第百十六回　得通靈幻境悟仙緣　送慈柩故鄉全孝道 Regaining the Jade, Baoyu Grasps His Immortal Destiny; Escorting the Coffin Home, He Fulfills Filial Duty

話說寶玉一聽麝月的話，身往後仰，复又死去，急得王夫人等哭叫不止。The story goes that as soon as Baoyu heard Sheyue's words, he fell back and died again, throwing Lady Wang and the others into such distress that they wept and cried out without pause.麝月自知失言致禍，此時王夫人等也不及說他。Sheyue knew herself that her careless words had brought on this disaster, but Lady Wang and the others had no time now to reproach her.那麝月一面哭著，一面打定主意，心想：“若是寶玉一死，我便自盡跟了他去！”不言麝月心里的事。Sheyue, weeping all the while, made up her mind, thinking: "If Baoyu should die, I will kill myself and follow him!" But we shall say no more of what was in Sheyue's heart.且言王夫人等見叫不回來，赶著叫人出來找和尚救治。Now to speak of Lady Wang and the others: seeing that their calls could not bring him back, they hurriedly sent someone out to find the monk to save him.豈知賈政進內出去時，那和尚已不見了。Who could have known that by the time Jia Zheng went out again, the monk had already vanished.賈政正在詫异，聽見里頭又鬧，急忙進來。Jia Zheng was still marveling at this when he heard another commotion within, and hurried back inside.見寶玉又是先前的樣子，口關緊閉，脈息全無。He saw that Baoyu was in the same state as before, his mouth clamped shut, without a trace of pulse.用手在心窩中一摸，尚是溫熱。Feeling with his hand at the pit of his chest, he found it was still warm.賈政只得急忙請醫灌藥救治。Jia Zheng had no choice but to hurriedly send for a doctor to administer medicine and try to save him.

话说宝玉一听麝月的话，身往后仰，复又死去，急得王夫人等哭叫不止。麝月自知失言致祸，此时王夫人等也不及说他。那麝月一面哭著，一面打定主意，心想：“若是宝玉一死，我便自尽跟了他去！”不言麝月心里的事。且言王夫人等见叫不回来，赶著叫人出来找和尚救治。岂知贾政进内出去时，那和尚已不见了。贾政正在诧异，听见里头又闹，急忙进来。见宝玉又是先前的样子，口关紧闭，脉息全无。用手在心窝中一摸，尚是温热。贾政只得急忙请医灌药救治。

那知那寶玉的魂魄早已出了竅了。Little did they know that Baoyu's soul had already left his body.你道死了不成？Was he then truly dead, you ask?卻原來恍恍惚惚赶到前廳，見那送玉的和尚坐著，便施了禮。It happened that in a dazed and dreamlike state he had hurried to the front hall, where he saw the monk who had brought back the jade sitting there, and made a bow of greeting.那知和尚站起身來，拉著寶玉就走。Who would have thought that the monk rose to his feet, took hold of Baoyu, and set off walking.寶玉跟了和尚，覺得身輕如葉，飄飄搖搖，也沒出大門，不知從那里走了出來。Baoyu followed the monk, feeling as light as a leaf, drifting and swaying, and without passing through the main gate, found himself outside without knowing how he had got there.行了一程，到了個荒野地方，遠遠的望見一座牌樓，好象曾到過的。After walking some distance, they came to a wild, deserted place, and in the far distance he saw a memorial archway, which seemed as if he had been there before.正要問那和尚時，只見恍恍惚惚來了一個女人。Just as he was about to ask the monk about it, he saw, dim and indistinct, a woman coming toward them.寶玉心里想道：“這樣曠野地方，那得有如此的麗人，必是神仙下界了。”寶玉想著，走近前來細細一看，竟有些認得的，只是一時想不起來。Baoyu thought to himself: "In such a wild and empty place, how could there be so beautiful a woman? She must be an immortal come down to earth." So thinking, he drew nearer and looked closely, and found her somehow familiar, though for the moment he could not recall who she was.見那女人和和尚打了一個照面就不見了。He saw the woman exchange a glance with the monk, and then she vanished.寶玉一想，竟是尤三姐的樣子，越發納悶：“怎麼他也在這里？”又要問時，那和尚拉著寶玉過了那牌樓，只見牌上寫著“真如福地”四個大字，兩邊一幅對聯，乃是：On reflection, Baoyu realized she had looked exactly like You Sanjie, and grew all the more puzzled: "How can she be here too?" Just as he was about to ask again, the monk pulled Baoyu past the archway, on which were written four large characters, "The Blessed Land of Truth," with a couplet on either side, reading:

那知那宝玉的魂魄早已出了窍了。你道死了不成？却原来恍恍惚惚赶到前厅，见那送玉的和尚坐著，便施了礼。那知和尚站起身来，拉著宝玉就走。宝玉跟了和尚，觉得身轻如叶，飘飘摇摇，也没出大门，不知从那里走了出来。行了一程，到了个荒野地方，远远的望见一座牌楼，好象曾到过的。正要问那和尚时，只见恍恍惚惚来了一个女人。宝玉心里想道：“这样旷野地方，那得有如此的丽人，必是神仙下界了。”宝玉想著，走近前来细细一看，竟有些认得的，只是一时想不起来。见那女人和和尚打了一个照面就不见了。宝玉一想，竟是尤三姐的样子，越发纳闷：“怎么他也在这里？”又要问时，那和尚拉著宝玉过了那牌楼，只见牌上写著“真如福地”四个大字，两边一幅对联，乃是：

假去真來真胜假，無原有是有非無。When the false departs and the true arrives, the true surpasses the false; where there was no origin there is being, and being is not nothingness.

轉過牌坊，便是一座宮門。Passing round the archway, they came to a palace gate.門上橫書四個大字道“福善禍淫”。Across the top of the gate were written four large characters: "Blessings on the Good, Calamity on the Wanton."又有一副對子，大書云：There was also a couplet, written large, which read:

转过牌坊，便是一座宫门。门上横书四个大字道“福善祸淫”。又有一副对子，大书云：

過去未來，莫謂智賢能打破，Of past and future, say not that the wise and worthy can break through them,

过去未来，莫谓智贤能打破，

前因後果，須知親近不相逢。Of cause before and consequence after, know that even those closest to us may never truly meet.

