia order someone to accept them.:“。”:“。”:“西Baoyu said with a smile, “Grandmother, since Grandfather Zhang puts it this way, we cannot very well refuse them; but these things are of no use to me. Why not have the boys carry them outside with me and distribute them among the poor?” Grandmother Jia smiled. “That makes sense.” Daoist Zhang hurriedly objected, “The young master’s charitable intention is admirable, but though these objects may not be very rare, they are still crafted articles.西If they are given to beggars, they will do them no good, and the objects themselves will only be spoiled.。”便If you wish to give alms to the poor, why not distribute money among them instead?” On hearing this, Baoyu ordered the objects put away and decided to give out money that evening.退After saying this, Daoist Zhang withdrew.

Grandmother Jia and the company then went upstairs and took their seats in the main gallery.Fengjie and the others occupied the east gallery.西The maids stayed in the west gallery and took turns attending their mistresses.:“》。”“《?”:“Presently Jia Zhen came to report, “The first play drawn before the deity is The White Serpent.” Grandmother Jia asked, “What story is The White Serpent?” Jia Zhen replied, “It begins with Gaozu of Han slaying the serpent and launching his rise to power. :“The second play is A Bed Full of Ceremonial Tablets.” Grandmother Jia laughed. “So that one comes second?Very well, then.。”:“》。”便If this is what the gods and Buddhas desire, we can only accept it.” She then asked about the third play, and Jia Zhen answered, “The third is The Dream of Nanke.” On hearing this, Grandmother Jia said nothing.退Jia Zhen withdrew and went outside to prepare for presenting the memorial, burning the spirit-money and provisions, and beginning the performance; there is no need to relate these matters further.

Now Baoyu was upstairs, seated beside Grandmother Jia. He had a young maid hold the tray of congratulatory gifts just presented, and, wearing his own jade, rummaged through the things with his hands, picking them out one by one to show Grandmother Jia. :“。”:“。”:“。”:“。” 便Grandmother Jia noticed a kingfisher-feathered qilin of pure gold, picked it up, and said with a smile, “This looks like something I have seen some family’s child wearing.” Baochai smiled and said, “Cousin Shi has one, though hers is a little smaller.” Grandmother Jia said, “Yes, Yun’er has one of these.” Baoyu said, “She stays with us so often, yet I have never seen it.” Tanchun laughed and said, “Sister Bao is observant; she remembers everything, whatever it may be.” Lin Daiyu sneered, “Her attention to other things may have its limits, but she takes particular notice of what people wear.” Hearing this, Baochai turned away and pretended not to have heard. When Baoyu heard that Shi Xiangyun possessed such a thing, he promptly picked up the qilin and slipped it into his clothes. At the same time, he feared that people might notice he was keeping it only because he had heard that Shi Xiangyun had one; so although he held it concealed in his hand, his eyes darted about to see who was watching. No one else seemed to pay him much attention, but Lin Daiyu was looking at him and nodding, as though in admiration.:“西穿。”:“。”:“。”Baoyu at once felt embarrassed. Taking it out again, he smiled at Daiyu and said, “This is rather a pretty trinket. I’ll keep it for you, and when we get home you can string it and wear it.” Lin Daiyu turned her head away and said, “I don’t care for it.” Baoyu laughed and said, “If you truly don’t care for it, I suppose I must keep it myself.” With that, he tucked it away again.:“。”:“。”西He was just about to speak when Jia Zhen’s wife and Jia Rong’s wife arrived, mother-in-law and daughter-in-law together. After greetings had been exchanged, Grandmother Jia said, “What have you come for too? I only came out for a little diversion, since I had nothing else to do.” Before she had finished speaking, someone announced, “People have come from General Feng’s household.” It turned out that Feng Ziying’s family, having heard that the Jia household was holding a Daoist service at the temple, had hastily prepared pigs, sheep, incense, candles, tea-money, and other gifts and sent them over.:“When Xifeng heard, she hurried to the main upper hall, clapped her hands, and cried with a laugh, “Oh dear!I never guarded against this.I thought we ladies were merely coming here for a little outing, but everyone thinks we have set up a grand altar and is sending gifts. This is all the Old Lady’s doing.。”Now we shall have to prepare gratuities for the messengers.” She had scarcely spoken when two stewardesses from the Feng household came upstairs. Before the two women from the Feng household had left, gifts arrived from Vice Minister Zhao as well. Then, one after another, all who heard that the Jia household was holding a Daoist service and that its ladies were at the temple—distant relations, close friends, and families with long-standing connections—came to present gifts.:“。”便便Only then did Grandmother Jia regret the outing. “It is not even a proper religious observance,” she said. “We merely came for a little diversion and never thought about the demands of etiquette; we have needlessly put everyone to trouble.” Thus, although they watched plays all day, they returned in the afternoon, and the next day she had no inclination to go again.:“Xifeng said, “Even knocking down a wall counts as breaking ground. Since we have already stirred everyone up, we may as well enjoy another outing today.”便But the previous day Daoist Zhang had raised the matter of arranging a marriage for Baoyu. Who could have known that Baoyu would be miserable all day, then return home in a temper, furious with Daoist Zhang for proposing a match, and repeatedly declare that he would never see him again? No one else knew the reason. Moreover, Lin Daiyu had suffered heatstroke after returning home the day before. For these two reasons, Grandmother Jia firmly refused to go.When Xifeng saw that she would not go, she took some people and went by herself, but that need not concern us here.