寶玉看了，心下想道：“原來如此。Reading this, Baoyu thought to himself: "So that is how it is.我倒要問問因果來去的事了。”這麼一想，只見鴛鴦站在那里招手兒叫他。"I really must ask about the coming and going of cause and effect." Just as he thought this, he saw Yuanyang standing there, beckoning to him.寶玉想道：“我走了半日，原不曾出園子，怎麼改了樣子了呢？”赶著要和鴛鴦說話，豈知一轉眼便不見了，心里不免疑惑起來。Baoyu thought: "I have been walking half the day, yet I never left the Garden — how has it changed its appearance so?" He hurried to speak with Yuanyang, but in the blink of an eye she vanished, and he could not help feeling puzzled.走到鴛鴦站的地方兒，乃是一溜配殿，各處都有匾額。When he reached the place where Yuanyang had been standing, he found a row of side halls, each with its own inscribed tablet.寶玉無心去看，只向鴛鴦立的所在奔去。Baoyu had no heart to look at them, and ran straight toward the spot where Yuanyang had stood.見那一間配殿的門半掩半開，寶玉也不敢造次進去，心里正要問那和尚一聲，回過頭來，和尚早已不見了。He saw that the door of one side hall stood half open, and not daring to go in rashly, he turned to ask the monk about it — but turning around, he found the monk had already vanished.寶玉恍惚，見那殿宇巍峨，絕非大觀園景象。In his daze, Baoyu saw that the halls rose lofty and grand, utterly unlike the scenery of Grand View Garden.便立住腳，抬頭看那匾額上寫道：“引覺情痴”。He stopped and looked up at the tablet, on which was written: "Leading the Awakening of Passion's Fools."兩邊寫的對聯道：The couplet written on either side read:

宝玉看了，心下想道：“原来如此。我倒要问问因果来去的事了。”这么一想，只见鸳鸯站在那里招手儿叫他。宝玉想道：“我走了半日，原不曾出园子，怎么改了样子了呢？”赶著要和鸳鸯说话，岂知一转眼便不见了，心里不免疑惑起来。走到鸳鸯站的地方儿，乃是一溜配殿，各处都有匾额。宝玉无心去看，只向鸳鸯立的所在奔去。见那一间配殿的门半掩半开，宝玉也不敢造次进去，心里正要问那和尚一声，回过头来，和尚早已不见了。宝玉恍惚，见那殿宇巍峨，绝非大观园景象。便立住脚，抬头看那匾额上写道：“引觉情痴”。两边写的对联道：

喜笑悲哀都是假，貪求思慕總因痴。Joy and laughter, sorrow and grief, are all illusion; craving and longing all arise from foolish attachment.

寶玉看了，便點頭歎息。Reading this, Baoyu nodded and sighed.想要進去找鴛鴦問他是什麼所在，細細想來甚是熟識，便仗著膽子推門進去。He wished to go in and find Yuanyang to ask what place this was; thinking it over carefully, it seemed very familiar indeed, so summoning his courage, he pushed open the door and went in.滿屋一瞧，并不見鴛鴦，里頭只是黑漆漆的，心下害怕。Looking about the whole room, he found no sign of Yuanyang; inside it was pitch dark, and his heart filled with fear.正要退出，見有十數個大櫥，櫥門半掩。Just as he was about to retreat, he saw a dozen or so large cabinets, their doors standing half open.

宝玉看了，便点头叹息。想要进去找鸳鸯问他是什么所在，细细想来甚是熟识，便仗著胆子推门进去。满屋一瞧，并不见鸳鸯，里头只是黑漆漆的，心下害怕。正要退出，见有十数个大橱，橱门半掩。

寶玉忽然想起：“我少時做夢曾到過這個地方。Baoyu suddenly remembered: "When I was young I once came to this very place in a dream.如今能夠親身到此，也是大幸。”恍惚間，把找鴛鴦的念頭忘了。"Now that I am able to come here in person, it is truly a stroke of great fortune." In his dazed state he forgot all about looking for Yuanyang.便壯著膽把上首的大櫥開了櫥門一瞧，見有好幾本冊子，心里更覺喜歡，想道：“大凡人做夢，說是假的，豈知有這夢便有這事。Summoning his courage, he opened the door of the large cabinet at the head of the row and looked in, finding several albums inside, which delighted him all the more. He thought: "People generally say dreams are false, but who would have known that where there is such a dream, there is also such a reality.我常說還要做這個夢再不能的，不料今兒被我找著了。"I have often said I wished to have this dream again but never could — yet who would have thought that today I should find it here.但不知那冊子是那個見過的不是？”伸手在上頭取了一本，冊上寫著“金陵十二釵正冊”。"But I wonder whether these are the very albums I once saw?" He reached up and took one down; on its cover was written "The Principal Register of the Twelve Beauties of Jinling."寶玉拿著一想道：“我恍惚記得是那個，只恨記不得清楚。”便打開頭一頁看去，見上頭有畫，但是畫跡模糊，再瞧不出來。Holding it, Baoyu thought: "I have some hazy memory of this very thing, only I am vexed that I cannot recall it clearly." He opened it to the first page and looked; there was a painting on it, but the lines were so blurred that he could make nothing out.後面有幾行字跡也不清楚，尚可摹擬，便細細的看去，見有什麼“玉帶”，上頭有個好象“林”字，心里想道：“不要是說林妹妹罷？”便認真看去，底下又有“金簪雪里”四字，詫异道”怎麼又象他的名字呢。”复將前後四句合起來一念道：“也沒有什麼道理，只是暗藏著他兩個名字，并不為奇。Below it a few lines of writing were likewise unclear, though he could still make them out roughly, and looking carefully he saw something like "jade belt," above which was a character that looked like "Lin." He thought to himself: "Could this not be about Cousin Lin?" Looking still more closely, below that were the four characters "gold hairpin in the snow," and he exclaimed in surprise, "How does this too resemble her name?" He then read the four lines together from beginning to end and thought: "There is no real sense to be made of it — it is simply that her two names are hidden within it, which is nothing so strange.獨有那‘怜’字‘歎’字不好。"Only those words 'pity' and 'lament' bode ill.這是怎麼解？”想到那里，又自啐道：“我是偷著看，若只管呆想起來，倘有人來，又看不成了。”遂往後看去，也無暇細玩那圖畫，只從頭看去。"How is this to be explained?" But even as he thought this, he spat at himself in reproach: "I am looking at this in secret — if I keep standing here lost in thought, and someone should come, I shall not get to see any more of it." So he went on turning the pages, with no time to study the pictures closely, and simply read on from the beginning.看到尾兒有幾句詞，什麼“相逢大夢歸”一句，便恍然大悟道：“是了，果然机關不爽，這必是元春姐姐了。Reaching the end he found a few lines of verse, among them the line "They meet again when the great dream returns," and suddenly he understood: "So that is it — the workings of fate indeed never miss their mark. This must be Cousin Yuanchun.若都是這樣明白，我要抄了去細玩起來，那些姊妹們的壽夭窮通沒有不知的了。"If they are all as clear as this, I should copy them down and study them carefully — then there would be nothing left unknown to me of my cousins' fates, whether long life or short, poverty or fortune.我回去自不肯泄漏，只做一個未卜先知的人，也省了多少閒想。”又向各處一瞧，并沒有筆硯，又恐人來，只得忙著看去。"When I go back I shall certainly not reveal it to anyone, but simply become a man who knows the future without divining it — that would save so much idle worry." He glanced about on every side, but there was no brush or inkstone to be found, and fearing someone might come, he could only hurry on with his reading.只見圖上影影有一個放風箏的人兒，也無心去看。He saw dimly in a picture the figure of someone flying a kite, but had no heart to look at it closely.急急的將那十二首詩詞都看遍了。In great haste he read through all twelve poems.也有一看便知的，也有一想便得的，也有不大明白的，心下牢牢記著。Some he understood at a glance, some he grasped after a moment's thought, and some he could not make out clearly at all — but he fixed them firmly in his memory.一面歎息，一面又取那《金陵又副冊》一看，看到“堪羡优伶有福，誰知公子無緣”先前不懂，見上面尚有花席的影子，便大驚痛哭起來。Sighing as he went, he took up the "Supplementary Register of Jinling" to look at it as well, and came upon the lines "How enviable, the actress blessed with fortune; who would have known the young master had no such fate" — which he had not understood before. Seeing above it what looked like the shadow of a flower-strewn mat, he was struck with great alarm and burst into anguished weeping.

待要往後再看，聽見有人說道：“你又發呆了！He was about to read further when he heard someone say: "There you go, lost in a daze again!林妹妹請你呢。”好似鴛鴦的聲氣，回頭卻不見人。"Cousin Lin is asking for you." The voice sounded just like Yuanyang's, but when he turned around there was no one to be seen.心中正自驚疑，忽鴛鴦在門外招手。Just as his heart was filled with alarm and doubt, Yuanyang suddenly appeared beckoning outside the door.寶玉一見，喜得赶出來。The moment Baoyu saw her, he hurried out, overjoyed.但見鴛鴦在前影影綽綽的走，只是赶不上。He saw Yuanyang walking ahead of him, faint and indistinct, but try as he might he could not catch up with her.寶玉叫道：“好姐姐，等等我。”那鴛鴦并不理，只顧前走。Baoyu called out: "Dear sister, wait for me!" But Yuanyang paid him no heed at all, and simply kept walking on ahead.寶玉無奈，盡力赶去，忽見別有一洞天，樓閣高聳，殿角玲瓏，且有好些宮女隱約其間。Having no choice, Baoyu did his utmost to catch up, when suddenly he came upon another world entirely — towers and pavilions rose high, the corners of the halls were exquisitely wrought, and a number of palace maids could be glimpsed moving faintly among them.寶玉貪看景致，竟將鴛鴦忘了。So absorbed was Baoyu in gazing at the scenery that he quite forgot about Yuanyang.寶玉順步走入一座宮門，內有奇花异卉，都也認不明白。Following his steps, Baoyu walked into a palace gate, within which were strange and wondrous flowers and plants, none of which he could clearly recognize.惟有白石花闌圍著一顆青草，葉頭上略有紅色，但不知是何名草，這樣矜貴。There was only, within a balustrade of white stone, a single green plant, its leaf tips faintly tinged with red — he did not know what plant it might be, that it should be held in such honor.只見微風動處，那青草已搖擺不休，雖說是一枝小草，又無花朵，其嫵媚之態，不禁心動神怡，魂消魄喪。He saw that wherever the light breeze stirred, the green plant swayed without ceasing; though it was but a small blade of grass and bore no flowers, there was such charm in its swaying form that he could not help but feel his heart stir, his spirit delight, and his very soul melt away.寶玉只管呆呆的看著，只聽見旁邊有一人說道：“你是那里來的蠢物，在此窺探仙草！”寶玉聽了，吃了一驚，回頭看時，卻是一位仙女，便施禮道：“我找鴛鴦姐姐，誤入仙境，恕我冒昧之罪。Baoyu simply stood there gazing at it in a daze, when he heard someone beside him say: "Where do you come from, foolish creature, that you dare spy upon this immortal herb!" Startled at these words, Baoyu turned to look, and found it was a fairy maiden. He bowed at once and said: "I was looking for my sister Yuanyang and wandered by mistake into this immortal realm — forgive me the offense of my intrusion.請問神仙姐姐，這里是何地方？"May I ask, immortal sister, what place this is?怎麼我鴛鴦姐姐到此還說是林妹妹叫我？"And how is it that when my sister Yuanyang led me here, she still said Cousin Lin was calling for me?望乞明示。”那人道：“誰知你的姐姐妹妹，我是看管仙草的，不許凡人在此逗留。”寶玉欲待要出來，又舍不得，只得央告道：“神仙姐姐既是那管理仙草的，必然是花神姐姐了。"I beg you to enlighten me." The maiden said: "How should I know anything of your sisters and cousins? I am the keeper of this immortal herb, and mortals are not permitted to linger here." Baoyu wished to withdraw, yet could not bear to, and so he pleaded: "Since you, immortal sister, are the one who tends this immortal herb, you must surely be the Flower Goddess.但不知這草有何好處？”那仙女道：“你要知道這草，說起來話長著呢。"But I wonder, what virtue does this herb possess?" The fairy maiden said: "If you wish to know about this herb, it is a long story indeed.那草本在靈河岸上，名曰絳珠草。"This herb originally grew on the bank of the River of Souls, and was called the Crimson Pearl Herb.因那時萎敗，幸得一個神瑛侍者日以甘露灌溉，得以長生。"Because it was then withering away, it was fortunate enough to have an Attendant Shenying water it daily with sweet dew, and so it was able to live on.後來降凡歷劫，還報了灌溉之恩，今返歸真境。"Later it descended into the mortal world to live through its karmic trials, repaid the debt of that watering, and has now returned to the realm of truth.所以警幻仙子命我看管，不令蜂纏蝶戀。”寶玉聽了不解，一心疑定必是遇見了花神了，今日斷不可當面錯過，便問：“管這草的是神仙姐姐了。"That is why the Fairy Disenchantment ordered me to guard it, and not allow bees and butterflies to linger about it in longing." Baoyu, hearing this, did not understand it, but felt certain in his heart that he must have met the Flower Goddess, and thought he must by no means let this chance slip by unused. So he asked: "You, immortal sister, are the one who tends this herb.還有無數名花必有專管的，我也不敢煩問，只有看管芙蓉花的是那位神仙？”那仙女道：“我卻不知，除是我主人方曉。”寶玉便問道：“姐姐的主人是誰？”那仙女道：“我主人是瀟湘妃子。”寶玉聽道：“是了，你不知道這位妃子就是我的表妹林黛玉。”那仙女道：“胡說。"There must be countless famous flowers each with their own keeper, and I dare not trouble you about all of them — but who is the immortal who tends the hibiscus?" The fairy maiden said: "That I do not know; only my mistress would know." Baoyu then asked: "Who is your mistress, sister?" The fairy maiden said: "My mistress is the Concubine Xiaoxiang." Baoyu, hearing this, said: "Ah, so it is — you do not know that this concubine is none other than my cousin Lin Daiyu." The fairy maiden said: "Nonsense.此地乃上界神女之所，雖號為瀟湘妃子，并不是娥皇女英之輩，何得與凡人有親。"This place is the abode of a goddess of the upper realm. Though she is styled the Concubine Xiaoxiang, she is not of the company of E Huang and Nü Ying — how could she possibly have kinship with a mortal?你少來混說，瞧著叫力士打你出去。”"Do not come here talking such nonsense, or I shall have the warrior spirits drive you out."