Now Baoyu, seeing that Lin Daiyu was ill again, could not put her out of his mind. He had no appetite even for his meals and came repeatedly to inquire after her.:“?”:“。”Lin Daiyu, fearing that something might happen to him, said, “Why don’t you go and watch the plays? What are you doing at home?” Baoyu had been deeply upset since Daoist Zhang proposed a match the day before, and when he heard Lin Daiyu speak so, he thought, “Others may be forgiven for not knowing my heart, but now even she is mocking me.” His vexation consequently became a hundred times worse than usual.:“Had anyone else said it, he would never have lost his temper; but coming from Lin Daiyu, these words were wholly different from the same words spoken by another. He could not help letting his face fall at once and saying, “I have known you all this time for nothing.!” 便:“?”Enough, enough!” Hearing this, Lin Daiyu gave two cold laughs. “I know too that you have known me for nothing. How could I compare with someone who is a fitting match for you?” At this, Baoyu stepped forward until he was directly before her face and demanded, “When you say that, do you deliberately mean to curse me to destruction by Heaven and Earth?” For a moment Lin Daiyu could not make sense of what he meant.:“Baoyu continued, “Only yesterday I swore oath after oath about this, yet today you insist on saying such a thing again.便?”Even if Heaven and Earth destroyed me, what good would it do you?” Only upon hearing this did Lin Daiyu recall what had been said the other day.便:“She realized that today it was she who had spoken wrongly; anxious and ashamed, she said tremblingly, “If I deliberately meant to curse you, may Heaven and Earth destroy me too.Why must it come to this?。”I know what it is: Daoist Zhang proposed a match yesterday, and you are angry because you fear I shall spoil your fine marriage, so you have come to vent your temper on me.” Now Baoyu had from childhood been born with a foolish, unworthy obsession. Moreover, he and Daiyu had grown up in the closest intimacy, their feelings answering one another. As he gradually came to understand the ways of the world, and read those heterodox books and outlandish tales, he saw among all the gifted and accomplished young ladies of the families of distant relations and close friends not one who could approach Lin Daiyu in the least. Thus he had long harbored a certain feeling, but could not easily put it into words, and so, whether pleased or angry, continually devised every possible means of sounding her out in secret.Lin Daiyu, for her part, happened to suffer from a similar foolish obsession and likewise always tested him with feigned feelings. Thus you hid your true heart and showed only false intent, while I hid my true heart and showed only false intent; and when two pretenses meet in this way, some truth must eventually emerge.Amid all the petty complications between them, quarrels were scarcely avoidable.:“At this very moment, Baoyu was thinking, “Others may be forgiven for not knowing my heart, but can it be that even you do not realize that there is no one but you in my heart or before my eyes?Instead of sharing my distress, you use such words to mock and rebuff me.。”Plainly, though you are in my heart every moment of every hour, there is no place for me in yours.” Such was the meaning in his heart, but he could not express it aloud.:“Lin Daiyu, meanwhile, was thinking, “Naturally I am in your heart. Despite all this talk of a match between gold and jade, surely you do not value that pernicious notion above me.便’,When I repeatedly mention this ‘gold and jade,’ you ought to remain perfectly composed, as though you had heard nothing; only then would it be clear that you value me deeply and have no such thought at all.’,。”Why, then, do you become agitated the moment I mention the ‘gold and jade’? That proves it is always in your mind; and when I bring it up, you fear I will grow suspicious, so you deliberately become angry to fool me.”

It appears that the two of them originally shared one heart; but each created needless complications and thereby turned it into two.:“便Baoyu was thinking further, “Nothing about myself matters to me, provided you are content; I would willingly die for you this instant.。”:“Whether you know this or not, if only I may follow my own heart, it will show that you are close to me and not distant.” Lin Daiyu, meanwhile, was thinking, “You should look to yourself. If you are well, I am well; why must you lose control of yourself on my account?Do you not understand that when you lose yourself, I lose myself as well?。”Clearly it is you who will not let me come close, but deliberately make me keep my distance.” Thus, though both wished only for closeness, they gave the impression of estrangement.Such thoughts had long lain privately in both their hearts and cannot all be recounted.