待要往后再看，听见有人说道：“你又发呆了！林妹妹请你呢。”好似鸳鸯的声气，回头却不见人。心中正自惊疑，忽鸳鸯在门外招手。宝玉一见，喜得赶出来。但见鸳鸯在前影影绰绰的走，只是赶不上。宝玉叫道：“好姐姐，等等我。”那鸳鸯并不理，只顾前走。宝玉无奈，尽力赶去，忽见别有一洞天，楼阁高耸，殿角玲珑，且有好些宫女隐约其间。宝玉贪看景致，竟将鸳鸯忘了。宝玉顺步走入一座宫门，内有奇花异卉，都也认不明白。惟有白石花阑围著一颗青草，叶头上略有红色，但不知是何名草，这样矜贵。只见微风动处，那青草已摇摆不休，虽说是一枝小草，又无花朵，其妩媚之态，不禁心动神怡，魂消魄丧。宝玉只管呆呆的看著，只听见旁边有一人说道：“你是那里来的蠢物，在此窥探仙草！”宝玉听了，吃了一惊，回头看时，却是一位仙女，便施礼道：“我找鸳鸯姐姐，误入仙境，恕我冒昧之罪。请问神仙姐姐，这里是何地方？怎么我鸳鸯姐姐到此还说是林妹妹叫我？望乞明示。”那人道：“谁知你的姐姐妹妹，我是看管仙草的，不许凡人在此逗留。”宝玉欲待要出来，又舍不得，只得央告道：“神仙姐姐既是那管理仙草的，必然是花神姐姐了。但不知这草有何好处？”那仙女道：“你要知道这草，说起来话长著呢。那草本在灵河岸上，名曰绛珠草。因那时萎败，幸得一个神瑛侍者日以甘露灌溉，得以长生。后来降凡历劫，还报了灌溉之恩，今返归真境。所以警幻仙子命我看管，不令蜂缠蝶恋。”宝玉听了不解，一心疑定必是遇见了花神了，今日断不可当面错过，便问：“管这草的是神仙姐姐了。还有无数名花必有专管的，我也不敢烦问，只有看管芙蓉花的是那位神仙？”那仙女道：“我却不知，除是我主人方晓。”宝玉便问道：“姐姐的主人是谁？”那仙女道：“我主人是潇湘妃子。”宝玉听道：“是了，你不知道这位妃子就是我的表妹林黛玉。”那仙女道：“胡说。此地乃上界神女之所，虽号为潇湘妃子，并不是娥皇女英之辈，何得与凡人有亲。你少来混说，瞧著叫力士打你出去。”