We shall now describe only their outward behavior.便:“!”When Baoyu heard her speak the three words “fine marriage,” they offended him still more. He choked with emotion and could not speak; in a fit of pique he tore the Jade of Spiritual Understanding from his neck, clenched his teeth, and hurled it savagely to the floor, crying, “What worthless rubbish! I’ll smash you and have done with it!” But the jade happened to be extraordinarily hard, and though dashed down once, it remained utterly unscathed.便西When Baoyu saw that it had not broken, he turned to look for something with which to smash it.:“Seeing him behave so, Lin Daiyu had already begun to weep. “Why must you do this?” she said. “Why smash that dumb, unfeeling object?。”If you must smash something, you may as well smash me.” As the two continued their quarrel, Zijuan, Xueyan, and the others hurried over to reason with them.Later, seeing Baoyu exert all his strength to smash the jade, they rushed forward to wrest it from him. When they could not get it away and saw that the commotion was worse than ever before, they had no choice but to summon Xiren.Xiren hurried over and at last took it from him.:“西!”Baoyu sneered, “I am smashing my own property—what concern is it of yours?”

便:“?”Xiren saw that rage had turned his face yellow and distorted his features; never had she seen him so angry. Taking his hand, she said with a smile, “If you quarrel with Miss Lin, there is no need to take it out on the jade. If you were to break it, how could she ever bear it in her heart or hold up her head before others?” Lin Daiyu, weeping all the while, heard these words strike directly at what was in her heart. Seeing that Baoyu understood her less well even than Xiren did, she became still more distressed and burst into louder sobs.便,”Overcome with distress, she could not keep down the fragrant-rue draught she had just taken to relieve the heat; with a retch, she vomited it all up.Zijuan hurried forward and caught it in her handkerchief, which was soon soaked through as Daiyu vomited mouthful after mouthful.Xueyan hastened over to pat her back.:“Zijuan said, “However angry you may be, Miss, you must still take care of yourself. You had only just improved after taking your medicine, and now a quarrel with Master Bao has made you vomit it up again.?”If it brings on your illness, how will Master Bao ever bear it?” Hearing these words, Baoyu felt that they expressed exactly what was in his own heart, and saw that Daiyu understood him less well even than Zijuan did.He also saw Lin Daiyu’s face flushed and her head throbbing, weeping and gasping for breath, covered at once in tears and sweat, too frail to endure it.At the sight, Baoyu regretted having argued the point with her just now; she was in such a state, yet there was nothing he could do to suffer in her place. As he thought this, he could not keep his own tears from falling.Seeing the two of them weep, Xiren could not help feeling heartsick as she remained beside Baoyu. Finding his hand icy cold, she wanted to urge him to stop crying; yet she feared, on the one hand, that some grievance might remain stifled in his heart, and, on the other, that she might seem to slight Lin Daiyu. It seemed better to let everyone have a good cry and thereby release the matter, so she too began to shed tears. While cleaning up the vomited medicine, Zijuan gently fanned Lin Daiyu. Seeing the three of them utterly silent, each weeping alone, she too was overcome with sorrow and took out her handkerchief to wipe her tears. The four of them faced one another and wept without a word.

After a while, Xiren forced a smile and said to Baoyu, “Even if you consider nothing else, just look at the tassel threaded through this jade; for its sake alone, you should not have quarreled with Miss Lin.” Hearing this, Lin Daiyu disregarded her illness, hurried over and snatched the jade away, then seized a pair of scissors and made to cut the tassel.Xiren and Zijuan had only just moved to stop her when she had already cut it into several pieces.:“Lin Daiyu cried, “All my work was wasted. :“。”:“。”He does not care for it anyway. Someone else will make him a better one.” Xiren quickly took back the jade and said, “Why must it come to this? It was my fault for speaking out of turn.” Baoyu said to Lin Daiyu, “Cut as much as you like. In any case I shall not wear it, so it makes no difference.”