寶玉聽了發怔，只覺自形穢濁，正要退出，又聽見有人赶來說道：“里面叫請神瑛侍者。”那人道：“我奉命等了好些時，總不見有神瑛侍者過來，你叫我那里請去。”那一個笑道：“才退去的不是么？”那侍女慌忙赶出來說：“請神瑛侍者回來。”寶玉只道是問別人，又怕被人追赶，只得踉蹌而逃。At these words Baoyu stood dumbstruck, feeling himself base and unclean, and was just about to withdraw when he heard someone hurry up saying: "Within, they are calling for the Attendant Shenying." The other replied: "I have been waiting a long while on my orders, but have seen no Attendant Shenying come by at all — where am I to go and summon him?" The first one laughed and said: "Was that not him, just now, going away?" The maid hurried out at once, calling: "Attendant Shenying, please come back!" Baoyu supposed this must be meant for someone else, and fearing to be pursued, could only flee in stumbling haste.正走時，只見一人手提寶劍迎面攔住說：“那里走！”唬得寶玉驚慌無措，仗著膽抬頭一看卻不是別人，就是尤三姐。Just as he was running, he saw someone bearing a precious sword bar his way, saying: "Where do you think you're going!" Baoyu was so terrified he did not know what to do, but summoning his courage he looked up, and found it was none other than You Sanjie.寶玉見了，略定些神，央告道：“姐姐怎麼你也來逼起我來了。”那人道：“你們兄弟沒有一個好人，敗人名節，破人婚姻。Seeing her, Baoyu steadied himself a little and pleaded: "Sister, how is it that you too come to press me so?" She replied: "Not one of you men is any good — you destroy people's good names and ruin their marriages.今兒你到這里，是不饒你的了！”寶玉聽去話頭不好，正自著急，只聽後面有人叫道：“姐姐快快攔住，不要放他走了。”尤三姐道：“我奉妃子之命等侯已久，今兒見了，必定要一劍斬斷你的塵緣。”寶玉聽了益發著忙，又不懂這些話到底是什麼意思，只得回頭要跑。"Now that you have come here today, I shall not let you off!" Baoyu, hearing this ominous turn, was growing more and more alarmed, when he heard someone behind him call out: "Sister, quickly, block his way — do not let him get away!" You Sanjie said: "I have waited long on the concubine's orders, and now that I have found you, I must with one stroke of this sword sever your bond with the mortal world." Hearing this, Baoyu grew ever more frantic, and understanding none of what these words truly meant, could only turn and try to run.豈知身後說話的并非別人，卻是晴雯。Who would have thought that the one who had spoken behind him was none other than Qingwen.寶玉一見，悲喜交集，便說：“我一個人走迷了道兒，遇見仇人，我要逃回，卻不見你們一人跟著我。At the sight of her, Baoyu's grief and joy mingled together, and he said: "I lost my way all alone and met with an enemy — I wanted to run back, but not one of you was there following me.如今好了，晴雯姐姐，快快的帶我回家去罷。”晴雯道：“侍者不必多疑，我非晴雯，我是奉妃子之命特來請你一會，并不難為你。”寶玉滿腹狐疑，只得問道：“姐姐說是妃子叫我，那妃子究是何人？”晴雯道：“此時不必問，到了那里自然知道。”寶玉沒法，只得跟著走。"Now it's all right — Sister Qingwen, quickly take me home." Qingwen said: "Attendant, you need not doubt so much. I am not Qingwen; I have come specially on the concubine's orders to fetch you to an audience, and mean you no harm at all." Baoyu, filled with misgivings, could only ask: "Sister, you say the concubine has summoned me — but who, in the end, is this concubine?" Qingwen said: "There is no need to ask now; once you arrive there, you will know of yourself." Baoyu, having no choice, could only follow along.細看那人背後舉動恰是晴雯，那面目聲音是不錯的了，”怎麼他說不是？Looking closely at the woman's bearing from behind, it was exactly like Qingwen; her face and voice too were unmistakable — "then how can she say she is not?我此時心里模糊。"My mind is all confusion just now.且別管他，到了那邊見了妃子，就有不是，那時再求他，到底女人的心腸是慈悲的，必是恕我冒失。”正想著，不多時到了一個所在。"Well, never mind it for now — once I get there and see the concubine, if there is any fault, I can plead with her then; a woman's heart is compassionate after all, and she is sure to forgive my rashness." Even as he was thinking this, before long they arrived at a certain place.只見殿宇精致，色彩輝煌，庭中一叢翠竹，戶外數本蒼松。He saw halls of exquisite craftsmanship, brilliant in color; in the courtyard a clump of kingfisher-green bamboo, and outside the doors several ancient pines.廊檐下立著幾個侍女，都是宮妝打扮，見了寶玉進來，便悄悄的說道：“這就是神瑛侍者么？”引著寶玉的說道：“就是。Under the eaves of the veranda stood several maidservants, all dressed in palace attire, who upon seeing Baoyu enter, whispered quietly to one another: "Is this the Attendant Shenying?" The one leading Baoyu said: "It is he.你快進去通報罷。”有一侍女笑著招手，寶玉便跟著進去。"Go in quickly and announce him." One maidservant beckoned with a smile, and Baoyu followed her in.過了幾層房舍，見一正房，珠帘高挂。Passing through several courtyards of buildings, he came to a main hall, its pearl curtain hung high.那侍女說：“站著候旨。”寶玉聽了，也不敢則聲，只得在外等著。The maidservant said: "Stand here and await her command." Hearing this, Baoyu did not dare make a sound, and could only wait outside.那侍女進去不多時，出來說：“請侍者參見。”又有一人卷起珠帘。Before long the maidservant went in, then came out and said: "The Attendant is asked to come in for an audience." Another maid rolled up the pearl curtain.只見一女子，頭戴花冠，身穿繡服，端坐在內。He saw a woman, a flower crown upon her head and an embroidered robe upon her body, sitting composed within.寶玉略一抬頭，見是黛玉的形容，便不禁的說道：“妹妹在這里！Baoyu raised his head slightly, and seeing that her features were those of Daiyu, could not help exclaiming: "Cousin, you are here!叫我好想。”那帘外的侍女悄吒道：“這侍者無禮，快快出去。”說猶未了，又見一個侍兒將珠帘放下。"How I have longed for you." The maidservant outside the curtain hissed under her breath: "This attendant is impertinent — out with him at once!" Before she had even finished speaking, another maid let the pearl curtain fall.寶玉此時欲待進去又不敢，要走又不舍，待要問明，見那些侍女并不認得，又被驅逐，無奈出來。At this moment Baoyu wished to go in but dared not, wished to leave but could not bear to; he wanted to ask for a clear explanation, but seeing that none of the maidservants were known to him, and being driven away besides, he had no choice but to come out.心想要問晴雯，回頭四顧，并不見有晴雯。He thought to ask Qingwen, but turning to look about on every side, there was no sign of Qingwen at all.心下狐疑，只得怏怏出來，又無人引著，正欲找原路而去，卻又找不出舊路了。His heart full of doubt, he could only come away in sullen discontent, and with no one now to guide him, just as he wished to find his way back by the road he had come, he found he could no longer make out the old path.正在為難，見鳳姐站在一所房檐下招手。Just as he was at a loss, he saw Xifeng standing under the eaves of a house, beckoning to him.寶玉看見喜歡道：“可好了，原來回到自己家里了。Seeing her, Baoyu was delighted and said: "Good, at last — so I have come back to my own home after all.我怎麼一時迷亂如此。”急奔前來說：“姐姐在這里么，我被這些人捉弄到這個分兒。"How could I have been so confused and bewildered for a time?" He ran up quickly and said: "Are you here, sister? I have been made such a fool of by these people.林妹妹又不肯見我，不知何原故。”說著，走到鳳姐站的地方，細看起來并不是鳳姐，原來卻是賈蓉的前妻秦氏。"And Cousin Lin, too, will not see me — I do not know the reason why." As he spoke, he came to the spot where Xifeng had been standing, but looking closely, it was not Xifeng at all — it turned out to be Qin-shi, the late wife of Jia Rong.寶玉只得立住腳要問“鳳姐姐在那里”，那秦氏也不答言，竟自往屋里去了。Baoyu could only stop in his tracks and ask, "Where is Sister Xifeng?" But Qin-shi made no reply at all, and simply went into the house by herself.寶玉恍恍惚惚的又不敢跟進去，只得呆呆的站著，歎道：“我今兒得了什麼不是，眾人都不理我。”便痛哭起來。Baoyu, still in his daze, did not dare follow her in, and could only stand there blankly, sighing: "What wrong have I done today, that everyone should refuse to acknowledge me?" And he burst into bitter weeping.見有幾個黃巾力士執鞭赶來，說是”何處男人敢闖入我們這天仙福地來，快走出去！”寶玉聽得，不敢言語。He saw several warriors in yellow turbans come running up with whips, saying: "What man is this who dares to trespass into our blessed land of the immortals? Out with him at once!" Hearing this, Baoyu dared not utter a word.正要尋路出來，遠遠望見一群女子說笑前來。Just as he was searching for a way out, he saw far in the distance a group of women approaching, talking and laughing.寶玉看時，又象有迎春等一干人走來，心里喜歡，叫道：“我迷住在這里，你們快來救我！”正嚷著，後面力士赶來。Looking at them, Baoyu saw that they seemed to be Yingchun and the rest of that company, and his heart filled with joy. He called out: "I am lost and trapped here — come quickly and save me!" Even as he was shouting, the warriors came rushing up behind him.寶玉急得往前亂跑，忽見那一群女子都變作鬼怪形像，也來追扑。In his panic Baoyu ran wildly forward, when suddenly he saw that whole group of women turn into the forms of ghosts and demons, and they too came rushing to seize him.

寶玉正在情急，只見那送玉來的和尚手里拿著一面鏡子一照，說道：“我奉元妃娘娘旨意，特來救你。”登時鬼怪全無仍是一片荒郊。Just as Baoyu was in the direst straits, he saw the monk who had brought back the jade holding a mirror, and as he shone it, said: "I have come specially, by order of Her Highness the Imperial Consort Yuan, to save you." At once all the ghosts and demons vanished, and there was once more only a stretch of wild countryside.寶玉拉著和尚說道：“我記得是你領我到這里，你一時又不見了。Baoyu clutched at the monk and said: "I remember it was you who led me here, and then in an instant you vanished.看見了好些親人，只是都不理我，忽又變作鬼怪，到底是夢是真，望老師明白指示。”那和尚道：“你到這里曾偷看什麼東西沒有？”寶玉一想道：“他既能帶我到天仙福地，自然也是神仙了，如何瞞得他。"I saw so many of my kin, only none of them would acknowledge me, and then suddenly they turned into ghosts and demons — is this in the end a dream or is it real? I beg you, Master, to enlighten me clearly." The monk said: "While you were here, did you secretly look at anything?" Baoyu thought to himself: "Since he was able to bring me to this blessed land of the immortals, he must surely be an immortal himself — how could I hide anything from him?況且正要問個明白。”便道：“我倒見了好些冊子來著。”那和尚道：“可又來，你見了冊子還不解么！"Besides, I was just wanting to ask him to make things clear." So he said: "Why, I did see a good many albums there." The monk said: "There you go again — you saw the albums and still do not understand?世上的情緣都是那些魔障。"All the bonds of love and passion in this world are nothing but demonic delusions.只要把歷過的事情細細記著，將來我與你說明。”說著，把寶玉狠命的一推，說：“回去罷！”寶玉站不住腳，一交跌倒，口里嚷道：“阿喲！”"Only remember carefully everything you have lived through, and in time I will explain it all to you." So saying, he gave Baoyu a violent shove, saying: "Go back now!" Baoyu could not keep his footing, and fell sprawling with a cry of "Ai-yo!"

宝玉正在情急，只见那送玉来的和尚手里拿著一面镜子一照，说道：“我奉元妃娘娘旨意，特来救你。”登时鬼怪全无仍是一片荒郊。宝玉拉著和尚说道：“我记得是你领我到这里，你一时又不见了。看见了好些亲人，只是都不理我，忽又变作鬼怪，到底是梦是真，望老师明白指示。”那和尚道：“你到这里曾偷看什么东西没有？”宝玉一想道：“他既能带我到天仙福地，自然也是神仙了，如何瞒得他。况且正要问个明白。”便道：“我倒见了好些册子来著。”那和尚道：“可又来，你见了册子还不解么！世上的情缘都是那些魔障。只要把历过的事情细细记著，将来我与你说明。”说著，把宝玉狠命的一推，说：“回去罢！”宝玉站不住脚，一交跌倒，口里嚷道：“阿哟！”

王夫人等正在哭泣，聽見寶玉蘇來，連忙叫喚。Lady Wang and the others were still weeping when they heard Baoyu revive, and hastened to call out to him.寶玉睜眼看時，仍躺在炕上，見王夫人寶釵等哭的眼泡紅腫。When Baoyu opened his eyes to look, he found himself still lying on the kang, and saw that Lady Wang, Baochai, and the others had wept until their eyelids were swollen red.定神一想，心里說道：“是了，我是死去過來的。”遂把神魂所歷的事呆呆的細想，幸喜多還記得，便哈哈的笑道：“是了，是了。”王夫人只道舊病复發，便好延醫調治，即命丫頭婆子快去告訴賈政，說是”寶玉回過來了，頭里原是心迷住了，如今說出話來，不用備辦後事了。”賈政聽了，即忙進來看視，果見寶玉蘇來，便道：“沒福的痴兒你要唬死誰么！”說著，眼淚也不知不覺流下來了。Steadying his mind and thinking it over, he said to himself: "So it is — I have died and come back to life." He then pondered carefully, lost in thought, over everything his soul had experienced, and to his great relief found that he still remembered most of it, so that he laughed aloud, saying: "That's it, that's it." Lady Wang supposed only that his old illness had recurred, and thinking it well to send for a doctor and have him treated, at once bade the maids and matrons hurry to tell Jia Zheng that "Baoyu has come back to himself; before, it was only that his mind was clouded, and now that he can speak, there is no need to prepare for the funeral." Hearing this, Jia Zheng hurried in at once to see for himself, and finding indeed that Baoyu had revived, said: "You luckless, foolish child, whom are you trying to frighten to death!" And as he spoke, the tears fell from his eyes before he even knew it.又歎了幾口氣，仍出去叫人請醫生診脈服藥。He sighed several times more, and then went out again to have someone summon a doctor to take the pulse and prescribe medicine.這里麝月正思自盡，見寶玉一過來，也放了心。Here, Sheyue had been thinking of ending her own life, but when she saw Baoyu come to, her mind was set at ease.只見王夫人叫人端了桂圓湯叫他喝了幾口，漸漸的定了神。Just then Lady Wang had someone bring longan soup and had him drink a few mouthfuls, and gradually he grew calmer.王夫人等放心，也沒有說麝月，只叫人仍把那玉交給寶釵給他帶上，”想起那和尚來，這玉不知那里找來的，也是古怪。Lady Wang and the others, relieved, said nothing to reproach Sheyue, and simply had someone give the jade back to Baochai to put on him again: "Thinking of that monk, it's strange too — no one knows where he found this jade.怎麼一時要銀一時又不見了，莫非是神仙不成？”寶釵道：“說起那和尚來的蹤跡去的影響，那玉并不是找來的。How is it that one moment he wanted silver and the next moment he vanished — could he actually be an immortal?" Baochai said, "Speaking of that monk's coming and going without a trace, the jade was not really something he found.頭里丟的時候，必是那和尚取去的。”王夫人道：“玉在家里怎麼能取的了去？”寶釵道：“既可送來，就可取去。”襲人麝月道：“那年丟了玉，林大爺測了個字，後來二奶奶過了門，我還告訴過二奶奶，說測的那字是什麼‘賞’字。When it was lost before, it must have been that monk who took it." Lady Wang said, "How could the jade be taken away while it was here at home?" Baochai said, "If it could be delivered here, it could just as well be taken away." Xiren and Sheyue said, "The year the jade was lost, Master Lin did a character divination, and later, after the Second Mistress had married in, I even told her that the character divined was the character 'shang' (賞, 'reward').二奶奶還記得么？”寶釵想道：“是了。Does the Second Mistress still remember?" Baochai thought to herself, "That's it.你們說測的是當舖里找去，如今才明白了，竟是個和尚的‘尚’字在上頭，可不是和尚取了去的么。”王夫人道：“那和尚本來古怪。You all said the divination pointed to searching in a pawnshop, but only now do I understand — it was actually the character 'monk' (尚) sitting on top of it, so wasn't it the monk who took it after all?" Lady Wang said, "That monk was strange from the very start.那年寶玉病的時候，那和尚來說是我們家有寶貝可解，說的就是這塊玉了。That year when Baoyu was ill, that monk came and said our family possessed a treasure that could cure him — he meant this very piece of jade.他既知道，自然這塊玉到底有些來歷。Since he knew of it, this jade must surely have some origin behind it.況且你女婿養下來就嘴里含著的。Besides, your husband was born with it already in his mouth.古往今來，你們聽見過這麼第二個么。From ancient times to now, have you ever heard of a second such thing?只是不知終久這塊玉到底是怎麼著，就連咱們這一個也還不知是怎麼著。It's just that we don't know what will become of this jade in the end — we don't even know what will become of this one of ours.病也是這塊玉，好也是這塊玉，生也是這塊玉——”說到這里忽然住了，不免又流下淚來。His illness was because of this jade, his recovery was because of this jade, his very birth was because of this jade——" Having said this she suddenly stopped, and could not help shedding tears again.寶玉聽了，心里卻也明白，更想死去的事愈加有因，只不言語，心里細細的記憶。Hearing this, Baoyu understood in his heart, and thought all the more that his having died and come back to life must have some deeper cause behind it; he said nothing, but carefully turned it over in his mind.那時惜春便說道：“那年失玉，還請妙玉請過仙，說是‘青埂峰下倚古松’，還有什麼‘入我門來一笑逢’的話，想起來‘入我門’三字大有講究。At that time Xichun said, "The year the jade was lost, we even had Miaoyu invoke a spirit through the planchette, and it said 'Beneath Green Ridge Peak, leaning against an old pine,' and also something like 'Come through my gate and we shall meet with a smile' — thinking about it now, those three words 'enter my gate' hold great meaning.佛教的法門最大，只怕二哥不能入得去。”寶玉聽了，又冷笑幾聲。The gate of the Buddhist teaching is the greatest of all — I'm afraid Second Brother may not be able to enter it." Hearing this, Baoyu gave a few cold laughs.寶釵聽了，不覺的把眉頭兒肐揪著發起怔來。Hearing this, Baochai unconsciously knit her brows tightly and fell into a daze.尤氏道：“偏你一說又是佛門了。Mrs. You said, "Of all things, once you start talking, it's the Buddhist gate again.你出家的念頭還沒有歇么？”惜春笑道：“不瞞嫂子說，我早已斷了葷了。”王夫人道：“好孩子，阿彌陀佛，這個念頭是起不得的。”惜春聽了，也不言語。Haven't you given up that idea of leaving home to become a nun yet?" Xichun said with a smile, "To be honest with you, sister-in-law, I gave up eating meat long ago." Lady Wang said, "Good child, Amitabha, that is a thought you must not entertain." Hearing this, Xichun said nothing more.寶玉想“青燈古佛前”的詩句，不禁連歎幾聲。Baoyu thought of the line of verse "before the green lamp and the ancient Buddha," and could not help sighing several times in a row.忽又想起一床席一枝花的詩句來，拿眼睛看著襲人，不覺又流下淚來。Then he suddenly recalled the verse about "one mat, one spray of flowers," and turned his eyes to look at Xiren, and without realizing it shed tears again.眾人都見他忽笑忽悲，也不解是何意，只道是他的舊病。Everyone saw him now laughing, now sorrowful, and could not fathom what he meant, taking it merely for his old illness.豈知寶玉触處机來，竟能把偷看冊上詩句俱牢牢記住了，只是不說出來，心中早有一個成見在那里了。Little did they know that Baoyu's thoughts were now stirred by whatever he touched upon, and he had in fact managed to remember firmly every verse he had once secretly glimpsed in the register; he simply did not speak of it, for a fixed understanding had already settled in his heart.暫且不題。For now, let this matter rest and be spoken of no further.