They were wholly absorbed in the commotion inside, never suspecting that the old serving-women, having seen Lin Daiyu weep and vomit so violently and Baoyu try to smash his jade, did not know how far matters might go. Fearing that they themselves might be implicated, the women all went to the front and reported the affair to Grandmother Jia and Lady Wang, so that no blame could attach to them.便When Grandmother Jia and Lady Wang saw them come bustling in to report the matter as though it were something grave, neither knew what great disaster had occurred; together they entered the Garden to see the two young cousins.Xiren was so anxious that she reproached Zijuan for alarming the Old Lady and Her Ladyship, while Zijuan, supposing that Xiren had made the report, reproached Xiren in turn.便!”When Grandmother Jia and Lady Wang entered, they found Baoyu silent and Lin Daiyu speechless. Questioning them revealed no real cause, so they shifted the blame onto Xiren and Zijuan, saying, “Why did you not attend to them properly? Now that they have started quarreling, you do nothing at all!” They then scolded and lectured the two maids at length.Neither maid had anything to say and could only listen.Only when Grandmother Jia took Baoyu away did matters finally settle down.

Another day passed, and on the third of the month it was Xue Pan’s birthday. His household laid on a feast and theatrical performances and invited everyone from the Jia household.Because Baoyu had offended Lin Daiyu, the two had still not seen one another. He was full of remorse and utterly dispirited; how could he have any heart for watching plays? He therefore pleaded illness and did not go.:“Lin Daiyu had merely been affected by a little oppressive summer heat the day before and was not seriously ill. When she heard that he was not going, she thought, “He loves drinking and watching plays, yet today he refuses to go; naturally it is because yesterday’s quarrel has upset him.Or else, seeing that I am not going, he has no heart to go either. But of all the things I ought not to have done yesterday, I ought never to have cut the tassel from his jade. He is sure never to wear it again unless I restring it for him.” She therefore regretted her action deeply.

When Grandmother Jia saw that they were both angry, she had thought they would meet at the performance today and all would be well; she had never expected both of them to stay away.:“The old lady complained in exasperation, “What evil debt from a former life has made an old bane like me encounter these two heedless little banes? Not a day passes without their making me worry.,‘’。It is just as the proverb says: ‘Those who are not fated adversaries never come together.’If only I could close my eyes and breathe my last! Then these two banes could quarrel all the way to Heaven; what the eye does not see, the heart does not grieve over, and that would be the end of it.。”Yet perversely, I still cannot breathe this last breath.” As she complained, she too began to weep. These words reached the ears of Baoyu and Lin Daiyu. As it happened, neither of them had ever heard the proverb “Those who are not fated adversaries never come together.” Now that they had suddenly learned it, they pondered its meaning with lowered heads, like initiates meditating upon a Zen riddle, and both began unwittingly to weep.Though they did not meet, one shed tears to the wind in Xiaoxiang Lodge, while the other sighed at the moon in Happy Red Court: were they not two people dwelling apart, yet moved by a single heart?

:“Xiren urged Baoyu, “You really must not behave this way. It was all your fault. In the past, whenever the young male servants quarreled with their sisters, or husbands and wives had disputes, you would hear of it and call the men fools for failing to understand the feelings of women.Yet today you have behaved in just the same way.The day after tomorrow is the fifth, a great festival; if you two are still acting like enemies, the Old Lady will become even angrier, and the whole household will certainly be thrown into turmoil.。”If you take my advice, you will properly humble yourself and apologize. Then everyone can be as before, and all will be well for one and all.” Whether Baoyu accepted her advice remains unknown; to learn what followed, listen to the explanation in the next chapter.

What it’s about

The Jia household visits the Qingxu Abbey for a grand Daoist rite. Crowds, gifts and theatrical bustle surround the Lady Dowager, and the abbot Zhang proposes a marriage for Baoyu. She refuses to choose by wealth or rank and says only that the girl must suit him, yet the proposal sharpens every listener's awareness that his marriage is approaching. Zhang also presents a golden unicorn resembling one Shi Xiangyun owns, adding another object that seems capable of generating a predestined match.

At home Baoyu and Daiyu quarrel with unusual violence. Each wants the other to understand an exclusive devotion that neither can state before the family; every test of sincerity is heard as proof of doubt. Baoyu smashes his jade, Daiyu cuts its tassel and both become ill with grief. Xifeng finally drags them together with jokes, but their reconciliation does not solve the marriage question that produced the panic. The more deeply they trust their private bond, the more fiercely they react to public signs—gold, jade, unicorns and proposals—that deny them control over it.

When it was written 背景

The abbey outing displays religion as elite patronage, public spectacle and a marketplace of auspicious signs. The Lady Dowager's apparently liberal standard for Baoyu's bride still leaves the choice with elders, not with him. Readers should resist treating each matching object as a definitive prophecy: the novel shows characters and communities creating pressure by interpreting coincidences. The cousins' quarrel is painful because their repeated language circles a truth etiquette prevents them from declaring. Baoyu's attack on the jade rejects both the supernatural destiny attached to him and the household's use of that destiny in marriage politics, but the indispensable stone cannot simply be discarded.