且說眾人見寶玉死去复生，神氣清爽，又加連日服藥，一天好似一天，漸漸的复原起來。Now to tell of how everyone, seeing that Baoyu had died and come back to life, found his spirit clear and refreshed, and with days of medicine besides, he grew better day by day, gradually recovering.便是賈政見寶玉已好，現在丁憂無事，想起賈赦不知幾時遇赦，老太太的靈柩久停寺內，終不放心，欲要扶柩回南安葬，便叫了賈璉來商議。As for Jia Zheng, seeing that Baoyu had recovered, and being now on mourning leave with nothing pressing to attend to, he thought of how it was uncertain when Jia She would be pardoned, and that the Old Ancestress's coffin had long stood at the temple, which he could never set his mind at ease about; wishing to escort the coffin south for burial, he summoned Jia Lian to discuss it.賈璉便道：“老爺想得极是，如今趁著丁憂干了一件大事更好。Jia Lian said, "Your reasoning is entirely correct, sir. It would be all the better to accomplish this great matter now while you are on mourning leave.將來老爺起了服，生恐又不能遂意了。Once you resume your post in the future, sir, I fear you may no longer be able to have your way in this.但是我父親不在家，侄兒呢又不敢僭越。But my father is not at home, and I, your nephew, dare not overstep my place.老爺的主意很好，只是這件事也得好幾千銀子。Your plan is excellent, sir, only this matter will require several thousand taels of silver.衙門里緝贓那是再緝不出來的。”賈政道：“我的主意是定了，只為大爺不在家，叫你來商議商議怎麼個辦法。As for the yamen recovering the stolen goods, that is something that will never be recovered." Jia Zheng said, "My mind is made up. It is only because your father is not at home that I called you here to discuss how it might best be managed.你是不能出門的。You yourself cannot leave the house.現在這里沒有人，我為是好幾口材都要帶回去的，一個怎麼樣的照應呢，想起把蓉哥兒帶了去。There is no one else here at present; since there are several coffins that must all be brought back together, I wondered how proper care could be arranged for them all — it occurred to me to take Rong-ge along.況且有他媳婦的棺材也在里頭。Besides, his wife's coffin is among them too.還有你林妹妹的，那是老太太的遺言說跟著老太太一塊兒回去的。And there is also your cousin Lin's, which, by the Old Ancestress's last wishes, was to travel back together with the Old Ancestress's own coffin.我想這一項銀子只好在那里挪借幾千，也就夠了。”賈璉道：“如今的人情過于淡薄。I think for this sum we shall simply have to borrow a few thousand from somewhere, and that should be enough." Jia Lian said, "People's feelings these days have grown far too thin.老爺呢，又丁憂，我們老爺呢，又在外頭，一時借是借不出來的了。You, sir, are on mourning leave, and my own father is away from home, so for the moment there is no way to borrow anything.只好拿房地文書出去押去。”賈政道：“住的房子是官蓋的，那里動得。”賈璉道：“住房是不能動的。We shall just have to take the deeds to the houses and land out and pawn them." Jia Zheng said, "The house we live in was built by the government — how could that be touched?" Jia Lian said, "The residence cannot be touched, of course.外頭還有幾所可以出脫的，等老爺起复後再贖也使得。There are still several other properties that could be disposed of; once you resume your post, sir, we can redeem them again — that would work too.將來我父親回來了，倘能也再起用，也好贖的。And when my father returns in the future, if he too should be reinstated, they could be redeemed then as well.只是老爺這麼大年紀，辛苦這一場，侄兒們心里實不安。”賈政道：“老太太的事，是應該的。It's just that, sir, at your age, to undergo such hardship — we nephews truly feel uneasy about it." Jia Zheng said, "This matter concerns the Old Ancestress; it is only right and proper.只要你在家謹慎些，把持定了才好。”賈璉道：“老爺這倒只管放心，侄兒雖糊涂，斷不敢不認真辦理的。Just be careful while at home, and hold things firmly together — that will do." Jia Lian said, "On this you may certainly set your mind at ease, sir. Foolish as I am, I would never dare handle matters carelessly.況且老爺回南少不得多帶些人去，所留下的人也有限了，這點子費用還可以過的來。Besides, when you travel south, sir, you will surely take a good many people with you, so those left behind will be few, and this bit of expense should still be manageable.就是老爺路上短少些，必經過賴尚榮的地方，可也叫他出點力兒。”賈政道：“自己的老人家的事，叫人家幫什麼。”賈璉答應了“是”，便退出來打算銀錢。Even if you should run short on the road, sir, since you must pass through the place where Lai Shangrong is posted, you might well have him lend a hand too." Jia Zheng said, "This is a matter concerning our own elder — why should we ask others for help?" Jia Lian answered "Yes," and withdrew to work out the money matters.

賈政便告訴了王夫人，叫他管了家，自己便擇了發引長行的日子，就要起身。Jia Zheng then told Lady Wang to take charge of the household, while he himself chose a day for the funeral procession to set out on its long journey, and was about to depart.寶玉此時身体复元，賈環賈蘭倒認真念書，賈政都交付給賈璉，叫他管教，“今年是大比的年頭。By this time Baoyu's health had recovered, and Jia Huan and Jia Lan were studying earnestly; Jia Zheng entrusted them both to Jia Lian, telling him to oversee their instruction, saying, "This year is the year of the Great Examination.環兒是有服的，不能入場，蘭兒是孫子，服滿了也可以考的，務必叫寶玉同著侄兒考去。Huan'er is still in mourning and cannot enter the examination hall; Lan'er, being a grandson, will have finished his mourning and may sit for it too — be sure to have Baoyu go together with his nephew to take the examination.能夠中一個舉人，也好贖一贖咱們的罪名。”賈璉等唯唯應命。If he manages to pass as a provincial graduate, it would also help redeem something of our family's disgrace." Jia Lian and the others assented respectfully and accepted the charge.賈政又吩咐了在家的人，說了好些話，才別了宗祠，便在城外念了幾天經，就發引下船，帶了林之孝等而去。Jia Zheng then gave further instructions to those remaining at home, saying a great many things, and only then took leave of the ancestral hall; he had sutras chanted outside the city for several days, then set the funeral procession moving and boarded the boat, taking Lin Zhixiao and others along with him.也沒有驚動親友，惟有自家男女送了一程回來。He did not trouble any relatives or friends; only the men and women of the family itself saw him off part of the way before returning.

贾政便告诉了王夫人，叫他管了家，自己便择了发引长行的日子，就要起身。宝玉此时身体复元，贾环贾兰倒认真念书，贾政都交付给贾琏，叫他管教，“今年是大比的年头。环儿是有服的，不能入场，兰儿是孙子，服满了也可以考的，务必叫宝玉同著侄儿考去。能够中一个举人，也好赎一赎咱们的罪名。”贾琏等唯唯应命。贾政又吩咐了在家的人，说了好些话，才别了宗祠，便在城外念了几天经，就发引下船，带了林之孝等而去。也没有惊动亲友，惟有自家男女送了一程回来。

寶玉因賈政命他赴考，王夫人便不時催逼查考起他的工課來。Because Jia Zheng had ordered Baoyu to sit for the examination, Lady Wang from time to time pressed and checked on his studies.那寶釵襲人時常勸勉，自不必說。As for Baochai and Xiren often encouraging and urging him on, that goes without saying.那知寶玉病後雖精神日長，他的念頭一發更奇僻了，竟換了一种。Little did they know that although Baoyu's spirits grew stronger day by day after his illness, his thinking had grown all the more strange and eccentric, having changed into something else altogether.不但厭棄功名仕進，竟把那兒女情緣也看淡了好些。Not only did he grow weary of official rank and worldly advancement, he had even come to view romantic ties between men and women with much greater indifference.只是眾人不大理會，寶玉也并不說出來。It was just that no one paid this much attention, and Baoyu himself never spoke of it.一日，恰遇紫鵑送了林黛玉的靈柩回來，悶坐自己屋里啼哭，想道：“寶玉無情，見他林妹妹的靈柩回去并不傷心落淚，見我這樣痛哭也不來勸慰，反瞅著我笑。One day, it happened that Zijuan, having seen Lin Daiyu's coffin off and returned, sat gloomily in her own room weeping, and thought to herself, "Baoyu is heartless — seeing his cousin Lin's coffin depart, he shed not a single sad tear, and seeing me weeping so bitterly he did not even come to console me, but instead just looked at me and smiled.這樣負心的人，從前都是花言巧語來哄著我們！A person so heartless as this — in the past it was all sweet talk and clever words to deceive us!前夜虧我想得開，不然幾乎又上了他的當。Fortunately I managed to see through it the other night, or else I would nearly have been taken in by him again.只是一件叫人不解，如今我看他待襲人等也是冷冷兒的。There's just one thing I cannot understand — now I see that he is cold toward Xiren and the others as well.二奶奶是本來不喜歡親熱的，麝月那些人就不抱怨他么？The Second Mistress has never much cared for closeness to begin with, but don't people like Sheyue resent him for it?我想女孩子們多半是痴心的，白操了那些時的心，看將來怎樣結局！”正想著，只見五兒走來瞧他，見紫鵑滿面淚痕，便說：“姐姐又想林姑娘了？I think most girls are foolishly devoted at heart, wasting all that worry for nothing all this while — just wait and see how things turn out in the end!" Just as she was thinking this, Wu'er happened to come in to see her, and seeing Zijuan's face streaked with tears, said, "Sister, are you thinking of Miss Lin again?想一個人聞名不如眼見，頭里聽著寶二爺女孩子跟前是最好的，我母親再三的把我弄進來。I think hearing of a person is not as good as seeing for oneself. Before, I heard that Master Bao was the very best toward girls, and so my mother insisted again and again on getting me placed in here.豈知我進來了，盡心竭力的伏侍了幾次病，如今病好了，連一句好話也沒有剩出來，如今索性連眼兒也都不瞧了。”紫鵑聽他說的好笑，便噗嗤的一笑，啐道：“呸，你這小蹄子，你心里要寶玉怎麼個樣兒待你才好？Little did I know that after I came in and served him with all my heart and strength through several bouts of illness, now that he's recovered there isn't even one kind word left over for me — now he doesn't even so much as glance at me." Hearing her say this, Zijuan found it so amusing that she burst out laughing, and spat out, "Bah, you little wretch, just how exactly do you want Baoyu to treat you before you'd be satisfied?女孩兒家也不害臊，連名公正氣的屋里人瞧著他還沒事人一大堆呢，有功夫理你去！”因又笑著拿個指頭往臉上抹著問道：“你到底算寶玉的什麼人哪？”那五兒聽了，自知失言，便飛紅了臉。A girl, and not even ashamed of herself — even his own proper, rightfully wedded women in the room look on as if nothing were the matter, a whole crowd of them, so where would he find the time to bother with you!" So saying, she laughingly drew a finger across her own face and asked, "Just what exactly are you supposed to be to Baoyu, anyway?" Hearing this, Wu'er realized she had misspoken, and her face flushed crimson.待要解說不是要寶玉怎麼看待，說他近來不怜下的話，只聽院門外亂嚷說：“外頭和尚又來了，要那一萬銀子呢。Just as she was about to explain that she had not meant it as wanting Baoyu to treat her in any particular way, and was about to speak of how he had shown no pity of late toward those beneath him, they suddenly heard a commotion of shouting outside the courtyard gate: "That monk from outside has come again, demanding that ten thousand taels of silver!太太著急，叫璉二爺和他講去，偏偏璉二爺又不在家。The Mistress is in a panic, and told Second Master Lian to go and speak with him, but as luck would have it Second Master Lian is not at home.那和尚在外頭說些瘋話，太太叫請二奶奶過去商量。”不知怎樣打發那和尚，下回分解。That monk is outside saying all sorts of mad things, and the Mistress asks that the Second Mistress be invited over to discuss it." Just how that monk was to be dealt with will be told in the next chapter.
